A article in Ethinic and Racial Studies by Walls and Williams makes inferences about religious discrimination in employment from interview data. We question the validity of treating lay people as experts and present large-scale data from two recent surveys and the 2001 Census which suggest that sectarianism is more a social myth than a social reality.  相似文献

This article analyses two dominant discourses of racial politics in Hawai'i and the work they do naturalizing haole (white people or whiteness in Hawai'i) in the islands. The first is the well-worn discourse of racial harmony representing Hawai'i as an idyllic racial paradise with no conflict or inequality. Frequently contrasting the islands with the ‘racist mainland’, this discourse circulates among many communities and is widely referenced. There is also a competing discourse of discrimination against non-locals which contends that haoles and non-local people of colour are disrespected and treated unfairly in Hawai'i. As negative referents for each other, these discourses work to reinforce one another and are historically linked. I suggest that the question of racial politics be reframed towards consideration of the processes of racialization themselves – towards a new way of thinking about racial politics in Hawai'i that breaks free of the not racist/racist dyad.  相似文献

The results of the Human Genome project will eventually have a great impact on medicine. However, the expansion of genetic testing due to these results exacerbates ethical, legal, and economic problems related to the project even today. Virtually free access to the data of testing would present an encroachment on personal freedom, since it may lead to discrimination based on genetic characteristics, i.e., genetic discrimination. Examples of this discrimination are already known; they include unsubstantiated refusals to employ carriers of certain alleles and denials of life or health insurance coverage and the ability to adopt a child. The use of genetic information in the insurance and employment fields is of primary concern due to its economic importance. Consumers consider genetic discrimination in these areas to be intolerable moral and social injustice. Genetic discrimination may eventually lead to the formation of a class of people who cannot buy an insurance policy, and, in the employment field, rejection of persons with "undesirable" genes infringes on citizens' rights to equal opportunity. However, selection for genetic characteristics in employment is justified if these characteristics determine sensitivity to occupational hazards.  相似文献

Background:

Obese individuals are frequent targets of weight‐based discrimination, particularly in the employment setting. Victims of weight discrimination have sought legal restitution like others who have suffered from different forms of discrimination. However, in the vast majority of the United States, body weight is not a protected class and weight‐based employment discrimination does not provide a basis for a legal claim. Some have attempted to seek legal recourse under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 or the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (collectively, the ADA), which protect against discrimination based on mental or physical disabilities in a variety of settings. Until recently, claims of weight discrimination under the ADA have also been largely unsuccessful. However, Congress recently passed the ADA Amendments Act, expanding the definition of what constitutes a disability and incorporating a broad view of ADA's coverage.

Objective:

This short communication provides an update of the law as it relates to employment based discrimination of obese people. The authors propose a legislative direction for future legal recourse.

Design and Methods:

The authors conducted legal research into the ADA Amendments Act, and synthesized this work relating to discrimination against weight in the employment context.

Results:

In light of the ADA Amendments Act, courts and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission have provided protection for severely obese people from discrimination based on actual or perceived disability in the employment context.

Conclusion:

The authors discuss this positive legal development and additionally propose a targeted solution to address weight discrimination in the employment setting. National polling suggests there is considerable public support for such a measure. The authors thus recommend the implementation of a “Weight Discrimination in Employment Act” modeled after the Age Discrimination in Employment Act to adequately address this pervasive and damaging injustice toward individuals who are affected by obesity.  相似文献

The psychological underpinnings of labor market discrimination were investigated by having participants from Israel, the West Bank and Germany (N = 205) act as employers in a stylized employment task in which they ranked, set wages, and imposed a minimum effort level on applicants. State self-esteem was measured before and after the employment task, in which applicant ethnicity and sex were salient. The applicants were real people and all behavior was monetarily incentivized. Supporting the full self-esteem hypothesis of the social identity approach, low self-esteem in women was associated with assigning higher wages to women than to men, and such behavior was related to the maintenance of self-esteem. The narrower hypothesis that successful intergroup discrimination serves to protect self-esteem received broader support. Across all participants, both ethnicity- and sex-based discrimination of out-groups were associated with the maintenance of self-esteem, with the former showing a stronger association than the latter.  相似文献

