The objective of the present study was to investigate optimal group size in cattle in communal pastures where cattle from various farms are turned out: (1) to ascertain if cows derived from each farm form an affiliative group and (2) to investigate the effect of the number of farm mates on social and maintenance behaviours when farm mates form an affiliative group. Farm mates were defined as cows from the same farm. A total of 27 cows having zero, one, two to four, or sixteen farm mates were selected as focal animals in two communal pastures. Each focal animal was followed by an individual observer for 8 h from sunrise. The nearest neighbour and the distance to the nearest neighbour were recorded at 10-min intervals, and maintenance behaviours at 1-min intervals; social behaviours and participants were recorded continuously. Most focal animals frequently choose cows from the same farm as their nearest neighbours allogroomed with these farm mates significantly more (P<0.001). Two focal animals did not form affiliative groups with farm mates. The mean distance to the nearest neighbours, whether farm mates or non-farm mates from focal animals having one and two to four farm mates was shorter than cows turned out with no farm mate (1.4 vs. 1.9 times as long as a cow's body length, P<0.05). Cows having two to four farm mates performed (7.8 s/h/cow, P=0.06) and received allogrooming more (9.8 s/h/cow) and escaped less during agonistic encounters (0.1 frequencies/h/cow, P<0.01) than ones having other numbers of farm mates. The mean duration of grazing behaviour per bout tended to increase with the number of farm mates (5.2 to 10.3 min, P<0.05). The mean duration of recumbency behaviour of cows having two to four farm mates (44.0 min/bout) was longer than the ones having other numbers of farm mates. Social and maintenance behaviours of cows having 16 farm mates were like those having zero or one farm mates, which suggested that the social bond among them was weak. It is concluded that a group of cows having two to four farm mates, that is, a group size of three to five cows, may be optimal for a stable life in a communal pasture.  相似文献

Boar rearing, which avoids pain and suffering caused by surgical castration, provides better performance, a greater deposition of muscle tissue and leaner carcasses and thus has beneficial effects on both animal welfare and the product. Some countries that do not slaughter boars must consider their boar taint and aggressive and sexual behaviours. Considering that pigs are housed in large groups, which may complicate the formation of social hierarchies and increase fighting and mounting behaviours, some studies have conducted research with reduced numbers of pigs per pen, but these behaviours continued to be observed. However, a study of the reproductive status of pair-housed male pigs has yet to be reported. The aim of this study was to determine whether the reproductive status of uncastrated, immunocastrated and surgically castrated pair-housed male pigs alters their natural, agonistic and sexual behaviours. A total of 48 male pigs from Agroceres PIC™ genetics were assigned to three groups: surgically castrated (barrows), immunocastrated and uncastrated (boars). Natural, aggressive and sexual behaviours of the pigs were assessed by direct observations during four periods of 12 h each (six, five and three weeks before slaughter and the slaughter week). The pigs were housed in pairs from the growing phase until slaughter. Animal behaviour was observed from the finishing phase to slaughter. Carcass lesions were assessed according to five different classes (one: no injury; two to five: severely injured). Overall, boars spent more time lying and less time eating and drinking than barrows. In total of all the periods (48 h), boars expressed more aggressive and sexual behaviours than barrows, whereas immunocastrated pigs displayed similar behaviours to boars, before and after the second vaccine dose. No differences in carcass lesions between treatments and no prevalence of carcasses with severe injuries were observed. In conclusion, the reproductive status of pair-housed male pigs did not change the natural behaviour of boars, immunocastrated pigs or barrows. The agonistic and sexual behaviours of boars and barrows remained unchanged. When housing pigs in pairs, immunocastrated pigs presented similar agonistic and sexual behaviours to boars before and after the second immunocastration vaccine dose. The use of pair-housed uncastrated male pigs has generated welfare benefits for these animals, as the number of carcasses with injuries did not differ from barrows and immunocastrated pigs.  相似文献

