Under conditions of a choice between a high-valuable delayed and a low-valuable immediate food rewards, cats were divided into 3 groups on the basis of their individual strategy of behavior: (1) choosing predominantly the high-valuable reward because of inhibition of the instrumental response (capable of self-control), (2) choosing predominantly the immediate low-valuable reward (impulsive), and (3) with a mixed pattern of reactions (ambivalent). Coherent activity of nucleus accumbens neurons which was a characteristic of interactions between nearby cells was assessed by the method of crosscorrelation. It was found that the total number of interneuronal interactions in cats capable of self-control exceeded that displayed by impulsive cats. In those rare cases when impulsive cats performed long-latency responses not typical of them, the number of interneuronal interactions was the same as during the self-control behavior. In animals of different groups, the number of interneuronal interactions was higher during erroneous responses as compared to correctly performed reactions. The results suggest an important role of systemic activity of neurons in the nucleus accumbens in the organization of the long-latency reaction pattern, characteristic of self-control behavior.  相似文献

It has been argued that one important variable that hampers research on self-control strategies is the absence of a working definition of self-control. Part of the difficulty involves the ambiguous and self-reflexive nature of the term itself, and part of the difficulty involves tautological imprecision equating the construct and definition of self-control with the effects of a self-control strategy. In order to begin to bring order to what has heretofore been a linguistic morass, an effort was made to assess individuals' views of self-control and then to perform a content analysis of the different aspects and dimensions actually embedded within these views. This study offered partial confirmation for six previously identified dimensions: choice, responsibility, awareness, discipline, skill, and goal. These dimensions provide us with a beginning phenomenological framework for assessing how individuals view self-control, and thereby help refine the position endorsed by Mahoney and Arnkoff (1979) that “self-control is a social label which is differentially applied to some behavior patterns.” Further, individuals were requested to list positive and negative aspects of self-control, in order to assess whether, as Mahoney and Arnkoff suggest, self-control is necessarily applied to behavior perceived as (a) being socially appropriate or desirable and (b) originating from noble ideals. The study found that there were both positively and negatively valenced aspects thought to be associated with self-control, and that the mention of a certain dimension of self-control (discipline) was found to be significantly correlated with a specific negatively valenced view (rigidity). The study concludes with implications for developing a working definition of self-control, and with guidelines and suggestions for future research.  相似文献

Research shows that self-control is resource limited and there is a gradual weakening in consecutive self-control task performance akin to muscle fatigue. A body of evidence suggests that the resource is glucose and consuming glucose reduces this effect. This study examined the effect of glucose on performance in the antisaccade task - which requires self-control through generating a voluntary eye movement away from a target - following self-control exertion in the Stroop task. The effects of motivation and individual differences in self-control were also explored. In a double-blind design, 67 young healthy adults received a 25g glucose or inert placebo drink. Glucose did not enhance antisaccade performance following self-control exertion in the Stroop task. Motivation however, predicted performance on the antisaccade task; more specifically high motivation ameliorated performance decrements observed after initial self-control exertion. In addition, individuals with high levels of self-control performed better on certain aspects of the antisaccade task after administration of a glucose drink. The results of this study suggest that the antisaccade task might be a powerful paradigm, which could be used as a more objective measure of self-control. Moreover, the results indicate that level of motivation and individual differences in self-control should be taken into account when investigating deficiencies in self-control following prior exertion.  相似文献

Six cats were subjected to the procedure of appetitive instrumental conditioning (with light as a conditioned stimuls) by the method of the "active choice" of reinforcement quality. Short-delay conditioned bar-press responses were rewarded with bread-meat mixture, and the delayed responses were reinforced by meat. The animals differed in behavior strategy: four animals preferred the bar-pressing with a long delay (the so-called "self-control" group), and two cats preferred the bar-pressing with a short delay (the so-called "impulsive" group). Multiunit activity in the frontal cortex and hippocampus (CA3) was recorded via chronically implanted nichrome wire semimicroelectrodes. An interaction between the neighboring neurons in the frontal cortex and hippocampus (within local neural networks) and between the neurons of the frontal cortex and hippocampus (distributed neural networks in frontal-hippocampal and hippocampal-frontal directions) was evaluated by means of statistical crosscorrelation analysis of spike trains. Crosscorrelations between neuronal spike trains in the delay range of 0-100 ms were explored. It was shown that the number of crosscorrelations between the neuronal discharges both in the local and distributed networks was significantly higher in the "self-control" cats. It was suggested that the local and distributed neural networks of the frontal cortex and hippocampus are involved in the system of brain structures which determine the behavioral strategy of animals in the "self-control" group.  相似文献

