Females and males of Rhinoglena frontalis (Monogononta, Epiphanidae) are observed by SEM and their external morphologies are compared. The two sexes differ in size and shape of the body. The female body is fusiform with a short, conical foot, while the male body is more slender and has a rather long foot. The rotatory apparatus (or corona) of both sexes is similar with only minor differences and consists of rows and tufts of cilia arranged around the mouth opening. The corona is made of two paired lobes lateral to the mouth and of a third prominent dorsal lobe, usually called proboscis. The three lobes are lined externally by dense rows of cilia, which constitute the cingulum, used for swimming. The central surface of the proboscis is covered with numerous longitudinal rows of cilia bent towards the mouth. The lateral lobes show, on their central surfaces, two concentric arcs of cirri (made of tightly packed cilia) bent towards the mouth. The similar organization of the rotatory apparatus of both sexes is related to the fact that the male, in this species, is able to feed and has a developed mastax and digestive system. The trophi of both sexes are illustrated and compared.  相似文献

The cytology of a pulmonary oncocytoma diagnosed by bronchial brushings is described along with the light and electron microscopic findings. Ultrastructurally, the tumor cells showed mitochondrial hyperplasia and an absence of neurosecretory granules. The possible histogenesis of pulmonary oncocytomas is discussed.  相似文献

Owing to a complex application of topical analysis and tracer technique, it is possible to carry out a light optic and electron microscopic investigation of newly formed capillaries growing in the rabbit cornea after its chemical burn. The ultrastructural analysis demonstrates certain polymorphism of morphological organization of endotheliocyte in the newly formed capillaries. There is a rather elevated amount of free ribosomes, mitochondria, microtubules and microfilaments in cytoplasm. The granular endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex are hypertrophied. Weibel--Palade bodies appear. Taking into account certain morpho-functional peculiarities of endothelial cells along the course of the growing capillaries, on the 8th day of growth three zone are distinguished: 1--area of nondifferentiated endothelium (apex of the capillary), 2--transitional zone, 3--zone of relatively differentiated endothelium situating in the place where the capillary gets off the parental vessel. According to the zones distinguished, the ways of trans-endothelial transport of molecules are investigated. In formation of the capillary barrier-transport function an important role belongs to polymorphism of the endothelial cells along the course of the growing capillary which is determined by differentiation degree of these cells depending on their participation in permeability.  相似文献

A case of ovarian dysgerminoma is reported. Both histology and cytology showed cells with distinctive anisokaryosis and large, sometimes bizarre, nucleoli as the most striking feature. A lymphocytic infiltration was present. Electron microscopy showed large convoluted nucleoli, structures resembling so-called "annulated lamellae" and glycogen particles, features that are typical of a germ-cell tumor. The cytologic, histologic and ultrastructural investigations revealed a dysgerminoma; that diagnosis was not certain on the frozen sections.  相似文献

Summary The stigmas of species inAneilema andCommelina are trifid and comprise elongate papillae. Progressive degeneration of papular cells is observed in stigmas from open flowers and at anthesis papillae may be moribund and collapsed. Fluid emanating from the hollow style flows onto the surface through ruptures in the cuticle at the interpapillar junctions into the interstices at maturity. This secretion stains positively for protein. Stigmas are of the wet type. The cuticle overlying the papillar cells is ridged and at the final stages prior to flowering this cuticle becomes detached from the underlying cellulosic wall. The sub-cuticular space so formed is filled with secretion. InAneilema species detachment of cuticle is at the papillar tip and along the lateral walls. InCommelina species the anticlinal walls of adjacent papillae are strongly attached for much of their length and thus detachment of cuticle is restricted to the papillar tip. The cell wall at the tip in both genera may proliferate forming a rudimentary transfer-cell type wall. The secretion is considered to be produced by the papillar cells. It is PAS positive but fails to stain for protein and in both the light and electron microscopes appears heterogenous.Pollen attachment, hydration, germination and early tube growth are very rapid following self-pollination, the pollen tubes entering the neck of the style within ten minutes of attachment.A unique character combination involving pollen and stigmas in these genera indicates a monophyletic origin.  相似文献

