We present a study of interactions in the highly competitive insect communities inhabiting the carrion of small mammals. Via manipulation in a fully quantitative design, we delayed community development by excluding insect colonization in mouse and rat carcasses for 3 days, to study the role of early competitively dominant colonizers [burying beetles (Nicrophorus spp.; Coleoptera: Silphidae) and blowfly larvae (Diptera: Calliphoridae)] in the course of heterotrophic succession on small cadavers. Earlier studies demonstrated that in the case of large mammalian carrion, exclusion of insects’ access to the carcass in the early stages of decomposition altered the successional trajectory and species assemblages. However, the effect of such manipulation in easy monopolizable small vertebrate carrion remained unknown. Our results demonstrate that delaying insect access to carrion significantly lowered blowfly larvae abundances, while it simultaneously had no effect on colonization and carrion burial by burying beetles. Higher abundances of blowfly larvae seem to deter necrophagous beetles, whereas they are not harmful to the larvae of flesh flies, at least in larger rat carcasses. Predatory beetle species preferred the lower abundances of blowfly larvae, presumably due to better accessibility of their prey. Our results therefore suggest that in the course of the entire season, larvae of blowflies are the dominant competitors in small carcasses, and significantly affect the assembly of other insect groups, whereas burying beetles may exhibit a more temporal pattern of dominance.  相似文献

Vultures provide an essential ecosystem service through removal of carrion, but globally, many populations are collapsing and several species are threatened with extinction. Widespread declines in vulture populations could increase the availability of carrion to other organisms, but the ways facultative scavengers might respond to this increase have not been thoroughly explored. We aimed to determine whether facultative scavengers increase carrion consumption in the absence of vulture competition and whether they are capable of functionally replacing vultures in the removal of carrion biomass from the landscape. We experimentally excluded 65 rabbit carcasses from vultures during daylight hours and placed an additional 65 carcasses that were accessible to vultures in forested habitat in South Carolina, USA during summer (June–August). We used motion‐activated cameras to compare carrion use by facultative scavenging species between the experimental and control carcasses. Scavenging by facultative scavengers did not increase in the absence of competition with vultures. We found no difference in scavenger presence between control carcasses and those from which vultures were excluded. Eighty percent of carcasses from which vultures were excluded were not scavenged by vertebrates, compared to 5% of carcasses that were accessible to vultures. At the end of the 7‐day trials, there was a 10.1‐fold increase in the number of experimental carcasses that were not fully scavenged compared to controls. Facultative scavengers did not functionally replace vultures during summer in our study. This finding may have been influenced by the time of the year in which the study took place, the duration of the trials, and the spacing of carcass sites. Our results suggest that under the warm and humid conditions of our study, facultative scavengers would not compensate for loss of vultures. Carcasses would persist longer in the environment and consumption of carrion would likely shift from vertebrates to decomposers. Such changes could have substantial implications for disease transmission, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

  1. Many organisms contribute to the decomposition of carrion. For arthropods, many studies focus on the necrophagous community, those directly consuming carrion.
  2. Necrophagous arthropods use carrion as a shelter or food source. Therefore, carrion generally increases the abundance and biodiversity of necrophagous species. However, it is unclear if carrion has similar effects on detrital communities.
  3. This study examines changes in community structure and composition of necrophilous and detrital communities over the course of decomposition.
  4. Five pig head carrion were placed at least 7 m apart under cages in temperate mixed forest. Leaf litter was sampled 0 m, 1.5 m, and 3 m from each carrion weekly during summer, and monthly during autumn, until the first frost. Arthropods were extracted from leaf litter by using Berlese funnels.
  5. At the carrion site, necrophagous insects increased in abundance, species richness, and Shannon diversity during decomposition, and all decreased after dry decay.
  6. Detritus arthropods displayed a sharp increase in abundance during advanced decay, decreasing during dry decay, and a general increase over time for species richness and diversity.
  7. In conclusion, carrion can influence the surrounding, non-necrophagous arthropod community, highlighting the need to investigate carrion effects beyond typical necrophagous species to have a more holistic understanding of carrion ecology.