Summary Although luteinizing hormone (LH) alone stimulates ovarian interstitial cells cultured in serum-free medium to synthesize large amounts of androgens, there seem to be additional factors in vivo that modulate the time course and magnitude of the cellular responses to LH. In an attempt to develop a more nearly physiologic cell culture model, lipoproteins, insulin, and insulinlike growth factor-I (IGF-I) were added to the serum-free medium. The effects of these modifications on androgen biosynthesis by dispersed cells from ovaries of hypophysectomized immature rats cultured in 96-well tissue culture plates were examined. A saturating dose of LH stimulated a 25-fold increase in androsterone synthesis at 2 d, which decreased at 4 and 6 d. Addition of human high density (hHDL) or human low density lipoprotein (hLDL) caused a 2.5-fold increase in LH-stimulated androsterone synthesis. Cells were approximately twice as sensitive to hHDL (ED50=5.5±0.5 μg cholesterol/ml) compared to hLDL (ED50=9.1±1.1 μg cholesterol/ml). Surprisingly, rat HDL caused only a 40% increase in LH-stimulated androsterone synthesis. When insulin alone was added to cells cultured with a saturating dose of LH, there was a 2.8-fold increase in androsterone synthesis. Addition of hHDL and insulin together caused a synergistic increase in LH-stimulated androsterone synthesis. In contrast to hHDL, which did not change the time course of LH-stimulated androsterone production, insulin prolonged maximal LH-stimulated androsterone synthesis at 4 and 6 d. Inasmuch as the ED50 for insulin action (1.3±0.1 μg/ml) was supraphysiologic, the effects of IGF-I on LH-stimulated androgen synthesis were examined. IGF-I mimicked all of the effects of insulin, but at a physiologic concentration (ED50=2.5±0.3 ng/ml). Ovarian cells cultured in serum-free medium supplemented with hHDL and insulin or IGF-I exhibit responses that closely approximate the physiologic responses observed in vivo. These results suggest that lipoproteins and IGF-I are important physiologic stimulators of ovarian theca-interstitial cell androgen biosynthesis which, when added to the serum-free medium, make the cellular responses in this in vitro model more nearly approximate the responses in vivo. Appetitive instrumental conditioned reflexes on light (CS+) were formed in six cats by the method of "active choice" of quality of reinforcement; bread-meat mixture was given after short-delay conditioned bar-press responses, and the delayed responses were rewarded by meat. The animals differed in choice behavior strategy: "self-control", "ambivalent", "impulsive". The multiunit activity in the frontal cortex and hippocampus (CA3) was recorded. Cross-correlation analysis was used for estimation of correlation of activities in neuronal pairs in the frontal cortex and hippocampus (distributed frontal-hippocampal networks) and pairs within the same structure (frontal and hippocampal local neuronal networks). It was shown that the number of cross-correlations between the discharges of neurons both in the local and distributed networks was significantly higher in "self-control" cats. Under conditions of systemic administration of antagonists of muscarinic central cholinoreceptors (trihexyphenidyl and scopolamine), the bar-press conditioning impaired, the number of direct interneuronal connections decreased, and the number of externally synchronized correlations ("common input") significantly increased. The results suggest that the local and distributed neural networks of the frontal cortex and hippocampus are involved in the system of brain structures that determine the behavioral strategy of "self control".  相似文献

The main aim of our study was to examine whether there was a relationship between psychological characteristics such as self-efficacy, self-control and chronotype as well as procrastination on the one hand and sleep problems on the other. There were 315 young adults aged between 18 and 27 years (M = 20.57). We used the General Procrastination Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), Brief Self-Control Scale, the Composite Scale of Morningness (CSM) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Our results indicated that low self-efficacy, low self-control and eveningness were positive predictors of procrastination. The reciprocal relationship exists between procrastination and sleep problems. Procrastination positively contributed to sleep problems, whereas sleep problems were a negative predictor of procrastination.  相似文献

