Pinus sylvestris L., Abies alba Mill. and Fagus sylvatica L.—the significant forest forming tree species in Europe are important for palaeoecological interpretations based on the results of pollen analysis of fossil deposits. The potential pollen loading for Pinus sylvestris, Abies alba and Fagus sylvatica was modelled using simulated and actual vegetation maps, measured fall-speed values and pollen productivity estimates from the literature. The influx of fir pollen drops sharply with distance from the pollen source due to the high fall speed and moderate pollen productivity. The vast majority of Abies alba pollen is deposited within less than 50 m of the sampling site and a major proportion within 100 m. For beech the corresponding numbers would be 300 and 1,800 m, and for pine 1,000 and 4,500 m. The observed mean pollen accumulation rate (PAR) values for Pinus and Fagus were ca. 5,800 and 1,100 grains cm−2 year−1, respectively. In the case of Abies, the mean annual PAR for the whole region is ca. 700 grains cm−2 year−1. In SE Poland the regional signal is represented by PARs of Abies alba <200 grains cm−2 year−1 and of Fagus sylvatica <500 grains cm−2 year−1. The local presence/absence threshold values for Abies alba, Fagus sylvatica and Pinus sylvestris are >1,000 grains cm−2 year−1, >2,000 grains cm−2 year−1 and >3,500 grains cm−2 year−1 respectively.  相似文献

The induction of secondary somatic embryogenesis in Abies numidica De Lann. was achieved. Precotyledonary, cotyledonary, and desiccated cotyledonary embryos were used as explants. Cotyledonary embryos before desiccation were the most suitable. The most beneficial was induction medium Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) with 1 mg dm−3 thidiazuron and 1000 mg dm−3 myo-inositol. Initiation frequency was from 1 to 34 %. Maturation of somatic embryos was achieved on modified Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 40 g dm−3 maltose, 100 g dm−3 polyethylene glycol-4000 and 10 mg dm−3 abscisic acid. Mature somatic embryos after three weeks of desiccation germinated on SH medium with 10 g dm−3 charcoal and 10 g dm−3 sucrose. Annual and seasonal rates of net nitrogen mineralization were determined for 19 sites in the spruce-fir forests of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. These sites included high and low elevation stands of red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) and Fraser fir (Abies fraseri (Pursh.) Poir.) on east and west exposures on Whitetop Mountain, Virginia; Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina; and Clingman's Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Mineralization rates were determined using in situ soil incubations in PVC tubes with ion exchange resin bags placed in the bottom of the tubes to collect leachate. Throughfall was collected in resin bags placed in the top of the tubes. Average initial NH4-N + NO3-N ranged from 0.6 to 4.8 kg N/ha across all plots, and average mineralization rates ranged from 26 to 180 kg-N ha−1 yr−1. Throughfall ranged from 18 to 32 kg-N ha−1 yr−1 with NH4-N accounting for about two-thirds of the throughfall N across all sites. Throughfall and mineralization rates were not related to elevation or exposure. The high rates of N mineralization and relatively high nitrate concentrations indicate that leaching losses of nitrogen and associated cations could be substantial. Requests for offprints  相似文献

