It has long been argued that a resident may benefit from helping its neighbor defend a territory against a challenger to avoid renegotiating its boundaries with a new and potentially stronger individual. We quantify this theory by exploring games involving challengers, residents and potential allies. In a simplified discrete game with zero variation of fighting strength, helping neighbors is part of an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) only if fighting costs are low relative to those of renegotiation. However, if relative fighting costs are high then an interventional ESS remains possible with finite variation of strength. Under these conditions, neighbors may help residents fight off intruders, but only when the resident does not stand a reliable chance of winning alone. We show that neighbor intervention is more likely with low home advantage to occupying a territory, strengths combining synergistically or low probability that an ally will be usurped, amongst other factors. Our parameterized model readily explains occasional intervention in the Australian fiddler crab, including why the ally tended to be larger than both the assisted neighbor and the intruder. Reciprocity is not necessary for this type of cooperation to persist, but also it is by no means inevitable in territorial species.  相似文献

Previous studies have discussed the evolution of ownership using the Hawk–Dove–Bourgeois game. Decisive parameters are resource values (V) and contest costs (C). However, ownership may also evolve as a result of the effects of population density. To compare the effects of population density with those of resource values, I created a learning-based model of a revised Hawk–Dove–Bourgeois game. The game simulates the dynamics of agents that struggle for regions (“territories”) along a line. With appropriate sets of r (resource value) and l (reciprocal of the population density), the model showed that ownership is more likely to evolve when the resource value is small and population density is high. An area containing high-value resources is likely to accompany high population density. However, simulations showed that population density has stronger effects than resource value on the evolution of ownership.  相似文献

Theoretical studies have shown that cooperation tends to evolve when interacting individuals have positively correlated phenotypes. In the present article, we explore the situation where this correlation results from information exchange between social partners, and behavioral flexibility. We consider the game 'continuous iterated prisoner's dilemma'. The level of cooperation expressed by individuals in this game, together with their ability to respond to one another, both evolve as two aspects of their behavioral strategy. The conditions for a strategy to be evolutionarily stable in this game are degenerate, and earlier works were thus unable to find a single ESS. However, a detailed invasion analysis, together with the study of evolution in finite populations, reveals that natural selection favors strategies whereby individuals respond to their opponent's actions in a perfectly mirrored (i.e., correlated) fashion. As a corollary, the overall payoff of social interactions (i.e., the amount of cooperation) is maximized because couples of correlated partners effectively become the units of selection.  相似文献

Two apes species, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus), show a peculiar contrast in their social structure. The contrast cannot be explained simply by the differences in their ecological conditions, as has previously been suggested. This paper presents a mathematical model to interpret the contrast, through a competition game within and across groups. Two alternative strategies, dispersal and association, are applied to the model, in order to represent within-group-competition (WGC). Two more alternative strategies, Hawk and Dove, are also applied to the model, in order to represent between-group-competition (BGC). Mathematical analysis is executed for the frequencies of three mixed-strategists: dispersal-Hawk, dispersal-Dove and association. The population dominated by dispersal-Hawk and dispersal-Dove strategists, or by association strategists, is assumed to characterize the social structure of chimpanzees or bonobos, respectively. The model predicts that each social structure can be evolutionarily stable under the same ecological conditions, and will not easily recover once it has been replaced by the other. This stability is through a bi-directional influence: the influence of BGC on WGC and vice versa. The model suggests that the possibility of fatal violence within a group strengthens the robustness of each social structure.  相似文献

