The phytoplankton productivity of Georgian Bay was studied during 1974. Lakewide samples were collected at 16 stations during monthly cruises from April to December and identification and enumeration was carried out by the Utermohl technique. Contaminant bioassays with metals added singly and as a mixture were performed in 1980 and 1981. Based on an overall average, Diatomeae (36–73%) was the most prevalent component of phytoplankton biomass followed by Chrysophyceae (5–38%), and Cyanophyta (3–27%). Biomass means of all stations by cruise indicated a range of 0.35 to 0.61 g·m–3 with a bimodal seasonal pattern. Although ultraplankton made the highest mean percent contribution to the biomass (37%), the other size assemblages such as < 5 µm (26%) and netplankton (29%) were not unimportant.Size fractionation of primary productivity during 1974 revealed that a major portion of photosynthesis (39–70%) was in the <20 µm size fraction. Algal Fractionation Bioassays conducted during 1980 and 1981 indicated a significant inhibition of ultraplankton productivity. Additional bioassays with single metals and in combination showed differential toxicity to various phytoplankton size assemblages. The phytoplankton biomass and floristic composition indicate the Georgian Bay ecosystem to be oligotrophic. This ecosystem appears to be controlled by the physical dynamics of thermal and flow regimes. Compared with other Great Lakes, the low P/B quotients recorded in oligotrophic Georgian Bay is enigmatic and may be attributable to the observed sensitivity of phytoplankton to contaminants originating from anthropogenic and natural sources.  相似文献

Thirty-nine subgeneric taxa of macroalgae have been collected from 83 sites in Georgian Bay, the North Channel and their drainage basin. There were 15 species in the Bay and Channel and 32 species in streams, rivers and impoundments in the basin. Only 8 of the Bay and Channel species were also found in the watershed. Cladophora glomerata was the most important species in Georgian Bay and the North Channel, having an estimated 640 × 103 m2 cover and 19 × 104 kg fresh weight standing crop. However, this species was largely concentrated on the southwestern shorelines of these water bodies. Its distribution along the northeastern shoreline appears to be limited by total ion and phosphorus levels. Chara globularis/vulgaris was the subdominant taxon in Georgian Bay and the North Channel with an estimated 70 × 103 m2 cover and 15 × 103 kg fresh weight biomass. This species was more widely distributed than C. glomerata. No other taxon contributed significantly to the standing crop including the frequently occurring Ulothrix zonata, Zygnema spp. and Spirogyra spp. The maximum benthic macroalgal biomass was estimated to be approximately 10% of the phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

Suspension feeding by bivalves has been hypothesized to control phytoplankton biomass in shallow aquatic ecosystems. Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina, USA is a shallow lake with a diverse bivalve assemblage and low to moderate phytoplankton biomass levels. Filtration and ingestion rates of two relatively abundant species in the lake, the endemic unionid, Elliptio waccamawensis, and an introduced species, Corbicula fluminea, were measured in experiments using natural phytoplankton for durations of 1 to 6 days. Measured filtration and ingestion rates averaged 1.78 and 1.121 ind.–1 d–1, much too low to control phytoplankton at the observed phytoplankton biomass levels and growth rates. Measured ingestion rates averaged 4.80 and 1.50 µg chlorophyll a ind.–1 d–1, too low to support individuals of either species. The abundance of benthic microalgae in Lake Waccamaw reaches 200 mg chlorophyll a m–2 in the littoral zone and averages almost an order of magnitude higher than depth-integrated phytoplankton chlorophyll a. Total microalgal biomass in the lake is therefore not controlled by suspension feeding by bivalves.  相似文献

