The fine structure and distribution of various types of antennal sensilla in three nymphal stages and in adults of both solitary-reared (solitary) and crowd-reared (gregarious) phases of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Four types of sensilla were identified: sensilla basiconica, s. trichodea, s. coeloconica and s. chaetica. S. basiconica contain up to 50 sensory neurons, each of which displays massive dendritic branching. The sensillar wall is penetrated by a large number of pores. In contrast, s. trichodea contain one to three sensory neurons that branch to give five or six dendrites in the sensillar lumen; the sensillum wall is penetrated by relatively few pores. The s. coeloconica are situated in spherical cuticular pits on the antennal surface. The s. coeloconica are of two types: one type contains one to three sensory neurons with double sensillar walls penetrated by slit-like pores, whereas the second type contains four sensory neurons with non-porous double sensillar walls. The s. chaetica have a flexible socket and a thick non-porous sensillum wall and contain four sensory neurons that send unbranched dendrites to a terminal pore. A fifth sensory neuron of the s. chaetica terminates in a tubular body at the base of the hair. S. basiconica and coeloconica are normally distributed over the entire antennal flagellum, with a concentration in the middle segments; s. trichodea have three areas of concentration on the 5th, 10th and 14th flagellar segments. Sensilla chaetica are most abundant on the terminal segment. Locusts raised in solitary conditions have more olfactory sensilla (s. basiconica and s. coeloconica) than crowd-reared locusts. The difference in sensillar numbers is more evident in adults than in nymphs. These results suggest that differences in the odour-mediated behaviour of nymphs and adults, and between the phases of S. gregaria, may be attributable to differences at the sensory input level.  相似文献

The Australian ‘little ash beetle’ Acanthocnemus nigricans (Coleoptera, Cleroidea, Acanthocnemidae) is attracted by forest fires. A. nigricans has one pair of unique prothoracic sensory organs and it has been speculated that these organs may play a role in fire detection. Each organ consists of a cuticular disc, which is fixed over an air-filled cavity. On the outer surface of the disc, about 90 tiny cuticular sensilla are situated. The poreless outer peg of a sensillum is 3–5 μm long and is surrounded by a cuticular wall. One ciliary sensory cell innervates the peg. As a special feature, the outer dendritic segment is very short already terminating below the cuticle. A massive electron-dense cylindrical rod, which most probably represents the hypertrophied dendritic sheath, extends through the cuticular canal connecting the tip of the outer dendritic segment to the peg. The dendritic inner segment and the soma are fused indistinguishably. Thin, leaflike extensions of glial cells deeply extend into that conjoint and considerably enlarged compartment which also contains large numbers of mitochondria. In summary, the sensilla of the sensory disc of A. nigricans represent a new type of insect sensillum of hitherto unknown function. The possible role of the prothoracic sensory organ in fire detection is discussed.  相似文献

The fine structure of coeloconic sensilla of Bombyx mori was studied in cryofixed specimens. These sensilla belong to the category of double-walled wall-pore sensilla. The pegs are approximately 10 mum long, located in pits on the dorsal side of the antennal branches, and longitudinally grooved in their distal half (grooved surface approximately 30 mum(2)). The central lumen contains the outer dendritic segments of usually five receptor cells, and is surrounded by up to 15 partially fused cuticular fingers. The peripheral lumina of these cuticular fingers are filled with material resembling wax-canal filaments. Radial spoke channels ( approximately 600 per peg), each 10-20 nm wide, connect the central lumen with the longitudinal groove channels. Groove and spoke channels are assumed to mediate the transport of odorant molecules from the outer epicuticular surface layers to the sensory dendrites. Thus the double-walled wall-pore sensilla represent a bauplan essentially different from single-walled wall-pore sensilla; the reason, however, why the two types are found together throughout the insect orders remains enigmatic. Other peculiar features of the coeloconic sensilla of the silkmoth are invaginations of the outer dendritic segments and direct contacts between the receptor cell somata. The latter may be the structural correlate to electrophysiological observations indicative of peripheral interaction between the receptor neurons. All three auxiliary cells have elaborately folded apical plasma membranes studded with portasomes and associated with an abundance of mitochondria; basally they often contact tracheal branches. As compared to the auxiliary cells of the single-walled olfactory sensilla of the same species, all the mentioned features are much more prominent and hint to a higher ion pumping activity at the border to the sensillum-lymph cavities.  相似文献

