We examined functional teeth (except for upper canine teeth) of Pacific walruses that died or were harvested on the coast of the Chukchi Peninsula in 2005, 2007–2008, and 2010–2011. The dynamics of deposition of annual cement layers was investigated. The rate of cement deposition on the walls of tooth roots decreased significantly with age. The rate of its deposition on the lingual side of the upper teeth was much higher than that on their buccal side, but no such differences were observed on the lower teeth. The same cement layer was deposited unevenly in different parts of teeth (on its different sides and levels) with a general tendency of increasing in the width of the layer from the top to the lower parts of teeth. As a result of local widening of some cement layers with age, the tooth surface became rough, and knolls and rollers appeared there. As the age increased, external changes in teeth occurred: they became larger, more rounded, and heavier. We described a method for the preliminary determination of the relative age of walruses based on the ratio between the width of cement and dentin on the attrition surface of lower teeth (without cutting).  相似文献

An attempt has been made to determine the absoulte age, in terms of incremental growth layers in the dentine of unworn incisors, of dugong skulls already relatively aged by Mitchell (1973). About 60 loose incisors were also included in the study. Layer numbers were found to range from zeros to 57 1/2. Upper jaw tooth succession was related to layer number, tooth 5 coming into wear at 2 1/2 to 3 layers and tooth 6 between 5 1/2 and 8 1/2 layers. The date of death of the animals from which 11 of the skulls came was known with certainty and a twelfth possibly, and this information indicated that the layers are either annual or biannual but are unlikely to be laid down more frequently than this. It is suggested that sexual maturity is reached at approximately 10 layers (i.e. 10 or 5 years of age).  相似文献

The structure of ankylotic teeth in Xenopus laevis was studied by light, transmission, and scanning electron microscopy as well as by microradiography in decalcified and undecalcified specimens. The mature teeth of Xenopus laevis are calcified from the crown to the base, fused to the jaw bone, and have no uncalcified area, such as a fibrous ring separating the tooth into the crown and pedicle. Microradiography shows that the mature tooth and jaw bone appear as an X-ray opaque area, except for the basal region of the dentine. This region is composed of an X-ray translucent area and an X-ray opaque thin layer on the lingual side of the translucent area. The mature tooth is composed of two differently calcified areas: (1) a highly calcified area, which makes up almost all of the tooth and contains a thin layer of the basal dentine on the lingual side, and (2) a lowly calcified basal dentine, which is fused to the jaw bone. Therefore, the lowly calcified area does not completely separate the dentine and jaw bone. Repeating banding patterns among the collagen fibrils differ among the dentine-forming area and the matrices of dentine and jaw bone. During the formation of ankylosis of the tooth germ, collagen bundles in the dentine-forming area accumulate directly on the surface of the jaw bone. Consequently, the mature teeth of Xenopus laevis fuse to the jaw bone directly without the mediation of the other structures.  相似文献

The relationship between dental morphology, sex, body length and age of small cetaceans can be used to determine ontogeny, sexual dimorphism and geographical variation. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between dental morphology, sex, body size and age. A total of 91 specimens of P. blainvillei and 80 specimens of S. fluviatilis accidentally captured in fisheries or stranded in northern Rio de Janeiro (21 masculine37'-22 masculine25'S), from September 1988 to November 1996 were analysed. The teeth root diameter in P. blainvillei was significantly different between the sex; the values for females were larger than males. In neither species aid we observed significant in variations dimension and number of teeth, thickness of dentine and cemental layers and in the maximum width of cement as a function of body size. Age was related to increases in tooth length, root and cingulum diameters, and maximum width of cement in individuals of P. blainvillei, and tooth and crown lengths and maximum width of cement in individuals of S. fluviatilis. The observation of a linear growth between maximum width of cement and age in both species indicates that the equations obtained can be used to estimate relative age in P. blainvillei and S. fluviatilis in northern of Rio de Janeiro.  相似文献

