The timing of oviposition and hatching of Ixodes pacificus was investigated in the field and at constant temperatures in the laboratory. Replete females held at temperatures between 9 and 29°C began depositing eggs a mean of 9–70 days after drop off. Egg masses held between 12 and 25°C commenced hatching 25–178 days after the onset of oviposition. Eggs held at 9 or 29°C did not hatch. The lower temperature thresholds for development (LTD) for oviposition and hatching were 6.5 and 9°C, respectively. The number of degree days required for oviposition and hatching was 173 and 588, respectively. Replete females placed in the field on 2 December through to 8 March deposited eggs from 2 February through to 24 April; the eggs commenced hatching between 2 July and 21 August. Unfed larvae from two of 20 egg masses survived through the winter and fed readily when exposed to deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) on 22 April. Replete larvae were returned to the field and moulted between 9 and 21 August. Larvae exposed to deer mice in August, 4 weeks after hatching, also fed readily. Although further studies are needed to clarify the timing of nymphal development, the present study suggests that I. pacificus requires more than 1 year to complete its life cycle.  相似文献

Tadpole shrimp (Triops spp.) are potential biological control agents against larval mosquitoes in temporary ponds and flood-irrigated fields. In some rice field situations, however, they may become pests that uproot and eat young rice plants. In cursory observations, it has been reported that tadpole shrimp eggs do not readily hatch on flooding when the soil or substrate containing eggs is moist before flooding. The relationship between drying (moisture content) of soil and tadpole shrimp hatch was determined in studies conducted in mesocosms at the University of California Aquatic and Vector Control Research facilities at Riverside and at Oasis in the Coachella Valley of southern California. In laboratory hatching trials, an increase in hatch of Triops longicaudatus (LeConte) with declining soil moisture content was demonstrated (t = 8.4, P less than 0.001; r2 = 0.76). In field trials in mesocosms at Riverside, egg hatch increased with increased drying period and declining soil moisture content (G = 29.8, P less than 0.01). No hatch of eggs occurred after 3 d of drying, when soil moisture content was high, but a high level of hatching occurred after 7 and 14 d of drying, when soil moisture declined to low levels. At Oasis, soil moisture did not decrease with drying time because of porous soil and capillary action of water from adjacent flooded mesocosms and thick vegetation covering the pond bottoms. Therefore, hatch rates at Oasis were not associated with the length of the drying period (G = 35, P greater than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Quantitative population dynamical information derived from laboratory- and field-based experiments is provided for the fish-parasitic copepod, Lernaeocera branchialis, infecting flounder (Platichthys flesus) and whiting (Merlangius merlangus). Adult, post-metamorphosis females from whiting can produce more than one set of egg-strings. The mean number of eggs in each egg-string pair was 1445. At 10 °C these eggs took about 12.7 d after extrusion before hatching of NI nauplii began. Hatching took up to 12 days to be completed with an exponentially declining pattern of output over this period. In the laboratory about 44% of the egg-string egg population successfully passed through the NI to NII nauplius moult and the NII to copepodid moult to produce infective copepodids, a process lasting about 2 d. The non-feeding copepodids had a maximum survival time at 10 °C of 18 d, with a time to 50% survival of 7.5 d. In laboratory infection experiments at 10 °C, copepodids infected flounder and passed through all their developmental stages to adulthood and copulation in a minimum of 25 d. Field experiments on the seabed off Lowestoft in June 1987 with a sea temperature of about 16 °C suggested that the developmental period in those conditions could be as short as 11 d. Previously uninfected flounder in the field experiments became naturally infected with copepodids at a mean rate of not less than 30 parasites per fish d–1.  相似文献

Cabbage plants were grown in soil amended with Clandosan (CLA) prepared from crustacean chitin (0.3% w/w). The plants were maintained in constant temperature tanks set to 15° or 30°C, in soils naturally infested with cyst nematodeHeterodera schachtii, or inoculated with the root-knot nematode,Meloidogyne javanica, respectively. At 30°C, after the first month following inoculation, CLA caused an increase in top fresh weight of plants but no reduction in nematode—induced root galling was recorded. However, when fresh plants were planted, CLA induced a large reduction in gall formation and caused an increase in top fresh weight of nematode-inoculated plants. At 15°C, CLA significantly affected the plants only after 60 days: an increase in top fresh weight and a reduction in the number of eggs per cyst were recorded. Ammonium was not detected in soil after 30 days, at 30°C, whereas at 15°C, CLA-treated soil contained twice as much ammonium as non-treated soil. After 60 days, ammonium was not detected at all. After 30 days nitrate concentrations in soil attained higher values at 30°C than at 15°C, whereas after 60 days high levels were detected only at 15°C. At 30°C, CLA induced an increase in the number of fungi, chitinolytic bacteria, and total amount of bacteria; at 15°C, such an increase was detected only with the chitinolytic microorganisms.Contribution from the Agricultural Research Organization (ARO), Bet Dagan, Israel No. 2196-E, 1987 series.  相似文献

