This paper follows the trajectory of sex steroids in 1930s Germany as a way to investigate the system of research which characterized the development of these drugs. Analyzing the changing relationship between the pharmaceutical company Schering and the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute für Biochemie headed by Nobel Prize winner Adolf Butenandt, the paper highlights the circulation of materials, information and money as much as the role of patents in shaping the study of sex steroids. Semi-synthetic analogs and metabolic pathways thus emerged as shared bio-industrial assets. This collaborative work participated in a more general 'internalization' of biology, which took place in pharmaceutical firms during the 1920s and 1930s as a strategy to standardize and develop biologicals. The construction of the hormone market was also based on Schering's collaboration with a selected group of clinicians who worked out the wide-range of indications associated with these 'natural' drugs. The paper finally shows how the wartime scientific and industrial mobilization in Nazi Germany marginalized the study of sex steroids and led to the dismantling of the KWIB-Schering network.  相似文献

This contribution questions the positive/negative eugenics dichotomy that typifies the historiography on the eugenic movement in the Netherlands and the claim that this movement was mostly marginal because only positive eugenics was pursued. From 1938 to 1968 in the Netherlands, after a decade of debates, 400 sex offenders who had been committed to asylums for the criminally insane were ‘voluntarily’ and ‘therapeutically’ castrated. For political reasons debates on castration, meant to create consensus, eliminated any reference to or connotation with eugenics, yet these policies were unthinkable without them. This article shows that thinking about social and sexual problems and their solutions in the 1930s were permeated by eugenic folklore which in turn was informed by sexual folklore. Both eugenic and sexual lore, as common sense, or as ways of knowing, were about individual and collective loss of self control which was referred to with a catch-all phrase: ‘hypersexuality’. Although sexual classifications used in diagnosing sex offenders suggested the existence of discrete sexual categories, homosexuality for instance was not seen as a sexual alternative or as an identity but as the extent to which an offender suffered from a form of hypersexuality that threatened the fabric of society.  相似文献

Two aspects of mating effects on the fecundity, sex ratio and longevity of Neoseiulus cucumeris (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were examined in laboratory experiments: (1) females mated by one, two or three different males (unmated and 3 days old) at 5-day intervals, and (2) females mated by males with different age/mating status (number of females mated previously by the male). Females allowed to mate with a second or third male at 5-day intervals produced 39 eggs on average, but those mated with a single male produced 28 eggs on average. Matings with additional males 5 or 10 days after the first male increased the duration of the oviposition period of these females by 5–7 days and at the same time reduced the post-oviposition period by about 10 days. Overall, females with additional matings by one or two different males at 5-day intervals survived a few days shorter than females without additional males. Mating with a different female each day, a male of N. cucumeris could mate with 5–8 females, which produced a total of 85–116 eggs: females mated with a male during days 1 and 2 in its adulthood and with a male of the last 2 days of life (days 7 and 8) produced about half as many eggs as females mated with a male during 3–6 days of its adulthood. Females mated with males that are too young or too old had a shorter oviposition period and a longer post-oviposition period and longevity than females mated with middle-aged males. In both experiments, rates of oviposition remained similar in females with high or low fecundity. This indicates that in both cases, the increased fecundity is due to the extension of the oviposition period through additional sperm supplied by the second male and or third male (in experiment 1) or more sperm by males not too young nor too old (experiment 2).  相似文献

