Miniature Thermochron iButton dataloggers have transformed the ways in which researchers collect thermal data. However, one important limitation is that these dataloggers are not waterproof, which can lead to device failure and loss of data under field conditions. Several methods have been used to increase their water resistance, but no study to date has investigated whether any of these techniques affects the accuracy of temperature readings. Waterproofing potentially could affect the accuracy of iButtons by biasing temperatures or altering rates of warming and cooling. We compared temperature profiles of unmodified Thermochron iButtons (model DS1921G) to iButtons that we coated with a clear plastic dip (designed to coat tool handles) to determine whether this waterproof coating affects the accuracy of temperatures they record. We also compared temperatures recorded by uncoated and coated iButtons that were embedded within physical models that mimic frog body temperatures. Finally, we used our field data to test whether coating iButtons with plastic prevents failure of dataloggers during fieldwork. Although we found statistically significant differences between the temperatures recorded by uncoated and coated iButtons, and also between uncoated and coated iButtons embedded in frog models, these effects were relatively small (0–1.3 °C). We also found that coating iButtons with plastic reduced the likelihood of device failure under field conditions (from 8.3% to 0%). We conclude that coating Thermochron iButtons with plastic is an affordable and reliable method of waterproofing dataloggers that prevents device failure and data loss with minimal influence on temperature readings.  相似文献

Thermochron iButtons are being used increasingly by animal physiologists to measure long-term patterns of body temperature in reptiles, birds and mammals. Typically, iButtons are surgically implanted into the intraperitoneal cavity where they measure and store body temperature together with the date and time from an onboard real-time clock. In 16-bit resolution, the DS1922L iButton can store a total of 4,096 data points over pre-determined sampling intervals. iButtons have proved invaluable in measuring patterns of torpor and hibernation in animals larger than 70 g. Weighing around 3.5 g after potting with wax, iButtons are too heavy and large to implant into animals smaller than 70 g because their weight exceeds 5% of the animal’s total body weight. This paper describes how the stainless steel canister housing the DS 1922L iButton battery and circuit board can be removed to reduce the weight of the components to 1.49 g after waxing (ready for implantation) without compromising the function or battery life of the iButton. The modified iButton can be implanted into animals as small as 20–30 g. Calibration data revealed an offset of ca. 1°C on average, confirming that iButtons must be calibrated prior to implantation.  相似文献

An inexpensive method for remotely monitoring nest activity   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
ABSTRACT.   In studies of avian nest success, investigators often face the difficult task of periodically checking nest status while at the same time limiting observer influence on nest survival. Remotely monitoring nests using temperature data loggers is one method that allows for continuous data capture regarding nest status (i.e., active vs. inactive) without the negative effects associated with repeated nest checks. We used small temperature data loggers (Thermochron iButtons) to remotely monitor nests of Long-billed Curlews ( Numenius americanus ) in northeastern Nevada. Data loggers programmed to record temperature at 10-min and 20-min intervals were placed in curlew nests. Data loggers were set to collect data throughout the nesting cycle to determine onset of incubation and timing of nest failure. On average, Long-billed Curlews began incubating approximately 3 d after the first egg was laid and onset of incubation coincided with the laying of the third egg. iButtons allowed us to determine when incubation was terminated in 17 of 23 unsuccessful Long-billed Curlew nests, including 13 of 17 depredated nests. The presence of iButtons in Long-billed Curlew nests did not affect daily survival rate, egg hatchability or rate of nest abandonment. iButtons are an efficient and practical means for remotely monitoring nests of large egg-laying birds, such as the Long-billed Curlew.  相似文献

Although the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) plays a major role in mediating the peripheral stress response, due consideration is not usually given to the effects of prolonged stress on the SNS. The present study examined changes in neurotransmission in the SNS after exposure of mice (BALB/c) to stressful housing conditions. Focal extracellular recording of excitatory junction currents (EJCs) was used as a relative measure of neurotransmitter release from different regions of large surface areas of the mouse vas deferens. Mice were either group housed (control), isolation housed (social deprivation), group housed in a room containing rats (rat odor stress), or isolation housed in a room containing rats (concurrent stress). Social deprivation and concurrent stressors induced an increase of 30 and 335% in EJC amplitude, respectively. The success rate of recording EJCs from sets of varicosities in the concurrent stressor group was greater compared with all other groups. The present study has shown that some common animal housing conditions act as stressors and induce significant changes in sympathetic neurotransmission.  相似文献