Experiments were performed to determine whether physiologic stimulation of carotid chemoreceptors produces different responses in blood vessels of skin and muscle. Carotid chemoreceptors of anesthetized dogs were stimulated with hypoxic and hypercapnic blood and responses were observed in the isolated, perfused gracilis muscle and hindpaw. Chemoreceptor stimulation produced vasoconstriction in the muscle and vadodilatation in the paw (a predominantly cutaneous vascular bed). Responses to hypoxia without hypercapnic acidosis tended to be less pronounced. The study indicates that physiologic stimulation of carotid chemoreceptors produces contrasting responses in different vascular beds.  相似文献

Electromagnetic fields have been demonstrated to elicit thermoregulatory responses, neuroen-docrine, neurochemical modulations, and behavioral reactions. These physiologic regulatory processes are exquisitely tuned, interrelated functions that constitute sensitive indicators of organismic responses to radiofrequency energy absorption (the radio frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum includes as one part microwaves). Assessment of the integration and correlation of these functions relative to the thermal inputs and homeokinetic reactions of the individual subjected to radiofrequency energy should permit differentiation between potential hazards that might compromise the individual's ability to maintain normal physiologic function and effects that are compensated by physiologic redundancy.  相似文献

We studied serial plasma catecholamine levels in healthy newborn sheep over the first ten days of life. The results show that plasma norepinephrine values in newborn sheep are 3-4 fold higher, and plasma epinephrine values are two-fold higher than values in term fetal sheep. These elevations are sustained over the first 10 days of life. Cardiovascular (heart rate and blood pressure) and metabolic parameters (glucose and free fatty acids) are also significantly elevated above fetal levels. We performed graded catecholamine infusions in newborn animals and adult ewes to determine the minimum plasma catecholamine concentrations necessary for discernible physiologic effects. In response to step-wise increases in epinephrine or norepinephrine infusion rates, there were immediate increases in blood pressure and other physiologic responses. This pattern was seen in both newborn and adult animals, and differed from previous observations in fetal sheep where log-linear, dose response curves characteristic of a threshold response were seen. These results suggest that during the first two weeks of life plasma catecholamine levels are elevated above the threshold value for physiologic responses. These sustained elevations in circulating catecholamines are important in the maintenance of physiologic homeostasis.  相似文献

Previous efforts, on a theoretical/model building level, refined the construct “self-control” into four quadrants: (1) positive assertive (active control), (2) positive yielding (letting-go control), (3) negative assertive (over-control), and (4) negative yielding (too little control). To test the discreteness of the four quadrants, 706 individuals, the majority in health and healing professions, from nine cities across the United States, responded to prompt words designed to assess each quadrant. A factor analysis provided partial concurrent validation, and the results revealed information about the semantic structure of self-control, as well as personal characteristics associated with self-control. Further, mean tabulations showed not only cultural bias (i.e., high self-control was associated almost exclusively with Quadrant 1, but also sex role bias (i.e., low self-control for a man was most often associated with Quadrant 3, negative assertiveness, and for a woman was most often associated with Quadrant 4 negative yielding). Clinical implications of these findings in terms of developing a self-control assessment inventory for matching self-control strategy to an individual with a particular clinical problem are discussed, and guidelines and suggestions for further research are offered.  相似文献

The capacity for self-control is critical to adaptive functioning, yet our knowledge of the underlying processes and mechanisms is presently only inchoate. Theoretical work in economics has suggested a model of self-control centering on two key assumptions: (1) a division within the decision-maker between two ‘selves’ with differing preferences; (2) the idea that self-control is intrinsically costly. Neuroscience has recently generated findings supporting the ‘dual-self’ assumption. The idea of self-control costs, in contrast, has remained speculative. We report the first independent evidence for self-control costs. Through a neuroimaging meta-analysis, we establish an anatomical link between self-control and the registration of cognitive effort costs. This link predicts that individuals who strongly avoid cognitive demand should also display poor self-control. To test this, we conducted a behavioral experiment leveraging a measure of demand avoidance along with two measures of self-control. The results obtained provide clear support for the idea of self-control costs.  相似文献

