Saline meadows in Goshen Bay, Utah County, Utah, USA, occur interspersed among large areas of salt playa. Springs irrigate these meadows which show concentric vegetational zones surrounding each spring. Each vegetational zone demonstrates its own unique dominant vascular plant species. The central zone is dominated primarily by Scirpus americanus, the middle zone by Eleocharis palustris and the outer zone by Juncus balticus, Distichlis spicata and Muhlenbergia asperifolia. As distance increases from the springs, pH and soluble salt concentration increase, while percent organic matter, percent moisture and phosphorus decrease. With the increase in salt levels and decrease in water levels, halophytic plant species generally increase with distance from the springs.  相似文献

I studied long- tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis)feeding behavior and ecology as part of a larger behavioral ecological study at the Natai Lengkuas Station, Tanjung Puting National Park, Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia. I collected data on feeding behavior via scan sampling of all visible individuals in the focal group (approximately 800 observation hours). I established vegetational plots and monitored them monthly to determine food availability and abundance. I found long- tailed macaques to be primarily frugivorous;leaves, flowers, insects and bark provided the remainder of the diet. They used at least 33 plant species as food sources, but >60% of the diet was provided by only 5 species. Based on previous vegetational analyses, these tree species were among the highest in relative density. However, selection ratios for 19 food species indicate that 13 of them were selected more often than expected. Long- tailed macaques appear to be selective feeders but can exploit a variety of food sources during periods of food scarcity.  相似文献

Abstract. The efficiency of four nonparametric species richness estimators — first‐order Jackknife, second‐order Jackknife, Chao2 and Bootstrap — was tested using simulated quadrat sampling of two field data sets (a sandy ‘Dune’ and adjacent ‘Swale’) in high diversity shrublands (kwongan) in south‐western Australia. The data sets each comprised > 100 perennial plant species and > 10 000 individuals, and the explicit (x‐y co‐ordinate) location of every individual. We applied two simulated sampling strategies to these data sets based on sampling quadrats of unit sizes 1/400th and 1/100th of total plot area. For each site and sampling strategy we obtained 250 independent sample curves, of 250 quadrats each, and compared the estimators’ performances by using three indices of bias and precision: MRE (mean relative error), MSRE (mean squared relative error) and OVER (percentage overestimation). The analysis presented here is unique in providing sample estimates derived from a complete, field‐based population census for a high diversity plant community. In general the true reference value was approached faster for a comparable area sampled for the smaller quadrat size and for the swale field data set, which was characterized by smaller plant size and higher plant density. Nevertheless, at least 15–30% of the total area needed to be sampled before reasonable estimates of St (total species richness) were obtained. In most field surveys, typically less than 1% of the total study domain is likely to be sampled, and at this sampling intensity underestimation is a problem. Results showed that the second‐order Jackknife approached the actual value of St more quickly than the other estimators. All four estimators were better than Sobs (observed number of species). However, the behaviour of the tested estimators was not as good as expected, and even with large sample size (number of quadrats sampled) all of them failed to provide reliable estimates. First‐ and second‐order Jackknives were positively biased whereas Chao2 and Bootstrap were negatively biased. The observed limitations in the estimators’ performance suggests that there is still scope for new tools to be developed by statisticians to assist in the estimation of species richness from sample data, especially in communities with high species richness.  相似文献

Although shoot patchiness has long been studied in Posidonia oceanica meadows, small scale spatial structure of P. oceanica meadows is poorly known, as very few studies focused on this feature. In order to analyze spatial patterns within P. oceanica meadows that appear uniformly dense and undisturbed, we collected shoot density data at the Capo Rizzuto Marine Protected Area (NE Mediterranean, Italy). Intensive sampling was carried out within a square lattice at small spatial scale (i.e. in the 10−1–102 m2 range) and shoot counts were obtained from sample quadrats of different size (60, 40, 20 cm). Spatial data analysis highlighted high irregularity in shoot density from centimetric to larger spatial scales. Therefore the deviation between shoot density estimates obtained using conventional methods and the overall average of quadrat counts (assumed as the best estimate for true density) was never negligible even when larger counting quadrats or higher numbers of replicates were adopted. While shoot density is regarded as the most important property of a P. oceanica meadow and as an indicator of ecosystem health, uncertainty in density estimates and unknown expected errors impair the effectivity of this approach. However, we showed that error could be predicted based on sampling intensity and design in an apparently uniform meadow. Although results from a single case study cannot be generalized, our work is the first attempt at analyzing the problems related to density estimates obtained from shoot counts and it shows how sampling can be optimized to achieve any desired level of accuracy.  相似文献

