Amapacanthus amazonicus n. g., n. sp. is described from the intestine of Arius passany (Valenciennes) and Anableps microleps Müller. The most important diagnostic features are: a small globular proboscis armed with 6 diagonal rows of 3 stout hooks; middle hooks conspicuously stouter and larger than anterior ones; terminal hooks as long as middle hooks but straighter and more slender; a double-walled proboscis receptacle; a trunk bearing spines anteriorly; and two tubular cement glands in the males. Amapacanthus n. g. is differentiated from Allorhadinorhynchus, Golvanorhynchus and Slendrorhynchus, the other genera of the Allorhadinorhynchinae, by the presence of a globular proboscis armed with a small number (18) of hooks. Summary In the male black molly, Poecilia latipinna, morphological and functional aspects of the gonadotropic (GTH-)cells have been studied at the ultrastructural level. The cells exclusively occupy the ventral and lateral areas of the meso-adenohypophysis. In the black molly there is evidence of the presence of only one type of gonadotropic cell. In the GTH-cells of most specimens, the rough endoplasmic reticulum is weakly developed. The secretory vesicles are characterized by cores with varying diameters; this variation was not observed in the secretory vesicles of the other types of pituitary cells, except in the TSH-cells. After applying a histochemical method for the demonstration of polysaccharides, small black deposits appear in the core of the secretory vesicles of the GTH and TSH-cells only; this indicates the glycoproteinaceous nature of the hormones produced in these cells.Male black mollies treated with methyl-testosterone have significantly smaller GTH-cells and a lesser number of secretory vesicles and mitochondria in these cells. GTH-cell activity in Poeciliinae may be thus influenced by androgens by means of a negative feed-back mechanism. The GTH-cells are innervated by both type A and type B neurosecretory fibres. The cichlid Hypsophrys nicaraguensis is a popular fish known as butterfly, and despite its widespread use as pets, little is known about its reproductive biology. In order to contribute to this knowledge, the study describes the relevant larval development characteristics, from adult and larval cultures in captivity. Every 12h, samples of larvae were collected and observed under the microscope for larval stage development, and every 24h morphometric measurements were taken. Observations showed that at 120h, some larvae had swimming activity and the pectoral fins development was visible; at 144h, the dorsal fin appear and all larvae started food intake; at 168h, the formation of anal fins begins, small rudiments of pelvic fins emerge, the separation of caudal fin from anal and dorsal fins starts, and the yolk sac is reabsorbed almost completely; at 288h, the pelvic fins starts to form; at 432h, the rays and spines of dorsal and anal fins can be distinguished, both the anal and the dorsal fins have the same number of spines and rays as in adults. After 480h larvae have the first scales, ending the larval stages and starting the transformation to fingerlings. Larvae were successfully fed with commercial diet. 相似文献

Summary Effects of Methallibure on the gonadotropic stimulation of the regressed gonads and secondary sex characters of the pars distalis-ectomized adult green frog, Rana esculenta, were studied. Regression of the gametogenetic activity and reduction of oviducts and thumb pads are the eventual consequences of the removal of pars distalis. Homoplastic pars distalis homogenates restimulate the gametogenesis and regressed secondary sex characters due to their gonadotropic hormone contents. Methallibure in this case blocks the stimulation of these organs by homoplastic pars distalis, which indicates that this compound inhibits the action of gonadotropic hormones upon their target tissues.Work supported by the Population Council (Grants M70.082 C & M71.0132 C) of New York, and National Research Council of Italy. 相似文献

East African cichlids have evolved feeding apparatus morphologies adapted to their diverse feeding behaviors. The evolution of the oral jaw morphologies is accomplished by the diversity of bone formation during development. To further understand this evolutionary process, we examined the skeletal elements of the jaw and their temporal and sequential emergence, categorized by developmental stages, using the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus as a model cichlid. We found that chondrogenesis started in Stage 17. The deposition of osteoid for the dermal bones commenced in Stage 18. The uptake of calcium dramatically shifted from the surface of larvae to the gills in Stage 20. The bone mineralization of the skeleton began in Stage 25. These data provide important information regarding the sequential events of craniofacial development in East African cichlids and lay the groundwork for studying the molecular mechanisms underlying adaptation of jaw structure to feeding behavior. 相似文献

The Jenynsia lineata species complex comprises J. lineata from Montevideo, Uruguay and Jenynsia multidentata, from coastal basins of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina up to 1200 m a.s.l. Taxonomic divisions within this group were tested using three different species delimitation methods, which found the two existing names to be synonyms and revealed a new cryptic species. Jenynsia darwini sp. nov. is distinguished from all congeners by having a unique combination of character states, including the shape of the dorsal postcleithrum (three times higher than wide v. less than two times higher than wide) and female colour pattern in the half of the caudal peduncle with rows of chromatophores segmented in unaligned spots (v. aligned spots forming lines). The new species also differs from J. lineata by having 26 nucleotide substitutions in the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (coI). Phylogenetic analysis of the genus based on morphological characters proposed by previous studies corroborates monophyly of the subgenera Plesiojenynsia and Jenynsia, with the new species being allocated to the subgenus Jenynsia as the sister group of J. lineata. 相似文献