Growth of upper canine teeth of male Antarctic fur seals ( Arctocephalus gazella ) which died of natural causes at Bird Island, South Georgia, was quantified from measurements of annual layers in longitudinal sections of teeth. Mean age at death was 7.69±0.07 years and this showed a small but significant increase through the period when samples were collected (1972/73–1988/89). There were significant correlations between morphometrics of teeth and those of seals, suggesting that tooth growth provided an indication of body growth. Tooth growth rate was lowest in seals which died early (age 4 years) and increased with age at death. Changes in the growth pattern of teeth suggested that fur seals which became sexually mature early also died early. Tooth growth layers deposited in each calendar year were compared with the expected layer depth based on a linear relationship between layer depth and age at which each layer was deposited. There was significant variation in the depth of tooth growth layers deposited in different years, suggesting that growth was greater in some years than others. No trends in cohort strengths were detected, but particularly poor years for growth were closely related to years in which reproductive performance was also observed to be low. Variations in growth from 1967/68 to 1987/88 were correlated significantly (P < 0.008) with the Southern Oscillation Index of climatic variation.  相似文献

In Hemiphractus fang–like teeth are ankylosed to the premaxilla, maxilla and prevomer, and bony odontoids are found on the dentary, angular and palatine bones. The odontoids are small, but a larger pair at the front of the lower jaw project upwards and backwards into the mouth and fit into a diastema between the anterior premaxillary teeth when the mouth is closed.
The teeth are unipartite and monocuspid, and each consists of a strongly recurved and elongated cone of orthodentine, capped at the tip by a thin layer of enamel. The inner circumpulpal layer of the dentine is tubular, but no tubules are present in the outer pallial layer. During tooth development, dentine is formed before the enamel matrix is produced, and the tooth germs lie horizontally beneath the ventral surface of each dentigerous bone. On eruption, the tooth germs migrate horizontally and become ankylosed to the outer edge of the jaw bone by a layer of cellular cementum.
During tooth replacement, the vast majority of the dentine of each tooth, and the cementum at the tooth base, are resorbed by osteoclasts. It is not clear whether the tips of the teeth are shed or not.  相似文献

The structure of the tooth plates of Protopterus and Lepidosiren was investigated to determine the causes and consequences of postlarval shape change. During growth, the basal area of the tooth plates increases, some cusps become more prominent, and shearing surfaces are sharpened. The jaw articulation restricts the range of movements of the lower jaw, and causes the tooth plates to occlude precisely; the resulting wear patterns are regular. The tooth plates are composed of enamel, trabecular dentine, and petrodentine. A petrodentine column forms the core of a tooth plate; it is flanked by trabecular dentine. Microhardness measurements show that trabecular dentine is comparable in hardness to mammalian dentine, whereas the petrodentine is comparable to enamel. The location and differential wear of these tissues produce the prominent cusps and self-sharpened blades of the adult tooth plates.  相似文献

An SEM study of the surface morphology of the major stages of mature and developing teeth of the leopard frog was made using anorganic preparations of the teeth and jaws. After initial development, the crown area changed little during subsequent tooth eruption, ankylosis and maturation. The thin enamel covering extended further down the shaft than expected. After ankylosis, the surfaces of the tooth continued to mature. The unmineralized gap between the crown and the pedestal, which is prominent in most amphibians, gradually filled in as the ankylosed tooth aged. The upper portion of the pedestal initially formed a dentine surface which was globular in appearance due to partial calcification of the surface collagen fibres but became smooth with uniformly calcified fibres as the ankylosed tooth matured. The lower portion of the pedestal was more variable and there was a gradual transition of dentine into a more cellular, bone-like tissue which contained lacunae and larger fibre bundles. This bone-like tissue was very distinct in surface morphology from the bone of the adjacent jaw, and as the tooth matured it changed from a coarse, woven appearance to one more like lamellar bone. Resorption bays were present in both the dentine and bony areas of teeth which were being shed. During development, the pedestal, which attaches the tooth to the jaw, formed as a separate calcification site and did not form a complete ring until fusion of its buccal surface with that of the overlying crown. A bony buccal lip formed early as part of the pedestal.  相似文献

An experiment in land management and Red deer population control was begun by the Nature Conservancy on the Isle of Rhum, a National Nature Reserve off the west coast of Scotland, in 1957. To assess the results fully it has become necessary to determine the most suitable ageing method which can be applied to the material, which has accumulated since from the annual deer culls and natural deaths.
Using mandibles only from individuals, whose age was certainly known by marking at birth, and which, in most cases were shot by mistake during subsequent annual culling operations, four different techniques were critically tested. These comprised correlating various combinations of jaw and tooth measurements with age, examining the nature and quantity of secondary dentine deposited within the crown of the first incisor, interpreting the number of layers in the pad of cementum beneath the crown of the first molar, and assessing the stages reached in tooth replacement, eruption and wear. Of these various methods, ageing by tooth replacement, eruption and wear proved the most reliable.  相似文献

