1 Mature larvae of the Oriental fruit moth (OFM) Grapholita molesta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) and the Indianmeal moth (IMM) Plodia interpunctella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) leave their food source in search of suitable pupation sites in which to spin cocoons. These sites are typically well-concealed cracks and crevices within the environment. Such cocooning behaviour is also observed in larvae of the codling moth (CM) Cydia pomonella (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), which aggregate prior to pupation in response to a pheromone blend produced by cocoon-spinning conspecific larvae.
2 In laboratory experiments, we tested whether cocoon-spinning OFM and IMM larvae produce aggregation pheromones and whether CM larvae are cross-attracted to closely-related OFM larvae.
3 Fifth-instar OFM and IMM larvae were not attracted to, or arrested by, cocoon-spinning conspecifics. Moreover, fifth-instar CM larvae were not cross-attracted to either cocoon-spinning OFM or IMM larvae.
4 Analyses of volatiles released from cocoon-spinning OFM and IMM larvae revealed that both OFM and IMM lack components that are present in the aggregation pheromone of CM larvae. This information may help explain why CM larvae are not cross-attracted to cocooning OFM or IMM larvae.  相似文献

在室内研究核型多角体病毒(HaSNPV)感染对棉铃虫Helicoverpa armigera(Htibner)幼虫同类相残行为的影响。结果显示:感病棉铃虫随感病程度的加重,越容易被健康棉铃虫残食,而自然死亡的感病棉铃虫、冻死的感病棉铃虫和冻死的健康棉铃虫三者被健康棉铃虫残食的百分率无显著差异。表明感病棉铃虫和病虫尸体更易于被健康棉铃虫残食,是由于棉铃虫体力减弱而失去反击能力,不是由于病毒本身的影响。以健康棉铃虫、感病棉铃虫为残食者,冻死的病虫为被残食者,相残率无显著差异,表明病毒并未改变棉铃虫残食同类的天性。残食病虫的健康棉铃虫的化蛹率和羽化率均低于正常的健康棉铃虫,残食者为相残行为付出了很高的代价。  相似文献

Abstract.  Even though overwintering larvae of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis , are freeze-tolerant, they cannot survive below −30 °C. Furthermore, nondiapausing larvae cannot survive freezing. However, the cause of death due to freezing is unclear. To identify the cause of death by freezing in larvae, those tissues most injured by low temperatures are identified using the vital stain trypan blue. In overwintering larvae, the midgut of dead larvae stains blue, and remarkable colour density differences between dead and surviving larvae are observed in the midgut. In nondiapausing larvae incubated at −10 °C for several hours, the fat body of dead larvae is strongly stained. Furthermore, increases in mortality with treatment time correspond with increases in the area of the fat body stained. Sterile nondiapausing larvae with lower supercooling points, below −20 °C, do not freeze at −10 °C and survive the treatment. However, all the larvae die when subjected to inoculative freezing at −10 °C, and the fat body stains blue. These results suggest that the midgut in overwintering larvae and the fat body in nondiapausing larvae have the lowest tolerance to freezing.  相似文献

Cell numbers and cellular composition were examined in infusoriform larvae of 44 species of dicyemid mesozoans belonging to 6 genera; Conocyema, Dicyema, Dicyemennea, Dicyemodeca, Microcyema, and Pseudicyema. In addition, literature on infusoriform larvae of another 20 species was reviewed. Infusoriform larvae consist of a constant cell number which is species-specific. Small interspecific variations are found in total cell numbers, 35, 37, 39, 41 and 42. The most frequent cell number encountered in infusoriform larvae studied is either 37 or 39. Infusoriform larvae with 35 cells are found in three genera. Infusoriform larvae with 37 cells are found in four genera. Infusoriform larvae with 39 cells are found in four genera. Most differences in total cell numbers are due to the absence or presence of particular ventral cells. In all infusoriform larvae, the lateral, dorsal and caudal areas are cell constant, whereas in the apical and ventral areas a distinct and variable configuration of cells are present. In cellular composition, a total of 29 cells (15 cell types) were recognized in all infusoriform larvae examined. Additional cell types are characteristic of a relatively few species. Even in infusoriform larvae with the same total cell numbers, cellular composition varies by species. Thus, there are 7 variations of cellular composition in infusoriform larvae with 37 cells. Differences in larval cell numbers and types do not warrant traditional generic separation of dicyemids.  相似文献

