Pythium porphyrae Takahashi et Sasaki, a facultative parasite of Porphyra spp., is the common microbial agent responsible for red rot disease of this red alga in Japan. Host infection by this species and other plant parasitic members of the Pythiaceae is initiated by motile biflagellate zoospores. Factors regulating host specificity and the initial steps involved in the infection process, consisting of attachment, encystment and appressorium formation, are not known. Zoospore encystment and appressorium formation of P. porphyrae were monitored by staining of the fungal cell walls using calcofluor. The zoospores infected only Porphyra spp. and Bangia atropurpurea (Roth) C. Agardh thalli, although they attached to, and encysted on, many other members of the Rhodophyceae (Stylonema alsidii[Zanardini] Drew, Gelidium elegans Kützing, Pterocladiella capillacea[Gmelin] Santelices et Hommersand, Carpopeltis affinis[Harvey] Okamura, Gloiosiphonia capillaris[Hudson] Carmichael in Berkeley, Grateloupia turuturu Yamada, Callophyllis adhaerens Yamada, Gracilaria spp., Lomentaria hakodatensis Yendo, Rhodymenia intricata[Okamura] Okamura, Griffithsia subcylindrica Okamura, Wrangelia tanegana Harvey, and Polysiphonia morrowii Harvey). No attachment or encystment was observed on the red alga Kappaphycus striatum (Schmitz) Doty ex Silva in Silva et al., the brown algae Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar, Scytosiphon sp., and Sargassum thunbergii (Mertens ex Roth) Kuntze as well as members of the Ulvaceae (green algae). Sequential extraction of carbohydrates from Porphyra yezoensis Ueda thalli and the addition of diverse monosaccharides, polysaccharides, and amino acids to zoospore suspensions indicated that encystment and appressorium formation were induced only by sulfated galactans (porphyran, commercial agar, agarose, and carrageenans). Zoospore attachment and encystment on thalli of P. yezoensis was abolished by periodate oxidation of the thallus surface and was reduced by 80–90% after enzymatic removal of sulfated galactan (porphyran). It appears that the interaction of zoospore surface receptors with sulfated galactan (porphyran) determinants on the thallus surface induced specific attachment and encystment on Porphyra spp. thalli. Zoospores encysted, germinated, and formed appressoria on sulfated galactan films and in suspensions of this carbohydrate. Attachment and encystment were induced on commercial agar and agarose films, but appressoria were not induced on agarose films. Supplementation of agarose media with both cold and hot water fractions and with porphyran from P. yezoensis–induced appressoria implicated sulfated galactans (porphyran) in appressorium formation.  相似文献

Type specimens of six species of Codium described by Okamura are illustrated, including the holotype of Codium barbatum and lectotypes of Codium coactum, Codium intricatum, Codium pugniforme, Codium saccatum, and Codium subtubulosum. All species are currently recognized except C. pugniforme, which is indistinguishable from the previously described Codium spongiosum Harvey, Codium subtubulosum was abandoned by Okamura in favor of the previously described Codium divaricatum Holmes, but because of the prior existence of C. divaricatum (C. Agardh) Biasoletto, C. subtubulosum is the correct name for this species.  相似文献

Catenophlyctis gen. nov. is established in the family Catenariaceae to include the fungus previously known as Phlyctorhiza variabilis Karling. This ubiquitous saprophyte was formerly included in the genus Phlyctorhiza Hanson of the Chytridiales on the grounds that its eucarpic thallus is predominantly monocentric and because it develops usually from an enlargement of the germ tube. Additional studies on this species in India have confirmed the previous observations that the thallus of some strains frequently becomes extensively polycentric and Catenaria-like. Also, its zoospores have been found to be similar in structure to those of species of the Catenariaceae. Accordingly, this species cannot be retained in Phlyctorhiza as Hanson defined the genus, and it is transferred from the Chytridiales to a new genus of the family Catenariaceae in the order Blastocladiales.  相似文献