Direct comparisons between photosynthetic O2 evolution rate and electron transport rate (ETR) were made in situ over 24 h using the benthic macroalga Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta), growing and measured at a depth of 1.8 m, where the midday irradiance rose to 400–600 μmol photons m−2 s−1. O2 exchange was measured with a 5-chamber data-logging apparatus and ETR with a submersible pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometer (Diving-PAM). Steady-state quantum yield ((Fm′−Ft)/Fm′) decreased from 0.7 during the morning to 0.45 at midday, followed by some recovery in the late afternoon. At low to medium irradiances (0–300 μmol photons m−2 s−1), there was a significant correlation between O2 evolution and ETR, but at higher irradiances, ETR continued to increase steadily, while O2 evolution tended towards an asymptote. However at high irradiance levels (600–1200 μmol photons m−2 s−1) ETR was significantly lowered. Two methods of measuring ETR, based on either diel ambient light levels and fluorescence yields or rapid light curves, gave similar results at low to moderate irradiance levels. Nutrient enrichment (increases in [NO3 ], [NH4 +] and [HPO4 2-] of 5- to 15-fold over ambient concentrations) resulted in an increase, within hours, in photosynthetic rates measured by both ETR and O2 evolution techniques. At low irradiances, approximately 6.5 to 8.2 electrons passed through PS II during the evolution of one molecule of O2, i.e., up to twice the theoretical minimum number of four. However, in nutrient-enriched treatments this ratio dropped to 5.1. The results indicate that PAM fluorescence can be used as a good indication of the photosynthetic rate only at low to medium irradiances. Abies faxoniana is a key species in reforestation processes in the southeast of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau of China. The changes in growth, photosynthesis and nutrient status of A. faxoniana seedlings exposed to enhanced ultraviolet-B (UV-B), nitrogen supply and their combination were investigated. The experimental design included two levels of UV-B treatments (ambient UV-B, 11.02 KJ m−2 day−1; enhanced UV-B, 14.33 KJ m−2 day−1) and two nitrogen levels (0; 20 g N m−2). The results indicated that: (1) enhanced UV-B significantly caused a marked decline in growth parameters, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), photosynthetic pigments and F v/F m, (2) supplemental nitrogen supply increased the accumulation of total biomass, Pn, photosynthetic pigments and F v/F m under ambient UV-B, whereas supplemental nitrogen supply reduced Pn, and not affect biomass under enhanced UV-B, (3) enhanced UV-B or nitrogen supply changed the concentration of nutrient elements of various organs.  相似文献

Spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana Clem.) is an important and recurrent disturbance throughout spruce (Picea sp.) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea L.) dominated forests of North America. Forest carbon (C) dynamics in these ecosystems are affected during insect outbreaks because millions of square kilometers of forest suffer growth loss and mortality. We tested the hypothesis that a spruce budworm outbreak similar to those in the past could switch a forest from a C sink to a source in the near future. We used a model of ecosystem C to integrate past spruce budworm impact sequences with current forest management data on 106,000 km2 of forest in eastern Québec. Spruce budworm-caused mortality decreased stand-level merchantable C stocks by 11–90% and decreased ecosystem C stocks by 2–10% by the end of the simulation. For the first 13 years (2011–2024), adding spruce budworm significantly reduced ecosystem C stock change for the landscape from a sink (4.6 ± 2.7 g C m−2 y−1 in 2018) to a source (−16.8 ± 3.0 g C m−2 y−1 in 2018). This result was mostly due to reduced net primary production. The ecosystem stock change was reduced on average by 2 Tg C y−1 for the entire simulated area. This study provides the first estimate that spruce budworm can significantly affect the C sink or source status of a large landscape. These results indicate that reducing spruce budworm impacts on timber may also provide an opportunity to mitigate a C source.  相似文献

