In an August-sown experiment the pattern of flower developmentwas followed for cv. Ultra (Lupinus albus L.) and cv. Unicrop(L. angustifolius L.) grown at low (10 plants m–2) andhigh (93 and 83 plants m–2, Ultra and Unicrop respectively)densities. Dry weight increase of flowers on the main-stem inflorescenceand first lateral below the main-stem were compared at differentfloral stages. Maximum flower weight was reached just priorto the open flower stage and remained constant or declined untila pod formed or abscission occurred. The time period betweenmaximum flower weight and pod formation or abscission was upto 10 days. Emergence of the inflorescence was earlier and thefirst flower of Ultra opened 10 days before Unicrop. Developmentof each terminal raceme (inflorescence) was acropetal, withpods having formed on lower flower nodes when terminal flowerswere still quite immature. Laterals forming the next generationof inflorescences grew from axillary leaf buds below an inflorescencewhile it was in full flower. The competitive effects of varying the density on the developmentof Vicia faba have been studied in a series of multifactorialexperiments where the spacing both between and within rows wassimultaneously altered. Over densities ranging from 11 to 67plants per metre2 seed production on an area basis tended tobe maximal at 35–45 plants per metre2 in the winter typeand at the highest density for the spring type. As the densityincreased the number of pods per plant and the extent of branchingfell progressively but there was no appreciable change in eitherseed size or the number of seeds per pod: thus seed productionwas solely governed by the number of mature pods formed. Thenumber of flowers per plant was more dependent on the numberof inflorescences than on the number of flowers per inflorescence.Increasing the population diminished the number of nodes bearinginflorescences particularly in the upper part of the shoot,while the size of the inflorescence was decreased to a lesserextent. The number of flowers forming mature pods was very small(9–14 per cent.). At the top of the shoot the flowerswere infertile, while above the middle node most of the podsformed were shed while still immature. Thus the primary effectof increasing density was to depress the number of nodes onthe lower half of the stems which produced mature pods. By thetime the flowering stage was reached plant height was alreadycorrelated with density due more to a change in internode lengththan an alteration in the number of differentiated nodes; atmaturity the differences in height were smaller due to the greaternumber of nodes in the widely spaced plants. For a given density,alterations in the distance between rows had little influenceon development. The possible physiological factors responsiblefor the changing pattern of development brought about by varyingdensity are discussed.  相似文献

Immature Glycine max (L.) Merr. seeds initially at 50–70mg fresh weight were successfully grown and matured in vitroin detached pods. Surface sterilized pods were floated in aliquid medium containing 5 per cent sucrose, minerals, and glutaminein 125 ml Erlenmeyer flasks and incubated at 25 °C under350–400 µE m–1 s–1 white light. Seedswhich were matured in vitro increased tenfold in dry weight,were visually similar to commercial seeds of the same size,were tolerant to desiccation and germinated with normal seedlinggrowth. Excised pods transported dye from the pedicel to thegrowing seed within 120 min. Soya bean pod culture is a usefultechnique to study the influence of single or combinations ofchemical or environmental parameters on regulation of seed growth,seed maturation, and subsequent germination events without theconfounding interactions with the mother plant. The mineral nutrition of fruiting plants of Pisum sativum L.,Lupinus albus L. and Lupinus angustifolius L. is examined insand cultures supplying adequate and balanced amounts of essentialnutrients. Changes in content of specific minerals in leaves,pods, seed coat, and embryo are described. P, N and Zn tendto increase precociously in an organ relative to dry matteraccumulation, other elements more or less parallel with (K,Mn, Cu, Mg and Fe) or significantly behind (Ca and Na) dry weightincrease. Some 60–90 per cent of the N, P and K is lostfrom the leaf, pod and seed coat during senescence, versus 20–60per cent of the Mg, Zn, Mn, Fe and Cu and less than 20 per centof the Na and Ca. Mobilization returns from pods are estimatedto provide 4–39 per cent of the seeds' accumulations ofspecific minerals, compared with 4–27 per cent for testatransfer to the embryo. Endosperm minerals are of only minorsignificance in embryo nutrition. Comparisons of the mineral balance of plant parts of Lupinusspp. with that of stem xylem sap and fruit tip phloem sap supportthe view that leaves and pod are principal recipients of xylem-borneminerals and that export from these organs via phloem is themajor source of minerals to the seeds. Endosperm and embryodiffer substantially in mineral compostition from phloem sap,suggesting that selective uptake occurs from the translocationstream during seed development. Considerable differences are observed between species in mineralcomposition of plant organs and in the effectiveness of transferof specific minerals to the seeds Differences between speciesrelate principally to Ca, Na and certain trace elements.  相似文献

