A seahorse specimen from Banco Açores (Azores Archipelago) was identified using morphological and molecular genetic data as Hippocampus erectus . This specimen represents the first record of H. erectus in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, well outside its reported range, and may provide evidence of long-distance translocation in what are assumed to be relatively sedentary fish.  相似文献

This report details the development of a microsporidan infection in a colony of seahorses (Hippocampus erectus) caused by Glugea heraldi. Of 76 animals imported from Florida Bay (USA), two survived. A myxosporidan (Sphaeromyxa sp.) and an unidentified nematode infection were also diagnosed in the same colony, but these infections were not considered important, causative factors in the mortalities.  相似文献

Histologic evaluation of the renal system in the lined seahorse Hippocampus erectus reveals a cranial kidney with low to moderate cellularity, composed of a central dorsal aorta, endothelial lined capillary sinusoids, haematopoietic tissue, fine fibrovascular stroma, ganglia and no nephrons. In comparison, the caudal kidney is moderately to highly cellular with numerous highly convoluted epithelial lined tubules separated by interlacing haematopoietic tissue, no glomeruli, fine fibrovascular stroma, numerous capillary sinusoids, corpuscles of Stannius and clusters of endocrine cells adjacent to large calibre vessels. Ultrastructural evaluation of the renal tubules reveals minimal variability of the tubule epithelium throughout the length of the nephron and the majority of tubules are characterized by epithelial cells with few apical microvilli, elaborate basal membrane infolding, rare electron dense granules and abundant supporting collagenous matrix.  相似文献

The evolutionary history of the endangered Knysna seahorse, Hippocampus capensis, and the extent of gene flow among its three known populations, were investigated using 138 mitochondrial DNA control region sequences. Similarly high levels of genetic diversity were found in two of the populations (Knysna and Keurbooms Estuaries), whereas diversity in the third population (Swartvlei Estuary) was lower. Although most haplotypes are shared between at least two populations, based on the haplotype frequency distributions the three assemblages constitute distinct management units. The extant population structure of H. capensis suggests that the Knysna seahorse originated in the large Knysna Estuary. The presence of seahorses in the two smaller estuaries is either the result of a vicariance event at the beginning of the present interglacial period, colonization of the estuaries via the sea, or a combination of the two.  相似文献

Based on 16 months of field observations on tagged seahorses Hippocampus comes in the Philippines, adults were found to be nocturnal, to maintain small home ranges, and to live mostly among corals. Prolonged pair associations suggested that H. comes , like many other seahorse species, were probably monogamous, a conclusion consistent with their low density and sparse distribution. Site and mate fidelity suggest that H. comes populations may fare poorly under current high levels of exploitation.  相似文献

This is the first record of the Pacific seahorse Hippocampus ingens at a northern oceanic island from the eastern Pacific Ocean. The photographic record of the juvenile female H. ingens was made in November 2015 during a cage diving trip at Guadalupe Island, Mexico. The presence of H. ingens in this area could be related to long distance dispersal mechanisms, as has been observed in other species of seahorses.  相似文献

This study aimed to compare activity levels of male and female Hippocampus reidi and to relate the level of activity of the males to their height and brood pouch circumference. Females appeared to be highly active, while pregnant males were less active and non-pregnant males presented more balance in time investment between active and inactive behavior. There was a positive correlation between height, brood pouch circumference, and inactive behavior.  相似文献

South Africa's endemic Knysna seahorse, Hippocampus capensis Boulenger 1900, is a rare example of a marine fish listed as Endangered by the IUCN because of its limited range and habitat vulnerability. It is restricted to four estuaries on the southern coast of South Africa. This study reports on its biology in the Knysna and Swartvlei estuaries, both of which are experiencing heavy coastal development. We found that H. capensis was distributed heterogeneously throughout the Knysna Estuary, with a mean density of 0.0089m–2 and an estimated total population of 89000 seahorses (95% confidence interval: 30000–148000). H. capensis was found most frequently in low density vegetation stands (20% cover) and grasping Zostera capensis. Seahorse density was not otherwise correlated with habitat type or depth. The size of the area in which any particular seahorse was resighted did not differ between males and females. Adult sex ratios were skewed in most transects, with more males than females, but were even on a 10 by 10m focal study grid. Only three juveniles were sighted during the study. Both sexes were reproductively active but no greeting or courtship behaviours were observed. Males on the focal study grid were longer than females, and had shorter heads and longer tails, but were similar in colouration and skin filamentation. The level of threat to H. capensis and our limited knowledge of its biology mean that further scientific study is urgently needed to assist in developing sound management practices.  相似文献

