Avidin was found to be an insecticidal and growth inhibiting dietary protein for five species of Coleoptera (red flour beetle,Tribolium castaneum, confused flour beetle,T. confusum, sawtoothed grain beetle,Oryzaphilus surinamensis, rice weevil,Sitophilus oryzae, and lesser grain borer,Rhyzopertha dominica) and two species of Lepidoptera (European corn borer,Ostrinia nubilalis, and Indianmeal moth,Plodia interpunctella). At levels ranging from 10 to 1000 ppm in the diet depending on the species, avidin retarded the growth and caused mortality of all seven species. Addition of biotin to the avidin-treated diets forT. castaneum, T. confusum, R. dominica, andO. nubilalis prevented the growth inhibition and mortality caused by avidin. Streptavidin exhibited similar insecticidal and growth inhibiting activity towardsT. castaneum andO. nubilalis. The results support the hypothesis that feeding avidin or streptavidin to insects causes a biotin deficiency which in turn leads to stunted growth and mortality. Avidin and streptavidin are insect growth inhibiting proteins whose genes potentially could be manipulated into plants and provide host plant resistance to insect pests. The goal of this study was to better understand why dietary soybean products are poorly utilized by salmonids. The influence of dietary intake on coho salmon fingerling weight gain and specific properties of pyloric caeca enzymes was investigated. Fingerlings were fed diets containing heated or unheated soybean meal (SBM) or Promoveal™, as 15–25% herring meal replacer, for 8–12 weeks. Fish fed to apparent satiation with diets containing heated SBM replacer gained more weight than those fed unheated SBM at the same level. Fish increased in body weight at the same rate when fed restricted rations containing either 15% SBM replacer that was variously heated up to 20 min, 15% Promoveal™ replacer or the herring meal basal diet. After the experimental diets were fed, digestive proteinases were isolated from the pyloric caeca. Yield of pyloric caeca enzymes (PCE), recovery of trypsin in PCE, soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI) sensitivity of PCE trypsin, specific activity of PCE trypsin and in vitro casein digestibility by PCE were determined for each dietary group. Weight gain vs in vitro casein digestibility by PCE was linear for animals fed unheated SBM to apparent satiation (r2 = 0.71, P < 0.1) but not for animals fed either heated SBM to apparent satiation or variously heated SBM as 15% replacer at restricted levels. Trypsin from fish fed diets with heated or unheated SBM, but not Promoveal™ replacer, was less sensitive to SBTI than fish fed no SBM. For fish fed diets with variously heated SBM as 15% replacer, the SBTI activity of the SBM and SBTI inhibition of PCE trypsin were inversely related (r2 = 0.88, P < 0.05). The yield of PCE was higher for fish fed 25% of heated SBM replacer than it was for diet groups fed less SBM. The yield of PCE trypsin was higher from animals fed 25% heated SBM replacer than those fed diets with a lower percentage of heated SBM replacer. Feeding coho fingerlings rations with SBM replacer appears to promote physiological compensation of PCE. Heat stable and/or heat-activated factor(s) and SBTI appear to cause the compensation of salmon digestive proteinases from coho salmon fed diets with SBM.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to determine the immunomodulatory effects of high dietary ascorbic acid (vitamin C) on growth, serum concentration, non-specific immune response and disease resistance of a commercially important Asian catfish, Clarias batrachus. Four practical diets were formulated to contain 0, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg ascorbic acid (AA) equivalent/kg diet, supplied as L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (LAPP) and were fed for 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks. Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of catfish with initial body weight of 15.47± 0.59 g. After 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks, growth, serum concentration of AA, oxidative respiratory burst, lysozyme and natural hemolytic complement activities, myeloperoxidase (MPO) content and natural haemagglutination titre were measured. Ten numbers of fish in duplicate were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila to measure the level of protection against aeromoniasis at each one of the assayed times. The results showed that AA concentration in serum correlated positively with those in the diets and reached its saturation level after the time period directly proportional to the increase in dose level. Fish fed AA-supplemented diets showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher specific growth rate after 2 weeks of feeding. The superoxide production was enhanced after 8 weeks of feeding fish at a supplemented dose level of 2000 mg/kg. Similarly, MPO content, haemagglutination titre and alternative complement activity in serum enhanced with the increase of dietary AA levels at different duration of feeding. The lysozyme activity was not affected by the dietary AA treatment. On the other hand, feeding of AA at all concentrations significantly increased percent survival against A. hydrophila challenge after 4 weeks compared to control. The non-specific immune parameters as well as percent survival were enhanced as a result of high AA supply particularly at 500 mg/kg diet, although the increase was not maintained but returned to the initial levels after 4 weeks. These results support the possible use of AA as an immunostimulant at a dose of 500 mg/kg diet for a period of 4 weeks in catfish farming. (Mol Cell Biochem xxx: 25–33, 2005)  相似文献