An analogue of the human granulocyte–macrophage colony‐stimulating factor (hGM‐CSF), hGM‐CSF(13–27)–Gly–(75–87) was synthesized by solid phase methodology. This analogue was designed to comprise helices A and C of the native growth factor, linked by a glycine bridge. Helices A and C form half of a four‐helix bundle motif in the crystal structure of the native factor and are involved in the interaction with α‐ and β‐chains of the heterodimeric receptor. A conformational analysis of the synthetic analogue by CD, two‐dimensional nmr spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics calculations is reported. The analogue is in a random structure in water and assumes a partially α‐helical conformation in a 1 : 1 trifluoroethanol/water mixture. The helix content in this medium is ∼ 70%. By 2D‐nmr spectroscopy, two helical segments were identified in the sequences corresponding to helices A and C. In addition to medium‐ and short‐range NOESY connectivities, a long‐range cross peak was found between the Cβ proton of Val16 and NH proton of His87 (using the numbering of the native protein). Experimentally derived interproton distances were used as restraints in molecular dynamics calculations, utilizing the x‐ray coordinates as the initial structure. The final structure is characterized by two helical segments in close spatial proximity, connected by a loop region. This structure is similar to that of the corresponding domain in the x‐ray structure of the native growth factor in which helices A and C are oriented in an antiparallel fashion. The N‐terminal residues Gly–Pro of helix C are involved in an irregular turn connecting the two helical segments. As a consequence, helix C is appreciably shifted and slightly rotated with respect to helix A compared to the x‐ray structure of the native growth factor. These small differences in the topology of the two helices could explain the lower biological activity of this analogue with respect to that of the native growth factor. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The reproductive biology of two species of endemic Southern Ocean octopods was investigated around the sub-Antarctic islands of South Georgia and Shag Rocks. The females of both the species produce few, large eggs. This appears to be governed by phylogenetic constraint. No evidence was found for ontogenetic migration or seasonality associated with gonad maturation. Based on oocyte length frequency distributions and observations of oocyte development within the ovary, it is possible that both species could have either a single or multiple-batch spawning strategy. Pareledone turqueti ovaries contained fewer larger oocytes than those of Adelieledone polymorpha, which may help to reduce competition for resources immediately after hatching.  相似文献

We compare blood pressure and hypertension between adult men on the USA mainland and in Puerto Rico born during 1886-1930 to test hypotheses about the link between cardiovascular health and large socioeconomic and political changes in society: (a) 8853 men surveyed in Puerto Rico in 1965 and (b) 1449 non-Hispanic White men surveyed on the mainland during 1971-1975. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure and hypertension were regressed separately on demographic and socioeconomic variables and cardiovascular risk factors. Mainland men not taking anti-hypertensive medication showed statistically significant improvements in systolic blood pressure and hypertension at the beginning of the century and men in Puerto Rico showed improvements in diastolic blood pressure but only during the last two quinquenniums. An average man born on the mainland during the last birth quinquennium (1926-1930) had 7.4-8.7 mmHg lower systolic blood pressure and was 61% less likely to have systolic hypertension than one born before 1901. On average Puerto Rican men born during 1921-1925 had approximately 1.7 mmHg lower diastolic blood pressure than men born before 1901. Analyses of secular trends in cardiovascular health complements analyses of secular trends in anthropometric indicators and together provide a fuller view of the changing health status of a population.  相似文献

The smalltooth sandtiger shark, Odontaspis ferox, has a cosmopolitan distribution across warm temperate and tropical waters, and although essentially demersal, it has also been captured pelagically in mid-ocean. The species often occurs inshore at steeply shelving coastal and insular locations, and has now been identified by divers at eight widely separated shallow water sites. In the Southern Hemisphere, most O. ferox were caught by trawl on the continental slope, where its bathic range was extended to at least 880 m. Large specimens (>200 cm TL) were found across the whole depth range, but almost all juveniles were caught between 200 and 600 m. The largest recorded male was 344 cm TL, and female 450 cm TL. The few biological data suggest that size at maturity for males is around 200–250 cm TL, and for females 300–350 cm. No pregnant females were recorded but size at birth is probably about 100 cm TL. Nowhere has the species been found in large numbers. Survey and commercial catch data from south-east Australian trawl grounds suggest that numbers of O. ferox there have declined since the advent of deepwater commercial trawling in the 1970s. In areas of steep untrawlable terrain, increased gill-netting and longlining are likely to impact on local populations, with mature individuals being particularly vulnerable. Although O. ferox is not specifically targeted by commercial fishing activities, its likely very low fecundity make it susceptible to local extirpation, even at seemingly small capture rates. This species is protected off New South Wales and is considered “vulnerable” globally, by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

