Megagametogenesis, the development of a megaspore into an embryo sac, has been identified in the seagrass Halophila johnsonii, a threatened species with no known sexual reproduction or seeds. Megagametogenesis in H. johnsonii was compared with megagametophyte development in Halophila decipiens, a related species known to readily produce viable seeds. In both species, ovules were structurally similar, megaspore mother cells were seen in premeiotic ovules, and linear tetrads and megagametophytes with two to eight nuclei were present in postmeiotic ovules. However, H. decipiens postmeiotic ovules had a chalazal pouch that was absent in the postmeiotic ovules of H. johnsonii. Late-stage H. decipiens ovules also contained embryos, indicating that they had been fertilized, whereas all late-stage H. johnsonii ovules were degrading and showed no signs of fertilization. These observations suggest that meiosis does occur in H. johnsonii megasporocytes, leading to the formation of viable megagametophytes and egg cells that could be fertilized if pollination occurred. Thus, the lack of seed set is due to a lack of pollination rather than any loss of capacity to produce seeds in this species.  相似文献

Three techniques of the test-tube fertilization by means of an artificial pollen tube culture are described. The essentials for each individual method are:
  1. Transfer of pollen tubes from the sugar solution onto the placentae in the test tube.
  2. Placing the placentae with ovules onto pollen tube culture.
  3. Precultivation of pollen tubes on small cellophane squares placed on the surface of a semi-liquid medium and transfer of cellophane squares along with the pollen culture to the solid medium, over which finally the placentae with ovules are placed.
By means of all the three techniques viable seeds were obtained in vitro. In an artificial medium pollen tubes are able to maintain their fertilizing ability even after the 24 hours cultivation, i.e. at the time after the formation of the gametes.  相似文献

Production of alternariol, alternariol mono-methylether and tenuazonic acid byAlternaría alternata was studied in competition withAspergillus parasiticus andBacillus subtilis on irradiated sunflower seeds at 0.90 aw. In cultures co-inoculated withAlternaría alternata andAspergillus parasiticus alternariol production decreased by 64%. Soil fusaria from various areas in and around Surrey were estimated on medium selective forFusarium. 4 species ofFusarium, F. episphaeria. F. oxysporum, F. roseum andF. solani were detected.F. roseum was the most widely distributed species and present in highest numbers. Among 3 cultivars of this species obtained, non-pathogenic clones of “Culmorum” was always present. The other 3 species ofFusarium were less widely distributed and occurred in lower numbers, withF. solani being the most restricted in distribution and present in very small populations. NoFusarium was recorded for soils from natural field vegetation (except grass areas) and forests.  相似文献

In this work, we study the capacity to biosynthesize gibberellins (GA) of ovules (either fertilised or unfertilised), developing seeds and pericarp from fruitlets and their relation with fruit set capacity. Experiments were performed in adult, 12-year-old trees of seeded (Pineapple) and seedless parthenocarpic (Washington navel) sweet orange [Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck] cultivars. The activity of GA20-, GA3- and GA2-oxidases and gibberellin levels were measured in the ovules and pericarp of fruitlets in different development states. The results indicate that ovules are the main sites of gibberellin synthesis in fruitlets during the post-anthesis period. The most intense GA1 synthesis—coincident with the highest expression of GA20ox2, GA3ox1 and GA2ox1—was detected in the ovules of the seeded cultivar, probably induced by fecundation and associated with low early fruitlet abscission rates. By contrast, the low activity detected in the sterile cultivar appears to be rather developmentally or constitutively regulated. As a fruitlet develops, the GA1 concentration is augmented in the pericarp in comparison to ovules or developing seeds, and levels therein did not exhibit noticeable differences between varieties. Furthermore, developing seeds from pineapple had higher GA1 content than the unfertilised abortive ovules from Washington navel. Taken together, data suggest a main role for this hormone in the control of fruitlet abscission, and also demonstrate a function in seed development.  相似文献

A representative survey was made of maize ears of the 1988 and 1989 crop in Austria to establish the influence of corn borer injuries onFusarium species involved in ear fusariosis andFusarium toxin production.TheFusarium species most frequently isolated from rot-damaged ears wereFsacchari var. subglutinans (about 50 %) andF. graminearum (about 30 %). There was a striking difference between theFusarium species of the Liseola and the Discolor section concerning their occurrence on corn borer-damaged ears. More than 80 % of the ears infected withF. sacchari var. subglutinans andF. verticillioides, but less than 15 % of the ears infected withF. graminearum, F. crookwellense andF. culmorum showed corn borer injuries.Toxin analyses of the infected ears corresponded to the known toxigenicity of the respectiveFusarium species. Ears infected withF. sacchari var. subglutinans contained moniliformin (up to 20 mg/kg), those infected withF. verticillioides fumonisin B1 and B2 (up to 15 mg/kg). In ears infected withF. graminearum, F. culmorum andF. crookwellense zearalenone (up to 40 mg/kg) and deoxynivalenol (up to 500 mg/kg) or nivalenol (up to 10 mg/kg), respectively, could be detected. Hence measures to combat the European corn borer will mainly reduce moniliformin and fumonisin contamination, but will affect zearalenone, deoxynivalenol and nivalenol contents of the ears to a much lesser extent.  相似文献

