Little information is available on energy metabolism during exercise in girls, particularly the contribution of exogenous carbohydrate (CHO(exo)). The purpose of this study was to determine substrate utilization during exercise with and without CHO(exo) intake in healthy girls. Twelve-yr-old preadolescent (YG; n = 12) and 14-yr-old adolescent (OG; n = 10) girls consumed flavored water (WT) or (13)C-enriched 6% CHO (CT) while cycling for 60 min at approximately 70% maximal aerobic power (Vo(2max)). Substrate utilization was calculated for the final 15 min of exercise. CHO(exo) decreased fat oxidation by approximately 50% in YG but not in OG (P < 0.001) and decreased endogenous CHO oxidation by approximately 15% in OG but not in YG (P = 0.006). Endogenous CHO oxidation was lower in YG than in OG regardless of trial (P < or = 0.01), whereas fat oxidation was higher in YG only during WT (P < 0.001). CHO(exo) oxidation rate was similar between YG and OG (7.1 +/- 0.5 and 6.8 +/- 0.4 mg.kg(-1).min(-1), respectively, P = 0.67), contributing approximately 19% to total energy expenditure. Serum estradiol levels in all girls correlated with fat (r = -0.50 to -0.59, P = 0.03 to 0.005) and endogenous CHO oxidation (r = 0.50 to 0.63, P = 0.03 to 0.005) but not with CHO(exo) oxidation (r = -0.09, P = 0.71). We conclude that CHO(exo) influences endogenous substrate utilization in an age-dependent manner in healthy girls but that total CHO(exo) oxidation during exercise is not different between YG and OG. Our results also point to potential sex-related differences in energy substrate utilization even during childhood.  相似文献

The range of exercise intensities that elicit high fat oxidation rates (FOR) in youth and the influence of pubertal status on peak FOR are unknown. In a longitudinal design, we compared FOR over a range of exercise intensities in a small cohort of developing prepubertal male subjects. Five boys all at Tanner stage 1 (ages 11-12 yr) and nine men (ages 20-26 yr) underwent an incremental cycle ergometry test to volitional exhaustion. FOR curves were determined from indirect calorimetry during the final 30 s of each increment. The same protocol was duplicated annually in the boys as they progressed through puberty. The peak FOR was considerably higher (P<0.05) in boys at Tanner 1 (8.6+/-1.5 mg.kg lean body mass(-1).min(-1)) (mean+/-SD) compared with men (4.2+/-1.1 mg.kg lean body mass(-1).min(-1)). FOR dropped as boys developed through puberty (Tanner 2/3 peak rate=7.6+/-0.6 mg.kg lean body mass(-1).min(-1); Tanner 4 peak rate=5.4+/-1.8 mg.kg lean body mass(-1).min(-1), main effect of Tanner stage; P<0.05) to the levels found in men (not significant). The exercise intensity that elicited peak FOR was higher in the boys at Tanner 1 [56+/-6% peak aerobic power (VO2 peak)] than in men (31+/-4% VO2 peak) (P<0.001). This value tended to decrease by Tanner stage 4 (45+/-10% VO2 peak, main effect of Tanner stage; P=0.06). We conclude that, compared with men, prepubertal boys have higher relative FOR throughout a wide range of exercise intensities and that FOR drops as boys develop through puberty.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine plasma glucose kinetics and substrate oxidation in men and women during exercise relative to the lactate threshold (LT). Subjects cycled for 25 min at 70 and 90% of O(2) uptake (VO(2)) at LT (70 and 90% LT, respectively). Plasma glucose appearance (R(a)) and disappearance (R(d)) were determined with a primed constant infusion of [6,6-(2)H]glucose. There were no significant differences in glucose R(a) between men [22.6 +/- 1.9 and 39.9 +/- 3.9 micromol x kg fat-free mass (FFM)(-1) x min(-1) for 70 and 90% LT, respectively] and women (22.3 +/- 2.7 and 33.9 +/- 5.7 micromol x kg FFM(-1) x min(-1) for 70 and 90% LT, respectively). Similarly, there were no significant differences in glucose R(d) between men (21.2 +/- 1.9 and 38.1 +/- 3.7 micromol x kg FFM(-1) x min(-1) for 70 and 90% LT, respectively) and women (21.3 +/- 2.8 and 33.3 +/- 5.6 micromol x kg FFM(-1) x min(-1) for 70 and 90% LT, respectively). Although there were no differences between genders in the relative contribution of carbohydrate (CHO) to total energy expenditure, the relative contribution of muscle glycogen to total CHO oxidation (75.8 +/- 3.2 and 64.2 +/- 8.0% for men and women, respectively, at 70% LT and 75.1 +/- 2.6 and 60.1 +/- 11.2% for men and women, respectively, at 90% LT) was lower in women. Consequently, the relative contribution of blood glucose to total CHO oxidation was significantly higher in women. These results indicate that although plasma glucose R(a) and R(d) are similar in men and women, the relative contribution of muscle glycogen and blood glucose is significantly different in women during moderate-intensity exercise relative to LT.  相似文献