Growing pigs can display undesirable behaviours, reflecting or causing poor welfare. Addition of magnesium (Mg) to the diet could reduce these, as Mg supplementation has been associated with improved coping ability in response to stress. This study examined the effect of supplementation with a Mg-rich marine extract-based product (Supplement) on the behaviour, skin and tail lesion scores and salivary cortisol concentrations of growing pigs. At weaning (28 days), 448 piglets were assigned to either Control or Supplement (0.05%) diets in single-sex groups of 14. Four weeks later (c. 17 kg), pigs were blocked according to weight and back test scores. Seven piglets from each pen were mixed with seven from another pen of the same sex and dietary treatment to yield the following groups: control male, Supplement male, control female and Supplement female (n = 4 of each). This marked the start of the 9-week experimental period. Instances of the following behaviours were recorded in each pen for 8 × 2 min periods 1 day/week: aggression (fight, head-knock and bite); harmful (tail-in-mouth, ear-chewing and belly-nosing); and sexual/mounting behaviour. Four focal pigs were selected from each pen, and their behaviour was continuously recorded for 2 × 5 min periods on the same day. Saliva was collected once per week at 1000 h by allowing pigs to chew on a cotton bud for c. 1 min. Salivary cortisol was analysed in duplicate by an enzyme immunoassay. Skin and tail lesions were scored according to severity 1 day/week. There were fewer aggressive incidents in Supplement pens (P < 0.01), and mounting behaviour (performed only by males) was almost three times lower in Supplement than in control pens (P < 0.01). However, there was no effect of Supplement on the incidence of each of the harmful behaviours. Behaviour of the focal pigs showed no treatment effect on the duration or incidence of aggressive behaviour. However, Supplement pigs spent less time performing harmful behaviours compared with control pigs (P < 0.001). Supplement had no effect on the occurrence or severity of tail-biting outbreaks or on tail lesion scores. However, Supplement females had lower skin lesion scores, in particular in the ears and shoulders (P < 0.01). Finally, Supplement pigs had lower salivary cortisol concentrations (P < 0.01). Mounting is a major welfare concern in uncastrated pigs, and therefore this represents an important welfare benefit of Supplement. Reduced salivary cortisol, in conjunction with reduced skin lesion scores in supplemented females, suggests that addition of a Mg-rich marine extract improved pig welfare in this system.  相似文献

Research is needed to validate lesions recorded at meat inspection as indicators of pig welfare on farm. The aims were to determine the influence of mixing pigs on carcass lesions and to establish whether such lesions correlate with pig behaviour and lesions scored on farm. Aggressive and mounting behaviour of pigs in three single sex pens was recorded on Day −5, −2, and −1 relative to slaughter (Day 0). On Day 0 pigs were randomly allocated to 3 treatments (n = 20/group) over 5 replicates: males mixed with females (MF), males mixed with males (MM), and males unmixed (MUM). Aggressive and mounting behaviours were recorded on Day 0 at holding on farm and lairage. Skin/tail lesions were scored according to severity at the farm (Day −1), lairage, and on the carcass (Day 0). Effect of treatment and time on behaviour and lesions were analysed by mixed models. Spearman rank correlations between behaviour and lesion scores and between scores recorded at different stages were determined. In general, MM performed more aggressive behaviour (50.4 ± 10.72) than MUM (20.3 ± 9.55, P < 0.05) and more mounting (30.9 ± 9.99) than MF (11.4 ± 3.76) and MUM (9.8 ± 3.74, P < 0.05). Skin lesion scores increased between farm (Day −1) and lairage (P < 0.001), but this tended to be significant only for MF and MM (P = 0.08). There was no effect of treatment on carcass lesions and no associations were found with fighting/mounting. Mixing entire males prior to slaughter stimulated mounting and aggressive behaviour but did not influence carcass lesion scores. Carcass skin/tail lesions scores were correlated with scores recorded on farm (rskin = 0.21 and rtail = 0.18, P < 0.01) suggesting that information recorded at meat inspection could be used as indicators of pig welfare on farm.  相似文献