A study was made on certain problems connected with the application of methods of stigmatal and placental pollinationin vitro in the snapdragon. Germinable pollen without microbial contamination could be obtained only from the flowers which were left, after surface sterilization, on the stem till the dehiscence of anthers. The germination of pollen, and especially the growth of pollen tubes was better in a 0.3 M lactose solution with 10?3 per cent H3BO3 than in usual sucrose media. The seedsin vitro could be obtained only after normal pollination and the successive artificial cultivation of the entire pistil (the method of stigmatal pollinationin vitro). The seeds did not differ either in their morphology or in their size from those developed under natural conditions, they were viable and without dormancy. Though the pollinated pistils were cultivated in the medium without growth substances, callus formation from uncovered ovules and placenta was observed in some cases. A dependence was revealed of the proliferation on pollination and on the cultivar employed. When using the method of placental pollinationin vitro we failed to obtain seeds. The main difficulty in the use of this method seems to consist in the fact that pollen tubes are not capable of growing from the surface of ovules and placenta into the micropyle.  相似文献

The genera of theRafflesiaceae show a marked diversity in the structure of their ovules and seeds. Evolutionary trends are recognizable in ovule orientation and number of integuments. A change from anatropous ovules inApodantheae andMitrastemoideae towards incomplete anatropy inRafflesieae and orthotropy inCytineae occurs, next to a change from bitegmic ovules inApodantheae towards unitegmy with rudimentary outer integuments inRafflesieae andCytineae and full unitegmy inMitrastemoideae.—The differences in ovule structure are clearly reflected in the seeds. The seeds are essentially exotegmic, have very small embryos and an oily endosperm.—Seed structure strongly confirms the existing subfamilial classification and supports additional arguments for the generic status ofApodanthes. It does not support a separate status of the genusBerlinianche. InRafflesiaceae, seed micromorphology is only of limited use at the species level. As far as known seed dispersal is endo- or exozoochorous in all genera.  相似文献

American trilliums are all diploid and are classified into three groups with regard to compatibility withTrillium kamtschaticum, a single diploid Asian species: (1) Compatible pedicellate-flowered species, i.e.T. erectum, T. gleasoni, andT. vaseyi. (2) Incompatible pedicellate-flowered species, i.e.T. grandiflorum. (3) Incompatible sessile-flowered species, i.e.T. decunbens, T. luteum, T. sessile andT. stamineum. HybridsT. kamtschaticum×T. erectum flowered for the first time 9–10 years after sowing F1 seeds. The F1 were completely sterile in pollen and in seed-setting.  相似文献

Energy content of tissue produced in male and female reproductive structures as well as in associated flower parts of Amaryllis was measured with an oxygen bomb calorimeter. In typical flowers, 6.6% of their total energy (2,880 cal) was in pollen, 4.9% in anther walls, 4.6% in ovules and placentae, and 12.6% in ovary walls and septa. Ovules were estimated to contain only about one-third as much energy as pollen. Mature seeds typically contained about 100 times as much energy as ovules. Total energy in mature seeds per flower was approximately equal to total energy in flower tissues. Proportional allocation of anther energy to pollen increased with anther size. The biological significance of these results is discussed.  相似文献

