Escape manoeuvres of schooling Clupea harengus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The escape behaviour of schooling herring startled by an artificial sound stimulus was observed by means of high speed video filming. Response latencies showed two distinct peaks, at 30 ms and c . 100 ms. Escape responses belonging to the two latency groups showed different turning rates during the first stage of the response, and showed different escape trajectories. We suggest that long latency escapes may be responses to startled neighbours or simply weak responses to the sound stimulus. In addition, the different contraction rates during the C-bend formation seen in the two latency groups may imply differences in the neuronal commands. The escape responses of herring were directed away from the stimulus more often than towards it (88% of the total). These away responses were more common in long latency responses, suggesting that the latter enable herring to be more accurate in discerning the direction of the threat. Startled fish contracting their body towards the stimulus (performing a towards response) appear to correct their escape course, since their escape trajectory distribution is non-uniformty distributed around 360° and directed away from the stimulus. We hypothesize that when herring are schooling, the ability of each fish to correct its trajectory following turns towards the stimulus is enhanced.  相似文献

Two groups each of approximately 100 Moenkhausia dichroua , a schooling characid, showed a long–lasting, constant–oriented swimming when placed in a light–centred circular channel. This apparatus consists of a 1–m diameter circular channel illuminated by either a central or a peripheral light system, so that the light angle is constant all around the channel. With the central light at a fixed angle, fish swam for several months in one direction and reversed direction at a certain date. When the light angle was increased by 10° every other day between 0° (horizontal) and 90° (vertical), swimming direction was reversed at a particular angle in each experiment. This response to artificial light suggests that this small schooling fish uses the sun as an orientation clue in its seasonal migrations.  相似文献

We studied the startle response of the African butterfly fish, Pantodon buchholzi (Osteoglossomorpha, Osteoglossoidea). It is an upward movement, mediated by abduction of the pectoral fins, and is elicited by mechanical and visual stimuli. Because this fish inhabits the first few centimeters beneath the water surface, its startle response results in an aerial excursion that may be described as ballistic-like, following a motion as defined by linear acceleration. We show that the aerial excursion is well-modeled by a parabola. On average, a fish jumps no more than twice its height and travels horizontally about five times its standard length. The fish may exhibit variable in-flight trunk and fin movements, but neither increases the travel distance in air following the initial in-water propulsive event. Similar vertical jumps also occur entirely within the water column suggesting that this motor behavior of Pantodon is a general escape behavior analogous to a Mauthner neuron-induced escape response. The variability in its posture in air and its direction of motion after reentering the water enhances this act of vertical flight as a step in this fish's escape behavior. The aerial aspect of its escape behavior is only a consequence of its position in the water column.  相似文献

The effects of surface type and slope on fish passage over artificial ramps were evaluated for two small diadromous fish species native to New Zealand: the redfin bully Gobiomorphus huttoni and adult and juvenile inanga Galaxias maculatus . Surfaces tested include smooth plastic, sand, gravel (limestone chips 5–20 mm), nylon brush and two plastic moulded cores of ground drainage products Cordrain® and Miradrain®. Slopes of 15° (1:3·7), 30° (1:1·7) and 45° (1:1) were assessed. Slope was the greatest factor influencing successful passage, with the lowest gradient tested (15°) providing the highest passage for both fish species. Most ramps at 45° only allowed the passage of redfin bullies, these fish being capable of 'climbing' the wetted margin of the ramps. Because of this climbing ability, redfin bullies were not as affected by the ramp surface, as inanga. Nevertheless, the smooth plastic surface, which resulted in the highest water velocities over the ramps, was un-passable by either species at slopes >15°. Gravel, the nylon brush and the two plastic moulds provided high passage rates for inanga at gradients of 15 and 30°. At a slope of 45°, Miradrain® was the only surface inanga could pass. Overall, Miradrain® produced the most successful passage for both inanga and redfin bullies, but to maximize passage, slope should not be >15° and a wetted margin is essential for climbing species.  相似文献

The ecologically efficient escape direction assumed by Gryllotalpa gryllotalpais learned by the larvae after they leave the maternal nest. Nonetheless, larvae hatched in the laboratory are innately capable of using the sun to maintain a set escape direction. The species can also modify the set point of its sun compass to conform to topographical changes encountered during its wanderings.  相似文献