The effect of electrons and gamma irradiation on the induction of micronuclei in cytokinesis-blocked human peripheral blood lymphocytes was investigated to understand the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of electrons compared with gamma rays. Blood samples were irradiated with an 8 MeV pulsed electron beam, at a mean instantaneous dose rate of 2.6 × 105 Gy s−1. Gamma irradiation was carried out at a dose rate of 1.98 Gy min−1 using 60Co gamma source. A dose-dependent increase in micronuclei yield was observed. The dose–response relationships for induction of micronuclei fitted well to a linear–quadratic relationship and the coefficients α and β of the dose–response curve were estimated by fitting the data using error-weighted minimum χ 2 method. The RBE of 8 MeV electrons were found to be near unity as compared with gamma rays.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken in seven major forest types of temperate zone (1500 m a.s.l. to 3100 m a.s.l.) of Garhwal Himalaya to understand the effect of slope aspects on carbon (C) density and make recommendations for forest management based on priorities for C conservation/sequestration. We assessed soil organic carbon (SOC) density, tree density, biomass and soil organic carbon (SOC) on four aspects, viz. north-east (NE), north-west (NW), south-east (SE) and south-west (SW), in forest stands dominated by Abies pindrow, Cedrus deodara, Pinus roxburghii, Cupressus torulosa, Quercus floribunda, Quercus semecarpifolia and Quercus leucotrichophora. TCD ranged between 77.3 CMg ha−1 on SE aspect (Quercus leucotrichophora forest) and 291.6 CMg ha−1 on NE aspect (moist Cedrus deodara forest). SOC varied between 40.3 CMg ha−1 on SW aspect (Himalayan Pinus roxburghii forest) and 177.5 CMg ha−1 on NE aspect (moist Cedrus deodara forest). Total C density (SOC + TCD) ranged between 118.1 CMg ha−1 on SW aspect (Himalayan Pinus roxburghii forest) and 469.1 CMg ha−1 on NE aspect (moist Cedrus deodara forest). SOC and TCD were significantly higher on northern aspects as compared with southern aspects. It is recommended that for C sequestration, the plantation silviculture be exercised on northern aspects, and for C conservation purposes, mature forest stands growing on northern aspects be given priority.  相似文献

Spectra of detached electrons produced in mutual collisions of D ions in the relative energy range of 1.8−6.1 eV were investigated. In addition to electrons corresponding to conversion of D ions into D0 atoms, peaks corresponding to the production of D2 molecules and D2 molecular ions in the ground electronic state were revealed. The existence of D2 ions over a time longer than the period of molecular oscillations was confirmed experimentally for the first time.  相似文献

Eco-physiological responses of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria to light   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The eco-physiological responses of three nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria (N-fixing cyanobacteria), Aphanizomenon gracile, Anabaena minderi, and Ana. torques-reginae, to light were assessed under nutrient saturation. The N-fixing cyanobacteria were isolated into monocultures from a natural bloom in a shallow colored lake and their growth irradiance parameters and pigment composition were assessed. The different ecological traits related to light use (μmax, α, I k) suggest that these N-fixing cyanobacteria are well adapted to low light conditions at sufficient nutrients, yet interspecific differences were observed. Aphanizomenon gracile and Anabaena minderi had high relative growth rates at low irradiances (ca. 70% of those in high light), low half saturation constant for light-limited growth (I k < 9.09 μmol photon m−2 s−1) and high efficiency (α < 0.11 day−1 μmol photon−1 m2 s). Conversely, Ana. torques-reginae showed poorer light competitiveness: low relative growth rates at low irradiances (ca. 40% of those in high light), low α (0.009 day−1 μmol photon−1 m2 s) and higher I k (35.5 μmol photon m−2 s−1). Final densities in Aphanizomenon gracile and Anabaena minderi reached bloom densities at irradiances above 30 μmol photon m−2 s−1 with different hierarchy depending on irradiance, whereas Ana. torques-reginae never achieved bloom densities. All species had very low densities at irradiances ≤17 μmol photon m−2 s−1, thus no N-fixing blooms would be expected at these irradiances. Also, under prolonged darkness and at lowest irradiance (0 and 3 μmol photon m−2 s−1) akinetes were degraded, suggesting that in ecosystems with permanently dark sediments, the prevalence of N-fixing cyanobacteria should not be favored. All species displayed peaks of phycocyanin, but no phycoeritrin, probably due to the prevailing red light in the ecosystem from which they were isolated.  相似文献

