To get an overview of the feeding practices applied to dermersal sharks in captivity, a questionnaire was sent to 15 European public aquaria. The most common dermersal shark species kept in the participating aquaria are Carcharhinus plumbeus (n=9), Carcharias taurus (n=7), and C. melanopterus (n=6). Body weight (BW) was calculated using captive estimated body length (BL) and actual weight data obtained from commercial fisheries. The estimated BW for C. plumbeus in all participating aquaria is higher than the calculated BW. The feeding rate (FR) for adult C. plumbeus varied widely within participating aquaria (2.3–11.5% BWcal/week or 32–112 kcal/kg BWcal/week). The FR for adult C. plumbeus was lower (1.2–7.9% BWest/week or 17–99 kcal/kg BWest/week) using the estimated BW. Adult Carcharias taurus were fed at 1.3–5.0% BWcal/week or 70–170 kcal/kg BWcal/week. Negaprion brevirostris was fed at 5.0% BWest/week or 57 kcal/BWest/week. The relationship between FR and estimated BW is expressed as FR=54.5 e?0.033BW. In this study, the feeding frequency for C. plumbeus varied between 1–7 times a week, with an average of 3.3 times a week. Diet in all aquaria consisted of both lean and fatty fish, and sometimes squid or crustaceans. Supplementation of vitamins is common practice in 80% of the surveyed aquaria, although a wide variety of quantity and quality was observed. Ten aquaria (66%) add iodine, as potassium iodide (0.4–12.5 mg KI/kg BW/week) or calcium‐iodate (322–1,500 mg/kg food/week), to their food. To better understand the biology of Schizopygopsis younghusbandi Regan, 1905 and its relationship with management considerations, this study describes the relationships between otolith size and fish length and age, verifies annual periodicity of otolith annulus formation, and estimates the S. younghusbandi growth parameters. These age and growth characteristics were studied using 694 specimens collected from August 2008 to August 2009. Otoliths grew asymmetrically throughout the range of standard length (SL) studied, showing a clear pattern of alternating translucent and opaque bands. Marginal increment ration (MIR) analysis of specimens up to 6 years of age indicated that one opaque band and one translucent band were laid down each year. Maximum observed age was 17 years, corresponding to a female of 35.8 cm SL and 589.1 g body weight (BW). The SL‐BW relationship was described as BW = 1.122 × 10?5 SL3.030 for sexes combined. The von Bertalanffy growth function was used to model back‐calculated lengths as Lt = 338.4 (1?e?0.233 (t + 0.403)) for males, and Lt = 433.9 (1?e?0.194 (t + 0.397)) for females. Growth performance of S. younghusbandi was relatively higher than those of other Schizothoracinaes inhabiting the same river.  相似文献

As it is often not possible to immediately analyse individuals sampled in the field, captured fish are preserved and stored for later investigation. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of various preservation methods on subsequent changes in morphometric parameters while also providing correction factors to re‐calculate the original body dimensions when sampled fish are measured at a later date. In this study, juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis, 66.5 ± 10.2 mm total length) were measured directly after capture, then either frozen at ?20°C, preserved in 70% ethanol, or in 4% formalin. They were again measured after 24 h, 3 days, 7 days, and thereafter on a weekly basis for 8 weeks. Ethanol‐preserved perch greatly decreased length and weight; formalin preservation also led to a comparable length reduction, but increased the weight of the perch. In contrast, frozen perch showed less shrinkage and only moderate weight loss. Of the three preservation methods, freezing clearly caused the fewest distortions. Hence, freezing is recommend as the most preferable preservation method, especially in multi‐disciplinary studies on fish ecology; for all other preservation methods the correction factor over time will have to be pre‐determined for each species and size class.  相似文献

The present study aims to estimate the size at first sexual maturity and fecundity for female Gudusia chapra from the lower Ganges River, northwestern Bangladesh. A total of 250 female specimens, 3.60–13.70 cm in standard length (SL) and 1.00–43.60 g in body weight (BW), were collected during March–August 2006. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) for females was calculated by the equation, GSI (%) = (GW/BW) × 100. The size at first sexual maturity of females was estimated by the relationship between their gonadosomatic index and standard length. The specimen larger (≥8.00 cm in SL) than first size at sexual maturity was used for the estimation of fecundity. The size at first sexual maturity for female G. chapra was considered to be 8.00 cm SL in the Ganges River. The mean total fecundity was 20200 ± 6500 and ranged from 10800 to 36200. This study should be useful for fisheries biologists/managers to impose adequate regulations for sustainable‐fishery management in the Ganges River and elsewhere in Bangladesh.  相似文献

