Brain lateralization is a common term used to describe dominance of one brain hemisphere over another for a specific function. The right hand dominance in writing, controlled by the left hemisphere, is preceded by development of communicative gesticulation and followed by development of speech in the same hemisphere. We assumed that some people are not aware of their own capability of using the other hand for tasks involving fine motor sequential movements. To prove this hypothesis, the participants were asked to perform one trained task (writing) and one less-trained task (drawing) with a dominant and a non-dominant hand. The final sample was comprised of 1189 children from 14 elementary schools and 8 high schools in the Osijek area, of which 685 elementary school children were attending 1st to 4th grade and 504 high school children were attending 3rd and 4th grade. The participants were asked to write two words, draw a specific object (a vase with flowers) and fill out a questionnaire with 10 questions concerning the classification of handedness and cerebral hemisphere dominance. The self-reported cerebral lateralization assessed in the questionnaire was compared with the drawing and the writing performance. The self-reported and objectively measured hand dominance deviated in the cases of the ambidextrous who consider themselves right-handers. Given the fact that the number of ambidextrous persons was greater in elementary schools than in high schools, we concluded how training of the right hand decreases the ability of using both hands equally for either of the tested functions - writing and drawing.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES--To identify children with afebrile seizures in a national cohort, classify the seizures, and document progress in the first 10 years of life. DESIGN--Population based birth cohort study. SETTING--The child health and education study, which includes 16,004 neonatal survivors (98.5% of infants born in the United Kingdom during one week of April 1970). SUBJECTS--14,676 children for whom relevant information was available. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Responses to parental and general practitioner questionnaires and hospital records at 5 and 10 years after birth. RESULTS--84 children (42 boys, 42 girls) had had one or more afebrile seizure (incidence 5.7/1000). 63 children (31 boys, 32 girls) had epilepsy (incidence 4.3/1000). 49 of 55 children had a second seizure within a year of the first. The commonest seizure types were tonic-clonic (42) and complex partial (25). A greater proportion of children with complex partial seizures had recurrences. Children who had infantile spasms or a mixed seizure disorder had a poor outcome. All six children who died had symptomatic seizures in the first year, but seizures were not the direct cause of death. CONCLUSIONS--The results of this study are probably representative of seizure patterns in the general population. Outcome after seizures is determined more by the underlying disease than by the seizures themselves.  相似文献

Motor lateralization in humans has primarily been characterized as “handedness”, resulting in the view that one arm-hemisphere system is specialized for all aspects of movement while the other is simply a weaker analogue. We have proposed an alternative view that motor lateralization reflects proficiency of each arm for complementary functions that arises from a specialization of each hemisphere for distinct movement control mechanisms. However, before this idea of hemispheric specialization can be accepted, it is necessary to precisely identify these distinct, lateralized mechanisms. Here we show in right-handers that dominant arm movements rely on predictive mechanisms that anticipate and account for the dynamic properties of the arm, while the non-dominant arm optimizes positional stability by specifying impedance around equilibrium positions. In a targeted-reaching paradigm, we covertly and occasionally shifted the hand starting location either orthogonal to or collinear with a particular direction of movement. On trials on which the start positions were shifted orthogonally, we did not notice any strong interlimb differences. However, on trials on which start positions were shifted orthogonally, the dominant arm largely maintained the direction and straightness of its trajectory, while the non-dominant arm deviated towards the previously learned goal position, consistent with the hypothesized control specialization of each arm-hemisphere system. These results bring together two competing theories about mechanisms of movement control, and suggest that they coexist in the brain in different hemispheres. These findings also question the traditional view of handedness, because specialized mechanisms for each arm-hemisphere system were identified within a group of right-handers. It is likely that such hemispheric specialization emerged to accommodate increasing motor complexity during evolution.  相似文献