The prediction that very high seed yields of dry beans (Phaseolusvulgaris L.) would be produced by the delayed transplantingof large plants has been tested in a factorial experiment withfour dates of transplanting and eight plant populations. Therewere significant differences in yield between transplantingdates and between population densities, and there was a significantdate-density interaction. At low plant densities (up to about30 plants m–2) the three transplanted treatments yieldedless than the hand-sown controls, and late transplanting yieldedless than early. At the highest density the situation was reversed;all three transplanted treatments out-yielded the controls andlate transplanting tended to out-yield plants transplanted early.The biggest yield was 340 g seed m–2 from a transplantedcrop grown at 35 plants m–2. The data on yield fitted a modified rectangular hyperbola ofthe form where y is yield per unit area, p is the number of plants perunit area, t is the number of days between sowing and transplanting,and Bo, n, m, and p are arbitrary parameters. This equationaccounted for 91 per cent of the variation in yield with t andp. It is suggested that late transplanting had adverse effects,due to transplanting ‘shock’ and which were mostmarked at low plant densities; and beneficial effects, ascribableto an effect on plant ‘plasticity’, which were mostmarked at high plant densities. The effect of genes ar (violet flowers, small hilum) and n (thick,fleshy pod wall) on whole plant in senescence peas was examinedby comparing Ar- with arar and N- with nn plants in segregatingprogenies. Homozygosity for ar or n significantly delayed the time whenthe plants were ready for harvest of their entire seed crop.These genes did not delay either the onset of reproduction orthe onset of apical arrest in the first instance. However, whereasAr- N- plants almost invariably senesced and died as the firstseed crop matured, the majority of arar and/or nn plants entereda period of secondary growth and a further fruiting cycle. Comparedwith Ar- plants, arar plants had over twice as many pods andseeds but individual seeds were 58 per cent lighter and totalseed yield (wt) was 19 per cent less. Pod length was unaffected.Compared with N-plants, nn plants had shorter pods (16 per cent),fewer seeds per pod (21 per cent), smaller seeds (20 per cent)and a lower total seed yield (wt 14 per cent less). It appearsthat ar and n impose a lower metabolic drain per reproductivenode as a consequence of their effects on hilum anatomy andpod morphology, respectively. These mutants disrupt the normalpattern of monocarpic senescence by breaking the coordinationbetween apical arrest and subsequent events. The developingseed crop delimited by the first arrest fails to cause plantdeath, possibly because sink size is less than in normal counterparts. In chickpeas (Cicer arietinum L.) flowering and pod developmentproceed acropetally. In plants grown under normal field conditionsat Hyderabad, in peninsular India, and at Hissar in north India,at successively apical nodes of the branches there was a declinein pod number per node, weight per pod, seed number per podand/or weight per seed. The percentage of nitrogen in the seedswas the same in earlier and later-formed pods at Hyderabad;at Hissar the later-formed seeds contained a higher percentage.Earlier- and later-formed flowers contained similar numbersof ovules. The decline in seed number and/or weight per seedin the later-formed pods of 28 out of 29 cultivars indicatedthat pod-filling was limited by the supply of assimilates orother nutrients. By contrast, in one exceptionally small-seededcultivar there was no decline in the number or weight of seedsin later-formed pods, indicating that yield was limited by ‘sink’size. Immature Glycine max (L.) Merrill seeds, initially between 50and 450 mg f. wt, were grown and matured successfully in vitro.Excised seeds were floated in a liquid medium containing 5 percent sucrose, minerals and glutamine in flasks incubated at25 °C under 300 to 350 µE m–2 s–1 fluorescentlight. During 16 to 21 d in culture, seeds grew to a matured. wt of 100 to 600 mg per seed at an average rate of 5 to 25mg d. wt per seed d–1 depending on initial size. Growthrates were maximal during the first 8 to 10 d in vitro but declinedwith loss of green colour in the cotyledons. Seed coats rupturedwith rapid cotyledon expansion during the first 2 d in culture.Embryos were tolerant to desiccation and 80 to 90 per cent germinatedif removed from culture before complete loss of green colour.The growth of excised seeds in vitro exceeded the growth ofseeds in detached pods, but when windows were cut in pods topermit direct exposure of seeds to the medium, seed growth wascomparable. Delay in sowing the cultivars Ostlers (Viciafaba var. equina) and Herz Freya (V.faba var. minor) beyond late February depressed yield. Densities of at least sixty plants per m2 were required to ensure that yield was not limited by sowing rate. Differences in yield in response to changes in density were reflected particularly in changes in numbers of pod-bearing nodes per plant, but also to a lesser extent in numbers of pods per pod-bearing node. The inherently larger seed weight of cv. Ostlers compared with cv. Herz Freya did not confer any yield advantage, differences in number of beans per pod and number of pods per pod-bearing node tending to equalize the yield of the two cultivars. The most stable component of yield throughout was number of beans per pod, and the least stable was number of pod-bearing nodes per plant.  相似文献

