Firstly, upper trapezius EMG activity patterns were recorded on the dominant side of 6 industrial production workers and on the side operating a computer mouse of 14 computer-aided design (CAD) operators to study differences in acute muscular response related to the repetitiveness of the exposure. The work tasks were performed with median arm movement frequencies ranging from 5 min(-1) to 13 min(-1) and were characterized by work cycle times ranging from less than 30 sec to several days. However, the static and median EMG levels and EMG gap frequencies were similar for all work tasks indicating that shoulder muscle loads may be unaffected by large variations in arm movement frequencies and work cycle times. An exposure variation analyses (EVA) showed that the EMG activity patterns recorded during production work were more repetitive than during CAD work, whereas CAD work was associated with more static muscle activity patterns, both may be associated with a risk of developing musculoskeletal symptoms. Secondly, upper trapezius EMG activity patterns recorded on the mouse side of the CAD operators were compared with those recorded on the non-mouse side to study differences in muscular responses potentially related to the risk of developing shoulder symptoms which were more prevalent on the mouse side. The number of EMG gaps on the mouse side were significantly lower than the values for the upper trapezius on the non-mouse side indicating that more continuous activity was present in the upper trapezius muscle on the mouse side and EVA analyses showed a more repetitive muscle activity pattern on the mouse side. These findings may be of importance to explain differences in the prevalence of shoulder symptoms.  相似文献

Altered motor control of the shoulder muscles during performance of a specific motor task in patients with shoulder disorders (SDs) has been an interesting subject to researchers. This study compared shoulder muscle activation patterns by surface electromyography (sEMG), including the upper trapezius (UT), lower trapezius (LT), and serratus anterior (SA) muscles, during four functional tasks in 25 patients with SDs and controls. A voluntary response index (VRI) was calculated, including magnitude and similarity index (SI), to quantify sEMG patterns during four functional tasks. Responsiveness and clinically meaningful levels of discrimination between patients and control for EMG magnitude and SI were determined. An altered pattern of motor control during four functional tasks was evident in the patients, in which greater EMG amplitude and abnormal EMG patterns were found. For SI among four functional tasks, normal subjects ranged from 0.80 to 1.00 while patients ranged from 0.70 to 0.99. High probabilities (97%) of discrimination between patients and normal subjects were found by SI method during an overhead height task (patients: 0.85-0.96, normal subjects: 0.95-1.00). Our results also suggest that an individual can be estimated to be abnormal when lower SI values are observed during the four functional tasks.  相似文献

This study determines whether changes in the EMG values of two important muscles of the shoulder and neck region, the anterior deltoid and the upper trapezius, are due to changes in torque production or due to fatigue processes during sustained activity. Contractions at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% MVC were performed during a flexion of the arm in the sagittal plane at 90 degrees, to examine the relation between torque and EMG. A sustained contraction at 20% MVC was performed to endurance point in the same position. RMS, a new parameter called activity, (ACT), and MPF of the deltoid anterior and the upper trapezius were analysed. The amplitude values correlated highly with increasing torque production, both for the deltoid muscle (range r = 0.95-0.96), and the trapezius muscle (range r = 0.83-0.87), whereas no significant difference was found for MPF. For the endurance task, the decrease in MPF was far more pronounced for the deltoid than for the trapezius, whereas the opposite occurred with RMS (P < or = 0.01). Furthermore, there was no significant difference over time for the ACT values of the deltoid, whereas there were significant increases in ACT for the trapezius (P < or = 0.01). The RMS/ACT ratio correlated highly (r = 0.81) with the MPF. Regression coefficients of these parameters differed significantly for the trapezius muscle but not for the deltoid muscle. Therefore, the RMS/ACT ratio may be extremely important in analysing the fatigue effects during sustained efforts, independent of torque variations, which can influence indicators of fatigue.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effect of chronic neck muscle pain (defined as trapezius myalgia) on neck/shoulder muscle function during concentric, eccentric and static contraction. Forty-two female office workers with trapezius myalgia (MYA) and 20 healthy matched controls (CON) participated. Isokinetic (-60, 60 and 180 degrees s(-1)) and static maximal voluntary shoulder abductions were performed in a Biodex dynamometer, and electromyography (EMG) obtained in the trapezius and deltoideus muscles. Muscle thickness in the trapezius was measured with ultrasound. Pain and perceived exertion were registered before and after the dynamometer test. The main findings were that shoulder abduction torque (at -60 and 60 degrees s(-1)) and trapezius EMG amplitude (at -60, 0 and 60 degrees s(-1)) were significantly lower in MYA compared with CON (p<0.001-0.05). Deltoideus EMG and trapezius muscle thickness were not significantly different between the groups. While perceived exertion increased in both groups in response to the test (p<0.0001), pain increased in MYA only (p<0.0001). In conclusion, having trapezius myalgia was associated with decreased strength capacity and lowered activity of the painful trapezius muscle. The most consistent differences-in terms of both torque and EMG-were found during slow concentric and eccentric contractions. Activity of the synergistic pain free deltoideus muscle was not significantly lower, indicating specific inhibitory feedback of the painful trapezius muscle only. Parallel increase in pain and perceived exertion among MYA were observed in response to the maximal contractions, emphasizing that heavy physical exertion provokes pain increase only in conditions of myalgia.  相似文献

