Floral nectar sugar composition, nectary anatomy, and visitors are studied in five Argentine Orchidaceae, from 18 populations. Hand-pollinations were performed to evaluate their breeding system. We found two different types of perigonal nectaries located either in the spur (Habenaria gouriieana, H. hieronymi, Habenariinae), or in the basal lateral parts of the labellum (Beadlea dutraei, Pelexia bonariensis, Stenorrhynchos orchioides, Spiranthinae). The spur ofHabenaria is a nonvascularised and nonstructural nectary. The inner epidermis bears one-celled long papillae. In bud stage, the papillae are filled with starch grains, but when the flower opens and nectar secretion starts, they show no starch grains. This fact may indicate that starch is a source for some of the secreted nectar. In the remainder genera, the lateral basal parts of the labellum are secretory. The two glands are located in the adaxial basal lateral faces of the labellum. These nectaries are structural and nonvascularised.Stenorrhynchos produces abundant, concentrated nectar (40–50%).Habenaria gourlieana accumulates copious nectar in a lower concentration (<20%), whereas the other species produce small quantities of concentrated nectar (ca. 50%). Three of the studied species have sucrose predominant nectar (Beadlea dutrael, Habenaria gourlieana, andPelexia bonariensis) whileH. hieronymi, Stenorrhynchos orchioides have hexose predominant ones. Nectar removal and/or pollination induce flower senescence.H. gouriieana is visited by sphingids,S. orchioides by hummingbirds, andB. dutrael by bees. For the two other species we did not record flower visitors.Pelexia bonariensis, B. dutrael, andS. orchiodes are self-compatible species but a pollinator is needed. 相似文献

We examined the contribution of diurnal and nocturnal pollination to male and female reproductive success in Lilium auratum. Plants were bagged for either 12 h during the day or at night to allow either only nocturnal or only diurnal visitors to forage throughout the flowering period. We found that there was no significant difference in the seed:ovule ratio among diurnally pollinated, nocturnally pollinated, or control flowers. However, in terms of male reproductive success, it was more advantageous for the plants to be pollinated both diurnally and nocturnally: the numbers of pollen grains remaining in diurnally pollinated or nocturnally pollinated flowers were significantly greater than those in control flowers. The total amount of floral volatiles of L. auratum was significantly higher at night than during the day. The constituents of floral scent of all time series examined were mostly monoterpenoids, many of which serve as attractants for nocturnal hawkmoths. Such nocturnally biased floral scent emission of L. auratum might achieve male reproductive success by attracting nocturnal visitors, which may suggest that the relative contribution of floral scent in this species is biased towards male reproductive success. 相似文献

Nectar is used as raw material for the production of honey and as significant reward in the relationship between bees and plants during pollination. Therefore, it is important to investigate its abundance, dynamics and associated governing factors. Weather conditions are known to influence nectar production, and predicted climate changes may be responsible for future declining in total yield from beekeeping activities. We investigated nectar production as total soluble solids (TSS) of well-known species for honey production, Ziziphus nummularia in a hot-arid environment of Saudi Arabia. Data on nectar samples from bagged flowers of different stages during two blooming seasons, 2013 and 2015 were collected on weekly bases, and the data were correlated with weather conditions (temperature, relative humidity, and wind). A significant difference in TSS amount has been obtained, with 1-day old flowers displaying the higher content. TSS production was varied along the different day intervals, for both years, with a peak of production in the afternoon. In our results, nectar production was not correlated to temperature and wind, but was significantly negatively correlated with relative humidity. According to the current and future weather forecasting conditions, understanding of the relationship between weather conditions and nectar availability turned out to be important predictive information that may be interpreted into an economic projection of incomes from beekeeping activities. 相似文献

Summary Three Japanese species of Impatiens, which secrete nectar continuously in long spurs, were visited by Bombus diversus workers consecutively throughout the day. B. diversus workers showed characteristic patterns of behavior in flower use, flower choice, and patch departure. (1) Bumblebees stayed longer on a flower which had been unvisited for a while than on a flower which had been visited recently. (2) Bumblebees preferred visiting flowers which had been unvisited for a while to visiting those which had been visited recently, and to visiting those which had been unvisited for a long period. (3) Bumblebees had a higher probability of leaving a patch after they had stayed on a flower for a short period than after they had stayed for a longer period. The bumblebees appeared to perceive both remotely and proximately chemical cues deposited by other foraging individuals, which indicated nectar rewards in a flower, and thus obtained a higher nectar intake than the mean amount of nectar left in a flower. 相似文献