Image analysis methods were used to separate images of a large macromolecular complex, the chaperonin GroEL, in a preparation in which it is partially liganded to a nonnative protein substrate, glutamine synthetase. The relatively small difference ( approximately 6%) in size between the chaperonin in its free and complexed forms, and the absence of gross changes in overall conformation, made separation of the two types of particles challenging. Different approaches were evaluated and used for alignment and classification of images, both in two common projections and in three dimensions, yielding 2D averages and a 3D reconstruction. The results of 3D analysis describe the conformational changes effected by binding of this particular protein substrate and demonstrate the utility of 2D analysis as an indicator of structural change in this system.  相似文献

As part of an ongoing study of the intestinal tract of the Nile crocodile Crocodylus niloticus, the appearance of the small intestinal mucosa was examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The duodenum displayed ridge-like and complex primary folds, both of which were arranged in a longitudinally directed zigzag pattern. The two types of folds alternated with each other, with the second type following the zigzag contours of the first. The folds were covered with polygonal- and dome-shaped epithelial cells. The latter cell type was less common and was restricted in location to the proximal two thirds of the mucosal folds. Both types of epithelial cells were covered with stubby microvilli which displayed a distinct linear arrangement. Goblet cells were present between the absorptive cells. In the jejunum the basic pattern of the folds persisted except that both types of primary folds became tall and leaf-like. The angle of the zigzag pattern was less acute than in the duodenum. In the ileum the two types of alternating folds decreased in height and were arranged in a longitudinally directed wave-like fashion. The zigzag mucosal folds of the small intestine ended abruptly at the ileorectal junction. The rectum displayed low, irregular folds which formed occasional large, puckered, rosette-shaped structures. The particular arrangement of the intestinal folds fulfills the dual function of promoting the absorptive process and facilitating the smooth passage of the intestinal contents. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The dorsal strand of a budding ascidian, Polyandrocarpa misakiensis , was studied by light and electron microscopy. The length and morphology of this organ vary even among zooids in the same colony. After curving between the paired posterior nerve trunks, the strand turns left and terminates in a dead end. The dorsal strand of this species is one of the simplest types among ascidians, since there is no branching, no extensive nerve plexus, and no neuronal or non-neuronal endocrine cells surrounding it. The strand mainly consists of a simple cuboidal epithelium, but has several variations, such as multilayered regions, and protrusions of a cellular chain. The strand cells usually have mitochondria, free ribosomes and a Golgi complex of dictyosomal type. There are many mitotic cells in the strand epithelium. The presence, between the cerebral ganglion and dorsal strand epithelium, of cells with morphology intermediate between the strand and neuronal cells suggests that the dorsal strand might supply cellular components, such as neurones, to the cerebral ganglion in adult zooids. At the caudal end, the strand cells show ultrastructural features suggesting active protein synthesis and secretion. These cells appear to be liberated from the epithelium to release the content of their granules.  相似文献