Airborne communication can affect systemic induced resistance to herbivory on neighboring branches and individual plants. Sagebrush is the best known example of this phenomenon although the mechanisms of this communication system remain unidentified. We do not know the timing of emission or the chemical nature of the active cue. We investigated the timing of this phenomenon by using plastic bags to prevent propagation of volatile compounds and experimentally manipulated the timing of removal of these bags. We found that blocking the volatiles prevented systemic induced resistance. Experimentally allowing clipped branches to release cues for up to 3 days after clipping caused a reduction in damage in neighboring branches on the clipped plants. This indicates that active cues are released from the time we clipped for the next 3 days or that cues released immediately remained active over this time period. As we continue to evaluate potential chemicals as active cues in plant communication, this prolonged effectiveness may provide an important screen against which to evaluate any putative signals. Male bowl and doily spiders (Frontinella pyramitela: Linyphiidae) engage in dangerous fights over access to females. Relatively smaller individuals are more at risk of fatal injury than their larger opponents. Males assess relative fighting ability during contests: smaller individuals tend to give up quickly. Fights occur between a male with information about the value of the contested female (number of fertilizable eggs) and an intruding male with less information. In this paper, a sequential assessment game (a game theory model of fighting behavior) is adapted to male combat in the bowl and doily spider to attempt a quantitative test. The model makes predictions about fight duration, probability of winning, and the occurrence of fatalities as a function of resource value and size asymmetry. Comparison with empirical data from staged contests yields a generally good quantitative agreement with the predictions. A few deviations are also noted.  相似文献

Eurasian penduline tits (Remiz pendulinus) have an unusually diverse breeding system consisting of frequent male and female polygamy, and uniparental care by the male or the female. Intriguingly, 30 to 40 per cent of all nests are deserted by both parents. To understand the evolution of this diverse breeding system and frequent clutch desertion, we use 6 years of field data to derive fitness expectations for males and females depending on whether or not they care for their offspring. The resulting payoff matrix corresponds to an asymmetric Snowdrift Game with two alternative evolutionarily stable strategies (ESSs): female-only and male-only care. This, however, does not explain the polymorphism in care strategies and frequent biparental desertion, because theory predicts that one of the two ESSs should have spread to fixation. Using a bootstrapping approach, we demonstrate that taking account of individual variation in payoffs explains the patterns of care better than a model based on the average population payoff matrix. In particular, a model incorporating differences in male attractiveness closely predicts the observed frequencies of male and female desertion. Our work highlights the need for a new generation of individual-based evolutionary game-theoretic models.  相似文献

Summary. After an overview of the criteria for the definition of cell death in the animal cell and of its different types of death, a comparative analysis of PCD in the plant cell is reported. The cytological characteristics of the plant cell undergoing PCD are described. The role of plant hormones and growth factors in the regulation of this event is discussed with particular emphasis on PCD activation or prevention by polyamine treatment (doses, timing and developmental stage of the organism) in a Developmental cell death plant model: the Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) flower corolla. Some of the effects of polyamines might be mediated by transglutaminase catalysis. The activity of this enzyme was examined in different parts of the corolla during its life span showing an acropetal trend parallel to the cell death wave. The location of transglutaminase in some sub-cellular compartments suggests that it exerts different functions in the corolla DCD.  相似文献