Abstract

Biotin is involved in many vital metabolic pathways and must be provided for an efficient fermentation in the rumen, as well as for the intermediary metabolism of the host animal. Factors influencing ruminal biotin metabolism and output are widely unknown at present. Therefore, dairy cows fitted with permanent cannulas in the dorsal rumen and in the proximal duodenum were fed differently composed diets, and the biotin flow at the proximal duodenum was measured. The diets (on DM basis) consisted of 8.9 kg grass hay (Diet 1), 8.9 kg corn silage plus 2.0 kg concentrate (Diet 2), or 7.3 and 7.4 kg grass silage plus 10.0 kg concentrate (Diets 3 and 4). The concentrate in Diets 3 and 4 contained 87% wheat and corn grain, respectively. The cows were pre-fed the rations for 21 days. Thereafter duodenal digesta was sampled every two h for 5 days. Cr2O3 served as a flow marker and the microbial proportion of total nitrogen at the duodenum was estimated by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The duodenal flow of biotin was not related to biotin intake, but to the amount of fermented organic matter (FOM) and the amount of microbial protein (Biotin [mg/d] = 0.518 · kg FOM?0.300; r = 0.85 and biotin [mg/d] = 0.012 · g microbial protein + 1.478; r = 0.84), irrespective of the composition of the diet fed. Mean daily biotin flow was 0.48 ± 0.11 mg/kg FOM without any systematic effect of diet composition. The ruminal biotin balance, calculated as the difference between biotin flow at the duodenum and biotin intake, was positive (1.4 – 2.0 mg/d) in cows fed the mixed roughage/concentrate diets and negative (?0.71 mg/d) when the pure hay diet was fed.  相似文献

The study evaluated the effect of dietary doses of Euglena viridis on the immune response and disease resistance of Labeo rohita fingerlings against infection with the bacterial pathogen Aeromonas hydrophila. L. rohita fingerlings were fed with diet containing 0 (Control), 0.1 g, 0.5 g, 1.0 g Euglena powder kg−1 dry diet for 90 days. Biochemical (serum total protein, albumin, globulin, albumin:globulin ratio), haematological (WBC, RBC, haemoglobin content) and immunological (superoxide anion production, lysozyme, serum bactericidal activity) parameters of fish were examined after 30, 60 and 90 days of feeding. Fish were challenged with A. hydrophila 90 days post-feeding and mortalities were recorded over 10 days post-infection. The results demonstrate that fish fed with Euglena showed increased levels of superoxide anion production, lysozyme, serum bactericidal activity, serum protein and albumin (P < 0.05) compared with the control group. Following challenge with A. hydrophila less survivability was observed in the control group (56.65%) than the group fed the experimental diets. The group fed 0.5 g Euglena kg−1 dry diet showed the highest percentage survival (75%). These results indicate that Euglena stimulates the immunity and makes L. rohita more resistant to A. hydrophila infection.  相似文献

