During May 1978, samples of water were collected from 24 sites on, or associated with, the River Wey between its source south of Haslemere and Send just downstream of Guildford (approx. 57.5 km). Counts of diatom frustules, and other algae surviving the sampling technique, were analyzed by numerical taxonomic techniques. On the basis of community structure, the river was clearly separated into two regions. The seven sites along the first 18 km formed a cluster, and those of the remaining stretch formed a second cluster, which was more similar to Broadwater, a large shallow pond that discharges into the river between Godalming and Guildford (approx. 34.2 km below the source). Two methods are compared for reducing the counts obtained for each sample to a single index. 相似文献

The spatial and temporal distribution of nematodes in two low rate percolating filter bed sewage treatment plants at Carnforth and Caton, Lancashire, were investigated. Nematodes were abundant reaching densities up to 900 cm−2 of media surface. Numbers decreased down the bed and species composition displayed spatial differences with bed depth. Eight orders of nematode were represented, members of the sub-family Diplogasterinae and Rhabditinae were particularly common. A seasonal pattern of abundance was clearly apparent; two peaks occurred, one in May and a second during the winter months. Lowest numbers corresponded with periods of highest temperature. The demise of the nematodes in the spring was related to the sloughing of the surface film on the media. 相似文献

We have developed a simple mechanistic model, which simulates the temporaland spatial variability of concentrations of the diatomAulacoseira granulata in the River Murray, NSWAustralia, over large distances under different flow conditions. The modelincorporates a simple growth function determined by the availabilities ofsilica and light, and by temperature. It also includes losses due tosinking and downstream advection. The model is tested against weeklymeasurements for the period 1981-1990, at three sites separated by 1100 km.The seasonal cycle of Aulacoseira concentrations alongthe river is well represented by the model. During times of high flow, theconcentrations of Aulacoseira remain fairly uniformalong the river as the diatoms have insufficient time to grow before beingadvected downstream. 相似文献

Juvenile smelt, Osmerus mordax, were collected from four eelgrass, Zostera marina, beds in the Great Bay Estuary, two within Great Bay and two located nearer the coast. Lapillar otoliths were used to estimate the ages of the smelt and to calculate daily somatic growth based on the widths of otolith increments. Smelt collected from the Bay sites were consistently younger and shorter in total length than smelt collected from the coastal sites. A repeated measures analysis of variance found significant differences among growth trajectories of smelt grouped by their dates of birth. 相似文献

The spatial and temporal distribution of the grain aphid Sitobion avenae F. (Homoptera: Aphididae) was studied within a field of winter wheat during the summer of 1996. Sampling was done using four nested grids comprising 133 locations. Analysis by Taylor's power law gave results typical for insect populations. Analysis by SADIE (Spatial Analysis by Distance Indices) showed spatial pattern due to edge effects and sampling scale, and positive but mild spatial association, although spatial patterns were ephemeral. Reasons for these findings and the implications for integrated crop management are discussed. 相似文献

2010年研究了长江口南、北支浮游甲壳动物的空间分布特征。共采集到浮游甲壳动物50种,其中桡足类39种,枝角类11种。种类数南支高于北支;平均密度北支高于南支,南、北支分别为1.7 ind./L和61.8 ind./L。基于群落相似性矩阵的CLUSTER聚类和MDS分析显示,在群落相似性为40%时,长江口区域浮游甲壳动物群落可分为北支组、南支组1和南支组2共3组。3组的优势种有差异。浮游甲壳动物的平均密度变化趋势为北支组(61.8±22.11 ind./L)〉南支组1(3.07±2.06 ind./L)〉南支组2(0.72±0.45 ind./L)。盐度、潮汐和径流量是影响长江口南北支浮游甲壳动物种类组成、密度和空间分布差异的重要环境因素。 相似文献

Extensive sampling of strawberry plants in everbearing and June-bearing strawberry plantations and on potted plants showed
that different species of mites were spatially separated. Of the two phytophagous species recorded, Tetranychus urticae was most abundant on old leaves and Phytonemus pallidus on folded leaves and flower/fruit clusters. Predatory phytoseiid mites were found on all plant parts but different species
were spatially separated; Neoseiulus cucumeris and N. aurescens were found mostly on folded leaves and clusters, and N. californicus and Phytoseiulus persimilis on old and medium aged leaves. No Typhlodromus pyri were found in the field plantations. These patterns of distribution did not change over sampling dates in summer and early
autumn. An understanding of this within-plant zonation of mite species is important when studying predator–prey interactions
and when designing sampling strategies for strawberry. A programme to sample the entire mite system on strawberry should be
stratified to include all the above mentioned parts of the plant. Different sampling protocols, as appropriate, are required