The cuticular sensory receptors that are found on the apex of the labium of hemipterans play an important role in their feeding behavior. In this study we describe the ultrastructure, number, and distribution of sensilla on the labium apex of the chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus leucopterus. Each apical field of sensilla on the labium contains 11 uniporous peg sensilla and one sensillum chaeticum. The uniporous peg sensilla are innervated by 4–5 bipolar neurons that send dendrites in the lumen of each peg. Three neurons are associated with each sensillum chaeticum, two neurons have dendrites in the lumen of the sensillum, and the third dendrite ends in a tubular body at the base of the sensillum. Behavioral tests that involve chemical blockage of the sensory receptors show the importance of the labial sensilla in feeding behavior. Both morphological and behavioral evidence indicate that the labial sensilla have a chemosensitive function.  相似文献

The distribution and fine morphology of antennal sensilla of nymphal and adult mayfly, Baetis rhodani (Ephemeroptera : Baetidae), were examined. In the nymph, various kinds of sensilla (chaetica, basiconica, coeloconica and cuticular pits) are differently arranged on the antennal segments, whereas sensilla campaniformia delimit the distal border of the pedicel. A peculiar kind of sensillum basiconicum, named flat-tipped sensillum, is present along the entire antenna, even though in the flagellum it has a regular arrangement between the cuticular lobes that delimit the distal border of each article. In the subimago the scape and pedicel are profusely covered with microtrichia and scattered sensilla trichodea, whereas the flagellum shows cuticular ribs. Sensilla coeloconica are present along the ventral side of the flagellum. In the imago, the antenna is completely decorated with scales among which sensilla trichodea and sensilla coeloconica occasionally occur. As in the nymph, adult mayflies have a ring of sensilla campaniformia along the distal border of the pedicel. When compared with nymphal antennae, those of adults have fewer types of sensilla, presumably in relation to the short, non-feeding terrestrial life.  相似文献

Sensilla on the antennae of adult and last-instar nymphs of the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Hemiptera: Miridae), were examined with light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Six different types were identified in adult females and males and 5 types in last-instar nymphs: types 1 and 4 are sensilla trichodea, 2 and 3 are sensilla chaetica, and 5 and 6 are sensilla basiconica. Type 1 are located at distal region of terminal segment and type 2 are located at distal regions of proximal 3 segments in both adults and nymphs. Type 3 is present on all segments, more numerous on scape and pedicel and less abundant on distal third and fourth segments in both adult and nymphal stages. Types 4 and 6 are absent on the scape and present on the distal 3 antennal segments in adults, but they are present only on the distal-most antennal segment in nymphs. Type 5 sensilla are present only on second antennal segments in adults and are absent in nymphs. Sexual dimorphism is observed in total numbers: there are significantly more type(s) 3, 4, 5 and 6 sensilla in adult males than adult females. Types 1, 4 and 5 are multiporous with thin cuticle, branched dendrites and pore tubules which suggests an olfactory function. These sensilla have 3, 3 and 2 neurons, respectively. The type 6 sensillum has an apical pore and pores in the cuticular wall, and is innervated by 5 nerve cells with unbranched dendrites. Sensillar types 2 and 3 have thick cuticle, a single apical pore and nerve cells with unbranched dendrites. Type 2 has 1 neuron and type 3 has 2 chambers and 2 nerve cells.  相似文献

The overall body dimensions and external morphology of the head, head appendages, prothorax, and prothoracic legs of the adult haploid male and diploid female Xyleborus ferrugineus (Fabricius) were examined by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy, and analyzed for variation. The female is significantly larger (1.26 X) than the male. The length/width ratio of both the pronotum and elytron, and the pronotum-length/elytron-length ratio are significantly different in the male and female. These findings indicate a distinct sexual dimorphism in general body form. There is significantly greater variability in pronotal length and width in the male than the female. There are sexual differences in setal patterns and setal size variabilities on the dorsal pronotum and the terminus of the antennae.  相似文献