Dietary carbohydrate restriction (CR) presents a challenge to glucose homeostasis. Despite the popularity of CR diets, little is known regarding the metabolic effects of CR. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in whole body carbohydrate oxidation, glucose availability, endogenous glucose production, and peripheral glucose uptake after dietary CR, without the confounding influence of a negative energy balance. Postabsorptive rates of glucose appearance in plasma (R(a); i.e., endogenous glucose production) and disappearance from plasma (R(d); i.e., glucose uptake) were measured using isotope dilution methods after a conventional diet [60% carbohydrate (CHO), 30% fat, and 10% protein; kcals = 1.3 x resting energy expenditure (REE)] and after 2 days and 7 days of CR (5% CHO, 60% fat, and 35% protein; kcals = 1.3 x REE) in eight subjects (means +/- SE; 29 +/- 4 yr; BMI 24 +/- 1 kg/m(2)) during a 9-day hospital visit. Postabsorptive plasma glucose concentration was reduced (P = 0.01) after 2 days but returned to prediet levels the next day and remained at euglycemic levels throughout the diet (5.1 +/- 0.2, 4.3 +/- 0.3, and 4.8 +/- 0.4 mmol/l for prediet, 2 days and 7 days, respectively). Glucose R(a) and glucose R(d) were reduced to below prediet levels (9.8 +/- 0.6 micromol x kg(-1) x min(-1)) after 2 days of CR (7.9 +/- 0.3 micromol x kg(-1) x min(-1)) and remained suppressed after 7 days (8.3 +/- 0.4 micromol x kg(-1) x min(-1); both P < 0.001). The present study investigated potential sex-related differences in the metabolic response to carbohydrate (CHO) ingestion during exercise. Moderately endurance-trained men and women (n = 8 for each sex) performed 2 h of cycling at approximately 67% Vo(2 max) with water (WAT) or CHO ingestion (1.5 g of glucose/min). Substrate oxidation and kinetics were quantified during exercise using indirect calorimetry and stable isotope techniques ([(13)C]glucose ingestion, [6,6-(2)H(2)]glucose, and [(2)H(5)]glycerol infusion). In both sexes, CHO ingestion significantly increased the rates of appearance (R(a)) and disappearance (R(d)) of glucose during exercise compared with WAT ingestion [males: WAT, approximately 28-29 micromol x kg lean body mass (LBM)(-1) x min(-1); CHO, approximately 53 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); females: WAT, approximately 28-29 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); CHO, approximately 61 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); main effect of trial, P < 0.05]. The contribution of plasma glucose oxidation to the energy yield was significantly increased with CHO ingestion in both sexes (from approximately 10% to approximately 20% of energy expenditure; main effect of trial, P < 0.05). Liver-derived glucose oxidation was reduced, although the rate of muscle glycogen oxidation was unaffected with CHO ingestion (males: WAT, 108 +/- 12 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); CHO, 108 +/- 11 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); females: WAT, 89 +/- 10 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); CHO, 93 +/- 11 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1)). CHO ingestion reduced fat oxidation and lipolytic rate (R(a) glycerol) to a similar extent in both sexes. Finally, ingested CHO was oxidized at similar rates in men and women during exercise (peak rates of 0.70 +/- 0.08 and 0.65 +/- 0.06 g/min, respectively). This study was intended to compare exogenous [(13)C]glucose (Glu(exo)) oxidation in boys with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and healthy boys of similar age, weight, and maximal O(2) uptake. In a control trial with water intake (CT) and in a (13)C-enriched glucose