The impact of a drought on freshwater snail and trematode communities was investigated in a lake. Before the drought, 15 gastropod species (Valvatidae, Planorbidae, Lymnaeidae, Ancylidae, Physidae) and 10 trematode species (cercariaeum, xiphidiocercariae, echinostome, furcocercariae, notocotyle, lophocercous) were recorded. The rate of parasitism was 5.13% and there were 11 host species. The 2 major consequences of desiccation were the disappearance of snails, except Valvata piscinalis and Lymnaea peregra, and the absence of trematodes infecting the surviving snails. As soon as favourable conditions were restored, the littoral area was recolonized, first by hygrophilic and amphibious species, second by aquatic species. Nine months after the drought, the gastropod community was restored. Recolonization by the trematodes was delayed compared with that of gastropods. During the study, the overall prevalence was equal to 0.36% and only 4 trematode species and 5 host species were recorded. Because of the great variability of freshwater ecosystems, long-term studies are necessary to understand the dynamics of snail and trematode populations and determine the regulatory effect of parasitism in the field.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of disturbance frequency on diatom communities established on artificial substrates within an open canopy site and a closed canopy site of a 3rd order stream. The open canopy site (OCS) had a total of 80 diatom taxa colonizing the substrates, while the closed canopy site (CCS) had only 55 taxa. Cluster analysis revealed that the two sites had distinct diatom communities, although the most common species were similar between sites. There was no effect of disturbance frequency on species diversity (H') at OCS, however species diversity significantly decreased as disturbance frequency increased at CCS. At OCS, Amphora perpusilla increased in abundance as disturbance frequency increased, while Navicula lanceolata abundance decreased as disturbance increased. At CCS, Cocconeis placentula v. euglypta remained dominant regardless of disturbance frequency. The results suggest that some diatom species may be shade adapted, which may explain the site-specific responses. In addition, diatom growth-forms may explain the within site taxon-specific responses to disturbance. For example, Achnanthes sp. and Cocconeis sp., small horizontal forms, were predominant on the high disturbance substrates. Vertical or large horizontal forms may be mechanically removed by frequent physical disturbance allowing such small horizontal forms to become abundant. Frequent disturbance, by maintaining the community in an early stage of development, directly influences the diatom assemblage on rocks in streams.  相似文献

The effects of disturbance on communities have been a focus of both theoretical and empirical inquiries for many years. Food web stability is hypothesized to be affected by disturbance and the nature of the energy pathways (i.e. allochthonous or autochthonous) of a community. In this study, we investigated whether food webs at paired sites, one in forest and the other in grassland, in ten New Zealand streams along a disturbance gradient differ in their topological structure and robustness. Food web robustness (an indicator of web resistance) assesses the ease with which secondary extinctions permeate the food web following an initial random extinction (disturbance). We found that neither the nature of the energy source nor physical disturbance affected structural metrics or web robustness. As stream systems, particularly in New Zealand, are exposed to regular, unpredictable and dramatic physical disturbance from flooding, it may simply be that the floods result in generalist species dominating and increasing robustness irrespective of the energy source.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed in an upland stream to determine the effects of the frequency of physical disturbance on the relationship between an abundant glossosomatid trichopteran (Agapetus monticolus; Banks) and the epilithon upon which it feeds. Artificial cobbles with an established epilithic community were tumbled either every 1, 2 or 4 weeks. The first experiment failed to detect any significant effects of rock tumbling on the abundance of A. monticolus or the epilithon: a result due to several spates. The first experiment did reveal that disturbances may disrupt the ability of A. monticolus to locate patches of abundant food. The second experiment found that although the abundance of A. monticolus was not affected by the disturbances, periphyton abundance was significantly reduced. Increasing the frequency of disturbance did not magnify this effect. Comparisons of these results with other studies of disturbance in streams indicate that the effects of disturbance on herbivory may be highly variable. A variety of factors, such as the relative resistances of the herbivores and the epilithon, need to be examined before the effects of disturbances on lotic herbivorous interactions can be completely understood.  相似文献