Synopsis New information regarding the ecology ofScytalina cerdale was obtained over a four year period as a consequence of a long-term marine ecological study at the Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP), San Luis Obispo County, California. Twenty intertidal fish surveys were conducted at approximately quarterly intervals, between March 1979 and June 1983, at three separate rocky shore locations (stations). During each survey, a total of 108 square meters (36 m2 per station) was searched for fish during periods of low tide. A total of 280S. cerdale were collected, identified, measured, and released back into the same 4 m2 area, from the same intertidal station (Diablo Cove), throughout the study period. This limited intertidal occurrence most likely reflectsS. cerdale microhabitat requirements; a combination of intertidal elevation (mean = +0.3 MLLW), substratum specificity (loose gravel, 5–10mm size range, overlying a base of sand and shell fragments), and degree of wave exposure (semi-protected). Throughout the study,S. cerdale was seasonally more abundant during summer months (June through August) and less abundant during winter months (November through February). The only exception to this abundance trend followed the 1982 winter storms, which coincided with an El Niño event, whenS. cerdale abundance uncharacteristically dropped during the subsequent 1983 spring and summer surveys. Mean total lengths did not vary greatly, reflecting the absence of early juvenile fishes, and relatively high mean fish densities (3.5 fish per m2 for 20 surveys) were recorded. Qualitative comparisons betweenS. cerdale abundance and seasonal changes in water temperature indicated an inverse relationship. Gravid females, demersal egg masses, and early juvenile individuals were never observed during the four years of the study. This suggests that unlike most other intertidal fishes, particularly other blennioids,S. cerdale may not utilize the intertidal zone for reproductive and recruitment purposes; Diablo Canyon is the most southerly reported distribution for this intertidal species, and therefore, may not entirely represent the species' biology as a whole. 相似文献

Gonadal development and reproductive cycle of Lutjanus peru (Pisces: Lutjanidae) in Guerrero, Mexico

In this paper, aspects of the reproductive biology of Lutjanus peru that can be used for the fishery management are described. Samples were taken monthly in 1993 and 1994, from commercial catches in the southern coast of Guerrero, Mexico. A global sex ratio of 1:1.37 (M:F) was found, but the sex ratio was highly variable each month. The condition factor, gonadosomatic, hepatosomatic and stomach fullness indexes were analyzed. None of the morphophysiological indexes showed any clear tendency. From 377 gonads, both male and female, five developmental stages were characterized for each sex. L. peru shows asynchronous gonad development and multiple spawning. Two spawning period were observed in 1993 (March, and August-September) and three in 1994 (April-May, July-August, and November), with a maximum in August of both years. Length at first maturity for the females of L. peru was estimated at 295 mm fork length. 相似文献

In Polyptems senegalus a peculiar venous system exists. The pattern is symmetrical in embryos and in early-larval stages, but soon the asymmetrical development of the Cuvierian ducts, originating from vitelline veins, causes a predominance of the system to the right side. The two posterior cardinal veins coalesce except in the anterior region, where the right vein becomes the direct continuation of the single vein; in later stages the single posterior cardinal vein acquires a peculiar disposition, partially in the left and partially in the right kidney. The inferior jugular veins become asymmetrical as well. The anterior cardinal veins are replaced by lateral cephalic veins. A special vein in the abdomen may be considered as being a vena cava. Other peculiar items are the pulmonary veins. Other veins are more or less similar to those of other fishes. 相似文献

Synopsis A review of sexuality in the Sparidae shows that protandrous, protogynous, simultaneous and rudimentary hermaphroditism have all been reported in the family. Careful histological study shows that even in those species reputed to have separate sexes, intersexuality is found in the juvenile condition. We suggest that two reproductive styles, sex change and late gonochorism are found in the family. The bi-potentiality of the sparid gonad is considered to be a pre-adaptation for the development of sequential hermaphroditism in species in which reproductive success is size related. In these species sex change is an alternative reproductive style that enables individuals to maximise their lifetime reproductive success by functioning as one sex when small and the other sex when large. 相似文献

and Coryphaena hippurus is reported for the first time
in Adriatic waters. Two larvae of B.brama between 4.36
and 5.00 mm, and two larvae of C.hippurus between 4.75
and 4.95 mm standard length, were found in ichthyoplankton collections
taken off the River Neretva estuary (43010N,
17°250E) and station Stoncica, island Vis
(43°000N,
16°20E) (eastern middle Adriatic),
respectively. The capture of both species (B.brama) in
August 1998; C.hippurus in May 1998) is in agreement
with their proposed seasonal life cycle in the Adriatic Sea.