Adult apterousMyzus persicae, which had fed for 26 h on diet containing azadirachtin at concentrations of 25–100 ppm, produced nymphs at less than half the rate of aphids on control diets. After 50 h on azadirachtin-treated diets nymph production had virtually ceased. After this period, any nymphs produced by adults that had fed on azadirachtin-treated diets were born dead with undeveloped appendages. Honeydew production on azadirachtin-treated diets was unaffected during the first 26 h period but was approximately three times less than on control diets during the subsequent 24 h period.  相似文献

The African edible bush-cricket, Ruspolia differens (Serville) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae), is an economically valuable insect in sub-Saharan Africa. For its mass-rearing, suitable diets that can sustain its performance need to be identified. This study aimed at finding inflorescence diets of 10 host plant species and their mixtures that result in the highest R. differens production. We reared newly hatched nymphs to adults on inflorescences of single host species, and also on a gradient of five diversifying dietary mixtures consisting of one and mixtures of two, three, five, and seven host plant species. For the single host-plant diets, the developmental time was shortest on Pennisetum purpureum, Chloris gayana, and Brachiaria ruziziensis (approximately 63 days), whereas the fresh weight was highest on B. ruziziensis and P. purpureum (approximately 0.383 g). Survival was highest (>65%) on C. gayana, P. purpureum, B. ruziziensis, Setaria sphacelata, and Sporobolus pyramidalis, and lowest on Panicum maximum, Hyparrhenia rufa, Cynodon dactylon, and Paspalum scrobiculatum (<40%). With respect to diet mixtures, the developmental time was significantly shorter (on average 16 days shorter), and survival was higher, in the most diversified diets compared to the least diversified diets. The contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids and fatty acid composition did not differ significantly among the diets. However, the content of monounsaturated fatty acids differed significantly among the diets and there was a significant diet*sex interaction. From the applied point of view, based on our results, for maximal weight and survival plus fast development, we recommend rearing on P. purpureum, C. gayana, B. ruziziensis, and S. sphacelata, and on dietary mixtures of inflorescences. These findings are important in designing large-scale rearing programs for this species.  相似文献

Browsing ruminants have access to different biomass, depending on how high they can reach. Foliage consisting of leaves and green pods from Acacia senegal, Pterocarpus lucens and Guiera senegalensis, was collected according to height above ground accessible to either sheep (0.90 m), goats (1.65 m) or cattle (1.50 m). There was a significant variation in the chemical composition of the biomass between species. The crude protein (CP) content was 114, 157 and 217 g/kg dry matter (DM) and the neutral detergent fiber (aNDF) content 604, 534 and 412 g/kg DM for G. senegalensis, P. lucens and A. senegal, respectively. There was no significant variation in chemical composition according to the height accessible by cattle, sheep or goats. The voluntary intake was studied using eight goats per diet. The six diets consisted of the three browse leaves and two pods (A. senegal and P. lucens) and a control. The leaves were fed combined with hay of Schoenefeldia gracilis (maximum 30%) and the control was pure hay. Apparent digestibilities of the same diets, with the exception of G. senegalensis, were measured using five goats per diet. All browse fodders used in the feeding and digestibility trials were high in CP (105–170 g/kg DM) and lignin (164–234 g/kg DM except A. senegal leaves) and low in fiber (322–590 g/kg DM of NDF) compared to the hay (31 g/kg DM of CP and 755 g/kg DM of NDF). The highest intake was of the P. lucens diet (864 g) and the lowest of the G. senegalensis diet (397 g). The intake of pods from A. senegal was higher (1033 g) than from P. lucens pods (691 g). The apparent digestibility of OM and CP in the browse leaves was 0.63 and 0.57 and 0.63 and 0.64 for A. senegal and P. lucens, respectively, higher than for the hay, which showed higher digestibility of NDF. A. senegal pods had higher digestibility for all nutrients than P. lucens pods. Based on the high CP content and the intake and digestibility characteristics, P. lucens leaves and A. senegal leaves and pods can be recommended as protein supplements to low quality diets.  相似文献