Birds encounter climate at the scale of microclimates that can vary rapidly in time and space and so understanding potential vulnerability and adaptations to those microclimates requires fine‐scale measurements that accurately track thermal exposures. However, few options exist for recording the microclimates actually experienced by birds (realized microclimates). We constructed and tested a simple, low‐cost, temperature logger for recording the realized microclimates of ground‐nesting birds. We developed attachment protocols for band‐mounting Thermochron iButtons on Ring‐billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) chicks. We tested these mounted, temperature‐logging devices on 20 chicks weighing > 200 g (device weight was 4 g), attaching devices for 48 h and observing behavior before and after attachment and removal. Devices recorded temperature immediately surrounding the leg at 2‐min intervals. Recorded temperatures were strong predictors of observed thermoregulatory behaviors (panting and sitting), outperforming predictions based on air temperatures measured by basic, static approaches. Through comparison with matched controls (chicks with just a band), we detected no adverse physiological effects of devices, no effects on social or feeding behavior, and only a short‐term decrease in inactivity immediately after device attachment (likely due to increased preening). By attaching iButtons to the legs of birds, we quantified realized thermal exposure, integrating air temperature, modes of environmental heat transfer, and bird behavior at microclimatic scales. Although not yet validated for broader use, our approach (including possible miniaturization) should be suitable to measure thermal exposure of adults, not just chicks, allowing collection of data concerning thermal exposures during flight under field conditions. At ~ $25 USD per device, our approach facilitates experimental protocols with robust sample sizes, even for relatively modest budgets.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of cage size and cage enrichment. Golden hamsters were individually housed in standard cages of four different sizes and in enriched cages of three different sizes since 3 weeks of age. Each of the seven housing groups consisted of 12 hamsters. After 14 weeks of housing in their respective environments the measurements started. The mean baseline rectal temperature was significantly higher in hamsters housed in small cages than in hamsters housed in large cages. After the injection of fever-inducing lipopolysaccharide rectal temperature increased by 1 to 2 degrees C. The increase of rectal temperature and the fever index were the highest in animals housed in large cages and the smallest in animals housed in small cages. Through cage enrichment and increasing cage size the mean febrile response increased while the mean baseline rectal temperature decreased. Cage size and cage enrichment had no effect on the dispersion of the measured values. The differences in microclimate between large and small cages were too small to have an effect on thermoregulation. The results indicate that housing in small cages induce chronic stress which obviously affects thermoregulation. The findings demonstrate that the results of some physiological experiments are significantly influenced by the pre-experimental housing conditions.  相似文献

Woolly dormice, Dryomys laniger Felten and Storch (Senckenbergiana Biol 49(6):429–435, 1968), are a small (20–30 g), omnivorous (mainly insectivorous), nocturnal glirid species endemic to Turkey. Although woolly dormice have been assumed to hibernate during winter, no information exists on body temperature patterns and use of torpor in the species. In the present study, we aimed to determine body temperature patterns and use of torpor in woolly dormice under controlled laboratory conditions. Accordingly, body temperature (Tb) of woolly dormice was recorded using surgically implanted Thermochron iButtons, small and inexpensive temperature-sensitive data loggers. Woolly dormice exhibited robust, unimodal daily Tb rhythmicity during the euthermic stage before the beginning of hibernation. They displayed short torpor before they began hibernation, although the tendency to enter short torpor was different among individuals. Woolly dormice began hibernation within 1–3 days after exposure to cold and darkness, i.e., on October 22–24, and ended hibernation in the first half of April. Hibernation consisted of a sequence of multiday torpor bouts, interrupted by euthermic intervals. Thus, the patterns of hibernation in woolly dormice were similar to those observed in classical hibernating mammals.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the reaction of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) system to various stressors (fasting, crowding, cold and heat) by measuring blood ACTH and corticosterone (CORT) concentration as well as the cholesterol (CHOL) content in the adrenals. To examine the effects of stress termination, the rats were returned and kept under control conditions for the same period as that of stress duration (supposed recovery period). According to our results HPA system was activated by all the stressors applied. Heat seems to be the strongest stressor since the exposure of animals to a high ambient temperature resulted in the greatest rise of plasma ACTH concentration as well as CORT synthesis and secretion. These values remained elevated after the stress termination i.e. after the rats had been returned to room temperature. Fasting seems to be the weakest stressor given because it causes the smallest increase in blood ACTH and CORT concentrations. Moreover, in refed rats the HPA function was fully recovered. In conclusion, the various stressors applied seem to induce a different response of the HPA system as judged by quantitative changes in ACTH and CORT release.  相似文献