Domestic pigs build a maternal nest in the day preceding parturition. We have shown that prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) induces nest building behaviour in non-pregnant pigs. The aim of this experiment was to examine the effects of different environmental temperatures on PGF(2alpha)-induced nest building. Data were collected from 9 Large White (LW) and 10 Large Black (LB) 8-9-month-old nulliparous sows (gilts). The pigs were housed in social groups between experiments and tested individually in pens (1.8mx1.8m) containing straw, within an environmentally controlled chamber. Pigs were habituated to the testing pens (maintained at 17 degrees C) and tested once at each of three temperatures (low, 5 degrees C; moderate, 17 degrees C; high, 30 degrees C). During testing the temperature of the chamber was adjusted at 09.00h and had reached set point by10.00h. The pigs were injected intramuscularly with 3ml saline at 10.30h and 0.1mg/kg PGF(2alpha) (Lutalyse, Upjohn) at 11.30h. Behaviour was scored for 1h after treatment with saline and 1h after treatment with PGF(2alpha) using one/zero sampling from video recordings. Nest building behaviour (rooting, pawing and gathering straw) was induced by PGF(2alpha) at all temperatures in both LW and LB breeds. There was a significant increase in rooting behaviours with decreasing temperature. No significant effects of temperature were found on the scores for gather or paw. The pigs spent more time lying down at the high compared to the low temperature after both saline and PGF(2alpha) treatment. Other behaviours unrelated to nest building but induced by PGF(2alpha), such as scratching, were unaffected by temperature. The results show that the nest building behaviour of non-pregnant pigs can be induced by exogenous PGF(2alpha) treatment, and that some, but not all, aspects of PGF(2alpha)-induced nest building (rooting but not pawing or gathering) are altered by environmental temperature.  相似文献

Understanding broiler behaviours provides important implications for animal well-being and farm management. The objectives of this study were to classify specific broiler behaviours by analysing data from wearable accelerometers using two machine learning models, K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). Lightweight triaxial accelerometers were used to record accelerations of nine 7-week-old broilers at a sampling frequency of 40 Hz. A total of 261.6-min data were labelled for four behaviours – walking, resting, feeding and drinking. Instantaneous motion features including magnitude area, vector magnitude, movement variation, energy, and entropy were extracted and stored in a dataset which was then segmented by one of the six window lengths (1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 20 s) with 50% overlap between consecutive windows. The mean, variation, SD, minimum and maximum of each instantaneous motion feature and two-way correlations of acceleration data were calculated within each window, yielding a total of 43 statistic features for training and testing of machine learning models. Performance of the models was evaluated using pure behaviour datasets (single behaviour type per dataset) and continuous behaviour datasets (continuous recording that involved multiple behaviour types per dataset). For pure behaviour datasets, both KNN and SVM models showed high sensitivities in classifying broiler resting (87% and 85%, respectively) and walking (99% and 99%, respectively). The accuracies of SVM were higher than KNN in differentiating feeding (88% and 75%, respectively) and drinking (83% and 62%, respectively) behaviours. Sliding window with 1-s length yielded the best performance for classifying continuous behaviour datasets. The performance of classification model generally improved as more birds were included for training. In conclusion, classification of specific broiler behaviours can be achieved by recording bird triaxial accelerations and analysing acceleration data through machine learning. Performances of different machine learning models differ in classifying specific broiler behaviours.  相似文献