In a further analysis of the changing pattern of developmentinduced in Vicia faba by varying the density, it has been foundthat a reduction from a high to a low density has little influenceon the subsequent development unless such thinning is delayeduntil the flowering phase. By this time, save for widely spacedplants, the level of self shading within the population hasbecome marked. In fact, at high densities (55–65 plants/metre2)during the early-ripening phase the light intensity at groundlevel may fall to 0.03 daylight while a considerable proportionof the plant—up to 38 per cent.—may receive lessthan o-1 daylight. At low densities (11-I2 plants/metre2) theminimum intensity at ground level is 0.14 daylight and lessthan 3 per cent, of the shoot is subjected to o-1 daylight.In pot experiments, using a range of screens, it was establishedthat the compensation point is about o-I daylight. Thus, asthe density is increased the light gradient between the apexand the base becomes progressively steeper and the proportionof the leaves not actively assimilating correspondingly greater. To assess the ways in which such a light gradient operates,experiments were carried out in which either the apex or theinflorescences or leaves were removed over different sectionsof the stem or various parts of the shoot shaded and detailedrecords made of development, particularly of flower- and pod-production.Removal of the upper leaves or shading the apex primarily increasesthe rate of pod abscission after the flowers have set. Partialremoval of the inflorescences, especially at the lower nodes,has an opposite effect, while decapitation, though it augmentsthe percentage of flowers which produce immature pods, subsequentlycauses fewer pods to reach maturity. Shading of the lower nodesreduces at these nodes the number of mature pods but may resultin more pods maturing at the upper nodes. It is concluded that when the light gradient is such as to restrictthe internal supplies of substrates the growth of those organswith the least competitive ability, e.g. the newly formed pods,is arrested. It is at this phase that the factors controllingabscission come into play and that abscission is dependent upona balance between the levels of auxins and the production ofan abscission factor.  相似文献

The heritability, the number of segregating genes and the type of gene interaction of nine agronomic traits were analysed based on F2 populations of synthetic oilseedBrassica napus produced from interspecific hybridization ofB. campestris andB. oleracea through ovary culture. The nine traits—plant height, stem width, number of branches, length of main raceme, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, length of pod, seed weight per plant and 1000-seed weight—had heritabilities of 0.927, 0.215, 0.172, 0.381, 0.360, 0.972, 0.952, 0.516 and 0.987 respectively, while the mean numbers of controlling genes for these characters were 7.4, 10.4, 9.9, 12.9, 11.5, 21.7, 20.5, 19.8 and 6.4 respectively. According to estimated coefficients of skewness and kurtosis of the traits tested, no significant gene interaction was found for plant height, stem width, number of branches, length of main raceme, number of seeds per pod and 1000-seed weight. Seed yield per plant is an important target for oilseed production. In partial correlation analysis, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and 1000-seed weight were positively correlated with seed yield per plant. On the other hand, length of pod was negatively correlated (r = -0.69) with seed yield per plant. Other agronomic characters had no significant correlation to seed yield per plant. In this experiment, the linear regressions of seed yield per plant and other agronomic traits were also analysed. The linear regression equation wasy = 0.074x8 + 1.819x9 + 6.72x12 -60.78 (R 2 = 0.993), wherex 8, x9 and x12 represent number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and 1000-seed weight respectively. The experiment also showed that erucic acid and oil contents of seeds from F2 plants were lower than those of their maternal parents. However, glucosinolate content was higher than that of the maternal plants. As for protein content, similar results were found in the F2 plants and their maternal parents. It was shown that the four quality traits, i.e. erucic acid, glucosinolate, oil content, and protein content, had heritability values of 0.614, 0.405, 0.153 and 0.680 respectively.  相似文献