Acute and long-term sequels of central nervous system (CNS) prophylaxis with irradiation and intrathecal chemotherapy in children suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) include vasculopathies, leucoencephalopathies, intracranial calcifications, intellectual and neurological impairment. We report two children at the age 5 and 8 years who manifested partial motor or complex seizures and intracranial calcifications 2-4 years after the diagnosis of ALL had been established. The occurrence of these disorders was much earlier than reported in the literature. Both children received prophylactic CNS treatment with irradiation and intrathecal methotrexate (MTX). Their brain CT scans and EEG had been normal before the first epileptic seizure was registered. Children are now seizure free on carbamazepine, and a boy with complex partial and myoclonic seizures is also on valproate and vigabatrine. Symptomatic epilepsy associated with intracranial calcifications and persisting EEG changes might occur as side effects of ALL treatment.  相似文献

Cerebral mechanisms of musical abilities were explored in musically gifted children. For this purpose, psychophysiological characteristics of perception of emotional speech information were experimentally studied in samples of gifted and ordinary children. Forty six schoolchildren and forty eight musicians of three age groups (7-10, 11-13 and 14-17 years old) participated in the study. In experimental session, a test sentence was presented to a subject through headphones with two emotional intonations (joy and anger) and without emotional expression. A subject had to recognize the type of emotion. His/her answers were recorded. The analysis of variance revealed age- and gender-related features of emotional recognition: boys musicians led the schoolchildren of the same age by 4-6 years in the development of mechanisms of emotional recognition, whereas girls musicians were 1-3 years ahead. Musical education in girls induced the shift of predominant activities for emotional perception in the left hemisphere; in boys, on the contrary, initial distinct dominance of the left hemisphere was not retained in the process of further education.  相似文献

51 children with localized cerebral lesions were investigated with the British Ability Scales, Wechsler test, Porteus Mazes, Conners Teacher Rating Scale, and computerized tomography. The extent of the lesions was quantitatively determined. The IQ was 10 points lower in the left hemispheric lesions, although the right hemispheric lesions were larger. When corrected for size of lesions, the IQ is 17 points higher (p less than 0.05) in children with right than with left hemispheric early lesions. The children with left hemispheric lesions had also significantly more behavioural problems (Conners Scale). Children with bilateral lesions had 15 points lower IQ than those with unilateral lesions, although from the slightly larger extent one could expect only 3 points difference. There was no influence of hemiparesis or of epilepsy of the IQ independent of the extent of lesion. There was more plasticity of the hemisphere than of the lobes as shown by Wisconsin Card Sorting data. The higher density of mental capacities in the left cerebral hemisphere of man is explained by more efficient programs, and more dense packing of functions due to more training of the left cerebral hemisphere.  相似文献

Because of its preferential neuroexcitatory effects on the hippocampal neurones kainic acid (KA) is used for inducing partial seizures with a complex symptomatology. In this study the authors investigated the effect of intraperitoneal administration of KA, in doses of 2-16 mg/kg, on the laboratory rat during ontogenesis. The experimental animals were males aged 7, 12, 18, 25 and 90 days. The first signs of an effect in adult rats were automatisms; in young animals, jerks also appeared. The most important automatisms were wet dog shakes, which preponderated in 25-day-old and older animals, whereas in the young rats they consisted chiefly of intensive scratching. Minimal seizures with a motor pattern identical to minimal metrazol seizures were observed in all the age groups and so were generalized tonic-clonic convulsions, which appeared after large doses of KA. The systemic administration of KA is a convenient model of temporal seizures and their progressive generalization and could act as a model for testing broad spectrum antiepileptics.  相似文献

Floor dust collected from classrooms of thirty three elementary schools (16 for girls, and 17 for boys) (children aged 6–11), and twenty four preparatory schools (13 for girls, and 11 for boys) (children aged 12–14) was studied for the occurrence of keratinophilic fungi with respect to human presence and age of children. Tichophyton mentagrophytes was present in 15.4% of the preparatory schools for girls, in 12.5% of elementary schools for girls, and in 11.8% of elementary schools for boys. It was not found in preparatory schools for boys. Microsporum gypseum was found in preparatory schools for girls only (7.7%). Trichophyton terrestre was also only isolated from elementary schools for boys (5.9%). Chrysosporium species were present in 30.3% of all elementary schools (10 schools/33), and in 20.8% of all preparatory schools (5 schools/24). Geotrichum candidum was the most frequent and predominant keratinophilic species in all schools. Pathogenic and potentially pathogenic keratinophilic fungi comprised a large proportion of all fungal isolates recovered from all schools ; they comprised 87.2 %–89.5 % of all fungal isolates in the elementary schools, and 90.4%–93.5% of all fungal isolates in preparatory schools.  相似文献