Endotherms must warm ingested food to body temperature. Food warming costs may be especially high for nectar-feeding birds, which can ingest prodigious volumes. We formulated a mathematical model to predict the cost of warming nectar as a function of nectar temperature and sugar concentration. This model predicts that the cost of warming nectar should: (1) decrease as a power function of nectar concentration, and (2) increase linearly with the difference between body temperature and nectar temperature. We tested our model on rufous hummingbirds (Selasphorus rufus). A typical experiment consisted of feeding birds nectar of a given concentration at 39°C (equivalent to body temperature) and then at 4°C, and vice versa. We used the percentage change in metabolic rate between the two food temperatures to estimate the cost of warming nectar. The model's predictions were accurately met. When birds had to hover rather than perch during feeding bouts, estimated food-warming costs were only slightly lower. The cost of warming nectar to body temperature appears to be an important yet overlooked aspect of the energy budgets of nectar-feeding birds. Hummingbirds feeding on 5% sucrose solutions at 4oC have to increase their metabolic rate by an amount equivalent to that elicited by a 15°C drop in ambient temperature.Abbreviations AE assimilation efficiency - C nectar concentration - H' cost of warming food to body temperature - SDA specific dynamic action - Ta ambient temperature - Tb body temperature - Tn nectar temperatureCommunicated by: G. Neotropical nectar-feeding bats (Glossophaginae) are highly specialized in the exploitation of floral nectar and have one
of the highest mass-specific metabolic rates among mammals. Nevertheless, they are distributed throughout the tropics and
subtropics over a wide elevational range, and thus encounter many extreme and energetically challenging environmental conditions.
Depressing their otherwise high metabolic rate, e.g., in situations of food restriction, might be an important adaptive physiological
strategy in these dietary specialists. We investigated the thermoregulatory behavior of captive 10-g nectar feeding bats (Glossophaga soricina; Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) under variable ambient temperatures (T
a) and feeding regimes and predicted that bats would use torpor as an energy-conserving behavior under energetic constraints.
All tested animals entered torpor in response to energetic restrictions and the depth of torpor was dependent on the body
condition of the animals and hence on their degree of physiological constraints. Periods of torpor with body temperatures
(T
b) below 34°C were precisely adjusted to the photoperiod. The median length of diurnal torpor was 11.43 h. The lowest T
b measured was 21°C at a T
a of 19°C. Estimated energy savings due to torpor were considerable, with reductions in metabolic rate to as low as 5% of the
metabolic rate of normothermic bats at the same T
a. However, contrary to temperate zone bats that also employ diurnal torpor, G. soricina regulated their T
b to the highest possible levels given the present energetic supplies. To summarize, G. soricina is a precise thermoregulator, which strategically employs thermoregulatory behavior in order to decrease its energy expenditure
when under energetic restrictions. This adaptation may play a crucial role in the distribution and the assembly of communities
of nectar-feeding bats and may point to a general capacity for torpor in tropical bats. 相似文献

The foraging behavior of three stingless bees, Trigona (Tetragonula) minangkabau, T. (Trigonella) moorei and T. (Heterotrigona) itama, was studied to describe patterns of resource harvest in disturbed forest areas in Sumatra, Indonesia.
- Average daily total number of foraging flights per colony was 1200 in T. minangkabau, 2400 in T. moorei and 7000 in T. itama and it was proportional to colony population size. Foragers collecting nectar, pollen or plant resin were respectively 70–80%, 10–20% and <10% in the three species. Pollen was collected most in the morning. Nectar collection peaked in midday in T. itama but continued almost evenly until dusk in T. minangkabau and T. moorei. Resin was collected evenly throughout day.
- In all the three species the volume of a nectar load carried by a returning forager did not decrease until 1600, followed by slight decline. In the morning the sugar concentration of nectar was almost constantly 30%, and in the afternoon its maximum value reached 60% although some remained 30%. As a result, the mean sugar weight in a nectar load gradually increased until dusk.
- In T. minangkabau, resin was collected by specialized foragers. Nectar foragers switched to collect pollen and vice versa. There were two types of foraging: “exploitatory” flights, the repitition of short, rather constant flights bringing back full resource loads, and “exploratory” flights, prolonged flight and/or reduction in amount of resources carried. Exploitatory flights followed the exploratory flights which led to discovery of rich sources. Mean duration of exploitatory flights was 7 min during nectar collection, 12 min for pollen and 23 min for resin. Sites of exploited flowers were estimated to be 84–434 m distant from the nest site. Mean duration of flights for nectar collection was 13 min in the morning and 6 min in the late afternoon.

