Yeasts and filamentous fungi carried by the gynes of leaf-cutting ants   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Insect-associated microbes exhibit a wide range of interactions with their hosts. One example of such interactions is the insect-driven dispersal of microorganisms, which plays an essential role in the ecology of several microbes. To study dispersal of microorganisms by leaf-cutting ants (Formicidae: Attini), we applied culture-dependent methods to identify the filamentous fungi and yeasts found in two different body parts of leaf-cutting ant gynes: the exoskeleton and the infrabuccal pocket. The gynes use the latter structure to store a pellet of the ants’ symbiotic fungus during nest founding. Many filamentous fungi (n = 142) and yeasts (n = 19) were isolated from the gynes’ exoskeleton. In contrast, only seven filamentous fungi and three yeasts isolates were recovered from the infrabuccal pellets, suggesting an efficient mechanism utilized by the gynes to prevent contamination of the symbiotic fungus inoculum. The genus Cladosporium prevailed (78%) among filamentous fungi whereas Aureobasidium, Candida and Cryptococcus prevailed among yeasts associated with gynes. Interestingly, Escovopsis, a specialized fungal pathogen of the leaf-cutting ant-fungus symbiosis, was not isolated from the body parts or from infrabuccal pellets of any gynes sampled. Our results suggest that gynes of the leaf-cutter ants Atta laevigata and A. capiguara do not vertically transmit any particular species of yeasts or filamentous fungi during the foundation of a new nest. Instead, fungi found in association with gynes have a cosmopolitan distribution, suggesting they are probably acquired from the environment and passively dispersed during nest foundation. The possible role of these fungi for the attine ant–microbial symbiosis is discussed.  相似文献

Hyoliths are Paleozoic fossils that have a calcareous exoskeleton consisting of an elongate, usually bilaterally symmetrical cone, a close fitting operculum, and a pair of curved appendages. Their skeletal ultrastructure resembles the crossed-lamellar shell layers of some molluscs. Several specimens from the Ordovician of France and the Cambrian of Antarctica have parts of the gut preserved by infilling matrix, showing that both mouth ad anus were located near the cone aperture. Muscle scars in other hyolith shells indicate that the animal had a series of dorsoventral and longitudinal, or longitudinal and circular muscles, which operated through a hydrostatic skeleton to protract and retract the head, to open and close the operculum, and to move the appendages. Although the shell form and skeletal ultra-structure of hyoliths are of a molluscan type, the muscle insertions suggest that the hyolith cone is not homologous with the dorsal exoskeleton of primitive molluscs. Hyoliths probably constitute a small extinct branch of phylum size, related to the Mollusca and the Sipunculoidea. All three groups may have had common ancestors in the late Precambrian.  相似文献

Food and feeding behavior of the hoplonemertean Oerstedia dorsalis   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
The monostiliferous nemertean Oerstedia dorsalis was collected from eelgrass (Zostera marina) beds located along the coast of New Jersey, and feeding responses to amphipods and isopods were observed in the laboratory. Tests with 46 worms showed that they fed suctorially on Ampelisca vadorum, Ampithoe longimana, Corophium acherusicum and C. tuberculata. Corophiids were preferred. Upon contact with an amphipod, the proboscis is everted and strikes the prey on the ventral side, immobilizing it in a few minutes. The worm probes the sternal region with its head and everts its proboscis one or more times during the process. The exoskeleton is eventually penetrated by the head, and the stomach is everted into the hemocoel as a flattened funnel-like structure. Peristaltic undulations of the body signify the suctorial action that removes the living contents from the exoskeleton. The actual feeding process (from head penetration to removal of the head) takes about 7 min. O. dorsalis is only the third species within the Prosorhochmidae for which the feeding behavior has been documented. The other two are terrestrial species, and are also suctorial.  相似文献

