Conifer bark is the target of numerous organisms due to its assimilated transport and nutrient storage functions. In the presented study, 100 mM salicylic acid (SA) was applied onto Norway spruce stems prior to being infested with bark beetles (Ips typographus L.), to study the temporal gradation of changes in condensed tannins (CT) and total phenolics (tPH) and their significance for mediating stress-tolerance. A significant accumulation of CT was monitored in untreated trees in response to progressive bark beetle infestation occurring from May onwards. In SA-treated infested trees, the CT values remained at control levels until May, but after the re-treatment of infested trees in June, the concentrations of CT rose significantly in comparison to the controls. The tPH values dropped 16 days after SA-treatment, independent of infestation, and later on remained at control level until July. In contrast, tPH contents accumulated in untreated infested trees in May, eased in June and increased again in July, when the trees were affected by the second generation of bark beetles. To sum up, in May and July when the highest beetle-flight activity was monitored the metabolic shift of phenolics within untreated infested trees differed significantly from the response of SA-treated trees. In addition, on SA-treated trees less entrance holes were monitored over the whole period of sampling when compared to untreated infested trees. These results provide evidence that SA-treatment alleviates the phenolic responses, activates the synthesis of condensed tannins and inhibits bark beetle colonisation.2.
Three species of Ophiostoma possessing Pesotum anamorphs isolated from bark beetles and their galleries infesting Abies species in Nikko, Japan, are described as new species. Ophiostoma nikkoense is characterized by brush-shaped synnemata producing long septate clavate conidia, perithecia with neck, and allantoid ascospores. Ophiostoma microcarpum has smaller perithecia with hyphoid ostiolar hyphae on the neck, and the ascospores are cylindrical or ossiform in side and face views. In Slovakia, a diversity of entomopathogenic fungi (Ascomycota, Hypocreales) associated with outbreaks of Ips typographus was studied in 81 localities and as many as 113 in vitro cultures of five entomopathogenic species were isolated from infected individuals: Beauveria bassiana (87 isolates), B. pseudobassiana (14 isolates), B. caledonica (6 isolates), Lecanicillium lecanii (4 isolates) and Isaria farinosa (2 isolates). B. pseudobassiana is recorded in natural populations of I. typographus for the first time. Biological properties of selected Beauveria isolates, including colony growth, biomass production, conidia yield and pathogenicity to I. typographus adults, were studied in a series of laboratory bioassays and much intra- and interspecific variability was detected. B. bassiana isolates produced biomass or conidia at significantly higher rate than B. pseudobassiana and B. caledonica isolates. Two B. bassiana isolates were selected as the most virulent to bark beetle adults, demonstrating a mean LC50 ranging from 0.72 to 2.05?×?106 conidia ml?1, and were qualified as promising candidates for biocontrol of I. typographus. Their virulence was significantly higher than that of the mycoinsecticides Boverol®, which was used as a reference strain in the virulence bioassays. 相似文献

Comparative assessment of attractiveness of different pheromone products is presented and the possibility of using pheromone-baited sticky traps for identification of the pest foci and monitoring of its abundance is considered. The test variants showed high selectivity in the territory of the Tsarskoye Selo open-air museum. Pheromone with the addition of a-pinene and limonene was more effective when using barrier traps. During the season, 2636 beetles were captured in standard traps, 2431 beetles, in standard traps with the addition of a-pinene, and 2469 beetles, in standard traps with the same components and limonene. Comparison of the barrier and sticky traps showed the same tendency in the pest population dynamics revealed by the two types of traps (correlation coefficient 0.8862). The use of additional components increased the duration of pheromone activity. Thus, improvement of the component composition of pheromones and the types of traps is required for using them as tools to monitor the European spruce bark beetle abundance and assess the risk of damage to trees. 相似文献