The mirid bug Macrolophus caliginosus is commercially reared on eggs of Ephestia kuehniella, constituting an effective but expensive factitious food. Artificial diets can decrease the rearing costs of this natural enemy, but developing and evaluating an artificial diet is a very time-consuming activity. In the current study, development and reproduction of M. caliginosus on two artificial diets based on egg yolk were investigated. The artificial diets resulted in longer development and lower adult weights, but survival was comparable with that of control insects fed E. kuehniella eggs. Reproductive potential of the predator reared on factitious and artificial foods was assessed using a dissection method. The influence of nymphal food on fecundity was less important than that of adult food. Adults fed E. kuehniella eggs had a preoviposition period of about 4 days, whereas adults offered only plant material started laying eggs about 7 days after emergence. Ovarian scores at day 7 were higher for females fed E. kuehniella eggs than for those given access only to a tobacco leaf. Ovarian scores were not significantly affected by mating status. In a final test, a parallel comparison of two methods for assessing reproductive response to diet was made. Here, adult couples were offered one of four diets: E. kuehniella eggs, one of two artificial diets or no food. Half of the females were dissected and the other half was held for determining lifetime oviposition. Females fed E. kuehniella eggs had superior ovarian scores and laid more eggs than those fed either artificial diet or those given no extra food. A good correlation (r = 0.97) was obtained between ovarian scores and oviposition data, indicating that dissecting females after 1 week provides a reliable estimate of fecundity as affected by diet quality. Rapid reproductive assessments as used in the current study will help to increase the rate of development of artificial diets and may contribute to more cost effective production methods for augmentative biological control agents.  相似文献

To investigate the effects of different carbohydrate (CHO) levels in the diet of Wuchang bream Megalobrama amblycephala, the fish were randomly divided into six treatment groups. Five groups were fed 19, 25, 31, 38 and 47% CHO, respectively, for 8 weeks, and a control group was fed a diet with no CHO. Growth performance and feed utilization were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by the dietary carbohydrate level. Maximum weight gain and specific growth rate occurred at the 31% dietary carbohydrate level. Compared to the control, the 31% CHO group had a significantly increased serum total protein content, respiratory burst activity of leucocytes, serum complement 3 (C3) levels, serum lysozyme activity, serum alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity and hepatic total antioxidative capacity (T‐AOC), as well as a decrease in serum glutamic‐oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) activity. Compared to the control, the 47% CHO group had significantly increased serum GOT activity, and a tendency toward an increase in serum cortisol content and a decrease in serum lysozyme activity, hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and T‐AOC. The relative level of hepatic heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) mRNA in fish fed the 38% CHO diet was significantly higher than those of fish fed the 19, 25 and 31% CHO diets, respectively (P < 0.05). After challenge with Aeromonas hydrophila, fish fed the 47% CHO had the significantly lowest post‐challenge survival, and fish fed the 31% CHO had the significantly highest post‐challenge survival (P < 0.05). The results of this study suggest that ingestion of excessive dietary CHO can impact the non‐specific immune responses, decrease the hepatic antioxidant abilities, and thus affect the health status of M. amblycephala.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate the dietary lipid requirement and its effects on liver oxidative status and non-specific immune responses of juvenile grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Purified diets with five dietary lipid levels (0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%, fish oil/corn oil = 1:1) were each fed to triplicate groups of grass carp (mean initial weight: 6.57 ± 0.01 g) in a recirculating rearing system maintained at 27.5 ± 0.5 °C for 10 weeks. Percent weight gain was highest (P < 0.05) with 5% lipid and lowest in fish fed the lipid free control diet. Feed efficiency (FE) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) in fish followed the same pattern of percent weight gain. Fish fed with lipid containing diets had better non-specific immune response indexes (e.g. phagocytic activity, plasma peroxidase and lysozyme activity) and low-level of liver oxidation status than fish fed with the control diet. But excess dietary lipid supplement would bring over metabolic burden to liver. After the feeding trial, fish were challenged by Aeromonas hydrophila. Fish fed control diet obtained significantly (P < 0.05) lower survival rate. The survival rate was highest with 7.5% lipid. The results of this study indicated that proper dietary lipid supplementation enhanced the immune response of grass carp and improved the survival rate in the bacterial challenge, but excess dietary lipid may elevate liver oxidation rates of grass carp. Analysis by second-order regression of percent weight gain indicated that the optimal dietary lipid level in juvenile grass carp (6.6–35.5 g) is about 6.5%.  相似文献