An investigation into the changing phytoplankton biomass and total water column production during autumn sea ice formation in the eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica showed reduced biomass concentrations and extremely low daily primary production. Mean chlorophyll-a concentration for the entire study period was extremely low, 0.15±0.01 mg.m−3 with a maximum of 0.35 mg.m−3 found along the first transect to the east of the grid. Areas of low biomass were identified as those either associated with heavy grazing or with deep mixing and corresponding low light levels. In most cases phytoplankton in the <20-μm size classes dominated. Integrated biomass to 100 m ranged from 7.1 to 28.0 mg.m−2 and correlated positively with surface chlorophyll-a concentrations. Mean PBmax (photosynthetic capacity) and αB (initial slope of the photosynthesis-irradiance curve) were 1.25±0.19 mgC. mgChla −1.h−1 and 0.042±0.009 mgC.mgChla −1.h−1.(μmol.m−2.s−1)−1 respectively. The mean index of photoadaptation,I k, was 32.2±4.0 μmol.m−2.s−1 and photoinhibition was found in all cases. Primary production was integrated to the critical depth (Z cr) at each production station and ranged from 15.6 to 41.5 mgC.m−2.d−1. It appears that, other than grazing intensity, the relationship between the critical depth and the mixing depth (Z mix) is an important factor as, ultimately, light availability due both to the late season and growing sea ice cover severely limits production during the austral autumn.  相似文献

A genetic transformation system has been developed for selected embryogenic cell lines of hybrids Abies alba × A. cephalonica (cell lines AC2, AC78) and Abies alba × A. numidica (cell line AN72) using Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The cell lines were derived from immature or mature zygotic embryos on DCR medium containing BA (1 mg l−1). The T-DNA of plant transformation vector contained the β-glucuronidase reporter gene under the control of double dCaMV 35S promoter and the neomycin phosphotransferase selection marker gene driven by the nos promoter. The regeneration of putative transformed tissues started approximately 1 week after transfer to the selection medium containing 10 mg geneticin l−1. GUS activity was detected in most of the geneticin-resistant sub-lines AN72, AC2 and AC78, and the transgenic nature of embryogenic cell lines was confirmed by PCR approach. Plantlet regeneration from PCR-positive embryogenic tissues has been obtained as well. The presence of both gus and nptII genes was confirmed in 11 out of 36 analysed emblings.  相似文献

Considering the growing interest for mushrooms and the demand search of natural antioxidants sources, the aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant properties of two edible widely used Boletus species, Boletus edulis, and Boletus auranticus, collected from Istra region in Croatia in late summer 2007. To evaluate the antioxidant properties and content of antioxidant compounds, scavenging capacity on DPPH˙, OH˙, and O2˙ radicals, reducing power and capacity to inhibit lipid peroxidation has been investigated. It is determined that content of total phenols (41.82 ± 0.08 mg gallic acid equivalent per gram of dry extract) was higher for B. edulis. Using high performance liquid chromatography/diode array detector analysis, the main antioxidant compound, variegatic acid, has been detected and quantified. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate assay was used as a preliminary free radical–scavenging evaluation. By this assay, it has been found that B. edulis dry mushroom extract exhibits 50% of inhibition value at the extract concentration of 0.016 ± 0.0003 mg/ml. The extracts were capable of reducing iron(III) and, thus, are capable of donating electrons. Using electron paramagnetic resonance spin-trapping and spin-probing techniques, activity against relevant reactive species, ˙OH and O2˙ radical, was analyzed for both mushroom extracts. Both investigated extracts are determined as good inhibitors for ˙OH radical reduction, and both exhibited significant capacity for scavenging O2˙ radical and for that could help to prevent or meliorate oxidative damage. Only B. edulis extract prevents lipid peroxidation. Investigated mushroom extracts could represent easily accessible natural antioxidant resource.  相似文献

To investigate annual variation in soil respiration (R S) and its components [autotrophic (R A) and heterotrophic (R H)] in relation to seasonal changes in soil temperature (ST) and soil water content (SWC) in an Abies holophylla stand (stand A) and a Quercus-dominated stand (stand Q), we set up trenched plots and measured R S, ST and SWC for 2 years. The mean annual rate of R S was 436 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, ranging from 76 to 1,170 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, in stand A and 376 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, ranging from 82 to 1,133 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, in stand Q. A significant relationship between R S and its components and ST was observed over the 2 years in both stands, whereas a significant correlation between R A and SWC was detected only in stand Q. On average over the 2 years, R A accounted for approximately 34% (range 17–67%) and 31% (15–82%) of the variation in R S in stands A and Q, respectively. Our results suggested that vegetation type did not significantly affect the annual mean contributions of R A or R H, but did affect the pattern of seasonal change in the contribution of R A to R S.  相似文献