Straw possesses many characteristics that make it attractive to pigs and can therefore be effective in preventing negative penmate-directed behaviours. However, straw is difficult to handle in current vacuum slurry systems under most commercial conditions and can therefore only be used in limited amounts. To occupy pigs effectively, straw must remain attractive to pigs throughout the whole day; hence, have a certain degree of novelty. We investigated the penmate-directed behaviour of liquid-fed growing pigs in a production herd, assigned to five experimental treatments: 1×25, 1×50, 1×100, 2×50 and 4×25 g of chopped straw/pig per day, with 20 replicates of each treatment (pen was regarded as experimental unit). Behaviour was observed at two different growth stages; ~40 and 80 kg live weight of the pigs. Activity and exploratory behaviour directed at penmates, straw, pen components and the slatted floor were registered continuously for 15 min of each hour during day time (0600 to 2200 h) by use of video observation of three focal pigs per pen. The pigs were active for about one-third of the day corresponding to ~5 h/day. Of the active time, an average of 7% (35 min) was spent on penmate-directed behaviour. The pigs were more active and increased their straw-directed behaviour when provided with 100 g straw/pig per day compared with 25 and 50 g (P<0.001). However, penmate-directed behaviour was not reduced with an increased amount of straw (P>0.05), and there was no effect on pigs’ behaviour when straw provision was increased per day (P>0.05). Pigs became less active and reduced their straw-directed activities when their weight increased from 40 to 80 kg live weight (P<0.001), but the amount of penmate-directed behaviour was similar (P>0.05). Further, the residual straw results indicated that perhaps a more frequent straw provision could help establish a more even level of fresh available straw during the day. However, the frequent straw provision did not occupy pigs more than one daily allocation did. In conclusion, there was no difference in penmate-directed behaviour of the pigs when given 25 or 50 g of straw/pig per day compared with 100 g of straw/pig per day, nor were there any difference when 100 g of straw/pig per day was provided more frequently.  相似文献

The infection rate of 60 pigs (10 pigs from each of six farms) by Helicobacter species was studied by two techniques. Histological examination of the cardiac area of the stomach yielded a 58% positive result versus an 80% positive result by PCR with genus-specific primers. Eighty percent of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified, classified in four groups by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism, and sequenced. Isolates from all farms except one (farm C) were identified as Helicobacter heilmannii type 1, while those from farm C were identified as H. heilmannii type 2. Attempts to culture this organism in vitro failed. Helicobacter pylori was not found in these animals.  相似文献

Methods available to assess animal welfare at farm level are based on a range of welfare parameters, which can be divided into two categories, environment-based and animal-based parameters. The first category describes features of the environment and management, which can be considered prerequisites for welfare. The second category records animals’ responses to that particular environment and management more directly. Objective of this study was to validate a mainly environment-based method, the animal needs index (ANI), with animal-based methods: behavioural observations and feather condition scores (FCS). The study was conducted on 20 commercial laying hen farms, 10 farms with battery cages and 10 farms with deep litter systems. During a 1-day visit on each farm, ANI was assessed, FCS was scored, and behavioural observations were performed. Instantaneous scan sampling and continuous focal sampling were used to assess the time spent on different behaviours and the occurrence of event behaviours. Data from behavioural observations and FCS were reduced with principal factor analysis. This resulted in two factors for each method. Significant positive correlations were found between ANI, on the one hand, and ‘movement’ and ‘comfort’, two factors from behavioural observations, on the other hand. A significant negative correlation was found between ANI and ‘wing damage’ (from FCS). The results of this study show that ANI is valid and sensitive enough to show differences in animal welfare between housing systems, whereas differences in welfare within housing systems cannot be shown. In conclusion, ANI is an appropriate method for assessment of laying hen welfare on a large number of farms with different housing systems.  相似文献

Changes in the drinking behaviour of pigs may indicate health, welfare or productivity problems. Automated monitoring and analysis of drinking behaviour could allow problems to be detected, thus improving farm productivity. A high frequency radio frequency identification (HF RFID) system was designed to register the drinking behaviour of individual pigs. HF RFID antennas were placed around four nipple drinkers and connected to a reader via a multiplexer. A total of 55 growing-finishing pigs were fitted with radio frequency identification (RFID) ear tags, one in each ear. RFID-based drinking visits were created from the RFID registrations using a bout criterion and a minimum and maximum duration criterion. The HF RFID system was successfully validated by comparing RFID-based visits with visual observations and flow meter measurements based on visit overlap. Sensitivity was at least 92%, specificity 93%, precision 90% and accuracy 93%. RFID-based drinking duration had a high correlation with observed drinking duration (R2=0.88) and water usage (R2=0.71). The number of registrations after applying the visit criteria had an even higher correlation with the same two variables (R2=0.90 and 0.75, respectively). There was also a correlation between number of RFID visits and number of observed visits (R2=0.84). The system provides good quality information about the drinking behaviour of individual pigs. As health or other problems affect the pigs’ drinking behaviour, analysis of the RFID data could allow problems to be detected and signalled to the farmer. This information can help to improve the productivity and economics of the farm as well as the health and welfare of the pigs.  相似文献