Abundant behavioral evidence suggests that the ability to self-control is limited, and that any exertion of self-control will increase the likelihood of subsequent self-control failures. Here we investigated the neural correlates underlying the aftereffects of self-control on future control processes using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). An initial act of self-control (suppressing emotions) impaired subsequent performance in a second task requiring control (Stroop task). On the neural level, increased activity during emotion suppression was followed by a relative decrease in activity during the Stroop task in a cluster in the right lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), an area engaged in the effortful implementation of control. There was no reliable evidence for reduced activity in the medial frontal cortex (MFC) including the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), which is involved in conflict detection processes and has previously also been implicated in self-control. Follow-up analyses showed that the detected cluster in the right lateral PFC and an area in the MFC were involved in both the emotion suppression task and the Stroop task, but only the cluster in the right lateral PFC showed reduced activation after emotion suppression during the Stroop task. Reduced activity in lateral prefrontal areas relevant for the implementation of control may be a critical consequence of prior self-control exertion if the respective areas are involved in both self-control tasks.  相似文献

Recent research demonstrates that response inhibition—a core executive function—may subserve self-regulation and self-control. However, it is unclear whether response inhibition also predicts self-control in the multifaceted, high-level phenomena of social decision-making. Here we examined whether electrophysiological indices of response inhibition would predict self-control in a social context. Electroencephalography was recorded as participants completed a widely used Go/NoGo task (the cued Continuous Performance Test). Participants then interacted with a partner in an economic exchange game that requires self-control. Results demonstrated that greater NoGo-Anteriorization and larger NoGo-P300 peak amplitudes—two established electrophysiological indices of response inhibition—both predicted more self-control in this social game. These findings support continued integration of executive function and self-regulation and help extend prior research into social decision-making processes.  相似文献

This study investigated the efficacy of manipulation of cognitive self-control expectancy in EMG biofeedback training. It was predicted that a treatment procedure, which includes a positive-cognitive stage that establishes and reinforces a positive self-control belief system and also includes a training stage in EMG biofeedback, will be more effective in achieving a reduction in EMG activity than a treatment procedure which includes a negative-cognitive stage and which also includes ambiguous features prior to training and a treatment approach solely concerned with training. The study consisted of four groups with 10 subjects in each. In one group, expectation for inner control ability was created prior to actual training in reducing EMG activity. In the second group, expectation for negative self-control ability was created prior to EMG training. The third group only underwent the actual training in EMG. The fourth group served as a control group. The results show that the positive-cognitive self-control group was significantly more effective in reducing muscle activity than the other groups.  相似文献

A correlation between physiologic and behavioral responses to emotional stress and agonistic conflict (triad model), as well as ideas of autonomic-humoral support of subsequent activity suggest that motor activity and situational aggressive behavior are essential final stages of stress reaction and, therefore, mechanisms of adaptation. Failure in final the stage of adaptive response causes mobilization changes to be directed against the host organism itself. This phenomenon forms the basis for psychosomatic disorders. Aggression seems to be an adaptive response not only from ethologic, but from physiologic point of view as well. It has some elements of homeostatic control (together with non-homeostatic functions). Homeostatic role of aggression may be in "elimination" of mobilization metabolic changes caused by stress reaction and physical activity by means of expressive emotional response. Aggression as a non-homeostatic factor has an ethologic function.  相似文献