Somatic embryogenesis was achieved from mature embryos excised from stored hybrid Abies alba × Abies cephalonica seeds. Embryogenic tissue formation occurred on SH medium supplemented with 1 mg dm−3 benzyladenine. The formation of embryogenic tissue was influenced by the time of storage of seeds. Initiation frequencies 27.2 – 29.0 % were obtained in embryos isolated from 6 month and 1 year stored seeds. Embryos excised from 4-year stored seeds showed no response. Embryogenic structures appeared on the surface of hypocotyl. They originated without previous callus formation. Embryogenic tissues were maintained in long-term cultures. After maturation treatment cotyledonary somatic embryos developed and germinated in small plantlets. Montane conifers of western North America commonly colonize mineral surfaces resulting from landslides, lahars, mudflows, and rock avalanches. This colonization can include shade-tolerant conifers that may eventually dominate the forest in a pattern termed “direct” succession. Documenting examples of this long-term successional process are useful for identifying alternative successional trajectories and indicating potential controlling mechanisms for subsequent experimental analysis. This study (1) analyzes the 1992 status of the conifer colonization on the coarse-textured surface of a 1650 AD rock avalanche in northern California and (2) measures individual growth and survivorship in permanent plots between 1992 and 2003. Increment cores of large trees indicated initial conifer colonization before 1700 AD with continuous subsequent colonization. Mean conifer density in 1992 was 725 (SD = 747) ha−1 with densities increasing with decreasing rock sizes. Densities were not correlated with distances to possible seed sources. Median heights were <1 m, and the mean proportional height growth rate for healthy individuals was 0.0166 year−1. The mortality rate for individuals ≥0.1-m tall was <0.007 year−1. The conifers were more numerous than shrubs, and there was little apparent evidence of facilitation or inhibition of conifers. The species assemblage is mostly (89%) Abies concolor, Pinus monticola, and Pinus ponderosa individuals dispersed across an elevation range of 1870–2040 m a. s. l. This is an atypical species mix for these elevations in this location, and this mix is not readily predicted from species properties such as seed mass, seed flight distance, or drought tolerance.  相似文献

Cardiac activity of two Mediterranean limpets was tested at different salinities. Patella caerulea inhabits the lower midlittoral where it is exposed to variations in salinity, while P. aspera experiences more stable salinity conditions in the infralittoral fringe. When exposed to moderate hypo- and hypersalinity (23 g l−1 and 43 g l−1) for 24 min, P. caerulea showed no significant variation in heart rate with respect to the control salinity (33 g l−1), while P. aspera exhibited a significant increase in heart rate in both conditions. This suggests a rise in metabolic rate due to activation of behavioural responses or physiological regulation. When exposed to extremely low salinity (3 g l−1) for 24 min, heart contractions ceased in most specimens of P. caerulea. A smaller number of specimens also displayed cessation of heart beat when exposed to extremely high salinity (63 g l−1). The heart beat resumed quickly in all specimens when they were returned to control salinity conditions. In contrast, cardiac activity was not interrupted in any of the P. aspera specimens at the 3 g l−1 and 63 g l−1 salinity levels, but strong bradycardia was evident. Contractile activity of the heart ceased in all specimens of P. caerulea and P. aspera when they were exposed to prolonged hypo-osmotic stress (3 g l−1 for 24 h). High-cell-density production of recombinant growth hormone of Lateolabrax japonicus (rljGH) expressed intracellularly in Pichia pastoris was investigated. In the regular strategy of induction at a cell density of 160 g l−1, short duration of intracellular rljGH accumulation (17 h) resulted in a low final cell density of 226 g l−1. Thus, a novel strategy of induction at a cell density of 320 g l−1 was investigated. In this strategy, the preinduction glycerol-feeding scheme had a significant effect on the post-induction production. Constant glycerol feeding led to a decrease of the specific rljGH production and specific production rate because of low preinduction specific growth rate. This decrease was avoided by exponential glycerol feeding to maintain a preinduction specific growth rate of 0.16 h−1. The results from exponential glycerol feeding indicated that the rljGH production depended on the preinduction specific growth rate. Moreover, mixed feeding of methanol and glycerol during induction improved the specific production rate to 0.07 mg g−1 h−1 from 0.043 mg g−1 h−1. Consequently, both high cell density (428 g l−1) and high rljGH production could be achieved by the novel strategy: growing the cells at the specific growth rate of 0.16 h−1 to the cell density of 320 g l−1 and inducing the expression by mixed feeding.  相似文献

