Studies on interactions between a larval parasitoid, Pteromalus cerealellae (Boucek) and one of its hosts, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) were carried out in the laboratory. The number of host larvae parasitized by P. cerealellae increased with host larvae at low densities and tended to a plateau at a density of 25 larvae per female parasitoid. Each parasitoid was able to parasitize more hosts and produced more offspring at 20 and 25 °C than at 30 °C. The number of non-infested seeds mixed with seeds infested with the last instar of C. maculatus did not preclude P. cerealellae from identifying infested seeds and attacking larvae inside them. When infested seeds were tightly packed, several host larvae escaped parasitism. P. cerealellae may be a useful biological control agent in newly harvested cowpea with low C. maculatus infestation, and lowering the temperature of the storage system may enhance the effectiveness of this parasitoid.  相似文献

  • 1 Populations of the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) exhibit considerable differences in body size and larval behaviour. We examined whether such variation modifies the relationship between beetle infestation and host plant performance.
  • 2 Larvae from African and Asian biotypes were reared in seeds of four hosts that represented an almost four‐fold variation in seed mass. We estimated mass lost to larval consumption, and compared germination rates and seedling growth between infested and control seeds.
  • 3 In seeds bearing a single larva, the larger‐bodied, contest‐competing larvae of the Asian biotype caused a 38–47% greater reduction in seed mass compared with the smaller‐bodied, scramble‐competing larvae of the African biotype. The amount of seed mass lost per larva remained similar in seeds with one or two scramble‐competing larvae but decreased significantly in seeds bearing two contest‐competing Asian larvae.
  • 4 Differences in larval consumption and behaviour produced striking differences in the frequency of germination. Germination of singly‐infested mung bean (i.e. the smallest host) was 71% for African‐infested seeds versus 11% for Asian‐infested seeds. In cowpea (i.e. the largest host), 76% of Asian‐infested seeds germinated, whereas the germination rate of African‐infested cowpeas (92%) was similar to that of uninfested seeds.
  • 5 Effects of beetle origin persisted after germination. Seedlings derived from Asian‐infested seeds had greater cotyledon damage 7 days after germination, and displayed lower height and less biomass 15 days after germination. Cotyledon damage was a good predictor of seedling performance (i.e. better than seed mass consumed) 15 days after germination.
  • 6 Previous studies have suggested that population differences in larval size and burrowing behaviour (‘centripetal tendency’) reflect adaptation to different‐sized seeds. The present study demonstrates that these differences in turn influence the impact of larval feeding on host viability. Strong biotypic variation makes it difficult to generalize about pest impacts at the level of pest species.

The biology of the weevil Larinus curtus Hochhut was studied in the field in northern Greece and in the laboratory in Rome, Italy, and in Thermi, near Thessaloniki, Greece. The species is univoltine, and adults overwinter in ground litter. Eggs are inserted into the flowers of yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis L.) where the larvae feed mainly on developing achenes, destroying on average over 96% of the seeds in infested flowerheads. Overwintered adults lived up to 84 days, females laid up to 70 eggs each, eggs hatched 4.2 ± 0.6 days after being laid, larvae required 17 to 20 days to develop through the four instars, and pupal development required 4 to 5 days under laboratory conditions. Six percent of 360 seedheads collected on July 13 and 28, 1988 were infested with L. curtus larvae and up to 89% of the larvae were parasitized. The species is recommended for the biological control of C. solstitialis in the United States.  相似文献