The present study describes the length‐weight relationships (LWRs), length‐length relationships (LLRs), Fulton's condition factor (KF), size at first sexual maturity, spawning season, sex ratio and fecundity of the Morari Aspidoparia morar (Hamilton, 1822) (Cyprinidae). Sampling was done using traditional fishing gear jhaki jal (cast net) from July 2010 to June 2011. Total length (TL), fork length (FL) and standard length (SL) were measured with digital slide calipers. Individual body weight (BW) and gonad weight (GW) were determined to an accuracy of 0.01 g for all specimens. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) was calculated and size at first maturity for males and females estimated using GSI and TL as indicators. Female ≥ size at first maturity was used to determine fecundity. A total of 1200 specimens (males = 552, females = 648) ranging from 4.06–12.84 cm TL and 0.53–16.75 g BW were analyzed. The overall coefficient b for the LWR indicated positive allometric growth (>3.00) in males and isometric growth in females (~ 3.00). ancova (analysis of covariance) revealed significant differences between males and females (P < 0.001). All LLRs were highly correlated (r2 > 0.973, P < 0.001). Sizes at first sexual maturity for males and females were 6.0 and 7.0 cm TL, respectively. KF changed little throughout the year and GSI peaked in November to April, indicating the spawning season (GSImax = 15.0 in females, 2.0 in males). Mature females were dominant during the entire spawning season except in April. Mean total fecundity was 6700 ± 3500, ranging from 1860 to 19680. In addition, relative fecundity ranged from 190 to 1200 (mean 560 ± 235) in the Jamuna River. To ensure sustainable management of this species, the protection of mature individuals during the peak spawning season is highly recommended.  相似文献

The effect of the preserver on the length‐weight relationship and condition factor were estimated using 50 specimens of Tlaloc labialis; a small stream fish from the Grijalva River basin, México. They were measured at different stages of preservation: freshly collected, fixed in 10% formalin and preserved in 70% ethanol for over a 2 years period. All fish decreased in weight and condition factor, with very significant differences compared to the fresh material. The value of the coefficient (b) increased and stabilized from the second month of preservation in ethanol.  相似文献

An ontogenetic series of in-captivity bred Corydoras aeneus was used, in order to study the developmental changes in the external morphology. Allometric growth of several body parts was studied, attempting to reveal important steps in the species’ early life history. Based on the external morphology, the different stages during early development of C. aeneus were identified, according to Balon (Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada 32:1663–1670, 1975). After hatching, at a SL of 3.5 mm, the developmental state corresponded to an eleutherembryonic phase, followed by the protopterygiolarval phase (4.4–5.7 mm SL), the pterygiolarval phase (5.7–14.0 mm SL) and the juvenile period. In addition, an overall growth curve and inflexion points were determined. As such, ontogenetic changes in growth coefficients k (in SL = b age k ) were determined. Log transformed data were used for a piecewise linear regression method, as per regression spline smoothing procedures. This way, the growth curve could be divided into six different intervals of growth rate. Initially, the slope was 0.05 until 0.7 dph, then increasing to 0.18 until 4 dph, and 0.36 until 10 dph. After this, growth rate reached a maximum of 0.76 until 24 dph, slowed down to 0.47 until 37 dph and then finally again slowed down to 0.36. A similar growth analysis was also done on the different body parts and these results were compared to both morphological and data from literature. This led to the conclusion that the inflexion points found during the early development of C. aeneus matched the different key-events known in teleost early life history and development. The transition from endo- to exogenous feeding, at the moment a functional branchial respiratory system becomes increasingly important, was the first point at which allometries changed together with functional demands. A second, similar congruence occurred at the transition to the pterygiolarval phase, when priorities shift towards locomotory needs. A gene from Withania somnifera (winter cherry), encoding a highly stable chloroplastic Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD), was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant enzyme (specific activity of ~4,200 U mg−1) was purified and characterized. It retained ~90 and ~70% residual activities after 1 h at 80 and 95°C, respectively. At 95°C, thermal inactivation rate constant (K d) of the enzyme was 2.46 × 10−3 min−1 and half-life of heat inactivation was 4.68 h. The enzyme was stable against a broad pH range (2.5–11.0). It also showed a high degree of resistance to detergent, ethanol and protease digestion. This recombinant Cu/Zn SOD could therefore have useful applications.  相似文献