Ocean acidification is projected to inhibit the biogenic production of calcium carbonate skeletons in marine organisms. Antarctic waters represent a natural environment in which to examine the long‐term effects of carbonate undersaturation on calcification in marine predators. King crabs (Decapoda: Anomura: Lithodidae), which currently inhabit the undersaturated environment of the continental slope off Antarctica, are potential invasives on the Antarctic shelf as oceanic temperatures rise. Here, we describe the chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of the exoskeleton of the deep‐water Antarctic lithodid Paralomis birsteini and compare our measurements with two decapod species from shallow water at lower latitudes, Callinectes sapidus (Brachyura: Portunidae) and Cancer borealis (Brachyura: Cancridae). In Paralomis birsteini, crabs deposit proportionally more calcium carbonate in their predatory chelae than their protective carapaces, compared with the other two crab species. When exoskeleton thickness and microhardness were compared between the chelae and carapace, the magnitude of the difference between these body regions was significantly greater in P. birsteini than in the other species tested. Hence, there appeared to be a greater disparity in P. birsteini in overall investment in calcium carbonate structures among regions of the exoskeleton. The imperatives of prey consumption and predator avoidance may be influencing the deposition of calcium to different parts of the exoskeleton in lithodids living in an environment undersaturated with respect to calcium carbonate.  相似文献

Ontogenic development and classification of tentaculitids at high systematic levels are reevaluated in the light of new findings on shell structure and morphology of larval parts, and these features are here regarded as being of primary importance for taxonomy. Class Tentaculita Bouček, 1964 is subdivided into two subclasses, of which subclass Chionioconarida Farsan, 1994 is distinguished by a tubular larval process closed at the apex and covered with microrings. The process is differentiated into a prolarval, metalarval and epilarval part, of which the latter coincides with metamorphosis. Morphology of the larval parts suggests that metamorphosis proceeds in two different manners, giving rise to superorders within this subclass. Within superorder Trompetoconarida Farsan, 1994 a bilaterally symmetrical larval cone develops with an aperture oblique to the long axis of the conch; following metamorphosis the conch becomes radially symmetrical and the aperture perpendicular to the axis; secondary shell, septa and pseudopunctae develop in the adult phase, and the structure of the shell is lamellar. In contrast, within the second superorder, Lirioconarida Farsan, 1994 the epilarval tube develops into a larval bulb with no changes in symmetry and position of the aperture; secondary shell, septa and pseudopuncta are absent. The microstructure of the shell is lamellar in the larval part whereas in postlarval parts it is either sigmoidal or lamellar. The subclass Dacryoconarida Fisher, 1962 possesses a subspherical, tear- or drop-like embryonic chamber which may have a caudal process. The microstructure of the embryonic chamber is variable within this group, being lamellar in some taxa whereas in others, a single layer of shell is present. The postembryonic parts of the lamellar forms possess nacreous or sigmoidal structures.  相似文献

The Asian colobines,Trachypithecus obscurus andT. cirstantus, eat plant-based diets containing 55–80% leaves. The structural polysaccharides in leaves and other plant parts require microbial fermentation before they can be used as an energy source by the monkeys. The major compartments of the gastro-intestinal tract ofTrachypithecus are a voluminous haustrated stomach, a long small itnestine and capacious haustrated hindgut, all of which contribute to the digestive strategy of these two species. Results of digesta marker passage studies indicate there is prolonged retention of digesta for fermentation in both the stomach and haustrated colon. The digestive strategy of these colobines is defined as gastro-colic fermentation, unlike that of other forestomach fermenters in which the hindgut fermentation is of secondary importance.  相似文献

We investigated the spikes on the outer shell surface of the endolithic gastrochaenid bivalve genus Spengleria with a view to understand the mechanism by which they form and evaluate their homology with spikes in other heterodont and palaeoheterodont bivalves. We discovered that spike formation varied in mechanism between different parts of the valve. In the posterior region, spikes form within the translucent layer of the periostracum but separated from the calcareous part of the shell. By contrast those spikes in the anterior and ventral region, despite also forming within the translucent periostracal layer, become incorporated into the outer shell layer. Spikes in the posterior area of Spengleria mytiloides form only on the outer surface of the periostracum and are therefore, not encased in periostracal material. Despite differences in construction between these gastrochaenid spikes and those of other heterodont and palaeoheterodont bivalves, all involve calcification of the inner translucent periostracal layer which may indicate a deeper homology.  相似文献

Summary The proteinaceous shells of Centropyxis hirsuta contain a relatively high concentration of manganese in an amorphous state. The concentrations of manganese fill the alveoli which are characteristic of the shell structure. Observations based on cultured animals and subsequently examined by X-ray diffraction, a solid state energy dispersive X-ray analyser, and an analytical electron microscope, lead to the conclusions that manganese is selectively absorbed by Centropyxis hirsuta and deposited in the shell.  相似文献

