Aspects of the migratory life cycle and pathogenesis of Elaphostrongylus cervi were studied in red deer (Cervus elaphus) using 2 farmed calves experimentally infected with 450 third-stage larvae killed 40 and 45 days postinfection and using 3 wild calves and 3 wild yearlings with natural infections killed during autumn hunting. A full necropsy was carried out on the experimental calves, but only the head, eviscerated carcass, and lungs were examined from the naturally infected animals. Histological examination included extensive studies of the central nervous system (CNS), spinal nerve roots, and lungs. The experimental calves had prepatent infections, with many immature adult nematodes in the CNS, whereas the wild calves showed CNS lesions indicating a very recent E. cervi infection. The yearlings had patent infections, with many mature E. cervi in their skeletal muscles, reflecting acquisition of infection during the previous summer. Our findings showed that E. cervi develop to the adult stage in the CNS (subarachnoid spaces) and subsequently migrate into the skeletal muscles, where the mature nematodes live in reproductive pairs and groups. In the nervous system, the nematode caused encephalomyelitis, focal encephalomalacia and gliosis, meningitis, radiculitis, ganglionitis, and perineuritis.  相似文献

Aspects of the migratory life cycle and pathogenesis of Elaphostrongylus alces were studied in 7 randomly selected moose calves and 7 yearlings killed during August to November. One calf and 1 yearling were uninfected. The 6 infected calves had recent infections, whereas the 6 yearlings showed older infections from the summer of the previous year. The 2 calves killed in September had a total of 26 adult E. alces in the epidural space of the caudal vertebral canal and none in the skeletal muscles, whereas the remaining calves killed 1 to 2 mo later had 25 nematodes in the caudal and cranial vertebral canal and 7 in the skeletal muscles. The yearlings had a total of 101 adult E. alces in the skeletal muscles and 2 in the vertebral canal. There were no findings indicating involvement of the central nervous system in the life cycle of E. alces. Our findings suggest that E. alces migrates directly from the gut to the epidural space of the caudal vertebral canal where development to the adult stage takes place. During development, the nematode produces inflammation of the epidural tissue and spinal nerves. Development in the caudal vertebral canal is followed by some anterior dispersion of nematodes along the canal, and migration into skeletal muscles. Here the nematodes seem to live in reproductive pairs and groups. The predilection site for E. alces in moose is the muscles of the thigh.  相似文献

A series of experiments were conducted on dairy calves (Bos taurus) to assess, by way of circulating cortisol, the impact of a parasitic infection as a systemic stressor. The first study was designed to assess the effects of chronic stress on dairy calves resulting from a large bolus inoculation of the nematode parasite, Ostertagia ostertagi. Peripheral cortisol concentrations and adrenal cortical competency to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) challenge were utilized as indicators of chronic stress for 5 weeks. Calves were cleared of nematodes by anthelminthic treatment after the third week of infection. Calves were challenged with ACTH on weeks 0 and 2, and blood samples were obtained at a 12 x 10-min bleeding schedule. Cortisol concentrations were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the infected calves than in the uninfected calves. The maximal response level to the ACTH challenge was also higher while the calves were infected. Two additional experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of experimental procedures that became evident during Experiment 1. Firstly, calves that had previously been fitted with jugular cannulae were sampled from 3 hr predawn until 5 hr after dawn under red- or white-light incandescent illumination. Calves under red lights had lower initial cortisol concentrations but increased to the concentrations in calves under white lights, indicating a compounding effect of lighting with the procedures of blood-sample acquisition. Secondly, 12 calves were inoculated with 10,000, 100,000, or 200,000 third-stage, infective larvae of O. ostertagi. Blood samples were obtained similarly to the regimen in Experiment 1. Cortisol concentrations were elevated only in the 200,000-dose group during week 3, correlating with the period immediately after emergence of the young adult parasites from the gastric glands. Continuous emergence of these parasites might induce chronic hyperadrenocorticism and the concomitant negative consequences on metabolic and immunological processes.  相似文献