Morphometric analyses of marine pelagic fishes have generally been conducted for stock identification rather than for ecomorphological understanding. Many papers on stock identification of Trachurus japonicus reported polymorphisms in the Japanese Islands waters. However, none of them has found polymorphism in fish less than 100 mm standard length (SL), despite the environmental differences experienced by juvenile cohorts. The objective of this study was to detect ecomorphological polymorphism of juvenile T. japonicus (<100 mm SL) in Wakasa Bay, Japan, where multiple juvenile cohorts appear. From analyses of size frequency distributions and otolith microstructure, five cohorts were recognized in the bay from September 2003 to August 2004. We then compared 17 morphometric characters on body, fin, and otolith morphology, and found cohort-specific and roughly dimorphic pattern (a streamlined morph and a compressed morph). The dimorphism was markedly observed in 50–70 mm SL, and was regarded as specific to the juvenile stage by comparison with the senior dimorphisms (≥100 mm SL). Referring to the literatures on functional morphology, the streamlined morph and the compressed morph were considered to be suitable to body and caudal fin (BCF) periodic propulsion and BCF transient propulsion, respectively. The juvenile dimorphism was interpreted as adaptive in its developmental environments (i.e., ecomorphological dimorphism) by relating the functional differences to the inferred ecological differences: the streamlined morph is adaptive to feed on larval Engraulis japonicus in coastal waters, whereas the compressed morph is adaptive to associate with jellyfishes in offshore waters.  相似文献

The physiological response of larval Chironomus riparius was examined following direct transfer from freshwater (FW) to brackish water (BW; 20% seawater). Endpoints of hydromineral status (hemolymph Na+, Cl, and K+ levels, hemolymph pH, body water content, and whole body Na+/K+-ATPase and V-type H+-ATPase activity) were examined 1, 3, 5, 12 and 24 h following BW transfer. Larvae transferred from FW to FW served as a control. Hemolymph Na+ and Cl levels increased following BW transfer. Hemolymph pH was initially regulated, but significantly decreased after 24 h in BW. Changes in hemolymph ions were not caused by osmotic loss of water from the hemolymph, since larvae tightly regulated total body moisture content. Furthermore, salinity did not affect hemolymph K+. When larvae were transferred to BW, Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) activity did not significantly alter relative to FW control animals. In contrast, V-type H+-ATPase (VA) activity in C. riparius significantly decreased in BW. In FW-reared C. riparius, whole body NKA and VA activities were equivalent. However, in the isolated gut with intact Malpighian tubules of FW-reared C. riparius, VA activity was significantly greater than whole body while NKA activity was equivalent. This suggested that gut and/or Malpighian tubule VA activity contributes significantly to whole body VA activity and that a decline in whole body VA activity in BW may be closely linked to alterations in the physiology of gut and Malpighian tubule tissue. Taken together, data indicate that VA is important for ion uptake in FW and that the NKA does not play a major role in regulating ion homeostasis when larvae are acutely exposed to BW.  相似文献

Livestock grazing plays a significant role in maintaining grasslands and promoting animal production globally. To understand the livestock performance in sown pasture (SP) vs native pasture (NP) is important to ensure more effective grassland-livestock interactions with minimal environmental impact. A 2 (treatment) * 2 (period) Latin Square design experiment was conducted with 10 growing Hu sheep ♂ × thin-tailed Han sheep ♀ rams grazed perennially SP vs NP in an inland arid region of China. The objectives were to evaluate the effects of grazing management on nutrient digestibility, nitrogen (N) and energy utilisation and methane (CH4) emission. The N intake, N retained and energy intake (gross energy (GE), and digestible and metabolisable energy) of sheep grazing in SP were significantly increased compared with those grazing in NP. There were significant linear relationships between DM intake (DMI) (g/kg BW or g/kg BW0.75) or CH4 (g/kg BW or g/kg BW0.75) emissions and forage nutrient and GE concentrations within each grassland type. The linear regression analysis indicated that forage CP or ether extract concentration was a good predictor for DMI (g/kg BW or g/kg BW0.75) (R2 = 0.756 or 0.752), and CH4 emission could be predicted using forage nutrient and GE concentrations (R2 = 0.381–0.503). These results suggest that DMI and CH4 emissions per unit metabolic BW were accurately predicted by multiple-factor combinations of forage nutrients, including ether extract and CP paired with GE. The present output could provide useful information for the development of sustainable sheep grazing systems in the inland arid regions of the world.  相似文献

