The treatment of cryptococcosis is hampered by inefficacy or intolerance to the recommended antifungal agents. A patient diagnosed with AIDS had multiple relapses of cryptococcal infection, which became refractory to antifungal agents during the course of therapy. During the follow-up, the patient developed renal toxicity due to amphotericin B use and non-susceptibility of isolated Cryptococcus neoformans to fluconazole was detected. Thereafter, antifungal treatment was performed exclusively with liposomal amphotericin B, reaching a cumulative dose of 19,180 mg over 46 months. The final relapse of cryptococcosis occurred during the maintenance phase with liposomal formulation in a once-weekly dose. Measurement of the minimum serum concentrations of amphotericin B, determined sequentially before and after this relapse, suggested the importance of monitoring drug levels when the liposomal formulation is used for a long period.  相似文献

Opportunistic pathogens have become of increasing medical importance over the last decade due to the AIDS pandemic. Not only is cryptococcosis the fourth-most-common fatal infectious disease in sub-Saharan Africa, but also Cryptococcus is an emerging pathogen of immunocompetent individuals. The interaction between Cryptococcus and the host''s immune system is a major determinant for the outcome of disease. Despite initial infection in early childhood with Cryptococcus neoformans and frequent exposure to C. neoformans within the environment, immunocompetent individuals are generally able to contain the fungus or maintain the yeast in a latent state. However, immune deficiencies lead to disseminating infections that are uniformly fatal without rapid clinical intervention. This review will discuss the innate and adaptive immune responses to Cryptococcus and cryptococcal strategies to evade the host''s defense mechanisms. It will also address the importance of these strategies in pathogenesis and the potential of immunotherapy in cryptococcosis treatment.The basidiomycetous yeast genus Cryptococcus includes the two medically important pathogens C. neoformans and C. gattii. These two species are further divided into C. neoformans serotypes A (C. neoformans var. grubii), D (C. neoformans var. neoformans), and A/D and C. gattii serotypes B and C (formerly C. neoformans var. gattii) based on differential antibody recognition of the polysaccharide capsule (135). The two pathogenic species show different geographical distributions. C. neoformans is globally distributed and has been isolated from various natural sources, with particularly high concentrations occurring in avian guano, rotting vegetables, and soil. In contrast, C. gattii is geographically restricted to tropical and subtropical regions, with the notable exception of British Columbia. In tropical and subtropical regions, it has been found to be associated with the eucalyptus species Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus tereticornis, Eucalyptus rudis, and Eucalyptus gomphocephala (64, 172). C. neoformans causes mainly opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients with underlying conditions, such as HIV, leukemia, and other cancers, or in those taking corticosteroid medication (135). Serotype A is responsible for the majority of cryptococcosis cases in immunocompromised hosts (135). In contrast, C. gattii affects mainly immunocompetent individuals. The recent and spreading cryptococcosis outbreak in healthy individuals in British Columbia has highlighted the potential of C. gattii to act as an emerging pathogen (84, 85, 121). In addition, other non-C. neoformans/non-C. gattii species, such as Cryptococcus laurentii and Cryptococcus albidus, have recently started to emerge as potential human pathogens (83).Cryptococcal infection can be asymptomatic, chronic, or acute. Typically, an initial pulmonary infection can spread systemically, with a particular predilection for the central nervous system. Pulmonary infections are in most cases asymptomatic. However, they can involve coughing, pleuritic chest pain, fever, dyspnoea, weight loss, and malaise. Pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome have been reported mainly for immunocompromised patients (17, 141). Cryptococcosis of the central nervous system is life threatening and presents as meningitis or meningoencephalitis, with symptoms such as headache, increased intracranial pressure, fever, lethargy, coma, personality changes, and memory loss. Less common are secondary infections of the skin, lungs, prostate, and eye (135). A recent publication estimated 957,900 cases of cryptococcal meningitis resulting in 624,700 deaths globally each year (150). It is the leading cause of death in HIV-infected individuals, with an incidence of 30% and a mortality of 30 to 60%. The mortality rate in transplant patients is even higher (20 to 100%) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) (135).The dramatic course of Cryptococcus infections in immunocompromised individuals shows the importance of an intact immune response to the pathogen. This review will consider both the host''s innate and adaptive immune responses to C. neoformans and C. gattii together with the pathogens'' strategy to undermine these defense mechanisms and how current knowledge might be applied to improve anticryptococcal therapy.  相似文献