This study aimed at assessing the effect of the observation method (direct or from video) and the effect of the presence of an observer on the behavioural results in veal calves kept on a commercial farm. To evaluate the effect of the observation method, 20 pens (four to five calves per pen) were observed by an observer for 60 min (two observation sessions of 30 min) and video-recorded at the same time. To evaluate the effect of the presence of the observer in front of the pen, 24 pens were video-recorded on 4 consecutive days and an observer was present in front of each pen for 60 min (two observation sessions of 30 min) on the third day. Behaviour was recorded using instantaneous scan sampling. For the study of the observer's effect, the analysis was limited to the posture, abnormal oral behaviour and manipulation of substrates. The two observation methods gave similar results for the time spent standing, but different results for all other behaviours. The presence of an observer did not affect the behaviour of calves at day level; however, their behaviour was affected when the observer was actually present in front of the pens. A higher percentage of calves were standing and were manipulating substrate in the presence of the observer, but there was no effect on abnormal oral behaviour. In conclusion, direct observations are a more suitable observation method than observations from video recordings for detailed behaviours in veal calves. The presence of an observer has a short-term effect on certain behaviours of calves that will have to be taken into consideration when monitoring these behaviours.  相似文献

Numerous studies have shown that providing straw to pigs can reduce undesirable behaviours such as aggression, tail biting and stereotypy. The measurement of various neuromodulators can be helpful in assessing the development of positive behaviours and overall animal welfare. The oxytocin release is frequently linked to positive emotions and positive welfare. It has been suggested that oxytocin modulates the serotoninergic system. This study aims to investigate the potential effect of straw provision in pigs on peripheral levels of oxytocin and serotonin. In total, 18 mini-pigs were involved in an exploratory study conducted in two parallel groups, Enriched (n=10) and Control (n=8) groups. Pigs were divided by group and housed in pens of two individuals. Straw was provided continuously only in Enriched group and renewed each day for 2 weeks. Two blood samples were drawn from each animal 5 to 10 min before providing the straw, and 15 min after providing straw, during the 1st week, to analyse peripheral changes in oxytocin and serotonin before and after straw provision, and determine the existence of a putative short-term effect. The same procedure was carried out for Control group, without straw provision. Long-term effects of straw provision were also examined using blood samples drawn at the same hour from each animal in the 2nd and 3rd weeks. During this time, animals had the permanent possibility to explore the straw in Enriched group but not in Control group. At the end of each week, one animal-keeper completed two visual analogue scales for each mini-pig regarding the difficulty/ease to work with and handle it and its trust in humans. Results showed peripheral oxytocin increases in both groups after 2 weeks (P=0.02). Results did not demonstrate any effect of providing straw to allow exploratory behaviour on peripheral serotonin. Other results were not significant. This preliminary study explored the relationship between peripheral oxytocin and serotonin and the presence of straw that allow pigs to perform exploratory behaviour, suggesting that there was no relationship between them. Some future studies may include crossing oxytocin and serotonin with other parameters, such as behavioural measures, to obtain more information about the true state of the animal and any possible relationship with pig welfare.  相似文献

