The EC Directive concerning integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC Directive 96/61/EC) obliges all Member States
to make an integrated assessment of the impacts on the environment “as a whole”, as regards granting permission for and the
operation of environmentally relevant industrial installations. The determination of “Best Available Techniques” BAT plays
an essential role in the material transformation of the IPPC-Directive. An integrated approach for the assessment of cross-media
aspects of techniques for the determination of BAT is outlined in this paper, which is grounded on the basic concept of Life
Cycle Assessment (LCA), emphasising the need for decision support. The proposed assessment approach is applied to a case study
sinter production in an integrated iron and steel works, which forms the base for several recommendations concerning further

An improved method for performing the Elson-Morgan reaction in the microliter range is described, wherein the proceeding hydrolysis of the sample and the heating of the reaction components is improved. This is accomplished with help of a covered rack. The cover exerts pressure on the plugs of the reaction vials preventing them from bursting open during heating or hydrolysis and preventing water from seeping into the reaction mixture during cooling in a water bath. The reaction vials are readily available from most laboratory suppliers. The simultaneous cooling of all reaction vials is accomplished by immersion of the closed rack in ice-cold water. The rack is also applicable in all reactions, where many samples must be heated and/or cooled at the same time. 相似文献

An investigation was undertaken in order to assess the performance of neutron activation analysis and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry techniques for determining reference values for minor and trace elements in human lungs of urban subjects. Results show that in both instances experimental conditions must be carefully optimized to guarantee reliability of experimental data. Strict criteria for tissue sampling and pretreatment also had to be set. Provisional reference values for ca. 50 elements could thus be established.

The present study investigated whether and to which extent temporal integration in bats is influenced by echolocation behavior. One way to quantify temporal integration is to measure the detection threshold for a pair of short tone pips as a function of the temporal separation between the pips. To asses the effect of preceding sonar emission on temporal integration in the bat, Megaderma lyra, the detection thresholds of identical subjects were measured in a passive as well as in an active paradigm. In the passive paradigm, the presentation of the pip pairs was independent of the bats' sonar emissions; in the active paradigm, the presentation was triggered by the bats' sonar emissions. In both cases, the bats showed a very short integration time in the range of 100-200 micros. Moreover, the comparison of the active and passive results within each bat revealed no systematic differences in the two measuring paradigms. These results indicate that temporal integration is not influenced by echolocation. Simulations with a computer model of cochlear filtering based on measurements of M. lyra cochlear tuning suggest that the perceptual temporal integration is dominated by the integration of the cochlear filters. 相似文献

Endogenous “stem cell niche” (SCN) accompanying vessels contains immune system components which in vivo determine differentiation of multi potent stem cells toward proper cell types in given tissue. Combinations of sex steroids may represent novel chemical approach for neuronal areas of regenerative medicine, since they cause transformation of vascular smooth muscle stem cells into differentiating neuronal cells. Circulating sex steroids are present during pregnancy and can be utilized where needed, when various embryonic/fetal tissues develop from their stem cells. Utilization of induced regeneration of tissues (regenerative medicine) is expected being more effective in sudden failures of younger individuals carrying intact SCN, as compared to established chronic disorders caused by SCN alteration. An essential component of SCN are monocyte-derived cells exhibiting tissue-specific “stop effect” (SE) preventing, for instance, an aging of neuronal cells. Its alteration causes that implantation of neuronal stem cells will also result in their differentiation toward aging cells. When we repair the SE by supply of circulating mononuclear cells from young healthy individuals, we may be able to provide novel regenerative treatments of age-induced neural diseases by sex steroid combinations. Summary The habitat hectares approach is an explicit, quantitative method for assessing the quality of vegetation by adding scores that are assigned to 10 habitat attributes. We believe it will be more repeatable and transparent than other methods that rely on subjective judgement. However, we have four principal criticisms of the method as it is currently proposed: (i) measurement of some of the attributes may be subject to considerable error that varies among assessors; (ii) the comparison of each measure with a single benchmark does not accommodate appropriate disturbance regimes; (iii) the proposed combination of attributes leads to some apparent internal inconsistencies; and (iv) it is not clear how the method will actually be used in practice. We suggest modifications to address these concerns and improve the proposed method. Finally, we make additional suggestions about the method's potential application, including: separate reporting of the extent and quality of different vegetation types to avoid the inappropriate combination of measures of area and quality; valuing appropriate disturbance regimes in natural areas; and considering very carefully the application of compensation or mitigation measures. 相似文献

LCA aims to help direct decisions in an environmentally sustainable direction. It indicates the environmental effects of choices
and evaluates these against this background. Approaches to evaluation in LCA differ substantially, related to the way of modelling
environmental effects and to the way these effects are combined into an overall judgement on alternative options. Several
approaches are now operational, which are linked to different paradigms in decision making. It is shown that the choice of
paradigm is quite decisive on the outcome of the analysis. Also within similar paradigms, different methods now operational
may lead to different outcomes. These latter differences may be alleviated more easily than those related to paradigmatic
choices, as they are partly a matter of refinement, and they partly result from legitimate differences in subjective priorities.
The more basic paradigmatic differences can hardly be bridged. The practical relevancy of the subject is proven by applying
different operational methods to one case, showing widely differing outcomes. The paradigm behind evaluating environmental
effects is either values based, directly or through policy decisions, or economics based, as individual preferences measured
in the monetary terms of willingness-to-pay. Accordingly, the different methods are “policy-oriented” or “monetary”. It may
be doubted if the differences between these can be overcome in standardisation. 相似文献