Phytoplankton often develop various defense mechanisms in response to zooplankton grazing, such as spines and colonies. While it is now known that increased spine length and cells in a colony of members of the genus Scenedesmus, when zooplankton grazing is intense, helps in reducing zooplankton filtering rates, the effect of these defense mechanisms at the population level has been observed in few studies. Here we present data on the growth rates of four zooplankton species, Brachionus calyciflorus, B. patulus, Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia pulex at two food levels using two species of colony-forming Scenedesmus spp.: S. acutus (cell length = 18.2 ± 0.4 µm; width = 4.2 ± 0.1 µm; average colony length = 90 µm; width: 21 µm) and S. quadricauda (cell length: 21 ± 0.5 width 7.5 ± 0.3 µm; average colony length: 84 µm; width: 30 µm). Whereas S. acutus had no spines, S. quadricauda had spines of 6–10 µm. Population growth experiments of the test rotifers and cladocerans were conducted in 100 ml containers with 50 ml of the medium with test algae. Algae concentrations used were: 13 and 52 mg dw l–1 of each of the two algal species offered in colonial forms. We used an initial inoculation zooplankter density of 1 ind. ml–1 for either of the rotifer species and 0.2 ind. ml–1 for either of the cladoceran species. In all, we had 64 test containers (4 test species of zooplankton × 2 test species of algae × 2 algal densities × 4 replicates). We found a significant effect of algal size on the growth rates of all the four tested species of zooplankton. The population growth rates of zooplankton ranged from –0.58 to 0.66 and were significantly higher on diet of S. acutus than of S. quadricauda. Thus, our study confirms that the larger colony size and the formation of spines in S. quadricauda were effective defenses against grazing by both rotifers and smaller sized cladoceran Ceriodaphnia dubia but that larger-bodied Daphnia pulex could exploit both the algal populations equally.  相似文献

Short term variations of zooplankton populations were studied during an algal spring bloom in two characteristic areas of the Marennes-Oléron Bay (France). The sampling sites were chosen in the north of the bay, one close to the neritic zone, the other close to the estuarine zone. Five distinct zooplanktonic communities were observed: two typical neritic and estuarine assemblages, two eurytopic groups (linked to neritic or estuarine water masses) and an autochtonous community, widely distributed in the north of the bay. The copepod Euterpina acutifrons dominated the zooplankton community during this period of the year in terms of abundance (up to 83% of the zooplankton community). Its production differed between water masses: the highest production occurred at the estuarine station (3.48 ± 0.65 mg C m–3 d–1), where nauplii accounted for a large part of these high values. Its P/B ratio was similar at the two stations (0.196 and 0.209 d–1).  相似文献

Carbon standing stocks and fluxes were studied in the lagoon of Tikehau atoll (Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia), from 1983 to 1988.The average POC concentration (0.7–2000 µm) was 203 mg C m–3. The suspended living carbon (31.6 mg C m–3) was made up of bacteria (53%), phytoplankton < 5 µm (14.2%), phytoplankton > 5 µm (14.2%), nanozooplankton 5–35 µm (5.7%), microzooplankton 35–200 µm (4.7%) and mesozooplankton 200–2000 µm (7.9%). The microphytobenthos biomass was 480 mg C m–2.Suspended detritus (84.4% of the total POC) did not originate from the reef flat but from lagoonal primary productions. Their sedimentation exceeded phytobenthos production. It was estimated that 50% of bacterial biomass was adsorbed on particles. the bacterial biomass dominance was explained by the utilisation of 1) DOC excreted by phytoplankton (44–175 mg C m–2 day –1) and zooplankton (50 mg Cm–2 day–1)2) organic compounds produced by solar-induced photochemical reactions 3) coral mucus.50% of the phytoplankton biomass belongs to the < 5 µm fraction. This production (440 mg C m–2 day–1) exceeded phytobenthos production (250 mg C m–2 day–1) when the whole lagoon was considered. The zooplankton > 35 µm ingested 315 mg C m–2 day–1, made up of phytoplankton, nanozooplankton and detritus. Its production was 132 mg C m–2 day–1.  相似文献

The phytoplankton and nutrient status of the embayments between Penetanguishene and Waubaushene in southern Georgian Bay (Severn Sound) were examined during the ice-free periods of 1973–1982 because the area showed symptoms of excessive nutrient enrichment. Four wastewater treatment plants currently discharge to the area, another is under construction and a sixth plant has been proposed. Except for Penetang Bay, the area is well-mixed by prevailing winds but is somewhat isolated from the main part of Georgian Bay. Average phytoplankton biomasses throughout the area were 10–20× higher than values from adjacent Nottawasaga Bay where, during 1980, total phytoplankton biomass ranged between 0.15 and 0.25 mm3 · l–1. Total phosphorus concentrations were highest in Penetang Bay, ranging between 30 and 49 µg P · l–1 (May–September means) over the 10 year period. Phosphorus concentrations in Nottawasaga Bay averaged 4–6 µg P · l–1 and no significant differences were detected among the sampling stations; however, phytoplankton densities at stations near urban centres and river inflows were significantly higher than at more remote offshore sites and attests to the use of phytoplankton as a sensitive measure of trophic status in Georgian Bay.Although improvement of Severn Sound water quality to a level comparable to that presently existing in Nottawasaga Bay may never be practical, steps are being taken to control high industrial phosphorus loading and to lessen bypassing of sewage treatment facilities previously hydraulically overloaded during periods of heavy runoff. These measures, along with an evaluation of other major sources of nutrients to Severn Sound, should enable a refinement of the nutrient management programme for Severn Sound and some improvement in trophic status.  相似文献