Counting the number of individuals emerging from burrows is the most practical method for estimating the apparent abundance of Australian Uca species living in mangrove habitats. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect on counts of quadrat design, distance of observer, quadrat size, recovery time and observational technique. Significant differences in the apparent abundance of one species were found when the subjects were within 2 m of the observer, and when a conspicuous quadrat was used. The largest quadrat tested provided the least variability in counts but an intermediate size (0.56 m2) was more practical. Most Uca active within a 30-min period emerged during the first 10 min regardless of site, species, sex or season. There was a linear correlation between scanning and continuous observation indicating that the former method could be useful when sampling time was limited. Temporal changes in the apparent abundance of Uca suggest that long-term sampling and more detailed studies will be worthwhile.  相似文献

An experimental study site in an unfertilized meadow of great species richness at Negrentino (820 m) in Southern Switzerland has been investigated by successive point quadrat analysis since 1988. Two different managements, traditional mowing and abandonment, were realized on 3×6 plots of 200×220 cm. On each plot point frequency (sensu Goodall 1952) was sampled at spaces of 10 cm using the same 11×16 points every year. On all the plots 71 species were recorded within the four year period of 1988–1991.Small spatial differences and vegetational changes in time are interpreted on an ordination diagram of correspondence analysis. Differences between successional and fluctuational changes are recognized already in the early phase. On one plot a peak of phytocyclic fluctuation connected with a mass development of Trifolium repens was observed.Many species show significant year-to-year frequency changes. Taxa positively and negatively affected by abandonment are presented.Management and dry weather conditions in April and May are considered to be the main causes of trends and fluctuations.  相似文献

Summary Calculations of various diversity indices in seral meadow communities from the Central Pyrenees subalpine zone were based on quantitative vegetational analyses by the point quadrat method. Species richness (S) increased rapidly toward a maximum then decreased markedly with increasing maturation of the meadows. In contrast, equitability measured as the Pielou index first inereases gradualy and then remains on more or less the same level, while decreasing a little in older stages, if not accelered by over-grazing. Not surprisingly, Patten's redundancy measure exibits inverse variations. Since it encompasses both the number of species and the distribution of individuals over the species, the Shannon and Weaver index of diversity behaved in a manner intermediate between richness and evenness. In the two toposequences investigated, diversity and equitability variations were highly correlated with the occurence of monopolistic dominant species.

We studied plant species responses to environmental conditions in floodplain grasslands (alliance Cnidion) of the river Elbe (northern Germany) in order to describe relationships between species composition/diversity and underlying site gradients. We analysed a total area of 639 ha of floodplain grasslands, using 98 sampling plots. Vegetation responses to environmental conditions were examined by means of DCA. The relationships between species diversity and environmental conditions were examined using regression analyses. Our results show that species composition and species richness are mainly affected by present-day utilization, by the phosphate supply and by the productivity of stands. Species richness decreases significantly under grazing, with increasing phosphate supply and productivity of stands. Intermediate productivity levels, mowing and high inundation frequencies promote floodplain target species. Ninorg availability and base availability have only a minor impact on species composition/species diversity. Productivity is closely related to the amount of plant available phosphate. Low phosphate concentrations in the topsoil are particularly characteristic of Cnidium dubium floodplain meadows. Therefore, it is likely that in floodplain grasslands with low to intermediate productivity, phosphate is the most important factor influencing plant competition and plant species diversity. We hypothesize that an increased phosphate supply increases stand productivity and, hence, the competition for light, thus excluding weak competitors. This interpretation is supported by the present-day distribution of C. dubium floodplain meadows of the river Elbe: these are concentrated in the hybrid (between summer and winter dykes) and fossil floodplain (landward side of winter dykes), but have been replaced in the functional floodplain by grass-dominated plant communities as a result of a steady increase in the river water phosphate content. It is, therefore, only in the hybrid and fossil floodplain grasslands that species diversity may be preserved in the long term, as the P input is lower here than in the functional floodplain.  相似文献

Proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) feeding behavior and ecology were studied at the Natai Lengkuas Station, Tanjung Puting National Park, Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia. Data on feeding behavior were collected using scan sampling during group follows. Three vegetational plots containing 1,732 trees were established and monitored monthly for changes in fruit, flower, and young leaf production. Basal area and canopy cover were calculated and used in estimating food abundance. Proboscis monkeys were found to be folivore/frugivores, specializing in seed consumption. At least 55 different plant species were used as food sources, with a marked preference for Eugenia sp. 3/4,Ganua motleyana and Lophopetalum javanicum. These tree species were among the most frequent and most dominant. However, proboscis monkeys were selective feeders; use of tree species as food sources was not based simply on relative density. During times of low food abundance and/or availability proboscis monkeys switched dietary strategies and increased dietary diversity. The average total home range was estimated to be 130.3 ha, with an average group density of 5.2 groups per km2. The average biomass per km2 was estimated to be 499.5 kg. Given their high biomass and predilection for consuming seeds of dominant species, proboscis monkeys may help to maintain and increase vegetational diversity.  相似文献

Extensive sampling of strawberry plants in everbearing and June-bearing strawberry plantations and on potted plants showed that different species of mites were spatially separated. Of the two phytophagous species recorded, Tetranychus urticae was most abundant on old leaves and Phytonemus pallidus on folded leaves and flower/fruit clusters. Predatory phytoseiid mites were found on all plant parts but different species were spatially separated; Neoseiulus cucumeris and N. aurescens were found mostly on folded leaves and clusters, and N. californicus and Phytoseiulus persimilis on old and medium aged leaves. No Typhlodromus pyri were found in the field plantations. These patterns of distribution did not change over sampling dates in summer and early autumn. An understanding of this within-plant zonation of mite species is important when studying predator–prey interactions and when designing sampling strategies for strawberry. A programme to sample the entire mite system on strawberry should be stratified to include all the above mentioned parts of the plant. Different sampling protocols, as appropriate, are required for sampling different pest species and their associated predators.  相似文献

青藏高原气候变暖幅度显著高于全球其他区域,深刻影响着该地区植物群落的结构和稳定性。选择西藏念青唐古拉山的三种典型植物群落(高寒草原、高寒草甸和流石滩)作为研究对象,采用开顶式增温箱(OTC)模拟增温,研究了短期增温对植物群落结构和稳定性的影响。结果表明:(1)增温改变了群落的优势物种,影响其结构组成,而对物种多样性无显著影响;(2)增温显著降低了高寒草甸的地上生物量(P < 0.05),增加地下生物量(P < 0.01),从而导致了群落地下地上生物量分配策略的改变;(3)增温降低群落中部分物种的生态位宽度,进而影响群落稳定性,其中高寒草甸变化最大,达到-66.8%。研究结果可为青藏高原高寒草地生态系统应对和适应未来气候变化提供一定科学依据。  相似文献

Summary

A study was made in the Cairngorms, Scotland to make recommendations for a monitoring scheme capable of detecting changes in the vegetation caused by recreational pressure following the development of a funicular railway. Four methods were used in field trials to assess percentage cover of plant species and gravel, rock and bare ground, where appropriate, in two vegetation types (open and closed). The methods used were visual estimates in 50 × 40 cm quadrats (Q), the mean of visual estimates in twenty 10 × 10 cm sub-quadrats of the 50 × 40 cm quadrats (Q20), a modified point intercept method (RL) and photography. Variances between observers and between-quadrats were estimated for the different methods. The sampling design for detecting change was based on a model of variance, constructed from field trial data.

Between-observer and between-quadrat variances were related to mean percentage cover and approximated to a binomial distribution. The between-quadrat variance was larger than observer variance. The Q20 method achieved appreciably better precision than the other methods. Analysis of half of the 10 × 10 cmsub-quadrats (1/2Q20) selected in a checker board design achieved a relative efficiency of 78% compared with the Q20. This result suggests that comparable precision to the Q20 method could be achieved by choosing about 14 sub-quadrats in a larger quadrat, thus saving some time. Variation between quadrats also suggested that the Q20 method was the one of choice for maximising precision. The precision of the photographic method was based on fewer data points, so is less accurate than other estimates.

