A red fruit bat (Pteropus scapulatus Peters, 1862) was picked up freshly dead after hitting power lines in a storm in Hamilton East, North Island, between 1927 and 1929 and kept, stuffed, on a Waikato farm. Unusually large southerly migrations of the red fruit bat into New South Wales and Victoria occurred for a few years after the severe drought in Queensland in 1926–27. This specimen may have been on migration, and blown across the Tasman by a storm. This is the first confirmed record of an Australian bat reaching New Zealand alive in European times. 相似文献

Percent parasitism of Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera:Pentatomidae) by Trichopoda pennipes F.(Diptera: Tachinidae) ten years after itsfortuitous introduction was evaluated in someareas of Italy. The parasitoid is acclimatisedin central Italy with a parasitism in 1998 of21.3% in the west coast area (Lazio) and of24.8% in the inland area (Umbria). Host adultsof both sexes were attacked with the same ratein 1998, whereas this was higher in males thanfemales in 1991 and 1992. Parasitism of nymphswas lower in all three years. In 1998parasitized bugs showed 1 (54.1%) to a maximumof 15 (0.4%) macrotype eggs per individual,distributed preferentially on the thorax ascompared with other body parts. None of theother pentatomid species collected in the sameareas were parasitized by T. pennipes,indicating that there have not been indirecteffects of this fortuitous introduction tillnow. 相似文献

To date, arabinose-binding lectins have been reported only from the human opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the plant aggressive pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum, and the sponge Pellina semitubulosa. An arabinose-binding lectin with mitogenic activity toward splenocytes and a high specific hemagglutinating activity was isolated in the present study from a wild discomycete mushroom, Peziza sylvestris. The maximal mitogenic activity was induced by a lectin concentration of 8 microM. The lectin was a single-chained protein with a molecular mass of 20 kDa. Its N-terminal sequence showed only slight resemblance to other mushroom lectins. It was adsorbed on both diethylaminoethyl-cellulose and carboxymethyl-cellulose. Unlike previously reported mushroom lectins, the hemagglutinating activity of the lectin was inhibited by arabinose, but not by a large variety of other carbohydrates. The lectin activity was adversely affected in the presence of 0.05 M NaOH or 0.025 M HCl, and when the ambient temperature was elevated above 35 degrees C. 相似文献

This is the first report of an epicaridean isopod infecting cephalopods. Three cryptoniscus larvae (Isopoda, Epicaridea) were recognized externally and found entirely embedded in the oral bulb at the beginning of the esophagus of two female Patagonian squid (Loligo gahi) sampled in North Peruvian and South Chilean waters, respectively. There was an extremely low prevalence (< 2%) and mean intensity (one) of infection which we believe indicated an accidental infection. However, the tissue location indicated successful penetration and colonization of the squid host. 相似文献

On reefs around Australia, coral mass spawning typically occurs during the austral spring (October/November) on the east coast,
and during autumn (March/April) on the west coast. However, to investigate the incidence of a secondary spawning event in
spring on the west coast, the reproductive state of corals was assessed on two reefs. The results indicated that of the 29
species of Acropora investigated, multiple colonies of 11 species spawned in late spring or in early summer, in contrast to previous reports
of spawning during autumn. Additionally, of four species that were followed through time at one reef, two spawned in both
spring and autumn, however, individual colonies had only one gametogenic cycle. Within a single site, conspecific colonies
were reproductively isolated and may not interbreed, potentially representing the initial stage of sympatric speciation in

A species of the fungus Neozygites (Zygomycetes: Entomophthorales) is recorded from the Antarctic mite Alaskozetes antarcticus (Acarina: Oribatidales) collected off the west coast of the Antarctic peninsula. The features of the fungus were similar to those recorded for Neozygites acaridis, and to other species of the genus recorded from mites in tropical and cool-temperate regions. An efficient and versatile preparative approach is described, allowing for the preparation of DNA probes modified with an aldehyde group at the 3'- or 5'-end. The developed synthetic strategy allows for the preparation of a new family of phosphoramidites and solid supports compatible with the automated synthesis of modified oligonucleotide probes. These new reagents were prepared from intermediates 3 and 3a, obtained from the commercially available aleuritic acid 1. It was demonstrated that the new phosphoramidite reagents also could be used as new types of cleavable linkers. The New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), became established in the Old World for the first time during 1988, in the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. An obligate parasite of mammals in its larval stages, causing wound myiasis, it is one of the most serious insect pests of livestock in the Americas. To avert a major disaster for the livestock industry and wildlife of Africa and southern Europe, the Libyan Government and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations launched a massive screwworm eradication programme, based on the sterile insect technique, SIT. An initial containment operation involved veterinary teams working in the infested area (25,000 km2 around Tripoli), regularly inspecting livestock and, if necessary, treating them with insecticide. Quarantine stations were also set up, to prevent the movement of infested livestock out of the area. Sterile flies from the Mexican-American Commission for Eradication of Screwworms were first released in December 1990 at the rate of 3.5 million per week. This built up to 40 million per week by May 1991. The release of sterile flies was terminated on 17 October 1991, 6 months after the last detected case of screwworm myiasis in Libya. Intensive surveillance and quarantine activities will, however, continue through 1992. During 1992 the Libyan Government should be able to officially declare the New World screwworm eradicated from Libya, making it one of the most important success stories of pest control. 相似文献
