Despite the potential importance of predation as a process structuring coral reef fish communities, few studies have examined how the diet of piscivorous fish responds to fluctuations in the abundance of their prey. This study focused on two species of rock-cod, Cephalopholis cyanostigma (Valenciennes, 1828) and Cephalopholis boenak (Bloch, 1790) (Serranidae), and monitored their diet in two different habitats (patch and contiguous reef) at Lizard Island on the northern Great Barrier Reef, Australia, over a 2-year period. The abundance of the rock-cods and the abundance and family composition of their prey were monitored at the same time. Dietary information was largely collected from regurgitated samples, which represented approximately 60% of the prey consumed and were unbiased in composition. A laboratory experiment showed that fish were digested approximately four times faster than crustaceans, leading to gross overestimation of the importance of crustaceans in the diet. When this was taken into account fish were found to make up over 90% of the diet of both species. Prey fish of the family Apogonidae, followed by Pomacentridae and Clupeidae, dominated the diet of both species of rock-cod. The interacting effect of fluctuations in prey abundance and patterns of prey selection caused dietary composition to vary both temporally and spatially. Mid-water schooling prey belonging to the families Clupeidae and to a lesser extent Caesionidae were selected for over other families. In the absence of these types of prey, apogonids were selected for over the more reef-associated pomacentrids. A laboratory experiment supported the hypothesis that such patterns were mainly due to prey behaviour. Feeding rates of both species of rock-cod were much higher in summer than in winter, and in summer they concentrated on small recruit sized fish. However, there was little variation in feeding rates between habitats, despite apparent differences in prey abundance. In summary, our observations of how the feeding ecology of predatory fish responded to variation in prey abundance provide potential mechanisms for how predation may affect the community structure of coral reef fishes.  相似文献

A number of different generalist (polyphagous) predators occur in agroecosystems. Yet their biocontrol potential has been little investigated in detail. Philodromus species (Philodromidae) belong to the dominant spider species occurring in commercial orchards. We studied in detail the trophic functional traits of Philodromus albidus, Philodromus aureolus, and Philodromus cespitum (Philodromidae) by means of (1) the analysis of natural prey; and (2) experiments on acceptance of a variety of prey taxa. We found that the three philodromids are euryphagous. We classified prey species into three categories according to their function in the orchard: beneficial species, indifferent species, and pests. Philodromid spiders captured mostly other spiders in the field because spiders were most available. As concerns pests, the philodromids preyed mostly on Brachycera and Sternorrhyncha. They selected Acari and Brachycera. Indifferent species, such as Collembola and Nematocera, were also highly selected. In the laboratory, philodromids accepted mostly pests, such as lepidopterans, brachycerans, and aphids, while other spiders were accepted the least. The three philodromids have differentiated trophic niches with respect to prey size not only in the adult stage but throughout their ontogenetic development: P. albidus utilized smaller prey than the other two species. We conclude that the philodromids have a potential as biocontrol agents because they prey mostly on pests but their predation pressure is reduced due to higher selectivity for the indifferent fauna.  相似文献