Four morphologically indistinguishable isolates of monoecious Gelidium vagum Okamura were crossed reciprocally to obtain hybrids for a study on heterosis in this alga. Approximately 50% outcrossing was achieved by adding a small fragment of the designated female parent to a much larger quantity of designated male thallus in the crossing dish. Hybrids in the mixed population of isomorphic hybrid and inbred sporelings were identified by the presence of male-specific random amplified polymorphic DNA markers. Growth performance of hybrid tetrasporophytes was compared to that of their gametophytic parents and with inbred tetrasporophytes at near-optimum and sub-optimum temperature and density. In general, the hybrids showed growth superiority over inbred lines, particularly under sub-optimum conditions. In these experiments, the hybrid plants from cross 129 × 130 exhibited a 9.5–130% higher growth rate as compared to the mid-value of the related inbred tetrasporophytes, strongly suggesting the presence of heterosis.  相似文献

The cephalolichen Peltigera aphthosa (L.) Willd. is characterized by lateral heterogeneity, which manifests itself in the presence of three thallus zones, referred to as the apical, basal and medial zone. These zones differ in terms of interaction between lichen bionts and their physiological activity. The apical thallus zone is more efficient in establishing a contact with cyanobacteria, because of a higher lectin content and a larger overall thallus surface area due to the presence of numerous mycobiont hyphae. Cephalodia are formed in this zone. The interaction between the mycobiont and cyanobiont is more intense in the medial zone. However, the establishment of the contact with cyanobacteria in this zone less probable. The spatial distribution of lectins in the thallus was determined. To reveal the differences in photosynthetic activity in three thallus zones, transient analysis of chlorophyll a fluorescence and the assessment of non‐photochemical quenching of excited chlorophyll states were performed. Assimilation of absorbed light energy was more effective in the medial zone. The basal zone was characterized by decreased photosynthetic activity, lichen dissociation and thallus death.  相似文献

The taxonomic status of the red algal genus Pachymeniopsis (Halymeniaceae) was evaluated based on a morphological study of the type species Pachymeniopsis lanceolata (Okamura) Yamada in Kawabata (=Aeodes lanceolata Okamura). Features used to separate Pachymeniopsis from allied genera such as Aeodes or Grateloupia were found to be inconsistently expressed within even single populations, and P. lanceolata is considered to be best placed in Grateloupia. The two remaining species, P. yendoi and P. elliptica, are judged to be conspecific, with P. elliptica also best placed in Grateloupia. The genus Pachymeniopsis is, therefore, considered synonymous with Grateloupia. The transfer of P. lanceolata to Grateloupia is proposed as Grateloupia lanceolata (Okamura) Kawaguchi, comb. nov. The reinstatement of Grateloupia elliptica Holmes, which includes Pachymeniopsis yendoi as a synonym, is also proposed.  相似文献

Laboulbenia ophioneae is described as a new species with illustrations. It is closely related to Laboulbenia celestialis and Laboulbenia asiatica because of some similarities in the morphology of appendages and perithecia. The present species from the latter two species can be distinguished by the shorter, inflated perithecia, the shorter receptacles, and the appendages consisting of more or less darkly colored, broader branches. This new species was found on elytra of Ophionea indica from Taiwan, which has been also known as a host of Laboulbenia polymorpha. A mature thallus noticed by Terada (2004) on the slide 673b (M. Ishikawa collection) and a young thallus illustrated by Sugiyama (1978, fig. 1-G as L. polymorpha) on 673d (M. Ishikawa collection) are both identified as L. ophioneae.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of the shelled sacoglossan Oxynoe olivacea was investigated to better understand the role and importance of this species in influencing encroachments of the alien alga Caulerpa taxifolia in the Mediterranean sea. We tested whether this slug preferred, as preliminary field observations suggested, an aggregative feeding behaviour and which part of the algal thallus, phylloid vs rhizoid, it preferred. Results showed that O. olivacea fed in groups and actively selected phylloid. This outcome poses important questions regarding the possibility that this species, fragmenting the alga thallus, could enhance dispersion and regeneration of C. taxifolia.  相似文献

