An account is given of the occurrence of Pandinus imperator imperator (C. L. Koch) and Buthus hottentotta hottentotta Fabricius which are two common species of scorpions in Nigeria. P. imperator is essentially a forest species commonly found in the lowland rain forest zone, while B. hottentotta typically lives in the savannah and has a much wider distribution stretching from the derived savannah to the Sudan zone. During aktograph experiments, P. imperator showed greater locomotory activity during the daytime than at night. In contrast, B. hottentotta was markedly nocturnal. The normal rhythm of locomotory activity of B. hottentotta was greatly affected by constant artificial illumination (20 foot candles) and constant darkness. The rate of water-loss of P. imperator in dry air was greater than that of B. hottentotta. The experimental results are discussed in relation to the behaviour of the scorpions in their natural habitats.  相似文献

Current literature concerning the taxonomic names of two possibly distinct species of scorpions from the genus Centruroides (sculpturatus and/or exilicauda) is controversial. This communication reports the results of biochemical, genetic and electrophysiological experiments conducted with C. exilicauda Wood of Baja California (Mexico) and C. sculpturatus Ewing of Arizona (USA). The chromatographic profile fractionation of the soluble venom from both species of scorpions is different. The N-terminal amino acid sequence for nine toxins of C. exilicauda was determined and compared with those from C. sculpturatus. Lethality tests conducted in mice support the idea that C. exilicauda venom should be expected to be medically less important than C. sculpturatus. Thirteen genes from the venomous glands of the scorpion C. exilicauda were obtained and compared with previously published sequences from genes of the species C. sculpturatus. Genes coding for cytochrome oxidase I and II of both species were also sequenced. A phylogenetic tree was generated with this information showing important differences between them. Additionally, the results of electrophysiological assays conducted with the venom from both species on the Ca(2+)-dependent K(+)-channels, showed significant differences. These results strongly support the conclusion that C. exilicauda and C. sculpturatus are in fact two distinct species of scorpions.  相似文献

With the increasing devastation of the tropical rain forest, there is a critical need to understand how animal forest communities are structured and how habitat degradation will affect these communities. We conducted a field survey to investigate the microhabitat preferences of two co-occurring species of scorpions (Tityus pusillus and Ananteris mauryi) in a fragment of Atlantic rainforest, as well as their abundance and their ecological niche, during both the dry and rainy seasons. Behavioural aspects related to the use of the environment and the proportions of juveniles and adults are also described. The occurrence of intra- and interspecific coexistence was assessed by active search. In addition, pitfall catches were used to assess the structure of the population in the dry and rainy seasons. The differential patterns of spatial distribution in the litter layers provided evidence of partial niche partitioning between the two coexisting scorpion species depending on age and climatic conditions. Abundance, foraging behaviour and age structure (juveniles and adults) were seasonally influenced. We conclude that the diverse and subtle behaviours involved in interaction and habitat use may facilitate species coexistence. Resource partitioning and refuge sharing on a temporal and/or spatial scale, as well as predation pressure, may drive the dynamics and spatial distribution of scorpion species in the rain forest environment.  相似文献

Hybridization in ants can have consequences different from those observed in most other species, with many of the potential deleterious effects being mitigated due to haplodiploidy and eusociality. In some species where colonies are either headed by multiple queens or single queens that mate with many males, hybridization is associated with genetic caste determination, where hybrids develop into workers and purebred individuals develop into queens. A previous study suggested that hybridization occurs between two Dorylus army ant species with multiply mated queens. However, the extent and exact pattern of hybridization have remained unclear, and its possible effect on caste determination has not been investigated. In this study, we aimed to determine the extent and direction of hybridization by measuring how frequently hybrids occur in colonies of both species, and to investigate the possibility of genetic caste determination. We show that hybridization is bidirectional and occurs at equal rates in both species. Hybrid workers make up only 1–2% of the population, and successful interspecific matings represent approximately 2% of all matings in both species. This shows that, although interspecific matings that give rise to worker offspring occur regularly, they are much rarer than intraspecific mating. Finally, we find no evidence of an association between hybridization and genetic caste determination in this population. This means that genetic caste determination is not a necessary outcome of hybridization in ants, even in species where queens mate with multiple males.  相似文献