The structure of the zooplankton community in an estuary adjacent to the Admiral álvaro Alberto Nuclear Power Plant at Angra dos Reis, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was studied from 2001 through 2005. At that time, the power plant had been operating for 20 years. The results were compared with a previous study in 1991–1993. The zooplankton was sampled 4 times a year, in vertical hauls using a 150 μm net, at two fixed points near the plant’s intake and discharge sites. Temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll a were measured. The water of Ribeira Bay is warm, with salinities typical of Coastal Water and more saline waters. Zooplankton density at the discharge site (Mean: 245,434 ind m−3, SD: 335,358 ind m−3) was higher than that at the intake site (Mean: 84,634 ind m−3, SD: 101,409 ind m−3). A total of 121 mesozooplankton taxa were recorded from 2001 to 2005. Copepoda constituted the most common taxon and comprised more than 57% of the total zooplankton, followed by cladocers and gastropod larvae. A seasonal zooplankton cycle was observed only during 2004; in other years, the plankton varied only between years. Overall mesozooplankton abundance at the discharge site was similar to levels reported from the inner zone of this estuary in 1991–1993. Surface temperature was the important factor structuring the zooplankton community at the discharge site. No effect on the mesozooplankton by passage through the condensers could be discerned, and no permanent negative influence on the plankton populations could be detected. Guest editors: U. M. The Indian horseshoe crab, Tachypleus gigas (Müller), is a benthic feeder which subsists mainly on molluscs, decayed organic matter and polychaetes, in order of prevalence. A strong and positive preference was recorded for molluscs over other food organisms. The intensity of feeding was maximum during the north-east monsoon (November to January) in females and during the intermonsoon season (February to May) in males. 2002年3~10日在广西南宁地区的宁明县和龙州县,用超声波监测和网捕法确定扁颅蝠与褐扁颅蝠的捕食区,在捕食区内用粘捕法调查潜在的食物量;用粪便分析法确定食物组成。在宁明县和龙州县扁颅蝠和褐扁颅蝠的潜在食物量都是以双翅目昆虫为主(45.93%以上),其次为鞘翅目(12.59%以上)和膜翅目(7.47%以上);但双翅目、膜翅目在两地差异显著。宁明县扁颅蝠的食物组成以双翅目(40.33%)和膜翅目(38.46%)为主,鞘翅目(16.07%)次之;龙州县扁颅蝠和褐扁颅蝠食物组成中以膜翅目(63.37%,62.34%)为主,其次为双翅目(21.57%,29.62%)、鞘翅目(11.59%,5.96%);对比两地扁颅蝠的食物组成发现,膜翅目和双翅目差异极显著。对比食物组成与潜在食物量发现,两种蝙蝠对膜翅目为正选择,对其他目负选择或无选择,均为选择性捕食者。  相似文献

During a survey of the biota of the St. Lucia Estuary in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa, a number of Gastrotricha were found among samples of meiofauna. Fresh, marine sediment yielded several specimens belonging to a total of seven species. Of these, two are already known from other regions (i.e., Dactylopodola australiensis and Heteroxenotrichula squamosa), one is described as new to science (Halichaetonotus sanctaeluciae sp. n.), while the remaining four (Pseudostomella sp., Halichaetonotus sp.1, Halichaetonotus sp. 2, Xenotrichula sp.) require further collections and analysis, in order to establish the extent of their affiliation to species already described. General appearance, shape of hydrofoil scale and the occurrence of three long spines on the dorsal side make the new species most closely related to Halichaetonotus australis and Halichaetonotus marivagus. The key differences from these taxa and between Halichaetonotus sanctaeluciae sp. n. and Halichaetonotus aculifer are discussed.  相似文献

Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in Appalachia experience prolonged periods of poor feeding conditions, particularly during summer and fall. To determine which prey organisms are important in sustaining brook trout populations, we monitored the feeding patterns of a population of brook trout over the course of 2 years with an emphasis on seasonal change. We employed a bioenergetics model to estimate whether or not each fish had obtained enough energy to meet daily metabolic demand. As a result, qualitative comparisons between fish feeding above maintenance ration (successfully feeding fish) and fish feeding below maintenance ration (unsuccessfully feeding fish) were possible. With the exception of winter, brook trout derived significantly more energy from terrestrial organisms than aquatic organisms. During each season, successfully feeding brook trout fed on greater proportions of specific prey types. Terrestrial Coleoptera and Lepidoptera consistently proved to be important prey during warmer seasons, while large organisms such as vertebrates and crayfish appeared to be important during winter. Our findings suggest that terrestrial organisms are more important than aquatic organisms in sustaining brook trout populations. Further, certain large and abundant terrestrial taxa are critical in providing energy to brook trout.  相似文献

Participatory management approaches are increasingly recognized as an effective strategy for enabling the sustainable use of natural resources. The southeast coast of St. Lucia is one of the sites where a particular form of participatory management, a co-management regime, was recently developed to control the sea urchin fishery. The Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI), a NGO based in Vieux-Fort, St. Lucia, played a key role in the development of this co-management arrangement. This case study of the sea urchin fishery in Vieux-Fort examines the extent of the devolution of authority to locally-based sea urchin harvesters, explores the potential contribution of local knowledge to the understanding of sea urchin behavior, and points to elements of a strategy aimed at strengthening the organizational capacity of the core group of sea urchin harvesters. The study addresses both present practice and future possibilities in response to concrete questions raised by participants in the study.  相似文献