Minimum sample sizes were estimated for detecting a 10% relative change of a species in open vegetation with 30% cover (i.e. a change from 30% to <27 or to >33% cover). With a 10 % Type II error rate and 5 % Type I error rate the minimum sample sizes were 47 quadrats for Q, 18 for Q 20, 43 for RL, and 23 for the means of ten 10 × 10 cm sub-quadrats in open vegetation.

The most time-efficient field recording appeared to be the use of Q despite the required sample size being 2.6 times higher than that of Q20. The far lower time requirement per quadrat, however, compensated for the higher numbers. The number of quadrats would depend on the specified change in percentage cover and on the statistical significance level used. For example, to detect a 10% absolute change in cover (i.e. from 30% to either <20 % or >40 % cover) at 95 % probability the net effective recording time is estimated at 5 h per vegetation type while to detect a 5 % change at 99 % probability would require c. 25 h. Larger samples may be required for other species or for species with a low initial cover.  相似文献

Abstract. Spatial data can provide much information about the interrelations of plants and the relationship between individuals and the environment. Spatially ambiguous plants, i.e. plants without readily identifiable loci, and plants that are profusely abundant, present non‐trivial impediments to the collection and analysis of vegetation data derived from standard spatial sampling techniques. Sampling with grids of presence/absence quadrats can ameliorate much of this difficulty. Our analysis of 10 fully‐mapped grassland plots demonstrates the applicability of the grid‐based approach which revealed spatial dependence at a much lower sampling effort than mapping each plant. Ripley's K‐function, a test commonly used for point patterns, was effective for pattern analysis on the grids and the gridded quadrat technique was an effective tool for quantifying spatial patterns. The addition of spatial pattern measures should allow for better comparisons of vegetation structure between sites, instead of sole reliance on species composition data.  相似文献

After the cessation of regular management and after fertilization a single clonal species tends to dominate in many types of grasslands, whereas in regularly managed meadows these potential dominants usually attain a low cover. It has been hypothesized that plants reaching a high dominance in abandoned and fertilized meadows are selectively suppressed by mowing so that a balanced competition is maintained and competitive exclusion is postponed. We compared regeneration capacity and carbohydrate reserves accumulated by three species of clonal grasses, which markedly increase their dominance in irregularly mown, un-mown or fertilized meadows. Above-ground biomass and the amount of storage carbohydrates of the two largest species, (Molinia arundinacea, Calamagrostis epigejos) were reduced in a mown meadow. This effect was weaker in Bromus erectus, which produces smaller shoots. Shoots of Molinia were most impacted by mowing but their regeneration was efficient due to the large carbohydrate reserves in the shoot bases. Fertilization did not affect Bromus and Calamagrostis. In contrast, fertilized plants of Molinia produced larger storage organs and accumulated more carbohydrates. We conclude that plant size and growth form are important features promoting the ability of potential dominants to tolerate mowing and regenerate after it. Our results confirm that taller plants are selectively suppressed by this type of disturbance, thereby potentially promoting plant coexistence.  相似文献

探究不同恢复年限对于露天煤矿植被群落变化和植物个体生长的影响,进一步加强生态环境保护与生态修复治理措施。以内蒙古高寒露天煤矿排土场恢复4年(2018-2021年)的植物群落为研究对象,采用样方调查方法,对样地内植物群落进行调查,设置草本样方(1 m×1 m)和灌木样方(5 m×5 m),记录植物物种组成、高度及盖度等指标,计算Shannon-Wiener多样性指数、Simpon指数、Pielou均匀度指数和物种重要值。探讨不同的恢复年限植物群落变化特征和优势植物的养分吸收,为矿区人工植被恢复提供科学依据。结果表明:(1)矿区排土场植物群落物种数、生物量和群落多样性均随着恢复年限的增加而显著增加。总物种数从恢复第1年的16种增加到恢复第4年的31种,主要是由于非人工种植植物从6种增加到19种导致,特别是在恢复第2年增加显著,然后趋于平稳,这说明恢复第2年是物种增加关键的时期;(2)随着恢复年限的增加,生物量和多样性指数显著增加;矿区植被优势物种多以禾本科披碱草(Elymus dahuricus)、无芒雀麦(Bromus inermis);豆科植物苜蓿(Medicago sativa)、草木樨(Melilotus officinalis)、沙打旺(Astragalus adsurgens)、锦鸡儿(Caragana sinica);菊科植物大籽蒿(Artemisia sieversiana);十字花科油菜(Brassica napus)和胡颓子科沙棘(Hippophae rhamnoides)为主。(3)比较不同优势植物叶片、茎和根的氮(N)、磷(P)和钾(K)含量发现,草本优势种中菊科和豆科植物显著高于禾本科植物。灌木优势种中沙棘茎的N含量和P含量显著高于锦鸡儿。研究认为,在排土场植被恢复初期(4年)的物种选择上,豆科植物和菊科植物是草本植物首选的先锋物种,另外,沙棘是灌木首选的物种。  相似文献