Carcasses of large herbivores are pulsed resources whose impact on animal communities and ecological processes is poorly understood. In temperate forests, long-lasting ungulate carcasses are a prime resource for many species of birds and mammals during winter. Facultative carrion-eaters also consume live prey, thus potentially leading to unexpected secondary effects on populations of species not directly linked to carcass exploitation. By snow-tracking and direct observations we investigated in Bia?owie?a Forest (E. Poland) whether large ungulate carcasses elicit spatial responses in facultative scavengers and their prey. We found that in the vicinity of carcass sites the probability of the presence of common ravens Corvus corax, jays Garrulus glandarius and red foxes Vulpes vulpes increased significantly. Indeed, large groups of the two bird species were exclusively found in those places. Because of these aggregations, the probability of predator–prey encounters (red foxes and brown hares Lepus europaeus) was significantly higher near carcass sites. Accordingly, the abundance of hares and other live prey such as red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris decreased at their vicinities, probably as a consequence of direct killing and/or predator avoidance. This study provides the first evidence of carrion pulses permeating into apparently distant trophic levels, such as herbivores, via facultative scavengers, thus highlighting some unnoticed but relevant effects of carrion resources on community structure.  相似文献

Aquatic insect assemblages were sampled in 2 sets of 18 small lakes in 2 regions of northeastern Ontario. Both sets included lakes with and without fish. In the set near Sudbury, fishless lakes were acidic. Using a standardized sweep net procedure, fishless lakes in both areas were found to have a greater abundance and richness of insects than lakes with fish. Irrespective of pH, fishless lakes supported a similar aquatic insect assemblage which was characterized by an abundance of nekton, especially Notonectidae, Corixidae, Graphoderus liberus (Dytiscidae) and Chaoborus americanus (Chaoboridae). Those taxa were typically absent from lakes with fish, which often had a marked abundance of Gerridae. It is concluded that fish predation is the most immediate factor structuring such aquatic insect assemblages, and is responsible for their change coincident with lake acidification.  相似文献

Sampling efficiency of several sieve mesh sizes (2, 1, 0.5, 0.2 and 0.1 mm) was tested in invertebrate assemblages associated to Sargassum stenophyllum. Samples of this brown algae were collected in southeastern Brazil to determine whether different sampling devices resulted in differences on the abundance and composition of the macrofauna. The 1 and 2 mm mesh sizes sampled less organisms, resulting in smaller abundances, densities, number of species and diversity, when compared to the other three mesh sizes, that achieved similar results. The most efficient sieve was the 0.5 mm mesh, sampling 85.8% and 94.5% of gammaridean and caprellidean amphipods, respectively, and 93.1% of gastropods. However, polychaetes and isopods were best sampled with the 0.2 mm sieve. Our results suggest that caution should be exercised when deciding on which sieve to use, as mesh sizes commonly used in benthic studies (1 and 0.5 mm) may result in very different estimates of diversity and abundance, as well as community structure patterns. Deformation of brain tissue in response to mechanical loading of the head is the root-cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Even below ultimate failure limits, deformation activates pathophysiological cascades resulting in delayed cell death. Injury response of soft tissues, such as the chest and spinal cord, is dependent on the product of deformation and velocity, a parameter termed the viscous criterion. We set out to test if hippocampal cell death could be predicted by a similar combination of strain and strain rate and if the viscous criterion was valid for hippocampus. Quantitative prediction of the brain's biological response to mechanical stimuli is difficult to achieve in animal models of TBI, so we utilized an in vitro model of TBI based on hippocampal slice cultures. We quantified the temporal development of cell death after precisely controlled deformations for 30 combinations of strain (0.05-0.50) and strain rate (0.1-50s(-1)) relevant to TBI. Loading conditions for a subset of cultures were verified by analysis of high-speed video. Cell death was found to be significantly dependent on time-post injury, on strain magnitude, and to a lesser extent, on anatomical region by a repeated-measures, three-way ANOVA. The responses of the CA1 and CA3 regions of the hippocampus were not statistically different in contrast to some in vivo TBI studies. Surprisingly, cell death was not dependent on strain rate leading us to conclude that the viscous criterion is not a valid predictor for hippocampal tissue injury. Given the large data set and extensive combinations of biomechanical parameters, predictive mathematical functions relating independent variables (strain, region, and time post-injury) to the resultant cell death were defined. These functions can be used as tolerance criteria to equip finite element models of TBI with the added capability to predict biological consequences.  相似文献