This article reviews information on discriminatory attitudes and behaviors against obese individuals, integrates this to show whether systematic discrimination occurs and why, and discusses needed work in the field. Clear and consistent stigmatization, and in some cases discrimination, can be documented in three important areas of living: employment, education, and health care. Among the findings are that 28% of teachers in one study said that becoming obese is the worst thing that can happen to a person; 24% of nurses said that they are “repulsed” by obese persons; and, controlling for income and grades, parents provide less college support for their overweight than for their thin children. There are also suggestions but not yet documentation of discrimination occurring in adoption proceedings, jury selection, housing, and other areas. Given the vast numbers of people potentially affected, it is important to consider the research‐related, educational, and social policy implications of these findings.  相似文献

Women in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo are increasingly entering new professions partly due to an increase in higher education levels. In so doing, and as they become more visible in political and economic spheres, women are subjected to new forms of moral suspicion. While women have historically maintained a strong presence in the informal sector, such as commerce, new urban modes of employment dictate new kinds of visibility. It is within this context that notions of femininity and female virtue in Kinshasa continue to be redefined. This article explores several modes of employment for women, such as money-changing, journalism, and politics as they relate to local concepts of encadrement (supervision) and débrouillardisme (resourcefulness). Further, it also examines the threat that a woman's social network outside of her kin poses to men, as well as how women's participation in the economic sphere can motivate distrust between the genders.  相似文献

Unfortunately, research shows that a portion of victims do in fact experience more than one victimization. Although this likelihood has been established, the reasons why some people are victimized more than once are not fully understood. One explanation centers on individual risk factors that, if left unchanged, will increase risk of further victimization. Previously unstudied, however, are genetic factors that may place and keep a victim at risk, even after an initial victimization. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, the current study addresses this gap. The findings reveal that there is in fact a genetic factor, the 7R allele of the DRD4 gene, that distinguishes individuals who have been victimized once from those who have been victimized multiple times.  相似文献

I examine how migrant–national encounters are morally framed through boundary making based on intersections of class, sexuality, ethnicity and migrancy. Encounters are a fruitful lens for the study of the everyday politics of diversity and belonging. By focusing on encounters it is possible to analyse whether close contact does in fact reduce prejudice, as has been argued in research on cosmopolitan urbanism. I present the notion of contact space as a conceptual tool for such analysis, as well as examples of contact spaces in the private and public spheres. I use ethnographic data on the employment of domestic workers in Naples, Italy, to show that close contact does not alleviate prejudices in societies that offer little possibility of social advancement for migrant workers.  相似文献

Rapid developments in genetic testing have given rise to fundamental ethical, legal, and social questions that need to be dealt with in society. Results of genetic tests may be of interest to third parties such as private insurance companies, leading to fears of genetic discrimination. In Germany, the Government adopted the Genetic Diagnosis Act (Gendiagnostikgesetz, GenDG) in 2009 to protect people from, inter alia, genetic discrimination in obtaining life or health insurance. Given the sensitivity of the topic, this legislation was continually revised between 2001 and 2009. In this article, we reconstruct the process of formulating the GenDG with regard to genetics and insurance. The article begins with the parliamentary Enquete Commission in 2000 to develop a strategy and recommendations for the governance of genetic diagnostics, and analyzes how these recommendations were applied during the legislative process. We demonstrate that the legislative process of GenDG was largely determined by conventional methods of governance, rather than Streitkultur called for by the Enquete Commission in 2002. We conclude that though Streitkultur was defined as a mechanism to develop a robust approach to the governance of genetic diagnostics, it failed to influence a crucial element in genetic testing and insurance; namely, to fully protect insurees from genetic discrimination.  相似文献

Olfaction plays an important role in the social communication of all prosimians. (The experiment reported in this paper forms part of an intensive chemobehavioral study of olfaction in Lemur catta (ring-tailed lemur) being carried out in this laboratory.) Five male Lemur cattawere tested on their behavioral responses to paired scent stimuli. Responses measured were (1) total investigation time, (2) arm-marking, (3) ABO/BO rubbing, and (4) flehmen. Males showed a strong discrimination between the scent stimuli,giving higher levels of response to female scent on measures 1, 3, and 4. This response suggests an olfactory-related preference by males for female scent under controlled conditions. This preference may be a consequence of the females’ dominance over males and the brevity of estrus in L. catta,both of which would favor such choice behavior.  相似文献