Background

Cryptococcus neoformans causes serious disease in immunocompromised individuals, leading to over 600,000 deaths per year worldwide. Part of this impact is due to the organism''s ability to thwart what should be the mammalian hosts'' first line of defense against cryptococcal infection: internalization by macrophages. Even when C. neoformans is engulfed by host phagocytes, it can survive and replicate within them rather than being destroyed; this ability is central in cryptococcal virulence. It is therefore critical to elucidate the interactions of this facultative intracellular pathogen with phagocytic cells of its mammalian host.

Methodology/Principal Findings

To accurately assess initial interactions between human phagocytic cells and fungi, we have developed a method using high-throughput microscopy to efficiently distinguish adherent and engulfed cryptococci and quantitate each population. This method offers significant advantages over currently available means of assaying host-fungal cell interactions, and remains statistically robust when implemented in an automated fashion appropriate for screening. It was used to demonstrate the sensitivity of human phagocytes to subtle changes in the cryptococcal capsule, a major virulence factor of this pathogen.

Conclusions/Significance

Our high-throughput method for characterizing interactions between C. neoformans and mammalian phagocytic cells offers a powerful tool for elucidating the relationship between these cell types during pathogenesis. This approach will be useful for screens of this organism and has potentially broad applications for investigating host-pathogen interactions.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to evaluate the epidemiology of nosocomial candidemia in a tertiary hospital in South Brazil and the in vitro antifungal susceptibility of isolates. Blood strains from 108 patients were identified by PCR-based method. Some 30.5 % of candidemia were caused by Candida tropicalis, 28.7 % were due to Candida albicans, 24.1 % with Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto, 8.3 % with Candida glabrata sensu lato, 1.8 % involved Candida krusei and 6.6 % with other species. Candidemia was more common in intensive care unit settings (66 %). In vitro susceptibility to antifungal drugs was determined by a microdilution method; and new species-specific clinical breakpoints for fluconazole and voriconazole were applied. Overall susceptibility rates were 100 % for itraconazole, 91 % for fluconazole, 98 % for voriconazole and 99 % for amphotericin B. Fluconazole resistance was mostly among C. parapsilosis sensu stricto isolates (26.9 %). Most of the findings reported here agreed with epidemiological features common to other tertiary hospitals in Brazil; but also revealed some peculiarities, such as a high frequency of C. tropicalis associated with candidemia. Besides, high rate of fluconazole resistance among C. parapsilosis stricto sensu isolates was obtained when applying the new species-specific clinical breakpoints.  相似文献

Mice were immunized with purifiedCryptococcus neoformans soluble polysaccharide, or with the polysaccharide coupled to methylated bovine serum albumin or methylated bovine gamma globulin. The polysaccharide-methylated protein complexes were no more immunogenic than the purified polysaccharide when used without Freund's incomplete adjuvant; however, the methylated protein complexes induced higher levels of antibody than purified polysaccharide when emulsified in the adjuvant. Sera from mice were titrated by passive hemagglutination, and maximum antibody titers were observed 14 to 21 days after immunization. Antibody titers declined rapidly after 14 to 21 days in mice immunized with antigen alone; whereas, animals immunized with cryptococcal antigen emulsified in adjuvant remained at peak levels throughout a six week experimental period. All antigens were immunogenic over a wider dosage range when contained in adjuvant. Individual mice immunized with an adjuvant emulsion of purified polysaccharide varied widely in the amount of antibody produced, with some of the animals producing no detectable antibody.  相似文献

Cryptococcus is the most common fungal respiratory pathogen in Australian horses, manifesting primarily as pulmonary granulomas. Disease severity at presentation is dependent on the athletic use of the horse. The diagnosis and estimation of disease severity are centred around clinical findings, cytological evaluation of respiratory tract secretions, diagnostic imaging, and antigen titre testing. Both the lateral flow assay and the latex cryptococcal antigen titre are used, and important similarities and differences between species are discussed. Cryptococcus gattii occurs with greater frequency than Cryptococcus neoformans in equine pulmonic cryptococcosis and can be successfully treated with enteral fluconazole monotherapy, with disease severity determining treatment length.  相似文献

Objective

We have previously reported high ten-week mortality from cryptococcal meningitis in Malawian adults following treatment-induction with 800mg oral fluconazole (57% [33/58]). National guidelines in Malawi and other African countries now advocate an increased induction dose of 1200mg. We assessed whether this has improved outcomes.