The muscles, fin ray joints, and supporting structures underlying the dorsal fin are described for two seahorse species: Hippocampus zosterae and Hippocampus erectus. A fan-shaped array of cartilaginous bones, the pterigiophores, form the internal supporting structure of the dorsal fin. Each pterigiophore is composed of a proximal radial that extends from a vertebra to the dorsal side of the animal, where it fuses to a middle radial. The middle radials fuse with each other to form a dorsal ridge upon which sit the spheroidal distal radials. Each distal radial articulates with a fin ray on its dorsal side and is attached to the dorsal ridge on its ventral side by a material that has been histologically identified as elastic cartilage. Together these connections form a two-axis joint that permits elevation, depression, and inclination of the ray. Each fin ray is actuated by two bilateral pairs of muscles, an anterior pair of inclinators, and a posterior pair of depressors. The anteriormost fin ray is actuated by three bilateral pair of muscles, the inclinators, the depressors, and a pair of elevator muscles that are positioned anterior to the inclinators. Preliminary examinations of the ray joints of the pectoral and anal fins of adult H. zostera and the pectoral fins of newborn H. erectus revealed structures similar to that seen in the dorsal fins. To further explore the structure and function of the dorsal fin gross dissections and simple functional tests were performed on H. erectus and H. barbouri and behavioral observations were made of all three species plus Hippocampus kuda.  相似文献

Recovery from acute and chronic stress in the pot-bellied seahorse Hippocampus abdominalis under aquaculture conditions was investigated in this study to evaluate (a) whether these relatively slow and sedentary fish develop the 'fight or flight' response and (b) the impact of transportation stress on pot-bellied seahorse physiology. Fish were exposed to either a control treatment, an acute stressor (air exposure for 60 s) or a chronic stressor (confinement or transportation). Plasma concentrations of cortisol, glucose and lactate did not increase in response to an acute stressor, suggesting that adrenergic activation was absent. In contrast, chronic stress initiated increases in cortisol (77 ng ml−1) and glucose (7 mM), which both returned to pre-stress concentrations (4 ng ml−1, 4 mM respectively) within the subsequent 6 h. Recovery from chronic stress thus fitted the teleost paradigm, i.e. plasma levels of cortisol and glucose returned to pre-stress values in c . 6 h during recovery from a chronic stressor. The seemingly rapid return to homeostasis suggests that special precautions, over and above normal procedures, may not be required for long-distance transportation of pot-bellied seahorses.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to collect data on population dynamics and life history for White's seahorse Hippocampus whitei, a geographically restricted species that is listed as data deficient under the IUCN Red List. Data from H. whitei populations were collected from two regions, Port Stephens (north) and Sydney Harbour (south) in New South Wales, Australia, covering most of the known range of H. whitei, from 2005 to 2010. Over 1000 individuals were tagged using fluorescent elastomer and on subsequent recaptures were re-measured for growth data that were used in a forced Gulland-Holt plot to develop growth parameters for use in a specialized von Bertalanffy growth-function model. Growth parameters for Port Stephens were: females L(∞) = 149·2 mm and K = 2·034 per year and males L(∞) = 147·9 mm and K = 2·520 per year compared with estimates from Sydney Harbour: females L(∞) = 139·8 mm and K = 1·285 per year and males L(∞) = 141·6 mm and K = 1·223 per year. Whilst there was no significant difference in growth between sexes for each region, H. whitei in Port Stephens grew significantly quicker and larger and matured and reproduced at a younger age than those from Sydney Harbour. The life span of H. whitei is at least 5 years in the wild with six individuals recorded reaching this age. Data collected on breeding pairs found that H. whitei displays life-long monogamy with three pairs observed remaining pair bonded over three consecutive breeding years. Baseline population densities were derived for two Port Stephens' sites (0·035 and 0·110 m(-2) ) and for Manly in Sydney Harbour (1·050 m(-2) ). Even though the life-history parameters of H. whitei suggest it may be reasonably resilient, precaution should be taken in its future management as a result of its limited geographical distribution and increasing pressures from anthropogenic sources on its habitats.  相似文献