Summary. The influence of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity on the KCl-evoked amino acid concentrations was investigated by in vivo microdialysis in the striatum in a rat model of excitotoxic lesion. Basal microdialysate levels of amino acids decreased during the quinolinic acid-induced neurodegeneration process, except for glutamine that increased initially and returned to control values 30 days after quinolinic acid exposure. KCl-evoked increase of extracellular amino acid concentration was reduced due to NOS activity in the striatum of both controls and lesioned animals, except for 120 days after quinolinic acid injection. These changes of amino acid concentrations in microdialysates correlated with the known biochemistry of the consecutive domineered cell types during the lesion process as revealed by histochemistry for NOS, NADPH-diaphorase, GFAP and isolectin B4. The present data provide direct evidence that NOS activity can modulate extracellular amino acid concentrations in the striatum not only under physiological conditions, but also during a pharmacologically induced lesion process and, thus, suggests that nitric oxide affects neurodegeneration via this pathway. The cortical microfilament (MF) component of the cytoskeleton within axial elements of the secondary vascular system of the angiosperm tree, Aesculus hippocastanum L. (horse-chestnut) was studied using transmission electron microscopy of ultrathin sections and indirect immunofluorescence microscopy of actin in thick sections. As seen by electron microscopy, MF bundles have a net axial orientation within fusiform cambial cells and their secondary vascular derivatives (i.e. in the axial xylem and phloem parenchyma, xylem fibres, vessel and sieve elements, and companion cells). Immunofluorescence studies, however, reveal that this axial orientation can be more accurately described as a helix of extremely high pitch; it is a persistent feature of all axial secondary vascular elements during their development. Helical MF arrays are the only arrangement seen in secondary phloem cells. However, in addition to helices, other MF arrays are seen in secondary xylem cells. For example, fibres possess ellipses of MFs associated with simple-pit formation, and vessel elements possess circular arrays of MFs that associate with the developing inter-vessel bordered pits, ray–vessel contact pits, and with the perforation plate. Linear MF arrays are seen co-oriented with the developing tertiary wall-thickenings in vessel elements. Summary. Mammalian hexokinase (HXK) is found at the outer mitochondrial membrane, exposed to mitochondrial oxygen- and nitrogen-radicals. Given the important role of this enzyme in metabolic pathways and diseases, the effect of S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) on HXK A structure and activity was studied. To focus on the catalytic domain, yeast HXK A was used because it has a significant homology to the mammalian domain that contains both the regulatory and catalytic sites. Biologically relevant [GSNO]/[HXK] caused a significant decrease in Vmax with glucose (but not with fructose), along with oxidation of 5 Met and nitration of 4 Tyr. Preincubation of HXK with glucose abrogated the effect of GSNO whereas fructose was ineffective. These results are interpreted by considering the tight binding of glucose to the enzyme as opposed to that of fructose. The segment comprised from amino acids 304 to 306 contained the most modifications. Given that this sequence is highly conserved in HXK from various species, a decline in activity is expected when a high-affinity substrate is presented. Considering that changes in primary structure are envisioned at high [GSNO]/[HXK] ratios, like those present under normal conditions, it could be hypothesized that the high concentration of hexokinase present in fast growing tumors may serve not only to sustain high glycolysis rates, but also to minimize protein damage that might result in activity decline, compromising energy metabolism.  相似文献

Reproductive skew has been identified as a major dimension along which animal societies vary. Two major kinds of reproductive skew models are transactional models, which explain the distribution of reproduction within animal societies as the result of reproductive payments exchanged among group members with differential leverage, and tug-of-war models, in which the reproductive shares are determined by costly ‘tugs-of-war’. These two models have recently been synthesized to yield the mutual-pay, bordered tug-of-war model. In this paper, we extend the latter, show its evolutionary stability, and demonstrate that the generalized model yields four sub-models, namely the mutual-pay, alpha-pay, beta-pay, and pure tug-of-war. The alpha-pay sub-model turns out to closely resemble the original “concessions” transactional skew model, and the beta-pay sub-model turns out to have properties similar to the “restraint” transactional skew model. Thus, the general model unifies the four major models of reproductive skew and is rich in its predictions, as each sub-model exhibits different qualitative and quantitative relationships between reproductive skew or intra-group conflict and the ecological and genetic factors that determine skew and conflict. The conditions favoring transitions among these sub-models also are precisely predicted by the general model. The general model accommodates data from acorn woodpeckers and primitively eusocial bees potentially can account for many of the highly varied empirical findings on reproductive skew. We suggest further research that focuses on (1) determining which model is suitable for certain species and (2) understanding why and how various social animals resolve their breeding conflict by different conflict resolution mechanisms.  相似文献

Larvae of Acanthoscelides obtectus show two contrasting behaviors when entering a bean. One is pioneer behavior in which a larva enters the bean through an entrance hole made by itself; the other is follower behavior in which a larva enters the bean through an entrance hole made by a pioneer. Previous studies have shown that the number of followers is much greater than that of pioneers. If there is a cost to being a pioneer, and if larvae can choose either of the two strategies, there is a dilemma: to be a pioneer or not. This dilemma is similar to the chicken game because if all larvae avoid choosing the risky pioneer strategy in favor of the follower strategy, none of the larvae can enter a bean, and they will die. In the present study, in order to investigate whether the larvae of A. obtectus are facing a dilemma of entry order, we experimentally measured the cost to pioneers and tested the flexibility of larval entering strategies. Pioneers’ costs were measured by entrance success rate, and the flexibility of larval strategies was tested by gauging the proportion of pioneers at various larval densities. The entrance success of pioneers was lower than that of followers, and the proportion of pioneers decreased as the number of competing larvae increased. These results suggest that the Pioneer-Follower interaction in A. obtectus satisfies the conditions for a dilemma game: the larvae of A. obtectus are in a dilemma of entry order.  相似文献