Work related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are common among dentists and possibly caused by prolonged static load. The aim of this study was to assess the contraction pattern of neck and shoulder muscles of orthodontists in natural environments.Electromyographic (EMG) activity of right sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles were recorded by means of portable recorders in eight orthodontists during working conditions, and both active and resting non-working conditions. Recordings were analysed in terms of contraction episode (CE) count, amplitude, and duration.The sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles contracted about 40–70 times per hour in the natural environment. Their EMG activity pattern mainly consisted of short-lasting, low-amplitude CEs. The counts and amplitude of sternocleidomastoid CEs did not differ across vocational and non-vocational conditions. The number and amplitude of trapezius CEs were slightly but significantly higher during the vocational condition. There were highly significant (p < 0.001) differences in duration of CEs across conditions, with two to threefold increase in the average duration of trapezius muscle contractions found in the vocational setting.During orthodontic work, operators commonly hold muscular contractions for significantly longer periods than are encountered in non-vocational settings. This behaviour may be associated causally with the increases seen in WMSDs through proposed pathophysiological mechanisms occurring at the motor unit level. Our findings may also be valid for other occupations characterised by seated static postures with precision hand and wrist movements.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to explore changes in spatial muscle activation within the three divisions of the trapezius muscle during a dynamic, cyclic task of the upper limb. Surface EMG signals were detected from thirteen healthy subjects from the upper, middle and lower divisions of the trapezius muscle at multiple electrode sites in the cephalad-caudal direction during a repetitive shoulder flexion task. Initial values and rate of change of average rectified value (ARV) and of instantaneous mean power spectral frequency (iMNF) were estimated at 45 degrees , 90 degrees and 120 degrees of shoulder flexion throughout the 5-min task. The location of the electrodes had a significant effect on initial EMG ARV for both the upper and middle division of the trapezius muscle (P<0.05). Both the rate of change and normalized rate of change of ARV were greatest for the most cranial muscle fibers of the upper division (P<0.05). Initial values and rates of change of iMNF were also affected by electrode location for the upper and lower divisions of the trapezius muscle (P<0.05). These results demonstrate that muscle activity and its changes over time depend on position within the three divisions of the trapezius muscle during a dynamic, cyclic task of the upper limb. This suggests non-uniform muscle fiber distribution and/or recruitment. The results also highlight the importance of multiple recording sites when investigating trapezius muscle function in dynamic tasks.  相似文献

