The analysis of Co(II)-apoHc complexes of two arthropodan species (freshwater crayfish): Orconectes limosus and Astacus astacus enabled to reach some conclusions about possible cobalt binding sites in the hemocyanin molecules. The occurrence of binding sites for Co(II) at sites other than the active center has been demonstrated. We excluded the possibility of strong binding of EDTA-non-removable cobalt ions in the binding sites occupied by copper. Drawing on the growing literature on Muslim women’s activism, this paper explores grammars of action that frame political mobilizations of Muslim women in the UK. By taking a broad view of political activism, we identify acts and practices of citizenship through which Muslim women activists engage with, reinterpret and challenge social norms. The article critically engages with dominant readings of post-migration minorities’ political mobilization through the lens of citizenship regimes and draws attention to more processual and agency-centred perspectives on citizenship. We focus on two salient themes that Bristol-based Muslim activists were concerned with: mobilizing against violence against women, manifested in the anti-FGM campaign by Integrate Bristol, and attempts to re-negotiate the terms of participation in religious spaces, manifested in claims for more inclusive mosques. In both instances, mobilization was not confined to the local community or national level, but supported by and embedded in related transnational struggles.  相似文献

The effects of community dynamics in birds on the optimisation of their migratory strategies is a neglected area. For three years, we captured migrating warblers on autumn passage at a coastal site in western Britain. We used canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to assess spatio‐temporal patterns of occurrence, and principal components analysis (PCA) to assess morphological variation. We calculated Euclidean distance in ordination and morphological space to assess separation between species pairs, and used Monte‐Carlo simulations to assess the probability of pattern occurring by chance.
Ordination revealed five species‐groups separated by habitat type and time of passage. Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus and Sedge Warbler A. schoenobaenus (Group 1) occurred in wet habitats and peaked simultaneously. In drier habitats with scrub, a first wave of Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla (Group 2) significantly preceded Grasshopper Warbler Locustella naevia, Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus, Whitethroat Sylvia communis and Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca (Group 3), which in all but one case (Lesser Whitethroat) significantly preceded Garden Warbler Sylvia borin (Group 4); peak numbers of Chiffchaffs Phylloscopus collybita and a second wave of Blackcaps (Group 5) occurred later still. Age effects were found only in Acrocephalus, with adults peaking before juveniles.
For seven out of eight pairings within genera, separation in time of passage increased significantly in species that were morphologically similar. The only exception was Blackcap and Lesser Whitethroat which differed substantially in both passage time and morphology. Monte‐Carlo simulations showed that chance was unlikely to be responsible for ordination patterns, nor for inter‐specific variation in passage time and its relationship with species morphology.
These data provide annually consistent evidence that migrating sylviid warblers are separated ecologically by habitat use, time of passage and morphology: we cannot refute the hypothesis that community dynamics have influenced niche use and autumn migratory strategy. We call for further tests of the ‘migrant interaction’ hypothesis in other geographical locations and taxa, particularly where migrants are allopatric and interact ecologically only on migration.  相似文献

Environmental policy and in particular the European water legislation, in the framework of the EU Groundwater Directive, has started to consider groundwater not only as a resource but as a living ecosystem. A precondition for comprehensive groundwater protection is thus the assessment of the biological and ecological state. The assessment of ecosystems requires consideration of ecological criteria, which so far are not available for groundwater systems. In the framework of a national project, the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) supports a consortium of scientists and stakeholders from water boards and regional environmental authorities to develop a first concept for an ecological assessment scheme for groundwater ecosystems. The attempts towards an integrative concept include the following steps: (i) selection of appropriate biological and ecological parameters, (ii) typology of groundwater ecosystems, (iii) derivation of a reference status (Leitbild) and natural background values for biological variables, (iv) identification of potential bioindicators and definition of threshold values, and (v) development of an assessment model. These proposed steps are discussed on the basis of a data set from two groundwater landscapes in Southern Germany. Investigations considered three different spatial units, i.e. the habitat unit at the local scale, and the aquifer type unit as well as the landscape unit at the regional scale. Fauna as well as bacterial communities could provide valuable ecological information on the ecosystems status. The paper reviews ‘state of the art’ knowledge and evaluates the near future perspectives for the development and implementation of groundwater ecosystems assessment programmes.  相似文献