The two related Petunia species, P. axillaris and P. integrifolia, are sympatric at various locations in South America but do not hybridise. Divergent pollinator preferences are believed to be in part responsible for their reproductive isolation. The volume of nectar produced and several components of flower morphology might contribute to pollinator-dependant reproductive isolation. In this study, we aimed to identify the genetic changes underlying the quantitative differences observed between these two Petunia species in flower size and nectar volume. We mapped quantitative trait loci (QTL) responsible for the different phenotypes of P. axillaris and P. integrifolia in an inter-specific backcross population. QTL of small to moderate effect control the differences in flower size and volume of nectar. In addition, we observed strong suppression of meiotic recombination in Petunia, even between closely related species, which precluded a fine resolution of QTL mapping. Thus, our data suggest that flower size and nectar volume are highly polygenic. They are likely to have evolved gradually through pollinator-mediated adaptation or reinforcement, and are not likely to have been primary factors in early steps of pollinator isolation of P. axillaris and P. integrifolia. 相似文献

Rhythms of fragrance emission in flowers 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
A method for the sampling of volatiles emitted by individual flowers is described. Sampling over periods of 3 h allowed the examination of diurnal changes in quantity and quality of fragrance. In the species studied, Odontoglossum constrictum Lindl., Citrus medica L., Hoya carnosa R. Br., and Stephanotis floribunda Brongs., the fragrance was characterized by a few major components accompanied by a larger number of minor components. Flowers of all species produced volatiles in a rhythmical, diurnal fashion. Whereas in detached flowers of O. constrictum and C. medica rhythmicity could be observed for up to four cycles, flowers of H. carnosa showed this phenomenon only when attached to the plant. Maxima of emission were observed during the day in C. medica and O. constrictum whereas in H. carnosa it occurred during the night. In S. floribunda a conspicuous asynchronism of the emission of different volatiles was observed, resulting in the rhythmical change of fragrance quality. 相似文献

Microorganisms colonize the nectar of many angiosperms. Variable diversity and spatio-temporal dynamics of nectar-inhabiting microorganisms (e.g., yeasts) may drive variation in nectar sugar composition and subsequent plant–pollinator interactions. We assessed yeast frequency of occurrence and density in the nectar of the perennial herb, Delphinium nuttallianum, across multiple spatio-temporal scales, including flower lifetime and sex-phase transition, flowering season, populations, and years. We tested the hypothesis that pollinators vector yeasts by comparing densities between virgin flowers and those open to visitation. Finally, we identified yeasts using molecular methods and tested for an association between yeast density and nectar composition using ultra-performance liquid chromatography. Yeasts were frequent colonists of Delphinium nectar, occurring in all populations and years sampled. Yeast frequency of occurrence and density varied across most spatio-temporal scales examined. Pollinators were vectors of yeast: virgin flowers remained yeast-free, while those open to visitation became inoculated. Nectar samples were species-poor, with a majority colonized by Metschnikowia reukaufii. Finally, increasing yeast density was correlated with a decrease in sucrose and an increase in monosaccharides. Our results document that yeasts form species-poor communities in populations of this hermaphroditic perennial, in addition to highlighting their spatio-temporal dynamics and effects on nectar quality. Spatio-temporal variation in frequency of occurrence, density, and changes in nectar may have important implications for the nature and strength of interactions between Delphinium and its pollinators. 相似文献