The sand-bubbler crab Dotilla fenestrata (Hilgendorf, 1869) is the most common and abundant brachyuran in the intertidal area of many East African sandy shores. Monthly sampling surveys were performed from March 2001 to February 2002 at Praia do Triunfo, Southern Mozambique. At each sampling survey, 15 stations (0.25 m2) were sampled to a depth sediment of 30 cm. Crabs were identified, sexed, and measured for carapace width (mm). A total of 2456 crabs were collected of which 1247 were males (mean ± sd: 5.36 ± 0.04 mm), 938 non-ovigerous females (5.03 ± 0.03 mm) and 271 ovigerous females (5.15 ± 0.06 mm). The overall size frequency distribution showed a unimodal pattern suggesting a stable population with continuous recruitment. A clear sexual dimorphism was observed, with males being larger than ovigerous females, which in turn, were larger than non-ovigerous females. The overall sex ratio did not differ from 1:1. The annual reproductive cycle of Dotilla fenestrata was continuous and ovigerous females were recorded throughout the year, with peaks of occurrence during the warmer months (February–August). Despite of this continuous cycle, few juveniles were observed during the study period. These observations and the maximum size attained by adults supports the hypothesis that for this burrowing crab, recruitment may occur in different habitat than that occupied by adults. However, the studied area is favourable for growth, since the analysed population attains sexual maturity in smaller sizes than that from close areas.  相似文献

SPARC is a multifunctional glycoprotein that belongs to the matricellular group of proteins. It modulates cellular interaction with the extracellular matrix (ECM) by its binding to structural matrix proteins, such as collagen and vitronectin, and by its abrogation of focal adhesions, features contributing to a counteradhesive effect on cells. SPARC inhibits cellular proliferation by an arrest of cells in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. It also regulates the activity of growth factors, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The expression of SPARC in adult animals is limited largely to remodeling tissue, such as bone, gut mucosa, and healing wounds, and it is prominent in tumors and in disorders associated with fibrosis. The crystal structure of two of the three domains of the protein has revealed a novel follistatin-like module and an extracellular calcium-binding (EC) module containing two EF-hand motifs. The follistatin-like module and the EC module are shared by at least four other proteins that comprise a family of SPARC-related genes. Targeted disruption of the SPARC locus in mice has shown that SPARC is important for lens transparency, as SPARC-null mice develop cataracts shortly after birth. SPARC is a prototypical matricellular protein that functions to regulate cell–matrix interactions and thereby influences many important physiological and pathological processes.  相似文献

The phylogeny of the genus Cynanchum s. str. is studied using cpDNA spacers and ITS. Morphological, anatomical and latex triterpenoid data are interpreted in light of the molecular results, and discrepancies are discussed. Vegetative characters are better indicators of relationship than floral characters, especially corona characters. The monophyly of all Malagasy species and, nested within the latter, of all stem-succulent taxa is ascertained and the genera Folotsia, Karimbolea, Platykeleba and Sarcostemma are subsumed under Cynanchum. One African species, C. galgalense, is excluded from Cynanchum.  相似文献

Occasional pesticide application in integrated pest management to at least part of a crop requires that any biological control agents must re-invade previously sprayed areas in order that resurgent pests can be constrained. The ability of the phytoseiid predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis to feed on adult two-spotted spider mite (TSSM) Tetranychus urticae on excised leaf discs in both control conditions and in a treatment with a sub lethal residue of agricultural mineral oil (AMO) was assessed. The predator exhibited a Type II functional response with the asymptote significantly higher in the AMO conditions due to the fact that the prey grew slower and reached a smaller size in this treatment. In terms of prey volume eaten, the satiation level of the predator was unchanged by the AMO deposits. The numbers of eggs produced by adult P. persimilis females at densities of 4, 8 and 16 TSSM adult females/disc in the control were significantly higher than those in the AMO treatment, but were similar for the higher density levels, 32 and 64 prey per disc. Thus the functional response in terms of volume of prey eaten explained the numerical response in terms of predator eggs produced. The presence of AMO deposits when the prey were at high density had no effect on predator efficiency (volume eaten) but resulted in a lower intake than that in control conditions when there was a greater distance between prey.  相似文献

The formation of complexes between copper(II) halides and 2,2′-dipyridylamine (dipyam) has been studied systematically. Only complexes with a 1:1 and 1:2 metal-to-ligand ratio are formed. Some mixed chloro–iodide and halide–PF6 compounds have also been isolated. The X-ray diffraction structures of the [Cu(dipyam)2Br2] · 2H2O (I) and the [Cu(dipyam)2Cl]2I2 · 2CH3CN (II) complexes are reported. I is a rare example of an octahedral coordination among the copper(II) halide complexes of dipyam. The two bromo atoms, which occupy the apical positions, are H-bonded to the water molecules of crystallization. II is a dimer, where each copper forms a cationic chloro-complex of approximately trigonal bipyramidal geometry, the dimerization being due to hydrogen bonds formed by the NH group of one of the two dipyams coordinated to each metal atom with the chlorine atom of the centrosymmetric cationic complex. The iodide anions are hydrogen-bonded to the NH groups of the dipyams not involved in the dimerization.  相似文献

