Abstract.
  • 1 The feeding cycle for male tsetse flies and the pregnancy cycle for females are used as frameworks for investigating the field behaviour of Glossina morsitans centralis Machado in Zambia, and hence the sampling biases of different capture devices.
  • 2 Flies were collected in the field using hand nets and an electric back pack on foot patrols, and hand nets, hand-catching and an electric screen on landrover patrols. They were analysed for wing-fray, vein-length, chloroform-extractable fat and haematin. In addition, samples of laboratory-bred females killed daily during their second pregnancy cycle were analysed for the last two parameters.
  • 3 The daily flying time of males is estimated from the fat—haematin curve to be about 32 min/day, which is identical to previous estimates for G. morsitans from Tanzania.
  • 4 From the varying numbers and fat content of male flies caught by the different sampling methods during the course of the feeding cycle it is concluded that both haematin levels and fat reserves influence fly behaviour.
  • 5 Comparison of the frequency distribution of wild-caught and laboratory-bred females along the corrected residual dry weight axis of the pregnancy cycle suggests that the results of combined electric-trap and hand-net sampling reflect the actual frequency distribution in the wild population at least for the first 7 days of the pregnancy cycle; but females in the last 2 days of their pregnancy cycle are apparently unavailable to sampling devices, perhaps because of their reduced flight activity.
  • 6 The very variable percentage female catch (10.9–43.4%) returned by the different sampling methods is discussed in the light of the detailed analysis of the differential availability of male and female flies to each capture device.

Abstract.
  • 1 The spatial distributions of two tephritid flies (Urophora stylata (Fabricius) and Terellia serratulae L.) attacking thistle flower heads and the levels of parasitism from their associated parasitoid guilds were studied over a 7-year period.
  • 2 Using these data it is possible to seek both temporal, density dependent relationships between average levels of parasitism and host density per generation, and also any spatial patterns of parasitism contributing to stability that may be operating within the same field system.
  • 3 Parasitism by the two most important generalist parasitoids of T.serratulae is a direct function of average T.serratulae density per year. There is little evidence of any stabilizing heterogeneity arising from the spatial distribution of parasitism within generations.
  • 4 Temporal density dependence of Urophora stylata cannot be confirmed from the 7 years of study but there is evidence of spatial heterogeneity which may have an important effect on the dynamics of the host population.

Abstract.
  • 1 The relationship between parasitization by Edovum puttleri Grissell and density of eggs of the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), was studied on two spatial scales (eggs mass and 6 m2 cage).
  • 2 For both scales, rates of parasitism were generally inversely related to host density for periods ranging from 2 to 8 days after parasitoid release. Thereafter, parasitism became independent of host density.
  • 3 The initial inverse-density relationship and subsequent shift to density independence may result from several factors: (1) ambient temperatures, (2) the parasitoid's limited egg production, (3) differential times of exposure of egg masses to parasitoids, and/or (4) the parasitoid's patterns of host feeding and oviposition.
  • 4 Although overall levels of parasitism were relatively low, total mortality of L.decemlineata eggs (including nonviable and cannibalized eggs, and those killed by parasitoid feeding) in parasitized egg masses was consistently high (?70–90%).

When a fixed number of the hosts, the eggs of the almond moth were exposed experimentally to various numbers of the parasites, Trichogramma japonicum, the following changes were observed with increasing parasite density:
  1. The percentage of parasitism rises and approaches to 100 with gradually diminishing rate.
  2. The number of parasite progeny increases and reaches a maximum, then decreases gradually.
  3. The number of eggs laid per parasite female decreases gradually.
  4. The proportion of hyperparasitized hosts progressively rises. The frequency distribution of parasite eggs in a host is of an intermediate type between random and uniform.
  5. The competition among parasite larvae becomes severe. The progressive rise in mortality, the declining percentage of females in progeny and the emergence of stunted adults at the higher densities are observed.
In connection with both the nature of the parasitizing behaviour of adult and that of the competition among larvae, the nature of the density effect on the parasite population was discussed.  相似文献

  1. Spatial patterns of parasitism of eumenid wasps Anterhynchium flavomarginatum and Orancistrocerus drewseni by the miltogrammine fly Amobia distorta were studied in Kyoto, Japan during 1980–1984.
  2. In generations of low (<5%) and medium (5–20%) parasitism, percent parasitism per shed (the habitat of the hosts) increased as a function of host density. Conversely, in generations of high (>20%) parasitism, percent parasitism was rather constant over different host densities.
  3. The spatial distributions of adult miltogrammine flies among sheds were censused in generations of low and medium parasitism. The frequency of observations of adult miltogrammine flies was higher at sheds of higher host density (aggregative behavioral response), but on the other hand, the adult miltogrammine flies distributed in an underdispersed (or regular) manner in relation to other conspecifics.
  4. The spatially density independent relationship between host density and percent parasitism in generations of high parasitism was explained in relation to parasitoid dispersal from patches of high parasitoid density.

