  • 1 Rainfall and vegetation greenness are widely claimed to influence fat content and egg development in locusts. Body size, abdominal fat and egg length of spur‐throated Austracris guttulosa and Australian plague Chortoicetes terminifera locusts were related to the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI; a greenness indicator) to test these assumptions and quantify biological responses.
  • 2 Cumulative rainfall was highly correlated with NDVI values of an area (25 × 25 km) surrounding the trap to which locusts were attracted. Catches of locusts were greater in hotter periods preceding rain, associated with an increase in NDVI indicative of brown (0.298) versus green (0.465) vegetation.
  • 3 Pre‐overwintering descendent A. guttulosa were larger and fattier than post‐overwintering antecedents. Egg maturation of antecedents occurred coincident with increasing NDVI. Higher abdominal fat in pre‐overwintering locusts was positively associated with higher NDVI.
  • 4 Male C. terminifera of two descendent generations were larger than their antecedents but only pre‐overwintering locusts were significantly fattier than their predecessors. Only pre‐overwintering females were significantly larger than their predecessors and no generation was significantly fattier than any other. Fat content was negatively correlated with egg maturation and differed significantly with NDVI, although strong and consistent relationships were not obtained.
  • 5 The findings suggest that locust–environment interactions are species‐ and habitat‐specific. If A. guttulosa hoppers develop during periods when regional NDVI exceeds 0.4, fatter adults will arise. The elucidation of relationships between greenness, fat and egg development in C. terminifera is unlikely using NDVI values from areas comprising mixtures of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous vegetation.

Adult desert locusts were experimentally infected per os with 30, 50, or 60 Mermis nigrescens eggs, and changes in the host physiology were recorded. Larval nematodes were recovered from the hemocoel and counted at appropriate times after infection. The food consumption and blood volume of the host were unaffected by the parasitism, but the nematode significantly impaired the ability of male locusts to excrete the injected dye, amaranth, from their hemolymph. The total carbohydrate in the hemolymph of infected male and female locusts was severely depleted during the active growth period of the nematode and the possible utilization of these carbohydrates by the nematode are discussed. The total amino acid and protein levels in the blood of the host were unaffected by the nematode development, although concomittant changes in the levels of both these blood metabolites occurred in all locusts throughout the experimental period. However, although changes of this nature reflected the normal pattern of protein synthesis during oocyte development and oviposition in control locusts, the nematode suppressed oocyte development and caused oocyte resorption in the female host. The nematode did not significantly affect the level of total protein and amino acids in the flight muscles of male and female locusts, but a significant decrease in the level of fat body proteins and amino acids was recorded in infected hosts 16 and 21 days after infection. The possible effect of the nematode on protein metabolism by the host fat body is discussed in relation to the nutritional requirements of the nematode and involvement of the host endocrine system.

The majority of true parasitoids manipulate their host’s physiology for their own benefit. In this study, we documented the physiological changes that occurred in major soldiers of the subterranean termite Macrotermes gilvus (Hagen) (Isoptera: Termitidae) parasitized by the koinobiont larval endoparasitoid Misotermes mindeni Disney and Neoh (Diptera: Phoridae). We compared the metabolic rate, body water content, body water loss rate, cuticular permeability, and desiccation tolerance between parasitized and unparasitized major soldiers. The metabolic rate of parasitized hosts was significantly higher than that of unparasitized termites. Mean total body water content of parasitized major soldiers (64.73 ± 3.26%) was significantly lower than that of unparasitized termites (71.99 ± 2.23%). Parasitized hosts also had significantly lower total body water loss rates (5.72 ± 0.06%/h) and higher cuticular permeability (49.37 ± 11.26 μg/cm/h/mmHg) than unparasitized major soldiers (6.75 ± 0.16%/h and 60.76 ± 24.98 μg/cm/h/mmHg, respectively). Parasitized major soldiers survived almost twice as long as unparasitized termites (LT50 = 6.66 h and LT50 = 3.40 h, respectively) and they had significantly higher tolerance to water loss compared to unparasitized termites (45.28 ± 6.79% and 32.84 ± 7.69%, respectively). Body lipid content in parasitized hosts (19.84 ± 6.27%) was significantly higher than that of unparasitized termites (6.17 ± 7.87%). Finally, parasitized hosts had a significantly lower percentage of cuticular water content than unparasitized major soldiers (10.97 ± 1.84% and 13.17 ± 2.21%, respectively). Based on these data, we conclude that the parasitism-induced physiological changes in the host are beneficial to the parasitoids as the alterations can clearly increase the parasite’s chances of survival when exposed to extreme environmental conditions and ensure that the parasitoids are able to complete their larval development successfully before the host dies.