Early life history of a seahorse, Hippocampus mohnikei, in Tokyo Bay, Japan   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
The early morphological development, seasonal and spatial occurrence patterns, and food habits of a seahorse, Hippocampus mohnikei, in offshore waters of Tokyo Bay, central Japan, were studied on the basis of 206 juvenile and young specimens (6.0–65.3 mm TL) collected between August 1995 and January 1999. All the specimens were collected within the period from May to January, inclusive, each year. In the least developed specimen (6.0 mm TL), the number of dorsal, anal, and pectoral fin rays had attained the adult complement, whereas the minute caudal fin, consisting of two rays, was present in juveniles of 6.0–26.4 mm TL. Hippocampus mohnikei≧35 mm TL, being larger than settlement size (ca. 30 mm TL), had very low gut fullness index values (GFI = 0, >70% of specimens), whereas those of 15–29 mm TL had higher values (GFI = 2–4, >80% of specimens). In addition, larger individuals selectively fed on larger planktonic animals (species of Brachyura), which occurred naturally at low densities, although smaller food items, such as Oithona davisae and Penilia avirostris, occurred abundantly, being consumed by smaller H. mohnikei individuals (15–34 mm TL). These results indicated that food availability for H. mohnikei in offshore waters of Tokyo Bay is significant for individuals larger than settlement size, because their food preference would shift from smaller food items to larger food items, which would be scarce in their environments. Unlike most teleosts, the seahorse (genus Hippocampus) is able to bend its tail ventrally, uses its tail in a postural role as a grasping and holding appendage, and possesses heavy body plates instead of scales. To investigate seahorse axial bending mechanisms and the role of plating in those mechanisms, observations were made on seahorses curling their tails ventrally and holding a support and components of the mechanical system used for axial bending, including dermal plates, vertebrae, and axial muscles, were examined. Anatomical modifications involved in ventral tail bending include hypertrophy of the ventral region of the hypaxial muscle, ventrolateral attachment of the myomeres to plates, and modification of the infracarinalis posterior muscles so that they act in axial bending rather than in fin movement as has previously been hypothesized (Harder, '75) for other fishes. Modifications for prehension include the presence of fibers histochemically characterized as tonic in the median ventral muscles (the modified infracarinalis muscle) and in portions of the myomeres. Dermal plates are an important part of the force transmission system used in seahorse tail bending. They transmit forces from the hypaxial myomeres to bend the tail both laterally and ventrally. This study expands our understanding of axial bending in fishes by examining extreme modifications of the musculoskeletal system associated with the evolution of unique functional capabilities within teleosts. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

This study examined how habitat associations changed with ontogeny in the tiger tail seahorse Hippocampus comes Cantor, 1850, over four reef zones in a coral reef ecosystem. Hippocampus comes showed ontogenetic differences in their use of habitat at the scale of reef zones (macrohabitat) and holdfasts (microhabitat). Across reef zones, juvenile size classes (25–105 mm standard length, L S) were most abundant in wild macroalgal beds ( Sargassum spp.) (55·7%), while adults (>105 mm L S) occupied both coral reefs (39·7%) and macroalgal beds (42·7%). Microhabitat use also varied with ontogeny. Juveniles generally used macroalgal holdfasts, while adults >135 mm L S used a greater diversity of specialized microhabitats that included branching sponges, branching corals and tall seagrass. Ontogenetic changes in habitat association, as well as size-related shifts in crypsis and aggregation, suggest that H. comes experiences fitness trade-offs that vary with size; juveniles may associate with habitat that reduces predation, while larger individuals may use distinct microhabitat in reef zones to optimize reproductive success. Results are discussed in the context of targeted exploitation, expanding artisanal mariculture, habitat damage from illegal fishing and reserve design.  相似文献

Testes morphology, spermatogenetic process and mature sperm ultrastructure were analysed in Hippocampus guttulatus, using both light and transmission electron microscopy. Both testes were organized in a single large germinal compartment, with a central lumen. Spermatocysts only contained spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes. Inside the testis lumen, together with mature sperm, two types of large mono‐nucleate cells, flagellate and aflagellate, were present. Both types of cells were interpreted as developing germ cells precociously released inside the testis lumen, where their maturation was completed. According to the different morphological features of the nuclei, such as chromatin condensation degree, aspect of the nuclear fossa and others, the flagellate cells were unquestionably developing spermatids. On the contrary, the developmental stage of the aflagellate was more difficult to interpreted. They could be secondary spermatocytes or young spermatids. No dimorphic sperm were recognizable, the only sperm type observed have features typical of the intro‐sperm reports in other syngnathids species. They had a cylindrical head, a short midpiece, characterized by two mitochondrial rings housed inside a cytoplasmic collar, and a long flagellum. These and previous data about the same topic reported on other syngnathids species were compared and discussed.  相似文献

The life history characteristics of many species of seahorse, including the hedgehog seahorse Hippocampus spinosissimus, make them sensitive to exploitation. Consequently, proper management tools must be employed; these are often based on reliable ageing. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of using otoliths for ageing hedgehog seahorses from Vietnam. Asteriscus, lapillus and sagitta all showed moderate to strong correlations between fish standard length (SL), otolith length and number of increments in seahorses between 83 and 188 mm SL. There were no annual or seasonal marks in any of the three otolith pairs observed using dissecting or light microscopy, and only asteriscus revealed microincrements under light microscopy. The number of increments ranged between 71 and 137. A full trajectory of lapillar microincrements was only visible when using scanning electron microscopy, and then only in two of the examined individuals (88 and 115 increments). A validation experiment showed that the number of increments in the asterisci did not correspond to the age of seahorses bred and reared for 717 and 868 days. Furthermore, a second validation study using Alizarine Complexone (ALZ) otolith marking did not reveal any increments peripheral to the ALZ mark 30 days after marking. The conclusion of the study was that otoliths do not at present provide a reliable tool for estimating age in adult hedgehog seahorses, and therefore other tools have to be employed to improve their management.  相似文献