Pain and tenderness of the upper trapezius are the major complaints among people with chronic neck and shoulder disorders. Hyper-activation and increased muscle tension of the upper trapezius during arm elevation will cause imbalance of the scapular muscle force and contribute to neck and shoulder disorders. Assessing the elasticity of the upper trapezius in different arm positions is therefore important for identifying people at risk so as to give preventive programmes or for monitoring the effectiveness of the intervention programmes for these disorders. This study aimed to establish the reliability of supersonic shear imaging (SSI) in quantifying upper trapezius elasticity/shear elastic modulus and its ability to measure the modulation of muscle elasticity during arm elevation. Twenty-eight healthy adults (15 males, 13 females; mean age = 29.6 years) were recruited to participate in the study. In each participant, the shear elastic modulus of the upper trapezius while the arm was at rest and at 30° abduction was measured by two operators and twice by operator 1 with a time interval between the measurements. The results showed excellent within- and between-session intra-operator (ICC = 0.87–0.97) and inter-observer (ICC = 0.78–0.83) reliability for the upper trapezius elasticity with the arm at rest and at 30° abduction. An increase of 55.23% of shear elastic modulus from resting to 30° abduction was observed. Our findings demonstrate the possibilities for using SSI to quantify muscle elasticity and its potential role in delineating the modulation of upper trapezius elasticity, which is essential for future studies to compare the differences in shear elastic modulus between normal elasticity and that of individuals with neck and shoulder disorders.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate gender-specific motor control strategies during eccentric exercise and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in the shoulder region. Twelve healthy males and females participated in the study. Eccentric shoulder exercises were conducted on the dominant shoulder while the other side served as control. The exerted force, range of shoulder elevation, rating of perceived exertion, pain intensity, and surface electromyography (EMG) from the trapezius muscles were recorded and analyzed. A significant decrease in exerted force during exercise was only found in males despite similar rating of perceived exertion among genders. During eccentric exercise: males showed increasing root mean square (RMS) of the EMG while a decrease occurred for females, no difference between genders in mean power frequency of the EMG were seen. During static and dynamic contractions: no differences between genders in pain intensity or RMS were observed; RMS of the exercised side were lower than that of the control side (P<0.05) at 24 h after exercise. The results indicated a more prominent muscle fatigue resistance in females compared with males and mobilization of different muscle activation strategies during eccentric exercise. A protective adaptation to DOMS, i.e. decrease in RMS values was found with no gender differences.  相似文献

We determined the repeatability and correlations between force, endurance and muscle activity during isometric contractions over three years. Twenty-six subjects, with and without complaints of the shoulder and neck, performed standardized maximal and submaximal shoulder-abduction contractions and wrist extension-contractions at yearly intervals from 1997 to 1999. Peak forces developed during maximal contraction and the endurance times of submaximal contractions during shoulder abduction and wrist extension were measured. Electromyography (EMG) of muscle activity was recorded bilaterally from the upper trapezius, middle deltoid, and forearm extensor muscles. Root mean square EMG amplitudes were calculated. We found statistically significant associations between peak forces developed during wrist extension and shoulder abduction, and between endurance times of submaximal wrist extension and shoulder abduction. No statistically significant changes in peak force and EMG(peak) were found over the measurement years. The responses were not statistically significantly influenced by gender, or neck and shoulder pain. However, we observed considerable intra-individual variation in the inter-year measurements particularly for the responses to submaximal contraction. Such large variations represent a challenge when attempting to use the responses to interpret the effects of therapies.  相似文献

Previous studies have associated amplitude and frequency characteristics of the electromyogram (EMG) to the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) with repetitive tasks. However, few studies have investigated whether EMG variability and between-muscle activity characteristics may be associated with MSD risk. Twenty-six healthy volunteers (13 men, 13 women) performed a repetitive pointing task at shoulder height until scoring 8 on a Borg CR-10 scale. Electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded from six neck/shoulder muscle sites. EMG amplitude (RMS), variability and mutual information (MI) among muscle pairs were computed. Muscle fatigue was evidenced by increased EMG RMS of four muscles (Upper Trapezius (UT): +17%; supraspinatus (SUPRA): +28%; middle deltoid: +13%; biceps brachii: +38%) and increased SUPRA variability. Correlations between minute 1 patterns and endurance time indicated that in women, initially high variability in UTR (r = 0.79) and SUPRA (r = 0.71) predicted higher endurance, whereas in men, initially low MI in LT–UT (?0.69) and in LT–SUPRA (?0.77) pairs predicted high endurance. Significant correlations suggest that variability and between-muscle patterns may be associated with fatigue and injury mechanisms, in a gender-specific way. Differing fatigue mechanisms between genders could help explain gender differences in injury mechanisms.  相似文献