[PSI(+)], the prion form of the yeast Sup35 protein, results from the structural conversion of Sup35 from a soluble form into an infectious amyloid form. The infectivity of prions is thought to result from chaperone-dependent fiber cleavage that breaks large prion fibers into smaller, inheritable propagons. Like the mammalian prion protein PrP, Sup35 contains an oligopeptide repeat domain. Deletion analysis indicates that the oligopeptide repeat domain is critical for [PSI(+)] propagation, while a distinct region of the prion domain is responsible for prion nucleation. The PrP oligopeptide repeat domain can substitute for the Sup35 oligopeptide repeat domain in supporting [PSI(+)] propagation, suggesting a common role for repeats in supporting prion maintenance. However, randomizing the order of the amino acids in the Sup35 prion domain does not block prion formation or propagation, suggesting that amino acid composition is the primary determinant of Sup35's prion propensity. Thus, it is unclear what role the oligopeptide repeats play in [PSI(+)] propagation: the repeats could simply act as a non-specific spacer separating the prion nucleation domain from the rest of the protein; the repeats could contain specific compositional elements that promote prion propagation; or the repeats, while not essential for prion propagation, might explain some unique features of [PSI(+)]. Here, we test these three hypotheses and show that the ability of the Sup35 and PrP repeats to support [PSI(+)] propagation stems from their amino acid composition, not their primary sequences. Furthermore, we demonstrate that compositional requirements for the repeat domain are distinct from those of the nucleation domain, indicating that prion nucleation and propagation are driven by distinct compositional features.  相似文献

Identifying group members and individuals'' status within a group are fundamental tasks in animal societies. For ants, this information is coded in the cuticular hydrocarbon profile. We manipulated profiles of the ant Odontomachus brunneus to examine whether the releaser and primer effects of fertility signals are dependent on chemical context. Fertility status is signalled through increased abundance of (Z)-9-nonacosene (Z9 : C29). Across the ant''s distribution, populations have distinct hydrocarbon profiles but the fertility signal is conserved. Foreign queens and fertility-signal-treated workers from the same population, sharing a similar chemical background, elicited releaser effects from workers, whereas queens and fertility-signal-treated workers from different populations did not. Z9 : C29 presented without chemical background did not elicit releaser effects. A primer-effect experiment found that Z9 : C29, presented without a chemical background, did not inhibit worker reproduction. Our results demonstrate that a familiar chemical background is necessary for appropriate responses to fertility signals.  相似文献

Abstract  Succession patterns for insect fauna, spanning four seasons, on rabbit carcasses were studied in Guangzhou China from 2006 to 2008. A total of 49 taxa belonging to three orders and 15 families were collected and identified. Four decomposition stages were recognized: fresh, bloated, decay and dry stage. Taxa diversity was higher in bloated and decay stages than fresh and dry stages. Internal and ambient temperatures were measured. Maximum internal temperature arrived earlier in warmer seasons. The sequence of insect succession in this study follows the same general patterns: the Diptera peaked initially, and the Coleoptera peaked later. Chrysomya megacephala was the dominant species in four seasons. Its time point of different development stages on carrion could be the most important indicators for PMI (postmortem interval) estimation in Guangzhou. Yearly and seasonal differences in activities of insects were compared. Alpha diversity indices were calculated. There were no significant differences in Shannon-Wiener index, evenness ( J ) and dominance ( C ) between seasons and years. From the Jaccard similarity index, the highest similarity was between winter and spring, while the lowest was between summer and winter. Some species occurring exclusively in one season may be important to characterize different seasons. A list of the insect taxa associated with above-ground rabbit carrion during the four seasons was compiled, which can be used for estimating time since death in similar bio-climate areas.  相似文献

Species distributions can be analysed under two perspectives: the niche‐based approach, which focuses on species–environment relationships; and the dispersal‐based approach, which focuses on metapopulation dynamics. The degree to which each of these two components affect species distributions may depend on habitat fragmentation, species traits and phylogenetic constraints. We analysed the distributions of 36 stream insect species across 60 stream sites in three drainage basins at high latitudes in Finland. We used binomial generalised linear models (GLMs) in which the predictor variables were environmental factors (E models), within‐basin spatial variables as defined by Moran's eigenvector maps (M models), among‐basin variability (B models), or a combination of the three (E + M + B models) sets of variables. Based on a comparative analysis, model performance was evaluated across all the species using Gaussian GLMs whereby the deviance accounted for by binomial GLMs was fitted on selected explanatory variables: niche position, niche breadth, site occupancy, biological traits and taxonomic relatedness. For each type of model, a reduced Gaussian GLM was eventually obtained after variable selection (Bayesian information criterion). We found that niche position was the only variable selected in all reduced models, implying that marginal species were better predicted than non‐marginal species. The influence of niche position was strongest in models based on environmental variables (E models) or a combination of all types of variables (E + M + B models), and weakest in spatial autocorrelation models (M models). This suggests that species–environment relationships prevail over dispersal processes in determining stream insect distributions at a regional scale. Our findings have clear implications for biodiversity conservation strategies, and they also emphasise the benefits of considering both the niche‐based and dispersal‐based approaches in species distribution modelling studies.  相似文献

