In the present study, the effect of chemical cues from two fish species (mosquitofish and pumpkinseed), at different concentrations, was tested in life history experiments with Daphnia longispina. The two fish species used represent the most abundant planktivores of many Mediterranean shallow lakes (SW Europe), where the indigenous fish communities have been replaced by such exotic assemblages. Results have shown a similar response of D. longispina to both fish species: kairomones stimulated daphnids to produce more offspring, which resulted in higher fitness (r), relatively to a fishless control. Fish presence also induced an earlier first reproduction, a smaller size at maturity of daphnids, and the production of smaller-sized neonates. Significant correlations with fish concentration (indirect measure of fish kairomone concentration) were found for size at maturity and neonate size, for both fish species. These results are in accordance to the “positive response” observed by other authors, which represents a defence mechanism to face losses caused by fish predators. The chemically mediated size reduction of mature females and neonates is an adaptive response to the size-selective predation exerted by fish. Pumpkinseed introduction is very recent in the lake of origin of the daphnids used in the experiments and its kairomone produced similar effects to mosquitofish in the life history of D. longispina. These results are contrary to the existence of a species-specific kairomone and support the hypothesis of a general fish kairomone. Field observations and inoculation experiments revealed that Uromyces appendiculatus var. azukicola has an autoecious and macrocyclic life cycle and produces spermogonia, aecia, uredinia, and telia on Vigna angularis var. angularis and V. angularis var. nipponensis. From inoculation experiments, it was suggested that this rust fungus has different host relationships from other varieties. Eretmocerus sp. nr. furuhashii (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) is an indigenous parasitoid of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius)(Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) from southern China; the effects of constant temperatures on the life history of E. sp. nr. furuhashii were examined in the laboratory. The developmental period ranged from 39.2 days at 20°C to 12.40 days at 32°C. A total of 263.4 degree-days were required to complete development with a lower developmental threshold temperature of 11.1°C. Of the eggs produced, 59.3% completed development at 20°C with completion increasing to 71.5% at 26°C. Adult female longevity was 10.8 days at 20°C and 5.2 days at 32°C while the mean daily offspring reproduced per female was highest at 29°C with 5.9 offspring. Adult oviposition peaked three days after emergence at 26, 29 and 32°C, and four days post-emergence at 20°C and 23°C. The total numbers of offspring produced per female ranged from 25.7 individuals at 32°C to 41.1 individuals at 20°C. The sex ratio had a female bias and ranged from 0.72 at 17°C to 0.51 at 35°C. The intrinsic rate of increase was 0.1727 at 29°C followed with 0.1606 at 32°C. Results indicated that E. sp. nr. furuhashii reaches its maximum biological potential at temperatures ranging from 26°C to 32°C.  相似文献

Hermes copper (Lycaena [Hermelycaena] hermes: Lycaenidae) is a rare species endemic to the coastal sage scrub in and around San Diego, CA, USA. This species has experienced substantial habitat loss due to urbanization and recent wildfires. We present data collected from field surveys conducted in 2003 and 2004. The flight season lasted 1–2 months with densities varying among sites and years. We observed adults most often near California buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) plants and significantly more often on north and west sides of trails or roads. We compared the robustness and statistical power of three indices of population size from the modified Pollard Walk surveys. We recorded the largest single-day count (Max Count), the cumulative number observed throughout the flight season (Pollard) and an estimate based on a four-parameter model (INCA: Insect Count Analyzer). The Pollard estimate was the most robust to sampling error and the most powerful at detecting population changes in simulated data. Improved monitoring techniques, both field methods and statistical estimation, are critical to determine the conservation status of rare butterflies like Hermes copper.  相似文献

The maT clade of transposons is a group of transposable elements intermediate in sequence and predicted protein structure to mariner and Tc transposons, with a distribution thus far limited to a few invertebrate species. We present evidence, based on searches of publicly available databases, that the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae has several maT-like transposons, which we have designated as CbmaT elements, dispersed throughout its genome. We also describe two additional transposon sequences that probably share their evolutionary history with the CbmaT transposons. One resembles a fold back variant of a CbmaT element, with long (380-bp) inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) that show a high degree (71%) of identity to CbmaT1. The other, which shares only the 26-bp ITR sequences with one of the CbmaT variants, is present in eight nearly identical copies, but does not have a transposase gene and may therefore be cross mobilised by a CbmaT transposase. Using PCR-based mobility assays, we show that CbmaT1 transposons are capable of excising from the C. briggsae genome. CbmaT1 excised approximately 500 times less frequently than Tcb1 in the reference strain AF16, but both CbmaT1 and Tcb1 excised at extremely high frequencies in the HK105 strain. The HK105 strain also exhibited a high frequency of spontaneous induction of unc-22 mutants, suggesting that it may be a mutator strain of C. briggsae.  相似文献