Vendace (Coregonus albula, L.) is in the southern part of its distribution area during the summer period restricted to hypolimnion. Food is dominated by Bosmina coregoni and Daphnia sp. The selectivity index is highest for large cladocerans and large copepods.The pelagic crustacean fauna in vendace lakes is dominated by small species like Bosmina coregoni, Daphnia cristata, Thermocyclops and Mesocyclops sp. and Eudiaptomus sp. During periods of maximum vendace abundance only Bosmina coregoni is left of the cladocerans, while the abundance of cyclopoid copepods increases.  相似文献

Yoldia hyperborea (Lovén) is a protobranch bivalve of circumboreal distribution and an important bioturbator of muddy sediments of cold-water embayments in Newfoundland, Canada, where it is exposed to a strong seasonal input of sinking phytoplankton during spring, sporadic events of sediment resuspension, and sediment of low nutritional value during winter. To explain field-observed patterns of population dynamics, we quantified the behavioural response of Y. hyperborea to pulses of settling algae and sediment resuspension events, and hypothesised that Y. hyperborea behaviour is modified during settling of nutrient-rich organic matter. Yoldia hyperborea responded rapidly to the arrival of settling microalgae by extending its siphons into the water column. Once the pulse of algal material reached the sediment the animals partially emerged, extended the palp proboscides over the sediment surface and maintained close contact with the area of highest algal concentration. In contrast, the activity of animals not exposed to settling algae or to resuspended sediment was primarily restricted to strata below the sediment surface. Thus the predominant subsurface feeding behaviour of Yoldia hyperborea is switched to surface deposit-feeding as a response to cues contained in microalgae. Results suggest active suspension-feeding during algal sedimentation events, although deposit-feeding resumes once the algae are no longer in suspension, and suspension-feeding is probably of little nutritional significance. The rapid behavioural response of Y. hyperborea to the influx of high quality food, such as fresh microalgae, is probably an adaptive foraging strategy to a food-limited environment and suggests higher bioturbation rates of surface sediments during spring, a key role being played by the protobranch in redistribution of labile phytodetritus within the benthos.  相似文献

The behavior to foods in rats (Rattus norvegicus) was investigated in a seminatural enclosure and in a straight alley in the laboratory. In both situations, the size of food (0.045-, 1-, and 3-g pellets were used in the enclosure and 0.045-, 0.2-, 1-, and 3-g pellets in the alley) and distance between food sites and nest site (1.8, 3.6, 5.4, and 7.2 m in the enclosure and 2, 4, and 6 m in the alley) were varied. In both situations, when food was presented in only 1 place, the food carrying behavior increased as the size of food increased from 0.045 to 1-g. One and three g pellets were always carried, regardless of the distance to nest. On the other hand, when multiple food sites were presented in the alley, rats were more likely to carry small pellet from the further food site, whereas large pellet was always carried and were not influenced by the distance. The behavior to foods in the enclosure, however, was not influenced in either food site condition. This might be due to the difference in familiarity to the environment and anxiety from perceived predation risk.  相似文献

This paper presents results on how intensive fishing (fish removal) islikely to influence the structure of lake foodwebs. The work is based on acomprehensive dynamic lake ecosystem model, LakeWeb, which accounts forproduction, biomasses, predation and abiotic/biotic interactions of nine keyfunctional groups of organisms: phytoplankton, bacterioplankton, two types ofzooplankton (herbivorous and predatory), two types of fish (prey and predatory),zoobenthos, macrophytes and benthic algae. The model uses ordinary differentialequations, the ecosystem scale and gives seasonal variations (the calculationtime is 1 week). It is designed to account for all fundamental abiotic/bioticinteractions and feedbacks for lakes in general for the nine target groups. TheLakeWeb-model has been calibrated and critically tested using empirical data andregressions based on data from many lakes. It has been shown that the model canclosely capture typical functional and structural patterns in lakes, whichshould give credibility to the results presented in this work. Obtaining suchresults using traditional methods, i.e., extensive field studies in one or a fewlakes, would be very demanding (in terms of money, persons involved and time).In this paper, results are presented for two lakes, one Swedish and oneBelarussian. The intensive fishing operations carried out in LakeBlacksåstjärn, Sweden, to reduce Hg-concentrations in fish did notsucceed. A typical cost of an intensive fishing is about 10,000–30,000 USDper lake of this size ( 0.25 km2). The costs toremove fish would be about 40–120 USD per kg ww fish removed! Intensivefishing simulated for Lake Batorino, Belarus, to reduce the fish biomass willlikely increase the prey fish biomass as long as the predation pressure on preyfish is lower than during the prefishing stage. The biomass of predatory fishwill recover only slowly. However, this operation is not likely to succeed inlowering the algal volume in lakes with a high biomass of predatory zooplankton.This is easy to state qualitatively and the LakeWeb-model offers a practicallyuseful tool to quantify such changes and identify lakes where biomanipulationsare likely to fail or succeed.  相似文献