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 A field study was made of foraging time allocation by a population of parasitic wasps, Diadegma spp. (Ichneumonidae), to plants containing different densities of their hosts, the caterpillars of Plutella xylostella (L.).
  • 2 The parasitoid population exhibited a clear aggregative response, spending more total time on higher density patches, which probably resulted from wasps making more and longer visits to these densities.
  • 3 Despite this aggregation, positive density dependent parasitism was not found. The functional response of the Diadegma population exhibited an upper asymptote at high host densities, probably due to an increase in the proportion of time spent handling hosts, which countered the effect of aggregation.
  • 4 While Diadegma may select and forage preferentially on plants with higher host density, they do not exhibit the tendency, predicted by some optional foraging models, to exploit progressively less profitable plants during a foraging bout. Some factors affecting patterns of parasitoid foraging in the field are discussed.

Abstract.
  • 1 Life tables and rates of parasitism were tabulated from mud nests built by Trypoxylon politum (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) at nine different nesting sites from Missouri and Mississippi.
  • 2 Most developmental mortality occurred either during the first two instars of development, or during the inactive prepupal phase. The majority (76%) of deaths were caused by insect parasitoids and cleptoparasites. Levels of parasitism and survivorship varied among nesting sites, and among locations within the two sites surveyed at a fine spatial scale.
  • 3 Total developmental mortality, K, was positively associated with the number of hosts (immature T.politum) per site. Within one of two sites sampled at a fine spatial scale, K was negatively associated with the local density of hosts. Levels of total parasitism were positively associated with host population size, and negatively associated with local host density within one of the two sites sampled at a fine spatial scale.
  • 4 Levels of parasitism by Melittobia (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) were positively associated with the number of hosts per site, but negatively associated with the local density of hosts within sites. Melittobia parasitism was also negatively associated with the local density of old nesting material within sites.
  • 5 Parasitism by Melittobia was a function of both the numbers of nests per quadrat and the mean nest size per quadrat at one of the two sites surveyed at a fine scale. At the other site, parasitism by Melittobia was a function of mean nest size per quadrat.
  • 6 The life cycle and nesting behaviour of T.politum, in relation to the regulation of its numbers, is discussed.

  1. The functional response to, and preference for, the host density in a parasite were examined experimentally using an icheumon wasp, Exidechthis canescens, and its host Cadra cautella under controlled conditions.
  2. Wasps were more active in host-searching at higher than lower host densities. Percent parasitism increased rapidly with initial increments in host density and then tended to increase more slowly at higher host densities. A sigmoid functional response curve is indicated, which implies that the parasite is able to control its host even at low densities.
  3. Wasps actively selected areas of high host density in which to concentrate host-searching behavior.
  4. Host-searching by E. canescens is stimulated by the odor of the host when present, and by food in which hosts have developed but have been removed.
  5. Both the functional response and the host-density preference of the parasite are mediated by its host-searching behavior. This relationship is discussed in the context of population regulation.

  • 2 Wild populations of Trichogramma Westwood egg parasitoids are utilized for the biological suppression of the potentially resistant pest species Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) in Bt‐transgenic cotton Gossypium hirsutum L. crops in the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA), Western Australia, Australia.
  • 3 Extensive, spatially‐stratified sampling during a season of relatively high Trichogramma abundance found that spatial patterns of pest egg parasitism in the ORIA tend toward heterogeneity, and do not necessarily coincide with host spatio‐temporal dynamics. Both patterns of host egg density and mean rates of parasitism are not good indicators of parasitoid spatio‐temporal dynamics in ORIA cotton crops.
  • 4 Parasitism rates can be significantly higher within the middle strata of the cotton plant canopy before complete canopy closure, despite a similar number of host eggs being available elsewhere in the plant.
  • 5 Spatial variation in egg parasitism by Trichogramma in Bt‐transgenic cotton is evident at the between‐field, within‐field and within‐plant scale, and is not solely driven by host spatial dynamics. These factors should be considered when estimating Trichogramma impact on pest species during biological control and spatio‐temporal studies of host‐parasitoid interactions in general.

