In order to show the function of agricultural protection of biodiversity at the level of homegarden, comparative analysis was operated between 20 farmer households through random sampling and farmers recommended in Horqin Left Wing Real Banner Tongliao city Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and 10 farmer households of the Han nationality in the neighborhood. Thirty sampling plots of homegardens are investigated. The result indicates there are 100 homegarden plants in Bashou village, 84 in Hariwusu livestock farm, and 87 in Gongjihao village. It involves the cultivated and wild vegetables, fruits, and plants used for ornamental, medicine and forage. The comparative analysis of species richness demonstrates, among these villages the species richness of Bashou village is highest, while Hariwusu livestock farm is lowest. The former village contributes greatly to the conservation of plant biodiversity. These differences result from their respectively different natural conditions, homegarden areas, homegarden history, homegarden management conditions, traditional knowledge and culture understanding of homegarden manager, local farmers and herdsmen on homegarden plants. The homegarden plants from the three investigated villages are cataloged preliminary in the end of the paper. 相似文献

The main purpose of this study was to examine the effects of plant species diversity and functional composition (the identity of the plant functional groups) on ecosystem stability of Stipa communities in the Inner Mongolia Plateau. The research work was based on a 12-year study (from 1984 to 1995) of species abundance, diversity, and primary productivity of four Stipa communities, i.e. S. baicalensis Roshev., S. grandis P. Smirn., S. krylovii Roshev., and S. klemenzii Roshev. respectively. The Shnnon-Wiener index was used as a measurement of plant diversity, while functional composition was used to differentiate the functional groups that were included in the communities. The plant species of four Stipa communities were classified into functional groups based on the differences in life forms and ecological groups, which influence their performance in resource requirements, seasonality of growth, tolerance to water stress, and life history. Plant species were classified into five functional groups based on their differences in life form, shrubs and half shrubs, perennial bunch grasses, perennial rhizome grasses, forbs, annuals and biennials. Based on their differences in water requirement these species were classified into four functional groups: xerads, intermediate xerads, intermediate mesophytes, and mesophytes. The results showed: 1) Plant species diversity stabilized ecosystem processes. Shannon-Wiener index were 2.4014, 2.1720, 1.6248, 0.3543 from S. baicalensis community to S. grandis, S. krylovii and S. klemenzii community, respectively. The dynamics of the aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) for a 12-year's period showed a reverse pattern, the coefficients of variation of the four communities were 21.94%, 20.63%, 29.21% and 39.72% respectively. 2) The life form functional group component of diversity was a greater determinant of the ecosystem processes than the species component of diversity. The effects of perennial bunch grasses, perennial rhizome grasses and forbs on community stability were highly significant. 3) The ecological group component of diversity was also a great determinant of the ecosystem processes. The effects of xerads, intermediate xerads, and mesophytes on community stability were also very strong. 相似文献

The projected recession of forests in the forest–steppe ecotone under projected climate drying would restrict the carbon sink
function of terrestrial ecosystems. Previous studies have shown that the forest–steppe ecotone in the southeastern Inner Mongolia
Plateau originally resulted from climate drying and vegetation shifts during the mid- to late-Holocene, but the interrelated
processes of changing soil carbon storage and vegetation and soil shifts remain unclear. A total of 44 forest soil profiles
and 40 steppe soil profiles were excavated to determine soil carbon storage in deciduous broadleaf forests (DBF), coniferous
forests (CF) and steppe (ST) in this area. Carbon density was estimated to be 106.51 t/hm2 (DBF), 73.20 t/hm2 (CF), and 28.14 t/hm2 (ST) for these ecosystems. Soil organic carbon (SOC) content was negatively correlated with sand content (R = −0.879, P < 0.01, n = 42), and positively correlated with silt (R = 0.881, P < 0.01, n = 42) and clay (R = 0.858, P < 0.01, n = 42) content. Consistent trends between fractions of coarse sand and a proxy index of relative aridity in sediment sequences
from two palaeo-lakes further imply that climate drying reduced SOC through coarsening of the soil texture in the forest–steppe
ecotone. Changes in carbon storage caused by climate drying can be divided into two stages: (1) carbon storage of the ecosystem
was reduced to 68.7%, mostly by soil coarsening when DBF were replaced by CF at ~5,900 14C years before present (BP); and (2) carbon storage was reduced to 26.4%, mostly by vegetation shifts when CF were replaced
by ST at ~2,900 14C years BP. 相似文献