The pronotum is the most distinctive and representative structure in treehoppers. Although several functions have been proposed for this structure, its involvement in fitness has not been formally evaluated. Given the high degree of maternal investment exhibited by the subsocial membracid Alchisme grossa (Hoplophorionini), the pronotum has been suggested as a shield for offspring protection. We performed selection gradient analyses on A. grossa in order to evaluate how natural selection is acting upon two traits associated with this structure considering three different fitness proxies: (1) number of eggs, (2) the ratio between the number of first-stage nymphs and the number of eggs (early survival), and (3) the number of third-stage nymphs (late survival). Since A. grossa feeds, oviposits and mates on two alternative host-plants (Brugmansia suaveolens and Solanum ursinum, both Solanaceae), we also evaluated and compared selection gradients between these host-plants. We found positive linear selection acting upon pronotum length considering the number of eggs and the late survival fitness proxies and positive linear selection acting on the distance between the suprahumeral horns considering the early survival proxy on females ovipositing on both host-plants. These results highlight the importance of the pronotum in treehoppers females’ fitness and suggest that maternal care appears to have a greater importance in the way that natural selection is operating than the host-plant where oviposition occurs.  相似文献

The unusual idiosomal glands of a water mite Teutonia cometes (Koch 1837) were examined by means of transmission and scanning electron microscopy as well as on semi-thin sections. One pair of these glands is situated ventrally in the body cavity of the idiosoma. They run posteriorly from the terminal opening (distal end) on epimeres IV and gradually dilate to their proximal blind end. The terminal opening of each gland is armed with the two fine hair-like mechanoreceptive sensilla (‘pre-anal external’ setae). The proximal part of the glands is formed of columnar secretory epithelium with a voluminous central lumen containing a large single ‘globule’ of electron-dense secretory material. The secretory gland cells contain large nuclei and intensively developed rough endoplasmic reticulum. Secretory granules of Golgi origin are scattered throughout the cell volume in small groups and are discharged from the cells into the lumen between the scarce apical microvilli. The distal part of the glands is formed of another cell type that is not secretory. These cells are composed of narrow strips of the cytoplasm leaving the large intracellular vacuoles. A short excretory cuticular duct formed by special excretory duct cells connects the glands with the external medium. At the base of the terminal opening a cuticular funnel strengthens the gland termination. At the apex of this funnel a valve prevents back-flow of the extruded secretion. These glands, as other dermal glands of water mites, are thought to play a protective role and react to external stimuli with the help of the hair-like sensilla.  相似文献

At least five nonporous sensilla with inflexible sockets (npsensilla) occur on each antenna of both sexes of adult Rhodnius prolixus. Externally the sensillum appears as a short, rounded peg set into a pit surrounded by a depression. A very electron-dense material occurs in the peg lumen and the inner aspect of the pit. Filamentous extensions of this material radiate into the overlying outlets. Each sensillum is innervated by three neurons with unbranched dendrites. Two dendrites extend to the peg tip and distally are covered by a dendritic sheath. The portion of these dendrites within the sheath contains a large number of microtubules. The third dendrite terminates near the base of the dentritic sheath and partially wraps around the other two dendrites. Three sheath cells are associated with each sensillum. Based on similarities in structure with sensilla of known function it is probable that the np-sensilla of R. prolixus are thermo-/hygrosensilla responding to cold, dryness and wetness. The sensilla have a number of structural similarities with insect rectal sheath cells known to absorb atmospheric water by electroosmosis. Possibly this process leads to volumetric alterations of cuticular elements associated with the dendrites and ultimately to mechanotransduction.  相似文献

The external proprioceptor organs of Cicadella viridis (L.) (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) are identified and localized. They are composed of hair and campaniform sensilla grouped together and located in or near the joint areas of various parts of the body or in cuticular areas, which come into contact with moving parts. The hair sensilla, 8–75 μm long, are arranged in hair plates or in hair rows; they detect relative movement between parts of the body. Proprioceptor organs of this kind, localized in proximity to joint areas, were found on the legs and on the abdomen. Proprioceptor organs composed of hair sensilla located far from the articular areas were found on the 3rd pair of legs, the thorax, the hind wings, and the abdomen. The campaniform sensilla, which are arranged in fields and groups, in cuticular areas subject to deformations, are of 2 types: with raised caps (type I) and with flat caps (type II). Organs with campaniform sensilla were found on the legs, thorax and wings.  相似文献

The integument and sensilla of the abdominal segments II–VII, together with the tracheal and nerve supply, are described in so far as they can be seen using whole mounts. Such a method often enables the neurons of the sensilla to be seen clearly and to be associated definitely with a certain cuticular structure. The sensilla are compared with those already known from the palps, and it is concluded that probably all those on the abdomen also occur on the palps.  相似文献