Triclosan-bacteria interactions: single or multiple target sites?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
AIMS: To investigate the inhibitory and lethal effects of triclosan against several micro-organisms at different stages of their phase of population growth. METHODS AND RESULTS: Triclosan minimum inhibitory concentrations against several test organisms were determined in broth and agar using standard protocols. The bisphenol effect on bacterial population growth kinetics was studied using the Bioscreen C microbial growth analyser. Finally, the efficacy of triclosan on phases of bacterial growth was determined using a standard suspension test. The duration of the lag phase for all micro-organisms tested was increased by bisphenol in a concentration-dependent manner. The population growth kinetics of the micro-organisms was also altered after biocide exposure. At higher concentrations, triclosan was bactericidal regardless of their phase of population growth, although population in stationary phase and particularly, washed suspensions, were more resilient to the lethality of triclosan. This lethal activity was concentration and contact time dependent, and in some instances, bactericidal activity of bisphenol was observed within 15 s. CONCLUSIONS: Low concentrations of triclosan affected the growth of several bacteria, while higher concentrations were bactericidal regardless of the bacterial phase of population growth. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Here, we presented clear evidence that the interaction of triclosan with the bacterial cell is complex and its lethality cannot be explained solely by the inhibition of metabolic pathways such as the enoyl acyl-reductase. However, the inhibition of such pathways cannot be ruled out as part of the lethal mechanism of the bisphenol at a low bactericidal concentration.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article analyses network organizations founded by descendants of Turkish migrants in the Netherlands and France. By surveying members of two such organizations and interviewing several of their board members, we learn how these organizations function, their success in building and extending social networks, and their efficacy at improving labour market prospects for young second-generation professionals of Turkish descent. Our findings reveal a hybrid structure, whereby the organizations gear many of their activities towards mainstream society. In comparison to traditional immigrant organizations, their attitude is more open to other social groups, yet they still have a clear stronghold in the ethnic immigrant community. We conclude that ethnicity is not the main element in the successful second generation’s organizing process. Factors such as educational trajectories, professional ambitions, feelings of responsibility for other members and newly acquired socioeconomic status are the main reasons for this group to organize.  相似文献

It is now well recognized that cells traffic in both directions between fetus and mother during pregnancy. Moreover, fetal cells have been found to persist for years, probably for a lifetime, in the circulation of healthy women. Harboring of cells from another individual at low levels is called microchimerism. Women have a predilection to autoimmune disease, and chronic graft-versus-host disease, a condition of human chimerism, shares similarities with some autoimmune diseases. The specific HLA genes of donor and host are known to be of central importance in graft-versus-host disease, and HLA class II genes are important in autoimmune disease. Considered together, these observations led to the hypothesis that microchimerism and HLA genes of host and non-host cells are involved in autoimmune diseases. Alternative sources of microchimerism include transfer from a twin or the mother during pregnancy, or from blood transfusion. Studies of systemic sclerosis, primary biliary cirrhosis, Sj?grens syndrome, pruritic eruption of pregnancy, myositis, and thyroid disease have both lent support and raised doubts about a potential role of microchimerism in autoimmune disease.  相似文献

Summary It has been proposed that within rather broad habitat types the distribution and abundance of bird species may be more closely associated with plant taxonomic composition than with the structure and configuration of the vegetation. Birds from a sample of eight representative grassland habitats in middle and western North America are consistent with this hypothesis. Over half (55%) of the variation in bird community composition was associated with floristic variation, but only a third (35%) was associated with physiognomy. Separating the interacting effects of floristics and physiognomy from each other served to accentuate the difference between them with respect to the avifauna. It is postulated that bird species/plant taxa associations, especially within similar habitat types, are mediated by the specific food resources that different plant taxa provide. Summary indices such as diversity measures obscure the taxonomic information content of plant or animal assemblages, and the use of such indices has likely impeded detection of the relationships described here.  相似文献

The β-lactam-recognizing enzymes (BLRE) make up a superfamily of largely bacterial proteins that include, principally, the dd-peptidases and β-lactamases. The former enzymes catalyze the final step in bacterial cell wall biosynthesis and are inhibited by β-lactam antibiotics, while the latter enzymes catalyze the hydrolytic destruction of β-lactams and represent a major source of bacterial resistance to these antibiotics. The active site of this superfamily of enzymes includes a Ser1/Ser2(Tyr)/Lys1(His)/Lys2 tetrad in which Ser1 is a nucleophilic catalyst that becomes acylated in the formation of an acyl-enzyme intermediate. An oxyanion hole is also present. The amidase signature (AS) enzymes represent another serine amidohydrolase superfamily with no overall structural resemblance to the BLRE. The active site is characterized by a Ser1/Ser2/Lys1/NH tetrad and an oxyanion hole. We point out that there is a close spatial overlap between the two tetrads and speculate that this has arisen from a process of convergent evolution driven by a mechanistic imperative. Conversion of the backbone NH group of the AS tetrad into Lys2 of the BLRE is rationalized and leads to another mechanistic possibility that may dominate BLRE catalysis. The active site triads of other serine amidohydrolases are also briefly and comparatively discussed.  相似文献