The burbot (Lota lota L.) is a northern freshwater fish with a circumpolar distribution. Two subspecies diverged due to isolation during glacial maxima: Lota lota lota is the Eurasian-Beringian subspecies and Lota lota maculosa the North American subspecies. We sampled burbot from the Great Slave Lake and Mackenzie River area, Canada, the only known contact zone of these two lineages. Using molecular methods (microsatellite loci and mtDNA sequence) we found that the subspecies’ distributions abut in the Mackenzie River delta, with L. l. lota in the lower delta and L. l. maculosa in all upstream rivers and lakes. Admixture between subspecies was minimal, decreased with increasing geographic distance, and was asymmetrical: mitochondrial and nuclear genetic introgression was from L. l. lota into L. l. maculosa but not the reverse. Within subspecies, there was low inter-population genetic differentiation, no isolation-by-distance, and no evidence for sex-biased dispersal. We did not identify a difference in body length between subspecies per se, though mean lengths differed among localities. Thus, genetic data demonstrate that burbot subspecies are reproductively isolated though the extent to which morphologically variability relates to local versus subspecific variation remains unclear. 相似文献

The diet of the siluriform fish Bagrus docmac (Forsk.) is described in relation to various localities in Lake Victoria, East Africa. Invertebrates which are the principal food of young fish, but generally of little significance in adults, are particularly poorly represented in fishes from Tanzanian waters and most important in those from the Kavirondo Gulf where the ontogenetic changes in diet differ from those found elsewhere in the Lake. B. docmac starts feeding piscivorously at about 10 cm standard length with the transition from a principally invertebrate to a primarily piscivorous diet occurring at 15 cm S.L. In adult B. docmac fish are found in over 95 % of individuals with food. Haplochromis is the all important food type, and Tilapia , the most valuable commercial fish in the lake, is not preyed upon at all. Bathymetric changes with respect to the invertebrate food are noted, and it is shown that piscivorous feeding occurs mainly by day and invertebrate feeding by night. Quantitative estimates of consumption of Haplochromis by B, docmac are computed from the results of a series of 24 h fishing surveys and found to exceed published data from elsewhere. The formula for the computation of a daily ration is given as Log R =2.973 Log L —3.36089 and it is calculated that the mean annual consumption of Haplochromis by B. docmac is approximately 75% of the mean standing stock of the prey fish, as compared with a commercial catch of about 5% of the mean standing stock. 相似文献

Measurements have been made of the surface area of the gills and accessory respiratory organs of Anabas in the weight range 1–120 g, and the data analysed with respect to body weight using logarithmic transformations. The slope of the regression line for total gill area (0–615) is less than that found in most fish, the number of secondary lamellae/mm decreased more rapidly with body weight than for most water-breathing species (h = -0.152). The gill area of Anabas is relatively small but when the area of the accessory organs is added, the total respiratory area is of the same order as inactive water-breathing fish. The regression coefficient for combined areas of labyrinthine organs and lining of the suprabranchial chambers (0.713) exceeds that for the gills and together with other evidence (including estimates of diffusing capacity from morphological measurements), indicates an increasing importance of air-breathing of larger specimens. The average surface area of the accessory organs available for 1 ml of air within the suprabranchial chambers was found to be 2226 mm2 . 相似文献

Two fish species, Astronotus ocellatus (Cichlidae) and Macropodus opercularis (Anabatidae) were tested for predacious behavior toward immature mosquitoes (Aedes fluviatilis, Diptera:Culicidae) and schistosomiasis snail hosts (Biomphalaria glabrata, Mollusca:Planorbidae), in the presence or absence of non-living food and in laboratory conditions. A. ocellatus, a species indigenous to Brazil, was a very efficient predator of both organisms (alpha = 0.05); M. opercularis, an exotic species, preyed well on immature mosquitoes, but small snails and snail egg-masses were ingested only irregularly. The karyotypes of salmonid fishes including taxa in the three subfamilies Coregoninae, Thymallinae and Salmoninae are described. This review is an update of the (Hartley, 1987) review of the chromosomes of salmonid fishes. As described in the previous review, the karyotypes of salmonid fishes fall into two main categories based on chromosome numbers: the type A karyotypes have diploid numbers close to 80 with approximately 100 chromosome arms (2n = 80, NF = 100), and the type B karyotypes have diploid numbers close to 60 with approximately 100 chromosome arms (2n = 60, NF = 100). In this paper we have proposed additional sub categories based on variation in the number of chromosome arms: the A' type with NF = 110-120, the A" type with NF greater than 140, and the B' type with NF less than 80. Two modes of chromosome evolution are found in the salmonids: in the Coregoninae and the Salmoninae the chromosomes have evolved by centric fusions of the Robertsonian type decreasing chromosome numbers (2n) while retaining chromosome arm numbers (NF) close to that found in the hypothetical tetraploid ancestor so that most extant taxa have either type A or type B karyotypes. In the Thymallinae, the chromosomes have evolved by inversions so that chromosome arm numbers (NF) have increased but chromosome numbers (2n) close to the karyotype of the hypothetical tetraploid ancestor have been retained and all taxa have type A' karyotypes. Most of the taxa with type B karyotypes in the Coregoninae and Salmoninae are members of the genus Oncorhynchus, although at least one example of type B karyotypes is found in all of the other genera. These taxa either have an anadromous life history or are found in specialized lacustrine environments. Selection for increases or decreases in genetic recombination as proposed by Qumsiyeh, 1994 could have been involved in the evolution of chromosome number in salmonid fishes. 相似文献