The estuarine red alga,Bostrychia radicans, was subjected to osmotic stresses ranging from hypo-osmotic (9.9‰) to hyperosmotic conditions (37.4‰). The growth rate decreased with increasing salinities and showed a maximum in a mesohaline medium, while the photosynthetic rate and the chlorophyll a content increased under hyper-osmotic conditions. The rate of respiration remained constant over the salinity range tested.B. radicans revealed typical characteristics of “shade plants” having a low light compensation point at 3–4 μE m−2 s−1 correlated with a low photon flux density of 70–100 μE m−2 s−1 for saturation of photosynthesis. These physiological properties may explain the success ofB. radicans in estuarine habitats.  相似文献

Evidence for abiotic immobilization of nitrogen (N) in soil is accumulating, but remains controversial. Identifying the fate of N from atmospheric deposition is important for understanding the N cycle of forest ecosystems. We studied soils of two Abies pinsapo fir forests under Mediterranean climate seasonality in southern Spain—one with low N availability and the other with symptoms of N saturation. We hypothesized that biotic and abiotic immobilization of nitrate (NO3 ) would be lower in soils under these forests compared to more mesic temperate forests, and that the N saturated stand would have the lowest rates of NO3 immobilization. Live and autoclaved soils were incubated with added 15NO3 (10 μg N g−1 dry soil; 99% enriched) for 24 h, and the label was recovered as total dissolved-N, NO3 , ammonium (NH4 +), or dissolved organic-N (DON). To evaluate concerns about possible iron interference in analysis of NO3 concentrations, both flow injection analysis (FIA) and ion chromatography (IC) were applied to water extracts, soluble iron was measured in both water and salt extracts, and standard additions of NO3 to salt extracts were analyzed. Good agreement between FIA and IC analysis, low concentrations of soluble Fe, and 100% (±3%) recovery of NO3 standard additions all pointed to absence of an interference problem for NO3 quantification. On average, 85% of the added 15NO3 label was recovered as 15NO3 , which supports our hypothesis that rates of immobilization were generally low in these soils. A small amount (mean = 0.06 μg N g−1 dry soil) was recovered as 15NH4 + in live soils and none in sterilized soils. Mean recovery as DO15N ranged from 0.6 to 1.5 μg N g−1 dry soil, with no statistically significant effect of sterilization or soil type, indicating that this was an abiotic process that occurred at similar rates in both soils. These results demonstrate a detectable, but modest rate of abiotic immobilization of NO3 to DON, supporting our first hypothesis. These mineral soils may not have adequate carbon availability to support the regeneration of reducing microsites needed for high rates of NO3 reduction. Our second hypothesis regarding lower expected abiotic immobilization in soils from the N-saturated site was not supported. The rates of N deposition in this region may not be high enough to have swamped the capacity for soil NO3 immobilization, even in the stand showing some symptoms of N saturation. A growing body of evidence suggests that soil abiotic NO3 immobilization is common, but that rates are influenced by a combination of factors, including the presence of plentiful available carbon, reduced minerals in anaerobic microsites and adequate NO3 supply.  相似文献