Design

This was a prospective observational study of HIV-infected adults with cryptococcal meningitis confirmed by diagnostic lumbar puncture. Treatment was with fluconazole 1200mg/day for two weeks then 400mg/day for 8 weeks. Mortality within the first 10 weeks was the study end-point, and current results were compared with data from our prior patient cohort who started on fluconazole 800mg/day.

Results

47 participants received fluconazole monotherapy. Despite a treatment-induction dose of 1200mg, ten-week mortality remained 55% (26/47). This was no better than our previous study (Hazard Ratio [HR] of death on 1200mg vs. 800mg fluconazole: 1.29 (95% CI: 0.77–2.16, p = 0.332)). There was some evidence for improved survival in patients who had repeat lumbar punctures during early therapy to lower intracranial pressure (HR: 0.27 [95% CI: 0.07–1.03, p = 0.055]).

Conclusion

There remains an urgent need to identify more effective, affordable and deliverable regimens for cryptococcal meningitis.  相似文献

Cryptococcus neoformans, a pathogenic yeast, grows at temperatures between 25 and 37°C. However, the closely related non-pathogen C. albidus exhibits restricted growth at temperatures above ambient with little or no growth at 37°C. The inhibition of growth of the non-pathogen, as measured by turbidity, cell number, and per cent budding, is reversible after 48 hr at the non-permissive temperature (37°C). Growth cessation at 37°C is accompanied by a corresponding decrease in DNA synthesis, which is not observed in C. neoformans. RNA and protein synthesis in C. albidus and C. neoformans are only slightly affected at the elevated temperature. Degradation by nucleases does not seem to account for the differences found in this cumulative DNA synthesis in C. albidus at 25 and 37°C. These facts suggest that C. albidus may possess a thermo-sensitive defect in the machinery responsible for the initiation of DNA replication.  相似文献

Cryptococcal meningoencephalitis is the most common fungal disease in the central nervous system. The mechanisms by which Cryptococcus neoformans invades the brain are largely unknown. In this study, we found that C. neoformans-derived microvesicles (CnMVs) can enhance the traversal of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) by C. neoformans in vitro. The immunofluorescence imaging demonstrates that CnMVs can fuse with human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMECs), the constituents of the BBB. This activity is presumably due to the ability of the CnMVs to activate HBMEC membrane rafts and induce cell fusogenic activity. CnMVs also enhanced C. neoformans infection of the brain, found in both infected brains and cerebrospinal fluid. In infected mouse brains, CnMVs are distributed inside and around C. neoformans-induced cystic lesions. GFAP (glial fibrillary acidic protein)-positive astrocytes were found surrounding the cystic lesions, overlapping with the 14-3-3-GFP (14-3-3-green fluorescence protein fusion) signals. Substantial changes could be observed in areas that have a high density of CnMV staining. This is the first demonstration that C. neoformans-derived microvesicles can facilitate cryptococcal traversal across the BBB and accumulate at lesion sites of C. neoformans-infected brains. Results of this study suggested that CnMVs play an important role in the pathogenesis of cryptococcal meningoencephalitis.  相似文献

We present the first clinical report of an infection caused by Candida galli, an anamorphic yeast species in the Yarrowia clade. C. galli has been described in the literature only four times, but never before it has been isolated from clinical samples. The colony morphology on Sabouraud medium and morphotype on CHROMagar Candida medium were similar to C. lipolytica as well as the carbon assimilation profile. The phenotypic differences with C. lipolytica were the non-assimilation of N-acetyl glucosamine, the absence of urease activity, growth in 10 % NaCl with 5 % glucose and in vitamin-free medium. MALDI–TOF MS could not generate reliable identification of the strain. Molecular analysis based on amplification of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA regions confirmed the identity as C. galli. Antifungal susceptibility test clearly demonstrated high MICs to 5-fluorocytosine, amphotericin B and fluconazole, as in the species belonging to the Yarrowia clade.  相似文献