Members of the Neotropical primate genus Chiropotes eat large volumes of immature seeds. However, such items are often low in available proteins, and digestion of seeds is further inhibited by tannins. This suggests that overall plant-derived protein intake is relatively low. We examined the presence of insect larvae in partially eaten fruits, compared with intact fruit on trees, and examined fecal pellets for the presence of larvae. We found that red-nosed cuxiú (Chiropotes albinasus) individuals may supplement their limited seed-derived protein intake by ingesting seed-inhabiting insects. Comparison of fruits partially eaten for their seeds with those sampled directly from trees showed that fruits with insect-containing seeds were positively selected in 20 of the 41 C. albinasus diet items tested, suggesting that fruits with infested seeds are actively selected by foraging animals. We found no differences in accessibility to seeds, that is, no differences in husk penetrability between fruits with infested and uninfested seeds excluding the likelihood that insect-infestation results in easier access to the seeds in such fruits. Additionally, none of the C. albinasus fecal samples showed any evidence of living pupae or larvae, indicating that infesting larvae are digested. Our findings raise the possibility that these seed-predating primates might provide net benefits to the plant species they feed on, since they feed from many species of plants and their actions may reduce the populations of seed-infesting insects.  相似文献

Thus far, the release of herbivore‐induced synomones (HIS) has almost exclusively been demonstrated in somatic plant tissue. Here we present evidence for the production of HIS from reproductive tissue, i.e., seeds. The study system consisted of wheat grains (Triticum aestivum L., Poaceae) infested by larvae of the granary weevil Sitophilus granarius L. (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), which in turn are attacked by the parasitic wasp Lariophagus distinguendus Förster (Hymenoptera, Pteromalidae). The use of potential chemical signals from the infested grain for host recognition of L. distinguendus was studied with weevil‐infested grains that had developed under a range of humidity conditions. Wasps always performed longer antennal drumming on infested than healthy grains, demonstrating that they were able to recognize infested grains under all humidity conditions. In grains developed at a high humidity (75% r.h.), host recognition is enabled by chemical signals arising from the host faeces which densely cover infested grains. However, in grains from a low humidity (45% r.h.) almost no faeces are present, indicating that other cues are used by the wasp. Control experiments revealed that these other cues are neither chemical signals from faeces contaminations, volatiles from faeces nor host larvae inside the grain, movement of host larvae, or moisture content of infested grains. Therefore, wasp recognition of infested grains in low humidity conditions is probably based on chemical signals from the grain itself that are induced by the feeding of granary weevil larva. Further experiments revealed that infested grains increase their viability when granary weevil larvae are killed by the idiobiont L. distinguendus. This justifies the categorisation of potential signals from the grain as HIS. To our knowledge, this is the only system where potential HIS in plant seeds have been studied. We discuss whether potential HIS are actively produced by infested grains or are a by‐product of grain metabolism.  相似文献

Two fruit-feeding insects, a gall wasp, Allorhogas sp. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), and a beetle, Apion sp. (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea), were evaluated in their native habitat in Brazil as potential biological control agents of Miconia calvescens DC (Melastomataceae). Allorhogas sp. occurred at two out of three field sites with native populations of M. calvescens, and Apion sp. occurred at all three sites. Both species exhibited aggregated distributions among M. calvescens trees sampled at each site. Allorhogas sp. infested 9.0% and 3.8% of fruits at each of two sites. The number of larvae and pupae of Allorhogas sp. and/or an unidentified parasitoid (Hymenopetera: Eulophidae: Tetrastichinae) ranged from one to five per infested fruit. Fruits infested with Allorhogas sp. were 20% larger and had 79% fewer seeds than healthy fruits. Although adults of Apion sp. were found on leaves and inflorescences of M. calvescens at all three sites, larvae and pupae were found in fruits at only one site, where a maximum of 1.4% of fruits were infested. Fruits infested by Apion sp. contained only one larva or pupa, and were 15% smaller and had 62% fewer seeds than healthy fruits. While a variety of apionids have been used for biological control in the past, this is the first time a braconid wasp has been considered for biological control of a weed.  相似文献