The hemodynamic (magnetic resonance imaging, fMRI, 3T) brain responses were studied in 15 left-handed healthy subjects performing active and passive movements of the dominant and non-dominant hands. Group and individual fMRI responses to the motor load were analyzed. It was found that, during the active movements of dominant and non-dominant hands, the main activation cluster appeared in the preand postcentral gyrus of the contralateral hemisphere and which topographically similar during active and passive movements. The activation cluster of greater volume was identified in these areas; the response was more diffused during the non-dominant hand movements in comparison with the dominant hand. During passive movements, the cortical activation clusters of a smaller volume in comparison with the active movements were found, which was expressed most clearly during the performance of non-dominant hand movements and could reflect the weakening of the control from the cortical structures in these conditions.  相似文献

Functional interhemispheric asymmetry was investigated by evoked potentials method in experiments on ten cats under ethaminal anaesthesia at 200 points of the visual cortex during the action of binocular and monocular photic flashes of submaximal intensity. Topographic maps have been plotted of the functional interhemispheric asymmetry. In most of the animals a hemisphere dominant and non-dominant at the given moment can be singled out. Section of the callosal body leads to reduction of the functional interhemispheric asymmetry due to a decrease of the focus of maximum activity in the dominant hemisphere and its increase in the non-dominant one. A mozaic pattern of functional interhemispheric asymmetry has been demonstrated, as expressed in the existence of zones of inverse dominance along with prevailing zones of direct dominance. Section of the callosal body produced a decrease in the area of direct dominance and an increase in that of inverse dominance. Absolute interhemispheric asymmetry was most pronounced in the central part of the visual cortex (field 18 and its medial boundary) and the relative one, on the periphery of the visual area (fields 17 and 19).  相似文献

The acquisition of new motor skills is essential throughout daily life and involves the processes of learning new motor sequence and encoding elementary aspects of new movement. Although previous animal studies have suggested a functional importance for striatal dopamine release in the learning of new motor sequence, its role in encoding elementary aspects of new movement has not yet been investigated. To elucidate this, we investigated changes in striatal dopamine levels during initial skill-training (Day 1) compared with acquired conditions (Day 2) using (11)C-raclopride positron-emission tomography. Ten volunteers learned to perform brisk contractions using their non-dominant left thumbs with the aid of visual feedback. On Day 1, the mean acceleration of each session was improved through repeated training sessions until performance neared asymptotic levels, while improved motor performance was retained from the beginning on Day 2. The (11)C-raclopride binding potential (BP) in the right putamen was reduced during initial skill-training compared with under acquired conditions. Moreover, voxel-wise analysis revealed that (11)C-raclopride BP was particularly reduced in the right antero-dorsal to the lateral part of the putamen. Based on findings from previous fMRI studies that show a gradual shift of activation within the striatum during the initial processing of motor learning, striatal dopamine may play a role in the dynamic cortico-striatal activation during encoding of new motor memory in skill acquisition.  相似文献

The effect of gonadectomy and sex-steroid hormones treatment on functional interhemispheric asymmetry to the reaction of pain cry avoidance of another species (emotional reactions) and motor and exploratory activity of open-field behavior in Wistar rats of 3 months old has been investigated. A spreading depression technique for hemisphere inactivation has been used. The hemispheric asymmetry of the reactions in intact rats was characterized by sex dimorphism; the left hemisphere dominated to a great extent in males than in females under the control of emotional reactions; in motor and exploratory activity in open-field behavior of rats the left hemisphere dominated in males and the right one--in female. In both sexes the neonatal gonadectomy levelled the interhemispheric differences in reactions under investigation. The following treatment of females with estradiol and males with testosterone didn't restore the asymmetry. After the castration at the age of 3 months the correlation between the size and direction of interhemispheric differences became reverse. The treatment of females with testosterone and males with estradiol both castrated in adulthood restored the interhemispheric asymmetry in males and had no effect in females. The treatment of intact rats with hormones of opposite sex led to the enhancement of left hemisphere dominance in motor and exploratory activity in males and levelled the asymmetry in females. It has been shown that in adult rats sex-steroids effect predominantly the right hemisphere.  相似文献