Aims:  To determine the impact of natural sunlight in disinfecting water contaminated with cysts of Giardia duodenalis and Entamoeba histolytica/dispar using plastic containers.
Methods and Results:  Known quantities of Giardia duodenalis and Entamoeba histolytica/dispar cysts in sterile water were exposed to the sun. Containers were made of polyethylene terephthalate, eight painted black on one side, one not painted and another cut open at the top and the last was a high density polypropylene container. Viability testing was performed using vital and fluorescent dyes. The same assays were conducted under cloudy conditions. Thermal control tests were also performed using heat without ultra violet light from the sun. Results show that 99·9% of parasites was inactivated when water temperatures reached 56°C after sunlight exposure.
Conclusion:  Both solar radiation and heat produced by the sun have a synergistic effect in killing cysts of Giardia duodenalis and Entamoeba histolytica/dispar when temperatures rise above 50°C, with complete death at 56°C, using painted 2-l PET containers.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  Solar disinfection system using PET containers painted black on one side can be used to disinfect water against Giardia duodenalis and Entamoeba histolytica/dispar using natural sunlight.  相似文献

Hatchery reared Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar L.) parr were tagged with the standard I.C.E.S./I.C.N.A.F. salmon tag at water temperatures of 15°C and 6°C. They were then subjected to swimming trials in a tunnel respirometer. Following this treatment the 15°C fish developed necrotic infarcts around the tag insertions. Provided they did not become infected these lesions healed, but if the fish were retested 9 days later, the wound enlarged, became extremely inflamed, and the fish died soon after. This effect was not seen in 6°C fish.  相似文献

Zoogeography of the coral reef fishes of the Socotra Archipelago   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fish communities and habitats were studied at the Socotra archipelago (Gulf of Aden, ≈12°N 54°E). Extensive and unexpected hermatypic coral communities were recorded, at the centre of a 2200 km gap in knowledge of species and habitat distributions which coincides with a change from a western Indian Ocean coral reef fauna to an Arabian one. The fish assemblage associated with the Socotra archipelago corals is predominantly south Arabian. An east African influence, minimal on the mainland coasts of Arabia, is more evident here, and results in previously unrecorded sympatry between Arabian endemic species and their Indian Ocean sister taxa. A study of distributions of Chaetodontidae (butterflyfishes) in the north-western Indian Ocean reveals a number of distinct patterns, with a trend for species replacement along a track from the northern Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. A major feature of the reef fish zoogeography of the region is found to be a distinct south Arabian area, characterized by a 'pseudo-high latitude effect' which results from seasonal cold water upwelling along the Arabian sea coasts of Yemen and Oman and the Indian Ocean coast of Somalia. This south Arabian feature is consistent across a wide range of fish families. It is most pronounced in Oman and Yemen, and although it is the dominant influence at Socotra it is slightly 'diluted' here by the east African influence. The south Arabian area wholly or partly accounts for most of the major marine zoogeographic features around Arabia, and is the principal feature fragmenting Arabian coastal fish assemblages, and separating them from those of the wider Indo-west Pacific.  相似文献

Synopsis The risk to a prey individual in an encounter with a predator increases as the distance to protective cover increases. Prey should therefore initiate their flight to cover at longer distances from an approaching predator (i.e., sooner) and/or flee at greater velocities, as the distance to cover increases. These predictions were tested with an African cichlid fish, Melanochromis chipokae presented with a looming stimulus simulating an attacking predator. The fish varied their flight initiation distance as predicted, but there was no significant effect of distance-to-cover on escape velocity. Nevertheless, the cichlids appeared to choose a combination of flight initiation distance and escape velocity which ensured they reached cover with a constant temporal margin of safety.  相似文献

Seasonal and diel migration timing of wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts and adults were investigated annually (2001–2004) in the subarctic River Utsjoki, a tributary of the large River Teno (70° N), using underwater video monitoring. Submerged video cameras provided information on the exact timing and intensity of both migrations in a natural river channel, without disturbing the fish. In contrast to the mainly nocturnal migration pattern described from temperate rivers, the River Utsjoki smolts and adults migrated throughout the day. Smolts migrated most intensively during hours of rising (0300–0900 hours) and high sun (0900–1500 hours), while adults favoured the period of low sun (2100–0300 hours). Smolt migrations started in June and lasted on average 42 days. Adults usually ascended the site 2–3 weeks before the first descending smolts were observed and the adult migrations extended to the end of August. Seasonal synchrony was observed between smolt and adult migrations in years of slowly warming water, whereas in a year of exceptionally warm early summer (2002), smolts migrated earlier than adults. Thus, water temperature seemed to be an important environmental factor triggering the smolt migration, while the migration of adults was probably more fixed to a certain season. Weak positive correlations between fish counts and water temperature were observed, indicating that increasing water temperature may have promoted both smolt and adult migrations. The influence of discharge was negligible, although increasing discharge late in the season may have activated the remaining individuals in both groups.  相似文献