Five species of lung nematodes (Metastrongylus asymmetricus, M. confusus, M. elongatus, M. pudendotectus, M. salmi) and two species of stomach nematodes (Ascarops strongylina, Physocephalus sexalatus) were found in the wild boars (Sus scrofa) in France. Prevalence of lung nematodes was 92% (no significant difference between closed reserve and open areas could be demonstrated) and 97% for stomach nematodes. In both cases, intensity of infection was significantly greater in young wild boars (age less than 1 yr) than in the older animals. The importance of intermediate hosts in the transmission of these infections is emphasized by the increased prevalences and intensities in certain high risk areas and during certain seasons.  相似文献

Parasitized steers were used to contaminate 3 pastures containing dung beetle populations of different densities. Six parasite-free calves were then allowed to graze the pastures for 43 to 45 days. Two calves that grazed a pasture with dung beetle population rendered lower than normal by screening and trapping acquired 9 times more parasites than 2 calves that grazed a pasture which captured beetles were released. Two calves that grazed a pasture with a natural dung beetle population acquired 4 times more worms than the calves on pasture with the increased beetle population. The results indicated that the 2 major genera of nematodes present (Ostertagia and Cooperia) were significantly reduced in number by dung beetle activity.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the fixing properties of Mirsky's fluid on nematodes, a comparison was made with formaldehyde. On two occasions, nematodes recovered from the abomasa of calves were fixed in each of three of the following fluids: 5% formol saline, 10% formol saline, 5% Mirsky's fluid and 10% Mirsky's fluid. Based on measurements of length and microscopical examination of over 800 nematodes on each occasion, the authors concluded that Mirsky's fluid conferred no advantages over 5% formol saline or 10% formol saline for fixing nematodes.  相似文献

Studies were conducted on the behak, ior of the nematode, Rhabditis pellio, in the earthworm, Aporrectodea trapezoides, from southern California. Juvenile and adult nematodes were found in the bladders and tubules of the metanephridia of the host. Similar nematodes that entered the coelom were encapsulated and incorporated into multiple capsules ("brown bodies"). It was demonstrated that this host response is an effective defense reaction since dead and dying nematodes, as well as living forms, were found in the capsules.  相似文献

An outbreak of respiratory disease at a farmed cervid facility resulted in isolation and identification of Mycoplasma boris in four affected white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawns. Microscopically, pulmonary lesions similar to those associated with M. bovis infections in calves, inclulding lymphoplasmacytic peribronchiolar cuffing and caseonecrotic bronchiectasis, were present. Arcanobacterium pyogenes was recovered from lung tissue as well. This report indicates that M. bovis can be associated with respiratory disease in white-tailed deer.  相似文献

Experimental infections with bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) were performed to study the effect of concurrent BRSV and BVDV infections. Twelve seronegative calves, in 3 groups, were inoculated on a single occasion with pure BRSV (group A), BRSV and noncytopathogenic BVDV (group B) or mock infected (group C). Mild respiratory symptoms were recorded 4 to 5 days post inoculation (dpi) in group A and group B calves. One calf in group A was severely affected and required medical treatment. In group B, fever (40.7-41.4 °C) was prominent 7 to 8 dpi. Only calves in group B were BVDV positive in purified lymphocytes at 2 to 14 dpi and showed increased serum interferon levels, with a peak at 4 dpi, indicating BVDV to be responsible for inducing the rise. BRSV was detected in lung lavage fluids up to 7 dpi for group A calves, compared to 11 dpi for group B and calves in this group also seroconverted later displaying lower BRSV titers. The time lag before an antibody response and the titers recorded in group B, indicated that the duration of BVDV infection in lymphocytes negatively influenced the capacity to mount a BRSV antibody response. kw|Keywords|k]cattle; k]respiratory disease; k]interferon; k]PCR  相似文献