The environment and its natural resources are one of the richest treasures in the world. The lands, forests, lakes and rivers are not only beautiful spaces in the world, but these ecosystems are the basis of life for all the people and creatures who inhabit the earth. As inhabitants of the earth, we all have a responsibility to take care of these important resources-to protect our biological diversity-for ourselves, for future generations and for the many other creatures that we share the world with. Indeed, as stewards of the environment we must ensure that our actions, and those of the people around us, are not harmful or damaging to the earth. 相似文献

Hydrophilicity index is used to locate antigenic determinants on two related groups of proteins-myoglobin and hemoglobin.
The data on 41 species (including 34 mammals) of myoglobin show that average hydrophilicity for the complete myoglobin molecules
as well as the average hydrophilicity for all hydrophilic regions put together seem to remain constant; the variation in the
size and location of the antigenic determinants in these species is very small indicating that the antigenic sites are not
shifted during evolution. In the case of both the proteins there is a good agreement between the antigenic sites picked up
by using hydrophilicity index and the experimentally determined antigenic sites. The data on 56 species of hemoglobin α-chains
and 44 species of hemoglobinβ-chains showed that although there are few sites on hemoglobin which have remained invariant during evolution, there is a
significant variation in other sites in terms of either a splitting of a site, or a drastic change in the hydrophilicity values
and/or a length of the site. Comparison of the hydrophilicity data on these two groups of proteins suggests that hemoglobins
which perform a variety of functions as compared to myoglobins are evolving faster than myoglobins supporting the contention
of earlier workers. 相似文献

The Inclusion and Selection of Medicinal Plants in Traditional Pharmacopoeias—Evidence in Support of the Diversification Hypothesis. An ethnobotanical study with phytochemical analyses was undertaken to examine the medicinal plants used by residents of a
small rural community in northeastern Brazil. The present work tested two ideas that attempt to explain the inclusion and
selection of medicinal plants in a given culture: the diversification hypothesis and the concept of versatility. The study
involved 101 people and used semistructured interviews. A total of 61 plants were selected, including 25 exotic and 36 native
species. Plants were classified according to their habit and analyzed for their phytochemical components. In addition, the
relative importance (RI) of these plants was calculated, and a chemical diversity index (CDI) was created and applied to each
of the species. Exotic and native plants were found to have significantly different occurrences of certain classes of compounds;
this result supports the diversification hypothesis. It was therefore concluded that exotic plants are included in traditional
pharmacopoeias to fill therapeutic vacancies that native plants cannot satisfy. 相似文献

Vegetatively propagated material offers many advantages over seed material in forest tree breeding research and in reforestation programmes. Evidence is accumulating to suggest that using somatic embryos in forestry is a viable option. However, before somatic embryos can be used optimally in forestry, basic research aimed at increasing the number of responsive genotypes as well as the age of the primary explant is needed. This in turn requires the establishment of a basic understanding of the physiological and molecular processes that underlie the development of somatic embryos. The functions of genes and their developmental and tissue specific regulation are studied using transient and stable transformation techniques. The process of somatic embryogenesis can be divided into different steps: (1) initiation of somatic embryos from the primary explant, (2) proliferation of somatic embryos, (3) maturation of somatic embryos and (4) plant regeneration. Cortical cells in the primary explant are stimulated to go through repeated divisions so that dense nodules are formed from which somatic embryos differentiate. The first formed somatic embryos continue to proliferate and give rise to embryogenic cell lines. Embryogenic cell lines of Picea abies can be divided into two main groups A and B, based on morphology, growth pattern and secretion of proteins. Our results suggest that extracellular proteins play a crucial role in embryogenesis of Picea abies. Somatic embryos from group A can be stimulated to go through a maturation process when treated with abscisic acid. Mature somatic embryos can develop into plants.Abbreviations ABA

Phytoremediation is a nondestructive, cost-effective in-situ technology to clean up contaminated soils. In the case of contamination with petroleum hydrocarbons, plants enhance microbial degradation of the contaminant in the rhizosphere. The potential of this technology for the tropics should be high due to prevailing climatic conditions favoring plant growth and stimulating microbial activity. Investigations of the potential of tropical plants for phytoremediation, however, are scarce. The present work studied two grasses and six legumes from the eastern savannah of Venezuela on their reaction to crude oil contamination in soil. Results shall help to identify plants with a potential for phytoremediation and subsequent studies. Seedling emergence and biomass production were determined for plants growing in soil contaminated with 0%, 3%, and 5% heavy crude oil. Contamination had, in general, a tendential but not significant negative influence on seedling emergence. Dry matter production was reduced by only a few percent to up to 85%. Furthermore, in some legumes inhibition of nodulation was observed. The grass Brachiaria brizantha and the legumes Centrosema brasilianum and Calopogonium mucunoides are promising for phytoremediation because in contaminated soil they combined high seedling emergence with least affected biomass production. Since they are cultivated forage/soil cover species also in other regions of the tropics, their potential for phytoremediation of petroleum contaminated soils extends beyond Venezuela. 相似文献