The structure and tooth attachment of the comblike teeth and denticles of the ayu sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis, were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. The denticle is composed of a spoonlike crown with a spine pointed anteriorly, a triangular plate in the cervical region, and a root that curves laterally and tapers off to a point. The root apex is fused with a long thin pedicle that turns abruptly anteriad toward the jaw bone. Planes of the spine, the spoonlike crown, the triangle plate and the root of the denticle are varied, and the denticle is twisted in the region of the triangle plane. The superficial layer of the dentine is homogeneously calcified and is considered to be enameloid, because some of the inner dentinal epithelial cells in the tooth germ are columnar and possess cellular processes at their apical ends. The dentine is fibrous and fine dentinal tubules are visible in dentine treated with sodium hydroxide and observed by scanning electron microscopy. The upper half of the root is surrounded by a dense layer of collagen fibers running parallel to the tooth axis, and the lower half is encompassed by interlaced collagen fibers. The lower part of the root is open on its lingual side. The pedicle is a long rod which is homogeneously calcified and enmeshed by interlaced collagen fibers, and it curves mediad as it nears the jaw bone. The pedicles are interposed between a layer of gelatinous connective tissue and the jaw bone and terminate on the periosteum. Anatomical dissections were done to show the innervation of the teeth and mandible of the bottlenosed dolphin (Turslops truncatus). Using structural landmarks, a method has been devised for anesthetizing the lower jaw. With this procedure teeth can be extracted and age determined by counting dentine layers in sections of etched teeth. Animals of the most desirable ages can thus be selected and the ages of animals already in captivity can be determined.  相似文献

Volumetric estimations of teeth and bone on serial sections using a semiautomatic image analyzer indicate that, in the polyphyodont dentition of the pipid anuran Xenopus laevis (Daudin), the mean volume of the dentine composing the teeth is about 23.5% of the volume of the supporting maxillae and premaxillae. During tooth replacement, osteoclasts resorb up to 98% of the dentine. Teeth may be resorbed rather than shed in order to conserve tooth constituents because, if shedding of complete teeth did occur, a quantity of calcified tissue equal to perhaps 45 times the volume of the bone of the upper jaw might be lost over an animal's projected life span of about 13-15 years.  相似文献

A model for estimating age from teeth of the franciscana, Pontoporia blainvillei , was developed using teeth from 72 specimens taken incidentally in fishing nets in Brazil and Uruguay. The goal of the model was to allow for accurate and precise age estimates for a larger sample of specimens. Growthlayer characteristics were selected on the basis of similarities in growth layers among various species of cetaceans, including those whose growth layers have been calibrated for time, and on length groups in the franciscana, which calves seasonally. Growth-layer patterns, including relative size and appearance, in both dentine and cementum did not vary by sex but did vary by the orientation of the tooth when it was sectioned. The model developed proved useful in providing guidelines for consistency in age estimation for biological studies of the larger sample of animals. We recommend the development of this type of model for other species to facilitate standardizing age estimation.  相似文献

The population of Antarctic Fur seals Arctocephalus gazella at South Georgia is increasing rapidly and is therefore of great interest. Investigations of the population depend on two main techniques.
(1) Population assessment, because the population size is now too large for direct counts to be completely reliable, and serious underestimates are appearing in areas of high density. Aerial photography was used but needs further refinement before it becomes a consistently useful technique. Marking all pups on sample beaches was largely unsuccessful because pups moved from beach to beach before they could all be marked. A mark–recapture method was finally adopted and indicated that the numbers of pups present may be up to 54% higher than the numbers actually counted.
(2) The process of age determination from tooth characters, which is more difficult for Fur seals than other pinnipeds. The preparation and interpretation of the teeth of breeding cows is described, based on eleven specimens of known age. The most accurate results are obtained from whole teeth up to the age of 6, but thereafter interpretation of cement and dentine layers in thin sections must be used. It is concluded that while young animals are aged quite accurately, there is probably a tendency to underestimate the age of seals of more than 9 years.  相似文献