The concentrations of 2 major bovine acute-phase proteins, haptoglobin (Hp) and serum amyloid-A (SAA), were measured in plasma obtained shortly after birth from 22 healthy calves. In a separate group of diseased calves (n = 8), Hp and SAA concentrations were measured to determine whether newborn calves (up to 4 d old) are able to produce SAA and Hp. In blood samples taken directly after birth, the Hp plasma concentrations were all below the limit of detection. The mean SAA concentration was independent of weight (r = 0.063), degree of acidosis (r = -0.125), sex (p > 0.05), and were not different in calves born after different types of obstetrical help (p > 0.05). In the group of diseased calves, an increased Hp concentration was measured in only 2 of 8 animals, whereas the mean SAA concentration was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in the healthy newborn calves. These data suggest that prenatal stress due to parturition does not form a stimulus for the production of acute-phase proteins in the fetal calf. The low Hp plasma concentrations might indicate that either it takes a few days to establish a detectable concentration of this protein, or that Hp production is not fully developed in newborn calves.  相似文献

A larvoscopic examination of faeces collected from localities inhibited by chamois in the Tatra National Park (TANAP) in 1997 demonstrated the presence of the lung nematodes Muellerius spp. (likely to be M. tenuispiculatus and M. capillaris) and Neostrongylus linearis. The overall prevalence of lung nematodes in chamois herds in TANAP was 48.4% with prevalences of 45.6% and 11.9% for Muellerius spp. and N. linearis, respectively. No significant differences in lung nematode prevalences were observed in the biotopes of TANAP with prevalence values of 44.9% being recorded in the High Tatras and 58.5% in the Belianske Tatras. Individual species were in equal proportion in both biotopes, although N. linearis was significantly less prevalent (11.2-13.8%). The prevalence of lung nematodes in the High Tatras varied from 25.0 to 84.2% within individual localities, while in the Belianske Tatras it was more proportionate (50.0-85.7%). In the High Tatras, the prevalence of lung nematodes in the chamois herds peaked during August, declining to its lowest in October. A similar prevalence was also recorded for Muellerius species, while the minimum prevalence of N. linearis was found in July. In the Belianske Tatras, the prevalence of lung nematodes including both species of Muellerius peaked in July and gradually decreased until October. On the other hand, N. linearis was most prevalent in October. The mean L1 count per gram faeces was low (7.6 +/- 13.2 larvae g-1).  相似文献

The role of T-cell subsets in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection was investigated by using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) to selectively deplete gnotobiotic calves of CD4+, CD8+, or WC1+ gamma delta T-cell receptor+ lymphocytes. Injection of these MAbs produced specific reductions of the target cell populations in the circulation and tissues. Ten days after RSV infection, immunoglobulin M (IgM), IgG1, and IgA antibodies were detected in sera and lung washings from control calves. Depletion of CD8+ T cells had no effect on either the serum or local antibody responses to RSV, whereas depletion of CD4+ T cells suppressed the antibody responses in two of three calves. The IgM and IgA responses were significantly increased in the lung washings of calves from which WC1+ T cells were depleted. Depletion of CD4+ or WC1+ T cells caused no significant delay in virus clearance, although an increase in the extent of pneumonic consolidation was observed in anti-CD4-treated calves. Nasopharyngeal excretion of RSV was prolonged in calves depleted of CD8+ T cells, and virus was isolated in high titers from lung washings of these animals 10 days after infection, whereas virus had been cleared from lung washings of all other animals. The delayed virus clearance was associated with an increase in the severity of pneumonic consolidation in three of four of the calves from which CD8+ T cells were depleted. This study shows that CD8+ T cells play a dominant role in the recovery of calves from RSV infection.  相似文献

An experiment was performed on semiwild reindeer with naturally acquired parasite infections to assess whether measures of serum pepsinogen concentration and fecal egg counts can be used to predict effects of abomasal nematodes on reindeer weight gain and food intake. Food intake and weight gains were lower in infected calves compared with calves where parasites had been removed by anthelmintic treatment. Among the infected animals, concentration of pepsinogen in serum was correlated with food intake and weight gains. Concentration of abomasal nematode eggs in feces was not. Our results suggest that measures of pepsinogen levels in serum, but not fecal egg counts, may be used to predict the effects of abomasal nematodes on food intake and weight gain of reindeer.  相似文献