The paper summarizes the results of a ten-year (1981–1991) zooplankton research on the Lake Loosdrecht, a highly eutrophic lake. The main cause of the lake's eutrophication and deteriorating water quality was supply up to mid 1984 of water from the River Vecht. This supply was replaced by dephosphorized water from the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal in 1984. The effects of this and other restoration measures on the lake's ecosystem were studied. Despite a reduction in the external P-load from ca. 1.0 g P m–2 y–1 to ca. 0.35 g m–2 y–1 now, the filamentous prokaryotes, including cyanobacteria and Prochlorothrix, continue to dominate the phytoplankton.Among the crustacean plankton Bosmina spp, Chydorus sp. and three species of cyclopoid copepods and their nauplii are quite common. Though there was no major change in the composition of abundant species, Daphnia cucullata, which is the only daphnid in these lakes, became virtually extinct since 1989. Among about 20 genera and 40 species of rotifers the important ones are: Anuraeopsis fissa, Keratella cochlearis, Filinia longiseta and Polyarthra. The rotifers usually peak in mid-summer following the crustacean peak in spring. The mean annual densities of crustaceans decreased during 1988–1991. Whereas seston (< 150 µm) mean mass in the lake increased since 1983 by 20–60%, zooplankton (> 150 µm) mass decreased by 15–35%.The grazing by crustacean community, which was attributable mainly to Bosmina, had mean rates between 10 and 25% d–1. Between 42 and 47% of the food ingested was assimilated. In spring and early summer when both rotifers and crustaceans have their maximal densities the clearance rates of the rotifers were much higher. Based on C/P ratios, the zooplankton (> 150 µm) mass contained 2.5 times more phosphorus than seston (< 150 µm) mass so that the zooplankton comprised 12.5 % of the total-P in total particulate matter in the open water, compared with only 4.5% of the total particulate C. The mean excretion rates of P by zooplankton varied narrowly between 1.5 and 1.8 µg P 1 d–1, which equalled between 14 and 28% d–1 of the P needed for phytoplankton production. The lack of response to restoration measures cannot be ascribed to one single factor. Apparently, the external P-loading is still not low enough and internal P-loading, though low, may be still high enough to sustain high seston levels. Intensive predation by bream is perhaps more important than food quality (high concentrations of filamentous cyanobacteria) in depressing the development of large-bodied zooplankton grazers, e.g. Daphnia. This may also contribute to resistance of the lake's ecosystem to respond to rehabilitation measures.  相似文献

Patterns in the size distribution and taxonomic composition of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities for 1974 in Georgian Bay and the North Channel are described. The Diatomeae predominate the phytoplankton in both areas. Copepods, particularly Calanoida, comprise the greatest fraction of the zooplankton biomass. Normalized plankton biomass spectra for both ecosystems are typical of those found in Lake Superior and offshore Lake Huron. The plankton communities of Georgian Bay and the North Channel are thus similar to the most oligotrophic of the Laurentian Great Lakes.  相似文献

Data on phosphate excretion rates of zooplankton are based on measurements using the pelagic crustacean zooplankton of Lake Vechten and laboratory-cultured Daphnia galeata. In case of Daphnia sp we measured the effects of feeding on P-rich algae and P-poor algae (Scenedesmus) as food on the P-excretion rates at 20°C. The excretion rates of the natural zooplankton community, irrespective of the influence of the factors mentioned, varied by an order of magnitude: 0.025–0.275µg PO4-Pmg–1C in zooplankton (C zp ) h–1. The temperature accounted for about half the observed variation in excretion rates. The mean excretion rates in the lake, computed for 20°C, varied between 0.141 and 0.260 µg Pmg–1C zp h–1. Based on data of zooplankton biomass in the lake the P-regeneration rates by zooplankton covered between 22 and 239% of the P-demand of phytoplankton during the different months of the study period. In D. galeata, whereas the C/P ratios of the Scenedesmus used as food differed by a factor 5 in the experiments, the excretion rates differed by factor 3 only. Despite the higher P-excretion rates (0.258± 0.022 µg PO4-P mg–1 C h–1) of the daphnids fed with P-rich food than those fed with P-poor food (0.105 ± 0.047 µg PO4-P mg–1 C hp–1), both the categories of the animals were apparently conserving P. A survey of the literature on zooplankton excretion shows that in Daphnia the excretion rates vary by a factor 30, irrespective of the species and size of animals and method of estimation and temperature used.About two-thirds of this variation can be explained by size and temperature. A major problem of comparability of studies on P-regeneration by zooplankton relates to the existing techniques of P determination, which necessitates concentrating the animals several times above the in situ concentration (crowding) and prolonged experimental duration (starving), both of which manifest in marked changes that probably lead to underestimation of the real rates.  相似文献