通过野外调查、采样和实验室分析方法,研究优新景观树种纳塔栎(Quercus nuttallii)和柳叶栎(Quercus phellos)对湖南郴州Pb、Zn矿区复合污染土壤的适应性和修复潜力。试验设计A、B、E区种植1年生纳塔栎,C、D区种植1年生柳叶栎,1年后测量株高、地径、生物量等生长指标,随机采集植物全株及根际土壤,测试植物根际土壤和树木组织中的重金属含量。试验结果:Pb、Zn矿区土壤受到重金属Cd、Pb、Zn和As的复合污染,不同区域的土壤表现出污染异质性,采用单污染指数(Pi)和内梅罗指数(PN)评价不同地块的污染程度,A区尾矿库(PN=20.08)和B区(PN=3.14)为重度复合污染,C区(PN=2.43)为中度复合污染,D区(PN=1.55)和E区(PN=1.07)为轻微污染。纳塔栎和柳叶栎在以上不同污染地块均能正常生长,株高、地径和生物量与复合污染指数(内梅罗指数)及重金属含量呈负相关。其中纳塔栎对Cd的生物富集系数(BCF)在A、B、E区分别为6.27-8.37、3.67-4.38、42.93-52.75,高于C、D区柳叶栎对Cd的生物富集系数1.79-2.15、0.89-1.07。B-E区Zn的转运系数(TF)在1.79-2.28之间,A区Zn的转运系数为0.43。结论:纳塔栎和柳叶栎表现出较强的重金属耐性,对Cd具有较高的生物富集能力,对Zn具有较高的转运能力。其中纳塔栎对重金属积累能力较强,可作为亚热带地区铅锌矿区Cd、Pb、Zn、As复合污染土壤的植被恢复及生态修复候选树种。  相似文献

We examined the entire spatial distribution of a narrow endemic shrub (Coccoloba cereifera, Polygonaceae) in Serra do Cipó, Brazil. We tested the hypothesis that a narrow endemic species would show a gradual decline in either size and density towards the edges of its distribution. The contribution of soil specificity and post-fire growth to C. cereifera abundance and distribution were also investigated. C. cereifera showed multimodal and highly aggregated distribution pattern at several scales, from 25 m2 to 3000 m2 (blocked quadrat variance analyses). This pattern seems to be strongly related to the predominance of clonal recruitment and to the close association of the species to sandfields, which have discrete distribution between gallery forests and rocky outcrops. Population density did not decline towards the edge of the species distribution. Plants near the distribution boundaries had slightly more leaves and more inflorescences per plant (p<0.005), but there was no significant change in the mean number of ramets per clone. The absence of large plants in some populations at the center of the species distribution may be related to the higher frequency of fire in this region, killing aerial plant parts. Nearly all aggregations had inverse-J shaped size-distribution, suggesting effective recruitment of ramets, most frequently via asexual reproduction. Similar patterns of plant abundance may be common in fire-prone habitats characterized by infertile, and well-drained soils since these areas generally have high numbers of endemic plants, with strong soil specificity. Possible mechanisms for the observed pattern are discussed considering current models concerning distribution of abundance of species.  相似文献

In a physiognomically uniform Leucobryo-Pineteum phytocoenose the spatial pattern of point diversity was determined and the effect of quadrat size on the assessment of alpha diversity (in Whittaker's, 1977, sense) was analysed. In both cases the Shannon index of total species diversity and the evenness index were used to measure diversity. A contagious spatial pattern of point diversity and a high variation of point diversity values, as well as a strong non-linear dependence of H and J values on quadrat size, and also a decrease in H and J variation with an increase in quadrat size were found.Nomenclature follows Ehrendorfer (1973).