The effects of low levels of both biting and sucking lice, a mixed population of nematodes, and a combination of all these parasites were evaluated in calves held in a barn with no environmental controls in central Texas. Observations at 122 sites on each animal for 16 wk consecutively in 1987 revealed that the largest numbers of all louse species [Haematopinus eurysternus (Nitzsch). Linognathus vituli (L.), and Bovicola bovis (L.)] occurred 3-7 wk after infestation. In 1988 L. vituli populations decreased rapidly after the 3rd wk and B. bovis remained fairly constant for 20 wk consecutively. Average nematode egg counts increased to approximately 300 eggs per gram of feces in 1987 and approximately 600 eggs per gram of feces in 1988. The nematodes Ostertagia ostertagia, Haemonchus placei, Oesophagostomum radiatum, Cooperia spp., and Trichostrongylus spp. were present at the end of the study in both years as determined by necropsy. No significant differences in erythrocyte count, mean cell volume, hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, leukocyte counts, or serum albumin concentration were detected. However, significant increases in total serum protein concentration and serum globulin levels in calves harboring both groups of parasites were observed. Mean weight gain in calves infested with lice and nematodes was 11.4 and 10 kg less than that of uninfested controls during 16 wk in 1987 and 20 wk in 1988, respectively.  相似文献

The efficacy of different species of entomopathogenic nematodes was tested against larvae of the mushroom phorid Megaselia halterata (Diptera: Phoridae) and the mushroom sciarid Lycoriella auripila (Diptera: Sciaridae). Sciarid larvae originating from infestations in casing soil during colonization by Agaricus bisporus were almost completely controlled by applications of Steinernema feltiae to the casing soil. When larvae originated from infestations in freshly spawned compost, they could be controlled by compost applications halfway through spawnrunning and by very early casing treatments. The control of phorids in compost was maximally 31% when nematodes were mixed within the infested compost at a concentration of 3 106 nematodes/m2. Only slightly higher reduction rates were obtained at higher concentrations. The control of phorids was more promising in the infested casing layer, in which S. carpocapsae was most successful. At concentrations of 6 and 15 106 nematodes/m2 this species obtained reduction rates of 65 and 73% respectively when it was applied 3 days after the end of the infestation period. These concentrations are, however, too high for practical application.  相似文献

Coevolution was studied in six species of rodents of the genus Ctenomys and their parasitic nematodes of the genus Paraspidodera , collected in Bolivia. Representatives of the families Octodontidae and Caviidae were used as outgroups for the mammals, and nematodes from caviids were used as outgroups of the nematodes from ctenomyids. For the nematodes, quantitative and qualitative morphological characteristics of both males and females and electrophoretic characters of both sexes were used to generate phylogenetic hypotheses of evolutionary relationships of the OTUs occurring in hosts of different species. Concordance estimates of cladograms generated from biochemical—genetic and morphological data of the nematodes show a percentage incongruence (Mickevich-Farris Incongruence Statistic or I MF) of 8.23% in the character sets. Parsimony mapping, testing concordance of topologies between the trees derived from both analysis of both morphological and biochemical—genetic data indicates an overall agreement of 82.3°. Comparisons of topologies of the host and parasite cladograms, as measured with parsimony mapping, showed 70.8% concordance, indicating substantially more cospeciation than host-switching in the Ctenomys-Paraspidodera host-parasite system. Nematodes of the genus Paraspidodera appear to have invaded the Ctenomys lineage from an origin in caviids sometime before the ctenomyids began to diversify in early Pleistocene time.  相似文献

An opossum (Didelphis virginiana) live-trapped on Parramore Island, Virginia was infected with the lung parasite Capillaria didelphis. Lung lesions associated with this parasite were extensive and consisted of numerous areas with central necrosis deep within the parenchyma. Necrotic foci were present around airways and consisted of a mixture of inflammatory cells and cellular debris, adult nematodes and many bipolar eggs. This parasite causes severe verminous pneumonia in the opossum.  相似文献