The study was designed to provide quantifiable information on both within- and between-herd variation in pig growth rate from birth to slaughter and to examine how this was influenced by moving pigs at a common age to a common environment. Five litters were selected from each of eight pig herds in Northern Ireland with varying growth performance. All eight herds were offered the same nutritional regime. Five pigs (three boars and two gilts) were selected from each litter. In each herd, 22 pigs (12 boars and 10 gilts) were weighed individually, every 4 weeks, from 4 to 20 weeks of age. At 4 weeks of age (weaning) three non-sibling boars were taken from each herd and brought to a common environment where they received medication, were housed individually from 6 weeks of age and offered the same dietary regime. They were weighed and feed intakes were recorded twice weekly. A growth rate difference of 61 g/day (P < 0.001), 112 g/day (P < 0.01) and 170 g/day (P < 0.001) was observed on farm, between the top and bottom quartile of herds during 4 to 8, 8 to 12 and 12 to 20 weeks of age, respectively. This difference in growth rate equated to an average difference in cost of production of ¢13/kg carcass on a birth to bacon unit. When pigs from the different herds were housed in the common environment, large variation in growth performance (143 g/day (P < 0.01) and 243 g/day (P < 0.001) for 8 to 12 and 12 to 20 weeks, respectively) was also observed between the top and bottom quartile of herds. Although feed efficiency was similar, a significant feed intake difference of 329 g/day (P < 0.01) and 655 g/day (P < 0.001) between 8 to 12 and 12 to 20 weeks of age was observed. The variation in growth rate between pigs whether managed on farm or in the common environment was similar (variation in days to 100 kg on farm and in the common environment was 18 and 19 days, respectively). When housed in the common environment, although the top and bottom quartile of pigs converted feed equally efficiently, pigs in the top quartile had significantly higher feed intakes suggesting greater appetites. It is difficult to assess the extent to which these differences can be attributed to genetic effects or pre-weaning environment, and how much the effects of management, disease or genetics contributed to the variation between and within herds.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) vaccine, Improvac™ (Pfizer Ltd), in suppressing aggressive and sexual behaviour of male pigs. One hundred and thirty-six pigs were assigned to three treatments: entire male pigs (n = 64), immunocastration against GnRH (n = 48) and surgical castration (n = 24). Surgical castration was performed before the age of 1 week. Vaccination comprised two injections: the first injection was given 8 to 11 weeks before slaughter and the second injection 4 weeks before slaughter. After the second injection, immunocastrated pigs showed less non-violent social and aggressive behaviours than entire male pigs of the same age. Mounting was reduced to the same low level as observed in surgically castrated pigs, and more immunocastrated pigs were without skin lesions compared with entire male pigs. Pigs that received the second injection only 1 week before the observation day did not differ significantly in behaviour from those that received the injection 3 weeks before the observation day. Thus, the behaviour seems to change soon after the second injection and these changes remain until slaughter.  相似文献