Objective: Collared lemmings, Dicrostonyx groenlandicus, show rapid changes in body mass on a seasonal basis. The objective of this study was to measure longitudinal changes in body composition in animals undergoing photoperiod-induced weight gain and loss using DXA. Research Methods and Procedures: Adult, female collared lemmings exposed to either long (LD; 22 hours light/2 hours dark) or short (SD; 8 hours light/16 hours dark) photoperiods were anesthetized, and DXA was used to determine fat mass, lean tissue mass (LTM), total-body bone mineral content, and total-bone mineral density. After a baseline scan, one-half of the animals were transferred to the alternate photoperiod (SD-LD, weight loss; LD-SD, weight gain) and one-half remained on the same photoperiod (controls; SD-SD, LD-LD). Body composition was determined by DXA after 4 and 8 weeks. Animals were killed, and body composition was determined by carcass analysis. DXA-derived data were validated by comparing with carcass analysis. Results: Body composition by DXA was highly related to body composition measured by chemical analysis, thereby justifying the use of DXA. Lemmings in the SD-LD group lost weight, and this was reflected in measurable losses of fat and LTM. Lemmings in the LD-SD group gained weight, which was shown by measurable increases in fat, LTM and total-body bone mineral content. Discussion: Comparison of body composition determined by DXA to that by chemical extraction revealed that DXA is useful for measuring body composition. The longitudinal analysis revealed that collared lemmings undergo rapid changes in body composition when exposed to changes in photoperiod.

Summary Two laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the ovipositional preferences of the egg parasitoidOoencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) for parasitized and unparasitizedMegacopta punctatissimum Montandon (Hemiptera: Plataspidae). Females that had never oviposited or that had not oviposite for 3 days preferred recently parasitized hosts more than unparasitized hosts. The preference for recently parasitized hosts appeared to be mediated by the punctures in already parasitized hosts made by the ovipositor of the first female. Survival of the parasitoid progeny was lower in recently parasitized hosts than in unparasitized hosts. However, handling time of parasitized hosts was extremely short relative to that of unparasitized hosts, because the superparasitizing female could use the punctures made by the previous females. It is concluded that the females preferred the parasitized hosts over unparasitized hosts because the benefit of saving time and energy for drilling was more than the cost of progeny survival.

Two states of parasitization in the Pseudaletia separata-Cotesia kariyai system were examined: one that was lightly parasitized and one that was heavily parasitized. We predicted that the consumption of fat body and hemolymph nutrients depends on the number of parasitoid larvae in the host. Lightly parasitized hosts (average clutch size+/-S.E.: 42.5+/-16.2, N=15) and heavily parasitized hosts (average clutch size+/-S.E.: 230.2+/-8.8, N=15) were prepared artificially. Eight days after parasitization, perivisceral fat body was depleted in the heavily parasitized host, although peripheral fat body was not yet consumed, but by day 10 most of the peripheral fat body was consumed. In lightly parasitized hosts, perivisceral fat body was not consumed by day 10. The parasitoid larvae deplete the perivisceral fat body first and then consume the peripheral fat body in the heavily parasitized host. The amount of trehalose, the major carbohydrate in the hemolymph, was related to the number of parasitoid larvae developing in the host. In a heavily parasitized host, trehalose concentrations remained low. However, in lightly parasitized hosts, the amount of trehalose increased 8 days after parasitization and then decreased by day 10. Protein and total lipid concentrations in the hemolymph of the heavily parasitized host were significantly lower than in lightly parasitized host on day 10, suggesting that the large number of parasitoid larvae depleted the fat body and hemolymph nutrients by day 10. High concentrations of total lipid on day 8 and 10 in lightly parasitized hosts and on day 8 in heavily parasitized host are likely to be attributed to the teratocytes.