Flower herbivory and pollination have been described as interactive processes that influence each other in their effects on
plant reproductive success. Few studies, however, have so far examined their joint effects in natural populations. In this
paper we evaluate the influence of flower damage and pollination by the hummingbird Oreotrochilus leucopleurus on the fecundity of the Andean monkey flower Mimulus luteus. We performed a 2×2 factorial experiment, with artificial clipping of lower petals and selective exclusion of the hummingbird
as main factors. In spite of the relatively low proportion (27.5%) of the variance in seed production accounted for by the
full factorial model, artificial damage and hummingbird exclusion, as well as their interaction, were highly significant,
indicating nonadditive effects of factors on plant fecundity. In the presence of hummingbirds, undamaged flowers had a seed
production that was 1.7-fold higher than for damaged flowers, suggesting that the effect of flower damage on female reproductive
success occurs probably as a consequence of hummingbird discrimination against damaged corollas. This result indicates that
the impact of flower herbivory on plant fecundity was contingent on the presence or absence of hummingbirds, suggesting that
pollinators may indirectly select for undamaged and probably resistant flower phenotypes. A second interaction effect revealed
that undamaged flowers produced 78.5% more seeds in the absence of rather than in the presence of O. leucopleurus, raising the question of the ecological mechanism involved. We suggest that the strong territorial behavior exhibited by
the bee Centris nigerrima may confine the foraging activities of the remaining bee species to safe sites within exclosures. Overall, our results provide
evidence that hummingbird pollination and flower herbivory have interdependent effects on M. luteus fecundity, which indicates that it will be difficult to predict their ecological and evolutionary consequences unless interactions
are analyzed in an integrated form. 相似文献

Floral nectar chemical compositions of 28 species native to Argentinian Patagonia are reported. Most data obtained are new reports at the generic and/or the specific level. Nectars of these species show high mean concentrations (42.35±15.56; %, wt/total wt of solution). Most of the species are hexose dominant (68%) and the remaining are sucrose rich (11%) or sucrose dominant (21%). The hexose ratio shows that in most species (71%) glucose predominates over fructose. The nectars of all species have amino acids. In 32% of them, lipids were detected, whereas phenols were present in around 60%. Most of the species are entomophilous, mainly melittophilous and psychophilous. These data together with those of our previous report include a total of 57 species from 19 families, and suggest three trends in the nectar sugar traits of Patagonian plants, regardless of their systematic relationship or floral syndrome: high concentration, hexose dominance, and predominance of glucose. These results suggest that nectar characteristics are not always as similar for plants pollinated by the same animal taxa as formerly thought. 相似文献

In a natural population of Solidago altissima L., the changes in the spatial pattern of shoots in the course of growth were studied. The results obtained were summarized as follows:
- The spatial pattern changed from clumped to random distribution as plants grew. The change seemed to be resulted from some density-dependent process acting at a small spatial scale, probably the competition for space.
- Large plants tended to distribute themselves more uniformly over the space than the small ones but at the mature stage of growth such a difference was not obviously recognized. The process of appearance of the small-sized plants during successive periods also seemed to be dependent on local density.
- Large plants at the early stage of growth tended to survive better, and there was a positive correlation between initial size and the size at maturity.
- From these results, it is inferred that the change of spatial pattern from clumped to random distribution is largely due to the elimination of small shoots as the result of competition for space among individual shoots.

The variation of floral morphology and its effect on the flower visitors of Polygala vayredae Costa (Polygalaceae), a narrow endemic species from the Oriental pre-Pyrenees, were examined. First, to account for the main floral reward (i.e., nectar), the relationship between the dimensions of the nectar gland and nectar production was investigated. Second, floral traits variation was assessed within and between the three most representative populations of the species. Finally, the role of several floral traits in the female fitness was evaluated. Furthermore, as nectar robbing was highly frequent, preferences of robbers for specific floral traits and their impact on legitimate pollinations were also evaluated. The flowers of this species are characterized by significant variations in floral characteristics and nectar rewards. A significant and positive correlation between the nectar gland dimensions and nectar production per flower was observed, with the gland dimensions being a good measure to infer the rewards offered by the flowers of P. vayredae. In general, corolla traits were significant and positively correlated with each other. Nectar was revealed to be an important trait in flower–visitor interactions, with legitimate pollinations being primarily influenced by this floral reward. Negative correlations between robbing frequency and legitimate pollinations were observed in two of the studied populations, and positive correlations between flower size and robbing frequency were observed in one population. An indirect negative selection over phenotypic floral traits mediated by nectar robbers is proposed. 相似文献