The presence of polarizing activity in the limb buds of developing avian embryos determines the pattern of the anteroposterior axis of the limbs in the adult. Maps of the spatial distribution and the strength of the signal within limb buds of different stages are well documented. Polarizing activity can also be found in Hensen's node in the early embryo. We have mapped the distribution of polarizing activity as it emerges from Hensen's node and spreads into the flank tissue of the embryo. There is a clear change in the local pattern of expression of polarizing activity between stage 8 and 18. Almost no activity is measured for stages 8 and 9. More or less uniform levels of around 10% are spread along the flank lateral to the unsegmented somitic mesoderm from somite position 12 to 22 in stage 10 embryos. Some 6 to 8 h later at stage 12, there is a distinct peak of activity at somite position 18, the middle of the wing field. This peak increases at stages 13 to 15 and its position traverses to the posterior edge of the wing field. Full strength of activity is reached shortly before the onset of limb bud formation at stage 16 to 17. Stages 16 to 18 were investigated for polarizing activity in the wing and the leg field. Low levels of polarizing activity are present in the anterior leg field at stages 16 and 17 but have disappeared by stage 18 and all activity is confined to the posterior part of the leg bud. 相似文献

Bacterial abundance and [3H]thymidine incorporation rates wereused to characterize bacterial distributions and dynamics duringa spring diatom bloom in the coastal plume of the Hudson Riverduring March, 1981. Bacterial abundance did not decline significantlyaway from the plume or across the continental shelf. However,a pronounced gradient was observed for [3H]thymidine incorporation. Following a northeast gale, a bloom of Skeletonema costatumdeveloped in response to coastal upwelling. As the plume becamesaltier, warmer and larger, bacterial abundance averaged 1.3x 109 cells 11. Bacterial incorporation of [3H]thymidineinto cold 5% TCA insoluble materials, bacterial production andspecific growth rates averaged 80120 pmol 11 d1,1.42.0 x 109 cells 11 and 1.21.5 d1.respectively. The mean density of bacteria in the plume didnot change even though growth rates were higher than expectedlosses from sinking, mixing and export. The abundance and production levels of attached bacteria inthe plume were significantly higher than they were in coastalwater outside the plume. In contrast, free bacterial levelswere similar in all regions of the shelf and plume. Bacterialparameters in the plume were not correlated with phytoplanktonpigment concentrations, while significant positive correlationswere found in shelf waters >33 salinity. We used immunolocalization in tissue sections and cytogenetic preparations of female and male gonads to study the distribution of the proliferation marker pKi-67 during meiotic cell cycles of the house mouse, Mus musculus. During male meiosis, pKi-67 was continuously present in nuclei of all stages from the spermatogonium through spermatocytes I and II up to the earliest spermatid stage (early round spermatids) when it appeared to fade out. It was not detected in later spermatid stages or sperm. During female meiosis, pKi-67 was present in prophase I oocytes of fetal ovaries. It was absent in oocytes from newborn mice and most oocytes of primordial follicles from adults. The Ki-67 protein reappeared in oocytes of growing follicles and was continuously present up to metaphase II. Thus, pKi-67 was present in all stages of cell growth and cell division while it was absent from resting oocytes and during the main stages of spermiocytogenesis. Progression through the meiotic cell cycle was associated with extensive intranuclear relocation of pKi-67. In the zygotene and pachytene stages, most of the pKi-67 colocalized with centromeric (centric and pericentric) heterochromatin and adjacent nucleoli; the heterochromatic XY body in male pachytene, however, was free of pKi-67. At early diplotene, pKi-67 was mainly associated with nucleoli. At late diplotene, diakinesis, metaphase I and metaphase II of meiosis, pKi-67 preferentially bound to the perichromosomal layer and was almost absent from the heterochromatic centromeric regions of the chromosomes. After the second division of male meiosis, the protein reappeared at the centromeric heterochromatin and an adjacent region in the earliest spermatid stage and then faded out. The general patterns of pKi-67 distribution were comparable to those in mitotic cell cycles. With respect to the timing, it is interesting to note that relocation from the nucleolus to the perichromosomal layer takes place at the G2/M-phase transition in the mitotic cell cycle but at late diplotene of prophase I in meiosis, suggesting physiological similarity of these stages. 相似文献

