Data was collected on current age, age at menarche, marriage age, maternal age at 1st birth, age at the birth of last child, age at menopause, total number of conceptions, live births, stillbirths, abortions, dead children and living children for a sample of 150 Gunjar women of Punjab, India, during September and October 1977 to study their reproductive life. The women ranged in age from 45-55 years. The mean age at menarche was 14.90 years for the sample. The median age at menopause was 46.20 years. The mean age at marriage of the present sample was 12.56+-2.50 years; the mean age of the mother at the birth of her 1st child was 16.85 years; and the mean age at the birth of the last child was 38.68 years. The average number of conceptions was 7.2; the average number of live births of these 150 women was 6.90. The fertility of this population was natural as they were not using any family planning method.  相似文献

A great number of studies have shown that features linked to immediate fertility explain a large part of the variance in female attractiveness. This is consistent with an evolutionary perspective, as men are expected to prefer females at the age at which fertility peaks (at least for short‐term relationships) in order to increase their reproductive success. However, for long‐term relationships, a high residual reproductive value (the expected future reproductive output, linked to age at menopause) becomes relevant as well. In that case, young age and late menopause are expected to be preferred by men. However, the extent to which facial features provide cues to the likely age at menopause has never been investigated so far. Here, we show that expected age at menopause is linked to facial attractiveness of young women. As age at menopause is heritable, we used the mother's age at menopause as a proxy for her daughter's expected age of menopause. We found that men judged faces of women with a later expected age at menopause as more attractive than those of women with an earlier expected age at menopause. This result holds when age, cues of immediate fertility and facial ageing were controlled for. Additionally, we found that the expected age at menopause was not correlated with any of the other variables considered (including immediate fertility cues and facial ageing). Our results show the existence of a new correlate of women's facial attractiveness, expected age at menopause, which is independent of immediate fertility cues and facial ageing.  相似文献

We examine whether age at menarche affects age at first marriage or first birth using two samples of U.S. women. Data are drawn from the Tremin Trust, a longitudinal study of menstrual cycles that recruited white women who were students at the University of Minnesota and from a survey of a nationally representative sample of white women born between 1900 and 1910. Regression models with cubic splines were used to analyze the relationship between age at menarche and age at first marriage. Cox proportional hazard models were used to examine the effect of age at menarche on the interval between marriage and first birth. Unlike earlier work, we found that once secular trends in both age at marriage and age at menarche were taken into account, there was no evidence that age at menarche affects either age at marriage or the timing of first births in these U.S. women.  相似文献

Recently, few studies regarding the changes in BMI with age have been reported. In the present study, the wavelet interpolation method (WIM) was applied to the changes in BMI with age from the first grade of elementary school until the second year of high school in Korean girls, and the relationship between age at the maximum peak velocity (MPV) of BMI and age at menarche was confirmed by determining the age at MPV of BMI. Age at menarche and activity status were obtained from questionnaires given to 263 second grade high school girls in the Pusan area of South Korea. Moreover, longitudinal growth data on height and weight from the first grade of elementary school until the second year of high school (from 1997 to 2008) were obtained from health examination records. BMI was calculated from height and weight values from the first grade of elementary school until the second year of high school, and wavelet interpolation was applied to the distances of BMI in each grade. The change curve of BMI with age was determined by wavelet interpolation, and the age at MPV of BMI was determined from the changes in the velocity curve with age as the differentiation curve. Age at MPV of BMI was found to be 12.76 +/- 1.6 years, and age at menarche to be 12.34 +/- 1.1 years. The interval in age at the two times was -0.42 +/- 1.6 years, and a significant difference was seen between age at menarche and age at MPV of BMI. The reason that the age at menarche was a little earlier than the age at MPV of BMI is hypothesized to be abnormal melatonin levels influenced by lack of sleep in Korean school girls. However, it is proposed that the age at MPV of BMI is valid as the critical period for the age at menarche.  相似文献

The concentrations of immunoglobulins and protein in piglet feces at one day to ten weeks of age were assayed by the single radial immunodiffusion and by the Lowry method, respectively. The concentrations of IgG, IgA, IgM and total immunoglobulin were found to be significantly higher at one day and two days of age than those at one week to ten weeks of age. The concentrations of IgA, IgM and total immunoglobulin at two days of age were the highest and those at one day of age were the next highest. However, in case of IgG, there seemed to be no such difference in concentrations. There was almost no significant difference in concentrations of IgG, IgA and total immunoglobulin in feces at one week to ten weeks of age. On the other hand, the concentration of IgM at eight weeks of age seemed to be the least from one day to ten weeks of age. The concentration of protein at two days of age was the highest and that at one day of age was the next highest. Those at one week to three weeks of age were the least among those at one day to ten weeks of age.  相似文献