Total oxygen uptake, bacterial oxygen uptake, total bacterial biomass and active bacterial biomass were determined at the sediment-water interface at two stations in the brackish Roskilde Fjord between September and December in 1986 before, during and after sedimentation of a phytoplankton bloom. Bacterial oxygen consumption was separated from total oxygen consumption by addition of cycloheximide. The fractional and the absolute bacterial oxygen uptake were greatest at the most eutrophic station, where total oxygen uptake was 870–1740 mg O2 m–2 d–1 and the bacterial oxygen uptake was 232–870 mg O2 m–2 d–1. At the less eutrophic station, total oxygen uptake was 725–1740 mg O2 m–2 d–1. and bacterial oxygen uptake was 200–550 mg O2 m–2 d–1.Active bacterial biomass was separated from total bacterial biomass by addition of the terminal electron acceptor INT-formazan. The active bacterial biomass was 70–120 µg C mg–1 ww of sediment at the most eutrophic station and 50–90 µg C g–1 ww of sediment at the other station. Differences in capacity of bacterial oxygen uptake between the two stations correlated to the active bacterial biomass. The non-temperature dependent bacterial oxygen uptake correlated with the sedimentation rate.  相似文献

Phosphorus and nitrogen excretion rates by zooplankton communities from two eutrophic and shallow Dutch lakes were measured in laboratory. The variations in excretion rates in the lakes (May–October) were caused mainly by fluctuation in zooplankton biomass. Mean summer excretion rates (June–September) were 2.4 and 0.9 µg PO4P·1–1·d–1 in Lake Loosdercht and Lake Breukeleveen, respectively. This difference between the lakes was caused mainly by the lower zooplankton biomass in Lake Breukeleveen. The excretion of 2.4 µg PO4P·1–1·d compared with the calculated P-demand of phytoplankton of 8.0 µg PO4P·1–1·d–1 is substantial in the summer (June–September) and far more important than the external P-supply of 0.4 µg P·1–1·d–1 and sediment release of 0.5 µg P·1–1·d–1. Both temperature and composition of zooplankton affected the weight specific excretion rates of the zooplankton community. The weight specific community excretion rates of P and N increased with temperature (exponential model); 1–8 g PO4P·mg–1 zooplankton-C·d–1 and 5–42 µg NH3N·mg–1 zooplankton-C·d–1 (10°C–20°C).  相似文献

We tested the effects of UV-B stressed algae on grazing rates of zooplankton. Four algal species (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Cryptomonas sp., Scenedesmus obliquus and Microcystis aeruginosa) were used as food and fed to three zooplankton species (Daphnia galeata, Bosmina longirostris and Brachionus calyciflorus), representing different taxonomic groups. The phytoplankton species were cultured under PAR conditions, and under PAR supplemented with UV-B radiation at two intensities (0.3 W m–2 and 0.7 W m–2, 6 hours per day). Ingestion and incorporation experiments were performed at two food levels (0.1 and 1.0 mg C l–1) using radiotracer techniques. The effect of food concentration on ingestion and incorporation rate was significant for all three zooplankton species, but the effect of UV-B radiation was more complex. The reactions of the zooplankton species to UV-B stressed algae were different. UV-B stressed algae did not affect Daphnia grazing rates. For Bosmina the rates increased when feeding on UV-B stressed Microcystis and decreased when feeding on UV-B stressed Chlamydomonas, compared with non-stressed algae. Brachionus grazing rates were increased when feeding on UV-B stressed Cryptomonas and UV-B stressed Scenedesmus, and decreased when feeding on UV-B stressed Microcystis, compared with non-stressed algae. These results suggest that on a short time scale UV-B radiation may result in increased grazing rates of zooplankton, but also in decreased grazing rates. Long term effects of UV-B radiation on phytoplankton and zooplankton communities are therefore difficult to predict.  相似文献