Physiological responses to physical work were assessed for 29 female industrial sewing-machine operators during an 8-h working day under ordinary working conditions. During sewing-machine work, the average (left and right) static load in the trapezius muscle was 9% of the maximal electromyogram (EMG) amplitude (% EMGmax), while the average mean load was 15% EMGmax, and the average peak load was 23% EMGmax. The static load level was unrelated to the muscle strength of the sewing-machine operators, which for the group as a whole was within the normal range. The load levels remained unchanged during the working day, while changes in the EMG mean power frequency and zero crossing frequency rate occurred, both indicating the development of muscle fatigue in left and right trapezius muscle during the working day. In line with this, the rating of perceived exertion in the shoulder and neck region increased during. the working day. Dividing the group of sewing-machine operators into two groups, those with the highest frequency and those with the lowest frequency of shoulder/neck troubles showed that the former group had significantly lower muscle strength, despite the fact that no differences in the surface EMG during sewing were found between the two groups. It was concluded that industrial sewing-machine work involves a pattern of shoulder muscle activity which induces fatiguing processes in the shoulder and neck regions. Furthermore, since the static shoulder muscle load was independent of muscle strength, factors other than working posture may be of significance for the static shoulder muscle load.  相似文献

Surface electromyography (EMG) has been used extensively to estimate muscular load in studies of work related musculoskeletal disorders, especially for the trapezius muscle. The occurrences of periods of EMG silence (gaps), the time below a predetermined threshold level (muscular rest) and various percentiles of the amplitude distribution (APDF) are commonly used summary measures. However, the effects of the criteria used to calculate these measures (e.g., gap duration, threshold level, normalisation method) on the sensitivity of these measures to accurately differentiate work loads is not well known.Bilateral trapezius EMG was recorded, for a full workday, for 58 subjects following both maximal (MVE) and submaximal (RVE) reference contractions. Gap frequency, muscular rest, and percentiles were derived for eight fundamental work tasks. The calculations were performed using different gap duration criteria, threshold levels and normalisation methods.A gap duration of less than 1/2 s, and threshold level approximately 0.3% MVE for gap frequency, and approximately 0.5% MVE for muscular rest, were the criteria that optimised sensitivity to task differences. Minimal sensitivity to tasks and a high sensitivity to individuals was obtained using gap frequency with a threshold level of approximately 1% MVE. Normalisation to RVE, rather than MVE, improved sensitivity to differences between tasks, and reduced undesirable variability. Muscular rest was more sensitive to task differences than APDF percentiles.  相似文献

Poor visual ergonomics is associated with visual and neck/shoulder discomfort, but the relation between visual demands and neck/shoulder muscle activity is unclear. The aims of this study were to investigate whether trapezius muscle activity was affected by: (i) eye-lens accommodation; (ii) incongruence between accommodation and convergence; and (iii) presence of neck/shoulder discomfort. Sixty-six participants (33 controls and 33 with neck pain) performed visually demanding near work under four different trial-lens conditions. Results showed that eye-lens accommodation per se did not affect trapezius muscle activity significantly. However, when incongruence between accommodation and convergence was present, a significant positive relationship between eye-lens accommodation and trapezius muscle activity was found. There were no significant group-differences. It was concluded that incongruence between accommodation and convergence is an important factor in the relation between visually demanding near work and trapezius muscle activity. The relatively low demands on accommodation and convergence in the present study imply that visually demanding near work may contribute to increased muscle activity, and over time to the development of near work related neck/shoulder discomfort.  相似文献