Background

Cryptococcus neoformans is a pathogenic yeast that causes cryptococcosis, a life threatening disease. The prevalence of cryptococcosis in Asia has been rising after the onset of the AIDS epidemic and estimates indicate more than 120 cases per 1,000 HIV-infected individuals per year. Almost all cryptococcal disease cases in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients in Asia are caused by C. neoformans var. grubii. Epidemiological studies on C. neoformans in pan-Asia have not been reported. The present work studies the genetic diversity of the fungus by microsatellite typing and susceptibility analysis of approximately 500 isolates from seven Asian countries.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Genetic diversity of Asian isolates of C. neoformans was determined using microsatellite analysis with nine microsatellite markers. The analysis revealed eight microsatellite complexes (MCs) which showed different distributions among geographically defined populations. A correlation between MCs and HIV-status was observed. Microsatellite complex 2 was mainly associated with isolates from HIV-negative patients, whereas MC8 was associated with those from HIV-positive patients. Most isolates were susceptible to amphotericin B, itraconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole, and isavuconazole, but 17 (3.4%) and 10 (2%) were found to be resistant to 5-flucytosine and fluconazole, respectively. Importantly, five Indonesian isolates (approximately 12.5% from all Indonesian isolates investigated and 1% from the total studied isolates) were resistant to both antifungals. The majority of 5-flucytosine resistant isolates belonged to MC17.

Conclusions

The findings showed a different distribution of genotypes of C. neoformans var. grubii isolates from various countries in Asia, as well as a correlation of the microsatellite genotypes with the original source of the strains and resistance to 5-flucytosine.  相似文献

Although several virulence factors and associated genes have been identified, the mechanisms that allow Cryptococcus neoformans to adapt during chronic infection and to persist in immunocompromised hosts remain poorly understood. Characterization of senescent cells of C. neoformans demonstrated that these cells exhibit a significantly enlarged cell body and capsule but still cross the blood-brain barrier. C. neoformans cells with advanced generational age are also more resistant to phagocytosis and killing by antifungals, which could promote their selection during chronic disease in humans. Senescent cells of RC-2, a C. neoformans strain that undergoes phenotypic switching, manifest switching rates up to 11-fold higher than those of younger cells. Infection experiments with labeled cells suggest that senescent yeast cells can potentially accumulate in vivo. Mathematical modeling incorporating different switching rates demonstrates how increased switching rates promote the emergence of hypervirulent mucoid variants during chronic infection. Our findings introduce the intriguing concept that senescence in eukaryotic pathogens could be a mechanism of microevolution that may promote pathoadaptation and facilitate evasion of an evolving immune response.Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast that causes chronic meningoencephalitis predominantly in patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus infection. Worldwide, this disease is estimated to cause more than 600,000 deaths per year (22). This high death rate may result in part from the fact that this chronic infection is notoriously difficult to eradicate, despite effective antifungal therapy. Even in successfully treated patients with access to antiretroviral therapy, the organism persists and can cause relapse both before and after the start of highly active antiretroviral treatment.In murine infection models, C. neoformans strain RC-2 can augment virulence by undergoing phenotypic switching from a smooth (SM) parent colony to a more virulent mucoid (MC) colony variant (6). Phenotypic switching occurs in both species and varieties of this fungus (6, 8, 11). Although differentially regulated genes associated with switching have been described (10), the precise molecular mechanism that controls phenotypic switching in C. neoformans is unknown. In vitro investigations have demonstrated that phenotypic switching occurs at a stable rate and MC switch variants spontaneously arise at a rate of 1 in about 20,000 plated SM colonies. Environmental signals that induce or alter this process have not been identified to date. Phenotypic switching occurs during chronic murine infection and alters the outcome (6), but it is noteworthy that MC switch variants consistently emerge late in the course of infection (after 6 weeks), although the fungal burden is highest on day 14 after intratracheal (i.t.) infection. This could reflect altering selection pressure by an evolving host response or, alternatively, a change in the microbe''s propensity to undergo phenotypic switching over time. In Candida albicans, the process of phenotypic switching is controlled by pathways that are involved in silencing and maintenance of genomic stability (14, 20, 34, 35). Furthermore, in the context of research on aging in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, it has become evident that senescent yeast cells (old cells with advanced generational age) exhibit less genomic stability (17, 18). C. neoformans is also a unicellular haploid yeast that replicates clonally in vivo. Consequently, we reasoned that it was conceivable that replicative aging of C. neoformans during chronic infection could alter genomic stability and its propensity to undergo phenotypic switching. Through the use of Anderson air samplers, 214 isolates ofCryptococcus neoformans were cultured from the air in a vacant tower in a large complex of buildings in Oklahoma City. The tower contained hundreds of pigeons, a massive amount of droppings, nests with eggs and young, dying and dead pigeons. All isolates were serotype A-D and self-sterile for the production of basidiospores. Among these, 193 were of the ‘alpha’ mating type, producing basidiospores when paired with ‘a’ mating type. No isolates of ‘α’ mating type were found. The remaining 21 isolates were untypable for their mating type. These findings imply that the infectious particles ofC. neoformans in nature are relatively small, nonencapsulated yeast cells andnot basidiospores.  相似文献

Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet drug. It is used for the treatment as well as for the prophylaxis of coronary artery disease. Clopidogrel resistance is an emerging problem in clinical settings. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of CYP3A5*3 genetic polymorphism on clopidogrel resistance. One hundred and forty-seven patients from outpatient Department of Cardiology on 75 mg/day of clopidogrel as maintenance dose were recruited from April 2010 to July 2011. All subjects gave written informed consent to participate in the study. DNA extraction was performed using phenol chloroform extraction procedure and genotyping by standard Taqman based RT-PCR method. Platelet aggregation was done at the end of 7th and 14th day by using chronolog lumi Aggregometer which is expressed as impedance in ohms. Impedance values of >5 ohms at the end of 6 min were considered as clopidogrel resistance. Subjects (N = 147) were analysed for CYP3A5*3 polymorphism, of which 49 (33 %) were found to be clopidogrel resistant. Homomutants of CYP3A5*3 gene had 2.78 (0.97–7.98; p < 0.05) fold risk and heteromutants had 2.4 (0.93–6.46; p < 0.05) fold risk of developing clopidogrel resistance. Carriers of defective allele G of CYP3A5*3 had higher propensity to cause clopidogrel resistance with an odds ratio of 1.63. Variant alleles and genotypes of CYP3A5*3 polymorphism contributed significantly to clopidogrel resistance with a higher odds ratio. Thus, pharmacogenomics paves way for the emergence of stratified medicine in clopidogrel therapy and personalised pharmacotherapy in ischaemic heart disease.  相似文献

Yarrowia lipolytica is an unconventional yeast, and is generally recognized as safe (GRAS). It provides a versatile fermentation platform that is used commercially to produce many added-value products. Here we report a multiple fragment assembly method that allows one-step integration of an entire β-carotene biosynthesis pathway (~11 kb, consisting of four genes) via in vivo homologous recombination into the rDNA locus of the Y. lipolytica chromosome. The highest efficiency was 21 %, and the highest production of β-carotene was 2.2 ± 0.3 mg per g dry cell weight. The total procedure was completed in less than one week, as compared to a previously reported sequential gene integration method that required n weeks for n genes. This time-saving method will facilitate synthetic biology, metabolic engineering and functional genomics studies of Y. lipolytica.  相似文献

Aim

To retrospectively investigate the epidemiology of cryptococcosis in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Methodology

Forty-six sequentially obtained isolates from 19 patients were subjected to amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) genotyping, microsatellite typing, mating- and serotype PCRs and antifungal susceptibility testing.

Results

Majority of the isolates were Cryptococcus deneoformans (n = 29/46; 63%) followed by Cryptococcus neoformans (n = 16/46; 34.8%) and their interspecies hybrid (n = 1/46; 2.2%). Mating-type α was predominant, two mating-type a C. deneoformans isolates and one mating-type a/α isolate were observed. Several mixed infections were found by microsatellite typing; one patient had a persisting C. deneoformans infection for > 2.5 years. For C. deneoformans, the in vitro antifungal MIC90 and susceptibility ranges were for amphotericin B 0.25 µg/ml (0.031–0.25 µg/ml), 5-fluorocytosine 0.25 µg/ml (0.063–4 µg/ml), fluconazole 8 µg/ml (0.5–16 µg/ml), voriconazole 0.063 µg/ml (0.008–0.125 µg/ml), posaconazole 0.063 µg/ml (0.008–0.063 µg/ml) and itraconazole 0.063 µg/ml (0.031–0.125 µg/ml). For C. neoformans, these values were for amphotericin B 0.25 µg/ml (0.063–0.5 µg/ml), 5-fluorocytosine 1 µg/ml (0.063–1 µg/ml), fluconazole 16 µg/ml (0.5–64 µg/ml), voriconazole 0.125 µg/ml (0.008–0.25 µg/ml), posaconazole 0.063 µg/ml (0.008–0.063 µg/ml) and itraconazole 0.063 µg/ml (0.031–0.125 µg/ml).