In the presence of size-selective fish daphnids were shown to exhibit two alternative inducible defence strategies: They may either escape predation by active migration or adopt a life history strategy, e.g., reproduce earlier and at a smaller size. Depending on the type of habitat, migration may either be vertically (in deep stratified lakes) or horizontally (in shallow lakes with macrophytes) oriented. Concerning behavioural defence strategies, daphnids living in medium-deep, weakly stratified water bodies with a poorly developed littoral face a dilemma, since the littoral provides no shelter and the availability of a deep-water refuge is unpredictable. We studied the population dynamics, life history changes (size at maturity) and daytime vertical distribution of Daphnia galeata in a weakly stratified reservoir in relation to predation by juvenile fish during 6 years. While temperature gradients were usually small, oxygen concentrations suggest that a low-oxygen refuge for daphnids was available in every year to some extent. Our results indicate that, depending on predation intensity and stratification patterns, daphnids exhibit both, behavioural and life history defences. In years with a high biomass of young-of-the-year (YOY) perch Daphnia abundance declined rapidly at the end of the clear water stage while at the same time the vertical distribution at daytime shifted to deep strata providing a low-oxygen refuge and the size at maturity decreased. However, while the life history response in some years lasted throughout most of the summer period, a shift in daytime vertical distribution was exhibited for much shorter periods. Both traits were much less expressed in years with low YOY fish densities and no negative correlation between them could be verified. We suggest that under high predation pressure in this relatively shallow reservoir no strictly alternative (either behavioural or life history) strategies exist, but that daphnids make use of the full range of possible anti-predator defences available, at least during short periods when predation is most intense. P transposons belong to the eukaryotic DNA transposons, which are transposed by a cut and paste mechanism using a P-element-coded transposase. They have been detected in Drosophila, and reside as single copies and stable homologous sequences in many vertebrate species. We present the P elements Pcin1, Pcin2 and Pcin3 from Ciona intestinalis, a species of the most primitive chordates, and compare them with those from Ciona savignyi. They showed typical DNA transposon structures, namely terminal inverted repeats and target site duplications. The coding region of Pcin1 consisted of 13 small exons that could be translated into a P-transposon-homologous protein. C. intestinalis and C. savignyi displayed nearly the same phenotype. However, their P elements were highly divergent and the assumed P transposase from C. intestinalis was more closely related to the transposase from Drosophila melanogaster than to the transposase of C. savignyi. The present study showed that P elements with typical features of transposable DNA elements may be found already at the base of the chordate lineage. Notocactus scopa cv. Soonjung was subjected to in planta Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation with vacuum infiltration, pin-pricking, and a combination of the two methods. The pin-pricking combined with vacuum infiltration (20-30 cmHg for 15 min) resulted in a transformation efficiency of 67-100%, and the expression of the uidA and nptII genes was detected in transformed cactus. The established in planta transformation technique generated a transgenic cactus with higher transformation efficiency, shortened selection process, and stable gene expression via asexual reproduction. All of the results showed that the in planta transformation method utilized in the current study provided an efficient and time-saving procedure for the delivery of genes into the cactus genome, and that this technique can be applied to other asexually reproducing succulent plant species.  相似文献