Grazing by the large caddisfly larva, Dicosmoecus gilvipes (Trichoptera; Limnephilidae), drastically reduced periphyton biomass in laboratory channels at a current velocity of 20 cm s–1. Reduction in biomass as chl a and AFDW ranged from 88 to 93% and 82 to 85%, respectively. On average, grazing rate increased with in-channel SRP (soluble reactive phosphorus) content from 6 to 10 µg 1–1. Grazing rates averaged 25.9–29.3 µg chl a m–2 d–1 and 10.8–12.2 µg chl a mg–1 d–1 based on area and grazer biomass, respectively, with most variability among treatments being due to the grazing effect. Grazing tended to shift the algal community increasingly to filamentous blue-green algae regardless of enrichment. After three weeks, Phormidium comprised over 61% of the community in grazed treatments but only 35% in ungrazed treatments. The stalked diatom Gomphonema comprised only 4% of the grazed community, but 11% in the three ungrazed channels with similar values for Scenedesmus. A model that includes grazing was calibrated to the data and produced a reasonable expectation of periphyton biomass over a range in SRP concentrations. While the model with constant grazer abundance predicts a gradually increasing grazed biomass as SRP increases, grazer production in natural streams may actually increase to accommodate the increased food production.  相似文献

Ingestion and assimilation rates of Euchlanis dilatata lucksiana Hauer, isolated from Lake Loosdrecht (The Netherlands) and cultured on lake water (seston < 33 µm), were measured in the laboratory using the 14C-tracer technique. The five taxa used as tracer foods, together with 6–7 mg C l–1 of lake seston in each case, included four species of filamentous cyanobacteria (Oscillatoria redekei, O. limnetica, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Anabaena PCC 7120) and a prochlorophyte (Prochlorothrix hollandica). Except Anabaena, they are all commonly encountered in eutrophic Loosdrecht lakes, including Lake Loosdrecht, and their dimensions ranged between 150 and 250 µm in length and 2 and 3.5 µm in width. The small and large Euchlanis used as experimental animals had mean lengths of 217–223 µm and 276–305 µm, respectively. Euchlanis fed on all the taxa offered as food. Clearance rates ranged from 51 to 99 µl ind–1 d–1 for the large animals and from 22 to 41 µl ind–1 d–1 for the small animals. The highest ingestion rate observed, 1.7 µg ind–1 d–1, was for the large animals feeding on Aphanizomenon. The daily ration for both size classes far exceeded 100% of body weight, reaching up to 690% for the small animals feeding on Aphanizomenon. The small animals generally appeared to assimilate the ingested food more efficiently (assimilation efficiencies: 37–100%) than the large animals (34–77%). Compared with an earlier study in which only lake seston (<33 µm) was used as food, the specific clearance rates of Euchlanis on the cyanobacteria and Prochlorothrix were generally somewhat lower.  相似文献

The species composition, biomass, abundance and species diversity of zooplankton were determined for samples collected from 12 stations in Sanmen Bay, China, in four cruises from August 2002 to May 2003. Growth of phytoplankton and grazing rates of microzooplankton were measured using the dilution technique. The spatial and temporal variation of zooplankton and its relationship with environmental factors were also analyzed. The results showed that a total of 89 species of zooplankton belonging to 67 genera and 16 groups of pelagic larvae were found in Sanmen Bay. The coastal low-saline species was the dominant ecotype in the study area, and the dominant species were Calanus sinicus, Labidocera euchaeta, Tortanus derjugini, Acartia pacifica, Pseudeuphausia sinica and Sagitta bedoti. Maximum biomass was recorded in August, followed by November and May, and the lowest biomass was recorded in February. Similarly, the highest abundance of zooplankton was observed in August, followed by May, November, and February. Grazing pressure of microzooplankton on phytoplankton in Sanmen Bay existed throughout the year, although the grazing rate of microzooplankton on phytoplankton varied with the season. Estimates for growth rate of phytoplankton ranged from 0.25 d−1 to 0.89 d−1, whereas grazing rate of microzooplankton ranged between 0.18 d−1 and 0.68 d−1 in different seasons. The growth rate of phytoplankton exceeded the grazing rate of microzooplankton in all the seasons. Grazing pressure of microzooplankton on phytoplankton ranged from 16.1% d−1 to 49.1% d−1, and the grazing pressure of microzooplankton on primary production of phytoplankton ranged from 58.3% d−1 to 83.6% d−1 in different seasons.  相似文献