The effect of genotype and plant density, over the range from100 to 277 plants m–2, on plant to plant variation inprecision sown microplots has been assessed for three ‘leafless’(afafstst) pea (Pisum sativum) lines. This range of plantingdensities did not significantly affect the total above groundbiological yield per unit area of two of the genotypes (BS5and BS4) whereas the biological yield of the third (BS151) declinedat densities above 156 plants m–2. The differences weredue to changes in seed yield. The effect of planting densityon the variation between plants for biological yield withinthe microplots differed between the genotypes. The distributionpattern of BS4 and BS5 changed from normal to skewed with increaseddensity, while the distribution for BS151 remained skewed atall planting densities. The differences between the three genotypes in the proportionof biological yield partitioned into seed yield (harvest index)on a unit area basis was due almost entirely to the differencesin structure of the plant populations. The maximum level ofpartitioning by individual plants was similar for all threelines. The difference between this maximum for an individualand the crop harvest index therefore represents the area forimprovement of crop harvest index through breeding. It is suggestedthat improvements in dried pea yields will come, therefore,by selecting plants which form more uniform populations withregard to plant size and to the proportion of plant biomasspartitioned into seed (plant harvest index). The experimental study was conducted during the period of 2008–2010 at the experimental field of the Institute of Forage Crops in Pleven. The hybridization scheme included direct and back crosses covering four varieties of forage pea (Pisum sativum L.), namely two spring ones, Usatii 90 and Kamerton from Ukraine, and a winter one from Bulgaria, Pleven 10. There was analyzed the inheritance of quantitative traits such as plant height, height to first pod, pod number per plant, seed number per plant, seed number per pod, seed weight per plant and number of fertile nodes per plant of parental components (P1 and P2) and both first (F1) and second (F2) hybrid generations. The cross Usatii 90 × Pleven 10 showed the highest real heterosis effect for plant height (8.26%), pods per plant (158.79%), seeds per plant (272.16%), seeds per pod (42.09%), seed weight per plant (432.43%) and number of fertile nodes per plant (117.14%). The cross Pleven 10 × Usatii 90 had the highest real heterosis effect height to first pod (11.06%). In F2 plants, the strongest depression for plant height (5.88%), seeds per plant (57.88%), seeds per pod (55.93%) and seed weight per plant (55.99%) was in the cross Usatii 90 × Pleven 10, for height to first pod (1.47%) in the cross Kamerton × Pleven 10 and for number of fertile nodes per plant (15.91%) in the cross Pleven 10 × Usatii 90. The highest positive degree of transgression for number of fertile nodes per plant (165.64%) and seed weight per plant (162.10%) was in the cross Pleven 10 × Kamerton and for pod number per plant (102.54%) and seeds per plant (99.13%) in Kamerton × Pleven 10. The stability of the characters was determined. Low variability in F1 and F2 was found in plant height (3.97–6.85%). Variability of number seeds per plant in F1 was highest (11.86–33.23%). For all other traits, the variability varied from average to high. A lower narrow-sense heritability coefficient was observed for plant height, height to first pod, pods per plant, seeds per plant and seed weight per plant (from 0.001 to 0.230). In few cases, such as in fertile nodes per plant (0.39 and 0.81) and seeds per pod (0.44), the coefficients of broad-sense heritability were higher.  相似文献

Crop growth and disease epidemics in sprayed and non-sprayed bean plots, artificially infected with rust (Uromyces appendiculatus) 3 weeks after emergence. were assessed weekly in two cultivars, at two locations for two seasons. Disease intensity was regulated by the application of a fungicide at 5 spray frequencies. Fungicide application influenced leaf area index (LAI) and reduced rust intensity. The fungicide had no significant effect on other diseases and dead leaf area. Fungicide application increased seed yield (SY) by increased numbers of pods per plant (PP). Rust severity was strongly correlated with pustule density but the overall relationships among rust assessment parameters depended on cultivar and location. Seed yield and pods per plant were highly correlated with LAI. The relationships between LAI and seeds per pod or seed weight depended on cultivar and location. Overall rust assessment parameters (rust severity and pustule density) showed close, negative relationships with seed yield. seed weight and pods per plant but not with seeds per pod. The relationships obtained in the partially resistant line 6-R-395 were less definite than those in the susceptible line Mexican 142. Abstract The intensity of seed predation the invasive tropical legume Leucaena leucocephala by the bruchid Acanthoscelides macropthalmus was investigated in south‐eastern Queensland, Australia. The number of seeds damaged by A. macropthalmus as a proportion of total seeds available was found to increase the longer the pods remained on the tree. Seed predation ranged from a mean of 10.75% of seeds on pods that remained on the plant