Malus domestica, Salix caprea L. and Betula pubescens Ehrh. are host plants for Orthosia gothica L. The influence of the three plant species on time of larval development, mortality, and weight gain, and of adult fecundity, was studied. M. domestica was the most suitable food plant for the O. gothica larvae, and there was a positive correlation between the live weights of the females and their fecundity. The consumption, digestion and respiration of O. gothica larvae reared on foliage of S. caprea and B. pubescens were compared. Larvae fed on S. caprea had a shorter time of development, a higher weight gain, and a lower mortality, consumption, digestion and respiration compared with larvae reared on B. pubescens . Larvae reared on B. pubescens used a greater part of metabolism for maintenance than those on S. caprea . The different effects of the two food plants on the larvae were due to nutritional and/or physical conditions.  相似文献

When two neighboring host plants did not touch with each other and the dispersal of the predators was possible only through a 20cm plywood “bridge” which connected the two plants, the rate of successful dispersal of the predators was only 20 to 25%, whereas it was 95% when the plants touched with each other.
  3. In the system where 32 host plants touched with each other, the predators succeeded in immigrating into all the plants by the 16th day, and they completely eliminated all the prey by the 33rd day.
  4. In another system, the 32 plants were equally divided into eight “patches” which were connected with each other with two of the bridges and the predators could move between them only through the bridges as mentioned above. In such a system the predators and their prey coexisted about three times longer than in the other one.
  5. It is suggested that for a longer continued coexistence of the predators and prey, it would be necessary to introduce more physical barrier against the dispersal of the predators and to provide more chances for the prey to disperse.

Summary Relative abundance of natural food resource, leaves of wild rose, ofArge migrinodosa was evaluated by comparing the food quantity which the larvae composing a colony utilized throughout the larval stage with that which is available in the habitat. In this connection, behavioral pattern of larval feeding was also observed under natural conditions, and its ecological significance was discussed. It was quantitatively clarified that the larvae faced the severe shortage of food and had to disperse to other shoots with the expense of probably high risk. Under pressures of such insufficient supply of food, the larvae follow the most efficient pattern of feeding behavior that they move to the tip of shoot at first and feed regularly downward thereafter. Though individual larvae behaved completely independently of each other, the aggregation appeared to be formed and maintained because all the larvae from the same egg mass follow this fixed feeding pattern.  相似文献

Suspension-feeders are discriminate feeders, selecting prey by size, shape and food quality, this discriminate feeding behaviour has important consequences for the modelling of growth rates, population dynamics and ecosystem change. When given natural seston, the large pinnid bivalve Atrina zelandica (Gray), fed on picophytoplankton (< 2 μm), larger phytoplankton (2-270 μm) and microzooplankton, but preferentially selected algal species within the 2-20 μm size fraction. Selection for ingestion was based on food quality, with morphotype, carbon content and potential toxicity also being important. Microzooplankton were readily ingested and represented 48% of the available diet in terms of carbon indicating they play an important role in the diet of Atrina. Mussels were subsequently fed a selected cultured algal diet consisting of three different types of 2-20 μm sized phytoplankton to assess differences in prey selection and grazing efficiency. When high inorganic suspended sediment concentrations of 500 mg/l were added in addition to the cultured algal diet this caused Atrina to increase filtration and rejection rates and reduced the efficiency of Atrina to select food in all cases. More importantly, there were changes in the species preferentially selected for ingestion. Our results suggest that as well as reducing feeding efficiency increased suspended sediment concentrations may affect prey selection and therefore have consequences for benthic-pelagic coupling beyond that of reduced removal and deposition rates.  相似文献