Reducing dietary CP content is an effective approach to reduce animal nitrogen excretion and save protein feed resources. However, it is not clear how reducing dietary CP content affects the nutrient digestion and absorption in the gut of ruminants, therefore it is difficult to accurately determine how much reduction in dietary CP content is appropriate. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of reduced dietary CP content on N balance, intestinal nutrient digestion and absorption, and rumen microbiota in growing goats. To determine N balance, 18 growing wether goats (25.0 ± 0.5 kg) were randomly assigned to one of three diets: 13.0% (control), 11.5% and 10.0% CP. Another 18 growing wether goats (25.0 ± 0.5 kg) were surgically fitted with ruminal, proximate duodenal, and terminal ileal fistulae and were randomly assigned to one of the three diets to investigate intestinal amino acid (AA) absorption and rumen microbiota. The results showed that fecal and urinary N excretion of goats fed diets containing 11.5% and 10.0% CP were lower than those of goats fed the control diet (P < 0.05). When compared with goats fed the control diet, N retention was decreased and apparent N digestibility in the entire gastrointestinal tract was increased in goats fed the 10% CP diet (P < 0.05). When compared with goats fed the control diet, the duodenal flow of lysine, tryptophan and phenylalanine was decreased in goats fed the 11.5% CP diet (P < 0.05) and that of lysine, methionine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, leucine, glutamic acid, tyrosine, essential AAs (EAAs) and total AAs (TAAs) was decreased in goats fed the 10.0% CP diet (P < 0.05). When compared with goats fed the control diet, the apparent absorption of TAAs in the small intestine was increased in goats fed the 11.5% CP diet (P < 0.05) and that of isoleucine, serine, cysteine, EAAs, non-essential AAs, and TAAs in the small intestine was increased in goats fed the 10.0% CP diet (P < 0.05). When compared with goats fed the control diet, the relative richness of Bacteroidetes and Fibrobacteres was increased and that of Proteobacteria and Synergistetes was decreased in the rumen of goats fed a diet with 10.0% CP. In conclusion, reducing dietary CP content reduced N excretion and increased nutrient utilization by improving rumen fermentation, enhancing nutrient digestion and absorption, and altering rumen microbiota in growing goats.  相似文献