for 1 month and increased to 53.54% for pods that remained of the plant for 4 months. The low bruchid populations at high pod densities results in ‘predator satiation’. However, pods dehisce over time and the proportion of pods available over time to the bruchid correspondingly declines. By the time bruchid densities build up, most pods have dehisced and the seeds consequently escape predation. As a result the number of seeds lost to bruchid damage increases only marginally over time. Despite the levels of seed predation observed over the course of the study, the number of seeds in the soil seedbank almost doubled over time increasing from 8.5 seeds m?3 to 15.5 seeds m?3 over a 4‐month period. Levels of seed predation and addition of seeds to the soil seedbank were not correlated. The taxonomic (subspecies) status and apparency of host plants as measured by plant and patch traits (average plant height, density of podding plants and patch size) did not influence levels of seed predation. Pre‐dispersal seed predation studies need to take into account the pod/seed retention behaviour of the plant. The ability of the bruchid to regulate the invasiveness of Leucaena through influencing its demography is likely to be diminished if the insect populations cannot increase rapidly enough to use the seeds before pod dehiscence.  相似文献

Abstract:  Yield-related responses of cowpea plants to artificial infestation of Aspavia armigera , at the onset of podding, at different densities, 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 pairs per cage were studied on cowpea in caged pots and field plots. With increasing insect density there was a corresponding significant increase (P < 0.05) in pod and seed damage, and reduction in pod length, numbers of pods per plant and seeds per pod, seed weight and total yield. Pod production was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in infested plants than in the control; at 1- and 16-pair levels, pod production increased by 75% and 81% over the uninfested control in the pot and field experiments respectively. Then again, with increase in insect density there was a progressive high-magnitude increase in pod abortion reaching 252.6% and 200% at the 32-pair level on potted and field cowpea, respectively, resulting in drastic reductions in the number of harvestable pods. Cowpea compensation mechanism was lost completely as insect population increased. The lowest density of A. armigera at which significant reduction (P < 0.05) occurred in total seed yield compared with the control was one pair. The relationship between insect density and pod damage, and yield was best described by a quadratic + linear fit, while that between insect density and seed damage was best fit as polynomial with very high significant r -values. Chi-squared analysis showed that the models derived from pot and field data were similar.  相似文献

The branching pattern of eight sequential branching types ofgroundnut was studied and the contribution of each node (fruitingpoint) of the n, n+1 and n+2 branches (if present) to the totalnumber of mature pods per plant ascertained. The results indicatedthat n+2 branches were present in several varieties and theircontribution to mature pods was significant in some of them.The first three nodes of the n+1 branches contributed from 50.6per cent (in a variety which had significantly more n+2 branches)to 88 per cent in other varieties. The results also indicatedthat the contribution of the late formed n+1 branches was lowand the total mature pods produced from all nodes decreasedwith each successive (chronologically) n+1 branch in all thevarieties studied. Neither the total number of n+1 branchesnor the number of mature pods per node was related to the podnumber or pod yield, but the total number of fruiting pointsfrom all branches showed a high correlation with pod yield andmature pod number at harvest. The results suggest that for higherpod yield it may be desirable to have only a few n+1 branches(4 or 5) but with more fruiting points on each branch. Exogenous application of cytokinin to raceme tissues of soybean(Glycine max(L.) Merr.) has been shown to stimulate flower productionand to prevent flower abortion. The effects of these hormoneapplications have been ascertained for treated tissues, butthe effects of cytokinins on total seed yields in treated plantshave not been evaluated. Our objectives were to examine theeffects of systemic cytokinin applications on soybean yieldsusing an experimental line of soybeans, SD-87001, that has beenshown to be highly sensitive to exogenous cytokinin application.Soybeans were grown hydroponically or in pots in the greenhouse,and 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) was introduced into the xylem streamthrough a cotton wick for 2 weeks during anthesis. After theplants had matured, the number of pods, seeds per pod, and thetotal seed weight per plant were measured. In the greenhouse,application of 3.4 x 10-7 moles of BA resulted in a 79% increasein seed yield compared with controls. Results of field trialsshowed much greater variability within treatments, with consistent,but non-significant increases in seed number and total yieldsof about 3%.