The seasonal variation in primary production, individual numbers, and biomass of phyto- and zooplankton was studied in the River Danube in 1981. The secondary production of two dominant zooplankton species (Bosmina longirostris and Acanthocyclops robustus) was also estimated. In the growing season (April–Sept.) individual numbers dry weights and chlorophyll a contents of phytoplankton ranged between 30–90 × 106 individuals, l–1, 3–12 mg l–1, and 50–170 µg l–1, respectively. Species of Thalassiosiraceae (Bacillariophyta) dominated in the phytoplankton with a subdominance of Chlorococcales in summer. Individual numbers and dry weights of crustacean zooplankton ranged between 1400–6500 individuals m–3, and 1.2–12 mg m–3, respectively. The daily mean gross primary production was 970 mg C m–3 d–1, and the net production was 660 mg C m–3 d–1. Acanthocyclops robustus populations produced 0.2 mg C m–3 d–1 as an average, and Bosmina longirostris populations 0.07 mg C m–3 d–1. The ecological efficiency between phytoplankton and crustacean zooplankton was 0.03%.  相似文献

About 650 zooplankton samples were collected from Lake Inarijärvi in 1977–1979 from the littoral and pelagial zones of the lake. One hundred and twenty-three zooplankton taxa were found and most of them can be considered euplanktonic. The most important species were Holopedium gibberum, Daphnia cristata, Cyclops spp. and Eudiaptomus spp. Mean pelagial zooplankton biomass was 0.29 g m–3 in the 0–5 m depth zone, 0.17 g m–3 in 5–10 m and 0.11 g m–3 in 10–20 m.The zooplankton biomass at a sandy shore was about 0.09 g m–3, at a stony shore 0.05 g m–3 and at a vegetated shore 0.76 g m–3. About 70% of the whole zooplankton production consisted of crustaceans. The sum of herbivore and carnivore zooplankton production in the pelagial area during the summer was 210–330 kg ha–1 × 3 months.  相似文献

Georgian Bay comprises the easternmost part of the Michigan-Huron water system and extensive data were collected here in 1974 by the Canada Centre For Inland Waters. Fifty-one stations were monitored between April and December of 1974; the time series recordings of currents and temperature at 10 locations, meteorological recordings at two buoys, and water level recordings from temporary gauges were carried out. Minimum surface temperature of 0 °C persists for one month commencing in late February and maximum surface temperatures occurred in early August (19 °C). The annual heat income for Georgian Bay was estimated to be 43 700 cal · cm–2. The exchange at Main Channel has a significant influence on water residence and flushing times in Georgian Bay which determines its trophic status.  相似文献

This study documents for the first time both vertical and horizontal distribution patterns of the zooplankton community in Lake Kinneret during the period of thermal stratification. The zooplankton distribution patterns were explored in relation to abiotic (temperature, oxygen) and biotic (picocyanobacteria, ciliates, flagellates, phytoplankton, fish) environmental gradients. Sampling was carried out on 6–7 July 1992 at five stations and six depths from nearshore to offshore. Zooplankton abundance and biomass varied from 5 to 267 ind. l–1(mean: 95 ind. l–1), and from 0.1 to 65 d.w. mg m–3(mean: 24 d.w. mg m–3). Zooplankton taxonomic groups (Rotifera, Cladocera, Cyclopoida, Calanoida) and size classes (micro-, meso- and macrozooplankton) showed peaks of maximal density and biomass in the epilimnetic and metalimnetic strata (5 and 14 m). Depth, accounting for 31–39% of total spatial variation, reflected the vertical distribution of zooplankton in relation to temperature and oxygen declines, and the higher concentration of food resources (protists and phytoplankton) in the epilimnion and metalimnion. Onshore–offshore distance, accounting for 17–22% of the total spatial variance, reflected different distribution patterns shown among zooplankton groups and size classes. The macrozooplankton (Copepoda, Cladocera) was more abundant offshore, whereas microzooplankton (Rotifera and nauplii) predominated nearshore. These horizontal distribution patterns were related to small increases in temperature and phytoplankton biomass, and higher concentrations of fish in the littoral zone. Although limited to a short temporal scale, our study indicated that zooplankton spatial distribution in Lake Kinneret during the period of thermal stratification was related to physicochemical, food and predation factors, manifested differently along the vertical and nearshore–offshore gradients.  相似文献