The strength of molluscan shells has been shown to vary in adaptive ways in a number of species and one of the main factors thought to be involved is shell-crushing by predators. A recent study found that the sibling species of flat periwinkle Littorina obtusata and Littorina mariae showed significant differences in the rates at which shell strength increased with shell length in specimens which had been collected from the same location, where the species were sympatric. This paper describes differences between the shells of the two species from a number of localities around Milford Haven in Dyfed, Wales, and local geographical variation in the shells. Littorina mariae, which is normally found at lower tidal levels than L. obtusata, matures at a smaller shell length. Both species reinforce the shell as they grow since shell strength, determined as the maximum force applied by a hydraulic tensile testing machine before the shell cracked, is strongly positively allometric; it increases at a rate close to the cube of shell length whilst isometric growth would result in strength increasing in proportion to the square of shell length. Because L. mariae matures earlier and reinforces the shell at a smaller size, the mature shell of L. mariae is substantially stronger on average than that of a similar sized but immature L. obtusata. At maturity the shell strengths of the two species are not very different despite the substantial difference in mean shell length. Strength varies significantly from shore to shore, and with the level of the shore from which the animals were collected. Strength increases down the shore in both species. Shell strength decreases with exposure to wave action in L. mariae but increases with exposure in L. obtusata; there is also substantial shore-to-shore variation which is not explained by exposure. Path analysis was used to explore the relationship between shell strength and other measured shell parameters (mass, length, height, thickness). The best predictor of shell strength in both species is a parameter which is heavily positively loaded on LN (shell mass) and strongly offset by negative loadings on LN (shell length) and LN (shell height). This is logical because for a given shell length a heavier shell will be thicker and stronger, whilst for a given shell mass a bigger shell will be thinner and therefore weaker. Such differential variation of shell mass and shell length explains most of the geographical variation observed in shell strength; shells are stronger in snails collected from one place than from another because, for the same shell length they are heavier or, to put it the other way, because at the same shell mass, they are smaller.  相似文献

牡蛎礁是生态系统服务价值高、但退化最严重及受关注度最高的海洋生境之一,牡蛎礁修复亦成为国际海洋生态修复的热点。掌握牡蛎自然种群状况及动态变化是评估牡蛎礁修复效果的基础。目前,我国天然牡蛎礁的牡蛎种群状况相关的背景资料较为缺乏。在黄河口西南侧的小岛河河口新发现天然活体牡蛎礁,但该牡蛎礁曾被大规模的商业采捕,亟需推进针对性的保护和修复研究工作。基于2021年11月对该牡蛎礁开展的牡蛎种群生态调查,分析其种类组成、年龄结构及生长特征。结果显示:该牡蛎礁分布有近江牡蛎(Crassostrea ariakensis)和长牡蛎(Crassostrea gigas)。牡蛎礁上以活体牡蛎为主,死亡牡蛎壳体数仅占6.1%-6.7%。活体牡蛎的密度和生物量分别为(2811±778)个/m2和(21.97±30.43)kg/m2,近江牡蛎较多,其密度和生物量分别占比55.7%和76.4%。近江牡蛎和长牡蛎的年龄分别介于0+-4+ 龄和0+-2+ 龄,它们都以壳高介于30-40 mm及壳质量<5 g的0+ 龄个体数量居多(>80%)。近江牡蛎的壳体形态参数均值都高于同龄组长牡蛎的相应值。两种牡蛎壳体均呈负异速增长,不同龄级的壳体延展方向不同。拟合von Bertalanffy生长方程得到,近江牡蛎和长牡蛎的渐近壳高分别为286 mm和173 mm,估算的拐点年龄分别为5.47 龄和2.56 龄,两种牡蛎的生长曲线分布存在极显著差异(P<0.001)。以上结果表明,小岛河河口的天然牡蛎礁的牡蛎自然种群资源较丰富,具有高密度、低龄和低死亡率等特点,有较好的活力和扩张潜力,有利于被采捕后的礁体的恢复。两种牡蛎中,近江牡蛎因其具有较高的生物量和较长的生长年龄,对礁体形成和扩繁可能更为重要。建议对该天然牡蛎礁及牡蛎种群开展周期>3年的原位保护、修复和连续监测计划。  相似文献