A single flow continuous culture fermenter system was used in this study to investigate the influence of dietary lipid supplements varying in their fatty acid content on the DNA concentration of selected rumen bacteria. Four continuous culture fermenters were used in a 4×4 Latin square design with four periods of 10 d each. Treatment diets were fed at 45 g/d (DM basis) in three equal portions during the day. The diets were: 1) control (CON), 2) control with animal fat source (SAT), 3) control with soybean oil (SBO), and 4) control with fish oil (FO). Lipid supplements were added at 3% of diet DM. The concentrations of total volatile fatty acids and acetate were not affected (P>0.05) by lipid supplements. Concentrations of propionate, iso-butyrate, valerate and iso-valerate were highest (P<0.05) with the FO diet compared with the other treatment diets. The concentration of til C18:l (vaccenic acid, VA) in effluents increased (P<0.05) with SBO and FO diets and was highest with the SBO diet. The concentrations of C18:0 in effluents were lowest (P<0.05) for the FO diet compared with the other treatment diets. Concentrations of DNA for Anaerovibrio lipolytica, and Butyrivibrio proteoclasticus in fermenters were similar (P>0.05) for all diets. The DNA concentrations of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens and Ruminococcus albus in fermenters were lowest (P<0.05) with the FO diet but were similar (P>0.05) among the other treatment diets. Selenomonas ruminantium DNA concentration in fermenters was highest (P<0.05) with the FO diet. In conclusion, SBO had no effect on bacterial DNA concentrations tested in this study and the VA accumulation in the rumen observed on the FO diet may be due in part to FO influence on B. fibrisolvens, R. albus, and S. ruminantium.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of different feeding regimes from 11 weeks of age to first parturition on feed intake, leptin, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and total protein serum levels, as well as productive performance in young rabbit does. In addition, body composition was estimated by bioimpedance analysis. Thirty-six 11-week-old does were randomly distributed in three groups. The AL-C group was fed ad libitum a control diet containing 350 g neutral detergent fibre (aNDFom)/kg, 11.6 MJ digestible energy (DE)/kg and 173 g crude protein (CP)/kg, and the does were inseminated at 16 weeks of age. The R-C group was fed 150 g/d of the same diet until 16 weeks of age, one week before artificial insemination (AI) at 17 weeks of age, and then fed ad libitum. The AL-F group was fed a diet containing 475 g aNDFom/kg, 9.4 MJ DE/kg and 174 g CP/kg ad libitum, and was inseminated at 17 weeks of age. During rearing (11-16 weeks), does in the R-C group had the lowest DE (1.54 MJ/d; P<0.003) and digestible protein (DP, 17.9 g/d; P<0.001) intake, as well as the lowest protein (172 g/kg; P<0.05) and energy (5.9 MJ/kg) body contents, leptin concentration at 16 weeks of age (2.48 ng/ml; P<0.001) and fertility (P<0.02) at first AI. Daily feed intake during pregnancy and lactation, as well as prolificacy and litter weight, were similar among groups. The highest percentage of body fat was observed for all the does when were inseminated for the first time (135 g/kg; P<0.001), consistent with the highest leptin (4.48 ng/ml; P<0.001) and total protein serum levels (6.87 g/dl; P<0.001) at this time. Serum NEFA level around parturition was higher (P<0.05) in groups AL-C and R-C (1.11 and 0.85 mmol/l) than in group AL-F (0.71 mmol/l), suggesting a lower lipid mobilization that tended to improve fertility rate for AL-F does on day 11 post-parturition (P<0.09). In conclusion, feed restriction during the rearing period delays reproductive development in young rabbits. In nulliparous does, ad libitum feeding during rearing with a high-fibre diet allows a similar productive performance to that of feeding with a less fibrous diet. Nevertheless, the use of high fibre diets during rearing does not affect feed intake throughout the first pregnancy and lactation.  相似文献

