Central nervous system lesions were studied by light microscopy in 43 farmed mink, aged 5 months to 2 1/2 years, with spontaneous encephalitozoonosis and showing cataractous eye changes. Lesions were found in the brain and spinal cord of all animals examined but were generally mild and chronic. The lesions were consistent with those previously described in spontaneous encephalitozoonosis in other carnivores. Parasites in parasitophorous vacuoles and free or phagocytosed in necrotic and granulomatous lesions were demonstrated in animals aged 5 months to 1 year. The occurrence of arterial lesions of the polyarteritis nodosa type found in the youngest animals probably indicates fetal infection. In animals aged 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 years active lesions were usually lacking and the changes were characterized by arterial sclerosis, sometimes with aneurysmal formations, small perivascular lympho-plasmacytic cuffings and focal gliosis.  相似文献

An outbreak of mycotic encephalitis occurred in rats 15-31 da old. Eight of 170 rats born within a 2-wk period had histologically proven mycotic encephalitis with the characteristics of phycomycosis (mucormycosis). No mycotic lesions were seen in the lungs or organs other than the brain.  相似文献

It was shown previously that focal cortical freezing lesions in rats cause widespread depression of local cerebral glucose utilization (LCGU) in cortical areas of the lesioned hemisphere. This was interpreted as reflecting functional depression. The underlying mechanisms were postulated to involve alterations of biogenic amine systems. Accordingly, levels of serotonin (5-HT), its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), and its precursor tryptophan were determined by an HPLC method with electrochemical detection in frontoparietal cortical areas of both hemispheres at 4 h and 1, 3, 6, 8, and 10 days after a unilateral cortical freezing lesion. The 5-HT content was significantly lower than normal in the lesioned hemisphere only at 24 h, whereas the 5-HIAA level peaked at 24 h but was significantly elevated above normal values between 4 h and 6 days after lesioning. No changes were noted in 5-HT and 5-HIAA contents in the hemisphere contralateral to the lesion. These results indicate that cortical 5-HT metabolism is increased throughout the lesioned hemisphere of a focally injured brain. The increase in tryptophan content of the lesioned brain appeared to have a time course more closely related to previously demonstrated changes in cortical LCGU than to the increase in 5-HIAA content.  相似文献

Legged locomotion has evolved as the most effective form of movement through unpredictable and tortuous environments. Upon encountering an obstacle, an animal must evaluate the object with its sense organs then use the information it acquires to direct appropriate transitional behaviors, such as turning. Previous studies using genetic and surgical lesions implicate the central body complex (CBC) in control of such transitional behaviors of various insects. In this study, lesions of the CBC and surrounding brain regions were used to examine the effects of damage on turning in free-moving and tethered cockroaches. Lesions were performed either as sagittal incisions or by inserting small pieces of foil into regions of the brain. Locomotor behaviors of intact and lesioned animals were compared using high speed video and kinematic analysis. The lesions locations were determined through histological methods. Sagittal lesions to the CBC often result in continuous or incorrect turns. Foil lesions in the CBC also increase the probability that individuals will show turning deficits. The location and degree of the lesion had a strong effect on the animal’s ability to turn. These data strongly suggest that the CBC mediates the effects of head sense organs that produce changes in the direction of walking.  相似文献

Brain involvement is commonly seen in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). However, little is known about the chronic changes of acute brain lesions on MRI over time. Here, our objective was to evaluate how acute brain MRI lesions in NMOSD changed on follow-up MRI. We reviewed the MRIs of 63 patients with NMOSD who had acute brain lesions and follow-up MRI over an interval of at least 3 months. Of the 211 acute brain lesions, 24% of lesions disappeared completely on T2-weighed images (WI) and a decrease in size ≥50% on T2-WI was observed in 58% of lesions on follow-up MRI. However, 47% of lesions revealed focal T1-hypointensity and, in particular, 18% showed focal cystic changes. Cystic changes were observed most commonly in corticospinal tract and corpus callosal lesions whereas the vast majority of lesions in the cerebellum, basal ganglia and temporal white matter resolved completely. MRI remission on T2-WI occurred in 82% of lesions, while approximately half of the lesions presented foci of T1-hypointensity, which may be considered a severe tissue injury over time. The extent of brain injury following an acute brain lesion in NMOSD may depend on the location of the lesion.  相似文献