The aim was to investigate whether output and electromyogram (EMG) variables obtained from an isokinetic endurance test of the shoulder flexor muscles of 23 women with neck and shoulder problems in a car and truck industry correlated with improvement or worsening of complaints 1 year later. Each subject performed 100 maximal isokinetic shoulder forward flexions at 60° · s−1. Surface EMG of the trapezius, deltoid, biceps brachii and infraspinatus muscles and mechanical output (peak torque) were determined for each contraction. The EMG was used to determine mean frequency f mean and the ratio between the signal amplitudes of the EMG of the passive relaxation and active flexion parts of each contraction cycle (SAR). The subjects also rated the degree of fatigue they experienced throughout the test. The magnitude of the shift in f mean was correlated with whether improvement or worsening occurred for complaints in the neck and or shoulders; a significant relationship (r 2 = 0.44; P = 0.001) existed between the total frequency shift of the four muscles and the variables measuring improvement in complaints. In the multivariate predictions other f mean variables and perception of fatigue were also of significance. The present study would indicate that a high degree of f mean shift correlates with improvement in neck and shoulder complaints 1 year later. One possible reason could be that f mean reflects the muscle morphology and/or a pathological situation for the type-1 muscle fibres. Accepted: 27 May 1998  相似文献

Surface electromyograms(EMG) during test contractions (TCs) were studied to assess the muscle strain in simulated mushroom picking. Additionally, the duration of the TC for the effective assessment was investigated. Nine female subjects performed standardized shoulder abduction and a stooped posture for one minute as TCs. Each experiment consisted of a 60-min rest, three work periods (W1-W3), a 30-min rest, and two work periods (W4 and W5) separated by a 30-min rest period. The duration of each work period was about 20 min. A total of 18 TCs was performed between the work periods and every 10 minutes in the rest periods. EMGs were recorded from the trapezius, infraspinatus, deltoid, and erector spinae muscles. The amplitude of EMG (AEMG) and mean power frequency (MPF) of EMG were calculated. Each TC was divided equally into three parts. Ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) in the neck, shoulder and low-back were reported during TCs. The work increased RPE of all the parts. AEMG and RPE were increased and MPF was decreased by W1, W2 and W3 in the neck and shoulder muscles. MPF of the erector spinae was increased by the work. The results were not affected by the duration of TCs and the parts during the TCs. AEMG and MPF fluctuated before W1 although the changes of RPE were small. Averaging several TCs was recommended to get stable results from TCs. EMG changes and appropriate TC conditions were discussed in relation to the adaptation in fatiguing contractions.  相似文献

This study sought to characterize muscle loading and fatigue during static shoulder abductions with varying force. In a supine posture, participants maintained fixed shoulder abductions against a time-varying external resistance, generated by a dynamometer-spring mechanism. Patterns (cumulative distribution) of the external resistance were varied by selecting different 10th and 90th percentiles of the distribution. Dynamometer angular velocities were also varied, to reflect different rates of cyclic muscle contraction. The degree of local fatigue development was assessed by common measures, including endurance time, strength reduction, and perceived discomfort. Myoelectric (EMG) signals were continuously obtained from the middle deltoid muscle throughout experimental exercise (60min max). Changes in EMG root-mean-square (RMS) and spectral measures (derived from 1-s windows at peaks in the cyclic contractions) were used as manifestations of muscle fatigue. For each minute, the RMS signal was further reduced using two methods, the cumulative probability distribution of EMG (CPDE) and exposure variation analysis (EVA). The former resulted in three percentile values (10th, 50th, and 90th), whereas the latter method resulted in 10 different measures (grouped by EMG activity level and duration). A main finding of the study was the applicability of several common fatigue indicators for these cyclic, repetitive exertions. Overall, the use of CPDE and EVA to characterize task differences and predict muscle fatigue was found to have limited value.  相似文献

An inability to perform tasks involving reaching is a common problem for stroke patients. Knowledge of normal muscle activation patterns during these tasks is essential to the identification of abnormal patterns in post-stroke hemiplegia. Findings will provide insight into changes in muscle activation patterns associated with recovery of upper limb function.In this study with neurologically intact participants the co-ordination of shoulder and elbow muscle activity during two dimensional reaching tasks is explored. Eight participants undertook nine tracking tasks in which trajectory (orientation and length), duration, speed and resistance to movement were varied. The participants’ forearm was supported using a hinged arm-holder, which constrained their hand to move in a two dimensional plane. EMG signals were recorded from triceps, biceps, anterior deltoid, upper, middle and lower trapezius and pectoralis major.A wide variation in muscle activation patterns, in terms of timing and amplitude, was observed between participants performing the same task. EMG amplitude increased significantly with length, duration and resistance of the task for all muscles except anterior deltoid. Co-activation between biceps and triceps was significantly dependent on both task and trajectory orientation. Activation pattern of pectoralis major was dependent on trajectory. Neither trajectory orientation nor task condition affected the activation pattern of anterior deltoid. Normal ranges of timing of muscle activity during the tasks were identified.  相似文献