The recovery of benthic macroinvertebrates after disturbance from stream rehabilitation was studied in the River Livojoki, northern Finland. The stream that had been channelized for log transport was rehabilitated on 1 July 1992 by digging holes and inserting boulders. We measured habitat characteristics and sampled benthic animals before and after rehabilitation, including an unrehabilitated control site. The immediate effect of rehabilitation was a slight decrease in the abundances of benthic insects. Recolonization occurred rapidly, within 10 days. Disturbance of the rehabilitation did not have a detectable effect on the macroinvertebrate community. Most species-level changes and community patterns reflected seasonal life history events. Timing of such rehabilitation work can be critical for the recovery rate, which depends on the colonization abilities of the species present after disturbance. We suggest that many disturbances (including minor floods and moderate rehabilitation procedures) may have only small, short-term effects on benthic communities. We emphasize the importance of considering seasonality in studies of disturbance in streams.  相似文献

The sizes, maturity stages and biomass of mayfly species colonizing disturbed patches on the stream bed surface of the Naro Moru River, Kenya, were determined from June 1993 to January 1994. All maturity stages I–VI+ were present in the pre-disturbance mayfly assemblages. Colonization of the disturbed patches by mayflies of different maturity stages was continuous, but slow or fast depending on the season and species. The overall post-disturbance maturity structure of the mayflies colonizing the disturbed patches did not demonstrate any distinct pattern. The majority of Caenis nymphs colonizing the patches in wet season II (November–January) were in emerging maturity stage VI+, whilst the majority of the individuals of Afronurus and Choroterpes ( Euthraulus ) populations matured from stage I in the wet seasons to stage VI+ in the dry season. Furthermore, the majority of the individuals of Baetis ( Nigrobaetis ) sp.1 were maturing to stages IV–VI during the wet seasons. Small-sized mayfly individuals (body length <3.0 mm) of all mayflies colonized the disturbed patches in the majority of numbers. However, although having the highest densities, they contributed a very low biomass compared with the fewer large-sized nymphs. There was no size gradation in the colonization of the disturbed patches, since all sizes were sampled at all times but in differing proportions. Colonization of the patches by mayflies was not size- or maturity stage-specific. Size distribution patterns could be useful in assessing which mayfly size-spectra are more or less susceptible to disturbance in streams.  相似文献

1. Temperature and oxygen are recognised as the main drivers of altitudinal limits of species distributions. However, the two factors are linked, and both decrease with altitude, why their effects are difficult to disentangle. 2. This was experimentally addressed using aquatic macroinvertebrates; larvae of Andesiops (Ephemeroptera), Claudioperla, (Plecoptera), Scirtes (Coleoptera) and Anomalocosmoecus (Trichoptera), and the amphipod Hyalella in an Ecuadorian glacier‐fed stream (4100–4500 m a.s.l.). The following were performed: (i) quantitative benthic sampling at three sites to determine altitudinal patterns in population densities, (ii) transplants of the five taxa upstream of their natural altitudinal limit to test the short‐term (14 days) effect on survival, and (iii) in situ experiments of locomotory activity as a proxy for animal response to relatively small differences in temperature (5 °C vs. 10 °C) and oxygen saturation (55% vs. 62%). 3. The transplant experiment reduced survival to a varying degree among taxa, but Claudioperla survived well at a site where it did not naturally occur. In the in situ experiment, Scirtes and Hyalella decreased their activity at lower oxygen saturation, whereas Andesiops and Anomalocosmoecus did so at a low temperature. The decrease in activity from a high to a low temperature and oxygen for the five taxa was significantly correlated with their mortality in the transplant experiment. 4. Together the present experiments indicate that even relatively small differences in temperature and oxygen may produce effects explaining ecological patterns, and depending on the taxon, either water temperature or oxygen saturation, without clear interacting effects, are important drivers of altitudinal limits.  相似文献

Nine pools were studied in an intermittent stream. They were close to each other but differed in size, substratum, amount of shade and duration of water presence. Initial conditions were set by wet season flooding, following which each pool developed its own character. Cluster analysis showed that communities changed substantially with time in both species composition and abundance, and that some initially similar communities diverged while some initially dissimilar ones converged.Principal Components Analysis showed that these community changes were due largely to the drying of the pools, and to seasonal effects. Specialised drying communities developed in the pools of longer duration (up to 8 months), but not in the short-lived pools (3–4 months). Apparently similar numerical responses in different pools were often caused by different suites of predominant species. The diversity of the fauna (total of 78 species) was high in comparison with similar habitats in non-tropical regions. The pattern of development of the pools' communities was much as expected from island biogeography theory, except that there was no relationship between species richness and duration and size of pools. The species complements were largely opportunistic, being governed by extreme environmental disturbance.  相似文献

