This report examines the extent to which dream recall involves the 3 R's (reading, writing, and arithmetic). Two separate studies were done. In the first study, two scorers rated, on a blind basis, a total of 456 written dream reports, available from five previous studies. There was perfect agreement between the two scorers. They agreed that there were no instances of reading, no instances of writing, and one instance of probable calculating in the 456 dreams. The second study was a questionnaire survey. Complete responses were obtained from 240 frequent dreamers (who reported remembering a mean of seven dreams per week). The study examined in two ways the frequency of the 3 R's in their recalled dreams. First, in answer to direct questions as to how frequently they dreamt about each activity, roughly 90% of the respondents reported that they never or hardly ever dreamt about each of four activities: reading, writing, typing, and calculating. In answers to other questions, this group reported spending a mean of six hours per day engaged in these activities. Second, responses as to the relative prominence of six activities (walking, writing, talking with friends, reading, sexual activity, typing) in dreaming versus waking produced two clear groupings of activities. Walking, talking with friends, and sexual activity were each rated almost as prominent in dreaming as in waking whereas the second group consisting of writing, reading, and typing were rated as far more prominent in waking than in dreaming. The two activity groups differed at p < .0001. Thus, the 3 R's appear to occur very infrequently in dreams. These findings are placed in a theoretical frame which suggests that dreaming (compared to waking) deals very little with serial activities characterized by input—rapid-processing—output in which the neural nets function in a feed-forward mode. Rather, dreaming may be characterized by relatively broad or loose connection making in which the nets function more in an autoassociative mode.  相似文献

According to the boundary concept of Hartmann (1991), the occurence of nightmares was repeatedly shown to be correlated to thin personal boundaries. The present study investigated the relationship between boundary thinness and emotional, cognitive, and behavioral consequences of nightmares in frequent nightmare sufferers. Occurence of nightmares and their respective consequences were recorded daily during a 4-week period by diaries and questionnaires. Confirming previous results, frequent nightmare sufferers had significantly thinner personal boundaries than occasional nightmare sufferers, and nightmare frequency was positively correlated to boundary thinness. In frequent nightmare sufferers, the emotional and cognitive consequences of a nightmare as well as its possible explanations were correlated to boundary thinness; mainly the personal total score and the Boundary Questionnaire scales sleep/wake/dreams, thoughts/feelings/mood and sensitivity. The results indicate that although nightmare frequency is positively correlated to thin personal boundaries, only particular aspects of the concept of personal boundaries are correlated to emotional and cognitive consequences of the nightmares.  相似文献

This paper describes a syndrome of psychological and physical symptoms involving body paralysis and hallucinations traditionally interpreted in Newfoundland as an attack of Old Hag. Folk theories of cause and treatment are outlined based on 13 months of field research in a community on the northeast coast of Newfoundland. Data derived from the responses of 69 adults to the Cornell Medical Index (CMI) indicate that there are no significant differences in psychological or physical illness complaints between adults who have experienced the Old Hag and adults who have not had this experience. The striking similarity between the Old Hag experience and a clinical condition called sleep paralysis is analyzed, and the implications of viewing the Old Hag as sleep paralysis are discussed within the context of current theoretical issues in transcultural psychiatry.  相似文献

From a screening questionnaire, 12 subjects indicating some prior knowledge of alpha training (but no actual biofeedback training experience) and 12 subjects lacking such prior knowledge were selected for two 30-minute feedback sessions, one providing an opportunity to enhance and the other to suppress EEG alpha. Written self-reports of experiential state were independently rated by two judges on a five-point scale (Walsh, 1974) according to the degree to which they approximated alleged alpha vs. nonalpha experiences. These self-reports indicated that only the subjects expressing prior knowledge were able to differentiate between the enhancement and suppression sessions. A second study explored whether knowledgeable subjects (presumably those with positive expectancies) could make a similar differentiation when their expectancies regarding the type of feedback they would receive were manipulated. Twenty subjects received enhancement and 20 others received suppression feedback for four 40-minute sessions. Within each of these groups, 10 subjects were led to believe they enhanced alpha, and 10 were told they suppressed alpha. Half the subjects, therefore, believed they were attempting to change alpha in a direction opposite that of their actual task. Both actual and expected direction of alpha change significantly affected self-reports in the expected direction. Seemingly, situational expectancy alone was not sufficient to account for the actual feedback effects in the knowledgeable subjects. It is not entirely clear whether the alpha-related experiences reported by these knowledgeable subjects were responses to internal (i.e., physiologic state) or subtle external cues.  相似文献