In short-horn sculpin Myoxocephalus scorpius , the power requirements for fast-start swimming and the length-specific velocity of the curvature wave travelling down the spine ( Û ) were not influenced significantly by acclimation to summer and winter conditions at test temperatures of 5 and 15° C. However, in-vivo and in-vitro muscle performance exhibited acclimation responses at 15° C. Seasonal acclimation altered the escape performance curves for power and Û significantly over a wider temperature range of 0·8–20° C. Û was significantly higher at 20° C in the summer- than winter-acclimation group. The acclimation of lower levels of physiological organization at 15° C may thus serve to extend the thermal limits for escape performance in summer acclimated fish.  相似文献

Aim  To examine, at a global scale, patterns in the direction in which climbing plants twine. We tested three hypotheses: (1) that twining direction is determined randomly; (2) that twining direction is determined by apices following the apparent movement of the sun across the sky; and (3) that twining direction is determined by the Coriolis effect.
Location  Seventeen sites spanning nine countries, both hemispheres and 65° of latitude.
Methods  Twining direction was recorded for the first c . 100 stems encountered along transects through natural vegetation at each site.
Results  Ninety-two per cent of the 1485 twining stems we recorded grew in right-handed helices, i.e. they twined in an anticlockwise direction. This is significantly ( P < 0.001) different from random. The proportion of stems twining right-handedly (anticlockwise) was independent of both latitude ( P = 0.33) and hemisphere ( P = 0.63). These data are inconsistent with the idea that twining direction is determined by either the relative passage of the sun through the celestial sphere or by the Coriolis effect. Thus, we reject all three of our hypotheses.
Main conclusions  The predominance of right-handed helical growth in climbing plants cannot be explained by hypotheses attempting to link plant growth behaviour and global location. One alternative hypothesis for our findings is that the widespread phenomenon of anticlockwise twining arises as a function of microtubule orientation operating at a subcellular level.  相似文献

Diatoms, dinoflagellates, pelagiophytes, prymnesiophytes, and cyanobacteria are the only divisions of microalgae known to produce toxins. We now report toxin production by freshwater members of the genus Euglena. Fish mortalities (sheepshead minnows, catfish, striped bass, and tilapia) have been observed following exposure in the field to Euglena blooms and in the laboratory when exposed to unialgal isolates of two species of Euglena ( E. sanguinea Ehrenberg and E. granulata (Klebs) Lemm.). Three toxic fractions have been isolated from unialgal isolates of both species, and include both water soluble and lipophilic compounds having ichthyotoxic activity. The toxins are stable at −80°C for at least 60 days and are heat stable to 30°C. Erratic swimming behavior of fish suggests a neurological toxin. This is the first report of fish kills by any freshwater algal taxa from both field and laboratory studies.  相似文献

We provide the first evidence for navigation impact on resident river fish in China. The survey was conducted in the East Tiaoxi River that discharges into Lake Taihu near Shanghai, on which cargo ship traffic has dramatically increased in the recent economic development period. Water turbidity, ship traffic and other environmental factors were evaluated at 29 sites on the river. In a multiple regression model with the stepwise method, turbidity was significantly correlated with ship traffic (R 2 = 0.53). Another survey was conducted at 46 sites in the same area of the river, in which environmental factors were evaluated and fish individuals were electrofished. A generalised linear model with the stepwise method was applied to predict ecological indicators of the fish assemblage (species richness, individual density and Shannon’s diversity index) based on environmental factors. The results showed that the indicators were negatively correlated with turbidity and presence of artificial shore embankment structures. Another analysis further showed that the negative effect of turbid water was especially considerable for fish of smaller size. In conclusion, cargo ship traffic has a negative impact on fish assemblage, especially on smaller individuals, in the East Tiaoxi River. A higher profile for conservation actions and consideration of environmental impacts of such traffic should be given increasing focus for this and other similar East Asian water courses.  相似文献