Thallus mechanical strength, as well as production of secondary metabolites as defensive compounds, of tropical macroalgae is often essential for protection from herbivory. In tropical macroalgae, thallus mechanical strength is negatively correlated with productivity — a trade‐off between productivity and thallus toughness. The tropical fucoids, Turbinaria ornata which has defensive morphological traits against herbivory and Sargassum ilicifolium which is expanding its distribution in Japanese waters, were examined to determine thallus traits related to mechanical strength and productivity and their pair‐wise relationships were also examined. These traits that are directly or indirectly related to the trade‐off between productivity and thallus toughness were compared to data for various other temperate macroalgae by regression analyses. We found two strong positive correlations between thallus mechanical strength and thallus mass or thallus thickness, confirming that higher levels of mechanical strength for tropical fucoids is associated with higher biomass or thallus thickness. Also, negative correlations between thallus toughness and productivity were found indicating structural and physiological trade‐offs. However, the tropical fucoids exhibited relatively high productivity regardless of their higher level of thallus toughness. These traits of the tropical fucoids slightly deviate from the typical conservative strategy with higher thallus toughness and lower productivity as a trade‐off between productivity and thallus toughness.  相似文献

Summary An investigation was made of the vegetative thallus of the lichen Peltigera polydactyla. Using a modified embedding technique it was shown that the ultrastructure of the mycobiont was not radically different from that of nonlichenized Discomycetes, and that the ultrastructure of the phycobiont was like that of the blue-green alga Nostoc. In addition to what were considered healthy blue-green algal cells other cells were present which obviously were breaking down. Well defined heterocysts were also present. No haustoria were found in the thallus.  相似文献

Summary The rhizines of the lichens, Parmelia caperata, Parmelia trichotera and Lobaria pulmonaria were studied with the Stereoscan scanning electronmicroscope and in ultrathin sections with the transmission electronmicroscope. The rhizines are composed of fungal hyphae. The fungal hyphae in the rhizines of the thallus of Parmelia caperata and in the cilia at the thallus border of Parmelia trichotera are connected by a glue-like substance. The ends of the Parmelia caperata rhizines are flattened and enlarged. With these footlike rhizines the thalli are in good connection with the substratum. The cilia at the thallus border of Parmelia trichotera have a tip by which the thallus is fixed on bark or rocks. The cell walls of the fungi hyphae in the Parmelia caperata rhizines and in the Parmelia trichotera cilia are 150–400 nm thick. The rhizines of Lobaria pulmonaria consist of fungi hyphae which are interlaced without a gluey substance. The thallus of Lobaria pulmonaria is connected to the substratum through the tips of single hyphae. The hyphae walls of Lobaria pulmonaria are 800–1800 nm thick.  相似文献

Monostroma angicava and Protomonostroma undulatum are monostromatic green benthic algae (Ulvophyceae), which grow together in the same intertidal habitat of Muroran, Hokkaido, Japan, during the spring season. Commonly, both species have a single chloroplast with one pyrenoid per cell. The parietal chloroplast is located on the periphery of the thallus in both species, although the location of the chloroplast differs in the two. In M. angicava , the chloroplast was observed to be arranged on one‐side of the thallus surface, whereas, in P. undulatum , it was dispersed and randomly located on either side of the thallus or on the lateral face. The density of chlorophylls (Chls) assessed from the absorption spectra of the thallus and its solvent extract was higher in M. angicava , which appeared dark‐green in color, than in the light‐green colored P. undulatum . The maximum photosynthetic rate per thallus area (μmol O2 m?2 s?1) was higher in M. angicava , whereas, per total chlorophyll content (μmol O2 g Chl a + Chl b ?1 s?1) was higher in P. undulatum . Both species showed similar efficiency of photosynthesis at light‐limiting conditions. The efficiency of light absorption by photosystem II (PSII ) in P. undulatum was higher than M. angicava , whereas the photoprotective response was higher in M. angicava . This indicates that more energy is utilized in M. angicava to protect its PSII due to the chloroplast position, which has more direct exposure to light and, therefore, lowers the efficiency of light absorption by PSII . The higher density of chlorophylls in M. angicava could explain higher photosynthesis per thallus area, whereas, higher efficiency of light absorption by PSII in P. undulatum could explain higher photosynthesis per total chlorophyll content. The differences in light absorption efficiency and quantum efficiency of PSII might be an important ecological strategy in these two species for their coexistence in the intertidal area.  相似文献

Lecidea insidiosa, up to now regarded as a lichenicolous fungus without thallus, is a parasitic lichen, growing exclusively onLecanora varia. It kills the plectenchyma of the host, but presumably takes over part of the host-algae to build its own thallus, first inside, then outside of the host thallus. Host and parasite thallus are chemically different.Lecidea insidiosa is not related toLecidea vitellinaria, even though the two were thought to be synonymous for a long time. The species is reported for the first time from the Alps (Steiermark). It is the first known parasitic lichen to occur on a normally wood inhabiting host.