Abstract
  • 1 Damage caused by the three main species of stink bugs occurring on soybean Nezara viridula (Linnaeus), Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) and Euschistus heros (Fabricius) was compared in field cages and in greenhouses. Infestation levels of 4 stink bugs/m row of plants (field cages) and 2 stink bug/plant (greenhouse) for 15 days during the pod filling stage are reported. At harvest, the yield and seed quality were evaluated.
  • 2 In the field, there was no difference in yield between infested and insect‐free plants, but damage to seed quality varied with stink bug species. Plants damaged by P. guildinii had the lowest quality seeds. From 50 g seed samples harvested in the field, the mean weight of seeds classified as ‘good’ was 37.3 g in plants infested with P. guildinii, compared to 41.8, 44.2 and 46.6 g in plants infested with E. heros, N. viridula and the control, respectively.
  • 3 Plants infested with P. guildinii showed the highest number of seeds damaged by stink bugs, whereas those infested with E. heros showed the lowest damage.
  • 4 Plants infested with P. guildinii had 18.5% damaged seeds, higher than the 3.6% and 3.4% damaged seeds from plants infested with the two other species and 0.1% in control plants. The percentage of non‐viable seeds due to stink bug damage was 5.7% for P. guildinii but lower for the other two species.

The responses of roots to feeding by larvae of a citrus root weevil (Diaprepes abbreviatus) were investigated in Citrus grandis (L.) Osb. x Poncirus trifoliata (2N) (L.) Raf.; C. grandis x P. trifoliata (4N); P. trifoliata x C. grandis (Flying Dragon x Nakon); C. paradisi Macf. x P. trifoliata (Swingle citrumelo); C. aurantifolia (Christm.) Swingle (Citrus macrophylla); C. reticulata Blanco (Cleopatra mandarin); C. sinensis (L.) Osb. x P. trifoliata (Carrizo citrange); C. aurantium (L.) (sour orange). Chitinase, chitosanase. β-1,3-glucanase, peroxidase and lysozyme activities were measured and significant differences were observed for some of the cultivars between infested and uninfested rootstocks. Generally, increased activities were observed for chitinases and decreased activities were observed for the other enzymes measured. Numerous significant differences in hydrolase and peroxidase activities were observed between cultivars. Immunological detection revealed that new protein bands occurred in root protein extracts for six of the eight cultivars infested with larvae when an antibody to a class I potato leaf chitinase was used. Antibodies generated against two citrus chitinases of Mr 24 000 (basic chitinase cv. Valencia (C. sinensis) callus, BCVC) and Mr 28 000 (basic chitinase/lysozyme cv. Valencia callus, BCLVC) indicated that chitinases in Carrizo were induced in infested roots when the BCVC antibody was employed. These findings justify calling these proteins pathogenesis-related proteins. The chitinase that BCLVC was prepared from exhibited high lysozyme activities, and the results of western blots showed the presence of proteins at Mr 24 000 and 27 000 which are presumed to be lysozymes. Similar tests using antibodies against β-1, 3-glucanases and peroxidases indicated a diminution of protein bands that cross-reacted with infested root protein extracts compared with what occurred in controls. All of the root extracts were tested against chitosans with various percentages of acetylation; activities were linearly dependent on the amount of chitosan acetylation; i.e. the larger the amount of acetylation, the greater the activity. Significant differences in hydrolase activities were observed between infested and uninfested roots for the rootstocks using the variously acetylated substrates. All of the root protein extracts were capable of degrading peritrophic membranes removed from larvae of D. abbreviatus. This suggests that citrus chitinases may play a role in disrupting the peritrophic membrane such that ingested substances that pose a hazard to the insect may penetrate the membrane more easily.  相似文献

The effects of root feeding by larvae of Sitona hispidulus (F.) (a common weevil pest of white clover) on the rate of transfer of nitrogen between plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were investigated using a nutrient slant board technique. Clover plants, labelled with 15N were grown adjacent to ryegrass plants and were either infested with Sitona larvae or not infested. Ryegrass plants associated with the infested clover plants had a significantly higher dry matter yield and nitrogen content (75% and 74% respectively) than the uninvested plants, after 33 days exposure to insect herbivory. It was concluded that root feeding insects could play an important role in the cycling of nitrogen in grass/clover swards.  相似文献