Induction of diapausing amictic eggs in Synchaeta pectinata   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Amictic females of a clone of S. pectinata from Star Lake (Norwich, Vermont) may produce diapausing as well as non-diapausing (subitaneous) eggs. The proportion of diapausing eggs produced in cultures was unaffected by temperature (12 vs 19 °C) or rotifer population density (minima of 0.33 vs 3 ind. ml–1) at 19 °C. However, at 19 °C this proportion was higher in cultures maintained at a low food level suppressing reproduction (5 × 103 cells ml–1 Cryptomonas erosa) than in those maintained at a high food level (2 × 104 cells ml–1); the treatment effect was marginally significant (p=0.067). Consistent with the effect of low food availability, a period of starvation was very effective in inducing the development of diapausing eggs. None of 19 females cultured individually from hatching at 19 °C on C. erosa (2 × 104 cells ml–1) in 1-ml volumes produced any diapausing eggs in 4 days (0 out of 349 eggs), while 13 out of 16 females subjected to a 15-hour starvation period 6 hours after birth produced one or more diapausing eggs during that time (34% of the 158 eggs produced by the 16 females were diapausing). Diapausing eggs produced and left at 19 °C hatched after 4 to 13 days. Those produced in cultures with a low food level took significantly longer to hatch (9.7 days) than those produced in cultures with a high food level (8.1 days) (p=0.022). In natural communities, S. pectinata should be able to respond directly and rapidly to poor food conditions by producing eggs that undergo an obligatory dormant period before resuming development.  相似文献

Summary The production of mineralized carbon and nitrogen by a slightly acid sandy loam soil, in the presence and absence of finely chopped fresh plant material or powdered dry plant material, was followed by determination of the amounts of carbon and nitrogen mineralized at intervals during continuous incubation over a period of twelve weeks. Mineralization of carbon and nitrogen was also followed in parallel soil samples and soil plant material mixtures which were dried at 35°C or 105°C and then rewetted every two weeks during the incubation period. The amounts of carbon and nitrogen mineralized were determined at intervals during the incubation period.Mineralization of the carbon and nitrogen of the humus of the soil was stimulated by periodic drying of the soil and particularly when the soil was dried at 105°C.It was found that more mineral nitrogen was produced from fresh plant material than from dried plant material in all the treatments. Periodic drying of the soil-plant material mixtures did not stimulate the production of mineral nitrogen from the added plant material and reduced it considerably when the drying was carried out at 105°C.Periodic drying at 35°C did not stimulate the mineralization of the carbon of fresh or dried plant material. It is clear therefore that, at temperatures occurring in nature, it is unlikely that the decomposition of plant material added to the soil will be stimulated as a consequence of drying of the soil. Periodic drying of the soil-plant material mixture at 105°C increased the mineralization of the carbon of the dried plant material. The amounts of carbon mineralized in 12 weeks from the dried plant material did not, however, exceed the amounts from fresh plant material incubated continuously in fresh soil or in soil periodically dried at 35°C.  相似文献

The behavior of Strobilomyia neanthracina Michelsen, a phytophage infesting spruce (Picea spp.) seed cones, was observed at a field site in northern Ontario and in cages in a greenhouse to investigate spatiotemporal aspects of mating, host location, and oviposition. In the field, adults emerged from 21 to 24 May 1996, which coincided with bud burst of Picea glauca (Moench) Voss seed cones. For 4 days following emergence, Strobilomyia flies could no longer be seen at a monitored P. glauca tree and may have been on a mating or dispersal flight. Subsequently, females but not males were seen again and the oviposition period of ca. 3 weeks began. Mating was observed only in the greenhouse, mostly (i.e., 65%) at age 5–9 days. Although copulations lasted 11–45 min, these females laid infertile eggs only, beginning at age 4 days. No sperm was found in the spermathecal capsules of females, suggesting that no sperm had been transferred during these copulations. In both the field and the greenhouse, ovipositional sequences that resulted in egg deposition occurred throughout the day but few sequences were observed before 1000, probably because flies were not very active at air temperatures below 14°C (most sequences occurred at 25–27°C). In the greenhouse, the typical ovipositional sequence lasted an average of 7 min and consisted of landing on the cone and examining it with the proboscis and sometimes the ovipositor, egg deposition, and postovipositional behaviors such as tapping (touching the cone surface with the flabellum ca. 5 times s –1 ), which possibly represents a host marking behavior. In the field, tapping was seen less frequently than in the greenhouse but occurred significantly (P = 0.014) more often after sequences that resulted in egg deposition than after sequences that did not. Eggs hatched after 4–5 days at 20°C. In the greenhouse, the median longevity of females and males was 24 and 17 days, respectively.  相似文献