trial (GT), subjects cycled for 60 min (58.8 +/- 0.9% maximal O(2) uptake) while the utilization of total glucose, total fat, and Glu(exo) was assessed. In CT, total glucose was 84.7 +/- 9.2 vs. 91.3 +/- 6.6 g/60 min (not significantly different) and total fat was 13.3 +/- 2.2 vs. 11.1 +/- 1.7 g/60 min (not significantly different) in IDDM vs. healthy boys, respectively. In GT, Glu(exo) was 10.4 +/- 1.7 vs. 14.8 +/- 1.1 g/60 min, corresponding to 9.0 +/- 1.0 vs. 12.4 +/- 0.5% of the total energy supply in IDDM and healthy boys, respectively (P < 0.05). Endogenous glucose was spared in both groups by 12.6 +/- 3.5% (P < 0.05). Blood glucose and plasma insulin concentrations were two- to threefold higher in IDDM vs. healthy boys in both trials. In conclusion, Glu(exo) is impaired in exercising boys with IDDM, even when plasma insulin levels are elevated.  相似文献

Both carbohydrate (CHO) and caffeine have been used as ergogenic aids during exercise. It has been suggested that caffeine increases intestinal glucose absorption, but there are also suggestions that it may decrease muscle glucose uptake. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of caffeine on exogenous CHO oxidation. In a randomized crossover design, eight male cyclists (age 27 +/- 2 yr, body mass 71.2 +/- 2.3 kg, maximal oxygen uptake 65.7 +/- 2.2 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) exercised at 64 +/- 3% of maximal oxygen uptake for 120 min on three occasions. During exercise subjects ingested either a 5.8% glucose solution (Glu; 48 g/h), glucose with caffeine (Glu+Caf, 48 g/h + 5 mg x kg(-1) x h(-1)), or plain water (Wat). The glucose solution contained trace amounts of [U-13C]glucose so that exogenous CHO oxidation could be calculated. CHO and fat oxidation were measured by indirect calorimetry, and 13C appearance in the expired gases was measured by continuous-flow IRMS. Average exogenous CHO oxidation over the 90- to 120-min period was 26% higher (P < 0.05) in Glu+Caf (0.72 +/- 0.04 g/min) compared with Glu (0.57 +/- 0.04 g/min). Total CHO oxidation rates were higher (P < 0.05) in the CHO ingestion trials compared with Wat, but they were highest when Glu+Caf was ingested (1.21 +/- 0.37, 1.84 +/- 0.14, and 2.47 +/- 0.23 g/min for Wat, Glu, and Glu+Caf, respectively; P < 0.05). There was also a trend (P = 0.082) toward an increased endogenous CHO oxidation with Glu+Caf (1.81 +/- 0.22 g/min vs. 1.27 +/- 0.13 g/min for Glu and 1.12 +/- 0.37 g/min for Wat). In conclusion, compared with glucose alone, 5 mg x kg(-1) x h(-1) of caffeine coingested with glucose increases exogenous CHO oxidation, possibly as a result of an enhanced intestinal absorption.  相似文献

We measured substrate utilization during exercise performed with water (W), exogenous glucose (G), and exogenous fructose plus glucose (FG) ingestion in boys age 10-14 yr. Subjects (n = 12) cycled for 90 min at 55% maximal O(2) uptake while ingesting either W (25 ml/kg), 6% G (1.5 g/kg), or 3% F plus 3% G (1.5 g/kg). Fat oxidation increased during exercise in all trials but was higher in the W (0.28 +/- 0.023 g/min) than in the G (0.24 +/- 0.023 g/min) and FG (0.25 +/- 0.029 g/min) trials (P = 0.04). Conversely, total carbohydrate (CHO) oxidation decreased in all trials and was lower in the W (0.63 +/- 0.05 g/min) than in the G (0.78 +/- 0.051 g/min) and FG (0.74 +/- 0.056 g/min) trials (P = 0.009). Exogenous CHO oxidation, as determined by expired (13)CO(2), reached a maximum of 0.36 +/- 0.032 and 0.31 +/- 0.030 g/min at 90 min in G and FG, respectively (P = 0.04). Plasma insulin levels decrease during exercise in all trials but were twofold higher in G than in W and FG (P < 0.001). Plasma glucose levels decreased transiently after the onset of exercise in all trials and then returned to preexercise values in the W and FG (approximately 4.5 mmol/l) trials but were elevated by approximately 1.0 mmol/l in the G trial (P < 0.001). Plasma lactate concentrations decreased after the onset of exercise in all trials but were lower by approximately 0.5 mmol/l in W than in G and FG (P = 0.02). Thus, in boys exercising at a moderate intensity, the oxidation rate of G plus F is slightly less than G alone, but both spare endogenous CHO and fat to a similar extent. In addition, compared with flavored W, the ingestion of G alone and of G plus F delays exhaustion at 90% peak power by approximately 25 and 40%, respectively, after 90 min of moderate-intensity exercise.  相似文献