Paternal behavior greatly affects the survival, social development, and cognitive development of infants. Nevertheless, little research has been done to assess how paternal experience modifies the behavioral characteristics of fathers, including fear and stress responses to a novel environment. We investigated long-term behavioral and physiologic effects of parental experience in mice (Peromyscus californicus) and how this response activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (as measured by corticosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone [DHEA] levels) and interacts with anxiety-related behaviors. Three groups of adult males were tested--fathers exposed to pups, virgins exposed to pups, and virgins never exposed to pups--in 2 environments designed to elicit anxiety response: an open field with a novel object placed in the center and a closed cage containing a sample of a component of fox feces. Behavioral responses were measured by using traditional methods (duration and frequency) and behavioral-chain sequences. Results indicated that paternal experience significantly modifies a male mouse's behavioral and physiologic responses to stress-provoking stimuli. Compared with inexperienced male mice, experienced male mice had a significant decrease in the occurrence of incomplete behavioral chains during the exposure to the novel object, an index of reduced stress. Further, even moderate pup exposure induced behavioral modifications in virgin male mice. These behavioral responses were correlated with changes in corticosterone and DHEA levels. Together, these data provide evidence that interactions between male mice and offspring may have mutually beneficial long-term behavioral and physiologic effects.  相似文献

The current research tested the hypothesis that individuals engaged in long-term efforts to limit food intake (e.g., individuals with high eating restraint) would have reduced capacity to regulate eating when self-control resources are limited. In the current research, body mass index (BMI) was used as a proxy for eating restraint based on the assumption that individuals with high BMI would have elevated levels of chronic eating restraint. A preliminary study (Study 1) aimed to provide evidence for the assumed relationship between eating restraint and BMI. Participants (N = 72) categorized into high or normal-range BMI groups completed the eating restraint scale. Consistent with the hypothesis, results revealed significantly higher scores on the weight fluctuation and concern for dieting subscales of the restraint scale among participants in the high BMI group compared to the normal-range BMI group. The main study (Study 2) aimed to test the hypothesized interactive effect of BMI and diminished self-control resources on eating behavior. Participants (N = 83) classified as having high or normal-range BMI were randomly allocated to receive a challenging counting task that depleted self-control resources (ego-depletion condition) or a non-depleting control task (no depletion condition). Participants then engaged in a second task in which required tasting and rating tempting cookies and candies. Amount of food consumed during the taste-and-rate task constituted the behavioral dependent measure. Regression analyses revealed a significant interaction effect of these variables on amount of food eaten in the taste-and-rate task. Individuals with high BMI had reduced capacity to regulate eating under conditions of self-control resource depletion as predicted. The interactive effects of BMI and self-control resource depletion on eating behavior were independent of trait self-control. Results extend knowledge of the role of self-control in regulating eating behavior and provide support for a limited-resource model of self-control.  相似文献

The limited resource or strength model of self-control posits that the use of self-regulatory resources leads to depletion and poorer performance on subsequent self-control tasks. We conducted four studies (two with community samples, two with young adult samples) utilizing a frequently used depletion procedure (crossing out letters protocol) and the two most frequently used dependent measures of self-control (handgrip perseverance and modified Stroop). In each study, participants completed a baseline self-control measure, a depletion or control task (randomized), and then the same measure of self-control a second time. There was no evidence for significant depletion effects in any of these four studies. The null results obtained in four attempts to replicate using strong methodological approaches may indicate that depletion has more limited effects than implied by prior publications. We encourage further efforts to replicate depletion (particularly among community samples) with full disclosure of positive and negative results.  相似文献

Research has shown that viewing stimuli that induce mating or sex motivation can push men towards greater impulsivity, a manifestation of lower self-control. Recent advances in research on the connection between self-control and moral behavior indicate that low self-control is associated with increased dishonesty. From an evolutionary perspective, when mating motivation is activated, men may behave in dishonest ways by projecting characteristics in line with women's mate preferences to enhance their sexual attractiveness. We tested the possibility that exposure to pictures of sexually appealing women would engender lower self-control, leading men to behave dishonestly. The results showed that a state of lower self-control was observed in males who viewed women rated high on sexual attractiveness but not in males who viewed women rated low on sexual attractiveness or in females who viewed men (Experiment 1). Compared with control participants, male participants exposed to pictures of sexy women were less likely to return excess money received for participating (Experiment 2) and more likely to cheat in a matrix task (Experiments 3 and 4). State self-control mediated the link between exposure to sexual stimuli and dishonest behavior in men (Experiments 2 and 4). For men whose mating motivation is heightened by exposure to sexual stimuli, dishonesty appears to be a tactic for projecting characteristics preferred by women (e.g., large economic resources).  相似文献
