We used x-ray computed tomography to study the elaboration of nest structures in small sand-filled nest boxes by Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) colonies composed of 10, 100, and 1000 workers. The pattern of nest growth was consistent with a process of density-dependent stimulation of excavation, which subsided as nests grew and the density of digging stimuli declined. Thus, nest excavation would be auto-regulating, and final nest size should be adjusted to colony size. We found that excavation rates and final nest sizes increased with colony size, but were not tenfold greater in 1000-worker colonies than in 100-worker colonies. In the largest colonies, the internal surface area scaled allometrically with volume, so that more surface was obtained relative to volume excavated as the nest grew. Although the gross features of Argentine ant nests, such as total size, seem explicable by a simple, self-organized regulatory process, other features of the nest architecture will require further investigation. Summary The plant species composition of the chaff piles of three species of harvester ant (Messor spp.) and the contribution of the chaff to the organic pool were studied from August 1985 to July 1987. There were distinct differences in the plant species composition of the chaff of the three species. We attribute this to the different diets of the three species, which reflect the relative sizes of their individuals and their foraging strategies. The amount of chaff accumulated varies greatly between the three species (Messor rugossus: 127–196 g · ha–1 · y–1;Messor ebeninus: 2823–4437 g · ha–1 · y–1;Messor arenarius: 2165–2535 g · ha–1 · y–1), although the number of nests per hectare is virtually the same. We found that the amount of chaff is related to the rate of activity and the size of the individuals of each of the three ant species. The total chaff accumulated during the study period was 19.2 kg · ha–1, which is an important contribution to the organic matter in the soil in the Negev desert ecosystem.  相似文献

Invasive ants often displace native ants, and published studies that focus on these interactions usually emphasize interspecific competition for food resources as a key mechanism responsible for the demise of native ants. Although less well documented, nest raiding by invasive ants may also contribute to the extirpation of native ants. In coastal southern California, for example, invasive Argentine ants (Linepithema humile) commonly raid colonies of the harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex subnitidus. On a seasonal basis the frequency and intensity of raids vary, but raids occur only when abiotic conditions are suitable for both species. In the short term these organized attacks cause harvester ants to cease foraging and to plug their nest entrances. In unstaged, one-on-one interactions between P. subnitidus and L. humile workers, Argentine ants behaved aggressively in over two thirds of all pair-wise interactions, despite the much larger size of P. subnitidus. The short-term introduction of experimental Argentine ant colonies outside of P. subnitidus nest entrances stimulated behaviors similar to those observed in raids: P. subnitidus decreased its foraging activity and increased the number of nest entrance workers (many of which labored to plug their nest entrances). Raids are not likely to be the result of competition for food. As expected, P. subnitidus foraged primarily on plant material (85% of food items obtained from returning foragers), but also collected some dead insects (7% of food items). In buffet-style choice tests in which we offered Argentine ants food items obtained from P. subnitidus, L. humile only showed interest in dead insects. In other feeding trials L. humile consistently moved harvester ant brood into their nests (where they were presumably consumed) but showed little interest in freshly dead workers. The raiding behavior described here obscures the distinction between interspecific competition and predation, and may well play an important role in the displacement of native ants, especially those that are ecologically dissimilar to L. humile with respect to diet. Summary The Southeast Asian antTetraponera sp. nearattenuata F. Smith inhabits internodes of large bamboo species that it shares with symbiotic pseudococcids. It finds access to this nesting habitat via small holes made by wood-boring insects. During heavy rain, runoff water collects in these punctured internodes. TheTetraponera workers remove the water by ingesting it, walking to the entrance hole, and regurgitating it to the outside. In this way, they 1) reduce the danger of colony members drowing, 2) enable their symbionts to feed also on the internode floor, and 3) prevent excessive growth of microbes in the nest.  相似文献