Summary We have studied the responses of leopard frogs,Rana pipiens, to live mealworms presented at different distances on the mid-sagittal plane. The response of normal frogs to stimuli at nearer distances consists of a direct snap whose amplitude increases with stimulus distance. For greater distances, the response consists of a forward hop whose amplitude also varies with stimulus distance. Over an intermediate range of distances, responses may be either snaps or hops. Whichever response occurs is of appropriate amplitude. The distance at which frogs switch from predominantly snapping responses to predominantly hopping responses increases with body size.Like normal frogs, unilaterally blinded frogs respond to stimuli at nearer distances with snaps whose amplitude varies with stimulus distance, switch from snapping to hopping over an intermediate range of distances, and respond to stimuli at greater distances with hops whose amplitude also increases with stimulus distance. In many cases, unilateral blinding did however result in a decrease in the distance at which the frogs switched from snapping to hopping. Such changes were not accompanied by the changes in snap or hop amplitude which would be expected if unilateral blinding resulted in generalized changes in distance judgement. Normal variations in snap amplitude and switches from snapping to hopping were also observed in frogs subjected to unilateral eye removal prior to the metamorphic eye migration which creates the adult binocular visual field.These results imply that neither distance discrimination nor any of the kinds of variation in motor output which occur with increasing stimulus distance necessarily depend on binocular cues. The behaviors studied also appear to be largely independent of normal binocular experience. More generally, our results suggest that the movement triggered by a stimulus at a particular location is not determined entirely by the retinal and superficial tectal region activated but rather reflects a combination of a retinal local sign signal with other kinds of information. The latter probably include signals related to stimulus distance and body posture, and may include signals related to body size as well.  相似文献

The evolution of extravagant sexual traits by sensory exploitation occurs if males incidentally evolve features that stimulate females owing to a pre‐existing environmental response that arose in the context of natural selection. The sensory exploitation process is thus expected to leave a specific genetic imprint, a pleiotropic control of the original environmental response and the novel sexual response in females. However, females may be subsequently selected to improve their discrimination of environmental and sexual stimuli. Accordingly, responses may have diverged and the original genetic architecture may have been modified. These possibilities may be considered by studying the genetic architecture of responses to male signals and to the environmental stimuli that were purportedly ‘exploited’ by those signals. However, no previous study has addressed the genetic control of sensory exploitation. We investigated this question in an acoustic pyralid moth, Achroia grisella, in which a male ultrasonic song attracts females and perception of ultrasound likely arose in the context of detecting predatory bats. We examined the genetic architecture of female response to bat echolocation signals and to male song via a cartographic study of quantitative trait loci (QTL) influencing these receiver traits. We found several QTL for both traits, but none of them were colocalized on the same chromosomes. These results indicate that – to the extent to which male A. grisella song originated by the process of sensory exploitation – some modification of the female responses occurred since the origin of the male signal.  相似文献

The significance of kin discrimination for the evolution of sociality is theoretically important. The behavioural response ofPseudoregma bambucicola soldiers to aphids from other colonies was studied to examine the possibility of context-specific kin discrimination. When non-kin aphids were artificially introduced into experimental colonies, they were never killed or removed by soldiers. Field experiments revealed that the soldiers frequently attacked distantly related species such asAstegopteryx bambucifoliae andCeratoglyphina styracicola, but rarely conspecific aphids or congeneric species such asP. koshunensis andP. alexanderi. Another experiment showed that the soldiers showed altruistic defence even when coexisting with non-kin reproductives. These results agree with and extend the results from previous studies of kin discrimination in social aphids. The absence of kin discrimination suggests that some other factors besides higher genetic relatedness may play a prominent role in the evolutionary maintenance of soldier behaviour in aphids.  相似文献

The early social environment can have substantial, lifelong effects on vertebrate social behaviour, which can be mediated by developmental plasticity of brain gene expression. Early‐life effects can influence immediate behavioural responses towards later‐life social challenges and can activate different gene expression responses. However, while genomic responses to social challenges have been reported frequently, how developmental experience influences the shape of these genomic reaction norms remains largely unexplored. We tested how manipulating the early social environment of juvenile cooperatively breeding cichlids, Neolamprologus pulcher, affects their behavioural and brain genomic responses when competing over a resource. Juveniles were reared either with or without a breeder pair and a helper. Fish reared with family members behaved more appropriately in the competition than when reared without. We investigated whether the different social rearing environments also affected the genomic responses to the social challenge. A set of candidate genes, coding for hormones and receptors influencing social behaviour, were measured in the telencephalon and hypothalamus. Social environment and social challenge both influenced gene expression of egr‐1 (early growth response 1) and gr1 (glucocorticoid receptor 1) in the telencephalon and of bdnf (brain‐derived neurotrophic factor) in the hypothalamus. A global analysis of the 11 expression patterns in the two brain areas showed that neurogenomic states diverged more strongly between intruder fish and control fish when they had been reared in a natural social setting. Our results show that same molecular pathways may be used differently in response to a social challenge depending on early‐life experiences.  相似文献