Mental stress was induced by the Stroop colour word task (CW task) and the effects on the micro-circulation and electromyography (EMG) in the upper portion of the trapezius muscle were studied during a series of fatiguing, standardized static contractions. A lowered blood flow of the skin recorded continuously by laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) was used as a stress indicator in addition to an elevated heart rate. Muscle blood flow was recorded continuously by LDF using a single optical fibre placed inside the muscle, and related to surface EMG. A group of 20 healthy women of different ages was examined. Recordings were made during a 50-min period in the following sequence: a 10-min series of alternating 1-min periods of rest and stepwise increased contraction induced by keeping the arms straight and elevated at 30, 60, 90 and 135° with a 1-kg load carried in each hand; a 10-min recovery period without load; a repeated contraction series with simultaneous performance of the CW task; a second 10-min recovery period, and a second contraction series without CW task. Signal processing was done on line by computer. The LDF and root mean square (rms)-EMG values were calculated, as well as the EMG mean power frequency (MPF) for fatigue. The CW-task added to the contraction series caused an increase in the heart rate accompanied by a decrease in the blood flow to the skin and a 30% increase in the blood flow in the exercising muscle. Both returned to normal during the subsequent recovery period and showed normal levels during the final contraction series without CW. The rms-EMG showed a 20% increase that persisted during the final contraction series performed without CW. There was no influence on MPF. This CW has previously been shown to evoke an increased secretion of adrenaline from the adrenal medullae to the blood. The increased blood flow in the exercising muscle would therefore appear to have been caused by -adrenoceptor vasodilatation, and the fall in the blood flow in the skin by -adrenoceptor vasoconstriction. The findings may have implications for work situations characterized by repetitive static loads to the shoulder muscles and psychological stress.  相似文献

Electromyography (EMG) recordings from the trapezius are often contaminated by the electrocardiography (ECG) signal, making it difficult to distinguish low-level muscle activity from muscular rest. This study investigates the influence of ECG contamination on EMG amplitude and frequency estimations in the upper trapezius during muscular rest and low-level contractions. A new method of ECG contamination removal, filtered template subtraction (FTS), is described and compared to 30 Hz high-pass filter (HPF) and averaged template subtraction (ATS) methods. FTS creates a unique template of each ECG artifact using a low-pass filtered copy of the contaminated signal, which is subtracted from contaminated periods in the original signal. ECG contamination results in an over-estimation of EMG amplitude during rest in the upper trapezius, with negligible effects on amplitude and frequency estimations during low-intensity isometric contractions. FTS and HPF successfully removed ECG contamination from periods of muscular rest, yet introduced errors during muscle contraction. Conversely, ATS failed to fully remove ECG contamination during muscular rest, yet did not introduce errors during muscle contraction. The relative advantages and disadvantages of different ECG contamination removal methods should be considered in the context of the specific motor tasks that require analysis.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper was to compare the effects of different data reduction procedures on the values of variables characterizing the time pattern of trapezius muscle activity during full work shifts. Surface electromyography (EMG) of the right and left upper trapezius muscles were obtained from 40 young subjects in different occupations, mainly electricians, hairdressers and students. The target EMG variables were gap frequency, muscle rest, and the number and duration of episodes with sustained muscle activity (from 0.13 s to 30 min as minimum duration). These variables were derived from the EMG recordings using different Root Mean Square (RMS) windows (from 0.13 to 6.38 s), and discrimination levels between “activity” and “rest” (0.5%, 1% and 2% of maximal EMG).The results give basis for practical suggestions for EMG analyses of full work shifts. For most variables, a discrimination level of 0.5% EMGmax showed to be preferable. The time proportion of muscle rest and sustained muscle activity should, in general, be preferred over the corresponding frequency measures. Sustained muscle activity should be calculated using a RMS window between 1 and 3 s, and preferably be stated in terms of variables describing time proportions of activity.