The metabolic response to eccentric exercise in healthy older adults is unknown. Therefore, substrate metabolism was examined in the basal state and after sustained hyperglycemia (180 min, 10 mM) in eight healthy, sedentary older [66 +/- 2 yr; body mass index (BMI) of 25.5 +/- 1.2 kg/m] and nine younger (23 +/- 1 yr; BMI of 23.6 +/- 1.7 kg/m) men, under control conditions and 48 h after eccentric exercise. Indirect calorimetry was performed to evaluate carbohydrate and lipid oxidation (C(ox) and L(ox), respectively). Eccentric exercise caused muscle soreness and increased plasma creatine kinase in both groups of men (P < 0.02). Although a similar level of hyperglycemia was maintained in the two groups, glucose infusion rates were lower (P < 0.001) in the older men. Compared with basal levels, hyperglycemia stimulated an increase in C(ox) and a decrease in L(ox) during the control and exercise trials in the younger group (P < 0.03), but only during the control trial in the older subjects (P < 0.007). C(ox) was unchanged after eccentric exercise in the younger men [4.00 +/- 0.30 vs. 3.54 +/- 0.44 mg x kg fat-free mass (FFM)(-1) x min(-1); exercise vs. control] but was suppressed by 20% in the older group (3.37 +/- 0.37 vs. 4.21 +/- 0.23 mg x kg FFM(-1) x min(-1); P < 0.04). Moreover, L(ox) was reduced by 38% in the younger subjects (0.47 +/- 0.09 vs. 0.76 +/- 0.10 mg x kg FFM(-1) x min(-1); P< 0.03) but was augmented by 89% in the older group (0.68 +/- 0.11 vs. 0.36 +/- 0.08 mg x kg FFM(-1) x min(-1); P < 0.04). In addition, hyperglycemia-stimulated C(ox), L(ox), and respiratory exchange ratio responses to eccentric exercise were related to abdominal adiposity (r = -0.57, P < 0.04, r = 0.68, P < 0.02 and r = -0.60, P < 0.02, respectively). Despite normal glucose tolerance and the absence of obesity per se, older men experience a reduction in carbohydrate oxidation in response to hyperglycemia after eccentric exercise.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that the oxidation rate of ingested carbohydrate (CHO) is impaired during exercise in the heat compared with a cool environment. Nine trained cyclists (maximal oxygen consumption 65 +/- 1 ml x kg body wt(-1) x min(-1)) exercised on two different occasions for 90 min at 55% maximum power ouptput at an ambient temperature of either 16.4 +/- 0.2 degrees C (cool trial) or 35.4 +/- 0.1 degrees C (heat trial). Subjects received 8% glucose solutions that were enriched with [U-13C]glucose for measurements of exogenous glucose, plasma glucose, liver-derived glucose and muscle glycogen oxidation. Exogenous glucose oxidation during the final 30 min of exercise was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in the heat compared with the cool trial (0.76 +/- 0.06 vs. 0.84 +/- 0.05 g/min). Muscle glycogen oxidation during the final 30 min of exercise was increased by 25% in the heat (2.07 +/- 0.16 vs. 1.66 +/- 0.09 g/min; P < 0.05), and liver-derived glucose oxidation was not different. There was a trend toward a higher total CHO oxidation and a lower plasma glucose oxidation in the heat although this did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.087 and P = 0.082, respectively). These results demonstrate that the oxidation rate of ingested CHO is reduced and muscle glycogen utilization is increased during exercise in the heat compared with a cool environment.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether plasma glucose kinetics and substrate oxidation during exercise are dependent on the phase of the menstrual cycle. Once during the follicular (F) and luteal (L) phases, moderately trained subjects [peak O(2) uptake (V(O(2))) = 48.2 +/- 1.1 ml. min(-1). kg(-1); n = 6] cycled for 25 min at approximately 70% of the V(O(2)) at their respective lactate threshold (70%LT), followed immediately by 25 min at 90%LT. Rates of plasma glucose appearance (R(a)) and disappearance (R(d)) were determined with a primed constant infusion of [6,6-(2)H]glucose, and total carbohydrate (CHO) and fat oxidation were determined with indirect calorimetry. At rest and during exercise at 