The Cape Ohma region of Shimokita Peninsula, the northernmost point of Honshu Island, Japan, is subject to both the warm Tsugaru Current and the cold Kurile Current. As a result, the Laminarialean flora includes both cold temperature species (Laminaria japonica Areschoug, Kjellmaniella crassifolia Miyabe and Costaria costata (C. Agardh) Saunders) and warm temperature species (Undaria peterseniana (Kjellman) Okamura, Ecklonia stolonifera Okamura), as well as Undaria pinnatifida (Yendo) Okamura, which is distributed in both waters. The frequency of occurrence (as a measure of distribution) and the biomass of these species were recorded in June 1976 (at 50 points in depths between 8–30 m), July 1988 (192 points, 2.5–25 m) and July 2001 (78 points, 2.5–25 m). Comparison of these data revealed a decrease in cold temperature species and an increase in warm temperature species from 1976 or 1988 to 2001. Long-term data of seawater temperature measured at 5 m depth near the study site showed that mean temperatures in the middle of winter (late January to February) in 1989–2000 were 0.9–1.1 C higher than those in 1980–1988. Higher seawater temperatures in the last decade appear to have affected the frequency of occurrence and biomass of the Laminarialean species along the coasts of Cape Ohma. This result supported our previous conclusion that 1 C higher mean seawater temperature in late January caused a decrease in the biomass of L. japonica (by ca. 64%) along the same coast.  相似文献

Abstract

On the spore development and the growth of Kallymenia microphylla J. Ag. (Rhodophyceae, Cryptonemiales) creeping thallus. — The filamentous creeping axis produced by spore grows into a terminal cell and then branches out into a monostratified creeping thallus looking like a disc. This creeping thallus is looking exactly like that of the Rhodocorton haucki (Schiffner) Hamel. Compared to the other species of Kallymenia, we find out that this creeping thallus has cellular fusions as well; they are more frequent and appear quite early here.  相似文献

The development and asexual cycle of Gongrosira debaryana have been studied in unialgal culture. Zoospores may settle singly and develop a Pleurotham-mon-like thallus, or they may clump and so produce a thallus characteristic of Gongrosira. It is suggested that Borzi's Pleurothamnion papuasicum be considered a synonym of Gongrosira debaryana.  相似文献

Porphyra yezoensis Ueda is an important marine aquaculture crop with single‐layered gametophytic thalli. In this work, the influences of thallus dehydration level, cold‐preservation (freezing) time, and thawing temperature on the photosynthetic recovery of young P. yezoensis thalli were investigated employing an imaging pulse‐amplitude‐modulation (PAM) fluorometer. The results showed that after 40 d of frozen storage when performing thallus thawing under 10°C, the water content of the thalli showed obvious effects on the photosynthetic recovery of the frozen thalli. The thalli with absolute water content (AWC) of 10%–40% manifested obvious superiority compared to the thalli with other AWCs, while the thalli thawed at 20°C showed very high survival rate (93.10%) and no obvious correlation between thallus AWCs and thallus viabilities. These results indicated that inappropriate thallus water content contributed to the cell damage during the freeze‐thaw cycle and that proper thawing temperature is very crucial. Therefore, AWC between 10% and 40% is the suitable thallus water content range for frozen storage, and the thawing process should be as short as possible. However, it is also shown that for short‐term cold storage the Porphyra thallus water content also showed no obvious effect on the photosynthetic recovery of the thalli, and the survival rate was extremely high (100%). These results indicated that freezing time is also a paramount contributor of the cell damage during the freeze‐thaw cycle. Therefore, the frozen nets should be used as soon as time permits.  相似文献