Homing endonucleases are classified into four families based on active site sequence motifs. Through structural comparisons we have found structural similarities between the endonuclease domain of colicin E9, an H-N-H motif-containing enzyme, and both the non-specific nuclease from Serratia and I-PpoI, a His-Cys box-containing homing endonuclease. Our comparison identifies conservation at the heart of all three enzyme active sites and so argues for a re-classification of H-N-H and His-Cys box homing endonucleases as a single family. We suggest the 'betabetaalpha-Me family' of homing enzymes to reflect the three elements of secondary structure and the metal ion that define the motif.  相似文献

The intensified use of biomass as an energy source is an often-repeated goal of the German and European climate protection policy. Therefore, framework conditions have been created in recent years, which allow for a wider use of biomass within the energy system especially for a provision of electricity and fuels. Due to this policy, Germany, for example, has emerged as the leading producer of biogas from energy crops and fatty methyl ester (FAME) in Europe. However, due to the high energy price level, the use of biomass for heating purposes and as a renewable raw material have increased at the same time. To supply the obviously increased demand for biomass or biobased energy carriers cost efficiently, nationwide and to some extend even global markets are under development at present. As the demand for biomass is expected to continue to increase strongly, it is feared that an increasing competition with the use for food and fodder as well as a raw material might occur in the years to come. Against this background we have analyzed the competitions that can be expected, and the influence that they may have on the further expansion of the use of biomass for energy production. Experiences from Germany are provided exemplarily. Based on this, it is concluded that measures need to be taken to support an efficient and sustainable use of bioenergy in the future.  相似文献

This review traces the emergence of biotechnology as a new scientific discipline since the 1980s, when it became a major economic force. Significant changes in theoretical perception, research strategies, aims, and experimental methods, mainly in genetic engineering techniques, occurred during this period. The article is based on an analysis of its scientific status over four decades: the 60s and 70s when work in the field proceeded in different disciplines with a low level of coherence and little integration, then a significant change during the 80s and 90s when common approaches and the merging of molecular biology and biochemical engineering created a new discipline. The analysis covers scientific highlights and outstanding technical progress, presenting two studies undertaken by scientific and governmental agencies in Germany and the USA, as well as results of interviews and a questionnaire dealing with the scientific status of biotechnology. Answers to the questionnaire were obtained from internationally known scientists and from young scientists with biotechnology degrees. The results collected trace the transition of biotechnology from heterogeneous specialties and approaches towards a scientific discipline of its own. A hypothesis is put forward suggesting a new common paradigm allowing for a coherent perception the of phenomena observed.  相似文献

The question whether communities should be viewed as superorganisms or loose collections of individual species has been the subject of a long‐standing debate in ecology. Each view implies different spatiotemporal community patterns. Along spatial environmental gradients, the organismic view predicts that species turnover is discontinuous, with sharp boundaries between communities, while the individualistic view predicts gradual changes in species composition. Using a spatially explicit multispecies competition model, we show that organismic and individualistic forms of community organisation are two limiting cases along a continuum of outcomes. A high variance of competition strength leads to the emergence of organism‐like communities due to the presence of alternative stable states, while weak and uniform interactions induce gradual changes in species composition. Dispersal can play a confounding role in these patterns. Our work highlights the critical importance of considering species interactions to understand and predict the responses of species and communities to environmental changes.  相似文献

According to the structure-to-function paradigm proteins fold into a 3D structure for exerting their functions. Intrinsically destructured proteins with important biological functions have been identified and studied, but they assume a structure when interacting in the cell with their partners. There are instead bactericidal proteins, endowed also with other diverse activities (glycoside hydrolases, RNases, a defensin), which are lost when the proteins are denatured or inactivated, whereas the bactericidal activity is surprisingly conserved.The hypothesis is advanced that these proteins are not bactericidal per se, but because they store in their amino acid sequences peptide segments that display bactericidal activity when cut out as free peptides from the proteins. These bactericidal proteins would thus be merely containers of bactericidal peptides.  相似文献

Recent studies suggest that species with similar functional traits will have similar effects on ecosystems, but evidence for redundancy of species impacts is limited. Here we use a long‐term experiment to gain insight into functional relationships within a desert rodent community. Experimental removal of kangaroo rats, Dipodomys spp., coupled with the recent, serendipitous colonization of a single species of large pocket mouse Chaetodipus baileyi yielded treatments that differed in the diversity of large granivorous rodents present. We evaluated functional overlap of C. baileyi and the other resident large granivores (i.e. the kangaroo rats) by comparing total energy use of granivorous rodents and total abundance and species richness of small granivores across treatments before and after the arrival of C. baileyi. We found that C. baileyi almost completely compensated for the changes in these key ecosystem‐level properties caused by kangaroo rat removal, but it differentially impacted the population dynamics of individual small granivorous rodent species. Thus, its effects were largely complementary, rather than redundant, to those of the missing kangaroo rats. Although short‐term or single‐measure analyses may suggest redundancy, our results support the longstanding dictum that niches of coexisting species are often similar but rarely, if ever, identical.  相似文献