We assessed temporal and spatial patterns of nest site use in the cavity dwelling ant, Myrmica punctiventris in a well-studied temperate forest site in central New York State. We evaluated changes in nest site use by repeatedly censusing the ants inhabiting artificial nests (hollow dowels) for three consecutive growing seasons. We confirm a shift towards more polydomy in this population of M. punctiventris, first reported by DeHeer et al. (2001), but extend these findings by demonstrating that this shift has occurred gradually over several years. We are unable to determine if this polydomy is seasonal or year round. We explore various explanations for the occurrence of polydomy and suggest that long-term changes in sex allocation are indirectly driving the shift in nesting strategies. A yeast strain (CBS 8902) was isolated from the nest of a leaf-cutting ant and was shown to be related to Cryptococcus humicola. Sequencing of the D1/D2 region of the 26S ribosomal DNA and physiological characterization revealed a separate taxonomic position. A novel species named Cryptococcus haglerorum is proposed to accommodate strain CBS 8902 that assimilates n-hexadecane and several benzene compounds. Physiological characteristics distinguishing the novel species from some other members of the C. humicola complex are presented. The phylogenetic relationship of these strains to species of the genus Trichosporon Behrend is discussed. Summary. In central Mexico, the ant Brachymyrmex obscurior Forel feeds on nectar produced by extrafloral nectaries of Acacia pennatula (Schlecht. & Cham.) Benth. However, no studies have determined whether the ants visitation is related to plant nectar availability and whether ants protect A. pennatula from herbivory. The objectives of this 2-yr study (2000–2001) were to assess whether seasonal changes in ant visitation coincide with extrafloral nectar productivity in A. pennatula and to determine whether ants protect the plant. At the end of the dry season (April–June) B. obscurior was the only ant species on A. pennatula and extrafloral nectar production is limited to this period. Exclusion experiments, performed at the end of the dry season showed that A. pennatula did not receive a protective benefit when visited by ants. Branches with ants and branches where ants are excluded had similar numbers of the nonmyrmecophile leafhopper Sibovia sp. which was the only herbivore observed under natural conditions.Received 24 March 2004; revised 4 September 2004; accepted 8 September 2004.  相似文献

A method to estimate the number of workers in Myrmica ant nests on abandoned meadows was developed based on removal of workers. Ant workers have a tendency to climb up on wooden sticks put into their nests, therefore, assuming that the number of workers removed on sticks is related to the total number of workers within the nests, regression models for Myrmica rubra, M. ruginodis and M. scabrinodis may be built. We used a general regression model to perform a backward stepwise elimination of explanatory variables. These were the number of workers removed on sticks, temperature at the nest and site (a categorical variable). In case of each species the final model contained only the number of workers removed as a significant variable. The method is apparently non-destructive as we did not observe decreased survival of nests surveyed as compared to control nests. The method can be a very useful tool in population studies of ants as well as in biodiversity projects, where ants are used as bioinidcators. This study analyses some aspects of the role of alloethism in the networks of patrolling workers of a polymorphic ant species (Tapinoma nigerrimum) in the nest surroundings. We focus on the analysis of movement and distribution patterns of different-sized individuals, and their relationship to the potential transfer of information between each other via contacts during patrolling activities. Our results suggest that small workers are potentially more efficient in these kind of activities (information discovery and transfer), because they contact each other more than could be expected by a random process based on their proportions and, also, because their deduced energetic expenditure per unit of information found or transferred is lower than that of large workers. These differences in the contacts between patrolling ants for small and large workers cannot be explained by their movement patterns (velocity, time spend in movement, turning angles), which do not differ between both groups but, rather, seem to be a consequence of their resulting distribution patterns (overdispersed for large ants and random for small ones).  相似文献

An authentic soluble metallo-protein nucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase (ELNPP) was purified to homogeneity from Euphorbia characias latex. The native protein had a molecular mass of 80 ± 5 kDa and was shown to be formed by two apparently identical subunits, each containing 1 Ca2+ and 1 Mg2+ ion. Whereas Mg2+ was shown to be strongly bound to the enzyme, Ca2+ was easily removed by treatment with EDTA. Ca2+-demetalated enzyme was shown to be almost totally inactive and the activity was fully restored incubating the demetalated ELNPP with Ca2+ ions. ELNPP exhibited hydrolytic activities toward pyrophosphate/phosphodiester bonds of a broad range of substrates and very efficiently hydrolyzed the artificial substrate thymidine 5′-monophosphate 4-nitrophenyl ester generating 4-nitrophenolate as a final product, and it has been used for enzyme kinetic experiments. ELNPP represents the first example of a nucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase enzyme purified from the latex of a plant belonging to the large genus Euphorbia.  相似文献