The Amazon contains some of the most critical ecosystems on earth and Igapó forests are one of those ecosystems. They are flooded by “black-water”, leached runoff of forest litter. To help in our understanding of igapó forests, and to act as a resource for their future research, I review what we know about their composition and structure. I used my own sampling data to construct floristics tables of the tree species, and tables of physical structural parameters such as tree density, species richness basal area and above-ground biomass (AGB). In addition I used data gotten from literature searches on google scholar, biosys, WorldCat discovery services and other databases for all papers that sampled trees in plots within igapó forests. I found there was a total of 59 families sampled in all the plots. The families with the most genera were Fabaceae and Caesalpiniaceae, with the most species were Fabaceae and Euphorbiaceae, and with the most tree stems were Fabaceae and Euphorbiaceae. The most common genera were Mouriri and Lincania and the most common species were Virola elongate and Swartzia polyphylla. For structure, total stems had a wide range between 167 and 683 per ha, stem sizes generally conformed to a “reverse J” distribution pattern, mean stem sizes were ~20 cm diameter at breast height, there was a species richness range between 90 and 119 per ha, and igapó forests were more open than other forest-types in the Amazon basin. While these plots were in primary igapó forest, my samplings of secondary igapó forests showed they had a reduced structure compared to primary igapó forests but were similar within the different kinds of secondary igapó forests. 相似文献

The helminth fauna of eight species of wild ruminants and five species of domestic ruminants sharing common grassland in Mongolia was reviewed. A total of 108 species of helminths, belonging to 40 genera, 23 families, 11 superfamilies, 6 orders and 3 classes were reported in wild and domestic ruminants in Mongolia. Several new host–helminth associations have been recorded. Twenty seven helminth species have been found in certain host species for the first time in Mongolia. These included 2 species of trematodes, 2 species of cestodes and 23 species of nematodes. Helminths that are specific for some of the examined ruminant species were determined. However, wild animals may serve as a reservoir of helminth infections for domestic animals when sharing grassland in Mongolia. The helminth fauna of the ruminants with respect to occurrence, distribution, prevalence and intensity of infection was considered for six geographic regions of Mongolia. 相似文献

The gain of foldable wings is regarded as one of the key innovations enabling the present-day diversity of neopteran insects. Wing folding allows compact housing of the wings and shields the insect body from damage. Wing-fixing systems have evolved in some insects, probably to increase the durability of the shielding function by the wings. Bark lice (Psocodea) are known to possess a unique wing-to-wing repose coupling system, but a detailed morphological and evolutionary study of this system is lacking. In this study, we examined this repose coupling structure by SEM in 32 species including representatives of all three suborders of bark lice (Trogiomorpha, Troctomorpha and Psocomorpha). We concluded that the repose wing-coupling apparatus independently evolved twice within Psocodea. In Trogiomorpha, the apparatus is located on the subcostal vein of the forewing and is composed of elongated rib-like structures. In Troctomorpha and Psocomorpha, in contrast, the repose coupling structure is located on the radius vein of the forewing and is formed by a swollen vein. These morphological and developmental differences in the repose coupling structures also provide phylogenetic information at different systematic levels. 相似文献

Nature conservation in tropical developing countries is particularly challenging as the human population is highly dependent on natural resources. Several approaches, such as small-scale, community-based conservation projects aiming to generate benefits for the community, have been applied to alleviate poverty and at the same time promote conservation. In Madagascar such projects are considered a promising alternative as large-scale conservation often fails. However, few evaluations to date have analyzed both ecological and socioeconomic aspects. Our study focuses on the ecological and socioeconomic aspects of a small-scale, community-based conservation project, called “Park Bandro”, at Lake Alaotra, Madagascar. At first glance, the area seems to conserve its natural flora and fauna. However, closer examination shows that the park suffers from isolation, disconnectivity and illegal activities, while its management suffers from an unequal distribution of benefits and a lack of recognition at community level. We use our results to discuss where challenges arise and to draw recommendations which will be relevant beyond Lake Alaotra. We show that institutional settings can foster the detachment of local management associations from the community and facilitate elite capture. Existing conflicts of interests and a lack of transparency in administration hinders long-term success. The managerial framework needs to be revised and adapted to foster capacity building, providing a basis for negotiation with the community and the integration of different social groups. 相似文献