70%LT, there were no differences in glucose R(a) or R(d) between phases. CHO and fat oxidation were not different between phases at 70%LT. At 90%LT, glucose R(a) (28.8 +/- 4.8 vs. 33.7 +/- 4.5 micromol. min(-1). kg(-1); P < 0.05) and R(d) (28.4 +/- 4.8 vs. 34.0 +/- 4.1 micromol. min(-1). kg(-1); P < 0.05) were lower during the L phase. In addition, at 90%LT, CHO oxidation was lower during the L compared with the F phase (82.0 +/- 12.3 vs. 93.8 +/- 9.7 micromol. min(-1) .kg(-1); P < 0.05). Conversely, total fat oxidation was greater during the L phase at 90%LT (7.46 +/- 1.01 vs. 6.05 +/- 0.89 micromol. min(-1). kg(-1); P < 0.05). Plasma lactate concentration was also lower during the L phase at 90%LT concentrations (2.48 +/- 0.41 vs. 3.08 +/- 0.39 mmol/l; P < 0.05). The lower CHO utilization during the L phase was associated with an elevated resting estradiol (P < 0.05). These results indicate that plasma glucose kinetics and CHO oxidation during moderate-intensity exercise are lower during the L compared with the F phase in women. These differences may have been due to differences in circulating estradiol.  相似文献

Circulating adiponectin is reduced in disorders associated with insulin resistance. This study was conducted to determine whether an exercise/diet intervention would alter adiponectin multimer distribution and adiponectin receptor expression in skeletal muscle. Impaired glucose-tolerant older (>60 yr) obese (BMI 30-40 kg/m(2)) men (n = 7) and women (n = 14) were randomly assigned to 12 wk of supervised aerobic exercise combined with either a hypocaloric (ExHypo, approximately 500 kcal reduction, n = 11) or eucaloric diet (ExEu, n = 10). Insulin sensitivity was determined by the euglycemic (5.0 mM) hyperinsulinemic (40 mU x m(-2) x min(-1)) clamp. Adiponectin multimers [high (HMW), middle (MMW), and low molecular weight (LMW)] were measured by nondenaturing Western blot analysis. Relative quantification of adiponectin receptor expression through RT-PCR was determined from skeletal muscle biopsy samples. Greater weight loss occurred in ExHypo compared with ExEu subjects (8.0 +/- 0.6 vs. 3.2 +/- 0.6%, P < 0.0001). Insulin sensitivity improved postintervention in both groups (ExHypo: 2.5 +/- 0.3 vs. 4.4 +/- 0.5 mg x kg FFM(-1) x min(-1), and ExEu: 2.9 +/- 0.4 vs. 4.1 +/- 0.4 mg x kg FFM(-1) x min(-1), P < 0.0001). Comparison of multimer isoforms revealed a decreased percentage in MMW relative to HMW and LMW (P < 0.03). The adiponectin SA ratio (HMW/total) was increased following both interventions (P < 0.05) and correlated with the percent change in insulin sensitivity (P < 0.03). Postintervention adiponectin receptor mRNA expression was also significantly increased (AdipoR1 P < 0.03, AdipoR2 P < 0.02). These data suggest that part of the improvement in insulin sensitivity following exercise and diet may be due to changes in the adiponectin oligomeric distribution and enhanced membrane receptor expression.  相似文献

To examine the role of beta-adrenergic mechanisms in the regulation of endogenous glucose (Glu) production [rate of appearance (R(a))] and utilization [rate of disappearance (R(d))] and carbohydrate (CHO) metabolism, six horses completed consecutive 30-min bouts of exercise at approximately 30% (Lo) and approximately 60% (Hi) of estimated maximum O(2) uptake with (P) and without (C) prior administration of the beta-blocker propranolol (0.22 mg/kg iv). All horses completed exercise in C; exercise duration in P was 49.9 +/- 1.2 (SE) min. Plasma Glu was unchanged in C during Lo but increased progressively in Hi. In P, plasma Glu rose steadily during Lo and Hi and was higher (P < 0.05) than in C throughout exercise. Plasma insulin declined during exercise in P but not in C; beta-blockade attenuated (P < 0.05) the rise in plasma glucagon and free fatty acids and exaggerated the increases in epinephrine and norepinephrine. Glu R(a) was 8.1 +/- 0.8 and 8.4 +/- 1.0 micromol. kg(-1). min(-1) at rest and 30.5 +/- 3.6 and 42.8 +/- 4.1 micromol. kg(-1). min(-1) at the end of Lo in C and P, respectively. During Hi, Glu R(a) increased to 54.4 +/- 4.4 and 73.8 +/- 4.7 micromol. kg(-1). min(-1) in C and P, respectively. Similarly, Glu R(d) was approximately 40% higher in P than in C during Lo (27.3 +/- 2.0 and 39.5 +/- 3.3 micromol. kg(-1). min(-1) in C and P, respectively) and Hi (37.4 +/- 2.6 and 61.5 +/- 5.3 micromol. kg(-1). min(-1) in C and P, respectively). beta-Blockade augmented CHO oxidation (CHO(ox)) with a concomitant reduction in fat oxidation. Inasmuch as estimated muscle glycogen utilization was similar between trials, the increase in CHO(ox) in P was due to increased use of plasma Glu. We conclude that beta-blockade increases Glu R(a) and R(d) and CHO(ox) in horses during exercise. The increase in Glu R(d) under beta-blockade suggests that beta-adrenergic mechanisms restrain Glu R(d) during exercise.  相似文献