Discoveries in three distinct areas of dream research make it possible to suggest the outlines of a new neurocognitive theory of dreaming. The first relevant findings come from assessments of patients with brain injuries, which show that lesions in different areas have differential effects on dreaming and thereby imply the contours of the neural network necessary for dreaming. The second set of results comes from work with children ages 3–15 in the sleep laboratory, which reveals that only 20–30% of REM period awakenings lead to dream reports up to age 9 and that the dreams of children under age 5 are bland and static in content. The third set of findings comes from a rigorous system of content analysis, which demonstrates the repetitive nature of much dream content and that dream content in general is continuous with waking conceptions and emotional preoccupations. Based on these findings, dreaming is best understood as a developmental cognitive achievement that depends upon the maturation and maintenance of a specific network of forebrain structures. The output of this neural network for dreaming is guided by a continuity principle linked to current personal concerns on the one hand and a repetition principle rooted in past emotional preoccupations on the other.  相似文献

The amyloid -peptide (A) is a major component of insoluble amyloid deposits in Alzheimers disease, and the ability of the -peptide to exist in different conformations is dependent on residues 1–28 [-(1–28)]. However, different from humans, no A amyloid deposition has been found in aged rats brains. Studying the three-dimensional solution structure of rat A-(1–28) and the binding circumstance of Zn2+ is beneficial to a clear understanding of the potential role of Zn2+ in Alzheimer-associated neuropathogenesis and to suggest why there is no amyloid deposition in aged rats brains. Here we used nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to determine the solution structure of rat A-(1–28) and the binding constant of Zn2+ to rat A-(1–28). Our results suggest that (1) the three-dimensional solution structure of rat A-(1–28) is more stable than that of human A-(1–28) in DMSO-d6 and that a helical region from Glu16 to Val24 exists in the rat A-(1–28); (2) the affinity of Zn2+ for rat A-(1–28) is lower than that for human A-(1–28) and the NMR data suggest that Arg13, His6, and His14 residues provide the primary binding sites for Zn2+; and (3) the proper binding of Zn2+ to rat A-(1–28) can induce the peptide to change to a more stable conformation.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00775-004-0556-xAbbreviations A amyloid -peptide - AD Alzheimers disease - hA-(1–28) human A-(1–28) - rA-(1-28) rat A-(1–28) - REM restrained energy minimization  相似文献

This essay seeks to extend current anthropological theorizing on emotion. Although anthropologists have convincingly established the specifically cultural status of emotion, recognition also of state (including sociopolitical institutions of nation-states) constructions of affect has been slow in coming. The present essay seeks to expand the emerging scholarly discourse on the emotions by examining the nexus among the role of the state in constructing a political ethos, the personal emotions of those who dwell in that ethos, and the mental health consequences for refugees. This analysis is intended as a bridge between analyses of the state construction of affect, on the one hand, and the phenomenology of those affects, on the other. To illustrate, I examine the state construction of affect and its traces in the narrative and clinical presentations of Salvadoran refugees in North America. The saliency of fear and anxiety among a group of psychiatric out-patients is framed by bodily experience, knowledge of illness, and the ethnopsychology of emotion within the context of chronic political violence and poverty. Distinctions between terror and torture, distress and disease are proposed as essential to an account of refugee experience. Future directions for the study of the state construction of affect are suggested.  相似文献