Conclusions

Majority of the cases were caused by C. deneoformans; mating-type α was predominant. Several mixed infections were identified by AFLP genotyping and microsatellite typing. Despite antifungal therapy, a cryptococcal isolate could persist for years. Voriconazole, itraconazole and posaconazole were the most potent antifungal drugs.

Imbalance on endothelial turnover can predict cardiovascular outcomes. We aimed at evaluating the effects of lipid-modifying therapies on circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), endothelial microparticles (EMPs), and platelet microparticles (PMPs) in high cardiovascular risk subjects with elevated C-reactive protein (CRP). Sixty-three individuals with coronary heart disease (CHD) or CHD risk equivalent on stable statin therapy, with LDL-cholesterol <100 mg/dL and CRP ≥2.0 mg/L were selected. After a 4-week run-in period with atorvastatin 10 mg, those with persistent CRP ≥2.0 mg/L were randomized to another 4-week treatment period with atorvastatin 40 mg, ezetimibe 10 mg or atorvastatin 40 mg/ezetimibe 10 mg. EPC (CD34+/CD133+/KDR+), EMP (CD51+), and PMP (CD42+/CD31+) were quantified by flow cytometry. Atorvastatin 40 mg and atorvastatin 40 mg/ezetimibe 10 mg reduced LDL-cholesterol (P < 0.001, paired T test, vs. baseline). Combined therapy, but not ezetimibe reduced CRP. CD34+/KDR+ EPC were reduced after ezetimibe alone (P = 0.011 vs. baseline, Wilcoxon test) or combined with atorvastatin (P = 0.016 vs. baseline, Wilcoxon test). In addition, ezetimibe increased CD51+ EMP (P = 0.017 vs. baseline, Wilcoxon test). No correlations between these markers and LDL-cholesterol or CRP were observed. These results contribute to understand the link between inflammation and vascular homeostasis and highlight the broader benefit of statins decreasing inflammation and preventing microparticles release, an effect not observed with ezetimibe alone.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal parasites cause substantial economic losses in pasture-based sheep production systems. Supranutritional organic selenium (Se) supplementation may be beneficial because it improves immune responses to pathogens. To evaluate the effect of Se-yeast supplementation on gastrointestinal parasite load, 30 ewes per treatment group were drenched weekly with no Se, 4.9 mg Se/week as Se yeast (maximum FDA-allowed concentration), or supranutritional concentrations of Se yeast (14.7 and 24.5 mg Se/week) starting early fall for 85 weeks. Fecal samples were collected at weeks 63, 66, 78, and 84 and counted for total trichostrongyle-type eggs and Haemonchus contortus eggs (in samples with ≥200 trichostrongyle eggs/g feces). During breeding season (fall), ewes were kept on pasture; ewes receiving 24.5 mg Se/week had lower fecal trichostrongyle egg counts (93?±?40 eggs/g feces) compared with ewes receiving no Se (537?±?257 eggs/g feces; P?=?0.007) or ewes receiving 4.9 mg Se/week as Se yeast (398?±?208 eggs/g feces; P?=?0.03). In winter, fecal trichostrongyle egg counts decreased, and group differences were not apparent. During lambing season (spring), ewes were kept in the barn and fecal trichostrongyle egg counts increased, although no group differences were observed. However, none of the ewes receiving supranutritional Se yeast, and with trichostrongyle egg counts ≥200 eggs/g of feces, but four of the ewes receiving lower Se dosages had H. contortus egg counts ≥1,000 eggs/g feces (P?=?0.04). Our results suggest that supranutritional Se-yeast supplementation may enhance resistance to naturally occurring H. contortus gastrointestinal parasitism in sheep.  相似文献