Whether age-related differences in blood lactate concentrations (BLC) reflect specific BLC kinetics was analyzed in 15 prepubescent boys (age 12.0 +/- 0.6 yr, height 1.54 +/- 0.06 m, body mass 40.0 +/- 5.2 kg), 12 adolescents (16.3 +/- 0.7 yr, 1.83 +/- 0.07 m, 68.2 +/- 7.5 kg), and 12 adults (27.2 +/- 4.5 yr, 1.83 +/- 0.06 m, 81.6 +/- 6.9 kg) by use of a biexponential four-parameter kinetics model under Wingate Anaerobic Test conditions. The model predicts the lactate generated in the extravasal compartment (A), invasion (k(1)), and evasion (k(2)) of lactate into and out of the blood compartment, the BLC maximum (BLC(max)), and corresponding time (TBLC(max)). BLC(max) and TBLC(max) were lower (P < 0.05) in boys (BLC(max) 10.2 +/- 1.3 mmol/l, TBLC(max) 4.1 +/- 0.4 min) than in adolescents (12.7 +/- 1.0 mmol/l, 5.5 +/- 0.7 min) and adults (13.7 +/- 1.4 mmol/l, 5.7 +/- 1.1 min). No differences were found in A related to the muscle mass (A(MM)) and k(1) between boys (A(MM): 22.8 +/- 2.7 mmol/l, k(1): 0.865 +/- 0.115 min(-1)), adolescents (22.7 +/- 1.3 mmol/l, 0.692 +/- 0.221 min(-1)), and adults (24.7 +/- 2.8 mmol/l, 0.687 +/- 0.287 min(-1)). The k(2) was higher (P < 0.01) in boys (2.87 10(-2) +/- 0.75 10(-2) min(-1)) than in adolescents (2.03 x 10(-2) +/- 0.89 x 10(-2) min(-1)) and adults (1.99 x 10(-2) +/- 0.93 x 10(-2) min(-1)). Age-related differences in the BLC kinetics are unlikely to reflect differences in muscular lactate or lactate invasion but partly faster elimination out of the blood compartment.  相似文献

We evaluated lipid metabolism during 90 min of moderate-intensity (50% VO(2) peak) cycle ergometer exercise in five men and five women who were matched on adiposity (24 +/- 2 and 25 +/- 1% body fat, respectively) and aerobic fitness (VO(2) peak: 49 +/- 2 and 47 +/- 1 ml x kg fat-free mass(-1) x min(-1), respectively). Substrate oxidation and lipid kinetics were measured by using indirect calorimetry and [(13)C]palmitate and [(2)H(5)]glycerol tracer infusion. The total increase in glycerol and free fatty acid (FFA) rate of appearance (R(a)) in plasma during exercise (area under the curve above baseline) was approximately 65% greater in women than in men (glycerol R(a): 317 +/- 40 and 195 +/- 33 micromol/kg, respectively; FFA R(a): 652 +/- 46 and 453 +/- 70 micromol/kg, respectively; both P < 0.05). Total fatty acid oxidation was similar in men and women, but the relative contribution of plasma FFA to total fatty acid oxidation was higher in women (76 +/- 5%) than in men (46 +/- 5%; P < 0.05). We conclude that lipolysis of adipose tissue triglycerides during moderate-intensity exercise is greater in women than in men, who are matched on adiposity and fitness. The increase in plasma fatty acid availability leads to a greater rate of plasma FFA tissue uptake and oxidation in women than in men. However, total fat oxidation is the same in both groups because of a reciprocal decrease in the oxidation rate of fatty acids derived from nonplasma sources, presumably intramuscular and possibly plasma triglycerides, in women.  相似文献