Western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is the most important insect pest for greenhouse flower crops, but chemical control is often difficult because of the thrips' location in flowers and buds. Thripinema nicklewoodi (Tylenchida: Allantonematidae) is an entomoparasitic nematode that attacks and sterilizes WFT, but its biology and impact on WFT are poorly understood. Methods to propagate and study T. nicklewoodi with a microscope slide arena for observation and a rolled bean leaf arena for rearing were developed. On average, 21.4 nematodes were excreted per day by a parasitized female WFT. The sex ratio of the excreted nematodes was 6.0/1.0 (female/male). After dissection of adult WFT, a maximum of 11 ovoid-shaped first-generation nematodes in a female thrips and 6 in a male thrips were found. There were more second-generation nematodes in the adult female WFT (192.6) than in the adult male WFT (93.7). When 50 healthy first instar WFT were exposed to 4 parasitized female WFT in a rolled bean leaf, a 75.3% mean parasitization rate in the adult stage of the thrips was obtained. In contrast to previous reports, male WFT can be parasitized as readily as females. Parasitism reduced the longevity of both adult female and adult male WFT, and the degree of reduction was higher in adult male WFT. T. nicklewoodi, when presented with various WFT life stages (first instar, second instar, prepupa, pupa, adult female, and adult male), achieved the highest attack rate in first and second instars and prepupa. The free-living nematodes excreted by the hosts actively migrated to a trichome on leaf disks in the observation arena and moved up this structure. Then, the nematode actively waved the anterior part of its body while attaching itself to the trichome with the posterior part of its body. After a nematode contacted the leg of a thrips, the nematode immediately moved up along the leg toward the abdomen of the host. Increased understanding of the biology of T. nicklewoodi is important to better assess its potential for biological control of WFT.

CLEARY, MARGOT P., AND FREDERICK C. PHILLIPS. The presence of the “fa” gene in heterozygous (FA/fa) lean female rats: effects on body weight, body fat and serum leptin. Obes Res. Objective: In previous studies, suckling lean heterozygous (FA/fa) pups had higher body fat levels in comparison to lean homozygous (FA/FA) pups. However, in older male rats fed either low- or high-fat diets, we found no effects of the “fa” gene in heterozygous lean rats compared to homozygous lean rats. Other studies have reported effects of the “fa” gene on aspects of insulin metabolism for lean heterozygous female rats compared to their homozygous counterparts. In the present study, the effect of the “fa” gene on body weight and body fat in lean female rats was investigated. Research Methods and Procedures: Homozygous lean female rats were obtained by mating homozygous lean male and female rats. Heterozygous lean female rats were obtained by mating homozygous obese male rats with heterozygous lean female rats. Following weaning, rats were maintained on a standard laboratory diet until 10 weeks of age when they were killed after an overnight fast. Results: Body weight (p<0. 03) and inguinal (p = 0. 01) and combined retroperitoneal+parametrial (p = 0. 06) fat pad weights were heavier in heterozygous lean compared to homozygous lean female rats. Combined fat pad-to-body weight ratio (p = 0. 05) and fat cell sizes (p = 0. 06) were also higher in the heterozygous lean compared to homozygous lean rats. No differences in serum triacylglycerol, cholesterol, glucose, or insulin concentrations were found between the two groups, but serum leptin levels were significantly higher (p<0. 004) in heterozygous lean rats. Discussion: These results indicate that effects of the “fa” gene are present during the postweaning period in lean female rats. Implications for increased body fat and leptin with respect to sexual maturation and fertility are discussed.

Summary

Implantation of female fat body and ovary discs into the young male pupae brought about vitellin accumulation in the mature eggs developed in male hosts. The amounts of vitellin increased according to the increasing amounts of implanted fat body, and the vitellin synthesis activity of female fat body in male hosts was similar to that found in female hosts. When implanted into male pupae, larval fat body having no ability to produce vitellogenin in situ could bring about vitellin accumulation in the eggs. No accumulation of vitellin was induced by implantation of male fat body.

Abstract: The solitary endoparasitoid Anagyrus kamali Moursi (Hym., Encyrtidae) and the Hibiscus mealybug Maconellicoccus hirsutus Green (Hom., Pseudococcidae), were used as a parasite/host model to test the effect of mating on several fitness parameters, i.e. longevity, lifetime fecundity, progeny emergence and sex ratio. At 27 ± 2°C, 8 h light : 16 h dark, mating significantly affected the survival of male parasitoids. Virgin males lived longer (32.2 ± 9.51 days) than mated males (23.9 ± 7.52 days). Female longevity (40.7 ± 16.3 days for virgins and 36.2 ± 10.7 days for mated females) was not affected by mating. The lifetime fecundity of female parasitoids and their oviposition period was not significantly affected by mating. However, the number of hosts parasitized was greater for mated wasps (7.54 ± 4.85 hosts parasitized/day) compared with virgin ones (5.12 ± 2.19 hosts parasitized/day). This resulted in greater progeny production from mated A. kamali females. The progeny of virgin females consisted only of males, whereas the mated ones had a more female‐biased sex ratio. The lowest sex ratio (0.41 M/F ± 0.123) was attained when females had free access to males and were multi‐mated.