The physiological expression of a short-day-induced dormancy (Oligopause) of 4th-instar Chironomus plumosus larvae was investigated by measuring the oxygen consumption. By means of a polarographic continuous-flow respirometer the oxygen consumption of single larvae or groups of larvae (up to 5) could be measured continuously over a period of several hours. The oxygen consumption of dormant larvae is lower than in non-dormant larvae: in relation to the individual it is reduced by about 13, in relation to 1 g of dry weight by about 12. Dormant larvae are heavier than non-dormant larvae. In the dormant larvae, the proportion of dry weight to total weight is higher than in the non-dormant larvae. The increased proportion of dry weight is composed of a size-specific (dormancy-independent) and a dormancy-specific component. Independent of the sex and dormancy state, the larger larvae have a lower oxygen consumption per weight unit than the smaller larvae. A sex-specific difference can be observed: when animals with identical oxygen consumption per weight unit are compared, the females are considerably heavier than the males.  相似文献

Summary Field studies of dispersal by first instar gypsy moth larvae indicate that almost all larvae undergo an initial dispersal episode. However, in laboratory studies large larvae (from large eggs) disperse more frequently than small larvae (from small eggs) in the presence of favored food. Large larvae may be better adapted for dispersal. When larvae encounter unacceptable food or are denied food, larvae disperse more frequently and dispersal by small larvae is nearly as frequent as dispersal by large larvae. Larval Parasitengona are typically parasites, yet at least 29 species of water mites and one species of Trombidiidae forgo larval feeding and any association with a host. Species with non-feeding larvae are isolated cases within species groups or genera where the remaining species have parasitic larvae. Species without larval parasitism occur in at least 14 genera, eight families and four superfamilies of water mites; the loss of larval parasitism is presumably polyphyletic, having occurred at least 21 times. Lineages of water mites with non-feeding larvae frequently exist in parallel with almost identical populations or species that have parasitic larvae. Thus, there is tremendous potential for studies comparing the relative merits of the two life history strategies. Comparisons indicate that adults from lineages with non-parasitic larvae produce smaller numbers of larger eggs; the extra nutrition included in larger eggs permits the larvae to forgo feeding. Non-feeding larvae frequently have wider dorsal plates but reduced leg length, setal length and sclerotization when compared to parasitic larvae from sister lineages. The adults of lineages with non-feeding larvae are frequently smaller in comparison to adults of sister lineages with parasitic larvae. There is no apparent pattern in relation to habitat: lineages lacking larval parasitism occur in streams, temporary ponds and the littoral and planktonic regions of permanent lakes. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998  相似文献

Synopsis Relatively little is known of the pelagic portion of the life history of butterflyfishes. Eggs are small (<1 mm), pelagic and hatch in less than 30 hours. Most species pass through a so-called tholichthys larval interval characterized by elaborate, distinctive head spination:Coradion larvae have different head spination. While older chaetodontid larvae can be identified by adult characters, young (preflexion) larvae generally cannot now be identified below family. In tropical plankton studies chaetodontid larvae averaged <0.1% of larvae captured, and occurred in 13% of samples. This rarity is a major hindrance to further work, but is not unexpected in view of adult abundance. Larvae of a few taxa are most abundant in shelf waters, but larvae of many chaetodontid taxa seem to be most abundant in oceanic waters. In either case, waters near reefs have the fewest chaetodontid larvae. Offshore maxima of larvae appear to exist a few kilometers seaward of Great Barrier Reef ribbon reefs. Chaetodontid larvae may prefer the upper portion of the water column. Both size and age at settlement vary widely within the family and the large genusChaetodon, and the latter varies widely within species. Average size at settlement is less than 20 mm and age is less than 40 days. No correlation was found between size and age at settlement. Behaviour and feeding of chaetodontid larvae are essentially unstudied. Chaetodontid larvae seem to be least abundant in winter. The implications of these conclusions are discussed and some suggestions for further research are made. In all areas more work is needed.  相似文献