The robber fly Mallophora ruficauda is a parasitoid of white grubs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) inhabiting in Pampas region of Argentina. Females locate host’s habitat and lay eggs away from the host in tall grasses. After hatching, larvae fall to the ground and actively seek hosts. Previous works suggested that female would detect the presence of host’s chemical cues, but sensory organs involved in olfaction are still unknown. However, few studies have looked at dipteran parasitoids sensilla, and no study has been undertaken in Asilidae species. The aim of this work was to determine the presence, density, distribution and morphology of chemosensilla in M. ruficauda antennae using optic and scanning microscope techniques. We found that antennae have 4 segments: scape, pedicel, postpedicel and style. We identified basiconic and trichoid sensilla, small and long bristles, and sensory pits. Basiconic sensilla are multiporous and are widely spread between the small bristles through the postpedicel. Trichoid sensilla are grouped in 6–8 units on latero-ventral margin of postpedicel, have mobile base, striated wall and an apical porous. Small bristles are present in the pedicel and postpedicel, and long bristles are found in groups on scape and pedicel. Three different types of sensory pits were observed, with basiconic sensilla, distributed along external and internal lateral side of the postpedicel. Considering the morphological characteristics of the antennae, and based on the olfaction biomechanics, the structure and distribution of these cuticular structures of the parasitoid antennae would contribute to the odour detection mechanism in adults of M. ruficauda.  相似文献

Each maxilla of fourth instar Toxorhynchites brevipalpis bears nine sensilla: Four are located at the tip of the maxillary palp and five on the maxillary body. At the palp tip are three tapered pegs on bulbous bases (MS1, MS2, MS6) that are innervated by four, two, and two neurons, respectively, and probably function in chemoreception. Also at the palp tip is a sturdy, cuticular rod with a lumen (MS5) that opens distally to the exterior. The proximal end of the rod is closed by a cuticular base to which a single unbranched dendrite containing only a few microtubules is attached. The function of MS5 is enigmatic; possibilities include mechanoreception and detection of infrared radiation. On the maxillary body are two tapered pegs on a common bulbous base (GS1, GS2) that are each innervated by three neurons, and probably are chemosensory. Three setae also occur on the maxillary body. They arise from prominent sockets and are each innervated by a neuron terminating at the hair base as a tubular body, a characteristic of cuticular mechanosensilla. The maxillary sensilla are innervated by a total of 18 neurons: 14 are probably chemosensory, three mechanosensory, and one is of unknown function. These results, combined with those from a previous study on antennal sensilla (Jez and McIver, '80), indicate that the mechanosensitive neurons of the antennae and maxillae are a relatively small percentage of the total mechanosensilla on the entire larva. In contrast the chemosensitive neurons of the antennae and maxillae provide most of the information about the chemical environment of the larva. T. brevipalpis has three less than the maximum of seven maxillary palpal sensilla found in larval mosquitoes so far studied. This difference may reflect a lesser need for sensory information about the acceptability of potential food in predators compared to browsers and filter-feeders.  相似文献

Caterpillars of the lycaenid butterfly, Liphyra brassolis, live inside the nests of arboreal weaver ants, Oecophylla smaragdina, and eat their brood. Observations of mature larvae suggest that they are impervious to relentless ant molestation, yet they lack sclerotized cuticular plates. We document a novel form of integumental defence that imparts protection from ant attack whilst maintaining the flexibility necessary to walk with a hydraulic skeleton. Analysis of the trunk integument and cuticular structures of early and late instars of L. brassolis using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and histology revealed three new setae types (disc, clavate, and lanceolate), as well as three new cuticular structures (pored sockets, cuticular pores, and cuticular domes). The unique cuticle is covered with lanceolate setae, which act as endocuticular struts, and overlapping scale‐like sockets, which form a hard, flexible integument. The imperfect armour of the early‐instar larvae suggests that abundant, putatively secretory pores are likely to be homologous to pore cupola organs (PCOs) found in other lycaenid larvae and thus may exude semiochemicals to allay ant aggression. The importance of these pores presumably wanes as structural (setal) cuticular defenses are reinforced in later instars, when adult ants have been observed attacking caterpillars to no avail. The caterpillar's antennae are unusual and seem to be involved in manipulating ant larvae into the caterpillar's mouth. Behavioural observations indicate that the dexterity of these structures is associated with eating ants (myrmecophagy).  相似文献