Polystichum squarrosum fern fed (30% w/w) rats showed moderate mortality, decrease in body weight, less body fat and splenomegaly. On post-mortem examination, significant gross lesions were not seen in sacrificed animals. Histopathologically, Polystichum fed rats showed dilated Virchow Robin's space in brain, mild to moderate vascular changes likeoedema, engorgement of blood vessels and haemorrhages in most of the visceral organs, interstitial pneumonia in lungs, focal necrosis and generalised vacuolative degenerative changes in liver, more haemosiderin deposition and presence of higher number of megakaryocytes in spleen, shrunken glomeruli, more peri-glomerular space and more number of glomeruli per microscopic field in kidneys, focal hyperplasia of urinary bladder and moderate to marked depletion of germinal epithelium and spermatids in seminiferous tubules of testes. Pathologically, progressive changes were observed only in liver, urinary bladder and testes on 180 days post feeding (DPF). One fern fed rat sacrificed on 135 DPF showed hepatic tumour which was diagnosed as hepatocellular carcinoma. The results showed that P. squarrosum produced almost comparable pathological changes/preneoplastic lesions as reported in bracken fern fed animals. Long term exposure studies (i.e. 2 yrs) are desired.  相似文献

Three-week-old outbred mice were inoculated intranasally with a mildly pathogenic strain of mouse hepatitis virus (MHV-S). Tissues were analyzed for distribution of infectious virus, lesions, and viral antigen at intervals up to 49 days after inoculation. Sera were tested for neutralizing antibody to MHV-S. Within the first week of infection, virus was isolated from lung and brain of most mice and liver of one mouse, but not from blood, spleen, or intestine. Microscopic lesions consisted of mild olfactory mucosal necrosis, neuronal necrosis of olfactory bulbs and tracts, lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates and vacuolation in the brain, mild nonsuppurative pulmonary perivascular lymphocyte infiltration, focal interstitial pneumonia, and focal necrotizing hepatitis. The presence and distribution of MHV antigen, as determined by indirect immunofluorescence, correlated with virus recovery and acute lesions. No virus or antigen was demonstrable beyond day 7. Serum antibody was first detected on day 10, and titers peaked on day 28 after infection.  相似文献

The Black Bengal is a prolific goat breed in India. Natural mutations in prolific sheep breeds have shown that the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) super family ligands such as growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF9), bone morphogenetic protein 15 (BMP15) and their type I receptor (bone morphogenetic protein receptor, BMPR1B) are crucial for ovulation and as well as for increasing litter size. Mutations in any of these genes increased prolificacy in sheep. Based on the known mutation information in sheep PCR primers were designed to screen known polymorphism in 88 random Black Bengal goats. Only the BMPR1B gene was polymorphic. Three genotypes of animals were detected in tested animals with mutant (FecBB) and wild type (FecB+) alleles were 0.57 and 0.43, respectively. Non-carrier, heterozygous carrier and homozygous carrier Black Bengal does had 2.7, 3.04 and 3.11 kids, respectively. All known point mutations of BMP15 and GDF9 genes were monomorphic in the animals tested. These results preliminarily showed that the BMPR1B gene might be a major gene that influences prolificacy of Black Bengal goats.  相似文献

Plasma testosterone levels were estimated in different male goat age groups. In Black Bengal at 15–30 days, 2–3 months, 3–5 months and in Black Bengal, Beetal, Beetal × Black Bengal and Black Bengal × Beetal at 6 months and > 12 months (n = 6 in each case). The plasma testosterone levels (mean ± s.e.m.) were high (7.1 ± 2.0 ng/ml) at 2–3 months and fell drastically to 2.6 ± 0.5 ng/ml before attaining sexually mature levels of 4.6 ± 0.9 ng/ml at 6 months and 4.1 ± 0.8 ng/ml at > 12 months. The mature bucks of all genetic groups had a plasma testosterone concentration of 4.6 ± 0.8 ng/ml. Genetic group differences were not significant.  相似文献

Spontaneous lesions in wild-caught, laboratory-maintained cynomolgus monkeys used in drug-toxicity studies were examined histopathologically in an effort to better distinguish toxic changes from spontaneous lesions and assess the toxicity of drugs more exactly. In the liver and kidney, where toxic changes are observed frequently, many spontaneous lesions were observed. Infiltration of mononuclear cells, vacuolization of the hepatocytes, dilatation of the renal tubules, and vacuolization of the renal epithelia were observed at a relatively high frequency. It is considered important to examine these changes carefully, because they closely resemble the changes recognized as toxic. Deposition of brownish pigment was observed in various organs such as the liver, kidney, spleen, intestinal tract, lung and brain, however the type of pigment differed among the organs, and histochemical examination revealed anthracosis or accumulation of hemosiderin, or melanin. Since the monkeys were caught in the wild, many parasitic lesions were observed especially in the large intestine and liver. Helminthous worms were frequently observed in the granulomas in the large intestine, however, no parasites were observed in the granulomas in the liver. Such lesions in the liver may be misinterpreted as toxic changes, when only scars or inflammatory lesions are observed.  相似文献