Abstract The age‐dependent cold hardiness profile of Ostrinia nubilalis is compared between nondiapausing and diapausing larvae, as well as with field‐collected larvae. The results suggest that both cold tolerance and accumulation of cryoprotectants depends upon the age of O. nubilalis larva. Late fifth‐instar nondiapausing larvae are more cold tolerant than younger fifth‐instars because they show enhanced ability to withstand sub‐zero temperatures. No appreciable difference is observed between the experimental groups of diapausing larvae as far as their supercooling ability and tolerance at sub‐zero temperatures above the supercooling point. In general, both field‐collected and diapausing larvae are more cold tolerant than nondiapausing larvae, indicating a direct link between diapause and cold hardiness. The age of diapausing larvae affects the ability to accumulate glycerol. Glycerol levels of 45‐day‐old diapausing larvae are significantly higher (2.7‐fold) compared with 90‐day‐old diapausing larvae. Moreover, diapausing larvae display a five‐ to 13‐fold higher glycerol content compared with nondiapausing larvae. There is a trend for an age‐dependent cold hardiness profile in O. nubilalis and further tests that could demonstrate a causal relationship between age and cold tolerance are needed.  相似文献

Laboratory studies of the behavior of first stage zoea larvae of the sand crab Emerita analoga Stimpson have shown that while newly-hatched larvae are strongly photopositive, this response lasts only about four hours, as the larvae rapidly become photonegative. After becoming photonegative, a large proportion of the larvae remain so throughout the first four days of life if they are fed Artemia nauplii; if starved, the larvae become significantly more photopositive than when fed. Both the photopositive response of newly-hatched larvae and the reversal to photopositive behavior in response to starvation are only apparent under horizontal test conditions. Increases in hydrostatic pressure stimulate swimming activity among the larvae; responsiveness to pressure being greatest at hatching and decreasing thereafter. The pressure response is strongly oriented to light; pressure-stimulated larvae will swim towards a light source regardless of whether this involves upward, downward, or horizontal motion. Experiments suggest that the pressure response provides the primary mechanism for depth regulation among young larvae; gravity and light may augment the pressure ‘sense’ by serving as primary orientational cues. The nutritional status of an individual larva may alter its depth-regulatory capabilities, but this effect is not yet clear.  相似文献

转Bt基因抗虫棉对 3 ,4,5龄棉铃虫幼虫的抗性表现形式为拒食作用 ,且随幼虫龄期的增加拒食作用明显降低 ,其中对 5龄幼虫的拒食作用很低。取食Bt棉后 ,3 ,4,5龄棉铃虫幼虫中肠消化酶比活力均较对照有所减退 ,且随幼虫龄期的增加减退率明显降低 ,其中对 5龄幼虫减退率最低。由此 ,解释了Bt棉对 3龄及 3龄以上棉铃虫幼虫抗性表现形式、抗性随不同幼虫龄期的差异性 ,及其抗性差异性的消化机理。  相似文献

Previous studies of the swimming endurance abilities of late-stage larvae of reef fishes have used laboratory swimming chambers and, with one exception, unfed larvae. Based on the exceptional study, we predicted that fed larvae should have much greater endurance than previously reported for unfed larvae. We tested the swimming endurance of the fed late-stage larvae of 6 pomacentrid species and found that all could swim at least twice as long as unfed larvae. The 3 species with larger larvae (12–14mm standard length: SL) all grew during these experiments in spite of being forced to swim 23.3h per day. The 3 species with smaller larvae (10–11mm SL) did not show consistent growth. Unfed laboratory measures of swimming endurance are, therefore, very conservative, and are probably more of an indication of the reserves available to the larvae than a realistic indication of how far the larvae are capable of swimming in the field.  相似文献