2003 年4 月至2004 年10 月对12 只狍东北亚种雌性生产的16 只仔狍进行了生长发育观察。记录仔狍出生日期,观察生长过程的毛色变化,定期检查牙齿生长状况,测定体尺和体重,所得数据采用SPSS13. 0 软件处理,绘制生长曲线并建立体长与体重的拟合曲线方程。结果表明,圈养条件下仔狍出生主要集中在5 月中旬至6
月中旬,出生时毛色呈暗棕黄色,身体两侧分布不规则的白斑,翌年换毛后白斑消失;出生仔狍的齿式为(0 03 0 /4 0 3 0)×2 = 20,成年狍的齿式为(0 1 3 3/4 0 3 3)×2 = 34,乳齿6 ~7 月龄开始脱换,8 ~9 月龄完成,脱换的顺序为中央切齿→两侧切齿→隅齿;(上、下颌)后臼齿的第一后臼齿2 月龄萌发、3 ~ 4 月龄生长完成,第
二后臼齿6 ~ 7 月龄萌发,8 ~9 月龄生长完成,第三后臼齿12 ~ 13 月龄萌发,14 ~ 15 月龄生长完成;乳齿的前臼齿从12 月龄开始脱换,14 月龄完成,脱换的顺序是上颌第一前臼齿和下颌第三前臼齿→上、下颌第二前臼齿→上颌第三前臼齿和下颌第一前臼齿;仔狍体尺增长率顺序为体长> 臀高> 肩高> 胸围> 腰围。仔狍体长与体重的拟合曲线方程是Y = 63.1084 - 0.0070x + 1.1e - 6 x2 - 3e- 11 x3 ,生长发育过程可分为生长快速期、生长缓慢期和雌雄狍生长差异期3 个阶段。  相似文献

Age determination in the Common duiker Sylvicapra grimmia was investigated by analysis of tooth eruption and replacement sequence, incremental lines of tooth cementum and tooth wear in a unique collection of 48 known-age skulls, and also by analysis by post-natal body growth in known-age duiker. In both the mandible and maxilla, permanent molariform teeth were fully erupted and in wear by 26 months of age. There was little variation in the age of eruption and replacement of all molariform teeth, making this a particularly useful feature of the duiker for age determination purposes. In contrast, the variability in eruption of the incisiforms, coupled with the difficulty in distinguishing deciduous incisiforms from the permanent counterparts, placed an unexpected limitation on the use of these teeth. Although the apparent linear relationship between tooth attrition and age has potential for further investigation as an age determination technique, the cementum annuli were not correlated with chronological age. Theoretical Von Bertalanffy equations were used to analyse body growth with age. It was concluded that because the asymptote of growth was reached at such an early age, and because there is so much individual variation in growth, body growth, including horn growth, is of very limited value for age determination. Resin onlay restoration is an esthetic alternative technique used for restoring extensively damaged primary molars. Understanding the behavior of materials under repeated functional stress and how the stress is transmitted to the remaining tooth structure is important. The aim of this study was to compare stresses in primary molars restored with indirect composite and compomer onlay. 3D frame models of the right mandibular and maxillary primary molars and the alveolar bone were created using computerized tomography images of a six-year-old girl. The enamel and dentine layers above the cement layer were unified to generate onlay restoration, and composite and compomer were used as restorative materials. The vertical occlusal load (100?N) was applied to the teeth in the occlusal contact areas. The von Mises stress distributions and normal stress distributions of the y-axis (parallel to the long axis of tooth) were evaluated. The occlusal stress is transmitted to the cervical part of healthy teeth by spreading it through the enamel layer. The composite and compomer restorative materials exhibited similar stress distribution patterns. An indirect technique creates a structure similar to the original morphological form, and it allows restorations to distribute high occlusal stresses and to minimize possible breakages.  相似文献

The fine structure and the concentration of trace elements in the cementum layer in functional teeth of subadult alligators (ca. 120 cm to 160 cm total length) was studied by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microradiography, and electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). The cementum layer was hypertrophic and consisted of two layers: the fibrous layer and the calcified layer. The two layers undergo developmental changes as a result of resorption and replacement. During the tooth replacement in the American alligator, trace elements decreased at the base of the dentine layer; the resorption of the alveolar bone occurred simultaneously at the tooth socket. We concluded that the resorption of the cementum in the alligator provided a useful indication of the mechanism of tooth replacement in crocodilian.  相似文献