Egg hatch was greatest (78.33%) for eggs not previously desiccated. A reduction in numbers hatched occurred as the relative humidity at which they were dried decreased. Some eggs hatched (0.67–79.33%) at pH levels of 3.10–10.01 with the highest hatch at pH 5.60. Water temperature greatly affected egg hatch. No hatch occurred until temperatures were above 14°C. A constant 29°C significantly inhibited hatching. Egg hatch increased 13.00 to 43.42% as salinity decreased from 2200 to 9.24 micromhos/cm. As little as 13 mm of flooded soil covering the eggs prevented them from hatching for 14 days. Eighteen percent hatch resulted when soil and eggs were redistributed to a 1 mm soil layer. Egg samples from the same parent, even though treated similarly, often hatched at greatly varying rates and only rarely was hatching 100% within a replication.  相似文献

Cold storage of Trichogramma ostriniae reared on Sitotroga cerealella eggs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Efficient storage of the biological controlagent Trichogramma ostriniae couldimprove current parasitoid production methodsby making the system more flexible andefficient. Initial studies compared emergencerates of T. ostriniae reared onSitotroga cerealella eggs held at 6 °C, 9 °C, 12 °C,15 °C, and 24 °C for up to 8 weeks after parasitism. At 15 °C, emergence occurred in <2 weeks.Emeregence was >80% for parasitized eggsstored at 9 °C and 12 °C for 4 and 6 weeksrespectively. Storage at 6 °C caused asignificant decline in emergence after 2 weeks. Subsequent trials focused on fitness of storedT. ostriniae. Percentage of emergedfemales parasitizing eggs, female longevity, and fecundity were quantified after storage. The percentage of females successfullyparasitizing O. nubilalis eggs wasgreatest for the 9 °C four-week treatment(100%). Compared to 24 °C controls, storage at12 °C for 6 weeks or at 9 °C for 8 weeks reduced thepercentage of females parasitizing. Longevityof females held in cold storage was generallyless than that of controls. Rates of parasitismby stored Trichogramma was generallysimilar to controls after 2 to 4 weeks' storageat 9 °C and 12 °C but declined with storage longerthan 4 weeks. Emergence of progeny of cold-storedfemales was lower than controls for alltreatments. The percentage of female progenyfrom cold stored females was comparable tocontrols up to 4 weeks of storage.  相似文献

Summary Diapause eggs of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, exposed to 5°C and 0.5°C from 2 or 30 days after oviposition, were examined for changes in contents of glycogen, sorbitol and glycerol. Cold acclimation did not alter the profile of accumulation of sorbitol from that in eggs kept continuously at 25°C. However, acclimation at 5°C resulted in conversion of sorbitol to glycogen, while acclimation at 0.5°C was not accompanied by the utilization of sorbitol. NAD-sorbitol dehydrogenase (NAD-SDH; EC 1.1.1.14) activity was examined in the cold-acclimated eggs. The activity was induced by acclimation at 5°C but not at 0.5°C. Incubation at 0.5°C suppressed any further increase in the activity that had been induced. Temperature-directed changes in NAD-SDH activity paralleled those in sorbitol content. Hatching of the diapause eggs was monitored after cold acclimation for various periods of time and subsequent transfer to 25°C. Incubation at 0.5°C was less effective than 5°C at breaking diapause. The time required for the eggs to hatch in synchrony after acclimation at 5°C coincided with that required for the induction of NAD-SDH activity. These results show that different effects result from acclimation at 5°C and near 0°C with respect to the control of NAD-SDH activity, that utilization of sorbitol is controlled by NAD-SDH activity, and that induction of this activity is temperature-dependent. Furthermore, induction of NAD-SDH activity is involved in the termination of diapause in B. mori.Abbreviations DH diapause hormone - NAD nicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide - NAD-SDH NAD-sorbitol-dehydrogenase  相似文献