We have investigated the floral ontogeny of Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis (of the eucalypt group, Myrtaceae) using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Several critical characters for establishing relationships between these genera and to the eucalypts have been determined. The absence of compound petaline primordia in Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis excludes these taxa from the eucalypt clade. Post-anthesis circumscissile abscission of the hypanthium above the ovary in Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia is evidence that these three taxa form a monophyletic group; undifferentiated perianth parts and elongated fusiform buds are characters that unite Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis as sister taxa. No floral characters clearly associate Arillastrum with either the eucalypt clade or the clade of Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia.We gratefully acknowledge Clyde Dunlop and Bob Harwood (Northern Territory Herbarium) for collecting specimens of Allosyncarpia, and Bruce Gray (Atherton) for collecting specimens of Stockwellia. Planktonic copepods play a major role in the fluxes of matter and energy in the marine ecosystem, provide a biological pump of carbon into the deep ocean, and play a role in determining fish recruitment. Owing to such ecological considerations, it is essential to understand the role that climate might play in the interannual variability of these organisms and the mechanisms by which it could modify the ecosystem functioning. In this study, a causal chain of meteorological, hydrological and ecological processes linked to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) was identified in the Ligurian Sea, Northwestern Mediterranean. The forcing by the NAO drives most of the hydro-climatic variability during winter and early spring. Subsequently, interannual and decadal changes of the dominant copepods Centropages typicus and Temora stylifera were significantly correlated to the state of the hydro-climatic signal and tightly coupled to the NAO. Direct and indirect effects whose influence promoted phenological changes in the two copepod populations drove the species’ responses to climatic forcing. Opposite responses of the analysed species were also highlighted by these results. While years characterized by the positive phase of the NAO leads to enhancement of the strength and the forward move of the C. typicus peak, they act negatively on the annual cycle of T. stylifera, the abundance of which drops twofold and the annual peak appears delayed in time. In contrast, low NAO years lead to high abundance of T. stylifera and a forward timing of its peak, and acts in turn negatively on the C. typicus annual cycle in both abundance (low) and timing (delayed). Owing to the synchronism between hydro-climatic conditions and the NAO, and the major role of these species in the pelagic ecosystem of the studied area, these results provide key elements for interpreting and forecasting decadal changes of planktonic populations in the Ligurian Sea.  相似文献

The Drosophila melanogaster genes zerknüllt (zen) and fushi tarazu (ftz) are members of the Hox gene family whose roles have changed significantly in the insect lineage and thus provide an opportunity to study the mechanisms underlying the functional evolution of Hox proteins. We have studied the expression of orthologs of zen (DpuHox3) and ftz (Dpuftz) in the crustacean Daphnia pulex (Branchiopoda), both of which show a dynamic expression pattern. DpuHox3 is expressed in a complex pattern in early embryogenesis, with the most anterior boundary of expression lying at the anterior limit of the second antennal segment as well as a ring of expression around the embryo. In later embryos, DpuHox3 expression is restricted to the mesoderm of mandibular limb buds. Dpuftz is first expressed in a ring around the embryo following the posterior limit of the mandibular segment. Later, Dpuftz is restricted to the posterior part of the mandibular segment. This is the first report of expression of a Hox3 ortholog in a crustacean, and together with Dpuftz data, the results presented here show that Hox3 and ftz have retained a Hox-like expression pattern in crustaceans. This is in accordance with the proposed model of Hox3 and ftz evolution in arthropods and allows a more precise pinpointing of the loss of ftz “Hox-like behaviour”: in the lineage between the Branchiopoda and the basal insect Thysanura.  相似文献

To investigate the life history and ecology of the mudskipper Periophthalmus magnuspinnatus, observations and collection were made on coastal mudflats in southern Korea. Periophthalmus magnuspinnatus was active from May to September on the mudflats, exclusively occupying rough and elevated or sloped mudflats of the seashore or the stream mouth, usually vegetated with halophilous grasses. The congeneric species, P. modestus, mainly occurred on extensive low-elevation and level mudflats with no visible vegetation. An apparent alternation of habitat use by P. modestus took place on mudflats at the stream mouth in mid-October, when P. magnuspinnatus began wintering in its burrow and P. modestus came onto the vacated mudflats to construct burrows for wintering. The active season for P. magnuspinnatus at 17°C or higher air temperature was a little shorter than that of P. modestus. Periophthalmus magnuspinnatus constructed a burrow for the entire season in the highest area of the intertidal mudflat, where they hid themselves during high tide or when frightened, whereas P. modestus were likely to use any burrow constructed by other animals or sunken places to hide. The main stomach contents of P. magnuspinnatus were crabs and gammarids. During the reproductive season from May to July, P. magnuspinnatus performed mating behaviors and constructed a spawning burrow similar to the ones known for P. modestus, except their body color turned dark and quivering body movements were observed in the mature male instead of a pink or orange body color and wiggling body movements as in P. modestus. Eggs, measuring 1.56–1.69 mm in major axis and 0.94–1.0 mm in minor axis, were laid on the ceiling and the side wall of the “J”-shaped spawning room generally known for Periophthalmus species. Young of both species started to occur on the mudflat in June.  相似文献

