Causes of the latitudinal gradient in birdsong complexity assessed from geographical variation within two Himalayan warbler species 下载免费PDF全文
Aspects of birdsong complexity, such as the number of distinct notes in a song, commonly increase along latitudinal gradients, a pattern for which at least 10 explanations have been suggested. In two Himalayan warblers, songs are more complex in the northwest than in the southeast. In Grey‐hooded Warbler Phylloscopus xanthoschistos, high complexity results from increased note diversity within song types, sung across a higher bandwidth. In Blyth's Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus reguloides, high complexity is a consequence of increased variation between song types. The hypothesis with strongest support is that songs evolved to be more complex in species‐poor, demonstrably less noisy environments. We consider geographical variation to be an outcome of sexual selection favouring complexity across environments, where detection of the signal varies. Sexual selection favouring complexity may be resolved in different ways, because complexity has multiple features (repertoire size, song switching, etc.). We argue this has led to the great diversity in song that we have documented among five Phylloscopus species. 相似文献

The connection between the frequency of acoustic signals application, contact and gestural communication and the manipulation activity of Cercopithecidea and Anthropoidea have been examined. A scheme reflecting the changes of correlational behavioural systems at different periods of primate phylogenesis is proposed. The behavioural changes in the connections of gestures, vocalisation and manipulation activity during the process of their transition into the language and labour on the way to hominization are shown. On the basis of the exact data a possible role of gestural an acoustic signals in the origin of language is given. 相似文献

1. Recordings were made of the natural dischages of neurones in the supplementary motor area (SMA) of conscious monkeys trained to perform a stereotyped motor task with either hand. 2. Eighty % of the total population of cells showed modulation of their activity during particular movements of either limb. Two thirds of this group had a similar pattern of modulation regardless of whether the contralateral or ipsilateral hand was used. 3. The number of cells whose activity was related to movements of distal joints was approximately equal to that whose discharges occurred with proximal movements. 4. Only 5% of cells tested sent their axons into the pyramidal tract, and only 15% of units investigated showed responses to passive manipulation of the limbs. The effective afferent input usually was of a rather complex kind. 5. The findings suggest that the discharges of a large number of neurones in SMA are changing during particular movements of either arm, and that only a small number of cells receive afferent sensory input. These results contrast with those obtained in the primary motor area and suggest a different role for SMA the control of movement. 相似文献

Phonation into a straw is used in voice training and therapy. This study investigated its’ effects on the vocal tract adjustments.Magnetic resonance images were taken from one female phonating first on [a:], then into a plastic drinking straw and then again on [a:]. Acoustic samples were recorded from her and 10 other females. The samples were analyzed for fundamental frequency, sound pressure level (SPL), five lowest formant frequencies (F1–F5) and SPL of the speaker's formant cluster range (2.5–4.5 kHz).During and after phonation into a straw, the midsagittal area of the vocal tract increased and the velar closure improved. The ratio of the transversal area of the lower pharynx over that of the epilarynx increased both during (27%) and after the straw (20%). The overall SPL and the SPL of the speaker's formant cluster increased. The frequencies of F2, F4 and F5 decreased, while F3 increased. The distances between F4 and F3 and F5 and F4 decreased by 49%. For the 10 subjects, F3 increased, F4 decreased and the distance between F3 and F4 decreased significantly. The results suggest that exercising with a straw helps establishing a speaker's formant cluster, which increases loudness and thus improves vocal economy. 相似文献

In healthy individuals, deep inspiration produces bronchodilation and reduced airway responsiveness, which may be a response of the airway wall to mechanical stretch. The aim of this study was to examine the in vitro response of isolated human airways to the dynamic mechanical stretch associated with normal breathing. Human bronchial segments (n = 6) were acquired from patients without airflow obstruction undergoing lung resection for pulmonary neoplasms. The side branches were ligated and the airways were mounted in an organ bath chamber. Airway narrowing to cumulative concentrations of acetylcholine (3 × 10(-6) M to 3 × 10(-3) M) was measured under static conditions and in the presence of "tidal" oscillations with intermittent "deep inspiration." Respiratory maneuvers were simulated by varying transmural pressure using a motor-controlled syringe pump (tidal 5 to 10 cmH(2)O at 0.25 Hz, deep inspiration 5 to 30 cmH(2)O). Airway narrowing was determined from decreases in lumen volume. Tidal oscillation had no effect on airway responses to acetylcholine which was similar to those under static conditions. Deep inspiration in tidally oscillating, acetylcholine-contracted airways produced potent, transient (<1 min) bronchodilation, ranging from full reversal in airway narrowing at low acetylcholine concentrations to ~50% reversal at the highest concentration. This resulted in a temporary reduction in maximal airway response (P < 0.001), without a change in sensitivity to acetylcholine. Our findings are that the mechanical stretch of human airways produced by physiological transmural pressures generated during deep inspiration produces bronchodilation and a transient reduction in airway responsiveness, which can explain the beneficial effects of deep inspiration in bronchial provocation testing in vivo. 相似文献