Aims Epiphytes are an abundant and diverse component of many wet temperate forests and have significant roles in ecosystem processes. Little is known about the processes and rates of their death and decomposition when they fall from the canopy, which limits our understanding of their role in forest carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling. In the temperate rainforest of the Quinault River Valley, Washington State, our aim was to test hypotheses regarding four elements of disturbance that might contribute to their decline.  相似文献

Water samples were collected from three sites located in the middle reach of the Njoro River, Kenya, and analysed for total phosphorus (TP), orthophosphate, ammonia‐nitrogen, and nitrate‐nitrogen to evaluate stressor sources (e.g. factories and wastewater ponds) and the general stream water quality. The stream surface water was also analysed for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) to provide an overview of organic matter loading. Mugo, Egerton Bridge and the canning factory sites of the Njoro River had low water quality which is likely to be due to poor farming, partially treated effluents and poor provision of sanitation facilities to the riparian communities. The concentrations of the selected nutrients did not differ significantly among the three sites, presumably due to pollution of the whole stream reach by the catchment nutrient sources. High phosphate concentrations (i.e. ~0.76 mgPO4 l?1 and ~0.87 mgTP l?1) at Canning Factory were recorded during the low flow dry season. Nitrate‐nitrogen concentrations varied significantly with water discharge which explained between 63 and 87% of the nutrient variability in the three sites. BOD5 differed significantly among the three sites, with historical effects of wastewater and factory effluent discharge being reflected in the results of Egerton Bridge and Canning Factory. The concentrations of ammonia‐nitrogen, TP and orthophosphate were higher in the wastewater than in the river water whereas nitrate‐nitrogen was lower. This study indicates that the Njoro River is stressed by nutrients from the activities within its catchment. With the increasing population, the nutrient load to the river will continue to increase and the water quality will continue to deteriorate. Reductions of nutrient loads into the river as well as provision of sanitation facilities to the riparian communities are needed to control further water degradation.  相似文献

Year-round collections of mayflies (Ephemeroptera) from a Colorado mountain stream allowed critical examination of several methods of calculating production for species with different life cycles. Five of the six numerically dominant species exhibited slow seasonal, univoltine life cycles. Baetis tricaudatus was bivoltine. Two species demonstrated well synchronized development, three species were poorly synchronized and a sixth was intermediate. Mean density and biomass data from each sampling date were used to ascertain the goodness-of-fit of each species to the Allen curve. It is proposed that such information can provide quantitative criteria for identifying species with well synchronized development and thereby determine when it is appropriate to directly apply cohort methods while avoiding time intensive body size (e.g. head width) measurements necessary for size-frequency analyses. In addition, these data demonstrate that species specific production varies with gross changes in elevation.  相似文献

We investigated temporal dynamics of secondary production and trophic basis for four dominant mayfly species in a second-order river of the Hanjiang River basin in Middle China from June 2003 to June 2004. The secondary production of the dominant four mayfly species, comprising nearly 90% of the total density of mayflies, was 14.45 g m−2  per year for Ephemera sp., 9.15 g m−2  per year for E. sinensis, 7.23 g m−2  per year for Leptophlebia sp. and 1.55 g m−2 per year for C. nigropunctata. C. nigropunctata and Ephemera sp. had most of their production in winter (from January to March), while E. sinensis and Leptophlebia sp. produced in two intervals, from June to September (summer) and from December of the first year to March of the next year (winter). Overlap in temporal distribution of production among the four mayflies was generally high (>0.60), especially those of C. nigropunctata, Ephemera sp. and Leptophlebia sp. Overlap of Leptophlebia sp. and Ephemera sp. was >0.85. Patterns of the four food types (amorphous detritus, vascular plant detritus, fungi, and diatoms) for each mayfly varied significantly (P < 0.01) over time, and patterns of food ingestion between the four mayflies were also significantly different (P < 0.05–0.01). Among the four main food types, all mayflies used amorphous detritus the most, which constituted 53–96% of their diets and contributed 54–97% to their production. Thus, temporal changes in the food web for mayflies in Heizhuchong stream are quantitative rather than qualitative.  相似文献