The catalase activities in blood and organs of the acatalasemic (C3H/AnLCsbCsb) mouse of the C3H strain are lower than those of the normal (C3H/AnLCsaCsa) mouse. We conducted a study to examine changes in the activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX), the total gluathione content, and the lipid peroxide level in the brain, which is more sensitive to oxidative stress than other organs, at 3, 6, or 24 hr following X-ray irradiation at doses of 0.25, 0.5, or 5.0 Gy to the acatalasemic and the normal mice. No significant change in the lipid peroxide level in the acatalasemic mouse brain was seen under non-irradiation conditions. However, the acatalasemic mouse brain was more damaged than the normal mouse brain by excessive oxygen stress, such as a high-dose (5.0 Gy) X-ray. On the other hand, we found that, unlike 5.0 Gy X-ray, a relatively low-dose (0.5 Gy) irradiation specifically increased the activities of both catalase and GPX in the acatalasemic mouse brain making the activities closer to those in the normal mouse brain. These findings may indicate that the free radical reaction induced by the lack of catalase is more properly neutralized by low dose irradiation.  相似文献

The organ distribution and pathogenecity of Orungo virus were studied in Swiss Albino mice following intracerebral and intraperitoneal inoculations. There was an age-related response in mice to Orungo virus ic infection. Virus multiplied to higher titres in the brain of newborn (2-day-old) mice than in the other organs. The histopathologic changes which were restricted to the brain included diffuse mononuclear cell infiltration, prominent perivascular and interstitial oedema in the cerebrum and cerebellum. In 10-day-old mice, low level infective virus was detected only in the brain, with resultant mild and focal mononuclear cell infiltration in the cerebral cortex. Recovery from Orungo virus ic infection in 10-day-old animals is accompanied by stunted growth. Orungo virus did not multiply in 21-day-old mice which were found to be histologically unremarkable. Following ip inoculation Orungo virus did not multiply, nor was there an histopathological change in inoculated newborn, 10-day or 21-day-old mice.  相似文献

Studies were undertaken to identify the bacteria involved in a disease of wild octopus (Octopus vulgaris). Signs of the disease include round hard lesions in the arms or head mantle, leading, in advanced cases, to the loss of skin and the exposure of the muscle beneath. Bacterial strains isolated from sterile organs have been evaluated taxonomically and by experimental infections. Different phenotypes and ribotypes of Vibrio lentus were identified. Experimental infection by bath challenge demonstrated that V. lentus was able to reproduce the skin lesions, colonize the internal organs and induce mortality in healthy octopuses. V. lentus was re-isolated from the skin lesions and gill heart of dead octopuses, as confirmed by numerical taxonomy analysis. No effects were produced in sea bream or turbot by intraperitoneal injection of the bacterial isolate.  相似文献

The number of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) stained by the one-step silver colloid method was measured in preneoplastic and neoplastic bladder lesions induced by N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl)nitrosamine (BBN) in rats. Male ACI/N rats, 6 weeks of age, were given 0.05% BBN in drinking water for 5, 8, 12, 18 and 30 weeks to induce preneoplastic and neoplastic transitional cell lesions. The mean numbers of silver-stained NORs (AgNORs) in such lesions were as follows: untreated transitional epithelium (n = 6), 1.26 +/- 0.09; transitional cell epithelium outside focal lesions (n = 10), 1.75 +/- 0.10; simple hyperplasia (n = 10), 2.01 +/- 0.15; papillary or nodular (PN) hyperplasia (n = 10), 2.15 +/- 0.19; transitional cell papilloma (n = 5), 2.37 +/- 0.12; transitional cell carcinoma (n = 5), 3.52 +/- 0.23. Thus, the mean number of AgNORs showed a step-wise increase from untreated and treated, histologically normal transitional epithelium through simple hyperplasia and PN hyperplasia to transitional cell papilloma and carcinoma. These results suggest that the mean number of AgNORs may reflect the proliferative nature of bladder lesions induced by BBN, as reported in preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions in other organs. PN hyperplasias were classified into two types based upon the mean number of AgNORs, indicating that they include reversible and irreversible changes in contrast with simple hyperplasia which is reversible change.  相似文献

