Silvetia compressa ( J. Agardh) Serrão et al. is a common member of the upper intertidal fucoid community on the Pacific coast of America from Humboldt County, California, to Punta Baja, Baja California, Mexico. A relatively narrow range of morphological variability is exhibited by most mainland populations, regardless of latitude, but some mainland populations and all insular populations participate in a complex pattern that we have attempted to analyze. A few populations on the Monterey Peninsula in which the fronds are atypically delicate were described by Setchell & Gardner as f. gracilis, to which was assigned a population from Santa Catalina Island. After comparing populations from various parts of the range of the species, including all of the Channel Islands, we conclude that two subspecies may be recognized. In subsp. compressa, which includes f. gracilis as a growth form and occurs chiefly on the mainland, the frond is robust with long tapered receptacles. In the variant subspecies, which is chiefly insular but also occurs on the coast of northern Baja California, the typical frond has slender axes as in f. gracilis, but is more densely branched and has short ellipsoidal receptacles. Comparison of nucleotide sequences from the ITS regions of rDNA revealed an identical pattern for subsp. compressa from Baja California and central California, including populations assignable to f. gracilis. By contrast, the pattern for the variant subspecies differed by 2 bp (0.3%) from that of subsp. compressa.  相似文献

Valves of S. niagarae var. niagarae Ehr. and S. niagarae var. magnifica Fricke from geographically dispersed sediment and plankton collections were observed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (LM and SEM). Measurements made by LM can be arranged so that means and ranges of diameter, areolar density, or strial density intergrade from one population into the next. Mean diameter is negatively related to increasing areolar and strial densities. No unique features observable by SEM distinguish the two described varieties. Thus, S. niagarae var. magnifica, having large diameter valves with low areolar and strial densities, may represent one end of a trend in overall variation in S. niagarae. At the opposite extreme are the populations with small valves and high areolar densities which are often erroneously referred to as S. astraea. Type material of S. niagarae lies intermediate to these forms. Three populations considered in this study have distinct morphological characteristics. Valves from Yellowstone Lake sediments have spine placements distinctly different from valves of all other populations. Specimens from Lake Superior have nearly flat central areas. Ribs of valves from Grand Traverse Bay (Lake Michigan) are covered with granules.  相似文献

The three living species of Trichechus are clearly defined and well exemplify the degree of variability and taxonomic value of morphological characters in a well-understood mammalian genus. Statistical analysis of the largest sample of manatee skulls yet studied has allowed us to identify small suites of characters that effectively distinguish these species. The two subspecies of T. manatus proposed by Hatt (1934) can likewise be distinguished, and their use as taxonomic categories seems justified. This suggests that the cool winters of the northern Gulf Coast, on the one hand, and the deep water and strong currents of the Straits of Florida, on the other, are effective barriers to gene flow between Florida and Antillean manatees. Alleged taxonomic distinctions within T. senegalensis , however, have no demonstrated basis. No significant sexual dimorphism was detected in skulls of any of the species. Many interspecific differences can be correlated with feeding ecology, but others remain unexplained. Features of tooth crown morphology are among the most constant characters examined, but some osteological characters are equally good. T. manatas and T. senegalensis (which are phenetically the most similar) also seem to share a more recent common ancestor than either does with T. inunguis. However, the three species probably separated from each other at nearly the same time. T. inunguis has since become the most derived species, while T. senegalensis has changed the least.  相似文献

Samples of the Antarctic limpet, Nacella concinna (Strebel,1908), were collected from four sites in the South Orkney Islandsand from Stromness in South Georgia during 1988. At three SouthOrkney sites, both littoral and sub-littoral samples of limpetswere taken. Shell dimensions were measured and littoral andsub-littoral limpets were shown to have significantly differentshell shapes. Foot and digestive gland tissues were subjectedto electrophoresis and five polymorphic loci {Es-1, lcd-1, lcd-2,Gpi, Got-1 and Pgm-1) and two monomorphic loci (Es-2 and Got-2)were scored. Genetic identities between littoral and sub-littoralforms and also between sites were calculated. At the loci scored, the littoral and sub-littoral forms were virtually identicaland this suggests that the shell shape differences between theforms are the result of environmentally induced phenotypic plasticity. However, significant genetic differences and some morphologicaldifferences were apparent between the sample of limpets fromSouth Georgia and all other sites. Genetic identity values suggestedthat the South Georgia and South Orkney N. concinna are geographicallyseparated populations of a single species rather than distinctsub-species.