Observations regarding floral fragrance and the rhythmicity of its emission in four plant species are reported. In the case of flowers of Hoya carnosa R. Br. which are characterized by circadian rhythmicity of scentedness (R. Altenburger and P. Matile, 1988, Planta 174, 248–252), temperature compensation of the free-running period as well as persistence of oscillations in permanent darkness have been demonstrated. A hitherto unidentified component of fragrance turned out to be identical to an unusual sesquiterpene recently discovered in cardamom oil (B. Maurer et al., 1986, Tetrahedron Lett. 27, 2111–2112). In Stephanotis floribunda Brongs. the rhythmic emission of fragrance is circadian in nature, but in a constant environment the oscillations of individual components are increasingly asynchronous. In excised flowers of Odontoglossum constrictum Lindl. the diurnal oscillations observed in a natural photoperiod are abolished under constant environmental conditions. They are resumed upon the return to a 1212-h photoperiod. The absence of circadian control could also be demonstrated in excised flowers of Citrus medica L. In this species, too, the daily maxima of scent emission reappear upon the transfer of flowers to a 1212-h light/ dark cycle. Results obtained upon the comparative analysis of volatiles in the headspace above the flowers and in petal extract indicate that the relative abundance of an individual compound in the floral fragrance is not a function of differential volatility.Abbreviations DL

The diversity of angiosperm flowers is astounding. The conventional explanation for this diversity is that it represents the great variety of ways in which flowers have adapted to attract an even greater diversity of animal pollinators. Many animal behaviourists are therefore interested in how changes in floral morphology affect pollinator behaviour. The establishment of well-characterised model plant species has greatly furthered our understanding of how floral morphology is generated and varied. Many of these model species are pollinated by animals and attract their pollinators through the production of colour, shape, scent, size and rewards. An understanding of the developmental plasticity of floral morphology, and the constraints upon it, should inform research into animal responses to flowers. The use of genetically characterised model species, and the isogenic and near-isogenic lines available in them, will allow dissection of the different components of floral attraction and reward in natural systems. Nectar secretion dynamics and honey production potentials of some major honey plants in Saudi Arabia
《Saudi Journal of Biological Sciences》2017,24(1):180-191
The contribution of a bee plant species to honey production depends on the plant’s nectar secretion quality and quantity, which is mainly governed by biotic and abiotic factors. The aim of the current study, was to investigate the nectar secretion dynamics and honey production potential of 14 major bee plant species of the target area. We examined the quantity and dynamics of nectar sugar per flower five times a day using a nectar sugar washing technique and direct measuring of nectar with calibrated capillary tubes. The average nectar sugar amount of the species varied from 0.41 mg/flower to 7.7 mg/flower (P < 0.0001). The honey sugar per flower was used to extrapolate the honey production potential per plant and per hectare of land. Accordingly the honey production potential of the species observed to vary from 14 kg/hectare in Otostegia fruticosa to 829 kg/hectare in Ziziphus spina-christi. The nectar secretion dynamics of the species generally showed an increasing trend early in the morning, peaking toward midday, followed by a decline but different species observed to have different peak nectar secretion times. Generally, the tree species secreted more nectar sugar/flower than the herbs. The nectar secretion amount of the species was positively correlated with the ambient temperature, indicating the adaptation of the species to hot climatic conditions. However, different species were observed to have a different optimum temperature for peak nectar secretion. Despite the limited rainfall and high temperature of the area, many plants were found to have good potential for honey production. The monetary value of honey per hectare of the studied honeybee plant species can be of equal or greater than the per-hectare monetary value of some cultivated crops that require numerous inputs. In addition, the information generated is believed to be useful in apiary site selection and to estimate the honey bee colony carrying capacity of an area. 相似文献