American foulbrood is a widespread disease of honeybee larvae caused by the spore-forming bacterium Paenibacillus larvae subsp. larvae. Spores represent the infectious stage; when ingested by a larva they germinate in the midgut. The rod-shaped vegetative forms penetrate the larva's intestinal tissue and start multiplying rapidly, which finally kills the larva. Spores fed to adult honeybees, however, do not harm the bees. We investigated this phenomenon. Specifically, we studied the influence of the adult honeybee midgut on the vegetative growth and on the germination of spores of P. larvae larvae. We focused on two groups of adult workers that are likely to have large numbers of spores in their gastrointestinal tracts in infected colonies: middle-aged bees, which are known to remove or cannibalize dead larvae and clean brood cells, and winterbees, which do not have frequent chances to defecate. We found that midgut extract from winterbees and worker-aged bees of different colonies almost completely inhibited the growth of the vegetative stage of P. larvae larvae and suppressed the germination of spores. The inhibiting substance or substances from the adult midgut are very temperature stable: they still show about 60% of their growth-inhibiting capacity against this bacterium after 15 min at 125 degrees C. We established a method to test growth-inhibiting factors against P. larvae larvae in vitro.  相似文献

为了阐明二化螟Chilo supprressalis滞育幼虫的分子特征及滞育期间保护酶活性的变化规律, 本研究应用Trizol法、 总量DNA提取法和蛋白定量试剂盒, 测定了在长光周期16L∶8D和25℃下发育的非滞育老熟幼虫、 在短光周期12L∶12D 和25℃下诱导滞育51 d的幼虫(称为滞育0个月)、 滞育1, 2和3个月幼虫的核酸含量和总蛋白含量; 同时应用试剂盒测定了老熟幼虫、 滞育0, 1和2个月的二化螟幼虫5种保护酶(POD, CAT, SOD, LDH和ATP酶)的活性。结果表明: 滞育幼虫的总RNA含量显著低于非滞育的老熟幼虫(P<0.05), 而滞育1, 2和3个月的幼虫之间没有显著差异(P≥0.05)。老熟幼虫的总DNA含量显著高于滞育幼虫(P<0.05)。老熟幼虫的RNA/DNA比值较低, 滞育幼虫的RNA/DNA比值较高, RNA/DNA比值随着滞育时间的推移呈现出先上升后下降的趋势。滞育期大于1个月的幼虫中蛋白含量均显著高于非滞育的老熟幼虫(P<0.05), 而滞育1, 2和3个月的幼虫之间没有显著差异(P≥0.05)。二化螟幼虫体内5种保护酶活性随发育阶段不同而存在差异。滞育幼虫中POD, CAT和SOD的活性随滞育时间延长而逐渐增强, 滞育2个月幼虫中的活性最高, 而非滞育老熟幼虫中的活性最低; LDH和ATP酶的活性则相反, 非滞育老熟幼虫中的活性最高, 滞育2个月幼虫中的活性最低。这些结果说明, 总RNA和DNA含量降低、 RNA/DNA比值先升后降、 总蛋白含量升高以及保护酶活性的变化是二化螟幼虫滞育过程中的主要生理特征。  相似文献