There is now abundant evidence that the structure of the mammalian visual cortex is not innately determined but can be altered by visual experiences during a certain period at an early age. A model based on the evidence is proposed that will explain some aspects of the developmental process in the visual cortex. The model self-organizingly forms a simple cell which responds to bars and edges of a certains orientation and retinal position. The total system of the model corresponds to a hyper column which contains a complete cycle of orientational selectiviy. The model has the following three original points. i) A hyper column is finally formed in the model. ii) Most of the cells do not have orientation selectivity in the initial state. iii) It is hypothesized that the orientation continuity of the hyper column is caused by similar orientations of successive input stimuli. Dream interpretative efforts appear unconstrained by methodological standards. An examination of the re-interpretations of Freud's dream of Irma's Injection, the dream specimen of psychoanalysis, illustrates the undisciplined nature of dream interpretation. Reading in from presumed day residues or infantile experiences rather than out from the dream report per se lies at the heart of the problem. The failure to spell out inferences, to link inferences to the dream text, to explain and maintain the relationships in the dream report, and to offer a substitute text for the entire dream text all contribute to the inadequacies of dream interpreatation.  相似文献

We have developed a new method for the large scale preparation of pyridylaminated (PA-) oligosaccharides from glycoproteins. Phenol/chloroform extration was adapted for the removal of protein and excess 2-aminopyridine, improving the efficiency of preparation. From a 2.5 g sample of human apo-transferrin, 25–30 mol of agalacto biantennary PA-oligosaccharide could be obtained. Dreamless sleep, as subjective experience, is mentioned primarily within Hindu and Buddhist contexts. In the Upanishads, dreamless sleep is presented for the most part as objectless consciousness. Tibetan Buddhists speak of dreamless sleep in terms of a progression of visual experiences consisting of darkness and light. Contemporary discussions of dreaming, unless concerned with Eastern religion or philosophy, do not tend to mention dreamless sleep. For some writers today, dreaming includes all subjective experience during sleep, leaving no room for an experience of dreamless sleep. Some writers describe dreaming as a simulation of waking life. Since not all experience during sleep is simulation, this concept allows for experiences during sleep that may be understood to be other than dreaming. The writer finds it useful to consider simulation as the determining characteristic of dreaming and finds certain other sleep experiences then that are best considered to be dreamless.  相似文献

The present study demonstrates a procedure for the rapid development of a high number of somatic embryos from embryogenic suspension culture. This method might be efficient for mass propagation of Phnix dactylifera L. Embryogenic callus placed in liquid medium with 10–5M ABA yielded an average 72 embryos per 100ml of culture medium within 2months, while those placed on solid medium yielded an average of 33, 20 and 16 embryos per 100ml of culture medium respectively for 10–7, 10–6 and 10–5 M ABA after 4months. The combination of 2,4-DIchlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) (4.5×10–7M), glutamine (6.7×10–4M), and ABA (10–5M) (L8 liquid medium) showed a beneficial effect on somatic embryos production compared to 2,4-D and glutamine alone, while this combination significantly (p<0.05) increased the accumulation of storage proteins (144 and 138mgg–1 DW respectively for Jihel and Bousthami noir cultivars) in somatic embryos. The somatic embryos which underwent maturation on medium containing only 4.5×10–7M 2,4-D and 10–5M ABA (L6 liquid medium) accumulated more sugars (292 and 265mgg–1 DW respectively for Jihel and Bousthami noir) than those matured on any other liquid medium. Histological studies revealed that somatic embryos (developed in L6 and L8 liquid media) accumulated less reserve compounds (proteins and sugars) than zygotic embryos. The addition of activated charcoal (0.25 and 0.5gl–1) and phytagel® (2.5gl–1) to the germination medium may be useful for enhancing the germination of Phnix dactyliferasomatic embryos.  相似文献

The major proteins of baboon milk were identified as -lactoglobulin (LG), -lactalbumin (LA), lysozyme, lactoferrin, casein, and albumin by immobiline isoelectric focusing, SDS-PAGE, immunoblotting of gels with rabbit antisera to human LA, lysozyme, and albumin and bovine LG and casein, and N-terminal sequencing of proteins blotted from gels. The first 30 N-terminal residues of baboon LG are identical to those of macaque (Macaca fasicularis) LG except for a (D/N) polymorphism at residue 2. The complete cDNA sequence and derived amino acid composition of LG were elucidated using RT-PCR amplification of poly(A)+ mRNA purified from lactating mammary gland. Baboon LG consists of 168 amino acid residues (Mr 20,750) and is the longest LG identified to date. LG and LA polymorphisms with three (A, B, and C) and two (A and B) variants, respectively, were detected by immobiline IEF, pH 4–6, of individual baboon milk samples at varying stages of lactation.  相似文献