The growth rate, reproductive aspects, and natural mortality of chimaeras and ratfish are poorly known. In this study, life-history parameters for cockfish Callorhinchus callorhynchus (Holocephali—Callorhinchidae) are estimated, which is an important fish resource exploited in Chile. Specimens were sampled from the artisanal fishery captures, from November 2006 to November 2007. The standard length (SL) of males fluctuated between 20 and 62 cm, and between 21 and 70 cm for females. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated through length-frequency data analysis using MULTIFAN. The length-weight relationship and von Bertalanffy growth parameters were significantly different for males and females, as well as the length at 50% maturity. For males a model with 5 age-classes was the best, with asymptotic length L  = 52 cm SL, growth coefficient K = 0.473 yr−1, and age at length zero t 0 = −0.690 yrs. For females the best model was represented by 10 age-classes (L  = 70.3 cm SL, K = 0.193 yr−1, t 0 = −1.158 yrs) in the length-frequency data sets. Length at 50% maturity of males was estimated in 43.7 cm SL, and in 50.2 cm SL for females. The natural mortality rate fluctuated between 0.42 and 0.82 yr−1 for males and between 0.12 and 0.37 yr−1 for females, depending upon the method used. It is concluded that C. callorhynchus is a species with life-history parameters significantly different between males and females, and such differences should be taken into account in future population dynamics analysis.  相似文献

Preservation in 30% ethanol and freezing to a temperature of ?20 ± 2° C is an appropriate method for measurement of fish eggs, larvae and juveniles. Egg diameter of the common carp Cyprinus carpio increased insignificantly by 1·32% after preservation compared with live size. The total length (LT) of 1 day post‐hatching (dph) larvae as well as the standard length (LS) of 16 dph larvae of C. carpio increased significantly (2·95 and 1·50%, respectively) after preservation. Egg diameter as well as the LT of 1 dph larvae of barbel Barbus barbus increased significantly after preservation, by 1·74 and 1·96%, respectively over their original size. The standard length (LS) of 14 dph larvae of B. barbus as well as juveniles of B. barbus, crucian carp Carassius carassius, common nase Chondrostoma nasus and tench Tinca tinca decreased significantly after preservation (?0·56 to ?5·54%), whereas their body mass increased significantly (11·46–18·57%). Preserved eggs of C. carpio and B. barbus were hard, round and transparent. The larvae and juveniles of examined fishes, preserved in frozen ethanol, were straight, flexible and easily measurable after 60 days. Integrity of body surface and fins, as well as preservation of colours were much better in larvae or juveniles frozen and thawed only once than in specimens frozen and thawed thrice. Cooling in 30% ethanol to a temperature of 6 ± 2° C and freezing in water to a temperature of ?20 ± 2° C are not appropriate preservation methods for eggs and larvae of C. carpio (1 and 16 dph).  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative growth and sexual dimorphism in the hermit crab Clibanarius signatus. The evaluation was done with 955 specimens (494 males, 251 females, and 210 intersexes) captured in Persian Gulf (Iran) during January to December 2015. Animals were submitted to measurements related to weight (BW, total wet weight) and body size related to cephalic shield (SW, width; and SL, length) and propodus of both chelipeds (CPL, length; and CPW, width). Males were larger and heavier than females and intersexes. Both males and females showed a negative allometric growth for the SL–BW and SL–SW relationships, but a positive allometric growth to intersex specimens. To SL–CPL relationship, a negative allometric growth was confirmed in males and females independent of the laterality of the CPL, whereas a contrast was verified in intersexes, with a positive allometric growth occurred for both hands. To SL–CPW relationship, a negative allometric growth (b < 1) occurred in females, independent of the laterality of the CPW, while in males, a positive allometric pattern was confirmed. In intersexes, this relationship was positive except for the right CPW which was isometric. Sexual dimorphism was evident in Clibanarius signatus, with males being the largest and females the smallest specimens in the population.  相似文献

Polymorphisms of myostatin (MSTN) gene were investigated as a candidate marker for goat growth in 687 individuals by gene sequencing and polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism methods. Three potential genotypes (AA, AB and BB) of 5 bp indel (1,256 TTTTA/−) in 5′UTR were detected in four breeds. The polymorphism (CC, CD and DD) of substitution (1,388 T/A) in exon 1 was only segregating in Boer. Genotype AB resulted in significant increases in body weights at birth (BW0), 90 (BW90) and 300 (BW300) days of age, and birth body length compared to BB (P < 0.05). Whilst genotype CD contributed to heavier BW0 and BW90, and larger birth body height (BH) compared to CC (P < 0.05). Individuals either with AB or CD genotype also had greater values in other body sizes, although no significant differences appeared (P > 0.05). When in combination, the combined genotype ABCD displayed positive impacts on better growth traits in BW0, BW90, BW300, BH and BCG (P < 0.05). These results indicate that these markers in myostatin (MSTN) are associated with Boer growth and may be useful for marker assisted selection.  相似文献