The biology ofAblattaria arenaria (Kraatz) was studied in the laboratory by using a helicid snail,Xeropicta derbentina (Kyrnicki) as prey. Population development ofA. arenaria in the field was studied in 1985 and 1986. The eggs ofA. arenaria were laid in the soil in lots of 5–45 at various intervals, and the total number of eggs per female varied from 144 to 193 during the oviposition period of 24–88 days.A. arenaria passed through the egg, 3 larval, prepupal, and pupal stages before reaching the adult stage. The mean duration of these stages was 9.8, 3.9, 2.5, 5.9, 3.8 and 5.7 days, respectively, with a total of 31.4 days. A. arenaria overwintered as an adult and became active and laid eggs during the spring. The start of spring activity seemed to be highly influenced by relative humidity. High humidity resulted in early emergence from overwintering sites. There was 1 generation in 1985, but 2 population peaks occurred in 1986. Immature stages of the 2nd generation became adult before the beginning of aestivation. Activity of the beetles was stopped by the beginning of hot weather in June, which synchronized well with the beginning of snail aestivation.   相似文献

Summary Two temperature-sensitive sex-linkedgrandchildless (gs)-like mutations (gs(1)N26 andgs(1)N441) were induced by ethylmethane sulphonate inDrosophila melanogaster. They complemented each other and mapped at two different loci (1–33.8±0.7 forgs(1)N26 and 1–39.6±1.7 forgs(1)N441), which were not identical to those of any of thegs-like mutants reported in earlier work.Homozygous females of the newly isolated mutants produced eggs that were unable to form pole cells and developed into agametic adults. Competence of the embryos to form pole cells was not restored by wild-type sperm in either mutant; that is, the sterility caused by these mutations is controlled by a maternal effect.Fecundity and fertility ofgs(1)N26 females were low, and their male offspring showed a higher mortality than that of female offspring, causing an abnormal sex ratio. The frequency of agametic progeny was 93.1% and 55.8%, when the female parents were reared at 25° C and 18° C, respectively. In eggs produced by thegs(1)N26 females reared at 25° C, the migration of nuclei to the posterior pole was abnormal, and almost no pole cell formation occurred in these egg. Furthermore, half of these eggs failed to cellularize at the posterior pole. When the females were reared at 18° C, almost all of the eggs underwent complete blastoderm formation, and in half of these blastoderm embryos normal pole cells were formed. In the other mutant,gs(1)N441, the fecundity and fertility of the females were normal. The agametic frequency in the progeny was 70.8% and 18.6% when the female parents were reared at 25° C and 18° C, respectively. In the eggs laid by females reared either at 25° C or at 18° C, the migration of nuclei to the periphery and cellularization proceeded normally; nevertheless, in the majority of the embryos no pole cell formation occured at the stage when nuclei penetrated into the periplasm. When the females were reared at 18° C, some of the embryos from these females formed some round blastoderm cells with cytologically recognizable polar granules and nuclear bodies, which are attributes of pole cells. The temperature sensitive period ofgs(1)N441 was estimated to extend from stage 9 to 13 of King's stages of oogenesis.  相似文献

Biological studies on Laricobius nigrinus Fender (Coleoptera: Derodontidae) were conducted in the laboratory to obtain basic information on this littleknown predator. Laricobius nigrinus is acandidate biological control agent of thehemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugaeAnnand (Homoptera: Adelgidae), an exotic peston eastern (Tsuga canadensis (L.)Carrière) and Carolina (T.caroliniana Engelmann) hemlocks in the easternUnited States. It is univoltine andundergoes an aestival diapause. Post-aestivation activity period was 36.6 and30.8 weeks for males and females, respectively. Adult activity and oviposition are wellsynchronized with the over-wintering generationof A. tsugae. Mean lifetime fecunditywas 100.8 eggs over a mean duration of 13.2weeks oviposition period. Within thetemperature range (12–18°C) studied, development was fastest at 18°C. Meandevelopment time from egg to adult was 88.8,64.8 and 46.6 days at 12, 15 and 18°C,respectively. Laricobius nigrinus hasfour larval instars. Mean larval consumptionwas 225.9 and 252.3 A. tsugae eggs at 12and 18°C, respectively. Thesefindings provide essential data on the rate ofdevelopment and feeding capacity of L. nigrinusat temperatures typical of ambientconditions during late winter/early spring inVirginia. Its rapid development at18°C indicates that it has potential asa biological control agent of A. tsugaebecause of its synchrony with the developmentof the over-wintering generation of A. tsugaein eastern United States.  相似文献