Two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis of immunoprecipitated HLA-DR antigens from eight homozygous typing cells (HTC) expressing the HLA-DRw8 specificity revealed a clustering of polymorphic chain patterns into distinct electrophoretic variants. The variant patterns correlate with three discrete HLA-D clusters that are defined in the mixed leukocyte culture reaction (MLR) using DRw8-positive HTC. These HLA-D clusters have been provisionally designated Dw8.1, detected primarily in Caucasoids, Dw8.2, detected primarily in American Indians, and Dw8.3, detected predominantly in Orientals. All three HLA-Dw8.1 cell lines express a single DR-locus product as defined by immunoprecipitation with a DR-specific monoclonal antibody, P4.1. This DR chain is identical among the Dw8.1 cell lines and different from the DR chains of the Dw8.2 and Dw8.3 cell lines. Two separate Dw8.2 HTC express a shared DR chain that is slightly more basic than the 8.1 DR molecule; interestingly, one of these lines also expresses an additional DR-like chain not found in the other cells. Thus, the two lines defining the Dw8.2 cluster share one distinct class 11 molecule, but differ in another and therefore are not biochemically HLA-identical. Cells from the Dw8.3 cluster are likewise distinct from all other Dw8 clusters. One additional DRw8-positive HTC has been analyzed and found to be distinct from the Dw8.1, 8.2 and 8.3 clusters by both MLR and 2D gels. lmmunoprecipitates using monoclonal antibody 1B5 [anti-DR and anti-DQ(DS)] identify additional polymorphic class II variants among the cell lines tested. These data indicate that HLA-DRw8 is a public serologic specificity present on class II molecules expressed on multiple distinct haplotypes. These haplotypes differ from each other in expression of polymorphic class II molecules encoded by at least two HLA loci. They also differ in HLA-D, even though they all type as HLA-DRw8 homozygous. In Dw8.2, variation in expressed chains is not reflected in variation in HLA-D, indicating that MLR, as well as serologic typing, does not detect the full degree of allelic polymorphism within HLA.  相似文献

Although research has investigated the feasibility of establishing classically conditioned physiological responses during sleep, very few experimental studies have considered whether classically conditioned cognitive associations are possible. Since dreams have previously been described as a state of hyper-association, an experiment involving classical conditioning of the human salivary response and associated dream content was conducted. During wakefulness, repeated pairings of a conditioned stimulus (CS; a red light) with an unconditioned stimulus (UCS; citrus juice) yielded a conditioned autonomic response (CR; salivation) on presentation of the CS alone. After exposure to the CS during REM sleep, salivary excretion rates measured upon awakening were significantly higher than measures taken from baseline REM awakenings. However, no CR-related dreams were reported by the participants. This result could be interpreted as evidence that participants in this experiment did not experience higher-order memory associations to the external stimuli presented during REM. Alternatively, the lack of CR-related dreams could be explained by previous findings that the autonomic nervous system often works independently of higher-order cognitive activity. Therefore, if an autonomic association is formed, this does not necessarily imply a cognitive one.  相似文献

The dysfunctional consequences of the Cartesian dichotomy have been enhanced by the power of biomedical technology. Technical virtuosity reifies the mechanical model and widens the gap between what patients seek and doctors provide.Patients suffer illnesses; doctors diagnose and treat diseases. Illnesses are experiences of discontinuities in states of being and perceived role performances. Diseases, in the scientific paradigm of modern medicine, are abnormalities in the function and/or structure of body organs and systems. Traditional healers also redefine illness as disease: because they share symbols and metaphors consonant with lay beliefs, their healing rituals are more responsive to the psychosocial context of illness.Psychiatric disorders offer an illuminating perspective on the basic medical dilemma. The paradigms for psychiatric practice include multiple and ostensibly contradictory models: organic, psychodynamic, behavioural and social. This melange of concepts stems from the fact that the fundamental manifestations of psychosis are disordered behaviours. The psychotic patient remains a person; his self-concept and relationships with others are central to the therapeutic encounter, whatever pharmacological adjuncts are employed.The same truths hold for all patients. The social matrix determines when and how the patient seeks what kind of help, his compliance with the recommended regimen and, to a significant extent, the functional outcome. When physicians dismiss illness because ascertainable disease is absent, they fail to meet their socially assigned responsibility. Summary The effect of assortative mating on the genetic correlation between traits X and Y is considered. Assortation on trait X changes the magnitude of the genetic correlation but not its sign. There are two situations depending on the signs of the correlation between mates () and of the random mating genetic correlation (): 1) if sign () = sign (), then >, where is the genetic correlation at equilibrium after continued assortation, and 2) if sign () = sign (), then < . However, negative assortative mating is virtually powerless to alter the magnitude of the genetic correlation. The consequences of a mixed assortation model, e.g., high milk production females mated to fast growing males and lesser productive females mated to slower growing sires, were also studied. Mixed positive assortation always increases the genetic correlation, but negative assortation decreases it. The implications of assortative mating on correlated responses to selection and on the equilibrium covariances between relatives for pairs of traits are discussed.  相似文献