 Haploid megagametophytes from a full-sib cross of Pinus radiata were used to construct a genetic linkage map for radiata pine based on random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. The map, which was made from 222 markers, was used to carry out a QTL analysis of growth using measurements made on seedlings from which these megagametophytes were collected at an early germination stage. Trends in the expression of QTLs for stem diameter, volume and height were compared using measurements made at 5 months of age, and at 1, 2 and 3 years of age. None of the observed trends showed complete stability, i.e. none of the putative QTL positions detected at any one age was strongly expressed at all of the four stages of measurement. However, 45% of the trends showed partial stability, i.e. putative QTLs significant at one age were also detected at a subsequent age. Trends in QTL expression with age followed one of three patterns: (1) putative QTLs at some locations showed a gradual linear increase in influence from 5 months of age and were highest at 3 years of age; (2) QTLs detected at 5 months of age gradually became less significant with age; and (3) some putative QTLs showed a curvilinear increase in effect from 5 months of age, reaching their peak expression at 1 to 2 years, and sometimes were still detected at 3 years of age. Size at age and age at maturity are important life history traits, affecting individual fitness and population demography. In salmon and other organisms, size and growth rate are commonly considered cues for maturation and thus age at maturity may or may not evolve independently of these features. Recent concerns surrounding the potential phenotypic and demographic responses of populations facing anthropogenic disturbances, such as climate change and harvest, place a premium on understanding the evolutionary genetic basis for evolution in size at age and age at maturity. In this study, we present the findings from a set of common-garden rearing experiments that empirically assess the heritable basis of phenotypic divergence in size at age and age at maturity in Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) populations introduced to New Zealand. We found consistent evidence of heritable differences among populations in both size at age and age at maturity, often corresponding to patterns observed in the wild. Populations diverged in size and growth profiles, even when accounting for eventual age at maturation. By contrast, most, but not all, cases of divergence in age at maturity were driven by the differences in size or growth rate rather than differences in the threshold relationship linking growth rate and probability of maturation. These findings help us understand how life histories may evolve through trait interactions in populations exposed to natural and anthropogenic disturbances, and how we might best detect such evolution.  相似文献

Abstract

This study examines the social and biological determinants of age at first marriage in two townships in northern Taiwan, one very rural and traditional and the other urban and modernized. For a sample of 5,707 once‐married women a path analysis was performed in which age at first marriage was considered a function of age, educational attainment, urban origin, premarital labor‐force participation, and age at menarche. Age at menarche, with a positive effect on the dependent variable, was the most important direct cause of age at first marriage. Although exogenous variables associated with modernization (urban origin, educational attainment and younger age) had a positive direct effect on age at first marriage, they also had a negative indirect effect on age at first marriage through their negative direct effect on age at menarche.  相似文献

It is of recent interest in reproductive health research to investigate the validity of a marker event for the onset of menopausal transition and to estimate age at menopause using age at the marker event. We propose a varying-coefficient Cox model to investigate the association between age at a marker event, defined as a specific bleeding pattern change, and age at menopause, where both events are subject to censoring and their association varies with age at the marker event. Estimation proceeds using the regression spline method. The proposed method is applied to the Tremin Trust data to evaluate the association between age at onset of the 60-day menstrual cycle and age at menopause. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using a simulation study.  相似文献

The relationships between age and size at reproduction and lifetime reproductive output of male Japanese fluvial sculpin Cottus pollux were estimated by a mark-recapture study. Although all males were physiologically capable of breeding at age 2 years, age at first successful reproduction varied amongst individuals. Males with delayed reproduction had lower net reproductive rate than males that bred at age 2 years on average suggesting that age at first reproduction was a conditional strategy. Males that delayed reproduction were significantly smaller at age 1 and 2 years than males that bred at age 2 years. Despite no significant difference in body size of hatched yolk-sac larvae between the early and late phase of the breeding season, by May of the first year of life, progeny from nests in the early phase had hatched earlier and were larger than those from the nests in the late phase. The results suggested an important effect of timing of reproduction of parents on the growth and subsequent age at first reproduction of their progeny.  相似文献