Summary Seedlings of Ceratonia siliqua L., an evergreen sclerophyll species native to the Mediterranean region, were grown in 30-cm deep tubes of John Innes II potting compost in a growth cabinet maintained at 15° C during a 12-h day where PAR was 400 mol m–2 s–1. After a period of acclimatisation to the conditions in the cabinet during which plants were watered every day, water was withheld from the soil in some tubes for 24 days. These conditions may be regarded as a simulation of the natural situation. Estimates of leaf and root water potential and solute potential, leaf growth and root development were made at intervals during the soil drying cycle on both watered and unwatered plants. Water potential and solute potential measurements were made both on young expanding and on fully expanded leaves. During the experimental period, root growth of C. siliqua was not much affected by soil drying, and roots in both the watered and the unwatered columns penetrated to the bottom of the soil tubes by the end of the drying treatment. Expanded leaves showed significant limitation in stomatal conductance as soil drying progressed. Leaf water potential of fully expanded leaves of unwatered plants declined substantially. In contrast, water potential of young expanding leaves on unwatered plants declined to only a limited extent and turgor was sustained. As the soil dried, stomatal conductance of young leaves was always higher than that of mature leaves; also, placticity and elasticity of young leaves slowly decreased whereas mature leaves became stiff. Changing leaf cell wall properties may determine different patterns of water use as the leaves age. A mechanism of continuous diffusion of water through the soil towards the tip and pumping towards the young leaves is proposed.  相似文献

A pot experiment was carried out with pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum [L.] Leeke) growing in a sandy soil in which the upper (topsoil) and lower (subsoil) parts of the pots were separated by a perlite layer to prevent capillary water movement. Using microtensiometers a study was made to establish whether it was possible to measure hydraulic lift by which the upper part of the soil was rewetted when water was supplied exclusively to the lower part of the soil.Hydraulic lift occurred during the first seven days of the period of measurement, with a maximum water release to the soil of 2.7 Vol. % during one night (equivalent to 10.8 mL water in the top 10 cm of the soil profile). This magnitude was obtained at very high root length densities, so that water release from the roots would be expected to be much smaller under field conditions.Hydraulic lift ceased when the soil matric potential in the topsoil dropped below-10 kPa at the end of the light period and could not be re-established, neither by extending the dark period, nor after rewatering the topsoil. The disappearance of hydraulic lift could be explained in part through osmotic adaptation of plant roots and, thus prevention of water release from the roots in the topsoil. It is concluded that hydraulic lift may affect nutrient uptake from drying topsoil by extending the time period favourable for uptake from the topsoil.  相似文献

The slug Arion lusitanicus Mabille (Gastropoda: Pulmonata: Arionidae) is an invasive species which has spread to most parts of Europe. The area of origin is unknown, but A. lusitanicus seems to cope well with the local conditions in the countries to which it has migrated. It spreads rapidly, occurs often in high densities and has become a serious pest in most European countries. Therefore there is an urgent need for better knowledge of the ecophysiology of A. lusitanicus, such as the influence of climatic conditions, in order to develop prognostic models and strategies for novel pest management practises. The aim of our study was to investigate the influence of subzero temperatures in relation to winter survival. A. lusitanicus is shown to be freeze-tolerant in some life stages. Most juveniles and some adult slugs survived being frozen at −1.3 °C for 3 days, but none of the slugs survived freezing at −3 °C. The eggs survived subzero temperatures (down to −2 °C) probably by supercooling. Juveniles and adults may also survive in a supercooled state (down to −3 °C) but are generally poor supercoolers. Therefore, the winter survival of A. lusitanicus depends to a high degree on migration to habitats protected from low winter temperatures, e.g. under plant litter, buried in the soil or in compost heaps.  相似文献