Abstract On the High Plains of the USA, herbicides specific for broad-leaf weeds are regularly applied to winter wheat in the early spring, sometimes late enough to coincide with the colonization of fields by cereal aphids and their natural enemies. We tested the toxicity of three such herbicides, Ally (Dupont), Rave (Syngenta) and 2,4-D ester (generic), to neonate larvae of two coccinellid species important in cereal aphid biocontrol, Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer and Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville. Topical treatment of larvae with 2,4-D resulted in 25% and 60% mortality in the two species, respectively, with surviving C. maculata larvae experiencing a 5% increase in developmental time. No significant effects were noted for the other two materials, save for a 2.5% increase in developmental time for C. maculata larvae exposed to Rave. No material caused significant mortality in either species when larvae were fed on prey (Schizaphis graminum Rondani) treated with herbicide 24 h earlier, although 2,4-D reduced developmental time slightly in C. maculata. When herbicide applications are delayed enough in spring to coincide with aphid activity in wheat, farmers can reduce the risk of disrupting biological control by selecting an alternative to 2,4-D.  相似文献

Two novel pore-forming peptides have been isolated from the venom of the South-African scorpion Opistophtalmus carinatus. These peptides, designated opistoporin 1 and 2, differ by only one amino acid and belong to a group of alpha-helical, cationic peptides. For the first time, a comparison of the primary structures of alpha-helical pore-forming peptides from scorpion venom was undertaken. This analysis revealed that peptides in the range of 40-50 amino acids contain a typical scorpion conserved sequence S(x)3KxWxS(x)5L. An extensive study of biological activity of synthesized opistoporin 1 and parabutoporin, a pore-forming peptide previously isolated from the venom of the South-African scorpion Parabuthus schlechteri, was undertaken to investigate an eventual cell-selective effect of the peptides. Opistoporin 1 and parabutoporin were most active in inhibiting growth of Gram-negative bacteria (1.3-25 micro m), while melittin and mastoparan, two well-known cytolytic peptides, were more effective against Gram-positive bacteria in the same concentration range. In addition, the peptides showed synergistic activity with some antibiotics commonly used in therapy. Opistoporin 1 and parabutoporin had hemolytic activity intermediate between the least potent mastoparan and the highly lytic melittin. Furthermore, all peptides inhibited growth of fungi. Experiments with SYTOX green suggested that this effect is related to membrane permeabilization.  相似文献

Three endemic Centaurea species from North Africa are investigated for the first time by chromomycin fluorochrome banding for GC-rich DNA distribution, fluorescence in situ hybridization for physical mapping of rRNA genes, and flow cytometry for genome-size assessment. Investigated species belong to three different sections and possess three basic chromosome numbers: C. tougourensis subsp. tougourensis 2n = 4x = 36 (x = 9), C. musimonum 2n = 2x = 20 (x = 10), and C. maroccana 2n = 2x = 24 (x = 12). The number and distribution of chromomycin positive bands (CMA+) and 18S-5.8S-26S (35S) rDNA loci were different among investigated species and ranged from 6 to 80 chromomycin bands and from 2 to 6 35S rDNA loci. The three species have just one 5S rDNA locus at intercalary position on a separate chromosome pairs, except in the case of C. musimonum in which both rDNA loci were localized on the same chromosome. All rDNA loci were co-localized with CMA+ bands, except three 35S in C. musimonum. Genome size ranged from 2C = 1.66 to 2C = 2.86 pg in diploid species (C. musimonum and C. maroccana, respectively) and to 2C = 4.51 pg in tetraploid C. tougourensis subsp. tougourensis.  相似文献

Seed morphology data are shown to support data from general morphology and palynology; they can be used for taxonomy at the sectional and specific levels. At times clear differences are apparent at the infraspecific level. Seed sculpturing was found to be of great value for separating taxa at all levels of the hierarchy.  相似文献