To test the hypothesis that serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT)-receptor activation elicits age-dependent changes in respiratory motor output, we compared the effects of 5-HT bath application (5-HT concentration = 0.5-25 microM) onto in vitro brain stem preparations from pre- and postmetamorphic bullfrog tadpoles. Recording of motor output related to gill and lung ventilation showed that 5-HT elicits a dose-dependent depression of gill burst frequency in both groups. In contrast, the lung burst frequency response was stage dependent; an increase in lung burst frequency at low 5-HT concentration (< or =0.5 microM) was observed only in the postmetamorphic group. Higher 5-HT concentrations decreased lung burst frequency in all preparations. Gill burst frequency attenuation is mediated (at least in part) by 5-HT(1A)-receptor activation in an age-dependent fashion. We conclude that serotonergic modulation of respiratory motor output 1) changes during tadpole development and 2) is distinct for gill and lung ventilation. 相似文献

Growling for food: acoustic emissions during competitive feeding of the streaked gurnard 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The streaked gurnard Trigloporus lastoviza produced only one sound type, a growl, lasting up to 3 s and consisting of repeated groups of typically one to three pulses. The foraging fish followed two different strategies. In the first, the fish circled the feeding area, grasped a food item and fled, sometimes displaying aggressively to competitors. With this foraging strategy, fish usually made sounds as they circled, grasped and fled. Fish that growled while circling were more likely to grasp a food item subsequently than were silent fish. The second feeding strategy occurred when a fish had already ingested food or failed to get any. In this case, typically fish searched for food on the substratum or approached and touched other individuals that were feeding, sometimes grabbing food that was spat out during food handling by the other fish. Although payback experiments would be needed to draw firm conclusions on the communicative function of growling during competitive feeding in the streaked gurnard, the results suggest that sound production confers advantages to individuals competing for limited food resources. 相似文献

Three flexor muscles of the posterior tentacles of the snail Helix pomatia have recently been described. Here, we identify their local motor neurons by following the retrograde transport of neurobiotin injected into these muscles. The mostly unipolar motor neurons (15–35 µm) are confined to the tentacle digits and send motor axons to the M2 and M3 muscles. Electron microscopy revealed small dark neurons (5–7 µm diameter) and light neurons with 12–18 (T1 type) and 18–30 µm diameters (T2 type) in the digits. The diameters of the neurobiotin-labeled neurons corresponded to the T1 type light neurons. The neuronal processes of T1 type motor neurons arborize extensively in the neuropil area of the digits and receive synaptic inputs from local neuronal elements involved in peripheral olfactory information processing. These findings support the existence of a peripheral stimulus–response pathway, consisting of olfactory stimulus—local motor neuron—motor response components, to generate local lateral movements of the tentacle tip (“quiver”). In addition, physiological results showed that each flexor muscle receives distinct central motor commands via different peritentacular nerves and common central motor commands via tentacle digits, respectively. The distal axonal segments of the common pathway can receive inputs from local interneurons in the digits modulating the motor axon activity peripherally without soma excitation. These elements constitute a local microcircuit consisting of olfactory stimulus—distal segments of central motor axons—motor response components, to induce patterned contraction movements of the tentacle. The two local microcircuits described above provide a comprehensive neuroanatomical basis of tentacle movements without the involvement of the CNS. 相似文献

Complexity (or its opposite, regularity) of heart period variability has been related to age and disease but never linked to a progressive shift of the sympathovagal balance. We compare several well established estimates of complexity of heart period variability based on entropy rates [i.e., approximate entropy (ApEn), sample entropy (SampEn), and correct conditional entropy (CCE)] during an experimental protocol known to produce a gradual shift of the sympathovagal balance toward sympathetic activation and vagal withdrawal (i.e., the graded head-up tilt test). Complexity analysis was carried out in 17 healthy subjects over short heart period variability series ( approximately 250 cardiac beats) derived from ECG recordings during head-up tilt with table inclination randomly chosen inside the set {0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90}. We found that 1) ApEn does not change significantly during the protocol; 2) all indices measuring complexity based on entropy rates, including ad hoc corrections of the bias arising from their evaluation over short data sequences (i.e., corrected ApEn, SampEn, CCE), evidence a progressive decrease of complexity as a function of the tilt table inclination, thus indicating that complexity is under control of the autonomic nervous system; 3) corrected ApEn, SampEn, and CCE provide global indices that can be helpful to monitor sympathovagal balance. 相似文献