Fall in rectal temperature (Tre) and survival time was determined on exposure to–20°C in adult normoglycemic and diabetic (streptozotocin treated) rats and 1 h following glucose feeding or insulin administration or both and on exposure to–10°C in young rats with and without glucose feeding. The susceptibility to frostbite was determined by exposure of the limbs to freezing mixture of–19°C or–23°C. The rate of fall of Tre was less and the survival time more in glucose and insulin plus glucose treated animals. On the other hand, the rate of fall of Tre was more and the survival time less, in dia betic and insulin-treated animals. The rectal temperature at which the animal died was the same in the control and the treated animals. The susceptibility to frost bite was more in insulin treated and diabetic animals and less in glucose-fed animals. Exposure to cold during the second h after glucose or glucose plus insulin injection did not alter the blood glucose from that obtained at room temperature. In insulin-treated animals the rate of rise of blood glucose during the second h was much higher at low temperature than at room temperature. The rise in blood glucose in diabetic animals was much higher than in normoglycemic animals exposed to cold.  相似文献

Acute experiments on rats showed that intraperitoneal administration of 5 μg/kg of a bacterial toxin (pyrogenal) increases the afferent impulsation frequency in the cervical segments of vagus nerves, VN (multifiber recording), and frequency of the multineuronal activity in the solitary tract nucleus (STN); these changes were observed during the whole period of recording (10–160 min following toxin injection). Enhancement of the efferent impulsation in the VN and neuronal activity in the dorsal nucleus of the vagus nerve (DNVN) could be observed only 120–130 min after toxin administration. Under these conditions rectal temperature in experimental animals was 1.5° higher than that in control rats throughout the period of recording. Following subdiaphragmatic vagotomy, the afferent impulsation frequency in the cervical VN decreased about four times and kept on decreasing during the whole period of registration. Pyrogenal introduction evoked no changes in the direction of reactions to vagotomy. Under these conditions, body temperature of these animals was 2.5°C higher than in control vagotomized rats by the final stage of recording. Animal heating in a chamber caused no changes in the afferent impulsation frequency and resulted in a decrease in the frequency of VN efferent discharges. Involvement of the VN in the maintenance of temperature homeostasis during fever induced by the endotoxin action and by hyperthermia due to a rise in ambient temperature is discussed. This paper describes for the first time the possibility for recording the systolic pressure (SP), diastolic pressure (DP), and the mean arterial pressure (MAP) as well as the heart rate (HR) and locomotor activity (LA) in freely moving mice, using a commercially available telemetry and data acquisition system. The system comprises a new, small radio-telemetry transmitter implanted in the peritoneal cavity, a receiver board placed underneath the home cage, a multiplexer and a computer-based data acquisition system. The signals from the receiver were consolidated by the multiplexer and were stored and analysed by the computer. The telemetered pressure signals (absolute pressure) were corrected automatically for changes in atmospheric pressure measured by an ambient pressure monitor. The effects of implantation on animal behaviour, and, after the animals had recovered, the effects of handling on the SP, DP, MAP and HR were examined. The radio-telemetry system for recording the SP, DP, MAP and HR provides an accurate and reliable method for monitoring the direct effects of handling on SP, DP, MAP and HR. In addition, by using this new blood pressure (BP) transmitter, we maintain that BP measurements in freely moving mice are more efficient, reliable, and less labour-intensive than the measurement techniques described in the literature thus far.  相似文献

Adult male and female Beagle dogs (eight total) were exposed individually, in series, to each of 23 effective temperatures for a period of 2 hours or until rectal temperature increased 1.1 degrees C. Rectal temperature was measured to the nearest 0.1 degree C by thermistor probes in the pre-test condition (basal temperature) and at each 5-minute interval during the test conditions (effective temperatures between 21.1 degrees C and 34.7 degrees C). The frequency at which dogs displayed a 1.1 degree C rise in rectal temperature was related to the magnitude of the effective temperature. At an effective temperature of 32.6 degrees C or greater, 100% of the dogs displayed a 1.1 degree C rise in rectal temperature. Between an effective temperature of 29.3 degrees C and 31.4 degrees C, some animals displayed a 1.1 degree C rise while others did not. At an effective temperature of 28.4 degrees C or below no animals displayed a 1.1 degree C rise. The mean time necessary for a 1.1 degree C rise was negatively correlated (P less than 0.01) to the magnitude of the effective temperature. The minimum effective temperature necessary to increase rectal temperature by 1.1 degree C in male Beagles (29.6 +/- 1.0 degree C) was not significantly different from females (30.8 +/- 0.4 degrees C).  相似文献