As interest in ethnics and their entrepreneurial activities has grown in recent years, sociologists have come to emphasize the importance of ethnic social structures as the source of actions propelling business growth. In a sign of convergence with the ‘new economic sociology’, recent literature suggests that embeddedness in ethnic networks and communities leads to cooperative, if not conformist, behaviour among ethnic economic actors. This article looks at the ‘other side’ of embeddedness, through a case‐study of African‐American, Caribbean, Korean and white construction contractors in New York City. I argue that, in construction, the embeddedness of economic behaviour in ongoing social relations among a myriad of social actors impedes access to outsiders. Embeddedness contributes to the liabilities of newness that all neophytes encounter, breeding a preference for established players with track records. However, the convergence of economic and ethnic ties has a further baneful effect, since outsiders also fall outside those networks that define the industrial community. While African‐American, Caribbean and Korean outsiders all experience these barriers in similar ways, they differ in the adaptive strategies that they have pursued. African Americans appear to be most disadvantaged, in part because they have been the most exposed to the social closure that results from the mobilization of white ethnics’ social capital. By contrast, Caribbeans and Koreans entered the labour market in societies where racial domination played little or no role in labour market outcomes ‐ a considerable asset since construction skills are transferable from one society to another. The Koreans appear to be the most embedded in ethnic networks, through which they secure jobs and skilled labour, though class factors play a role here as well and even the Koreans must reach out beyond the ethnic community for a clientele. By contrast, ethnic solidarity operates less powerfully among the black contractors, who are tied to a community where intra‐ethnic diversity and internal competition have grown as a result of immigration. In the absence of an ethnic market, black'entrepreneurs turn to the state, whose requirements and dependence on union labour expose black builders to risks from which their Korean counterparts are sheltered. 相似文献

Whether polygyny is harmful for women and their children is a long-standing question in anthropology. Few studies, however, have explored whether the effect of polygyny varies for women of different wife order, and whether there are different outcomes for their sons and daughters. Because males have higher reproductive variance, especially when they are allowed to take multiple wives, parents may have higher fitness returns from investing in sons over daughters in polygynous households. Moreover, previous studies have found that first wives and their children are advantaged over monogamous and second order wives (who marry into unions later). Here we test the predictions that children of first wives will have an advantage over children to monogamous or second wives, and that sex-biased investment will be strongest among first wives. Using data from the Arsi Oromo of Ethiopia (n ~ 6200 children) we test whether associations with mother's wife order extend beyond childhood into adulthood by examining simultaneously child survival, education and age at marriage. We find that polygynous first wives have no child survival disadvantage, first wives' sons benefit in terms of longer education and daughters have an earlier age at marriage than daughters of monogamous women. Second wives have lower child survival than monogamous women, but surviving children experience advantages in later life outcomes, particularly marriage. These findings challenge the view that polygynous women are always doing the ‘best of a bad job’. Rather, our results suggest that via their surviving sons and daughters there may be long-term benefits for some polygynous women. 相似文献

We used tomographic reconstructions of frozen–hydrated triad junctions to determine the structure of the macromolecular complex associated with calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), during excitation–contraction coupling. Using a rapid motif search algorithm with a reference motif of the ryanodine receptor (RyR) provided by single-particle cryo-electron microscopy, 49 receptors were located in five tomograms. Following co-alignment of the receptors and division into quadrants centered on the 4-fold symmetry axis, the receptors were classified using multivariate statistics. Global and class averages reveal that the SR membrane in the vicinity of the receptor is highly curved, creating an open vestibule with a gap of 4 nm between the receptor pore and the calsequestrin layer in the SR lumen. The in-plane densities in the calsequestrin layer have paracrystalline order, consistent with the packing of calsequestrin dimers in the three-dimensional crystal structure. Faint densities (“tethers”) extend to the calsequestrin layer from densities in the SR membrane located 15 nm from the symmetry axis of the RyR. In a class average of RyRs with proximal transverse tubules (TT), a cytoplasmic density is observed near the receptor that could represent the most consistent location of tethers observed in tomograms between the SR and TT membranes. 相似文献
