Dragma Hippomanicum III: Novitates Californicae

Two new taxa are described from California:Astragalus (sect.Flexuosi)shevockii from the Sierra Nevada in Tulare County representing a new subsect.Shevockiani; andA. lentiginosus var.piscinensis from an alkaline spring in Mono County. Rediscovery in Nevada of long-lostA. lentiginosus var.sesquimetralis and a new station for the same in Inyo County, California are reported.     

Three new Brazilian species of chamaecrista moench (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae)

Chamaecrista (sect.Apoucouita) aspidiifolia Irwin & Barneby from Bahia,Ch. (sect.Absus) glischrodes Irwin & Barneby from Minas Gerais andCh. (sect.Absus)didyma Irwin & Barneby from Brazilian Amazonia are described, figured, and discussed in terms of affinity. Several incidental new combinations inChamaecrista are proposed.     

Toward a census of genus Mimosa (Mimosaceae) in the Americas: a new species from Mexico (Baja California Sur) and two from planaltine Brazil (Goiás, Minas Gerais)

Three new species of Mimosa are described: M. (sect. Batocaulon) epitropica Barneby & León de la Luz from Mexico (Baja California Sur); and two from planaltine Brazil, M. (sect. Habbasia) bispiculata Barneby and M. (sect. Mimosa) demissa Barneby. The affinity of each is discussed, and all are illustrated.     

Two new mimosaceous trees from the American Tropics

Piptadenia (sect.Pityrocarpa)leucoxylon is described from the lower Orinoco basin in Venezuela, andPithecellobium (sect.Samanea)foederale from Distrito Federal, Brazil. Figures, diagnoses, and discussion of kinship are presented for each.     

Five new species of Heteropterys (Malpighiaceae) from Central and South America

Five-new taxa ofHeteropterys H. B. K. subsect.Aptychia Nied. are described, illustrated, and mapped:H. andina from Peru;H. minutiflora from Costa Rica; andH. bullata, H. capixaba, andH. oberdanii, from the Atlantic coastal forest of Brazil. The affinities and diagnostic characters of each species are discussed.     

Novae Gesneriaceae neotropicarum VI: five new Gesneriaceae from northwestern South America

Columnea chrysotricha, C. cuspidata (bothColumnea sect.Collandra), andGasteranthus recurvatus are described from Colombia;C. sulcata (Columnea sect.Collandra) from Ecuador and Colombia; andDrymonia anisophylla from the Amazonian lowland rain forests of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.     

A new species of Siphocampylus (Campanulaceae: Lobelioideae) from northern Peru

Siphocampylus platysiphon (Campanulaceae: Lobelioideae) is described as a new species from northern Peru. It is a member of subsect.Megastomi in sect.Brachysiphon and is most closely related toS. giganteus, a species common to the north in Ecuador and Colombia.     

Two new Brazilian species of Chamaecrista Moench (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae)

Chamaecrista (sect.Apoucouita) onusta Irwin & Barneby from coastal Bahia andCh. (sect.Absus) hatschbachii Irwin & Barneby from north-central Minas Gerais are described, figured and systematically characterized. Four new combinations inChamaecrista incidental to the discussion are proposed.     

A revision of the genus Oxytheca Nutt. (Polygonaceae)

The genusOxytheca of western North America and temperate South America consists of seven species which are keyed, described, discussed, illustrated, and mapped. They are divided among sect.Oxytheca, sect.Acanthoscyphus stat. & comb. nov., and sect.Neoxytheca sect. nov.Oxytheca dendroidea subsp.chilensis is given as a new combination, whileO. parishii var.cienegensis andO. parishii var.goodmaniana are described as new. The history and relationships of the genus are discussed. It is retained as distinct fromEriogonum and is thought to have arisen from the larger genus nearE. spergulinum, E. parishii, andE. apiculatum in subgenusGanysma. Cytological data indicatedn= 20.     

Revision of the <Emphasis Type="Italic">Serrulati</Emphasis> species of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Penstemon</Emphasis> section <Emphasis Type="Italic">Saccanthera</Emphasis> subsection <Emphasis Type="Italic">Serrulati</Emphasis>

A revision of Penstemon sect. Saccanthera subsect. Serrulati includes a new species (P. salmonensis), a new variety (P. triphyllus var. infernalis), and the elevation of a subspecies to species (P. curtiflorus), bringing the total number of species to eight, which are keyed and described, complete with nomenclature and type citations.     

Three new species of penstemon (Scrophulariaceae) from the Intermountain Region

Penstemon goodrichii of sect.Cristati andP. navajoa andP. moriahensis of sect.Glabri are described, illustrated and mapped. Their relationships to kindred species are discussed.     

New taxa and combinations in Siphonoglossa (Acanthaceae)

As presently known, the genusSiphonoglossa can be divided into two “subgenera,” one of which is here divided into two sections,Pentaloba andSiphonoglossa. Two new species are described from a locality in Durango, Mexico :S. durangensis in sect.Siphonoglossa andS. linearifolia in sect.Pentaloba. Three other species are transferred intoSiphonoglossa:S. canbyi from northeastern Mexico;S. buchii from Haiti and the Dominican Republic andS. incerta from southern Baja California, Mexico.     

New and noteworthy species in the Paullinieae tribe (Sapindaceae)

The new species Serjania matogrossensis from Mato Grosso, Brazil, belonging to Serjania sect. Platycoccus, is described and illustrated. Serjania decemstriata is reinstated in Serjania sect. Platycoccus, and S. grammatophora (previously of doubtful origin) is identified as being of Brazilian origin. Fruits and tendrils of Lophostigma plumosum are described for the first time.     

Two new species of Dioscorea (Dioscoreaceae) from Peru

Two new species ofDioscorea,D. gentryi (subgen.Helmia sect.Monadelpha) andD. andromedusae (subgen.Helmia sect.Centrostemon) from Peru, are described and illustrated.     

Begonia lyman-smithii (Begoniaceae), a new species from Oaxaca,Mexico

Begonia (sect.Gireoudia)lyman-smithii is described and illustrated, and its relationships are discussed.     

New species of Cuphea section Melvilla (Lythraceae) and an annotated key to the section

Three novelties inCuphea sectionMelvilla subsect.Pachycalyx are described from Brazil;C. andersonii andC. cylindracea from Pará, andC. sabulosa from Amazonas. An annotated key to the 47 species ofCuphea sectionMelvilla is provided, the first since the 1903 monograph of the family, which then included 27 species in the section. The key identifies those species ofCuphea with thick, dorsally convex, red- or yellow-tubed flowers distributed from Mexico to Argentina.