Stature and body weight data of 100 boys and 100 girls from 7 to 17 years of age in Shimodate City who were born during World War II were longitudinally analyzed. The children were significantly smaller and lighter throughout their growth period than those born 11 years after the end of the war. The correlation coefficient between statures at each age and at age 17 showed a gradual increase with increasing age, while that between statures at each age and at age 7 decreased with age. However, a drop in the correlation coefficient was found during puberty, at age 11 for girls and at age 13 for boys. Comparing the normalized distance from mean values of stature and body weight at age 7, at puberty, and at age 17, only 51% of the children continued to be in the same relative position for both height and weight, 6% of boys and 4% of girls showing a decreasing pattern for both and 4% of boys and 7% of girls showing an increasing pattern for both. Thus, about 60% of the children of either sex presented parallel stature and body weight growth patterns for ages from 7 to 17.  相似文献

Hyperlipidemic rats were examined histopathologically at 10, 14, 18 and 22 weeks of age for evaluation of early bone lesions in renal secondary hyperparathyroidism. Serum chemistry revealed that the mean levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid were greater than the respective control levels at 10 weeks of age, and that they increased with age. The mean levels of urea nitrogen, creatinine, inorganic phosphorus and calcium were also greater than the respective control levels at and after 14 weeks of age. Grossly, the kidney showed enlargement with an irregular surface and the parathyroid gland was swollen at and after 14 weeks of age. Histologically, the bone showed proliferation and hypertrophy of osteoblasts, an increase in osteoid seams, and an increase in and irregularity of the cement lines. These changes were first seen at 14 weeks of age, and became more severe with age. In addition, osteoclasts were increased at and after 18 weeks of age, and the parathyroid gland was enlarged at and after 14 weeks of age. On the other hand, segmental glomerular sclerosis was detected at 10 weeks of age, and became more severe with increasing age.  相似文献

Comparisons of age at menopause are made difficult by the different methodologies applied across populations. This study extended an opportunity to apply different methodologies to the same data to draw some preliminary conclusions about age at menopause in Puebla, Mexico. Among 755 women aged 28 to 70 interviewed in the capital city of Puebla, Mexico, 447 (59.6%) were naturally or surgically postmenopausal. Mean recalled age at natural menopause in Puebla (46.7 years) appears to be similar to mean recalled age at menopause in Mexico City (46.5 years), suggesting that age at menopause is similar in urban Mexican populations. However, median age at menopause computed by probit analysis was later in the city of Puebla (49.6 years) compared to the median age computed by the same method in the capital city of León, Guanajuato, Mexico (48.2 years). Median age at menopause computed by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis suggests that age at menopause in Puebla (50.0 years) is older still, and close to that of the United States (51.1 years). The differences in median ages at menopause in Puebla are solely due to methodological choices and highlight the difficulty inherent in making inferences across studies of age at menopause between biological and/or cultural groups. Factors associated with age at menopause offer another avenue for comparing and understanding variation in this basic biological process. In Puebla, smoking, low levels of education, and nulliparity are associated with an earlier age at menopause.  相似文献

The Tamang women tea-labouren of Jalpaiguri district show no significant difference in age at menopause among their three «migration status» groups, viz., MO, M1 and M2+. The mean age at menopause is 47.3±4.26 and the median age is 47.68 years. A significant difference occurs between the observed mean age at menopause and 45 years, which is generally taken to be the menopausal age by convention. These Tamang women seem to be similar to other hill women in respect of age at menopause.  相似文献

In the present cross-sectional study of the Chuvashian rural population, we examined the secular trends of age at menarche, the age at menopause, the reproductive period, and the age of the first marriage of Chuvashian women. The cohort included 745 women aged 18–90 years; age at menarche (N = 653) ranging from 10 to 24 years (mean 15.42 ± 2.11). Data regarding menopausal age was obtained from 316 women born between 1920 and 1950 (mean 48.5 ± 4.6). Statistical analyses included the maximum likelihood estimation and a Whiskers plot. Women born during the second through the fourth decade of the 20th century showed increasing mean values of age at menarche from 15.4 (second decade) up to 16.5 (fourth decade) and after that a decrease of the mean values to 14.0 (ninth decade). The mean values of menopausal age increased from 47.0 (women born from 1920 to 1925) to 49.3 (born from 1945 to 1950). Age at first marriage showed a trend of decreasing age. Our study demonstrated secular trends of age at menarche in Chuvashian women who had matured after World War II and also confirmed secular trends of increased age at menopause and the duration of the reproductive period. Women, whose maturation was during or immediately after World War II, showed a higher age at menarche and a higher dispersion of age at menopause.  相似文献

Aims

To measure the degree and direction of errors in recall of age at first sex.