Hybridizations ofElymus nutans andE. jacquemontii were carried out with one species ofPseudoroegneria (S genome), and 20Elymus species, each containing either of the SH, SY, SYH, or SYW genomes. Chromosome configurations were analysed at metaphase I of the two target taxa and their interspecific hybrids. It is concluded that (i)E. nutans is an allohexaploid containing the SYH genomes, andE. jacquemontii is an allotetraploid having the SY genomes; (ii) the genomic affinity is associated with the geographic distance between the species studied; (iii) minor genomic structural rearrangements have occurred within the hexaploid taxon ofE. nutans.  相似文献

Metal toxicity from sources such as orthopaedic implants was investigated in terms of immune system hyper-reactivity to metal implant alloy degradation products. Lymphocyte response to serum protein complexed with metal from implant alloy degradation was investigated in this in vitro study using primary human lymphocytes from healthy volunteers (n = 10). Cobalt chromium molybdenum alloy (CoCrMo, ASTM F75) and titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V, ASTM F136) beads (70 m) were incubated in agitated human serum at 37 degrees Celsius to simulate naturally occurring metal implant alloy degradation processes. Particulate free serum samples, which were incubated with metal, were then separated into molecular weight based fractions. The amounts of soluble Cr and Ti within each serum fraction were measured and correlated with lymphocyte proliferation response to the individual serum fractions. Lymphocytes from each subject were cultured with 11 autologous molecular weight based serum fractions either with or without added metal. Two molecular weight ranges of human serum proteins were associated with the binding of Cr and Ti from CoCrMo and Ti implant alloy degradation (at < 30 and 180–330 kDa). High molecular weight serum proteins ( 180 kDa) demonstrated greater lymphocyte reactivity when complexed with metal released from CoCrMo alloy and Ti alloy than with low (5–30 kDa) and midrange (30–77 kDa) serum proteins. When the amount of lymphocyte stimulation was normalized to both the moles of metal and the moles of protein within each fraction (MetalProtein Complex Reactivity Index, MPCRI), Cr from CoCrMo alloy degradation demonstrated approximately 10 fold greater reactivity than Ti in the higher molecular weight serum proteins ( 180–250 kDa). This in vitro study demonstrated a lymphocyte proliferative response to both CoCrMo and Ti alloy metalloprotein degradation products. This response was greatest when the metals were complexed with high molecular weight proteins, and with metalprotein complexes formed from CoCrMo alloy degradation.  相似文献

Of 147 microorganisms isolated from a loamy sand, 71 showed good growth with lindane (-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane) and produced chloride in an aqueous medium. Thirteen soil microorganisms were selected to study the utilization of lindane. Lindane was metabolized by the microbes to -2,3,4,5,6-pentachloro-1-cyclohexene (-PCCH), -3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1-cyclohexene (-TCCH), -3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1-cyclohexene (-TCCH), -3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1-cyclohexene (-TCCH), and pentachlorobenzene (PCB). Cells of Pseudomonas sp. No. 62 grown on lindane simultaneously adapted to -PCCH, -TCCH, -TCCH, -TCCH, PCB, 1,2,3,4-tetrachlorobenzene (1,2,3,4-TCB) and 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene (1,2,4,5-TCB).