This study provides length‐weight relationships (LWR) for three common marine species collected from Singapore, a small tropical island country in southeast Asia, where monthly collections using seine netting and fish trapping were performed at six sites from January to December 2010. The LWRs of these three species were BW = 0.0348 SL3.002 (n = 305, r2 = .9747) for Paracentropogon longispinis, BW = 0.0315 SL3.039 (n = 104, = .9798) for Trachicephalus uranoscopus and BW = 0.0651 SL3.021 (n = 70, r2 = .9601) for Synanceja horrida respectively.  相似文献

This study describes the reproductive biology of the Chinese minnow Hemiculterella sauvagei. The length‐weight relationship, sex ratio, spawning season, size at first maturity, and fecundity were analyzed based on 685 specimens collected from the Chishui River between July 2011 and July 2012. The relationship between standard length (SL) and body weight (BW) were estimated as BW = 2.14 × 10?4 × SL2.801 (R2 = 0.839; N = 413; P < 0.05) for females and BW = 1.31 × 10?4 × SL3.001 (R= 0.868; N = 272; P < 0.05) for males. The female to male sex ratio, 1.52 : 1, differed significantly from a 1 : 1 ratio. Females predominated in standard lengths >12 cm. Analyses of the monthly variation in the gonadosomatic index (GSI), the monthly proportions of macroscopic gonadal maturity, and the size distribution of oocytes consistently suggested a prolonged spawning season of H. sauvagei from March to August, with a peak from April to May. Logistic curves describing the relationship between proportion of maturity (Pr) at each length interval and standard length were estimated as Pr = 1/(1 + e26.867–0.306SL) (R= 0.999; N = 413; P < 0.05) for females and Pr = 1/(1 + e10.522–0.142SL) (R= 0.999; N = 272; P < 0.05) for males. Size at first maturity was estimated as 7.4 cm for males and 8.8 cm SL for females. Absolute fecundity varied from 563 to 5052, with a mean of 2413 ± 874 oocytes per ovary. The relative fecundity was estimated to be 41–299, with a mean of 171 ± 55 oocytes per ovary. The present study provides useful information for fishery management and resources conservation.  相似文献

Length‐weight (LWRs) and length–length (LLRs) relationships are reported for three fish species belonging to two families and two genera from the Heihe River, northwest China. Fish samples were collected using trap nets (mesh size 1 cm) in May and December of 2016, and April and October 2017. Standard length (SL) and total length (TL) for each individual were measured to the nearest 0.1 cm by digital slide caliper and each body weight (BW) was measured to an accuracy of 0.1 g using digital balance. The b‐values for LWRs varied from 2.580 to 3.164 (r2 > .956). The results further indicated that the LLRs were highly correlated (r> .991; < .01). This study presents the first references on LWRs for Gymnocypris chilianensis and Triplophysa hsutschouensis, and LLRs for G. chilianensis, Triplophysa leptosoma and Thsutschouensis. This biometric data and their relationships are relevant to the management and conservation of local fishes and fisheries.  相似文献

We investigated the breeding season and size at maturation and described the morphology of newly released Hippichthys spicifer larvae collected from the estuaries of four rivers on northern Okinawa-jima Island, southern Japan. The minimum size of brooding males was 108 mm standard length (SL). The smallest mature female, as estimated from gonadosomatic index (GSI) analysis and histological observations of gonads, was about 100 mm SL. Histological observations showed the gonad of H. spicifer to be a cylindrical tube with a sequential pattern of follicle development and a single germinal ridge. We surmised that the breeding season is year-round, as shown by monthly changes in female GSI, gonad histology, and monthly changes in the occurrence of brooding males. The monthly changes in female GSI and proportions of brooding males were small in winter. The number of eggs in the male brood pouch ranged from 114 to 1,764 (604.4 ± 322.8, mean ± standard deviation; n = 25). The SL of the released larvae was 9.9 mm. All fins except the pectoral fins were formed, the body was elongated, and the developmental stage was similar to that of other Urophori species. The smallest individual present in the mangrove areas of estuaries was 78.0 mm SL.  相似文献

Length-weight relationship (LWR) for 39 freshwater fish species captured in the Catalão Lake, a floodplain area at the confluence of the Amazonas and Negro rivers is presented. LWRs were calculated based on fish sampled over 18 years (1999–2017) using a set of ten gill nets with different mesh sizes, monthly immersed in water for 24-hr with 6-hr interval catches. Measurements were done for standard length (SL – 0.1 cm precision) and total weight (TW – 0.01 g precision). The LWRs were calculated by the linear regression of natural log-transformed SL and TW data: TW = a × SLb. All statistical analyses were performed with R software. From all species considered, 32 are new LWR records for the international literature as well as for the Amazonian ichythyofauna; additional records expand the known size range for seven species.  相似文献