Lizards use visual and/or chemical cues to locate and identify food. The ability to discriminate prey chemical cues is affected by phylogeny, diet, and foraging mode. Augrabies flat lizards (Platysaurus broadleyi) are omnivorous members of the lizard clade Scleroglossa. Within Scleroglossa, all previously tested omnivores are capable of both prey and plant chemical discrimination. At Augrabies Falls National Park, P. broadleyi feed on both insects (black flies) and plant material (figs), and as scleroglossans, are predicted to discriminate both plant and prey chemicals. However, Platysaurus broadleyi use visual, not chemical cues, to detect and capture black flies, which occur in large concentrations in the study area. We tested free-ranging individuals for the ability to discriminate insect and plant chemicals from controls. There was a significant stimulus effect such that lizards tongue-flicked fig-labelled tiles significantly more than the remaining stimuli, spent more time at the fig-labelled tile, and attempted to eat fig-labelled tiles more often than tiles labelled with control or insect stimuli. Platysaurus broadleyi is exceptional in being the first lizard shown to possess plant chemical discrimination but to lack prey chemical discrimination. We suggest that an absence of prey chemical discrimination may be a consequence of foraging behaviour and environmental effects. Because insect prey are highly clumped, abundant, and aerial, profitable ambushing using visual cues may have relaxed any selective pressure favouring insect prey chemical discrimination. However, a more likely alternative is that responses to figs are gustatory, whereas as prey chemical discrimination and plant chemical discrimination are usually mediated by vomerolfaction.Communicated by P.K. Several studies have suggested a greater role for olfactory cues in avian social interactions than previously recognized, but few have explicitly investigated the effect of odor on parental behavior. We present results from a preliminary study in which we applied hetero‐ and conspecific preen gland secretions, which are known to contain volatile compounds, to the nests and eggs of incubating female dark‐eyed juncos Junco hyemalis. The responses to these two conditions were compared to the responses of females whose nests were treated with their own preen oil as a control condition, and to females whose nests were treated with the vehicle only. We found that females significantly reduced incubation bout length, a form of parental care, in response to alien secretions, more so if they came from a heterospecific than a conspecific. Females did not reduce incubation bout length in response to their own preen oil or to a vehicle‐only control. These results suggest that odors in the nest may influence avian parental care. However, the behavioral change was only temporary and had no effect on later hatching success. In our study population, brood parasitism by brown‐headed cowbirds is common, but resulting nest abandonment is rare; juncos are frequently able to successfully breed even with cowbird nestlings in their nests. Thus, we suggest that more extreme behavioral responses to alien odor, such as nest abandonment or egg ejection, may not be adaptive and should not be expected.  相似文献

In social insects the discrimination process of non-nestmates is generally considered to be based on detection of cuticular hydrocarbons. The required quantity of the stimulus is fundamental but unknown. In laboratory conditions, we demonstrated that Aphaenogaster senilis ants are able to discriminate the presence of heterocolonial cuticular hydrocarbons on filter papers at concentrations of 0.05 ng/mm2, the equivalent of 10−4 worker. This result does not mean that workers are not able to recognize their own colony odour at lower concentrations, but that the discrimination response appears at very low levels.  相似文献

Ethnic elders.     
The numbers of elderly people from ethnic groups within Britain is rising rapidly as postwar immigrants age. Ethnic elders face problems owing to age-associated increased risks of common chronic diseases, racial discrimination, and poor access to many health services and social services. This disadvantage will be alleviated through increased understanding of health beliefs held by ethnic elders and ensuring better access to services through mechanisms such as employment of more staff from ethnic minority groups in senior positions, better training of staff, and more appropriate and sensitive environments. The myths that family care is sufficient, that no use of services implies no need, and that assimilation into the majority population will occur must be discounted.  相似文献