The behaviour of eight stress-susceptible and eight normal juvenile pigs was compared by visual observation to test the possibility for pre-determining, to some degree, the stress susceptibility on behavioural grounds. Data were analysed according to observation time and the physiological status of each animal. During the feeding period (08.00–10.00 h), the general level of activity of all the pigs was higher, as expected; 13 of 20 behaviours were more frequent. From 08.00 to 10.00 h, stress-susceptible animals drank more often and investigated the environment and their peers by naso-ear and naso-anal contacts more frequently than normal animals, while they were seen lying less often. However, frequency of all behaviours was similar from 10.00 to 12.00 h. It is suggested that behavioural recognition of stress-susceptible swine could be a simple, reliable and non-stressful method, although it still remains complementary to physiological detection.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of giving a two-dose regimen of gonadotropin-releasing hormone vaccine, Improvac® (Pfizer Ltd), earlier than currently recommended, on performance and behaviour of growing/finishing pigs. Cross-bred male pigs (n = 192) were randomly allocated, within a litter, into four groups at birth: one group of pigs surgically castrated without anaesthesia before one week of age, a second group of early vaccinated pigs given Improvac at 10 and 14 weeks of age, a third group of standard vaccinated pigs given Improvac at 16 and 20 weeks of age, so that the second vaccination was given 4 to 6 weeks before slaughter as recommended by the manufacturer, and a fourth group of entire male pigs. The experiment started when the pigs were 12 weeks old and lasted until 25 weeks of age, when the pigs were slaughtered. The pigs were fed restrictedly. Daily weight gain and feed conversion during the entire raising period did not differ significantly between groups. Estimated lean meat content of early vaccinated and surgically castrated pigs was lower when compared with entire male pigs, whereas standard vaccinated pigs did not differ from entire males. Dressing percentage was higher in early vaccinated and surgically castrated pigs than in standard vaccinated and entire male pigs, partly because of lower size and weight of reproductive organs. For both groups of vaccinated pigs, both problematic and non-problematic behaviours decreased after their second injection, from the levels of entire males to those of surgically castrated pigs. After the second injection, pigs of both vaccination groups performed no mountings, in contrast with entire male pigs of the same age. Skin lesions at slaughter were fewer and less severe for vaccinated pigs compared with entire male pigs. No difference in income per carcass was observed for surgically castrated or vaccinated pigs. However, for entire male pigs the income was lower, as the payment system in Sweden also takes into consideration the additional cost for boar taint analyses and reduced payment for tainted carcasses. Under our experimental conditions, early vaccination with Improvac can be used as an alternative to the recommended schedule to minimise problematic behaviour with unaffected profitability.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of an acute stressor in the early postnatal life of pigs, surgical castration, on post-weaning behaviour, and on the behavioural, endocrine and immune responses elicited by a low-dose lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge after weaning. At 5-days-of-age, 64 male piglets were randomly assigned to undergo surgical castration or were left untreated (treatment). Pigs were weaned at 28 days-of-age. Behaviour post-weaning and mixing was assessed during a 1-h period, during which agonistic interactions were recorded. One day post-weaning, pigs were injected intraperitoneally with a single dose of 0 or 5 μg/kg of BW of LPS from Escherichia coli (challenge). Sickness behaviour was studied by scan sampling every 5 min for 45 min at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 h after the challenge. Blood samples were taken at 0, 2, 12 or 24 h after injection and were analysed for plasma concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-), interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA) and cortisol. Results showed that non-castrated pigs were more aggressive than castrated pigs immediately after weaning (P < 0.05). Administration of LPS provoked behaviours characteristic of sickness including a reduction in general activity, as well as decreased eating and exploratory behaviours (P < 0.05). These altered behaviours occurred predominantly 3-h post injection (P < 0.05). Significant treatment by challenge interactions showed that castration reduced the occurrence of sickness behaviours induced by LPS, such as depressed general activity (P < 0.01), anorexia (P < 0.01) and reduced exploratory behaviours (P < 0.05). LPS administration increased TNF- levels (P < 0.05), with peak concentrations 2 h after injection (P < 0.01). CRP levels of LPS-treated pigs were higher than saline-treated animals at 12 h (P < 0.05). LPS administration tended to increase plasma SAA levels (P < 0.1), but did not increase cortisol levels (P > 0.1). However, castration did not affect the response of pro-inflammatory cytokines, acute phase proteins and cortisol to the challenge. These results show that surgical castration reduces aggressiveness at weaning and affects specific sickness behaviours but not the endocrine and immune responses elicited by low-dose endotoxin challenge in weaned pigs.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare a new mating system, called the Detection-Mating Area (DM Area), and a conventional mating system on the long-term reproductive performance of commercial pigs. The DM Area treatment basically involved detecting oestrous females in an arena closely surrounded on two sides by boars and mating these females in this arena. This mating system was designed to improve the physical and sexual environments of the pigs at mating. In contrast, the conventional treatment involved conducting oestrus detection and mating in the boar's accommodation pen. The study was conducted over an 18-month period at a commercial farm that housed 2400 breeding female pigs.

In order to control for the effects of the stockperson, an analysis was conducted on the reproductive performance of female pigs in which one stockperson assisted the matings in both treatments over a 12-month period. Gilts mated in the DM Area treatment had a higher (P<0.05) total litter size and a higher (P<0.01) litter size born alive than gilts mated in the conventional treatment (10.31 vs. 8.96 and 9.50 vs. 8.29, respectively). Although gilts in the DM Area treatment had a higher farrowing rate (93.2 vs. 87.9%), this difference was not significant (P>0.05). There were no significant (P>0.05) differences found between the reproductive performance of sows in the two treatments; however this comparison was confounded by sows in the DM Area treatment having a lower number of matings per oestrus than those in the other treatment. Observations on the sexual behaviour of pigs at 145 matings indicated that the boars in the DM Area treatment displayed a higher (P<0.05) number of bouts of courting behaviour directed towards the female than boars in the conventional treatment (8.3 and 6.4, respectively). These very limited observations on sexual behaviour suggest that changes in the courting behaviour of bears may be associated with changes in litter size. While there was some indication from the results of progesterone analysis of blood samples taken from unmated gilts that there may have been some differences between treatments in the sexual age of gilts at matings, these differences are unlikely to explain the differences in litter size between treatments. Further research is required to identify the component (s) of the DM Area treatment that are responsible for the improvement in litter size in gilts and to further examine the effects of the two treatments on the reproductive performance of sows.  相似文献