In social insects, interactions among individuals are important in colony organisation because they can be used in decision making. During trophallaxis in ants, antennal and foreleg contacts between both partners are established. It has been suggested that a modulatory communication channel could be involved in such contacts, but it remains undemonstrated. The aim of this work was to find variables plausible to be encoded in such contacts and quantify the consequent changes in the tactile stimulation the food-donor ant receives. We recorded nectar transference between pairs of workers in experimental arenas once one of them had returned from collecting sucrose solution (15 or 40%w/w), with different situations of colony’s sugar deprivation. The frequency of antennal strokes that the food-donor ant received on her head depended on both the colony’s sugar-deprivation and the concentration, the latter showed differences within 3–5 deprivation days. Antennal and foreleg movements of the food-receiver increase with increasing level of colony’s carbohydrate deprivation, as well as with increasing concentration of the transferred food. Not only does this study reopen an interesting question, but it gives evidence that variables related to the appetitive context are indeed encoded in the tactile stimulation during the trophallaxis as well. Consequently, they have the effective potentiality to play a communicational role in the organization of colony activities. This study examines the dispersal system of Guapira opposita in a tropical sandy rainforest in southeast Brazil. Guapira trees produce small fruits with a high protein content (28.4%) and low lipid content (0.3%), and the plant is primarily dispersed by birds. Mature fruits of G. opposita can fall spontaneously with the pulp intact, or be dropped by birds with bits of pulp attached. In either case, ground-dwelling ants rapidly remove the fruits to their nest (93% after 12 h). The ponerine ants Odontomachus chelifer and Pachycondyla striata are the main seed vectors among the ants, and together account for 56% (20 of 36) of the ant-fruit interactions recorded on the forest floor. Individual workers of O. chelifer and P. striata transport single fruits to their nests. Bits of pulp are fed to larvae and worker nestmates, and intact seeds are discarded outside the nest. Germination success in Guapira is higher for cleaned seeds (pulp removed) than for seeds coated by pulp. Guapira seedlings and juveniles are more frequent close to Odontomachus nests than at sites without such nests. Soil samples from Odontomachus nests had greater penetrability, and higher concentrations of P, K, and Ca than random soil samples. Field experiments suggest that the association between G. opposita seedlings and O. chelifer nests can potentially render the plant some protection against herbivores. Results indicate that fruit displacement by ponerine ants play an important role in the biology of G. opposita seeds and seedlings in the sandy forest, and illustrate the complex nature of the dispersal ecology of tropical tree species.  相似文献

Field observations of a walkingstick,Calynda bicuspis, reveal that its eggs are rapidly discovered and transported by the ponerine ant,Ectatomma ruidum during both dry and wet seasons in Costa Rica. The importance of the egg capitulum in inducing ant transport was established by presenting eggs from which the capitulum had been removed or sealed. Untreated eggs, including those initially taken into nests, were moved approximately 1 m and dropped on the surface of the ground, unlike the eggs of several Old World walkingstick species which ants bury. High rates of oviposition following the termination of prolonged copulatory periods appear to lead to the clumping of eggs, perhaps increasing their susceptibility to a specialist egg-parasitoid,Amisega sp. Abstract.  1. Grassland fragmentation is expected to influence the abundance of different invertebrate species to a different extent. Fragmentation-related effects are of particular importance in species that interact with many other species.
2. The density and spatial distribution of nests of 15 ant species in experimentally fragmented calcareous grasslands at three sites in the Northern Swiss Jura mountains were examined. Fragments of different size (0.25 m2, 2.25 m2, and 20.25 m2) were isolated by a 5-m wide strip of frequently mown vegetation. Control plots of corresponding size were situated in adjacent undisturbed grassland.
3. Three years after initiation of the experiment, ant nest density did not differ between fragments and control plots. Six years after initiation of the experiment, however, ant nest density and forager abundance were higher in large fragments than in large control plots. Ant nests tended to occur more frequently along the edge of fragments than in the core area. Persistence time of nests of the most abundant species, Lasius paralienus , tended to be shorter in fragments than in control plots. Furthermore, persistence time was longer in nests situated close to the fragment edge than in nests in the core area.
4. Effects on nest density, edge effects on the spatial distribution of nests, and the relationships between nest density and environmental factors were more pronounced when only nests of L. paralienus were considered. The implications of these findings for plant and other invertebrate species are discussed.  相似文献

Carpenter ants (genus Camponotus) have mutualistic, endosymbiotic bacteria of the genus Blochmannia whose main contribution to their hosts is alimentary. It was also recently demonstrated that they play a role in improving immune function as well. In this study, we show that treatment with an antibiotic produces a physiological response inducing an increase in both the quantity of cuticular hydrocarbons and in the melanization of the cuticle probably due to a nutritive and immunological deficit. We suggest that this is because it enhances the protection the cuticle provides from desiccation and also from invasions by pathogens and parasites. Nevertheless, the cuticular hydrocarbon profile is not modified by the antibiotic treatment, which indicates that nestmate recognition is not modified.  相似文献