The role of red‐footed tortoises (Geochelone carbonaria) and yellow‐footed tortoises (G. denticulata) as seed dispersal agents was investigated in northwestern Brazil from 5 to 26 January 2002 by analyzing fecal samples for frequency and viability of seed species and estimating daily displacement of tortoises from recaptured and thread‐trailed individuals. Fourteen of 19 fecal samples contained a total of 646 seeds represented by 11 plant species. The most abundant species was Ficus sp. (N= 400) with 100 percent of seeds viable, followed by Aechmea sp. (N = 88) with 93 percent of seeds viable, and Genipa americana (N= 59) with 91 percent of seeds viable. Mean minimum retention time of seeds was 1.6 d and mean daily displacement of tortoises based on recaptured (N= 7) and thread‐trailed tortoises (N= 2) was 57 m. Thus, the diversity and proportion of viable seeds consumed by tortoises, combined with the seed retention times and daily movements, suggest they may be effective dispersal agents. These preliminary findings warrant further investigation into the ecological role of these tortoises in Neotropical ecosystems and their contribution to the maintenance of species diversity and forest structure.  相似文献

The larvae of blow fly (Trypocalliphora braueri) are known to cause a subcutaneous myiasis in bird nestlings mainly in Nearctic species, while only a few records are available from the Palaearctic. Here, we report on infestations of this insect ectoparasite in two passerine species, Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis) and Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica), breeding in the Central European mountain range Krkonoše. The infestation of T. braueri parasite was relatively low in studied bird species (3.0% of infested nests in Meadow Pipit and 4.2% in Bluethroat) but varied strongly between years (0–33% of infested nests/year/species). The presence of the parasitic blow fly larvae was apparently controlled by temperature; they were found only during warm summers. The combination of parasite infection and heavy rainfalls in a critical period significantly reduced nestling survival.  相似文献

Larvae of the wild multivoltine bruchid seed beetle Bruchidius dorsalis infest dry mature seeds of the Japanese honey locust Gleditsia japonica. The frequency distribution of B. dorsalis larvae per seed was examined in the laboratory. First, preliminary observation showed that the first-instar B. dorsalis larva crawled from an eggshell and traveled in excess of 25 cm before boring into a seed. Larvae prefer boring into noninfested rather than infested seeds (indicated by a previous emergence hole). When a larva occasionally bored into a previously infested seed, it could emerge as an adult in spite of decreased body weight. Second, we conducted experiment 1 to investigate the frequency distributions of the number of boring holes per seed; results showed significantly regular distributions (a smaller variance than Poisson) in which most seeds had been bored by one larva. Third, we performed experiment 2 to examine the relationship between the initial number of larvae boring into one seed and the number of emerged adults and their body weight from a given seed. When we increased the ratio of egg density to seed abundance by experimental manipulation, multiple larvae (up to ten) could bore into one seed. However, only one adult emerged from each of about 85% seeds with multiple borings. When one adult emerged, the adult body weight was constant, independent of the initial number of larvae boring into the seed. Two adults occasionally emerged from one seed with a large difference in their body sizes. Even in this case, the larger adult was as heavy as that in a single emergence, although the other was significantly smaller (about 60%) than the normal size. These results show severe contest-type competition among B. dorsalis larvae within one seed. This study investigated the interactions of large African herbivores and bruchid seed beetles with Acacia seeds. The germination of bruchid-infested and uninfested seeds was compaed. The effects of pod consumption by large herbivores on bruchid infestation and seed germination was also assessed. Bruchid-infested seeds did germinate, and the germination of bruchid-infested and uninfested A. tortilis, A. nilotica and A. hebeclade seeds did not differ. Pod ingestion by large herbivores lowered the bruchid infestation of consumed and defaecated seeds compared to uningested seeds. Uninfested, ingested and voided A. tortilis seeds germinated seeds. Furthermore, infested A. tortilis seeds egested by giraffe, kudu and ostrich germinated better than infested, uningested seeds. Pod ingestion by large herbivores may reduce bruchid infestation, increase Acacia seed germination and therefore increase potential Acacia seedling recruitment.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to study the efficacy of the insect parasitic nematodeHeterorhabditis sp. (HW79) as a biological control agent ofOtiorrhynchus salicicola. This weevil species is reported as a pest of ornamental plants in Switzerland and Italy. Dipping plastic boxes containing heavily infested cuttings of laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) in a nematode suspension resulted in approximately 100% parasitisation of full-grown larvae, pupae and non-emerged young adults. The average dose resulting from dipping varied between 56,000 and 62,000 nematodes per liter soil. This experiment was run under natural outdoor conditions. In a further outdoor experiment, pottedLigustrum plants were inoculated with eggs ofO. salicicola and later 20,000 infective juvenile nematodes per liter soil were added to the soil surface. The resulting weevil mortality in the treated pots was 78%. In seven greenhouse tests using the same nematode dose in pots with horticultural soil to which weevil larvae had been added, weevil mortality varied between 76% and 100%, the arithmetic average being 90%. These results indicate that Heterorhabditid nematodes may provide an effective means of controllingO. salicicola. In an other experiment usingO. sulcatus larvae, the influence of application time on nematode efficacy was investigated. When nematodes were added a few days before weevil larvae had hatched from the eggs, no parasitic effect was obtained. Nematode applications done shortly after larval hatching however, resulted in complete weevil control. These results are of significance in timing nematode applications in practice.   相似文献