A pea rust fungus, Uromyces viciae-fabae, has been classified into two varieties, var. viciae-fabae and var. orobi, based on differences in urediniospore wall thickness and putative host specificity in Japan. In principal component analyses, morphological features of urediniospores and teliospores of 94 rust specimens from Vicia, Lathyrus, and Pisum did not show definite host-specific morphological groups. In molecular analyses, 23 Uromyces specimens from Vicia, Lathyrus, and Pisum formed a single genetic clade based on D1/D2 and ITS regions. Four isolates of U. viciae-fabae from V. cracca and V. unijuga could infect and sporulate on P. sativum. The eriophyoid mite Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Eriophyidae), commonly called the coconut mite, is a key pest of coconut fruits. Surveys conducted on coconut palms in Brazil revealed the predatory mites Neoseiulus paspalivorus DeLeon (Phytoseiidae) and Proctolaelaps bickleyi Bram (Ascidae) as the most commonly associated natural enemies of A. guerreronis on coconut fruits. However, virtually nothing is known about the life history of these two predators. We conducted laboratory experiments at 25 ± 0.1°C, 70–90% RH and 12:12 h L:D photoperiod to determine the life history characteristics of the two predatory mites when feeding on A. guerreronis and other potential food sources present on coconut fruits such as Steneotarsonemus furcatus DeLeon (Tarsonemidae), coconut pollen and the fungus Rhizopus cf. stolonifer Lind (Mucoraceae). In addition, the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch (Tetranychidae) was tested for its suitability as prey. Both predators, N. paspalivorus and P. bickleyi, thrived on A. guerreronis as primary food source resulting in shorter developmental time (5.6 and 4.4 days, respectively), higher oviposition rate (1.7 and 7.0 eggs/female/day, respectively) and higher intrinsic rate of increase (0.232 and 0.489 per female/day, respectively) than on any other diet but were unable to develop or lay eggs when fed T. urticae. Coconut pollen and S. furcatus were adequate alternative food sources for N. paspalivorus and Rhizopus for P. bickleyi. We discuss the relevance of our findings for natural and biological control of the coconut mite A. guerreronis.  相似文献

Genome sequence analysis of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae has revealed a cluster of 12 ORFs that are closely related to the gum gene cluster of Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris. The gum gene cluster of X. oryzae encodes proteins involved in xanthan production; however, there is little experimental evidence supporting this. In this study, biochemical analyses of xanthan produced by a defined set of X. oryzae gum mutant strains allowed us to preliminarily assign functions to most of the gum gene products: biosynthesis of the pentasaccharide repeating unit for GumD, GumM, GumH, GumK, and GumI, xanthan polymerization and transport for GumB, GumC, GumE, and GumJ, and modification of the pentasaccharide repeating unit for GumF, GumG, and GumL. In addition, we found that the exopolysaccharides are essential but not specific for the virulence of X. oryzae. Microorganisms that live in fluctuating environments must constantly adapt their behavior to survive. The host constitutes an important microenvironment in opportunistic and primary fungal pathogens like Cryptococcus neoformans (C. neoformans) and Cryptococcus gattii (C. gattii). In clonal populations, adaptation may be achieved through the generation of diversity. For fungi phenotype switching constitutes a mechanism that allows them to change rapidly. Both C. neoformans and C. gattii undergo phenotypic switching, which allows them to be successful pathogens and cause persistent disease. Similar to other encapsulated microbes that exhibit phenotypic variation, phenotypic switching in Cryptococcus changes the polysaccharide capsule. Most importantly, in animal models phenotypic switching affects virulence and can change the outcome of infection. Virulence changes because C. neoformans and C. gattii switch variants elicit different inflammatory responses in the host. This altered host response can also affect the response to antifungal therapy and in some cases may even promote the selection of switch variants. This review highlights the similarity and differences between phenotypic switching in C. neoformans and C. gattii, the two dominant species that cause cryptococcosis in humans.  相似文献