There are current attempts to replace the WADA test for pre-surgical evaluation of hemispheric language capabilities by one of the methods of functional brain imaging. Recent PET and fMRI studies using verbal cognitive tasks like verb generation, semantic monitoring or semantic (`deep') encoding of words showed asymmetries of activation in the fronto-lateral cortex. In a previous ERP study subjects were required to indicate whether pronounceable non-words and abstract geometric figures were presented for the first time (`new item') or whether they had been shown before (`old item'). Group analyses of this study showed significant material-specific hemispheric asymmetries with ERPs being more negative-going in recordings of the posterior part of the left hemisphere with verbal material (CP5/6) but more negative-going in recordings of the right hemisphere with the spatial material (P7/8). The aim of the present study was to test statistically ERP lateralization effects in individual healthy subjects as well as WADA-tested patients suffering from seizures of the mesio-temporal lobe (MTL). In all subjects ERP lateralization with verbal material was tested in the electrode pair CP5/6, and ERP lateralization with figures in the electrode pair P7/8. Statistical analyses of single trials showed that in 20 out of 24 subjects ERPs with verbal material started to be more negative-going in CP5 as compared to CP6 in the period between 100 and 200 ms after stimulus onset or the subsequent time epoch (200–300 ms). In one subject not CP5/6 but the closely adjacent electrode pair P7/P8 showed this verbal material-related hemispheric effect. In patients language dominance as indicated by ERPs was not always consistent with the data of the WADA test. In one patient with left MTL seizures ERPs with verbal material and figures were found to be significantly lateralized to the right hemisphere although the WADA test assigned this patient to have a language-dominant left hemisphere.  相似文献

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is used already for sixteen years for studying human central nervous system. The main objective of this work was to study motor thresholds and their hemispheric asymmetry in healthy subjects during TMS. We examined 31 righthanded healthy students. Their motor thresholds were measured in May (before vacations), September (immediately after vacations), and November (two months after vacations). Magnetic stimulator Neurosoft-MS (Ivanovo, Russia) was used for TNS of the motor cortex. It was shown that in the absence of regular active functional loads on the right hand, the motor thresholds in healthy righthanders significantly increased under the TMS of the left hemisphere, and hemispheric asymmetry disappeared under conditions both of muscle relaxation and voluntary contraction. Motor thresholds under the left-side TMS decreased and hemispheric asymmetry recovered with the restart of the regular active functional loads on the right hand.  相似文献

Trees are important to the environment owing to their ecological services. However, many aspects of their form and function are poorly understood by the public. From their earliest years, children have an elementary knowledge about plants which they gain from their everyday observations, their parents and other people and from their kindergarten and primary schooling. The goal of this research was to investigate Polish children’s understanding of trees’ internal structure. This cross-age study involved 5-year-old children from kindergarten (n = 57, 26 boys and 31 girls) and 7-year-old children (n = 105, 57 boys and 48 girls) and 10-year-old children (83 children, 36 boys and 47 girls) from primary school. Participants were asked to draw the internal structure of a tree. The results of the study showed that there were some significant differences in the responses between age groups and between the genders. Nevertheless, there were some ideas that were shared among all age groups indicating that they might be resistant to change. The study also identified some alternative conceptions about the internal structure of plants and the influence of the media on children’s ideas.  相似文献

The anticonvulsant activity of nitrazepam (Mogadon) was studied in 31 children with various seizure patterns. Dosage ranged from 0.3 to 2.2 mg. per kg. body weight daily.Eleven of 15 children with minor motor seizures showed improvement and six obtained complete relief. Nine of 16 with miscellaneous seizures were improved, but only one was completely relieved and the other eight responded to a variable extent. In cases with more than one type of seizure, the myoclonic elements were those most often diminished, but sometimes this effect was only temporary. Side effects were transient and usually mild, consisting of drowsiness, ataxia, slurred speech and excessive secretion of mucus and saliva. However, three cases of aspiration pneumonia were encountered and may have been at least partly due to the side effects. No hematological or biochemical abnormalities were observed.The results indicate that nitrazepam is a relatively safe and effective drug in the treatment of minor motor seizures, particularly infantile spasms, and is even more useful than ACTH in this serious form of epilepsy. In older children its value is chiefly for myoclonic seizures, but the degree and duration of its effectiveness appear to be more limited.  相似文献