Microbiological and biochemical properties of three different liquid diets fermented at 10, 15 or 20 °C were studied. The liquid diets consisted of a cereal grain mix of wheat, barley and triticale, blended with whey (diet WH), wet wheat distillers’ grain (diet WDG) or water (diet WAT). The diets were fermented for 5 days without disturbance, followed by 14 days of daily feed replacements, where 4/5 of the contents were replaced with fresh feed mixtures. Starting pH values were 5.1, 3.9 and 6.3 in WH, WDG and WAT, respectively. For most diets, the pH decreased to approximately 4.0 by day 5. However, the WAT diet fermented at 10 °C required 7 days to reach a pH of 4.0. A higher (P<0.001) pH was seen in the WH diet fermented at 10 °C than in the other diets. Composition of the diets was determined during day 17–19 of fermentation to allow the microbial populations to stabilise and to reflect conditions in practice. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) grew in all diets during fermentation and the growth was affected by temperature and type of diet (P<0.001), and the interaction between these two factors (P<0.001). The highest LAB counts were found at higher temperatures in the WAT and WH diets and the lowest counts were found in diet WDG. The highest levels of acetic, succinic and propionic acids were found in diet WDG (P<0.001). Lactic acid concentrations increased with temperature (P<0.001) and were highest in the WAT and WH diets. In vitro digestibility of organic matter was highest for diet WH and lowest for diet WDG (P<0.001). Inositol hexaphosphate-bound phosphorus (P) and total P in the cereal grain mix were 2.2 and 3.7 g kg−1 dry matter, respectively. No inositol phosphate-bound P was found in any of the diets after fermentation. Some moulds, probably originating from spores in the cereal grain mix, were detected in the fermented diets, but total numbers did not increase with time. Enterobacteriaceae detected in diet WH, probably originated from the cereal grain mix and the whey. Yeasts were present in all diet ingredients. In conclusion, fermentation processes and biochemical properties differed greatly due to temperature, type of diet and the interaction of these two factors. Dietary inositol hexaphosphate was completely degraded in all fermented diets.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of dietary supplementation of probiotic Pedicoccus acidilactici and nucleotide (separately or combined) on growth performance, intestinal microbiota, hemato-immunological parameters, and immunity response in goldfish (Carassius auratus). Fish (average weight 5–6 g) were acclimatized and divided into eight experimental diets supplemented with P. acidilactici of different concentrations (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3% diet) and nucleotides (0 and 0.5% diet) for 6 months. Fish fed with experimental diets showed significant differences in terms of final weight, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, daily growth rate, and condition factor when compared to control diet (P < 0.05). Fish fed with probiotic (0.3%) separately and combined with nucleotide (0.5%) had highest RBC and WBC when compared to other diets (P < 0.05), while the highest values for Hb and Hct as well as total protein, glucose, albumin, and globulin were observed in probiotic (0.2%) and nucleotide (0.5%) combined diet. Serum lysozyme and anti-protease activities were significantly higher in probiotic (0.1 and 0.2%) and nucleotide (0.5%) combined diets. Similarly, these two diets combined showed the highest colonization of P. acidilactici when compared to other diets. In conclusion, combined dietary probiotic and nucleotide improve the growth performance, hemato-biochemical parameters, and intestine growth in C. auratus.  相似文献

The freshwater microalgae Ankistrodesmus falcatus and Scenedesmus incrassatulus, at three concentrations (6, 12 and 18 mg l−1 t, dry weight), were tested as diets for Daphnia magna cultured in reconstituted hard water, at 19 ± 1 °C. Effects on survival, and reproductive characteristics were evaluated during a complete life-cycle. Test animals fed with the highest food concentration had the lowest survival, longevity, number of clutches, and average inter-brood times, but the total offspring was similar to that obtained with the lowest food concentration, for the same species of alga. Average longevity ranged from 40 to 85 days, with a minimum of 24 and a maximum of 119 days. The average inter-brood time ranged from 4.2 to 5.8 days, the highest values being observed at the lowest food concentration. The average total offspring was maximum for the intermediate concentrations of both algae. The maximum number of clutches ranged from 9 to 23, with the lowest values being observed at the highest food concentration. Even though both microalgae had similar effects on survival and reproduction, and the greatest differences observed were related to food concentration, it seems that S. incrassalulus is a comparatively better food for D. magna. The most suitable food level should be determined prior to carrying out chronic bioassays, and it is also an important factor in cultures for obtaining neonates for toxicological tests.  相似文献