1 Parasitoids Bracon cephi (Gahan) and Bracon lissogaster Muesebeck and their herbivorous host the wheat stem sawfly Cephus cinctus Norton, a pest of wheat Triticum aestivum, were investigated for yield in T. aestivum grown in the field. 2 Wheat stem sawfly‐infested stems had a higher yield potential than uninfested stems. However, final reproductive output was not significantly different between ears on infested stems that supported complete larval development compared with ears on uninfested stems. 3 Stems containing parasitized larvae and stems containing larvae that died before completing their development had a higher mean number of seeds and seed weight, when accounting for number of fertile spikelets of each ear, than either infested with live larvae and uninfested stems. 4 The results obtained suggest that larval feeding prevented infested stems from attaining their yield potential, and that the negative impact of the pest on wheat yield was reduced when late instar sawfly larvae were parasitized. Even though some feeding occurs before parasitism, this early damage has a comparatively low impact on yield. 5 This is the first study to show a yield benefit and enhanced plant fitness due to the wheat stem sawfly parasitoids B. cephi and B. lissogaster. This results from the maintenance of increased seed number and seed weight in the higher yielding stems that are preferentially infested by this pest.  相似文献

Nemorilla maculosa Meigen (Diptera: Tachinidae) is a solitary endoparasitoid of the legume pod borer, Maruca vitrata Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a key pest of cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. (Fabaceae) in Africa. A colony of N. maculosa, introduced for experimental purposes from Taiwan to the laboratories of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Benin, was used for our studies. Olfactory reponses of N. maculosa to leaves of infested or uninfested cowpea and yellow peabush, Sesbania cannabina (Retz.) Pers. (Fabaceae), and to M. vitrata larvae were evaluated in a four‐arm olfactometer. For all combinations of odor sources, responses between naïve and oviposition‐experienced female flies did not differ. Nemorilla maculosa females were attracted by odors from uninfested leaves of yellow peabush and flowers of cowpea when compared with clean air, and they were attracted to plants damaged by M. vitrata with larvae removed. However, the female fly did not discriminate between odors from infested and uninfested plants. The parasitic fly N. maculosa proved well able to use volatile compounds from various host plants (peabush and cowpea) to locate its host, with a more pronounced attraction by the combination of host larvae and infested host plant parts. These findings are discussed in light of the prospective use of N. maculosa as a biological control agent against the legume pod borer.  相似文献