In this study, the role of the calcineurinpathway in skeletal muscle atrophy and atrophy-reducing interventionswas investigated in rat soleus muscles. Because calcineurin has beensuggested to be involved in skeletal and cardiac muscle hypertrophy, we hypothesized that blocking calcineurin activity would eliminate beneficial effects of interventions that maintain muscle mass in theface of atrophy-inducing stimuli. Hindlimb suspension and spinal cordtransection were used to induce atrophy, and intermittent reloading andexercise were used to reduce atrophy. Cyclosporin (CsA, 25 mg · kg1 · day1) wasadministered to block calcineurin activity. Soleus muscles were studied14 days after the onset of atrophy. CsA administration did not inhibitthe beneficial effects of the two muscle-maintaining interventions, nordid it change muscle mass in control or atrophied muscles, suggestingthat calcineurin does not play a role in regulating muscle size duringatrophy. However, calcineurin abundance was increased in atrophiedsoleus muscles, and this was associated with nuclear localization ofNFATc1 (a nuclear factor of activated T cells). Therefore, resultssuggest that calcineurin may be playing opposing roles during skeletalmuscle atrophy and under muscle mass-maintaining conditions.

Variation in plant traits among plant species may promote the development of a characteristic functional assemblage of insect herbivores associated with each plant species. However, only a small number of studies have detailed the representation of several herbivore guilds among co‐occurring plant species to determine whether the functional structure of herbivorous insect assemblages varies widely and consistently among plant species. The present study provides one of the few published data sets reporting on the density of several guilds of insect herbivores among numerous plant species. Variation in guild associations with plant phenology and season are also described. Insect herbivores were divided into 10 guilds, and the representation of these guilds was examined for 18 co‐occurring plant species. Guild densities and assemblage composition varied significantly among plant species, even when variation over time was taken into account. Variation in guild densities and assemblage composition were not strongly related to the taxonomic relationships of the plants. The highest densities of several guilds occurred in spring and summer, although other guilds were not strongly seasonal. Certain guilds were strongly associated with the presence of new leaves, whereas other guilds appeared to prefer mature leaves. This resulted in assemblage differences between samples containing new and mature leaves and samples containing mature leaves only. Even though the timing and duration of leaf and flower production varied among plant species, this did not explain all variation in guild densities among plant species. It is suggested that additional factors, including plant traits, are contributing to the wide and consistent variation in herbivore assemblage composition among plant species.  相似文献

A statistically significant linear relationship was found between annual mass loss of foliar litter in the late stages of decomposition and Mn concentration in the litter. We used existing decomposition data on needle and leaf decomposition of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. contorta), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), silver birch (Betula pendula L.), and grey alder (Alnus incana L.) from Sweden and Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) from Libya, to represent boreal, temperate, and Mediterranean climates. The later the decomposition stage as indicated by higher sulfuric-acid lignin concentrations, the better were the linear relationships between litter mass loss and Mn concentrations. We conclude that Mn concentrations in litter have an influence on litter mass-loss rates in very late decomposition stages (up to 5 years), provided that the litter has high enough Mn concentration. The relationship may be dependent on species as the relationship is stronger with species that take up high enough amounts of Mn.  相似文献

The predation rate and selection of specific prey byMysis relicta in Lake Tahoe depends on both the total and the relative densities of prey classes. Functional responses of mysids to changes in the density of two species of calanoid copepod prey were curvilinear in laboratory experiments. In the field and in 2-prey treatments, preference was usually positive forEpischura and negative forDiaptomus. However, the preference forEpischura was greatest at the lowest combined densities of prey in the laboratory and decreased at densities >100Epischura / m3 in the field. Several hypotheses to explain the inverse relationship between selectivity and prey density are discussed. Field assemblages of prey vary vertically, horizontally and seasonally. Potential effects of this hetrogeneity on both predator and prey populations are examined.  相似文献

Natural and human‐made disasters such as floods and logging occur in and around rivers. Stream‐dwelling aquatic insects respond to these disturbances in various ways. Primary consumers among them rely greatly on algae and leaf litter from riparian vegetation as food. Therefore, once a disturbance such as a flood has occurred, insects may find it difficult to find food in a stream, and the aquatic insect assemblage can be impacted greatly as a result. Disturbances in riparian areas also increase fine sediment loads into streams, damaging habitat and altering the aquatic insect assemblage. Deforestation impacts not only terrestrial but also aquatic animals. In this review paper, aquatic insect assemblages are assessed according to alterations in land use in and around streams. Following this paper, it is expected that clarification of aquatic insect fauna and their life cycles will progress and that the distribution and habitat use of aquatic insects will be afforded greater attention in forest management.  相似文献