Two repeated DNA sequences isolated from a partial genomic DNA library of Helianthus annuus, p HaS13 and p HaS211, were shown to represent portions of the int gene of a Ty3 /gypsy retroelement and of the RNase-Hgene of a Ty1 /copia retroelement, respectively. Southern blotting patterns obtained by hybridizing the two probes to BglII- or DraI-digested genomic DNA from different Helianthus species showed p HaS13 and p HaS211 were parts of dispersed repeats at least 8 and 7 kb in length, respectively, that were conserved in all species studied. Comparable hybridization patterns were obtained in all species with p HaS13. By contrast, the patterns obtained by hybridizing p HaS211 clearly differentiated annual species from perennials. The frequencies of p HaS13- and p HaS211-related sequences in different species were 4.3x10(4)-1.3x10(5) copies and 9.9x10(2)-8.1x10(3) copies per picogram of DNA, respectively. The frequency of p HaS13-related sequences varied widely within annual species, while no significant difference was observed among perennial species. Conversely, the frequency variation of p HaS211-related sequences was as large within annual species as within perennials. Sequences of both families were found to be dispersed along the length of all chromosomes in all species studied. However, Ty3 /gypsy-like sequences were localized preferentially at the centromeric regions, whereas Ty1/ copia-like sequences were less represented or absent around the centromeres and plentiful at the chromosome ends. These findings suggest that the two sequence families played a role in Helianthusgenome evolution and species divergence, evolved independently in the same genomic backgrounds and in annual or perennial species, and acquired different possible functions in the host genomes. 相似文献

This is the first report on the ascomycete Metschnikowia typographi from the adults and larvae of the great spruce bark beetle Dendroctonus micans in Turkey. In total, 910 of 1928 adults and 44 of 149 larvae investigated during the two years were infected by the pathogen.
In a fresh smear the asci of the pathogen measure 18.5 ± 2.05 μm (14.7–22.3) in length and 2.1 ± 0.4 μm in width (n = 35). The ascospores are about 2 μm shorter than asci, having an average length of 16.4 ± 1.5 μm (14.2–18.0). The total
infection rate of D. micans was 47.2 %. The prevalence of M. typographi infections differed between localities and years. Different infection rates of male and female beetles of D. micans were not recognized. 相似文献

Increasing fecundity with increasing density has been observed for many cyclic herbivore populations, including some forest Lepidoptera. We monitored population density, body size and reproductive capacity of the cyclic lepidopteran, the autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata, Geometridae), from the early increase phase to the devastating outbreak density in northernmost Norway. Larval density of the species increased exponentially from 1998 to 2002 and remained at the outbreak level also in 2003. Within the same period, the body size and fecundity of individuals reduced as analysed from several parallel datasets on larvae, pupae and adults. In another study area in northernmost Finland, the density increase of the autumnal moth was moderate only, and true outbreak density was not attained during the study. Despite that, a reduction was again detected in the size and fecundity of individuals. Possible factors responsible for the reduced size and fecundity of individuals in the Norwegian population were quantitative shortage of foliage, rapid and delayed inducible resistances of the host, mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii), as well as crowding-induced responses of larvae. These factors likely acted in concert, although non-delayed responses to the density were emphasized. Our findings did not support the hypotheses of climatic release, inducible susceptibility of the host tree and mast depression (i.e. lowered chemical defence of the host tree after its mast seeding) as promoters of the fecundity-based density increase of the autumnal moth, since the reduced fecundity in relation to increased density was strongly against the predictions of these hypotheses. Therefore, we suggest that the density increase of autumnal moth populations is promoted by high survival rather than exceptionally high fecundity. 相似文献

Much research has focused on effects of plant parasites on host-plant physiology and growth, but little is known about effects of host physiological condition on parasite growth. Using the parasitic dwarf mistletoe Arceuthobium vaginatum subsp. cryptopodum (Viscaceae) and its host Pinus ponderosa, we investigated whether changes in host physiological condition influenced mistletoe shoot development in northern Arizona forests. We conducted two studies in two consecutive years and used forest thinning (i.e., competitive release) to manipulate host physiological condition. We removed dwarf mistletoe shoots in April, before the onset of the growing season, and measured the amount of regrowth in the first season after forest thinning (Study I: n=38 trees; Study II: n=35 trees). Thinning increased tree uptake of water and carbon in both studies, but had no effect on leaf N concentration or δ13C. Mistletoe shoot growth was greater on trees with high uptake of water and carbon in thinned stands than trees with low uptake in unthinned stands. These findings show that increased resource uptake by host trees increases resources to these heterotrophic dwarf mistletoes, and links mistletoe performance to changes in host physiological condition. 相似文献