Method

Participants were initially recruited in 1994–1995 (Wave I) with 3 subsequent follow-ups in: 1996 (Wave II); 2001– 2002 (Wave III); and 2007–2008 (Wave IV). Participants'' individual errors in recall of their age at first sex at Wave IV were estimated by the paired difference between responses given for age at first sex in Wave I and Wave IV (recalled age at first sex obtained at Wave IV minus the age at first sex obtained at Wave I).

Results

The mean of the recall-estimation of age at first sex at Wave IV was found to be slightly increased comparing to the age at first sex at Wave I (less than 1 year). The errors in the recalled age at first sex tended to increase in participants who had their first sex younger or older than the average, and the recalled age at first sex tended to bias towards the mean (i.e. participants who had first sex younger than the average were more likely to recall an age at first sex that was older than the age, and vice versa).

Conclusions

In this U.S. population-based sample, the average recall error for age at first sex was small. However, the accuracy of recalled information varied significantly among subgroup populations.  相似文献

The treatment of female C57BL/6 x DS-F1 mice with 3'-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene (3'-Me-DAB) at 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 days of age resulted in the development of hepatocellular adenomatous nodules after 10 months of age. Ovariectomy in these mice at 1 month of age hastened the development of adenomatous nodules, which then first appeared at 8 months of age. The incidence of adenomatous nodules in females ovariectomized at the age of 1 month was much higher than that in intact females of the same age. These results showed that the ovaries exerted a suppressive effect on the development of adenomatous nodules. To determine the time from which the ovaries exert this suppressive effect, females were ovariectomized at 4, 6, 8, and 10 months of age, and the incidences of adenomatous nodules were compared at 10 and 12 months of age. Delayed ovariectomy after 8 months of age did decrease the incidence of adenomatous nodules at 10 and 12 months of age, but ovariectomy after 4 and 6 months of age did not. When the incidence of adenomatous nodules in females ovariectomized at 10 months of age was examined over the subsequent 6 months, it became significantly higher after 14 months of age compared with that in intact females. The results show that the ovariectomy has the promoting effect on the development of adenomatous nodules in the liver induced by 3'-Me-DAB after 6 months of age.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to review published studies on the variability of age at menarche and age at menopause throughout the world, and to identify the main causes for age variation in the timing of these events. We first present a summary table including mean (or median) values of the age at menarche in 67 countries, and of the age at menopause in 26 countries. General linear models showed that mean age at menarche was strongly linked to the mean female life expectancy, suggesting that one or several variables responsible for inequalities in longevity similarly influenced the onset of menarche. A closer examination of the data revealed that among several variables reflecting living conditions, the factors best explaining the variation in age at menarche were adult illiteracy rate and vegetable calorie consumption. Because adult illiteracy rate has some correlation with the age at which children are involved in physical activities that can be detrimental in terms of energy expenditure, our results suggest that age at menarche reflects more a trend in energy balance than merely nutritional status. In addition, we found the main determinant of age at menopause to be the mean fertility. This study thus suggests that, on a large scale, age at menarche is mainly determined by extrinsic factors such as living conditions, while age at menopause seems to be mainly influenced by intrinsic factors such as the reproductive history of individuals. Finally, these findings suggest that human patterns cannot be addressed solely by traditional, small-scale investigations on single populations. Rather, complementary research on a larger scale, such as this study, may be more appropriate in defining some interesting applications to the practical problems of human ecology.  相似文献

Stimulation by naloxone, an opioid antagonist, of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion was examined in spring-born crossbred ram lambs raised under natural photoperiod. Vehicle (n = 6) or 1 mg naloxone/kg vehicle (n = 6) was injected (i.m.) 3 times at 2-h intervals at 5, 10 and 15 weeks of age and 4 times at 2-h intervals at 20, 25, 30 and 35 weeks of age. Blood samples were taken every 12 min for 6 h at 5, 10 and 15 weeks of age and for 8 h at 20, 25, 30 and 35 weeks of age. Naloxone had no effect on age at sexual maturity (controls 239 +/- 23 days; naloxone 232 +/- 33 days). The only significant (P less than 0.05) effect of naloxone on FSH was a greater pulse amplitude in 10-week-old treated lambs than in control lambs. Naloxone treatment resulted in greater LH pulse amplitude at 5 and 10 weeks of age (P less than 0.05), lower basal serum concentration of LH at 10 weeks of age (P less than 0.05), greater LH pulse frequency at 25 weeks of age (P less than 0.05), and greater mean serum concentrations of LH, basal LH and LH pulse amplitude at 35 weeks of age (P less than 0.01) than in the controls. In both groups of lambs, mean and basal FSH, and LH and FSH pulse amplitude were highest at 5 weeks of age and fell with age.