The effects of different temperatures and relative humidities (RHs) were tested on various reproductive parameters of Ornithodoros turicata, an argasid tick that inhabits gopher tortoise burrows in Florida, USA. The pre-oviposition, oviposition and incubation periods of the ticks decreased as temperature increased. These periods were also affected by the RH. The number of eggs oviposited was affected significantly by the combined effect of temperature and RH. Fewer eggs were laid by ticks in the 24°C regimes and the 27°C/95%RH regime compared to those in the other temperature/RH groups. There was an inverse relationship between the number of eggs oviposited and the percentage of hatched larvae that was correlated with the temperature and RH. Ticks reared at 27°C/90%RH and 30°C/90%RH laid more eggs than those reared in the other combinations of temperature and humidity but fewer larvae hatched from these eggs. The reproductive fitness index (RFI) values were highest in females held in the 24°C groups and the 30°C/95%RH group, although significantly more larvae hatched at the lower temperatures. The optimum reproductive conditions for O. turicata under laboratory conditions appear to be 24°C and 90–95%RH. While mating occurred at all temperatures, none of the females laid eggs at 22°C. The ticks may move preferentially to low temperatures when not feeding to remain above the critical equilibrium humidity and/or below the critical metabolic level necessary for prolonged survival. However, most female ticks oviposited after 45 days when moved to 27°C/95%RH. Ornithodoros turicata females may have a limited capability to delay oviposition until an optimal microenvironment for egg deposition can be located in the burrow.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the ovipositional biology ofBoophilus annulatus (Say) was determined under laboratory conditions. Engorged females subjected to constant temperatures of 12 and 45°C died without ovipositing, while females held at 15 and 40°C laid eggs which did not hatch. The preoviposition period at 25–40°C was 2–3 days; however, significant increases occurred at 20°C (5.2 days) and at 15°C (16.3 days). The number of eggs laid per female was ca. 2700 at temperatures of 25–35°C, but decreased significantly at 20°C (ca. 2300 eggs/female), 15°C (ca. 1800 eggs/female), and at 40°C (ca. 300 eggs/female). No differences were observed in the Conversion Efficiency Index (CEI) values at temperatures of 20–30°C (ca. 50%), while temperatures of 15 and 40°C produced the lowest CEI values at 35.6 and 4.9%, respectively. Hatch-ability of eggs was ca. 80% at temperatures of 20–35°C. Incubation period of eggs ranged from 52.2 days at 20°C to 16.2 days at 35°C. The thermal threshold for egg development determined by linear regression was 12.9°C. Females subjected to four fluctuating temperature regimes produced no differences in number of eggs/female (ca. 2400), CEI (ca. 50%), or hatchability of eggs (ca. 75%). Preoviposition period and incubation were significantly affected by a change in the thermoperiod, becoming longer in duration as the temperatures were decreased. From studying females exposed for various intervals from 0 to 105 days at 12°C, indications were that the longer the exposure period the more adverse the effects were on oviposition and egg-hatch. Correspondingly, exposure of eggs to a temperature of 15°C for up to 105 days gave indications that the longer the eggs remained at 15°C, the lower the hatch would be after transfer back to a temperature of 25°C.  相似文献

The distribution and seasonal dynamics of Centropages abdominalis and C. tenuiremis (Copepoda) in Amursky Bay (Sea of Japan) were studied from May through November 1991. C. abdominalis occurred in plankton from May through August and in November, with a peak density of more than 40000 specimens/m3 in June, at a temperature of 15–18°C. C. tenuiremis occurred from late June through November, with a maximum total density of 6900 specimens/m3 in August, at 23°C. During the observation period, the distribution of species in the bay was irregular due to the hydrological regime and sanitary conditions of water.  相似文献

The red alga Stictosiphonia hookeri is epilithic in shaded habitats of the upper intertidal zone from 30 to 55° S. Thalli of this species from Argentina, Chile, South Africa and Australia, usually without reproductive structures when collected, all developed tetrasporangia in culture. Although good vegetative growth occurred in all nine isolates at 20–25 °C, 12:12 light: dark cycle, 10–30 µmol photons m–2 s–1, none reproduced in these conditions except one isolate from Australia. At 15 °C the four South African (34 °S) isolates developed tetrasporangial stichidia, and three completed a Polysiphonia-type life history. Gametophytes were unisexual or bisexual. At 15 °C one isolate from Chile (36 °S) formed tetrasporangia, but sporelings were not viable. At 10 °C isolates from Argentina and Chile (53 °S and 54 °S) formed tetrasporangia; however, only the Chile isolate completed a Polysiphonia-type life history with unisexual gametophytes. The temperature required to induce sporogenesis correlates with the range of water and air temperatures in the natural habitats of each isolate. In irradiances >50 µmol m–2 s–1 the thalli became yellow- brown within two weeks because of phycobiliprotein loss, but this did not impair growth or reproduction. The Argentina and Chile isolates were resistant to freezing in seawater for at least two days, showing no cell damage. The protein cuticle of the outer cell wall is repeatedly shed in culture. This may serve to minimize the attachment of epiphytes in the field.  相似文献