To evaluate the hypothesis that exposure to high altitude would reduce blood glucose and total carbohydrate utilization relative to sea level (SL), 16 young women were studied over four 12-day periods: at 50% of peak O(2) consumption in different menstrual cycle phases (SL-50), at 65% of peak O(2) consumption at SL (SL-65), and at 4,300 m (HA). After 10 days in each condition, blood glucose rate of disappearance (R(d)) and respiratory exchange ratio were measured at rest and during 45 min of exercise. Glucose R(d) during exercise at HA (4.71 +/- 0.30 mg. kg(-1). min(-1)) was not different from SL exercise at the same absolute intensity (SL-50 = 5.03 mg. kg(-1). min(-1)) but was lower at the same relative intensity (SL-65 = 6.22 mg. kg(-1). min(-1), P < 0.01). There were no differences, however, when glucose R(d) was corrected for energy expended (kcal/min) during exercise. Respiratory exchange ratios followed the same pattern, except carbohydrate oxidation remained lower (-23.2%, P < 0.01) at HA than at SL when corrected for energy expended. In women, unlike in men, carbohydrate utilization decreased at HA. Relative abundance of estrogen and progesterone in women may partially explain the sex differences in fuel utilization at HA, but subtle differences between menstrual cycle phases at SL had no physiologically relevant effects.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the kinetics of the oxygen uptake (VO(2)) response of boys to men during treadmill running using a three-phase exponential modeling procedure. Eight boys (11-12 yr) and eight men (21-36 yr) completed an incremental treadmill test to determine lactate threshold (LT) and maximum VO(2). Subsequently, the subjects exercised for 6 min at two different running speeds corresponding to 80% of VO(2) at LT (moderate exercise) and 50% of the difference between VO(2) at LT and maximum VO(2) (heavy exercise). For moderate exercise, the time constant for the primary response was not significantly different between boys [10.2 +/- 1.0 (SE) s] and men (14.7 +/- 2.8 s). The gain of the primary response was significantly greater in boys than men (239.1 +/- 7.5 vs. 167.7 +/- 5.4 ml. kg(-1). km(-1); P < 0.05). For heavy exercise, the VO(2) on-kinetics were significantly faster in boys than men (primary response time constant = 14.9 +/- 1.1 vs. 19.0 +/- 1.6 s; P < 0.05), and the primary gain was significantly greater in boys than men (209.8 +/- 4.3 vs. 167.2 +/- 4.6 ml. kg(-1). km(-1); P < 0.05). The amplitude of the VO(2) slow component was significantly smaller in boys than men (19 +/- 19 vs. 289 +/- 40 ml/min; P < 0.05). The VO(2) responses at the onset of moderate and heavy treadmill exercise are different between boys and men, with a tendency for boys to have faster on-kinetics and a greater initial increase in VO(2) for a given increase in running speed.  相似文献

Investigators have reported improved endurance performance and attenuated post-exercise muscle damage with carbohydrate-protein beverages (CHO+P) versus carbohydrate-only beverages (CHO). However, these benefits have been demonstrated only when CHO+P was administered in beverage-form, and exclusively in male subjects. Thus, the purposes of this study were to determine if an oral CHO+P gel improved endurance performance and post-exercise muscle damage compared to a CHO gel, and determine if responses were similar between genders. Thirteen cyclists (8 men, 5 women; VO(2)peak = 57.9 +/- 7.0 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) completed two timed cycle-trials to volitional exhaustion at 75% of VO(2)peak. At 15-minute intervals throughout these rides, subjects received CHO or CHO+P gels, which were matched for carbohydrate content (CHO = 0.15 g CHO x kg BW(-1); CHO+P = 0.15 g CHO + 0.038 g protein x kg BW(-1)). Trials were performed using a randomly counterbalanced, double-blind design. Subjects rode 13% longer (p < 0.05) when utilizing the CHO+P gel (116.6 +/- 28.5 minutes) versus the CHO gel (102.8 +/- 25.0 minutes). In addition, men (101.8 +/- 24.6; 114.8 +/- 26.2) and women (104.4 +/- 28.6; 119.6 +/- 34.9) responded similarly to the CHO and CHO+P trials, with no significant treatment-by-gender effect. Postexercise creatine kinease (CK) was not significantly different between treatments. However, CK increased significantly following exercise in the CHO trial (183 +/- 116; 267 +/- 214 U x L(-1)), but not the CHO+P trial (180 +/- 133; 222 +/- 141 U x L(-1)). Therefore, to prolong endurance performance and prevent increases in muscle damage, it is recommended that male and female cyclists consume CHO+P gels rather than CHO gels during and immediately following exercise.