Ultrastructural studies of hedgehog uteri (Erinaceus europaeus L.) have been made using animals in anestrus, in estrus and in estrus after sojourn of a week with a male. In estrus and anestrus the uterine epithelium is homogeneous, regularly interrupted by orifices of glands. It is composed of microvillous cells only. Microvilli decrease in number and length in anestrus. A new type of cell, a ciliated cell, appears after copulation. Probable correlation of ultrastructural aspects of endometrium with hormonal situation is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The filamentous brown algaHincksia hincksiae can be infected by a large icosahedral double-stranded DNA virus (HincV-1). The virus shows extended latency and is replicated only in cells homologous to sporangia. Virus formation was studied by transmission electron microscopy, DAPI staining, and -tubulin immunofluorescence. Inhibition of cytokineses results in multinucleate cells, which are the first indication of virus replication in productive cells; the microtubular cytoskeleton does not seem to be affected by the virus. Replication of viral DNA begins in the nuclei, which increase in size and eventually disintegrate. Virus assembly takes place in a mixed nucleo-/cytoplasm. Capsids bud from cisternae, which are interpreted as modified endoplasmic reticulum aggregated to virus assembly centres. The internal membranous component of the virus is thus derived from the endoplasmic reticulum. The particles are empty (electron translucent) when assembled, and the nucleoprotein core seems to be packaged subsequently through an opening in the capsid. A number of fine structural features not previously reported from brown algae and related to virus formation are described. Our results on Hincksia hincksiae virus are compared with observations made on various other icosahedral DNA viruses infecting eukaryotic algae and animals.Abbreviations ASFV African swine fever virus - BSA bovine serum albumin - DAPI 4,6-diamidino-phenylindole - dsDNA double-stranded DNA - EGTA ethyleneglycol-bis-(b-amino-ethyl ether)-N,N-tetraacetic acid - ER endoplasmic reticulum - FV-3 frog virus 3 - HEPES N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N-2-ethane sulfonic acid - HincV-1 Hincksia hincksiae virus type 1 - PBCV-1 Paramecium bursaria Chlorella virus 1 - PBS phosphate-buffered saline - rER rough endoplasmic reticulum - TBS Tris-buffered saline Tris tris-(hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane - VAC virus assembly centre - VLP virus-like particle - VPC virus-producing cell  相似文献

There is a paucity of information on the female reproductive biology of the caecilian amphibians when compared with the other vertebrate groups. Hence, the accumulation of nutrient reserves in the form of yolk and formation of yolk platelets were studied in Gegeneophis ramaswamii, adopting light microscopic histological and transmission electron microscopy analysis. Previtellogenic as well as vitellogenic follicles were observed in appropriate preparations. On the basis of the source and the routes of entry, we identified four types of yolk precursor materials, precursors 1 to 4. The earliest material appearing in the oocyte consists of abundant lipid vesicles during the previtellogenic phase, i.e., much before the follicular epithelium is fully established. This is a contribution from the oocyte mitochondria, which we identified as yolk precursor material 1, and it is autosynthetic. Once the follicle cell‐oocyte interface is fully established, there is an accumulation of the principal component of the heterosynthetic yolk by sequestration from the blood through the intercellular spaces between follicle cells in a pinocytic process. This we identified as yolk precursor material 2. There was also an indication of a lipidic yolk material synthesis in the follicle cells sequestered from maternal blood through the follicle cells in an endocytic process in which the macrovilli of follicle cells and the microvilli of the oocyte play a role. This we identified as yolk precursor material 3. Contribution to the yolk of peptidic, glycosidic, and/or lipidic material synthesized in the vitellogenic oocyte was also indicated. This we identified as yolk precursor material 4. The sequential development of intercellular associations and indications of synthesis/sequestration of the yolk have been traced. Thus, we report the mechanistic details of synthesis/sequestration of the yolk materials in a caecilian. J. Morphol., 2008. © 2008 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Summary The free swimming ciliated urn found in the coelomic fluid of Phascolosoma agassizii has been studied by electron microscopy. The urn is a multicellular structure composed of three cell types: (a) ciliated cells which possibly function in capturing cell debris and foreign particles; (b) cupola cells which are capable of phagocytozing latex particles; and (c) lobe cells which are capable of phagocytozing carbon particles. The lobes are separated from the ciliated cells by a semilunar area, with mucoprotein staining characteristics, containing fibrils which appear to be the structural support for the urn. Ciliated cells and lobes are attached to the semilunar area by hemidesmosomes. This work is based on a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in the Department of Biology, San Francisco State University, San Francisco, California, U.S.A.I wish to thank Dr. John C. Lee, formerly of the Department of Pathology, University of California Medical Center, San Francisco, for encouragement and use of his electron microscope facilities  相似文献