Freshwater shrimp dominate the faunal biomass of many headwater tropical streams: however, their role in community organization is unclear. Enclosure/exclosure experiments in a montane Puerto Rican stream examined direct and indirect effects of two dominant taxa of atyid (Atyidae) shrimp, Atya lanipes Holthuis and Xiphocaris elongata Guerin-Meneville. Both shrimp taxa caused significant reductions in sediment cover on rock substrata, reducing sedimentation and enhancing algal biovolume on clay tiles in cages. When tiles incubated in shrimp exclosures for 2 wks were placed outside of cages, atyid shrimp removed 100% of the sediment cover within a 30 min observation period. Atyid shrimp appear to play an important role in stream recovery after high discharge events by rapidly removing sediments and detritus deposited on benthic substrata in pools. We evaluated the mechanism by which A. lanipes influences algae and benthic insects by comparing patterns of algal biomass, taxonomic composition, and insect abundance between shrimp-exclusion and shrimp-presence treatments both with and without manual sediment removal. The shrimp exclusion treatment without manual sediment removal bad significantly lower algal biomass and greater sedimentation than all other treatments. The treatment in which shrimp were excluded but sediment was manually removed, however, accrued almost the same algal biovolume as the shrimp enclosure treatment, supporting the hypothesis that sediment removal enhances the biovolume of understory algal taxa. Algal community composition was similar between stream bottom bedrock exposed to natural densities of shrimp and all experimental treatments for both Atya and Xiphocaris: a diatom community strongly dominated (78–95%) by the adnate taxon, Achnanthes lanceolata Breb ex. Kutz. Atyid shrimp are important in determining the distribution and abundance of benthic insects through both direct and indirect effects. Sessile, retreat-building chironomid larvae (Chironomidae: Diptera) are negatively affected by both A. lanipes and X. elongata, through direct removal by foraging activities and/or indirectly through depression of sediment resources available to larvae for the construction of retreats. In constrast, the mobile grazer, Cloeodes maculipes (Baetidae: Ephemeroptera) was not adversely affected and atyid shrimp have the potential to exert positive indirect effects on this taxon by facilitating its exploitation of algal resources and/or through enhancement of understory algal food resources through sediment removal.  相似文献

1. Crayfish are among the most threatened taxa in the world and invasive crayfish are the primary cause of the decline of native crayfish. Most research has emphasised biotic interactions as the mechanism by which native crayfish are displaced by invasives, although crayfish occupy variable environments and the role of disturbance in facilitating crayfish invasion and displacement is understudied. 2. We compared tolerance to a disturbance, stream drying, in a native and invasive crayfish as a potential mechanism to explain their distribution. Our experiments and observations were conducted across scales, from laboratory environmental chambers to stream mesocosms to field sampling. We hypothesised that the invasive crayfish would be more tolerant of desiccation than the native, and that this physiological distinction between the two would be reflected in their distribution in relation to stream drying. 3. In the laboratory, the native crayfish Orconectes eupunctus was less tolerant of desiccation than the invasive Orconectes neglectus chaenodactylus, with all native crayfish dying within 2 days without water, while some of the invasive crayfish survived for nearly 2 weeks. Under simulated stream drying in mesocosms, only the native O. eupunctus survived less well than in a control. Field sampling demonstrated a significant negative relationship between O. eupunctus density and low summer flows, while O. neglectus density was positively associated with low summer flows. The greater resistance of O. neglectus to drying could, through priority effects, inhibit recolonisation by O. eupunctus once flow resumes. 4. Abiotic disturbances are potentially important to the displacement of native by invasive crayfish. Disturbance mediated displacement of aquatic species provides both an opportunity to conserve native species by maintaining or restoring habitat and disturbance regimes and is also a challenge due to increasing human water demand, flow regime alteration and global climate change.  相似文献