In the EU, pigs must have permanent access to manipulable materials such as straw, rope, wood, etc. Long straw can fulfil this function, but can increase labour requirements for cleaning pens, and result in problems with blocked slatted floors and slurry systems. Chopped straw might be more practical, but what is the effect on pigs’ behaviour of using chopped straw instead of long straw? Commercial pigs in 1/3 slatted, 2/3 solid pens of 15 pigs were provided with either 100 g/pig per day of long straw (20 pens) or of chopped straw (19 pens). Behavioural observations were made of three focal pigs per pen (one from each of small, medium and large weight tertiles) for one full day between 0600 and 2300 h at each of ~40 and ~80 kg. The time spent rooting/investigating overall (709 s/pig per hour at 40 kg to 533 s/pig per hour at 80 kg), or directed to the straw/solid floor (497 s/pig per hour at 40 kg to 343 s/pig per hour at 80 kg), was not affected by straw length but reduced with age. Time spent investigating other pigs (83 s/pig per hour at 40 kg), the slatted floor (57 s/pig per hour) or pen fixtures (21 s/pig per hour) was not affected by age or straw length. Aggressive behaviour was infrequent, but lasted about twice as long in pens with chopped straw (2.3 s/pig per hour at 40 kg) compared with pens with long straw (1.0 s/pig per hour at 40 kg, P=0.060). There were no significant effects of straw length on tail or ear lesions, but shoulders were significantly more likely to have minor scratches with chopped straw (P=0.031), which may reflect the higher levels of aggression. Smaller pigs showed more rooting/investigatory behaviour, and in particular directed towards the straw/solid floor and the slatted floor than their larger pen-mates. Females exhibited more straw and pen fixture-directed behaviour than males. There were no effects of pig size or sex on behaviour directed towards other pigs. In summary, pigs spent similar amounts of time interacting with straw/solid floor when long and chopped straw were provided, and most aspects of pig-directed behaviour and injuries were not affected by straw length. There was an increase in pigs with minor shoulder lesions with chopped straw, perhaps because of increased aggression. The use of chopped straw as an enrichment material for pigs warrants further investigation in larger and more detailed studies.  相似文献

In farm animals, salivary cortisol has become a widely used parameter for measuring stress responses. However, only few studies have dealt with basal levels of concentration of cortisol in pigs and its circadian rhythm. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of ambient temperature and thermoregulatory behaviour on the circadian rhythm of salivary cortisol levels in fattening pigs. Subjects were 30 fattening pigs of different weight (60 to 100 kg), kept in six groups in an uninsulated building in pens with partly slatted floors. Saliva samples were taken every 2 h over periods of 24 h at different ambient temperatures at two times in winter and four times in summer. Thermoregulatory behaviour was recorded in the same 24-h time periods. The effect of time of day, body weight, ambient temperature and behaviour on the cortisol level was analysed using a mixed-effects model. Two peaks of cortisol levels per day were found. This circadian pattern became more pronounced with increasing weight and on days where thermoregulatory behaviour was shown. Mean cortisol levels per day were affected by weight but not by thermoregulatory behaviour. From our data, we conclude that long-term variations in cortisol concentration may be influenced by increasing age and weight more than by the respective experimental situation. In assessing animal welfare, it seems more reliable to consider the circadian pattern of cortisol concentration instead of only one value per day.  相似文献