The Morava river forms a border 71 km in length between Slovakia and Austria. Along this stretch of river is the largest complex of flooded grasslands in Central Europe, most of which lays on the Slovak side. Most of the grasslands belong to the subcontinental vegetation alliance Cnidion, with smaller areas of Alopecurion and Molinion. The grasslands are biotopes of many endangered plant and animal species. The influence of water regime dynamics on species composition have been studied since 1992 along permanent transects. The results of studies on the relation between water regime dynamics, vegetation and soils on the whole section of the Morava River floodplain are presented.  相似文献

The beaches of the North Atlantic and North Pacific are home to kelp flies of the Coelopa frigida/nebularum complex, which consists of one to three different species depending on whether the two nominal species are accepted and a cryptic species proposed by Remmert is counted. The morphological differences between two populations of C. frigida ( Fabricius, 1805 ) from the North Sea and the Baltic Region and two populations of C. nebularum Aldrich, 1929 from Alaska and Japan are described and discussed for small, medium, and large specimens. Crossing experiments are used to demonstrate that, under laboratory conditions, no isolation mechanisms between either population exist. Coelopa frigida and C. nebularum are therefore regarded as a single biological species, a conclusion that is congruent with the observation that the genetic distances based on Ef 1‐α and 16S rDNA indicate lower levels of differentiation within C. frigida/nebularum than between undisputed Coelopa species. The substantial morphological, breeding and genetic information on the C. frigida/nebularum species complex is then applied to six different species concepts popular in the modern systematic literature. According to the Biological, Hennigian and Recognition Species Concepts, only a single species would be recognized. The Evolutionary Species Concept is too vague to be applicable and under two variants of the Phylogenetic Species Concept, C. frigida and C. nebularum would constitute separate species. This result confirms that Phylogenetic Species Concepts lead to a higher species number than concepts based on reproductive isolation. Practical and theoretical problems with the various species concepts are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The Tsimane' Amazonian Panel Study (TAPS) is making available the first five years (2002-2006, inclusive) of annual socioeconomic, demographic, and anthropometric data available to the public. The information comes from a foraging-farming society of native Amazonians in Bolivia and includes 13 villages, 332 households, and 1985 people who have been tracked annually since 2002. Coccolithophore fluxes were determined in the Sea of Okhotsk using samples from a 1 year experiment (12 August 1990 to 12 August 1991) with sediment traps at 258 and 1061 m depth. A special study was made on Coccolithus pelagicus, using fragmentation and the degree of etching, as indicators of transport mechanisms. A Corrosion Index for C. pelagicus is developed. The coccolithophore flux pattern at 258 m depth was characterised by a strong seasonality, with flux peaks during autumn 1990 (late November to early December) and spring 1991 (March). The assemblage consisted almost entirely of the two species C. pelagicus and Emiliania huxleyi. During autumn, coccolithophore transportation to 258 m depth mainly occurred within cylindrical fecal pellets and marine snow aggregates of silicoflagellates, and through agglutination on tintinnids. Grazing caused severe fragmentation of coccoliths and disintegration of coccospheres. Marine snow aggregates contained many intact coccospheres of C. pelagicus. During spring, coccolithophores were probably removed from the euphotic zone by the ballast effect of sinking diatoms. The coccolithophore flux peak in spring occurred immediately after the ice had retreated from the trap station, and the trapped assemblage included coccoliths of subtropical species. These features indicate drifting from an ice-free location to the south or east.The coccolith and coccosphere flux at 1061 m was respectively 7 and 12 times lower than at 258 m depth, and maximum fluxes were recorded 2 months later. Increasing carbonate dissolution from 258 to 1061 m depth is expressed in the coccolithophore–CaCO3 flux reduction of 82%, and in the increasing percentage of etched coccoliths of Coccolithus pelagicus from 32 to >90%.  相似文献