Messor barbarus is a Mediterranean harvester ant that constructs physically defined trunk routes on the ground to connect nest entrances with foraging areas. Some responses of these trunk routes to plant density (and therefore resource abundance) were analyzed by testing the preferential allocation of different parts (trunk route ends, segments and branching points) in a patchy environment. Maps of grass density in four categories and Messor barbarus trunk routes were compiled for a Mediterranean pasture in Central Spain over four consecutive years. The proportions of the density categories in each year were used to calculate random expected frequencies of the trunk route points and the predominance of higher or lower grass densities. Trunk route ends discriminate and selectively reach patches with a greater abundance of resources in all study years. Branching points are also allocated preferentially in areas with higher vegetation density, but only in years with a predominance of the higher categories of grass density. In these years, the colonies of Messor barbarus have a phalanx strategy at a colonial level, and branching is more profuse. Finally, trunk route segments do not indicate any preference for crossing determined vegetation densities, but rather connect successive branching points or trunk route ends by the shortest route. These results concur with a model of structural strategy change (guerilla — phalanx) (Hutchings 1988) at the level of trunk routes. They are probably constituted by transitory sections with few branches, that expand other more profusely branched sections which are more dedicated to foraging.  相似文献

The fauna of Mesostigmata in nests of the white stork Ciconia ciconia was studied in the vicinity of Poznań (Poland). A total of 37 mite species was recovered from 11 of the 12 nests examined. The mite fauna was dominated by the family Macrochelidae. Macrocheles merdarius was the most abundant species, comprising 56% of all mites recovered. Most of the abundant mite species were associated with dung and coprophilous insects. It is likely that they were introduced into the nests by adult storks with dung as part of the nest material shortly before and after the hatching of the chicks.  相似文献

We analysed the phylogenetic and phylogeographic relationships of four Mediterranean species of the rare slave-making ant genus Chalepoxenus and eleven of its about 20 Temnothorax host species by sequencing the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I and II genes. Neighbour-Joining, Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian analyses based on 1320 bp indicate that the genus Chalepoxenus constitutes a monophylum. In all three analyses, C. kutteri from Southwest Europe and the workerless, “degenerate slavemaker” C. brunneus from North Africa form a monophyletic group. C. muellerianus and C. tauricus, distributed in Southern Europe and Ukraine, respectively, form a monophylum in the Neighbour-Joining and the Maximum Parsimony analysis. In our limited set of only 11 of several hundred Temnothorax species, T. flavicornis forms the sister group of Chalepoxenus. Our study further indicates paraphyly of the genus Temnothorax with respect to Chalepoxenus. Moreover, the results suggest that speciation in this slave-making genus is possibly caused by the formation of host races as different Chalepoxenus species use different hosts, and some samples seem to cluster by host species rather than by geographical distance. In consideration of their origin the adaptive strategies of the evergreen species of the Mediterranean maquis were analysed. Rosmarinus officinalis L., Erica arborea L., and Erica multiflora L. had the lowest net photosynthetic rate (PN) in the favourable period [7.8±0.6 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], the highest PN decrease (on an average 86 % of the maximum) but the highest recovery capacity (>70 % of the maximum) at the first rainfall in September. Cistus incanus L. and Arbutus unedo L. had the highest PN during the favourable period [15.5±5.2 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], 79 % decrease during drought, and a lower recovery capacity (on an average 54 %). Quercus ilex L., Phillyrea latifolia L., and Pistacia lentiscus L. had an intermediate PN in the favourable period [9.2±1.3 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], a lower reduction during drought (on an average 63 %), and a range from 62 % (Q. ilex and P. latifolia) to 39 % (P. lentiscus) of recovery capacity. The Mediterranean species had higher decrease in PN and stomatal conductance during drought and a higher recovery capacity than the pre-Mediterranean species. Among the pre-Mediterranean species, P. latifoliahad the best adaptation to long drought periods also by its higher leaf mass per area (LMA) which lowered leaf temperature thus decreasing transpiration rate during drought. Moreover, its leaf longevity determined a more stable leaf biomass during the year. Among the Mediteranean species, R. officinalis was the best adapted species to short drought periods by its ability to rapidly recover. Nevertheless, R. officinalis had the lowest tolerance to high temperatures by its PN dropping below half its maximum value when leaf temperature was over 33.6°C.