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine whether consumption of a diet containing 8.5 g carbohydrate (CHO) x kg(-1) x day(-1) (high CHO; HCHO) compared with 5.4 g CHO x kg(-1) x day(-1) (control; Con) during a period of intensified training (IT) would result in better maintenance of physical performance and mood state. In a randomized cross-over design, seven trained runners [maximal O(2) uptake (Vo(2 max)) 64.7 +/- 2.6 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)] performed two 11-day trials consuming either the Con or the HCHO diet. The last week of both trials consisted of IT. Performance was measured with a preloaded 8-km all-out run on the treadmill and 16-km all-out runs outdoors. Substrate utilization was measured using indirect calorimetry and continuous [U-(13)C]glucose infusion during 30 min of running at 58 and 77% Vo(2 max). Time to complete 8 km was negatively affected by the IT: time significantly increased by 61 +/- 23 and 155 +/- 38 s in the HCHO and Con trials, respectively. The 16-km times were significantly increased (by 8.2 +/- 2.1%) during the Con trial only. The Daily Analysis of Life Demands of Athletes questionnaire showed significant deterioration in mood states in both trials, whereas deterioration in global mood scores, as assessed with the Profile of Mood States, was more pronounced in the Con trial. Scores for fatigue were significantly higher in the Con compared with the HCHO trial. CHO oxidation decreased significantly from 1.7 +/- 0.2 to 1.2 +/- 0.2 g/min over the course of the Con trial, which was completely accounted for by a decrease in muscle glycogen oxidation. These findings indicate that an increase in dietary CHO content from 5.4 to 8.5 g CHO x kg(-1)x day(-1) (41 vs. 65% total energy intake, respectively) allowed better maintenance of physical performance and mood state over the course of training, thereby reducing the symptoms of overreaching.  相似文献

Five days of a high-fat diet while training, followed by 1 day of carbohydrate (CHO) restoration, increases rates of whole body fat oxidation and decreases CHO oxidation during aerobic cycling. The mechanisms responsible for these shifts in fuel oxidation are unknown but involve up- and downregulation of key regulatory enzymes in the pathways of skeletal muscle fat and CHO metabolism, respectively. This study measured muscle PDH and HSL activities before and after 20 min of cycling at 70% VO2peak and 1 min of sprinting at 150% peak power output (PPO). Estimations of muscle glycogenolysis were made during the initial minute of exercise at 70% VO2peak and during the 1-min sprint. Seven male cyclists undertook this exercise protocol on two occasions. For 5 days, subjects consumed in random order either a high-CHO (HCHO) diet (10.3 g x kg(-1) x day(-1) CHO, or approximately 70% of total energy intake) or an isoenergetic high-fat (FAT-adapt) diet (4.6 g x kg(-1) x day(-1) FAT, or 67% of total energy) while undertaking supervised aerobic endurance training. On day 6 for both treatments, subjects ingested an HCHO diet and rested before their experimental trials on day 7. This CHO restoration resulted in similar resting glycogen contents (FAT-adapt 873 +/- 121 vs. HCHO 868 +/- 120 micromol glucosyl units/g dry wt). However, the respiratory exchange ratio was lower during cycling at 70% VO2peak in the FAT-adapt trial, which resulted in an approximately 45% increase and an approximately 30% decrease in fat and CHO oxidation, respectively. PDH activity was lower at rest and throughout exercise at 70% VO2peak (1.69 +/- 0.25 vs. 2.39 +/- 0.19 mmol x kg wet wt(-1) x min(-1)) and the 1-min sprint in the FAT-adapt vs. the HCHO trial. Estimates of glycogenolysis during the 1st min of exercise at 70% VO2peak and the 1-min sprint were also lower after FAT-adapt (9.1 +/- 1.1 vs. 13.4 +/- 2.1 and 37.3 +/- 5.1 vs. 50.5 +/- 2.7 glucosyl units x kg dry wt(-1) x min(-1)). HSL activity was approximately 20% higher (P = 0.12) during exercise at 70% VO2peak after FAT-adapt. Results indicate that previously reported decreases in whole body CHO oxidation and increases in fat oxidation after the FAT-adapt protocol are a function of metabolic changes within skeletal muscle. The metabolic signals responsible for the shift in muscle substrate use during cycling at 70% VO2peak remain unclear, but lower accumulation of free ADP and AMP after the FAT-adapt trial may be responsible for the decreased glycogenolysis and PDH activation during sprinting.  相似文献