We examined the effect of larval and adult nutrition on worker honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) ovary development. Workers were fed high or low-pollen diets as larvae, and high or low-protein diets as adults. Workers fed low-protein diets at both life stages had the lowest levels of ovary development, followed by those fed high-protein diets as larvae and low- quality diets as adults, and then those fed diets poor in protein as larvae but high as adults. Workers fed high-protein diets at both life stages had the highest levels of ovary development. The increases in ovary development due to improved dietary protein in the larval and adult life stages were additive. Adult diet also had an effect on body mass. The results demonstrate that both carry-over of larval reserves and nutrients acquired in the adult life stage are important to ovary development in worker honey bees. Carry-over from larval development, however, appears to be less important to adult fecundity than is adult nutrition. Seasonal trends in worker ovary development and mass were examined throughout the brood rearing season. Worker ovary development was lowest in spring, highest in mid-summer, and intermediate in fall.  相似文献

Lake Huetzalin (Xochimilco) is a shallow waterbody in Mexico City with a dominance of the littoral cladocerans Simocephalus vetulus, Alona rectangula, and Pleuroxus aduncus. Here, we present data on the life table and population dynamics of these three cladoceran species on two types of diets (alga Scenedesmus acutus and detritus). We also analyzed the effect of competition on population growth using Scenedesmus, which proved to be the better diet than detritus. We hypothesize that feces of the larger cladoceran species (S. vetulus) could be a food source for the smaller taxa (A. rectangula and P. aduncus). Experiments were conducted in 100 ml beakers with 50 ml of medium in each at a temperature of 23 ± 1°C. We studied the demography of three test species using two food types with four replicates for each treatment in the life table experiments. Based on the data thus obtained we further studied the competition between the cladocerans on a diet of Scenedesmus. The maximal growth rates obtained for P. aduncus, S. vetulus, and A. rectangula fed Scenedesmus acutus were: 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 d−1, respectively. Among the test species, S. vetulus had the highest survivorship of 77 days when cultured on detritus and P. aduncus the lowest of 20 days on Scenedesmus. The gross reproductive rate (offspring female−1 lifespan−1) ranged from 6 neonates in Pleuroxus to 160 in Simocephalus per female. From the competition experiments conducted using alga as the diet, we observed that A. rectangula and, especially P. aduncus, had higher growth rates in the presence of S. vetulus than in the controls. This facilitation could be one of the reasons for higher species diversity in the littoral of water bodies.  相似文献

Aims: In the United States, carbadox and copper sulfate are growth promoters commonly used in combination in nursery swine diets. Our aim was to determine how selected dietary additives affect selected bacterial populations and pathogens in nursery swine, and compare to larch extract, which contains potential antibacterial activities. Methods and Results: Piglets were weaned and sorted into one of the four treatments: (i) basal diet without antimicrobials; (ii) basal diet with carbadox + copper sulfate; (iii) basal diet + 1000 ppm larch extract; or (iv) basal diet + 2000 ppm larch extract. Diets were fed for a 4‐week period after weaning. In both trials, the carbadox + copper sulfate group consumed more feed over the 4‐week period relative to the other three diet groups (P < 0·05), but did not gain significantly more weight. Faecal shedding of Salmonella spp. was not affected by dietary supplement in either trial, but faecal shedding of Campylobacter spp. was the lowest for the carbadox + copper sulfate diet. In faecal samples collected at the end of each trial, Lactobacillus spp. cell counts for the basal and larch extract diets were nearly 1·0 log10 g?1 faeces greater (P < 0·05) than the carbadox + copper sulfate group, whereas the coliforms and Escherichia coli were nearly 1·0 log10 g?1 faeces lower (P < 0·05). Conclusions: Compared to basal fed animals, supplementation with carbadox + copper sulfate significantly altered faecal E. coli, coliform bacteria and Lactobacillus spp. Larch extract has no benefit up to 0·2% of diet in regard to pathogen shedding, whereas carbadox + copper sulfate decreased faecal shedding of Campylobacter spp. Significance and Impact of the Study: Current swine management practices in the United States may be beneficial to managing Campylobacter spp. shedding in nursery swine, but also result in significant changes in the resident gastrointestinal microflora.  相似文献