Limnological observations of an intermittent tropical dry forest stream   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
This study examines aspects of the seasonal limnology of an intermittent stream in the dry forest region of northwest Costa Rica. It focuses on annual water level fluctuations and both seasonal and among pool variation in dissolved oxygen concentration and water temperature. Dry season pools differed in morphometry and the rate of decline in water levels subsequent to the seasonal floods. Rate of water level decline was related both to pool depth and to the exposure of the pool to the sun. Oxygen concentration was generally low in the dry season, but increased during the rainy season in association with rain events and seasonal flooding. A repeated-measures analysis of variance indicated that seasonal effects accounted for 40% of the variance in oxygen concentration for residual pools. Differences among pools were also significant. However, there was strong evidence for a significant interaction between seasonal and spatial influences on oxygen values in the system. Variation in water temperature was small, but differences among pools, sampling dates, and their interaction were all significant. Periphyton production increased significantly between the late wet season sample in November and the dry season sample in February. Incident light intensity explained 76% of the variation among pools in net periphyton production in the dry season.  相似文献

The River Todasana is a small rain tropical forest stream emptying to the Caribbean Sea (Venezuela). Fish were sampled by electrofishing at three contiguous sites (pool, riffle, raceway). Nine species were recorded. Their mean biomass and production were: 43.72 kg ha−1 and 36.94 kg ha−1 yr−1, maximum: 55.47 kg ha−1 and 42.33 kg ha−1 yr−1, respectively.  相似文献

The aim was to assess patterns of plant diversity in response to elevation and disturbance in a tropical mountain. The study area was located in north‐central portion of the Eastern Cordillera of the Ecuadorian Andes, on a road from 1,150 m a.s.l. (Osayacu) to 4,000 (Papallacta). Along a mountain road spanning a wide altitudinal gradient, at 20 elevations we sampled three plots: one at the roadside and two perpendicular to the roadside. The relationship between elevation and species richness was assessed using linear and quadratic regressions, the effect of disturbance on species richness was determined by ANCOVA and a t test with parameters obtained from quadratic equations. Similarity of species composition among the roadside and sites distant was evaluated with the Chao‐Jaccard and classic Jaccard similarity indices, the distribution of non‐native species according to their origin were analyzed with linear and quadratic regression. The native species showed a linearly monotonic decrease with elevation, whereas non‐natives showed a quadratic distribution. Disturbed areas had the greatest number of non‐native species and lower native species richness, showing also a high floristic similarity; less disturbed areas showed the opposite. The non‐native species of temperate origin were more numerous and showed unimodal elevational distribution, while species of tropical origin were few and decreased linearly with elevation. We conclude that in a tropical highland mountain range, native and non‐native plant species respond differently to elevation: native species exhibit a monotonically linear decrease, and non‐native species show a unimodal trend. Disturbance positively affects non‐native species showing higher richness and fewer species turnover. In addition, the non‐native species are located along of the elevational gradient in relation to their biogeographic origin.  相似文献

This study examined the impact of physical disturbance from long-established road culverts on stream macroinvertebrate communities. Three streams within a 6 km section of highway on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada, were sampled. Streams had the entire upstream watershed and at least 100 m downstream of the road with natural boreal forest/barren vegetation and all had, within the sampled reaches, similar physical streambed characteristics. The fauna on stones from riffles was sampled at two upstream and three downstream sites, i.e., from 50 m above to about 100 m below the road in each stream. A total of 33 taxa were identified among the streams, with differences limited to a few rare taxa. The sample site communities did not significantly differ from each other with respect to the taxa present. Total macroinvertebrate abundance by site, for combined data of all streams, indicated the site at the exit of culvert plunge pool (site 3) had significantly elevated abundances. Analysis of individual taxa showed this was primarily due to very high numbers of Simulium spp. The other most notable changes were a decrease in numbers of Hydropsyche spp. and Elmidae below the road. The abundances of the remaining taxa were more variable among all sites. The study indicated that long-standing point source physical disturbance primarily impacted taxa abundance rather than community present/absent data, which will recolonize the disturbed zone by downstream drift. The differences in abundance are probably the result of the cleaning of substrate by abrasion, movement of substrate and reduction of detritus during each spate. Handling editor: D. Dudgeon  相似文献