Background and Objectives
Recent years have seen a rapid increase in the number of rabies cases in China and an expansion in the geographic distribution of the virus. In spite of the seriousness of the outbreak and increasing number of fatalities, little is known about the phylogeography of the disease in China. In this study, we report an analysis of a set of Nucleocapsid sequences consisting of samples collected through the trial Chinese National Surveillance System as well as publicly available sequences. This sequence set represents the most comprehensive dataset from China to date, comprising 210 sequences (including 57 new samples) from 15 provinces and covering all epidemic regions. Using this dataset we investigated genetic diversity, patterns of distribution, and evolutionary history.Results
Our analysis indicates that the rabies virus in China is primarily defined by two clades that exhibit distinct population subdivision and translocation patterns and that contributed to the epidemic in different ways. The younger clade originated around 1992 and has properties that closely match the observed spread of the recent epidemic. The older clade originated around 1960 and has a dispersion pattern that suggests it represents a strain associated with a previous outbreak that remained at low levels throughout the country and reemerged in the current epidemic.Conclusions
Our findings provide new insight into factors associated with the recent epidemic and are relevant to determining an effective policy for controlling the virus. 相似文献17.

The spatial and temporal distribution of pelagic Archaea was studied in the southern North Sea by rRNA hybridization, sequencing and quantification of 16S rRNA gene and membrane lipid analyses and related to physical, chemical and biological parameters to determine the factors influencing archaeal biogeography. A clear temporal variability was observed, with marine Crenarchaeota (Group I.1a) being relatively more abundant in winter and Euryarchaeota dominating the archaeal assemblage in spring and summer. Spatial differences in the lateral distribution of Crenarchaeota were also evident. In fact, their abundance was positively correlated with the copy number of the gene encoding the alpha subunit of crenarchaeotal ammonia monooxygenase (amoA) and with concentrations of ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and phosphorus. This suggests that most Crenarchaeota in the North Sea are nitrifiers and that their distribution is determined by nutrient concentrations. However, Crenarchaeota were not abundant when larger phytoplankton (>3 microm) dominated the algal population. It is hypothesized that together with nutrient concentration, phytoplankton biomass and community structure can predict crenarchaeotal abundance in the southern North Sea. Euryarchaeotal abundance was positively correlated with chlorophyll a concentrations, but not with phytoplankton community structure. Whether this is related to the potential of Euryarchaeota to perform aerobic anoxygenic phototrophy remains to be shown, but the conspicuous seasonal distribution pattern of Crenarchaeota and Euryarchaeota suggests that they occupy a different ecological niche. 相似文献

In the past decade, the diversity of signals generated by the ubiquitin system has emerged as a dominant regulator of biological processes and propagation of information in the eukaryotic cell. A wealth of information has been gained about the crucial role of spatial and temporal regulation of ubiquitin species of different lengths and linkages in the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway, endocytic trafficking, protein degradation and DNA repair. The Allodon River, a tributary of the Rhône, has suffered considerably from the recent expansion of human activities in the Geneva region. This study documents changes in its benthic fauna by comparing species richness before and after 1986 and by considering the possibilities of recolonization by drift.

Analysis of the data obtained during aerial survey of sea mammals in the 1980s–1990s (White and Barents seas) has revealed that, during all the seasons of the year, harp seals of the White Sea population form two types of aggregations which differ in size and some ecological features. Large herds of seals (tens of thousands of individuals) are able to occupy areas extending tens and even hundreds of kilometers. Harp seals prefer to inhabit the northern part of the population range (Barents Sea), whereas the southern part (White Sea) is mainly used for reproduction and molting. Small herds (several hundred animals) can be scattered over vast territories, but they tend to dwell in the southern part of the area including the White Sea and southern areas of the Barents Sea. The opportunity to distinguish between these two types of aggregations makes it possible to study the biological features of each of them and to specify characteristics of the species biology. 相似文献