Objective: Partitioning of body energy content in the aleptinemic ob/ob mouse differs from that in wild‐type mice, but it is not known whether parallel differences exist between humans with leptin (Lep) gene mutations and healthy adults. The objective of this study was to evaluate body composition in three leptin‐treated Turkish adults homozygous for a missense mutation (C→T substitution at codon 105 resulting in Arg→Trp) of Lep. Research Methods and Procedures: Subjects, one male and two female Turkish family members, were evaluated at baseline and treated for 18 months with r‐MetHuLeptin. Patient data (fat mass, energy content) were compared with adult sex‐specific predicted values (adjusted for weight, height, and age) derived in healthy control subjects. Results: Weight loss with leptin treatment was substantial, ranging from 43.9% to 52.1%. At baseline and with leptin treatment, the two women had a fat mass and energy content similar (±12%) to predicted values. Baseline fat and energy content in the male patient was high compared with predicted values (e.g., fat +33%) but approached and reached normal values (e.g., fat, +2%) after 18 months of leptin therapy. Discussion: Adult women with Lep mutations had body composition similar to normal women at baseline and with leptin treatment. In contrast, the man with a Lep mutation had high body fat in the untreated state but a normal male phenotype with leptin administration, possibly secondary to androgenic fat partitioning effects. Fat and energy partitioning can, thus, be quantitatively assessed and linked with potential hormonal mechanisms in humans with inherited disturbances in energy regulation.

The detection of, and response to, parasitized hosts by female parasitoids can involve a number of complex phenomena, including the ability of females to discriminate between unparasitized and parasitized hosts, the physiological state of females, and the nature and longevity of the cues they are detecting. The discriminatory ability of Opius dimidiatus,a solitary endoparasitoid of Liriomyza trifoliiwas examined. Experiments showed, first, that when presented with a choice of unparasitized hosts and hosts which they had previously parasitized, O. dimidiatusfemales could discriminate between them, both upon encounter (before probing) and after probing with the ovipositor. It was further demonstrated that the detection of parasitized hosts was time dependent: females could discriminate on the basis of antennal examination for up to 2.5 h after the first egg was laid. Postprobing discrimination lasted for up to 3.5 h. Some of the causal and evolutionary factors resulting in superparasitism are discussed.

Although parasitoids ultimately kill their host, koinobiont parasitoids must protect not only themselves but also their hosts against extreme environments. In this study, the parasitism rate of Chilo suppressalis Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was investigated, and the average body weights, supercooling points, and concentrations of glycerol (acting as a cryoprotectant) in the hemolymph were compared between parasitized and non‐parasitized larvae. Five species of koinobiont endoparasitoids parasitized the overwintering C. suppressalis larvae and the total parasitism rate was 47.6% (n = 1 537). Average body weight of parasitized larvae was significantly lower than that of non‐parasitized larvae, and the parasitism rate of the lighter group (20–30 mg) was highest. The supercooling point of parasitized C. suppressalis larvae (?15.7 ± 0.3 °C) was significantly lower than that of the non‐parasitized larvae (?14.3 ± 0.2 °C). In addition, supercooling points were not correlated with body weights between parasitized and non‐parasitized larvae, indicating that cold hardiness of parasitized larvae was enhanced by endoparasitoids. Furthermore, the concentration of glycerol in the hemolymph was significantly higher in parasitized larvae (205.0 ± 7.1 μmol ml?1) than in non‐parasitized larvae (169.8 ± 14.4 μmol ml?1), which suggests that the mechanism that decreases the supercooling point of parasitized larvae was associated with glycerol. All these results indicated that the cold hardiness of parasitized C. suppressalis larvae was enhanced by their endoparasitoids, which benefitted overwintering endoparasitoids.