Fifteen species of Heterostropha are described, 12 of them for the first time. All are newly interpreted with regard to their taxonomic relation to fossil and living gastropods. The Streptacidoidea with long Paleozoic history are represented in the Late Triassic St. Cassian Formation by several genera that can be differentiated into four families. The Ebalidae are represented byEbala, with smooth protoconch, Cassianebalidae byCassianebala andLoxebala with axially ornamented protoconch. The Donaldinidae of St. Cassian are represented by one species ofDonaldina and two ofNeodonaldina that stand in the continuation of Paleozoic species ofDonaldina. Architectonicoidea with shells coiled in a plane and Valvatoidea appear in the St. Cassian fauna without known Paleozoic relation. In the former superfamily the Architectonicidae can be recognized in the genusRinaldoconchus with two species. Cassianaxidae withCassianaxis, Amphitomariidae withAmphitomaria, Stuoraxidae withStuoraxis andAmpezzogyra have a sinistral protoconch and planispirally coiled dextral teleconchs. They all resemble different modern species that have similarly small shells. Modern Hyalogyrinidae have withAlexogyra a new representative from the Triassic. The Valvatoidea are represented with the generaCarboninia andBandellina of the Cornirostridae in the Triassic representatives. The relation of described species in the system of the Heterostropha is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Only one ovule matures into a seed inMelilotus officinalis. Although eight ovules form within an ovary, only the basal ovule develops into a mature seed, whereas the other ovules degenerate. The investigation of ovule and seed structure at different developmental stages and a comparison of quantitative characters of differently fated ovules within an ovary were undertaken by light, phase contrast, and fluorescence microscopy. In this species, campylotropous ovules develop simultaneously on marginal placentae in an apocarpous unilocular gynoecium. Megasporo- and megagametogenesis proceed normally and are completed in bud. The maturation of the Polygonum type embryo sac takes place after the flower opens. Shortly before fertilization, synergids show signs of degeneration in all ovules. At this stage, neither the structure nor the sizes of ovules within one ovary differ significantly. In spite of this, only the basal ovule develops into a seed. Rarely, one of the upper-situated ovules or the basal and another ovule mature into seeds. Seed enlargement is insignificant until the stage when globular embryo and nuclear endosperm are formed. At the seed-filling stage, other ovules have collapsed and the seed gradually comes to occupy the total volume of the pod. The fruit-to-seed length ratio decreases considerably during seed ripening. At fertilization, ovary length is four times greater than ovule length. In the mature state, the fruit and seed lengths are approximately equal. Seed size and weight diminish with an increase in seed number within a pod, although pod size remains constant. It is assumed that nonrandom abortion of young seeds inM. officinalis is under maternal control and is not related to structural abnormalities in ovule development or with limitation in pollen. We suppose that evolution of this species may have proceeded in the direction of a decrease in seed number and an increase in its sizes, which may play an important role in seed dispersal and seedling establishment.  相似文献

The present paper deals with the air fungi of a paddy field. The investigation was carried on from August '67 to November '67. The fungal flora continuously increased from August to November. The dominant and subdominant species differed from month to month and sometimes even at different sampling periods.Aspergilli andHelminthosporium were dominant withCurvularia andFusaria as subdominant in earlier part of the investigation. Trichogramma cordubensis n. sp. is a parasite ofHeliothis armigera Hb. eggs in cotton crops in western Andalusia. Reproduced onEphestia kuehniella Zeller eggs, it is described morphologically and compared withT. chilonis Ishii andT. evanescens Westwood as both present similarities with this species.T. cordubensis can be distinguished in the male genitalia by the shape of the dorsal expansion of the gonobase and the size, shape and relative position of the median ventral projection. Male antennal setae are longer inT. cordubensis than in the other 2 species. In addition, unlikeT. chilonis andT. evanescens, T. cordubensis is thelytokous at 20°C. in our laboratory, though males and gynandromorphs can be obtained by altering the rearing temperature, this being another difference of this species.  相似文献

In the Japanese species ofTrillium examined here, every interspecific cross produced healthy F1 progeny at the rate of about 50 to 60 per cent of the total inborn ovules except forT. hagae. These figures were not appreciably different from those of self-pollinated or sib-mated examples of these species.Trillium hagae, a putative natural hybrid betweenT. kamtschaticum (2n=10) andT. tschonoskii (2n=20), accepted all foreign sources of pollen grains in manual pollination. These and other crossing experiments suggest that no appreciable barrier has developed that might cause interspecific crossability and that they are habitual inbreeders. Despite theri crossability, a very low rate of actual pollen flow was detected by examining electrophoretic phenotypes of seeds taken from sympatric populations of these species.  相似文献

Microscopic observations of R. bicolor ovules showed that tetrasporic embryo sacs of Fritillaria type are formed. In the mature female gametophytes modifications in antipodal cell formation and egg apparatus organization were observed, e.g. morphological resemblance was evident of antipode or synergid to the egg cell. In the central cell cytoplasm of the mature gametophytes the presence of small bodies was a characteristic feature. Development of both embryo and endosperm was observed in ∼73% of ovules at the embryo stage, while retarded or arrested development of the endosperm was found in ∼26% of them. Occasionally, two embryos occurred in the embryo sac. This is the first record of polyembryony in this species. Although hemigamy has been previously described in Rudbeckia bicolor Nutt., in the present investigations mosaic structure of embryos was not detected. Measurements of the C-DNA amount (flow cytometry) revealed embryo nuclei with 2C DNA content only, and endosperm nuclei with 5C DNA content in the mature seeds. No peak corresponding to 1C nuclei was detected in the histograms obtained from the nuclear preparation of seeds or seedling parts. These results suggest that hemigamy is not an obligatory phenomenon in R. bicolor. The mean 2C DNA value was determined as 14.51 pg (the first estimation for this species).  相似文献