Growth performance of the Antarctic bivalve Laternula elliptica was examined both by shell microstructural observation and by applying a fluorescent substance, tetracycline, as a shell growth marker. The shell was composed of two calcareous layers: the thick outer layer was homogeneous or granular in structure and the thin inner layer was nacreous. The architecture of Antarctic L. elliptica was different from that of temperate L. marilina, and the ratio of thickness between the outer and inner layers appeared to be different. The growth rate of the nacreous layer was analyzed to be very low. High correlations were found between the major axis of chondrophore and both shell length and shell dry weight, respectively. It is suggested that the chondrophore is an appropriate growth indicator, and combining the information of growth increments with the fluorescent method may be useful in estimating the bivalve growth performance in the Antarctic sea.  相似文献

Alatoform bivalves are a polyphyletic group characterized by antero‐posteriorly compressed shells and a ventro‐lateral wing originating from a tight fold of the shell wall. This bizarre shell morphology is interpreted as an adaptation for algal photosymbiosis in heliophilous bivalves. The group contains the living heart cockle Corculum together with four extinct genera ranging in age from the Permian to the Jurassic. The Jurassic alatoform bivalve is Opisoma, which has an aragonitic shell that is divided into two regions, both with different functions: one for stabilization, the other for hosting symbionts. The dorsal part of the shell is massive and played the stabilization role. The ventral part has a very thin and fragile shell that permitted the transmission of light into the internal tissues harbouring photosymbionts. The morphology of this delicate ventral part has thus far remained obscure, due to lack of preservation. Accumulations of Opisoma excavatum Boehm with exquisitely preserved shells containing the fragile winged ventral parts are common within the Pliensbachian shallow‐water, lagoonal carbonate succession of the Rotzo Formation of northern Italy. The wings have internal curved chambers limited by septa parallel to the wing edge. The shell of the ventral part consists of irregular fibrous prismatic and homogeneous structures which progressively infill the chambers. As the chambered wings are analogous structures among alatoform bivalves, they are no longer considered a taxonomic character. According to the observed shell orientation in the field and the consequent organization of the soft parts, Opisoma had an opisthogyrate shell.  相似文献

Nautilus species are the only remaining cephalopods with an external shell. Targeted heavily by the shell trade across their distribution area, these species have a poorly known population structure and genetics. Molecular techniques have been used to assess levels of inter- and intra-population genetic diversity in isolated populations of Nautilus in the northern sections of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia and in the Coral Sea. Distinct populations, physically separated by depths in excess of 1,000 m were examined. RAPD analysis of genetic differences showed limited differentiation of the “Northern GBR” populations and the “Coral Sea” populations. Discrimination between the two geographic groups was observed from these data. In addition, partial sequencing of the CoxI gene region, yielded 575 bp of sequence, which was aligned for 43 samples and phylogenetic trees constructed to examine genetic relationships. Two distinct clades were resolved in the resulting trees, representing the “Northern GBR” and “Coral Sea” population groups. Inter- and intra-population relationships are presented and discussed. The differentiation of the Nautilus populations from the Northern section of the Great Barrier Reef and those from the Coral Sea were supported by two distinctly different methodologies and the significance of this separation and the potential evolutionary divergence of these two population groups is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The peripheral nervous system of embryos homozygous for prd, ftz, en and bxd was examined for defects and transformations in the segment-specific pattern of sensilla and peripheral nerves. This analysis permitted me to assign a distinct subset of sensilla to any of the three genetically and morphologically defined compartments s, a and p of each segment. In the wild-type embryonic segments, sensory axons deriving from sensilla of different compartments form a part of the common peripheral nerves. In the composite segments of prd and ftz mutant embryos, subsets of sensilla of two neighbouring segments are combined. Nevertheless, the axons of sensilla of different segmental identity are able to fasciculate and to form afferent nerves, which connect in an apparently normal fashion to the central nervous system. It is concluded that in the Drosophila embryo compartmental and segmental identity of sensory organs has no influence on the trajectories of sensory axons.  相似文献