Point counts are the most commonly used technique for surveying passerines during the breeding season. Several methods for estimating probabilities of detection during point count surveys have been developed. These methods have focused primarily on accounting for the influence of environmental factors (e.g., weather and noise) on detectability, however, the probability that birds are available for detection (e.g., sings or moves) during point counts has received less attention. We used sequential point counts to determine the effect of playback of the mobbing calls of Black‐capped Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) and the flight calls of Red‐tailed Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) on availability for detection (e.g., singing or moving) during point‐count surveys. We conducted 180 point counts over a 2‐yr period in central – east central Minnesota to evaluate the possible effect of playbacks on observed density, overall species richness, minute of first detection, and distance of first detection. We also used removal models to quantify the magnitude of changes in detectability and direction of response to playbacks for 10 focal species. Playback of the mobbing calls of Black‐capped Chickadees increased observed density and decreased the average distance of detection and time of first detection, whereas playback of the flight calls of a Red‐tailed Hawk resulted in a decrease in observed density and species richness, and an increased time of first detection. Playback treatment was a covariate in all best performing models for the 10 species analyzed, but the magnitude and direction of response to playbacks were species specific. The importance of playback type in detectability models indicates that the calls of heterospecifics can influence species availability for detection. As such, researchers using playback methods should seek to quantify species‐specific responses in detection probability and consider how component detection probabilities could influence survey outcomes.  相似文献

The few orientation studies that have been carried out with day-migrating birds show that they are able to use solar and magnetic orientation cues for orientation. Previous orientation experiments in Emlen funnels have been carried out either with hand-raised birds or with birds caught during resting periods at stop-over sites. The aim of our study was to test whether birds caught during active flight show a higher concentration of migratory activity in the seasonally appropriate migratory direction in the funnels than birds that had not experienced migration just before the funnel experiments. The topography at the alpine pass Col de Bretolet at the border of Switzerland and France allowed us to capture birds during active migratory flight. These birds were in full migration disposition. Orientation experiments with chaffinches suggested an influence of the sun because chaffinches did not orient in the seasonally expected direction, but probably showed positive phototaxis towards the light of the sun at the opposite side of the funnel. Chaffinches tested under overcast conditions oriented to the north-west which probably was a 'nonsense' orientation and not a reverse migration or compensatory behaviour. We conclude that freshly caught birds are too stressed to show appropriate orientation when tested immediately after catching.  相似文献

Critical swimming speeds (CSS) of sand smelt, Atherina presbyter , were measured in a laboratory flume. Individuals of all age classes (0+ to III +) found in the vicinity of Fawley power station, Hampshire, were tested at temperatures covering the seasonal range. The median CSS was 2.7 body lengths per second (bl s−1) at 5.8 °C, rising to 5.7 bl s−1 at 18.5°C.
A two-variable (water temperature and body length) regression model was fitted to the data, and this was used to assess escape potential of fish coming into contact with the power station cooling water intake currents and the extent of possible bias in fish length data collected from this source. It is concluded that the sand smelt remains vulnerable to entrainment at the power station over its whole length range and over the full range of seasonal temperatures and that size-dependent swimming performance will not lead to significant bias in sample length distributions.  相似文献

Critical swimming speed ( U crit) and rate of oxygen consumption of Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus acclimated to 4 and 11° C were determined to assess the influence of water temperature on performance. The physiological effect of exercise trials on fish held at two temperatures was also assessed by comparing haematocrit and plasma concentrations of cortisol, metabolites and ions collected from fish before and after testing. The U crit of fish acclimated and exercised at 4° C did not differ from those acclimated and exercised at 11° C [1·07 body lengths (total length) s−1]. While the standard metabolic rate of 11° C acclimated fish was 28% higher than that of 4° C fish, no significant difference was observed between fish acclimated at the two temperatures. Plasma concentrations of cortisol, glucose and lactate increased significantly from pre- to post-swim in both groups, yet only concentrations of cortisol differed significantly between temperature treatments. Higher concentrations of cortisol in association with greater osmoregulatory disturbance in animals acclimated at the lower temperature indicate that the lower water temperature acted as an environmental stressor. Lack of significant differences in U crit between temperature treatments, however, suggests that Pacific cod have robust physiological resilience with respect to swimming performance within temperature changes from 4 to 11° C.  相似文献