Summary. Ten years after the establishment of the term proteome, the science surrounding it has yet to fulfill its potential. While a host of technologies have generated lists of protein names, there are only a few reported studies that have examined the individual proteins at the covalent chemical level defined as protein species in 1997 and their function. In the current study, we demonstrate that this is possible with two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and mass spectrometry by presenting clear evidence of in vivo N-terminal alpha A crystallin truncation and relating this newly detected protein species to alpha crystallin activity regulation by protease cleavage in the healthy young murine lens. We assess the present state of technology and suggest a shift in resources and paradigm for the routine attainment of the protein species level in proteomics.  相似文献

Summary. Fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), a membrane-anchored enzyme responsible for the termination of endocannabinoid signalling, is an attractive target for treating conditions such as pain and anxiety. Inhibitors of the enzyme, optimized using rodent FAAH, are known but their pharmacology and medicinal chemistry properties on the human FAAH are missing. Therefore recombinant human enzyme would represent a powerful tool to evaluate new drug candidates. However, the production of high amounts of enzyme is hampered by the known refractiveness of FAAH to overexpression. Here, we report the successful overexpression of rat and human FAAH as a fusion to the E. coli maltose-binding protein, retaining catalytic properties of native FAAH. Several known FAAH inhibitors were tested and differences in their potencies toward the human and rat FAAH were found, underscoring the importance of using a human FAAH in the development of inhibitors. Much of our current knowledge about the physiological and pathophysiological role of gap junctions is based on experiments where coupling has been reduced by either chemical agents or genetic modification. This has brought evidence that gap junctions are important in many physiological processes. In a number of cases, gap junctions have been implicated in the initiation and progress of disease, and experimental uncoupling has been used to investigate the exact role of coupling. The inverse approach, i.e., to increase coupling, has become possible in recent years and represents a new way of testing the role of gap junctions. The aim of this review is to summarize the current knowledge obtained with agents that selectively increase gap junctional intercellular coupling. Two approaches will be reviewed: increasing coupling by the use of antiarrhythmic peptide and its synthetic analogs and by interfering with the gating of gap junctional channels.  相似文献

1. Most game theoretical models of biparental care predict that a reduction in care by one partner should not be fully compensated by increased work of its mate but this may not be true for incubating birds because a reduction in care could cause the entire brood to fail.
2. I performed the first handicapping experiment of both males and females during incubation, by placing small lead weights on the tails of male and female northern flickers Colaptes auratus , a woodpecker in which males do most of the incubation.
3. Females responded to the acute stressor (handling and handicapping) by tending to abandon more readily than males and staying away from the nest longer in the first incubation bout. Among pairs that persisted, both males and females compensated fully for a handicapped partner, keeping the eggs covered nearly 100% of the time.
4. Partners did not retaliate by forcing their handicapped mate to sit on the eggs with a long incubation bout length subsequent to having a long bout length themselves. Instead, during the 24 h immediately after handicapping, males behaved generously by relieving handicapped females early.
5. Such generosity was probably not energetically sustainable as these male partners took on less incubation in the 72 h following handicapping compared to female partners of handicapped males. Males and females are probably generous in the short-term because of the high cost of nest failure during incubation but maintaining increased work loads in the longer term is probably limited by body condition and abandonment thresholds consistent with game theory models.  相似文献

This paper examines how two countries would allocate resources at the onset of an epidemic when they seek to protect their own populations by minimizing the total number of infectives over the entire time horizon. We model this situation as a game between selfish countries, where players strategically allocate their resources in order to minimize the total number of infected individuals in their respective populations during the epidemic. We study this problem when the initial number of infectives is very small, which greatly simplifies the analysis. We show in this framework that selfish countries always allocate their resources so as to bring the effective reproduction ratio below one and avoid a major outbreak. When a major outbreak is avoidable, we further identify the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the individual allocation decisions of selfish countries match the decision that a central planner would make in order to minimize the total number of infectives in the whole population (without distinguishing between countries).  相似文献