Cell-to-cell communication via gap junctions provides a pathway for the transfer of small molecules and ions which may be significant for control of metabolic cooperation, cell proliferation, and differentiation. We have assessed the patterns of gap junctional communication in embryos of the mollusc Lymnaea stagnalis during the subdivision of the post-trochal ectoderm into developmental domains. We have microinjected the tracer Lucifer Yellow CH and subsequently analyzed its transfer to other cells. The post-trochal ectoderm of molluscs develops the shell field, the foot, and the stomodeum anlagen. We have found that the cells within the separate anlagen are well dye-coupled but poorly coupled to cells of adjacent anlagen. These results indicate that in Lymnaea embryos the specification of the different developmental domains is associated with the development of corresponding dye-coupling compartments.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of dopamine-like immunoreactive neurons is described for the brain of the bee, Apis mellifera L., following the application of a pre-embedding technique on Vibratome sections. Immunoreactive somata are grouped into seven clusters, mainly situated in the protocerebrum. Immunoreactive interneurons have been detected in the different neuropilar compartments, except for the optic lobe neuropils. Strong immunoreactivity is found in the upper division of the central body, in parts of the stalk and in the -lobe layers of the mushroom bodies. A dense network of many immunoreactive fibres surrounds the mushroom bodies and the central body. It forms a number of interhemispheric commissures/chiasmata, projecting partly into the contralateral mushroom body and central body. The lateral protocerebral neuropil contains some large wide-field-neurons. The antennal-lobe glomeruli receive fine projections of multiglomerular dopamine-like immunoreactive interneurons.  相似文献

公认食品安全的酿酒酵母(Saccharomyces cerevisiae)是合成生物学中被广泛研究的底盘细胞,常作为生产高值或大宗化学品的微生物细胞工厂。近年来,通过各种代谢工程改造策略,已有大量化学品的合成途径在酿酒酵母中建立并优化,且部分化学品具备了产业化价值。作为真核生物,酿酒酵母具有完整的细胞内膜系统及其组成的复杂细胞器区室,而这些细胞器区室往往含有某些化学品合成所必需的较高浓度前体底物(如线粒体中的乙酰辅酶A),或更加充足的酶、辅因子、能量等,可为目标产物的生物合成提供更适宜的物理、化学环境,但同时不同细胞器的结构特点有时也成为特定化合物合成的障碍。为此,研究人员在深入分析不同细胞器自身特点的基础上,结合目标化学品合成途径与细胞器之间的适配度,对细胞器开展了大量针对性改造工作以提高产物合成效率。本文详细综述了酿酒酵母中线粒体、过氧化物酶体、高尔基体、内质网、脂滴和液泡等细胞器的途径改造及优化策略,以及利用细胞器区室化合成化学品的研究进展,并对目前存在的困难和挑战以及未来研究方向进行了总结与展望。  相似文献

The tubes of the polyp stages of all known species of the family Nausithoidae have been examined to find characters useful for specific identification. Such characters comprise both internal and external structures of the chitinous exoskeleton, measurements of the periderm, and the shape of the tubes defined by the Formquotient. A key for the polyp generation is given based on these characters. The long-term rearing of several species and elucidation of their life cycles has also enabled a key to the medusa generation of the Nausithoidae to be constructed. Stephanoscyphistoma gen. nov. is proposed for the polyps of all species of coronates of uncertain medusa genus.  相似文献

Summary The thiolase family is a widespread group of proteins present in prokaryotes and three cellular compartments of eukaryotes. This fact makes this family interesting in order to study the evolutionary process of eukaryotes. Using the sequence of peroxisomal thiolase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae recently obtained by us and the other known thiolase sequences, a phylogenetic analysis has been carried out. It shows that all these proteins derived from a primitive enzyme, present in the common ancestor of eubacteria and eukaryotes, which evolved into different specialized thiolases confined to various cell compartments. Variation in the shape of the shell in Littorina saxatilis Olivi has been shown to be due largely to the same variables on both the west and the south coasts of Britain, and it exhibits various clines. Two important aspects are the size of the aperture, which becomes relatively larger from the Isle of Man southwards to Cornwall and eastwards from Devon to the Isle of Wight, and the jugosity of the shell, which increases with distance from Cornwall both northwards as far as the Isle of Man and eastwards as far as Kent. Superimposed on the clines are domains of shape, notably one in Lewis/Harris, where the shells have a relatively large aperture, which is long and narrow, coupled with a rather globose second whorl. The local and geographical aspects of shell shape variation are discussed.  相似文献