A multifunction lid has been developed for a commercially available transparent animal cage which permits feeding, watering, viewing, long-term holding, and local transport of laboratory rodents on experiment while isolating the surrounding environment. The cage is airtight except for its inlet and exhaust high-efficiency particulate air filters, and it is completely steam-sterilizable. Opening of the cage's feed and water ports causes an inrush of high velocity air which prevents back-migration of aerosols and permits feeding and watering while eliminating need for chemical vapor decontamination. Ventilation system design permits the holding in adjacent cages of animals infected with different organisms without danger of cross-contamination; leaves the animal room odor-free; reduces required bedding changes to twice a month or less, and provides investigators with capability to control precisely individual cage ventilation rates. Forty-eight cages can be conveniently placed on a standard NIH "shoebox" cage rack (60 inches wide x 28 inches deep x 74 inches high) fitted with a simple manifold exhaust system. The entire system is mobile, requiring only an electrical power outlet. Principal application of the caging system is in the area of preventing exposure of animal caretakers to pathogenic substances associated with the animal host, and in reducing handling of animals and their exposure to extraneous contamination.  相似文献

The laryngeal chemoreflex (LCR), elicited by a drop of water in the larynx, is exaggerated by mild hyperthermia (body temperature = 40-41 degrees C) in neonatal piglets. We tested the hypothesis that thermal prolongation of the LCR results from heating the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), where laryngeal afferents first form synapses in the brain stem. Three- to 13-day-old piglets were decerebrated and vagotomized and studied without anesthesia while paralyzed and ventilated. Phrenic nerve activity and rectal temperature were recorded. A thermode was placed in the medulla, and the brain tissue temperature was recorded with a thermistor approximately 1 mm from the tip of the thermode. When the thermode was inserted into the brain stem, respiratory activity was arrested or greatly distorted in eight animals. However, the thermode was inserted in nine animals without disrupting respiratory activity, and in these animals, warming the medullary thermode (thermistor temperature = 40-41 degrees C) while holding rectal temperature constant reversibly exaggerated the LCR. The caudal raphé was warmed focally by approximately 2 degrees C in four additional animals; this did not alter the duration of the LCR in these animals. Thermodes placed in the NTS did not disrupt respiratory activity, but they did prolong the LCR when warmed. Thermodes that were placed deep to the NTS in the region of the nucleus ambiguus disrupted respiratory activity, which precluded any analysis of the LCR. We conclude that prolongation of the laryngeal chemoreflex by whole body hyperthermia originates from the elevation of brain tissue temperature within in the NTS.  相似文献