Handroanthus chrysotrichus shows pollination-dependent self-fertility, polyploidy, and adventitious polyembryony, and it is closely related to H. ochraceus, for which apparently conflicting reports of self-incompatibility and apomixis have been published. The present study aims to investigate the polyembryony in these species by means of histological analysis of ovule/seed development in unpollinated, selfed, and crossed pistils/fruits (in H. chrysotrichus only) as well as seed germination experiments. Experimental pollinations were carried out to evaluate breeding systems in the studied populations, and the results indicated self-fertility in both species. Adventitious embryo precursor cells (AEPs) were formed in the ovules of unpollinated, selfed, and crossed pistils. However, unfertilized ovules never develop into seeds, and fertilization/endosperm initiation clearly stimulates the formation of AEPs in pollinated pistils. The inability of AEP-bearing unfertilized ovules to initiate endospermogenesis clearly shows that fertilization is needed for adventitious embryo development. Consequently, formation of AEPs is required but is not sufficient for apomictic reproduction in H. chrysotrichus. Analysis of the positions of multiple embryos in the endosperm indicated that fertilized ovules are able to develop into seeds even in the absence of a zygotic embryo. The development of AEPs in ovules of H. chrysotrichus foregoes the stage in which activation of selfed pistil rejection takes place in H. impetiginosus, a species with late-acting self-incompatibility. Our study supports the hypothesis that the self-fertility in H. chrysotrichus (and perhaps also in H. ochraceus) resulted from the emergence of pseudogamous apomixis, favored by the physiological peculiarities of the late-acting self-incompatibility and possibly related to polyploidy.  相似文献

Surface-sterilized ovules and seeds of 27 species of plants were cultured in the water of syneresis of a nutrient medium low in agar content. Bacteria were obtained from 30% of the ovules, 15% of the seeds of herbaceous plants, 16% of the seeds of woody plants, 5.4% of the overwintered noncereal seeds, and 13.5% of overwintered cereal seeds. In no instance did every ovule or seed of a plant species contain bacteria. No bacteria were obtained from the hard, waxy seeds of mimosa or yellowwood. They were not obtained from ovules with unbroken coats or from seeds with coats that were not ruptured during the swelling of the seed. Only one species of bacteria was recovered in 93% of the instances in which bacteria were obtained. Bacteria were obtained from seeds that were embedded in the acidic parenchyma of the lemon or surrounded by the thickened flesh of the cucurbits. The bacteria were distributed among 19 genera and 46 species. The species isolated in greatest numbers were Bacillus megaterium, B. cereus, Erwinia herbicola, Flavobacterium devorans, and Pseudomonas fluorescens. Bacteria recovered less frequently were in the genera Achromobacter, Acinetobacter, Alcaligenes, Brevibacterium, Corynebacterium, Cytophaga, Leuconostoc, Micrococcus, Nocardia, Proteus, Streptococcus, Streptomyces, and Xanthomonas. Members of 11 genera and 15 species of bacteria were isolated once.  相似文献

Papaver nudicaule placentae with attached ovules were dissected out of unpollinated gynoecia 1–3 days after anthesis, dusted with pollen, and cultured on modified Nitsch's growth medium at 23 C. Ovules were removed from expiants at 15, 24, 31, and 48 hr postpollination, fixed in GA-OsO4, embedded in Spurr's resin and sectioned (1.0 μm) for light microscopy. Placentae, 15 hr after pollination, were fixed and processed for scanning electron microscopy. Pollen germinates within 1 hr. Although most pollen tube growth appears random, there is directional growth toward the micropyle. The crassinucellate ovule contains an embryo sac consisting of three antipodals, two polar nuclei, and an egg apparatus composed of two synergids and a polarized egg having a large chalazal vacuole and micropylar nucleus. Pollen tube access into the megagametophyte is through a degenerate synergid, with fertilization occurring between 24 and 31 hr after pollination. Zygote establishment is accompanied by polarity reversal in which the nucleus assumes the chalazal position subtended by a large micropylar vacuole. Fertilized ovules normally develop into germinable seeds.  相似文献

Forty-four chromosome counts from the North American genusCallirhoe are reported, including first-recorded counts ofC. alcaeoides, C. digitata, C. bushii, C. triangulata, andC. involucrata var.tenuissima. Information concerning chromosome numbers from present and previous reports is summarized and evaluated. Observations are presented on meiosis for the genus in general, for male sterile individuals of gynodioecious species, and for selected F1 hybrids. Pollen fertility data are recorded for the latter. Chromosomally three species groups are recognized: an exinvolucellate, diploid species group withn=14; an involucellate, tetraploid and octoploid species pair,n=28 and 56; and an involucellate, diploid and tetraploid species group withn=15 and 30. Intrageneric relationships and those within the tribe Malveae subtribe Malvinae are discussed.  相似文献