Structural changes in different parts of the brain in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients have been reported. RA is not regarded as a brain disease. Body organs such as spleen and lung produce RA-relevant genes. We hypothesized that the structural changes in the brain are caused by changes of gene expression in body organs. Changes in different parts of the brain may be affected by altered gene expressions in different body organs. This study explored whether an association between gene expressions of an organ or a body part varies in different brain structures. By examining the association of the 10 most altered genes from a mouse model of spontaneous arthritis in a normal mouse population, we found two groups of gene expression patterns between five brain structures and spleen. The correlation patterns between the prefrontal cortex, nucleus accumbens, and spleen were similar, while the associations between the other three parts of the brain and spleen showed a different pattern. Among overall patterns of the associations between body organs and brain structures, spleen and lung had a similar pattern, and patterns for kidney and liver were similar. Analysis of the five additional known arthritis-relevant genes produced similar results. Analysis of 10 nonrelevant-arthritis genes did not result in a strong association of gene expression or clearly segregated patterns. Our data suggest that abnormal gene expressions in different diseased body organs may influence structural changes in different brain parts.  相似文献

Acetyl-coenzyme A: choline O-acetyltransferase (EC 2.3.1.6) (ChAT) enzyme activity was measured in the nucleus basalis and other microscopically identified brain areas at various times after unilateral cortical lesions were made in the rat. Initially, a significant decrease in ChAT activity was detected in the nucleus basalis ipsilateral to the lesion. However, after 120 days ChAT activity had apparently recovered, as levels of the enzyme at that time were not significantly different from control values. No changes in ChAT activity could be detected in any of the other brain areas similarly studied. The significance of these findings and their relationship to the morphological changes seen in neurones of the nucleus basalis after cortical lesions are discussed.  相似文献

Newborn and young pups up to the age of 15 days were exposed to E. cuniculi, either by keeping the pups in cages together with orally inoculated foster-mothers and their offspring, or by oral inoculation with E. cuniculi spores. A majority of pups appeared sero-positive to E. cuniculi with the india-ink immuno-reaction from 35 to 87 days post exposure; spores of E. cuniculi were detected in organs of some of the animals. The non-inoculated pups kept together with the orally inoculated pups became seropositive from 49 to 129 days after the oral inoculations. However, the exposure of newborn and young pups failed to induce clinical encephalitozoo-nosis, and when killed at the time of pelting the body weights and fur quality appeared to be within the normal range in all exposed foxes. No macroscopic lesions were detected in the various organs. Histologically focal interstitial nephritis occurred in the great majority of the seropositive animals. Meningoencephalitis was seen in some of the foxes, whereas slightly thickened walls of some arteries, mainly in the myocardium, were found in a few animals. The lesions of the brain and kidneys seem to be very similar to those seen in chronic cases of rabbit encephalitozoonosis. Polyarteritis nodosa and severe encephalitis and interstitial nephritis with extensive proliferations of plasma cells, which are almost constant findings in cases of clinically diseased foxes, were not detected in any of the subclinically infected animals. Various factors that might be of significance in the pathogenesis of the disease are discussed, and it is concluded that intrauterine infection of the pups via the transplacental route appears to be an essential supposition for the establishment of clinical fox encephalitozoonosis.  相似文献

Definite lesions in the exocrine pancreas were produced when SMA mice were immunized eight times at intervals of 30 days with a mixture of extract of pooled pancreas from syngeneic mice and the capsular polysaccharide of Klebsiella pneumoniae type 1 Kasuya strain (CPS-K), whereas no pancreatic lesions were produced in mice given CPS-K alone or pancreatic extract alone. The typical histological changes were characterized by infiltration with lymphocytes, plasma cells, and other mononuclear cells, degeneration and lysis of the acinar cells, destruction of the lobular architecture, and replacement by fatty tissue and fibrous connective tissue. The endocrine islets were well preserved. No specific histological changes were produced in the organs other than the pancreas in these mice. Most of mice immunized with pancreatic extract mixed with CPS-K produced serum precipitins to syngeneic pancreatic antigens. However, severe pancreatic lesions were also produced in mice showing no definite precipitin production.  相似文献

Abstract: The effect of feeding pregnant rats with wheat and Bengal gram (black chick pea) diets during the later part of pregnancy on brain growth, enzymes, and free amino acids of glutamate metabolism in 1-day-old rats was investigated. These diets did not induce growth dissociation, and the body and brain weights were equally affected. The concentrations of DNA, RNA, protein, and free α-amino nitrogen in brain decreased significantly and the activities of glutamine synthetase, glutamine transferase, glutaminase 1, glutaminase 11, and glutamate decarboxylase and the concentrations of free amino acids, glutamic acid, glutamine, alanine, and GABA were also decreased. The concentration of aspartic acid, however, was increased. Wheat and Bengal gram diets fortified with lysine and with methionine, cystine, and tryptophan respectively showed various beneficial effects on the changes observed in the brain. A 20% casein diet induced higher body and brain weights and better brain protein and free α-amino nitrogen concentrations than those observed on a 10% casein diet.  相似文献