In adult animals, body temperature shows a 24 h rhythm that is endogenously generated. We examined the existence of 24 h rhythms of temperature in 10 newborn sheep. Four newborns, aged 5 to 28 days were kept with their mothers under nycthemeral conditions, and the remaining 6 lambs, aged 21 to 43 days, were kept with their mothers in constant light from day 3 after birth. Experiments were performed with both groups of lambs in the laboratory. Additional experiments were performed with the 6 lambs kept under constant light while they were in the pen with their mothers to rule out artifacts due to manipulation or artificial feeding. During the experiments done in the laboratory, the lambs were kept blindfolded in a canvas sling and were fed baby formula approximately every four hours (lambs kept under nycthemeral conditions) or every hour (constant light lambs). Lights were on in the room during the whole experiment. Temperature in the room was maintained at 18 +/- 0.1 degrees C (mean +/- SEM). In the experiments done in the pen, animals remained with the mother and room temperature was not controlled. In all experiments, rectal temperature was hourly measured for 24 h with a thermocouple inserted in the lamb's rectum and connected to a Philipp Schenk digital recorder. Lambs kept under nycthemeral conditions show a variation of mean rectal temperature (t degree) with a period of 24 h, that fits a cosine function (P less than 0.001): Rectal t degree (degree C) = 40.6 + 0.4 cos [15 (t-16.22)]. The mesor is 40.6, the amplitude 0.4, and the acrophase expressed in h is 16.22 (n = 4). Lambs kept under constant light show a variation of rectal temperature with a period of 24 h, independently of whether the measurements were done in the laboratory or in the pens. The acrophases varied widely in these animals, when the acrophase were synchronized so theta = 2400, mean rectal temperature showed a variation with a period of 24 h that fits the equation (P less than 0.001): Rectal t degree (degree C) = 39.5 + 0.18 cos [15 (t-0.23)]. The presence of a 24 h rhythm of rectal t degree in lambs kept under nycthemeral conditions, and its persistence in lambs kept under constant light suggests that the rhythm of rectal temperature observed in the newborn lamb is a true circadian rhythm.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Eight adult New Zealand White rabbits were exposed individually, in series, to each of 23 effective temperatures (t(eff)) until body temperature (tb) increased 1.1 degrees C or for a period of 2 hours. Body temperature was measured to the nearest 0.1 degree C using FM radio transmitters in the pre-test (baseline) condition and at 2 minute intervals during the test conditions where t(eff) ranged between 21.7 and 34.7 degrees C. The frequency at which the rabbits displayed a 1.1 degree C rise in tb was related to the magnitude of the t(eff), with 100% of the rabbits manifesting this change at t(eff) greater than 30.2 degrees C. At t(eff) of 28.4 through 30.2 degrees C, some, but not all, of the rabbits showed a 1.1 degree C rise in tb whereas none displayed the 1.1 degree C rise in tb at t(eff) below 28.4 degrees C. The mean time necessary for the 1.1 degree C rise in tb was negatively correlated (P less than 0.01) to the magnitude of the t(eff). The significantly (P less than 0.01) elevated plasma corticosterone in rabbits exhibiting 0.6 degree C and 1.1 degree C rise in tb suggests that those animals were stressed physiologically by the experimental procedure. It is concluded that the conditions associated with increased tb induce physiological changes commonly associated with stressors and that the techniques reported herein should be useful in establishing upper environmental temperature limits for housing rabbits.  相似文献

This report dealt with the change of body temperature (rectal temperature) in the newborn cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) with a view to take it as an index for their health conditions. The body temperatures of 183 newborn babies which were well cared for by their mothers was 33.0 to 37.7 degrees C about 10 hr after birth. On the other hand, the body temperatures of 21 newborn babies which were not well cared for by their mothers was very low, ranging from 24.1 to 34.8 degrees C. In five newborn monkeys which were well cared for, the body temperature averaged about 36 degrees C just after birth and then declined rapidly by 32 to 33 degrees C at 40 to 50 minutes after birth. Then it gradually began to rise, reaching 36 to 37 degrees C at 180 to 240 min after birth. In the other four newborn monkeys which were delivered by Caesarean section, the temperature was 37 to 38 degrees C just after birth. Then it decreased to 29 to 32 degrees C at 120 minutes after birth when the newborns remained singly in a cage without warming.  相似文献

—Brain glucose and glycogen concentrations have been studied in mice treated with allylglycine, 4-deoxypyridoxine and isoniazid, and the effects compared with the preconvulsive increase in brain glucose and glycogen concentration that follows d , l -methionine sulphoximine treatment. Allylglycine (180 mg/kg), 4-deoxypyridoxine (250 mg/kg), isoniazid (150 mg/kg) and d ,l -methionine sulphoximine (300 mg/kg) when given to mice at room temperature, cause a fall in rectal temperature which can be prevented by maintaining the mice in an incubator at 33-34°C. An increase in brain glucose concentration is seen after allylglycine (+ 133%), d ,l -methionine sulphoximine (+ 113%) and 4-deoxypyridoxine (+ 70%) treatment when mice are kept at room temperature and killed before convulsions occur. This is associated with a rise in blood glucose concentration after allylglycine, but not after the other drugs. Preventing the fall in rectal temperature reduces, but does not abolish, the rise in brain glucose concentration seen after allylglycine, d ,l -methionine sulphoximine and 4-deoxypyridoxine. Brain glycogen concentration increases at room temperature after D,L-methionine sulphoximine and 4-deoxypyridoxine, but in mice with maintained body temperature only 4-deoxypyridoxine produces an increase in brain glycogen. Isoniazid does not increase brain glucose or glycogen at room temperature, but reduces their concentration in mice kept in the incubator. All four drugs are known to act on amino acid metabolism; d ,l -methionine sulphoximine potently inhibits glutamine synthetase whereas 4-deoxypyridoxine, allylglycine and isoniazid inhibit glutamate decarboxylase. The connection, if any, between a block in the further metabolism of glutamate and an increase in brain glucose and glycogen is unknown.  相似文献