Allatectomy of 1-day-old female desert locusts resulted in an accumulation of lipid in the fat body. This accumulation of lipid was due to the continuation of lipid deposition in the fat body after the period of somatic growth. Somatic growth and feeding activity were unaffected by allatectomy, and so could not be indirect causes of fat body lipid accumulation. Lipid accumulation in allatectomized locusts is more likely to be related directly to a lack of juvenile hormone. Implantation of active corpora allata into 1-day-old adult female locusts resulted in a premature development of oöcytes and a decrease in fat body lipid accumulation; somatic growth was not inhibited. Implantation of active corpora allata into old allatectomized locusts resulted in a decrease in the fat body lipid content and the onset of oöcyte development. The lipid synthetic activity of the fat body, measured by the incorporation of 14C-actate into total fat body lipid, was greatly increased in allatectomized locusts after the period of somatic growth. The protein synthetic activity of the fat body, measured by the incorporation of 3H-leucine into total fat body protein, remained low after the period of somatic growth in allatectomized insects. Juvenile hormone might thus have a dual effect on fat body metabolism, that is suppressing lipid synthesis and stimulating vitellogenic protein synthesis. Increased synthesis of lipid by the fat body would then account for the accumulation of lipid in the fat body after allatectomy. Inhibition of release of lipid from the fat body is unlikely to play a part in the accumulation as allatectomy had no effect on haemolymph lipid concentrations.

Hyperlipaemic response to adipokinetic hormone (AKH I) was demonstrated in both solitary and gregarious phases of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria gregaria. Time-course studies showed that the gregarious locusts had a faster response to the hormone than their solitary counterparts. At peak response time (90 min), the gregarious locusts were more sensitive to AKH I doses below 2 pmol while the solitary locusts had a higher response above this dose. Upon injection of the hormone, lipoprotein conversion occurred, resulting in the formation of the low density lipoprotein (LDLp). The LDLp formed in the gregarious locusts was much larger than that of the solitary locusts. The fat body lipid reserve (expressed as % fat body dry weight) was significantly (P < 0.01) higher in the gregarious (79.02 ± 2.77%) than in the solitary locusts (65.23 ± 2.55%). Triacylglycerol was the major lipid class representing 83.9 and 73.9% of the total lipids in gregarious and solitary locusts, respectively. The higher fat body lipid reserves and efficient LDLp formation in response to AKH in gregarious locusts compared to solitary locusts suggests a physiological adaptation for prolonged flights.

Anaphes victus Huber andAnaphes listronoti Huber (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) are respectively solitary and gregarious egg parasitoids of the carrot weevil,Listronotus oregonensis (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). We made detailed ethograms of the oviposition behavior on unparasitized and parasitized hosts for the two species. We then compared the behavior of virgin and mated females for the oviposition of male and female progenies. The two species did not always oviposit after insertion of the ovipositor, but these punctures without oviposition could be readily differentiated from oviposition.A. victus oviposited only once by puncture, whileA. listronoti deposited one to three eggs during the same sequence. The variability of the duration of the various components was generally lower for a given female than between females. Two components, the abdominal vibrations and the pause, were significantly shorter in ovipositions that resulted in male progency for the two species. However, an important overlap in duration prevents using these differences to sex the progeny at oviposition. Virgin females of both species, although capable of producing only males, exhibited both behaviors. Parasitized hosts were recognized through internal and external markings that were used in host discrimination.

Patzner, R. A. 1980. Cyclical changes in weight and fat content of the liver and their relationship to reproduction in the hagfish Eptatretus burgeri (Cyclostomata). (Zoological Institute, University of Salzburg, Austria and Misaki Marine Biological Station, University of Tokyo, Japan.) — Acta zool. (Stockh.) 61(3): 157–160. The changes in weight and fat content of the liver in the West Pacific hagfish Eptatretus burgeri were studied over a period of one year. The liver somatic index shows a high increase from the beginning of December until migration in deeper water in July. From the beginning of April to the end of August the difference between male and female liver somatic index is statistically significant. This fact is brought in connection with the production of vitellogenin in the female liver.

The two hyperparasitoids of aphids, Dendrocerus carpenteri(Curtis) and Dendrocerus laticeps(Hedicke), differ in their interspecific host discrimination behavior: D. carpenterireadily accepts hosts for oviposition previously parasitized by D. laticeps, whereas D. laticepsoften refrains from ovipositing on hosts previously parasitized by D. carpenteri. The two species also differ in their competitive abilities: D. carpenteriis competitively superior to D. laticepswhen the time between ovipositions is 1 h. D. carpenteri's superiority probably arises from (a) the action of the venom produced by the female to paralyze the host, as evidenced by the comparison of emergence patterns from naturally vs artificially parasitized hosts, and (b) its more rapid egg development. Because of its competitive abilities, D. carpenterigains only limited benefit from discriminating interspecifically, at least when encountering a host parasitized by a competitively inferior species, such as D. laticeps. In contrast, D. laticepsgains considerable benefit from recognizing hosts previously parasitized by D. carpenteri,as the probability to produce offspring from such hosts is greatly reduced.