Characteristics of early ontogeny and the formation of cognitive functions of left-and right-handed boys six to seven years of age have been studied with the genesis of handedness taken into account. A comparative analysis of cognition in right-and left-handed children has been performed using a unified approach to the history of early ontogeny with special emphasis on cognitive functions. The negative effect of pathological pregnancies and births, as well as disturbances in early ontogeny, on the development of cognitive functions in both left-and right-handed boys has been shown. The most “vulnerable” functions in right-handed boys with a history of various pathologies are the organization of activity and visuospatial perception; in left-handed boys, these are fine motor skills and speech development. In the absence of pathologies in the medical history, significantly higher indices of the organization of activity and visuomotor coordination have been found in right-handed boys and significantly higher indices of visuospatial perception, in left-handed boys.  相似文献

We retrospectively evaluated a set of 205 children with autism and compared it to the partial sub-set of 71 (34.6%) children with a history of regression. From 71 children with regression, signs of epileptic processes were present in 43 (60.6%), 28 (65.12%) suffered clinical epileptic seizures, and 15 (34.9%) just had an epileptiform abnormality on the EEG. In our analysis, autistic regression is substantially more associated with epileptic process symptoms than in children with autism and no history of regression. More than 90% of children with a history of regression also show IQ < 70 and reduced functionality. Functionality and IQ further worsens with the occurrence of epileptic seizures (98% of children with regression and epilepsy have IQ < 70). We proved that low IQ and reduced functionality significantly correlate rather with epileptic seizures than just sub-clinical epileptiform abnormality on EEG. Clinical epileptic seizures associated with regression significantly influence the age of regression and its clinical type. The age of regression is higher compared to children with regression without epileptic seizures (in median: 35 months of age in patients with seizures while only 24 months in other patients). Patients with seizures revealed regression after 24th months of age in 68% of cases, while patients without seizures only in 27%. However, coincidence with epilepsy also increased the occurrence of regression before the 18th month of age (23% of patients), while only 4% of patients without epilepsy revealed regression before the 18th month. Epileptic seizures are significantly associated especially with behaviour regression rather than speech regression or regression in both behaviour and speech. Also epileptic seizures diagnosed before correct diagnosis of autism were significantly associated with delayed regression (both behavioural and speech regression).  相似文献

We retrospectively investigated outcome data for vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in children less than 12 years of age with intractable seizures and mitochondrial disease. Five children with a mitochondrial disease, due to electron transport chain deficiency, were studied. Information was collected from clinic visits prior to, and subsequent to, VNS implantation. Data were collected by type and frequency of seizures, encephalogram and neuroimaging findings, and medication history. Four of the children had predominantly myoclonic seizures, while the other child had focal seizures with secondary generalization and myoclonic seizures. All five children did not have significant reduction in seizure frequency with VNS. VNS may not be an effective method to control myoclonic seizures in children with electron transport chain disorders.  相似文献

The development of planning ability in children initially aged four and five was examined longitudinally with a retest-interval of 12 months using the Tower of London task. As expected, problems to solve straightforward without mental look-ahead were mastered by most, even the youngest children. Problems demanding look-ahead were more difficult and accuracy improved significantly with age and over time. This development was strongly moderated by sex: In contrast to coeval boys, four year old girls showed an impressive performance enhancement at age five, reaching the performance of six year olds, whereas four year old boys lagged behind and caught up with girls at the age of six, the typical age of school enrollment. This sex-specific development of planning was clearly separated from overall intelligence: young boys showed a steeper increase in raw intelligence scores than girls, whereas in the older groups scores developed similarly. The observed sex differences in planning development are evident even within a narrow time window of twelve months and may relate to differences in maturational trajectories for girls and boys in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.  相似文献