Tissue samples and feces were collected from a dead, adult female coyote (Canis latrans) found at the side of the road in late March 2003 in the Avalon Peninsula region of Newfoundland, Canada. The coyote apparently died of vehicular-related trauma. Samples of lung, brain, heart, liver, and kidney were fixed in formalin and submitted for histologic examination. The entire remaining lung and heart also were submitted for examination. The coyote was diagnosed with moderate, multifocal, granulomatous interstitial pneumonia with eosinophilic vasculitis and many intralesional nematode eggs, larvae, and occasional intravascular adult worms. Adult nematodes recovered from the pulmonary arteries were identified as Angiostrongylus vasorum. Small foci of granulomatous inflammation, often containing nematode eggs and larvae, were scattered in the brain and kidney. To our knowledge, this is the first report of A. vasorum infection in a coyote from the only endemic area of infection in North America.  相似文献

Four okapi calves were monitored from birth for specific behavioral and physiological developmental phenomena. Substantial changes are appropriate in defining normal ranges and averages of some behavioral landmarks previously reported in the literature (i.e., birth weight, first time standing, first attempt to nurse, first successful nurse, and first defecation). Simple, minimally invasive habituation techniques were used to collect daily body temperatures and weights for the four calves from birth to at least 90 days of age. Body temperatures for this time period averaged 38.07°C. Okapi calves appear to take from 51 to 60 days of age to thermoregulate efficiently. The calves grow rapidly, doubling their birth weight within approximately four weeks (28 days), and tripling it by seven weeks of age (49 days). © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Sucking duration in ungulates does not only mean milk transfer, but is also associated with maternal care in general. It seems to be a reflection of offspring demand rather than solely milk transfer rate. Thus, the objective of this study was to discriminate between sucking and allosucking (i.e. sucking non-maternal hind) behaviour in red deer according to the sucking duration. We hypothesized that: (1) calves should suck longer from their mothers than allosuck from non-maternal hinds; (2) sucking duration of calves frequently nursed by a particular non-maternal hind should be longer than that of calves occasionally allonursed; (3) sucking duration should be longer for bouts including one calf than two or more calves sucking simultaneously; (4) male calves should suck and allosuck longer than female calves; and (5) primiparous hinds should nurse and allonurse longer than multiparous hinds. We observed sucking behaviour of 25 hinds and their 38 calves (from birth until the youngest calf reached one month of age) in two seasons. We recorded 1730 sucking bouts, of which 11.62% in the first season and 4.37% in the second season were non-filial. The duration of filial sucking was significantly longer than non-filial sucking. A large individual variance in the incidence of non-filial sucking in both the calves and hinds was found. Therefore, the non-filial hind–calf pairs were categorized in two clusters according to the frequency of nursing non-filial calves for one hind in relationship to all nursing events for this hind by a cluster analysis (PROC CLUSTER, SAS). We used a general linear mixed model, GLMM (PROC MIXED, SAS) to test the influence of hind relationship to the nursed calf (filial, frequently allosucking non-filial, or occasionally allosucking non-filial pair). Sucking duration of occasionally allosucking non-filial calves was only marginally different from that of filial calves. There was no difference between the two groups of non-filial calves. Multiple sucking bouts were shorter than those with one calf. Male calves sucked longer than female calves; however, the greatest difference was recorded between frequently allosucking non-filial pairs of both sexes. Frequently allosucking non-filial males sucked the longest and differently from occasionally allosucking non-filial males. Frequently allosucking non-filial females sucked the shortest and differently from filial calves of both sexes. It is more likely that allosucking seems to be more important for male rather than female calves. Therefore, it is concluded that allosucking calves differ in their sucking behaviour and two types of allosuckers (frequent and occasional) should be taken into account when analyzing allosuckling behaviour.  相似文献