Abstract.
  • 1 In natural populations, colonies of bumble bees vary in many important life history traits, such as colony size and age at maturity, or the number and sex of reproductives produced. We investigated how the presence of parasites in field populations of the bumble bee Bombus lucorum L. relates to variation in life history traits and reproductive performance. A total of thirty-six colonies was placed in accessible nest sites in the field and monitored at regular intervals throughout a season.
  • 2 Among the life history correlates, early nest foundation was strongly associated with large maximum colony size, old age and large size at maturity, and this in turn with successful production of males and queens, as well as with the number of sexuals produced. Overall, reproductive success was highly skewed with only five colonies producing all the queens. Sixteen colonies failed to reproduce altogether.
  • 3 The social parasite Psithyrus was abundant early in the Bombus colony cycle and preferentially invaded host nests with many first brood workers and thus disproportionately large size, i.e. those colonies that would otherwise be more likely to reproduce or produce (daughter) queens rather than males. To prevent nest loss, Psithyrus had to be removed soon after invasion. Therefore, the effects reported here can only be crude estimates.
  • 4 Parasitoid conopid flies are likely to cause heavy worker mortality when sexuals are reared by the colonies. Their inferred effect was a reduction in biomass that could be invested in sexuals as well as a shift in the sex ratio at the population level resulting from failure to produce queens. We suggest to group the inferred correlates into ‘early events’ surrounding colony initiation and social parasitism, and ‘late events’ surrounding attained colony size in summer and parasitism by conopid flies. Our evidence thus provides a heuristic approach to understand the factors that affect reproductive success of Bombus colonies.

  • 1 Sown flower habitats not only are employed in agri‐environment schemes in the European Union to enhance pollinators and birds, such as partridges, but also are hypothesized to contribute to the biological control of pests such as the rape pollen beetle Meligethes aeneus Fabr. by improving habitat and resource availability for its specialized parasitoids.
  • 2 In the present study, we selected 20 sown flower fields that included one of the pollen beetles' host plants Sinapis alba L., each centred in a landscape of varying complexity, to test the influence of the surrounding landscape structure on parasitism rate and herbivory by M. aeneus. Additionally, plant cover of S. alba plants within the sown flower fields and numbers of S. alba flowers were also included in the analyses.
  • 3 Landscapes with high proportions of semi‐natural habitats supported higher parasitism rates, and sown flower fields with dense S. alba plant cover hosted more parasitoids and suffered from less herbivory.
  • 4 We conclude that sown flower fields are not only important for pollinators and birds, but also are long‐term undisturbed, unploughed, insecticide‐free habitats with rich food (nectar/pollen) and host resources for parasitoids, contributing to the build‐up and maintenance of large parasitoid populations, which are important biocontrol agents of rape pollen beetles.

  • 1 New data on the phylogeny of the braconid subfamily Euphorinae supports the hypothesis that parasitism of adult insects by Euphorinae originated during parasitism of Chrysomelidae, a group whose larvae are ecologically coincident with adults.
  • 2 Evolution of the habit of attacking the adult stage opened a new adaptive zone; subsequently the Euphorinae have diversified on to a phylogenetically greater variety of hosts than any other braconid subfamily.
  • 3 Parasitism of eumastacid grasshoppers evolved from beetle parasitism in the tribe Perilitini.
  • 4 The tribe Euphorini shows the greatest diversity of hosts utilized. Most attack Heteroptera; however, Chrysopopthorus diversified on to adult Chrysopidae, Euphoriella on to Psocoptera, and Cryptoxilos on to Scolytidae.
  • 5 Parasitism of bark beetles (Scolytidae) has evolved independently in three genera: Cosmophorus, Cryptoxilos and Ropalophorus. This is the most specialized form of beetle parasitism by euphorines, since it involves direct parasitism of concealed hosts.
  • 6 Parasitism of adult hymenopterans by the tribe Syntretini may be related to attacking hosts while they are foraging at flowers.
  • 7 The pattern of diversification in the Euphorinae indicates several adaptive radiations within host orders, as well as a history of major host-shifts between phylogenetically distantly-related host groups: Coleoptera to Orthoptera; Coleoptera to Hymenoptera; Coleoptera to Heteroptera; Heteroptera to Neuroptera, Psocoptera, and back to Coleoptera. Both the‘host taxonomy’and‘host habitat’hypotheses of host-shifting are supported. Host-shifts have involved hosts occurring in the same micro-habitat and usually having similar feeding habits. This is consistent with current theory of host-location by means of host-produced kairomones and visual cues.