星齿蛉属Protohermes隶属于广翅目Megaloptera齿蛉科Corydalidae,是一类原始的完全变态昆虫,幼虫水生,常作为指示生物用于水质监测。本文对湘西峒河流域两种星齿蛉幼虫进行了分子鉴定和体表呼吸结构观测。结果表明两种星齿蛉幼虫COⅠ基因序列分别与花边星齿蛉Protohermes costalis和炎黄星齿蛉Protohermes xanthodes同源性较高;遗传距离分析和系统发育分析进一步证实两种星齿蛉幼虫分别属于花边星齿蛉和炎黄星齿蛉,分子鉴定结果与成虫形态鉴定结果一致。花边星齿蛉和炎黄星齿蛉幼虫体表呼吸结构气门、毛簇、气管鳃和臀足侧突均与气管相连,毛簇是主要的水下呼吸结构。本研究结果为峒河流域星齿蛉昆虫资源的保护和开发利用提供了科学数据。  相似文献

1. Environmental cues associated with prey are known to increase predator foraging efficiency. Ladybird larvae are major predators of aphids. The sugary excretion of aphids (honeydew) has been proposed to serve as a prey‐associated cue for ladybird larvae. 2. Ladybird larvae are regularly found on the ground moving between plants or after falling off plants. The use of prey‐associated cues would be particularly beneficial for ladybird larvae on the ground in that such cues would help them to decide which plants to climb because aphids are patchily distributed within as well as amongst plants and, as a result, many plants are either not infested with aphids or do not host an aphid species of high nutritional value for ladybird larvae. 3. Laboratory experiments with larvae of Hippodamia convergens Guérin‐Méneville (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were carried out to explore whether honeydew accumulated on the ground is used as a foraging cue. The study also investigated whether, if honeydew is a foraging cue, larvae show differential responses to honeydew of high‐quality prey Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris compared with that of low‐quality prey Aphis fabae Scopoli (both: Homoptera: Aphididae). 4. Hippodamia convergens larvae stayed longer in areas containing honeydew but did not engage in longer bouts of searching. Furthermore, larvae did not distinguish between honeydew from high‐ and low‐quality aphid prey.  相似文献

LDH isoenzymes of Trichinella larvae isolated from experimentally infected guinea pigs were investigated between days 30 and 400 inclusive after infection. It was found that on the 30 th day after infection the larvae have two isoenzymes while from the 40th to the 400 th day--three isoenzymes. The first of the latter is of fast responce and is located in the anod area near the indicator while the two others are of slow response and are located between the isoenzymes LDH-3 and LDH-5 of the muscular tissue of guinea pigs. This indicates that energetic metabolism of Trichinella larvae proceeds in muscular tissues by aerobic and anaerobic way. Since electrophoretic specificity of LDH-isoenzymes of Trichinella larvae differ from that of LDH-isoenzymes of muscular tissue the former are apparently characteristic of Trichinella larvae.  相似文献

The mechanisms by which reef fish larvae locate settlement habitat at the end of their pelagic phase are unclear. We used an in situ binary choice chamber and an artificial source of reef sound to determine whether pomacentrid larvae can use ambient sound to locate reefs. Larvae were caught in light traps and then placed in a submerged binary choice chamber with an artificial source of reef sound ~80 m from one end of the chamber. At night, larvae moved towards the sound source; during the day, larvae showed no preference. These results suggest that pomacentrid larvae can detect reef sound and are capable of directional hearing. While other studies have shown that reef fish larvae respond to reef sound, and that the adults of some species can localize underwater sound sources, the localization of underwater sound by fish larvae has not been demonstrated previously.Communicated by Ecological Editor P.F. The infectivity of newborn Trichinella spiralis larvae of different ages was studied in normal rats. Newborn larvae collected after incubation of adult worms in vitro for 2, 12, or 24 hr were injected intravenously (i.v.) into normal AO rats in 3 separate recipient groups. All recipient rats developed strikingly similar numbers of muscle larvae 20 days later. The susceptibility to immunity by newborn larvae of different ages was also studied. No difference was found when degree of protection was compared by assessing muscle larvae burden or peritoneal anti-newborn larvae effects after injection of newborn larvae of different ages either i.v. or intraperitoneally into immunized recipient rats. We conclude that newborn larvae of any age up to 24 hr have similar infectivity in normal rats and are equally susceptible to anti-newborn larvae immunity in vivo.  相似文献