An aqueous suspension of Nosema marucae spores was sprayed on foliage of sorghum plants that had been infested with neonate Chilo partellus larvae at 3, 5, 7 and 9 weeks after (plant) emergence (WAE). These periods corresponded to plants at the tillering, early booting, soft dough and late maturation phenological stages, respectively. The extent of borer infestation and plant damage was monitored until crop harvest, and compared with plants which had been similarly infested but not sprayed with the pathogen, and with plants in insect‐free control plots. When applied early, infestation with neonate borer larvae caused most damage to the plants and the greatest reduction in yield in the untreated plots. Early treatment with N. marucae spores at 3 and 5 WAE resulted in the greatest reduction in damage to plants and the highest improvement in yield of seeds. It is apparent, therefore, that for maximum crop protection the microsporidian needs to be applied when sorghum is in an early phenological stage.  相似文献

The effect of feeding immature Karoo paralysis ticks (Ixodes rubicundus) on the resting metabolic rate (RMR) of their principal natural host, the rock elephant shrew (Elephantulus myurus), was investigated under laboratory conditions. The elephant shrews were artificially infested with numbers of ticks simulating natural burdens. The RMR of the elephant shrews was quantified by measuring the oxygen consumption in an open through-flow system. The RMR of hosts infested only with larvae did not differ from that of the control group. Those infested with nymphs, or nymphs and larvae, had significantly lower RMR's compared to the control animals. There were no signs of paralysis in any of the infested hosts.  相似文献

Abstract

In response to herbivory by cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae) larvae, crucifer plants emit green leaf volatiles (GLVs) that attract Cotesia glomerata, a carnivorous natural enemy of the larvae. To artificially increase GLV production by crucifers, we created transgenic Arabidopsis that constitutively expressed cucumber cytosolic lipoxygenase (CsLOX2). Transgenic Arabidopsis (p35S::CsLOX2.6 and p35S::CsLOX2.14) infested with P. rapae larvae were more attractive to C. glomerata than wild type (wt) and produced more jasmonic acid. p35S::CsLOX2.14 had a higher incidence of parasitism of the larvae than did wt. Infested transgenic plants emitted more (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, (E)-β-ocimene, (Z)-β-ocimene, and DMNT than infested wt plants; (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate is known to attract Cotesia wasps. Transforming cruciferous crops with cytosolic CsLOX2 could aid integrated pest management via tritrophic interactions.  相似文献

A new species of gall midge, Chilophaga virgati Gagn?? (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), collected from tillers of switchgrass at Brookings, South Dakota (44.31134?? N, 96.78374?? W) is described here. Plant morphological symptoms of infestation and frequency of tillers infested are also provided. Full-grown larvae of C. virgati were found inside the sheath of the flag leaf of reproductive tillers of clonally replicated spaced plants of a selected southern upland population of switchgrass during October 2008 and 2009. Infested tillers were shorter and lighter than normal tillers and had panicles that were partially encased in the sheath of the flag leaf due to reduced elongation of the peduncle as a result of the feeding of larvae of C. virgati at the proximal end of the panicle and in the intercalary meristem area of the peduncle. Variation was found among 10 genotypes for percentage of tillers infested by C. virgati, with a range from 7.2% to 21.8%. No difference was found between years for infestation rate (12.7% in 2008 and 14.3% in 2009). The mass of infested tillers was 35% that of normal tillers, and infested tillers produced no appreciable amount of viable seeds. Results of this research revealed that C. virgati had direct negative impacts on biomass and seed production in spaced plant nurseries of switchgrass. C. virgati was also observed in seeded swards of northern upland switchgrass cultivars, but its impact in seeded swards has not yet been determined.  相似文献