The ovary structure of the myxophagan beetle, Hycdoscapha natans, was investigated by means of light and electron microscopy for the first time. Each of the two ovaries consists of three
ovarioles, the functional units of insect oogenesis. The ovary type is telotrophic meroistic but differs strongly from the
telotrophic ovary found among all polyphagous beetles investigated so far. All characters found here are typical of telotrophic
ovaries of Sialidae and Raphidioptera. Both taxa belong to the Neuropterida. As in all telotrophic ovaries, all nurse cells
are combined in an anterior chamber, the tropharium. The tropharium houses two subsets of germ cells: numerous nurse cell
nuclei are combined in a central syncytium without any cell membranes in between, surrounded by a monolayer of single-germ
cells, the tapetum cells. Each tapetum cell is connected to the central syncytium via an intercellular bridge. Tapetum cells
of the posterior zone, which sufficiently contact prefollicular cells, are able to grow into the vitellarium and develop as
oocytes. During previtellogenic and early vitellogenic growth, oocytes remain connected with the central syncytium of the
tropharium via their anterior elongations, the nutritive cords. The morphological data are discussed in the light of those
derived from ovaries of other Coleoptera and from the proposed sister group, the Neuropterida. The data strongly support a
sister group relationship between Coleoptera and Neuropterida. Furthermore, several switches between polytrophic and telotrophic

The maT clade of transposons is a group of transposable elements intermediate in sequence and predicted protein structure to mariner and Tc transposons, with a distribution thus far limited to a few invertebrate species. We present evidence, based on searches of publicly available databases, that the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae has several maT-like transposons, which we have designated as CbmaT elements, dispersed throughout its genome. We also describe two additional transposon sequences that probably share their evolutionary history with the CbmaT transposons. One resembles a fold back variant of a CbmaT element, with long (380-bp) inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) that show a high degree (71%) of identity to CbmaT1. The other, which shares only the 26-bp ITR sequences with one of the CbmaT variants, is present in eight nearly identical copies, but does not have a transposase gene and may therefore be cross mobilised by a CbmaT transposase. Using PCR-based mobility assays, we show that CbmaT1 transposons are capable of excising from the C. briggsae genome. CbmaT1 excised approximately 500 times less frequently than Tcb1 in the reference strain AF16, but both CbmaT1 and Tcb1 excised at extremely high frequencies in the HK105 strain. The HK105 strain also exhibited a high frequency of spontaneous induction of unc-22 mutants, suggesting that it may be a mutator strain of C. briggsae. 相似文献

A new species of Erysiphe sect. Uncinula is described and illustrated from Patagonia, Argentina. Erysiphe patagoniaca sp. nov., found on leaves of Nothofagus × antarctica, is similar to E. nothofagi and E. kenjiana, but differs in its appendages being twisted throughout their length and the number of appendages, asci, and ascospores.
The two endemic species of Erysiphe sect. Uncinula, E. magellanica and E. nothofagi, coexisted on the same leaves together with Erysiphe patagoniaca.

Summary Interspecific facultative social parasitism is well known in ants and in bumble-bees, but it is rarer in wasps. This form of parasitism is traditionally considered to be an intermediate stage in the evolution of obligate interspecific parasitism, where the parasites are no longer able to nest alone. We report field and experimental observations of a newly discovered facultative parasitic relationship between two closely related free-living Polistes species: P. nimphus and P. dominulus. P. nimphus foundresses sometimes usurp the nests of the larger P. dominulus before worker emergence. The invading queen takes over the nest with abundant abdomen stroking on the nest surface and is accepted by workers if they emerge 6 or more days after usurpation. Morphometric comparisons show that the usurper species, though smaller than its victims, has morphological adaptations consisting of larger heads, mandibles and front femora relative to their body size that may give it an advantage during nest invasion. This strategy is likely to be taken only after the foundress loses her original nest because invading P. nimphus queens have lower reproductive success than they would have had on their own nest. Overall, we found that P. nimphus usurpers use strategies of invasion similar to those of two obligate parasites, suggesting that this may be an example of one of the pathways by which social parasitism evolved.Received 4 April 2003; revised 8 August 2003; accepted 14 September 2003. 相似文献
